Adani Ports announces Board rejig; Karan Adani named MD, Ashwani Gupta as CEO Mr. Gautam Adani being redesignated as its Execu ve Chairman AHMEDABAD: Adani Ports and SEZ, the ports and logistics arm of the Adani Group, has announced a reshuffle in its top brass, with the company’s Chairman and Managing Director Mr. Gautam Adani being redesignated as its “Executive Chairman”. Mr. Karan Adani, the company’s incumbent Chief Executive Ofcer, has been redesignated as the MD, whereas, Mr. Ashwani Gupta has been named as the new CEO. Cont’d. Pg. 6

Gujarat emerges as the Growth Engine of India with 33% Export share AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Industries Minister Shri Balvantsinh Rajput has said that Gujarat boasts a remarkable 33% share in exports and contributes 18% to the total production of the country by holding top position in logistics rankings.

Addressing a press conference, Shri Rajput said, “Over the past two decades, Gujarat has not only emerged as a growth engine of development in India but has also gained global recognition, becoming the most preferred destination for investors.” Cont’d. Pg. 21

Adani Ports announces Board rejig; Karan Adani named MD, Ashwani Gupta as CEO Mr. Gautam Adani being redesignated as its Execu ve Chairman Cont’d. from Pg. 3

The decision were announced in a regulatory filing following a meeting of the board of directors. Mr. Gautam Adani, who would now be the company’s executive chairman, will assume the charge “with effect from January 4, 2024 till the end of his current term i.e. up to June 30, 2027”, the company informed the exchanges. Mr. Karan Adani, presently the whole-time director and CEO of the company, will take over as the MD “with effect from January 4, 2024 till the end of his current term i.e. up to May 23, 2027”, the filing added. The appointment of Ashwani Gupta as the CEO will also come into effect from January 4,

Adani Ports said, adding that he has been given a three-year tenure. Adani Ports also said that its Board of Directors, in the meeting held recently gave their nod to the proposal to raise Rs 5,000 crore via the issuance of secured, rated, listed and redeemable non-convertible debentures (NCDs). The NCDs of “face value of Rs 1,000 each amounting up to Rs 5,000 crore” would be issued in “one or more tranches”, the company said in the exchange filing. For the purpose of the issue, the company’s board has delegated the powers to the company’s finance committee to “approve, implement and carry out activities in connection with the issue”, it added.

APM Terminals Pipavav hosts inter Village Sports Event, Fostering Youth Development and Community Unity PIPAVAV: APM Terminals Pipavav, one of India's most efficient ports, continues its commitment to community development by organizing the Swami Vivekanand Inter Village sports event. This annual initiative, held as part of the company's 'Gyan Jyot Project,' aims to foster fitness, encourage collaboration among schools, and enhance the overall health of the youth in the surrounding villages. The inauguration ceremony was graced by the esteemed presence of Captain P.K. Mishra, COO, APM Terminals Pipavav, who also served as the Chief Guest for the event. Over 650 students, with approximately 50% girls, from 13 schools across six villages, including Rampara, Bherai, Shiyalbet, Padar, Thavi, Divalo, Devpara, Kadiyali, and Pipavav Dham, enthusiastically participated in the annual sports event. The diverse range of sports featured in the event included Kabbadi, Kho-Kho, Long & High Jump, and 100- & 200-meter races.

encourages fitness but also inspires students to consider sports as a viable career path. ONE launches Indian Ocean Mediterranean Service (IOM) - Update of Service Rotation SINGAPORE: Ocean Network Express (ONE) is pleased to announce the new Indian Ocean Mediterranean service (IOM). The new IOM service will be expected to provide a reliable and quality assured transport service as well as schedule integrity. OOCL expands fleet with introduction of 24,000 TEU mega vessel SINGAPORE: Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) announced the addition of a new 24,000 TEU mega vessel to its fleet. The newest member of OOCL’s fleet was named OOCL Valencia at the shipyard of Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS). This box ship is the seventh environmentally friendly 24,188 TEU vessel in a series of twelve ordered by OOCL, as well as the first new OOCL vessel in 2024 to run OOCL’s Asia-Europe LL1 service. YING Xiuzhen, Director and Vice President of China-Base Ningbo Group, was honoured to name the vessel OOCL Valencia. “Last year, OOCL received a total of six new container vessels and thus rapidly optimized the fleet structure of both OOCL and the group. In the new year, in addition to the OOCL Valencia, more high-quality and high-performance ships will sail from here. OOCL and NACKS will continue to work for

win-win cooperation, grow together, and strive to create value for customers and society,” stated YU Tao, Director and Member of the Executive Committee of OOCL.

