Leased cargo express train ď€‚agged off from Tirupur TIRUPUR: The third leased parcel cargo express train of the Salem division was flagged off from Vanjipalayam in Tirupur recently. The trains have been leased for a period of six years, during which they will earn the division Rs 66 crore. The train, leased to Viskan Logistics Services Private Limited, has 15 wagons that can carry 353 tonnes of commodities. It will leave Vanjipalayam

at 8.30pm every Saturday and reach New Guwahati station in Assam at 8pm on Tuesday. It will stop at Erode, Vijayawada Junction, Khurdha road, S a n k r a i l G o o d s Te r m i n a l Ya r d (Howrah) and at New Jalpaiguri Jn for loading and unloading goods. The train will leave Guwahati at 8.30pm on every Thursday and reach Vanjipalayam at 12.30am on Monday. The other leased parcel cargo

express trains began operation between Coimbatore North and Patel N a g a r l a s t Au g u s t a n d b e t w e e n Coimbatore North and Rajkot on January 8. The trains have been leased for a period of six years, during which they will earn the division Rs 66 crore. Divisional Railway Manager Gautam Srinivas flagged off the cargo train along with senior Divisional Commercial Manager E Harikrishnan.

PPP Mode for Operational Services at Major Ports : Union Budget •Rs 1,624 Crore subsidy support to Indian Shipping companies to promote ﬂagging of Merchant Ships in India •Recycling capacity of around 4.5 million Ldt to be doubled by 2024 to generate an addi onal 1.5 lakh jobs Cont’d. from Pg. 3

This was stated by the Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting Union Budget 2021-22 in Parliament. Major Ports will be moving from managing their operational services on their own to a model where a private partner will manage it for them, she said. To promote flagging of Merchant Ships in India, in her budget speech, Smt. Sitharaman also proposed to launch a subsidy support scheme of Rs 1624 crore in global tenders floated by Ministries and CPSEs over 5 years to Indian shipping companies. She emphasised, that this initiative would enable greater training and employment opportunities for Indian seafarers besides enhancing Indian companies share in global shipping. Smt. Sitharaman also proposed to double the ship recycling capacity of around 4.5 Million Light Displacement Tonne (LDT) by 2024. She said that efforts will be made to bring more ships to India from Europe and Japan, as around 90 ship recycling yards at Alang in Gujarat have already achieved HKC (Hong Kong International convention) compliant certificates. This is expected to generate additional 1.5 lakh jobs for the youth of the country.

Indian, Iranian officials review development of Chabahar Port TEHRAN / NEW DELHI: Indian and Iranian officials recently reviewed the development and operations of a terminal at Chabahar port operated by India ahead of the delivery of heavier equipment to bolster cargo-handling. An Indian delegation, led by Joint Secretary (Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran) JP Singh of the external affairs ministry, is visiting Iran for political co nsultatio ns a nd t o a sse ss the development of Shahid Beheshti terminal at the port on the Gulf of Oman. During a meeting at Chabahar, Singh described the port as a vital hub linking India to landlocked countries and said it is key to the development of trade, economic and political relations between Tehran and New Delhi, according to Iran’s state-run media. Singh also formally handed over two 140-tonne mobile harbour cranes that were delivered by India to Chabahar earlier this month as the first shipment of heavy equipment for developing

Shahid Beheshti terminal. “We are happy to supply the port of Chabahar with two cranes…This can solve some of the problems in loading and unloading cargo,” he said. The cranes, worth $8.5 million, were procured from an Italian firm. The first shipment also included two telescopic spreaders with adjustable arms to handle shipping containers of up to 40 tonnes. Behrouz Aghaei, Director-General o f I r a n’ s p o r t s a n d M a r i t i m e department in Sistan-Baluchestan province, told the media the next consignment of heavy equipment, including two mobile coastal cranes, is expected to be shipped from Italy to Iran in the near future. Singh said Chabahar port had handled 75,000 tonnes of wheat donated by India to Afghanistan last year, and adequate measures had been taken to upgrade the port. He added that India has always sought exemptions and waivers from sanctions for Chabahar

port so that it could be used to access markets in other countries. During the meeting, the two officials of the two sides discussed ways to further develop the infrastructure and capabilities of the port. Recently, the Indian team held political consultations in Tehran with an Iranian delegation led by Rasoul Mousavi, Assistant to Iran’s Foreign Minister and Director-General for West Asia in the Foreign Ministry. Recent international and regional developments and bilateral ties were part of the discussions. Singh also met Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and their discussions focused on regional and global developments and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), according to state-run Irna news agency. Singh invited Araghchi to India for a political dialogue before a meeting of the bilateral joint economic commission.

