Piyush Goyal lauds the efforts APM Terminals introduces APIs of Exporters as the Country to transform the next generation makes fast recovery in Exports of terminal data Holds meeting with Exporters to discuss and address their issues NEW DELHI: The Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal held meeting, through Video conference, with Office-bearers of Export Promotion Councils (EPCs), to discuss and address the issues of exporters, due to Covid-19. Addressing the EPCs, Shri Goyal said that the Exports, after setbacks in first two months of this financial year, due to Covid-19, are recovering fast, as the Unlock process gains and the Economic activity makes a revival. He said that the data of June, 2020 will reflect the gains, with the merchandise export figures touching almost 88% of the corresponding period last year. He lauded the role of exporters for attaining the feat in such a short time. The Minister said that their hardwork, self-confidence and determination really paid off. He said that the achievement is all the more laudable because many of the areas in the country are still under containment zones and having restrictions. Most of the markets abroad have not been able to make such a remarkable comeback, he added. On the issue of imports, the Minister said that they are still far behind and this is a good thing. Cont’d. Major Ports cargo volumes takes a hit of 20% in June Quarter : IPA NEW DELHI: Major ports in India, which handle more than half of the country’s seaborne trade, had a nearly 20% fall in traffic during the quarter ended June, the Indian Ports Association (IPA) said, as coronavirus lockdowns slowed economic activity. India’s twelve state-run major ports handled 141.9 million tonnes of shipments in the quarter ended June 30, compared with 176.7 million tonnes the previous year, the IPA data showed. The handling of major types of shipments such as crude oil, coal and containers fell, except for iron ore and fertilizers, the data showed. The data showed that iron ore traffic rose 18.83% in the quarter, which Atul Kulkarni, an analyst at CRU Group, said was a result of higher exports due to weak local demand for steel and clearance of stockpiles by miners in Goa. “Exports will be lower for the rest of the year, as local demand increases and global logistics and supply of iron ore improves,” Kulkarni said. Thermal coal imports fell nearly 35% due to reduced power demand, while coking coal demand fell 29% as local demand and production of steel fell. Major ports make up 20-25% of India’s annual imports of the fuel. Five of the 12 ports handled 63% of all shipments, IPA said, with Paradip on the east coast handling the highest traffic.

THE HAGUE: APM Terminals has introduced application programming interface (API) accessibility to build stronger, digital supply chains for logistics customers. APIs allow data to be transmitted in just seconds from the terminals’ operating systems directly to customers own transport management or logistics systems. “We have co-developed our APIs with customers looking for real-time data to give them better visibility at the container terminal level,” said David Francis, APM Terminals Head of Digital Customer Solutions. Once a customer queries a container or multiple containers, they’ll receive the latest status of the container instantly. “By creating better integration with our data through APIs we can improve decision-making for our customers and remove supply chain inefficiencies, which are costing the industry billions each year,” he explains. During the pandemic, cargo visibility issues have been exacerbated due to, among other things, transport and travel restrictions, reduced capacity and additional import/export controls. At the same time, demand patterns literally changed overnight as employees started to work remotely. “Never before, has speed and visibility been so key for improving the flow of Cont’d. PUBLIC NOTICE NO.77/2020 Sub.: Extension of validity of AEO certification for ease of renewal process– reg Attention of all the Importers, Exporters, Customs Brokers and all other stakeholders is invited to CBIC Circular No. 31/2020 – customs dated 30.06.2020. 2. Para 5.1 of CBIC Circular No. 33/2016-Customs dated 22.07.2016 amended vide Para viii of Circular 03/2018-Customs dated 17.01.2018, which relates to “Validity of AEO Certificate” and reads as — “The validity of AEO certificate shall be three years for AEO-T1 and AEO-T2, and five years for AEO-T3 and AEO-LO” 3. Vide CBIC Circular No. 27/2020-Customs dated 02.06.2020, Board has decided to extend the validity of all the AEO certificates expired/expiring between 01.03.2020 and 31.05.2020 to 30.06.2020 except for those entities against which a negative report is received during this period. 4. CBIC has received representations from the field formations regarding the difficulties being faced by the AEO entities in renewing their existing certifications owing to the lockdowns during Covid pandemic. References for extension have also been received from some AEO entities. 5. In light of the above, CBIC has decided to extend the validity of all the AEO certificates expired/expiring between 01.03.2020 and 30.09.2020 to 30.09.2020 except for those entities against which a negative report is received during this period. Accordingly, Circular No. 27/2020 dated 02.06.2020 stands modified as above. 6. JNPT remains operational amid lockdown; keeps Global Supply Chain active • Maintains 89% of export volume as compared to June 2019 • Improvement of 46% in the rail coefcient in the rst quarter NAVI MUMBAI: Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s Premier Container Port has been constantly striving to perform its duties of a strategic contributor to nation building even during the ongoing nationwide lockdown. JNPT handled 2,89,292 TEUs during the month of June-2020 which is 5.29% higher as compared to May 2020. Shri Sanjay Sethi, IA S, Chair man, JNPT said, “JNPT will continue to step-up and extend support for the country’s economic growth. With the support of all our stakeholders, we will continue performing our duties to steadfast growth trajectory of the Port sector, and have implemented various initiatives to make the business sustainable, efficient, economical and convenient for the Export-Import community. I hope together as a nation we will come out from this crisis and emerge stronger”. A total of 166 vessels were handled June 2020 and the total traffic handled was 4.07 million tonnes as against 5.63 million tonnes in June-2019, which is 27.64% less. Port maintained 89% of export volume as compared to June 2019 with the easing of lockdown restrictions and the