“Gujarat has also been a frontrunner in generating employment opportunities. A d d i t i o n a l l y, t h e s t a t e ’ s contribution to the national GDP stands at an impressive 8.4%” he added. Mr. SJ Haider, Additional Chief Secretary of the Industries Department, provided detailed information about the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024. He stated that this dynamic summit during the Azadi ka Amrit Kaal is being held in Gujarat under the guidance of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, it will pave the way for the roadmap of ‘Viksit Bharat@2047.’ Furthermore, he mentioned that this 10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit has achieved a historic milestone with over 107,000 registrations from

136 countries, including individuals and companies. He emphasized that the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, currently underway in the state, has significantly elevated Gujarat’s profile both within India and internationally. The Global Trade Show, a part of the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 9th January afternoon at the Helipad Ground, Gandhinagar. The inauguration ceremony for the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024 is set to take place at Mahatma Mandir on 10th January at 9:45 am, featuring the participation of dignitaries and representatives from India and abroad. In addition to various seminars, reverse buyers’ meetings, and business promotional programs, there will also be B2B,

B2G, and G2G meetings. He further stated that the State Government has initiated the ‘Vibrant Gujarat Vibrant District’ program for the first time during this 10th edition. In these programs held across 32 districts, a total of 46,000 crore worth of (MOUs) have been signed, paving the way for the creation of over 1.75 lakh jobs. He further mentioned that all efforts will be made to actualize all (MOUs) signed during this summit, and proactive initiatives will be undertaken for this purpose. He shared that steps will be taken during this summit to align with the theme of the G-20. Along with this, State and Country seminars have been organized this time to enhance the representation of states, with the Gujarat Government prioritizing the realization of P rime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s “Net Zero” concept.

India to maintain export gures of 2023 despite Global slowdown: Commerce Minister NEW DELHI: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has exuded confidence that during this fiscal, the country will maintain the last year's export figures despite slowdown in global trade. He said that India's exports of goods and services rose to USD 776 billion in 2022-23 from USD 500 billion two years ago. ‘Globally growth has been negative, international trade is in the negative territory, estimates are that this year international trade may fall, and in that perspective after having

grown so rapidly we are looking at a phase of consolidation... 'and I expect that the current year, we will maintain our figures of last year and strengthen our processes and our domestic capacities, capabilities to be able to grow at much faster rates in the years to come,' Goyal told reporters here. C u m u l a t i v e l y, t h e c o u n t r y ' s merchandise exports in AprilNovember 2023-24 contracted by 6.51 per cent to USD 278.8 billion. The estimated value of services export during the eight-month period stood at USD 220.66 billion.

He added that both the foreign affairs and commerce ministries are working together to boost exports. E a r l i e r, s p e a k i n g a t t h e Aatmanirbhar Bharat Utsav 2024 and ODOP Awards Ceremony 2023, he said that the the country is not 'anti-imports' and wherever required, companies can import goods. Govt to come up with 65 quality control orders to stop imports of sub-standard goods NEW DELHI: The Government will issue 65 quality control orders (QCOs) covering over 500 products to contain imports of sub-standard goods and boost domestic manufacturing, a senior Government official said recently. Joint Secretary in the Department for Promotion of I n d u s t r y a n d I n t e r n a l Tr a d e (DPIIT) Sanjiv said these orders are promoting safe products to consumers. Under these orders, items cannot be produced, sold, traded, imported

and stocked unless they bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark. "We are coming up with almost 65 QCOs, covering more than 500 products. QCO is benefitting consumers and reducing sub-standard imports," he told. These orders are already issued for goods like smart meters, nuts, bolts and fasteners. Violation of the law can attract a penalty of up to two years of imprisonment or a fine of at least Rs 2 lakh for the first offence, which

increases to Rs 5 lakh minimum for the second and subsequent offences. These orders are issued by the department in consonance with the WTO (World Trade Organization) Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) for industries falling under its domain. Mandatory QCOs help curb the import of sub-standard products, prevent unfair trade practices and ensure the safety and well-being of consumers as well as the environment.