factories opening up. In rail operations the port handled a record 511 rakes, overtaking the previous highest monthly handling of 499 rakes in May 2020. Also the average rail coefficient of the first quarter of FY2020-21 increased to 23.40%, an improvement of 46%, as compared to 16.04% of same period last year. To facilitate faster evacuation, the port also handled 106 trains in the lockdown period to ICD Mulund as per extended gate facility which amounts to 6957 TEUs. Moving forward, Govt. is taking steady steps to ease the ongoing lockdown and in tune with the Government guidelines, JNPT has rolled out a Standard Operating Procedure for continuity of business operations post lockdown called the ‘Continuity of Business Plan, The JNPT Way’. This has been prepared by the team at JNPT to ensure that everyone at the port are following the guidelines laid down and are aware of the precautions JNPT is taking for its work force. The COVID 19 Task force will ensure that all employees at JNPT will follow the guidelines laid down.

APM Terminals introduces APIs to transform the next generation of terminal data Cont’d. from Pg. 3 Delivery experience as important as the product The exponential increase in ecommerce and the urgency of home deliveries brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the fact that for some customers, the delivery experience has become integral to the product itself. For companies wanting to gain a competitive edge, getting this right is essential. Currently, logistics companies spend a lot of time calling or emailing for cargo status updates. Over the last few months, this has been exacerbated by critical cargo for medical support and delays caused by reduced staffing. Apart from being inefficient in terms of human capital, this can also lead to error and delays. A step up from EDI Larger logistics companies may also rely on Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), which has been commonly used since the 1970s. However, as the internet’s capabilities have grown, the use of APIs are playing an increasingly important role, offering easier integration into digital ecosystems used by customers. The packaging and sending of data using EDI can, in some scenarios, result in data being outdated several hours, increasing the likelihood of supply chain partners using incorrect information to make decisions. This makes APM Terminals’ APIs the ideal solution for shipping lines, inland transporters, cargo owners and managers, and data aggregators who process higher volumes. Initially, APM Terminals is making APIs available to track import availability at container level, including container data, estimated time of arrival and date of discharge from the vessel,

the status of the container, any holds on the container, and whether a truck appointment has been made. The company is also offering an API to track vessel schedules in real-time, including estimated arrival and departure times, and cut-off times for delivering a variety of container types. APIs speed implementation, save time and create a digital edge APM Terminals’ APIs use familiar standard protocols, meaning that implementation by the customer is a fast, onetime process that saves time and IT resources. Any maintenance on the API is carried out by APM Terminals. The first locations to support the import availability and vessel schedule APIs are APM Ter minals P ier 400 Los Angeles, California - North America’s largest privatelyoperated container terminal and Pacific gateway to the United States along with APM Terminals Port Elizabeth – the company’s largest container terminal on the US East Coast serving as the Atlantic gateway to the US and Canada – and APM Terminals Mobile, Alabama – the company’s US Gulf gateway to the Southeast, Midwest and Central Canada. Fifteen more terminals in the company’s global portfolio will be added by the end of the year. Yang Ming fulfills Green Promise : Carbon Emission reduced 51% in 2019 TAIWAN: To achieve the pursuit of global sustainability and respond to customers’ growing awareness about environmental issues, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. (Yang Ming) formulated plans to build an echo-friendly fleet a decade ago with the aim to proactively enhance ship energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. In 2019, Yang Ming fleet’s average carbon intensity (CO2 emissions per transport work) per Teu/Km significantly reduced by 51% compared with the level in 2008, from 99.4 g/teu-km to 48.1 g/teu-km, accomplishing the IMO target of reducing carbon intensity by at least 40% by 2030, eleven years ahead of schedule. Through continuous fleet optimization, Yang Ming has fulfilled its promise of energy saving and emission reduction.

GHG emission plays a critical role in climate change mitigation. In this respect, IMO has adopted strict regulations to address the issue and set the goals to cut global shipping carbon intensity by at least 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050 when compared to 2008. To achieve the targets, Yang Ming has formulated several long-term strategies, including implementing 12 vessel modification and optimization projects, and accelerating the vessel renewal plan by eliminating vessels over 20 years of age and adding ten 2,800 TEU class, twenty 14,000 TEU and fourteen 11,000 TEU class echo-friendly smart vessels. In addition, Yang Ming has cooperated with weather service provider Weathernews Inc. (WNI) to build a monitoring system to manage fuel consumption and reduce GHG emission, and further evaluate the possibility of developing duel-fuel engine such as LNG or other engines that can perform with carbon-neutral alternative fuels.

Talking about the Aatamnirbhar Bharat, he said that it implies engagement with the world, a self-reliant and strong India, a confident and vibrant nation, an India where everyone has the courage of conviction, everyone gets ample and fair opportunities to grow and prosper, where even a poor man lives a respectable life. He called upon the industry to shun from over-dependence on imports and certain geographies, as this leads to long-term dire consequences. He exhorted them to

The Minister exhorted the exporters to be more competitive, be focused and play on their strengths. PPT intends to plant around 1 lakh trees in this fiscal in the locality and till date, 25,000 saplings are already planted in the locality. India-Bangladesh operate record number of freight trains in June NEW DELHI: India and Bangladesh Railways achieved a record by running more than 100 freight trains in June 2020 carrying essential items. Amid the disruption caused by Corona pandemic on movement of people and goods, in the month of June, Indian railways handed over 103 freight trains carrying essential commodities such as onions, ginger, chilies, maize, turmeric, sugar, finished products, and raw materials for industries to Bangladesh Railways. The High Commision of India in

Bangladesh said in a tweet on Thursday, 2nd July that the Railways of the two countries reached a milestone in June with the highest ever monthly interchange of freight trains carrying essential items. Encouraged by the success, the Bangladesh Railways has permitted the introduction of the Parcel Train Service between India and Bangladesh with the carrying capacity of 238 metric tonnes. This will be a great opportunity for traders to import a smaller quantity of goods. Earlier High Commissioner of India to

Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das in her video conference meetings had requested the Ministry of Railways, National Board of Revenues (NBR), Bangladesh, and Ministry of Commerce to look into Railways as a viable option during this period. This will help the bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh during the current crisis by minimising the disruption in the supply chain.

Govt to push domestic companies to make cranes for cargo handling; to replace imports worth Rs 1,000 cr NEW DELHI: The Shipping Ministry w ill pu sh d o m e s t i c c o m p a n i e s t o manufacture cranes used for cargo handling at ports to replace annual imports worth Rs 1,000 crore of such equipment as well as work towards increasing the country’'s share in global shipping recycling business to 60 per cent, according to Union Minister Mansukh L Mandaviya. The efforts are aimed at boosting ports-led industries and make India as a key destination for recycling warships and other ships under ''Aatma Nirbhar Bharat'', the Shipping Minister said. Under the ''Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan'' or ''Self-reliant India Mission'', global tenders up to Rs 200 crore were recently disallowed. "We will aggressively work towards ''Aatma Nirbhar Bharat'' by promoting port-led industries and industrialisation. We will boost ship repair and recycling facilities.