India mulls subsidies for exporters facing higher shipping costs NEW DELHI: Given the recent spate of attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea, India is mulling a variety of measures, including subsidisations for Indian exporters to offset higher shipping costs and insurance premiums, a government official told. New Delhi is also in touch with the USled multi-nation coalition to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels in the Red Sea. “Indian exports are getting impacted, and there are concerns that agricultural commodities may see a fall in exports, because it goes to Europe through the Red Sea route. The government is mulling measures, either via the US-led coalition, or by subsidising Indian exporters so that the cost does not go up for them,” the official added. Commerce Ministry did not respond to a mail seeking comments on the above. Limiting the impact on agricultural exports is crucial for India as it directly affects farm income. India’s agricultural exports to Europe stood at $2.28 billion in April-November 2023, mostly comprising fruits, vegetables, coffee, and rice, according to data from Commerce Ministry’s NIRYAT Portal.

Following the Israel-Hamas war in October, the Red Sea, a route through which around 12 percent of global trade passes, has been in the news for periodic attacks on commercial vessels by the Houthi rebels of Yemen, sparking concerns over its impact on global maritime commerce. India’s exports to Europe through the Suez Canal (in the Red Sea) includes food products, apparel, and electronics, among others, and its imports include crude oil. In FY2023, India’s overall merchandise trade (exports and imports ) with Europe and North Africa were worth $106 billion and $98 billion, respectively. Approximately 50 percent of these imports and 60 percent of exports, totalling $113 billion, may have been through the Suez Canal, quoting Ajay Srivastava, Founder of the thinktank GTRI. Srivastava further said that India’s shipments, like low-end engineering products, steel, and commodities such as rice and garments, stand to be affected by the crisis unfolding in the Suez Canal. The Government official cited above added that India’s commerce ministry has been in touch with exporters, who have raised concerns about rising

shipping costs. Their concerns have been communicated to the Finance Ministry as well. Indian exporters are worried over a rise in shipping costs as attacks on commercial vessels taking the Red Sea route continue, forcing freight companies to opt for the longer route around Africa to reach the west or wait at nearby ports to ensure safe passage though the Suez Canal. The latest attack came on December 31, when Houthi militants attacked a Maersk container vessel with missiles and small boats, prompting the company to pause sailing through the Red Sea for 48 hours. The attacks, which targeted commercial ships sailing through the Suez, started with a drone attack on December 15 on the Liberia-flagged MSC Palatium III in the Bab al-Mandab strait, off Yemen, at the southern end of the Red Sea. Following repeated attacks, some global shipping companies last month said that they would be re-routing some of their services through the Cape of Good Hope. The trading route, which passes through the southern coastline of Africa, will delay shipments by 19-30 days.

India will have to eventually move to lower Customs duty regime: DPIIT Secretary NEW DELHI: India will have to eventually move to a lower customs duty regime and cannot continue to protect domestic manufacturers by citing infant industry argument, a senior Government official said recently. Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Rajesh Kumar Singh said that tariffs are not really considered a revenue source. Normally, customs duties or tariffs are used as a policy tool to ensure a higher level of protection for certain sectors to boost domestic manufacturing. “The DPIIT’s view is that there are possibilities of using tariffs in a creative manner to protect some of our industries, particularly when they are subject to predatory pricing or dumping from certain geographies,” he told reporters here.

While there is a need to protect sectors which are weak, there is no need to continue with the high tariff walls for segments that are doing well, he added. “But I think, over time, we will have to move to a lower tariff regime overall. The BCD (basic customs duty) will have to start coming down,” Singh said, adding “We can not continue with the infant industry argument forever”. These remarks assume significance as certain quarters of experts have stated that India should cut down its import duties to integrate with global value chains. However, some domestic industries like auto oppose that move. Talking about the domestic toy industry, the secretary said that with the help of measures like high customs duties and quality control orders, the sector is performing well. Domestic toy manufacturing is strengthening,

exports are increasing, and imports are coming down, he said. Singh said that for the toy sector, the government is using high customs duties to provide a higher level of protection for some time. Without naming China, he said that some countries are using predatory pricing to dump goods and destroy local manufacturing. Duties on toys have been raised to 70 per cent from 20 per c e n t e a r l i e r. W h e n a s k e d i f t h e government is looking to cut these duties, he said it will depend on the sector’s performance going forward. “We are facing a situation where one geography (country) in particular there is a sustained intent to destroy the manufacturing ecosystem in other countries through predatory pricing , thereafter enhancing their prices. So, we need to sort of calibrate our move accordingly,” he added.

Indian Railways achieve 1154.67 MT Freight Loading till December, 2023 NEW DELHI: On cumulative basis from April – December 2023, freight loading of 1154.67 MT was achieved against last year loading of 1109.38 MT, an improvement of 45.28 MT over last year’s loading for the same period. Railways have earned Rs. 125106.2 Crores against Rs. 120479.3 Crores over last year which is an improvement of Rs. 4626.92 Crores as compared to the same period last year.

During the month of December 2023, originating freight loading of 138.99 MT has been achieved against loading of 130.66 MT in December 2022, which is an improvement of 6.37% over last year. Freight revenue of Rs. 15097.61 Crore has been achieved in December 2023 against Rs. 14574.25 Crore freight earnings in December 2022, thereby showing an improvement of about 3.59%

India to become $4 trn economy before 2024 elections: Piyush Goyal NEW DELHI: India will become a $4 trillion economy before the upcoming general elections, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said recently. “And in 2-2.5 years, the country will become a $5 trillion economy. India will have the third largest GDP in the world latest by 2027 as per every street estimate,” Goyal said while speaking at the inauguration of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Utsav in New Delhi. General elections in India is likely to take place around April-May 2024. Goyal’s comments align with Bibek Debroy ’s, chair man, Economic Advisor y Council to the P rime Minister. Debroy, in an opinion piece for the Economic Times on December 31, said that “for the moment, $4 trillion in 2024 is a certainty.” Back in November, unverified reports suggesting that India had become a $4 trillion economy was shared by a few leaders and ministers. However, data suggests that given the budgeted target of 10.5 percent for nominal GDP growth in FY24,

India is aiming for a $3.7 trillion figure in the current fiscal. The Inter national Monetar y Fund’s World Economic Outlook database for October 2023, which contains GDP projections of various countries up to 2028, forecasts that India’s GDP will be $4.95 trillion in 2026. The $5 trillion figure is crucial since Narendra Modi after beginning his second term as the prime minister of India in 2019 had gave a clarion call for the country to achieve this target by 2024. India continues to retain its position as the fastest growing major economy in the world. Data released by the National Statistical Office on November 30 showed that India’s real GDP had grown at a robust 7.6 percent in the second quarter, sharply higher than market expectations of 6.8 percent and the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) forecast of 6.5 percent. GDP growth for the first half of 2023-24 stands at 7.7 percent, down from 9.5 percent in the first six months of 2022-23. Back in December, the RBI revised its forecast for India’s

GDP growth, projecting a growth rate of 7 percent for FY24. Speaking on India’s exports strategy, Goyal said, “Atmanirbhar Bharat does not mean India is antiimport. We will increase our exports and for that if we need to import certain products, we will do so.” At the same event, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that in the era of globalisation, many societies are beginning to lose their identities. And, given that there is a danger of cheap, subsidised goods invading Indian markets, efforts should be made to instill pride in producers as well as consumers to not only Make in India, but also Buy in India what is Made in India. According to latest available data, India’s merchandise exports were down 6.5 percent year-on-year in April-November, while imports contracted by 8.67 percent during the same period. The Commerce Ministry hopes that given the usual track record, exports should rise during the last quarter of the current fiscal.

The planned ‘Bharat Park’ will facilitate other countries of the world to buy Indian goods, he said during and event organised by the Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion

Council (SRTEPC). Expressing concern on Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with Japan, Australia, UAE, and South Korea, he said that utilisation of benefits are very poor in India. He also said that Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will spend Rs. 40 crore for setting up 21 testing laboratories across the country.

A SRTEPC statement said manmade fibre textiles sector is facing issues of inverted duty str ucture under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. "There is 18% GST on fibres, 12% on yarns and 5% on fabrics. This is leading to accumulated input tax credits with the manufacturers, which i@ adding to their cost," the statement said.

Vizag Port confident to touch 80 MT mark; Aims for record growth and sustainability in 2023-24 V I S A K H A P A T N A M : Visakhapatnam Port will emerge as number one port among major ports in the country, said Visakhapatnam Port A u t h o r i t y ( V PA ) C h a i r m a n Mr. M Angamuthu. Speaking to the media here on Wednesday, he said that the port, in its 90 years of history, is expecting to achieve 80 million tonnes of cargo handling in the current financial year against 74 million tonnes in the last financial year. He further informed that by the end of the third quarter of the current year, the port had crossed 60 million tonnes of cargo handling. Stating that the port is planning to make the city a global stage by developing the state-of-the-art Vizag International Cruise Terminal (VICT), the VPA chairman said that VPA has been striving to expand cruise tourism to more sectors, including VizagColombo for which it has already in consultations with various cruise liners. “Littoral Cruises Limited signed an MoU for the Chennai to Singapore via Visakhapatnam cruise. Further, Littoral has plans to run a cruise service connecting India, Sri Lanka, and Maldives with Rs 1,200 crore investment. The port is planning to encourage cruise operators to include VICT in their itineraries and also outsource the operation of cruise the terminal,” he said. Speaking about the developments in cargo handling, Mr. Angamuthu said that to provide hassle-free flow of traffic from port to NH-16, VPA and NHAI have taken