"And among many such initiatives, we have decided to procure ''Made in India'' cranes for cargo handling at ports. So far, India used to buy cranes worth about Rs 1,000 crore annually," Mandaviya said recently. He also said that so far there is no crane manufacturer here but Indian companies can very well build these under ''Make in India'' either independently or through the joint venture route. India has a 7,500-kilometre coastline and the cargo handled by the country's top 12 major ports had risen marginally to nearly 705 million tonnes (MT) over the 699.10 million tonnes (MT) cargo handled in 2018-19. Besides, procuring cranes locally, importance will be given to attaining selfreliance in port infrastructure development, jetty, terminal construction and cruise terminal, he added. This will also boost employment by creating demand for the skilled

manpower, he said, adding that plans are afoot to double the ship repair business in the next two years. "About 30,000 vessels come to Indian ports with cargo per annum. Their maintenance is compulsory in 3-5 years. We are working towards boosting ship repair facility set up. We are aggressively working towards this. At present India repairs only about 1,200 ships per annum," he said. The country will strive for about 60 per cent of the global ship recycling business share. Within two years, the share would reach 50 per cent, he added. India's share in global ship recycling business at present is 40 per cent. "European Union and Japan have started sending their ships for recycling to India. At present a total of 300 to 400 ships come to India for recycling. The trend has been encouraging but COVID-19 has impacted it but still we expect about 350 ships for recycling including from EU and Japan," the Minister said.

KoPT strengthens Shipping service to Bangladesh amid Petrapole stalemate KOLKATA: The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT), rechristened as the Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust, recently introduced a new shipping ser vice through the inland waterways route between the West Bengal capital and the seaside town of Chittagong in Bangladesh amid frequent disruption of cross-border trade via the PetrapoleBenapole land ports. Export of Indian goods to Bangladesh through the Petrapole border in West Bengal was disrupted on July 1 due to agitation by a section of exporters in the neighbouring country. They were unhappy over India not allowing import of goods from

Bangladesh through Petrapole due to the COVID-19 outbreak. “The ”M V Asiatic Moon” is expected to carry 300 containers of Indian exports to Bangladesh in its maiden voyage. This is the biggest vessel by size to ply between Kolkata and Chittagong till date. It can carry up to 600 containers in a single voyage to Chittagong,” Kolkata Po rt de puty chair man S Balaji Arunkumar said. Earlier, barges with carrying capacity of 80-100 containers were operational on this route, he said. The deadlock at the PetrapoleBenapole border continued on Friday, 3rd July, with Bangladeshi traders and

workers agitating for their demand. “The port and shipping line is also in consultation with the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) to make sure all exporters are aware of the new service to ease the pressure brought about by the issues faced at the overland routes through Petrapole,” KoPT Chairman Vinit Kumar said. Another similar cargo service to Chittagong will commence from the Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Port in the second week of July, he said. Meanwhile, the KoPT has commissioned an outer mooring terminal at the Haldia Dock Complex at a cost of Rs 3.8 crore, officials said.

CONCOR’s Nagpur ICD witness a significant jump in rice exports in last few months On a monthly average 3,200 containers of rice have been exported as against 2,000 containers compared to the previous year NAGPUR: Although most businesses are facing plethora of problems owing to lockdown induced by COVID-19, ICD, Nagpur managed by CONCOR has registered a jump in rice exports. “The company has registered 60 per cent rise in exports of rice compared to the year-ago period,” Mr. Santosh Kumar Singh, Chief Manager of ICD, Nagpur was quoted by a local daily of Nagpur. He said that there had been a substantial rise in exports of rice especially during the months of May and June. On a monthly average 3,200 containers of rice have been exported as against 2,000 containers compared to the previous year. Major supplies of rice comes from Gondia and Raipur to CONCOR’s Inland Container Depot, MIHAN. The rice is mostly exported to countries in the Middle East and Africa.

“On the other hand, the imports have fallen by 50 per cent this year as compared to the previous year. This year, on a monthly average 1,000 containers are being imported as compared to monthly average of 2,000 containers of the previous year at ICD, Nagpur,” he said. Lack of demand, prevailing economic situation and strain in relations between India and China have contributed to the fall in imports. Clothes, consumer durables and toys were mostly imported from China, but these imports have dipped,” he said. CONCOR’s ICD, Nagpur has shifted 80 per cent of its operations to its new sprawling location at MIHAN. The remaining 20 per cent operations will be shifted within two months, he said. The ICD, MIHAN is spread over an area of 110 acres compared to 35 acres at Ajni.

Shifting to MIHAN has not only given three times more space but advantage of being closer to the industries located at MIHAN-SEZ, Butibori MIDC and Hingna MIDC. With the new facility in MIHAN, CONCOR is offering 10 per cent lower container handling and freight rates. Currently the handling rates of 20 feet container is Rs 2,500 and for 40 feet container Rs 4,500. Similarly the freight rates for 20 feet container is Rs 28,000 whereas for 40 feet the rate is Rs 37,100. Other than container import and export services, the new facility at MIHAN offers domestic railway wagon handling services. Currently, the company is handling about three to four rakes per month. Mostly dals, foodgrains and rice is handled on domestic routes by rail, he further added.