up the widening of existing four-lane roads to 10-lane roads from Convent junction to Sheelanagar for Rs 501.65 crore. The work has been awarded by NHAI and will be completed in 24 months, he explained. Stating that the VPA has been handling cargo to and from Vizag to more than 75 countries, he said that the port has been focusing on container cargo transport. “The container growth has been impressive in the current year compared to last year. Port has withdrawn priority berth hire charges, extending concession on vessel related charges up to 70 per cent and additional 10 per cent rebate on VRC for encouraging transhipment are some of the measures taken by the port.” Informing that the terminal operator JM Baxi and VPA are jointly conducting customer meetings to attract potential customers, t h e M r. A n g a m u t h u s a i d t h a t a new container liner service, IFX-2,

was launched in the current year. “The Visakha Container Terminal is evolving as a regional transhipment hub on the east coast of India with containers from Kolkata/Haldia, Paradip, Chittagong and Yangon getting transhipped at VPA,” he said. Stating that VPA has the distinction of becoming a green port due to various initiatives taken, he said that the port achieved self-sustainability in its energy requirement by installing and operating a 10 MW solar power plant. Another 15 MW solar power generation is in the pipeline, he added. VPA is the leading port in marine products export with a share of 26.36 per cent. “In FY 2022-23, the port shipped 2.64 lakh metric tonnes of marine products worth Rs 16,877 crore. To further enhance the marine products exports, the port is modernising the fishing harbour under PMMSY with an investment of Rs 150 core and the works are in progress,” Angamuthu said.

Danger of cheap goods invading Indian markets, says Minister S. Jaishankar NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has stressed the need for increased utilisation of locally manufactured products by Indian consumers, especially as cheap and highly subsidised imported items are ‘invading’ Indian markets. Expressing concern over the invasion of Indian markets by such imports, particularly from China, Jaishankar emphasised the need to “instill pride in the producer but also pride in the consumer”. India has been actively employing various policy measures, including quality control orders (QCOs), to curb the influx of low-quality imports. The latest data

revealed a 4 per cent increase in imports to a record $98.51 billion in financial year 2023, with China continuing to be India’s top import source. “To me, particularly because there is a danger of cheap goods or subsidised goods invading our markets, we have to instill pride in the producer but also pride in the consumer. We must consciously say that we should make in India and buy in India and buy what is made in India,” Jaishankar remarked at the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat Utsav celebration‘. Despite challenges in trade relations, particularly with China, the government’s focus on promoting

indigenous production and reducing reliance on imports has shown early successes. The ‘One District-One Product‘ initiative, aimed at selecting and promoting unique products from each district, is integral to preserving India’s cultural and economic identity. The report also highlighted the success of India’s efforts to boost local production in the electronic manufacturing sector. Imports of finished electronic products, including computers and laptops, showed a decline, attributed to the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.

India Charts Course for Self-Reliance in Maritime Insurance with National P&I Entity NEW DELHI: India sets sail to chart its own course in the maritime insurance sector, with plans underway to establish a national Protection and Indemnity (P&I) entity. The ambition is to provide shipowners in the country with access to open-ended high-risk insurance covers, a service often shied away from by traditional insurers. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), the driving force behind the initiative, is currently in the early stages of shaping the structure and functioning of this P&I entity. A New Wave of Maritime Insurance The MoPSW’s initiative is primarily focused on evolving the operational model for the national P&I entity, which will encompass the establishment of funding mechanisms and potential collaborations with insurance service providers. An official from the Ministry has shed light on the possibility of MoPSW providing a seed fund or corpus, serving as the initial impetus for

the realization of this P&I entity. However, the task is not without its set of challenges. The official highlighted how the relatively small number of Indian-flagged ships, when compared to the vast global fleets, could pose a significant hurdle. This discrepancy affects the viability of a P&I pool system, given the higher cost per participant due to the smaller number of contributors. Shifting Away from International Dependence At present, Indian shipowners are largely dependent on the International Group of P&I Clubs for such high-risk insurance coverage. This group constitutes thirteen clubs that collectively cover approximately 90% of the global ocean-going tonnage. P&I insurance, a mutual maritime insurance, offers coverage for various risks including cargo damage, war risks, and environmental hazards like oil spills. Members contribute to a