India's trade deficit with China reduces to USD 48.66 bn in FY20 NEW DELHI: India's trade deficit with China fell to USD 48.66 billion in 2019-20 on account of decline in imports from the neighbouring country, according to government data. Exports to China in the last financial year stood at USD 16.6 billion, while imports aggregated at USD 65.26 billion, the data showed. The trade deficit between the countries was at USD 53.56 billion in 2018-19 and USD 63 billion in 2017-18. The main imports from China include clocks and watches, musical instruments, toys, sports goods, furniture, mattresses, plastics, electrical machinery, electronic equipment, chemicals, iron and steel items, fertilisers, mineral fuel and metals. New Delhi has time and again raised concerns over widening trade deficit with China. The government is taking steps such as framing technical regulations and quality norms for several products to cut

dependence on China for imports. It has also imposed anti-dumping duties on several goods which are being dumped in the domestic market at below the average prices from China with a view to guard domestic players from cheap imports. As many as 371 products have been identified for technical regulations. Out of these, technical regulations have been formulated for 150 products worth about USD USD 47 billion of imports. Over 50 quality control orders (QCOs) and other technical regulations have been notified in the past one year including on electronic goods, toys, air conditioners, bicycle parts, chemicals, safety glass, pressure cooker, items of steel, electrical items such as cables. China accounts for about 14 per cent of India's imports and is a major supplier for sectors like mobile phones, telecom, power, plastic toys, and critical pharma ingredients. Similarly, foreign direct investment

(FDI) from China into India too has dipped to USD 163.78 million in 2019-20 from USD 229 million in the previous fiscal, according to the data. India had received USD 350.22 million FDI from the neighbouring country in 2017-18 and USD 277.25 million in 2016-17. During April 2000 and March 2020, New Delhi attracted FDI worth USD 2.38 billion from China. In April, the government tightened FDI norms coming from the countries which share land border with India. As per the amended FDI policy, a company or an individual from a country that shares land border with India can invest in any sector only after getting government approval. Top sectors which saw maximum FDI from China during April 2000-March 2020, are automobile (USD 987.35 million), metallurgical (USD 199.28 million), electrical equipment (USD 185.33 million), ser vices (USD 170.18 million), and electronics (USD 151.56 million).

FedEx joins DHL, temporarily suspends Chinese import shipments to India MUMBAI: Amid simmering tensions between India and China, prominent freight transporter FedEx Corp has said it will temporarily suspend the shipping of goods from China. FedEx Corp said the decision was taken as it was facing backlogs beyond its control, leading to congestion at facilities. “We will continue to monitor the situation and will resume our normal operations as the circumstances allow,” a FedEx spokeswoman said. FedEx’s decision to temporarily suspend Chinese import shipments to India came after German logistics company DHL recently took a similar step.

DHL temporarily suspended picking up import shipments from China to India, af ter border tensions between the countries led to clearance delays. Customs officials at the key port of Chennai, which handles various cargo including automobiles, fertilisers and petroleum products, have held shipments originating from China for extra checks. A DHL representative confirmed that the recent delay in customs clearance of cargo into India caused the shipment company’s DHL Express India unit to temporarily suspend pick ups from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. DHL did not elaborate on the nature of consignments that were delayed.

It was reported last week that goods, including products from US companies Apple, Cisco and Dell were caught up in the border tensions, as Indian ports held up imports from China. Pharmaceutical consignments are also stuck at Chennai and other ports and at an airport, and drug companies have been told their shipments will be released after rigorous scrutiny of each container, down to every drum, a Senior Industry Executive said last month. There have been growing calls for a boycott of Chinese products, after a border clash between India and China last month.

World’s fifth-largest reserves buffer gives India comfort MUMBAI: India has accumulated the world’s fifth-largest foreign exchange reserves at more than $500 billion, making it a bright spot in an otherwise dismal economy. A strong reserve buffer is a cushion against market volatility, and gives foreign investors and credit rating companies added comfort that the government can meet its debt obligations despite a deteriorating fiscal outlook and the economy’s first likely contraction in more than four decades.