shared pool of funds, with payments fluctuating based on the club’s overall financial performance each year. The closest India has come to having a native P&I entity was back in 2018. The New India Assurance Co had offered P&I cover to local vessels plying on domestic routes. However, the current push for a national P&I entity aims to go beyond just domestic coverage. It seeks to shield Indian shipping interests against international sanctions, such as those witnessed during complications in insuring vessels for transporting crude from Russia. In essence, the creation of a national P&I entity in India is not just about expanding insurance options for shipowners. It’s about steering the nation’s maritime industry towards selfreliance, reducing dependence on international entities, and safeguarding national interests in the global shipping landscape.

Indonesia requests 900,000 tonnes of onions from India amid export ban NEW DELHI: Indonesia has requested 900,000 tonnes of onions from India amidst an export ban, emphasising the significance of Indonesia as India’s largest trade partner in ASEAN. This plea comes in response to India’s measures, including a 40 per cent export tax and a minimum export price of USD 800 per tonne, implemented to stabilize domestic onion supply and prices.

Despite these efforts, India imposed a complete export ban in December 2023, effective until the end of the financial year 2023-24, due to high prices caused by a crop shortfall. India, contributing about a fourth of the global onion output, is the largest exporter after the Netherlands and Mexico. In the current fiscal year (April-October), India exported 1.4 million tonnes of

onions, with 36,146 tonnes sent to Indonesia. However, the Indonesian embassy in New Delhi reported importing only 79,000 tonnes out of a total onion import of 194,107 tonnes in 2023. Exporters faced challenges with detained containers at the port gate. Production challenges, including erratic rains and dry spells, significantly impacted onion output in key states like Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Indian Economy outperforming peers, projected to grow at 6.2% in 2024: UN N E W Y O R K : T h e U N Wo r l d Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2024 report, launched here on Thursday, said that gross domestic product in South Asia is projected to increase by 5.2 per cent in 2024, driven by a robust expansion in India, which remains the fastest-growing large economy in the world. “Growth in India is projected to reach 6.2 per cent in 2024, slightly lower than the 6.3 per cent estimate for 2023, amid robust domestic demand and strong growth in the manufacturing and services sectors,” the report said. India’s GDP is projected to increase to 6.6 per cent in 2025. The report notes that economic growth in India is projected to remain “strong” at 6.2 per cent this year mainly supported by resilient private consumption and strong public investment. While manufacturing and services sectors will continue to support the economy, erratic rainfall patterns will

likely dampen agricultural output, it said. “Indian economy again outperformed its peers, not just this year but the last few years,” Chief of the Global Eonomic Division Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division (UN DESA) Hamid Rashid told reporters. He said that India’s economic growth has consistently remained over six per cent and “we believe this will continue in 2024 and 2025 as well.” Rashid noted that although inflation was relatively high for India, it didn’t have to raise rates as much and inflation has come down quite a bit. “That has allowed the Government to sustain the fiscal support that it needed,” he said adding that “we didn’t see significant fiscal adjustments or fiscal retrenchment in India. “Overall, domestic consumption is growing, household spending has grown, employment situation has

improved quite a bit. So we are very optimistic about India’s growth outlook in the near term,” he said. In response to a question on factors holding back India’s economic growth, Director of the Economic Analysis and Policy Division Shantanu Mukherjee cited India’s GDP growth rates of four years from 2022-2025 and said: “I’m not sure that 7.7%, 6.3%, 6.2% and 6.6% is exactly holding something back.” “In a kind of abstract sense, one would run the risk of overheating an economy if you grew at much faster rates at the size and complexity of India,” he said. Mukherjee noted that the Indian government has recently modified its tax collection systems and “those have also certainly helped and given a more stable playing field for businesses and other initiatives to progress.” Highlighting risks facing the economy, he said some of those risks are more global in nature.

Shanghai retains World’s Busiest Container Port crown in 2023 SHANGHAI: The Chinese Port of Shanghai maintained the title as the world’s busiest container port in 2023 with a 3.6% increase in volumes. Container volume at Shanghai Port exceeded 49m TEU last year, 1.7 million TEU higher than the throughput in the year before last, an increase of 3.6%. The port area of Yangshan posted a container volume of 25m TEU, an increase of 4.6% year-on-year, accounting for 51% of the total throughput of Shanghai port last year. Shanghai port currently offers over 320 liner services weekly to over 700 ports worldwide.