The level of reserves is enough to cover 13 months of imports and is equivalent to nearly a fifth of the country’s gross domestic product. It’s also the fifthlargest in the world after China, Japan, Switzerland and Russia, according to the International Monetary Fund. India’s trade gap narrowed to a 13-year low in May, as imports declined faster than exports. While the contraction reduces the need for dollars to fund purchases for now, it does highlight a wor r ying trend -- that

demand in the economy has been hit hard amid one of the world’s strictest pandemic lockdowns. As a growing and emerging market economy, India needs to import capital goods and machinery to keep its industrial sector humming. Cheaper oil also helped lower the import bill. India’s current account, the broadest measure of trade in goods and services, is likely to remain in surplus in the AprilJune period, but a recovery in imports might tilt the balance for the full year.

Floating jetty construction completed in Tripura for waterway trade with Bangladesh AGARTALA: The Tripura government announced the completion of a floating jetty on river Gomati in Sonamura, ahead of the opening of the first international waterway in the State. The Sonamura–Daudkandi route on the river Gomati was a part of the India-Bangladesh Protocol signed in Dhaka on May 20, 2019. The Inland Waterways Authority of

India (IWAI) built the jetty in Sonamura, 49 km south of Agartala, in just three weeks. It can handle medium-size cargo vessels. Thanking the IWAI, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said, “Glad that Sonamura is now a custom port which will bring economic development to the northeast.” The Chief Minister earlier hailed the agreement on extension of the waterway

protocol between Indian and Bangladesh to open the 93-km route between Sonamura and Daudkhandi (Bangladesh). As per protocol, vessels of both countries can move on the route and anchor at each other’s port. Export and import trade through the waterway would be comparatively cheaper than surface transport, business leaders have said.

Foreign Reserves rise by $1.27 Billion to $506.83 Billion MUMBAI: India's foreign exchange reserves increased by $1.272 billion during the week ended 26 June to $506.838 billion from $505.566 billion reported for the week ended 19 June, the RBI's weekly statistical supplement said. On a weekly basis, FCAs, the largest

component of the forex reserves, edged up by $565 million to $467.603 billion. Expressed in dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound, and yen held in the foreign exchange reserves.

Similarly, the value of the country's gold reserves increased by $7.07 million to $33.523 billion. However, the SDR value slipped by $3 million to $1.444 billion. Nevertheless, the country's reserve position with the IMF inched up by $3 million to $4.267 billion.

Coalition for the Energy of Future: CMA CGM & other companies have formed an International Coalition Nine concrete projects for developing energy solutions to accelerate the energy transition in transport and logistics. MARSEILLE: At the Rencontres Économiques d’Aix-enProvence, an economic forum attended by many organizations from around the world, 11 international groups have announced they have joined forces to form an international coalition open to new members. AWS, Carrefour Group, CMA CGM Group, Cluster Maritime Français, Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, Engie, Faurecia, Michelin, Schneider Electric, Total and Wärtsilä are the existing members. Common goals for the energy transition in transport and logistics The Coalition aims to accelerate the development of energy sources and technologies to address the challenges posed by sustainable mobility in the transport and logistics industry by reducing emissions, fighting global warming and protecting biodiversity. The 11 existing members are pooling their expertise in pursuit of three key goals to achieve genuine technological breakthroughs with tangible results by 2030: • Unlock a more extensive portfolio of clean energy sources, Lower energy consumption per kilometer-equivalent of goods transported, • Eliminate a substantial proportion of emissions linked to transport and logistics. • Nine concrete projects devised by the nine working groups already set up Over the past few months, the Coalition has established nine working groups with several dozen participants to devise nine concrete projects that will help shape the energy sources of the future: • Develop green hydrogen procurement solutions for the transport sector, • Develop biofuels for the various modes of transport, • Expand the use of biogas and synthetic gases in transport, • Replace fossil fuels with green energy across the supply chain, • Launch zero-emission vehicle pilot projects by the end of 2021, • Create a digital door-to-door route planning system that calculates the option with the lowest environmental impact, • Optimize the operational management and loading to step up the energy efficiency of each ton carried, • Make multimodal platforms more environmentally friendly for logistics applications, • Consolidate methods used to measure the impact of energy transition projects in transport and logistics. The Coalition was launched in late 2019 during the French Maritime Economy Conference (Assises de l’Economie de la Mer) and has received the backing of French President Emmanuel Macron. The Coalition’s initial findings will be officially presented in January 2021 at the IUCN World Conservation Congress.