CII, EEPC express concerns over challenges faced by Engineering exporters NEW DELHI: Leading industry bodies CII and Engineering Exports P romotion Council (EEPC) have expressed concerns about the problems faced by engineering exporters in the last two three months. Chairman of CII committee on Exports and Imports Sanjay Budhia said the engineering exporters are facing tough times due to factors like high steel prices and increased ocean freight. “Engineering exporters are going through one of the most turbulent and trying times. Out of India’s total merchandise export of $320 billion, the sector contributes more than 25 per cent and is one of the biggest employment generator in the country ”, he said. Budhia said

unfortunately, in spite of being such an important sector, the engineering exporters are now on the verge of losing a sizeable portion of their business to other countries which will lead to large scale layoffs and permanent closure of factories. Budhia listed that the main factors causing worry are a steep increase in steel prices. He said there has been a continuous increase in steel prices from July 2020. He said engineering exporters should get steel at least 20 per cent lower than the current price so that this hard sector can be saved. According to him, the other main dampener is the abnormal rise in ocean freights by 70 per cent to 80 per cent. “Shipping lines are operating almost

like a cartel and asking freight rates which are never heard of and just not affordable. If rates are not brought under control then Indian exports will come to a grinding halt”, he said. He said the other main problem is the increase in prices of other inputs like corrugated boxes needed for packaging purposes. Chairman of EEPC Mahesh Desai said the MSME engineering exports are facing problems as credit is not available at the right interest rates. The other two main factors are rise in steel prices and ocean freights to North America and Europe, he added. Desai said EEPC has requested to make credit available at Libor plus two to 2.5 per cent.

India’s Merchandise Exports in January 2021 increase by 5.37% at USD 27.24 billion NEW DELHI: India’s merchandise exports in January 2021 were USD 27.24 billion as compared to USD 25.85 billion in January 2020, an increase of 5.37%. Exports during April-January 2020-21 were USD 228.04 billion, as compared to USD 264.13 billion during the same period last year, exhibiting a negative growth of 13.66%. India’s merchandise imports in January 2021were USD 41.99 billion, as compared to USD 41.15 billion in January 2020, an increase of 2.05%. Merchandise imports during April-January 2020-21 were USD 300.26 billion, as compared to USD 405.33 billion during the same period last year, exhibiting a negative growth of 25.92%. India is thus a net importer in January 2021, with a trade deficit of USD 14.75 billion, as compared to trade deficit of USD 15.30 billion in January 2020, declined by 3.57%. In January 2021, the value of nonpetroleum exports was USD 25.24 billion, registering a positive growth of 11.37% over January 2020. The value of nonpetroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports in January 2021 was USD 22.40 billion as compared to USD 19.79 billion in January 2020, registering a positivegrowth of 13.21%. The cumulative value of non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports in April-January 2020-21 was USD 188.73 billion, as compared to USD 197.94 billion for the corresponding period in 2019-20, exhibiting a decrease of 4.65%. In January 2021, Oil imports were USD 9.40 billion, as compared to USD 13.01 billion in January 2020, a decline by 27.72%. Oil imports in April-January 202021 were USD 63.09 billion, as compared to USD 109.72 billion in April- January

2019-20, showing a decline of 42.48%. Non-oil imports in January 2021 were estimated at USD 32.59 billion, as compared to USD 28.14 billion in January 2020, showing an increase of 15.81%. Nonoil imports in April-January 2020-21 were USD 237.17 billion, as compared to USD 295.61 billion in April-January 2019-20, registering a decline of 19.77%. Non-oil, non-GJ (gold, silver &Precious metals) imports were USD 26.35 billion in January 2021, recording a positive growth of 5.94%, as compared to non-oil and non-GJ imports of USD 24.87 billion in January 2020. Non-oil and nonGJ imports were USD 201.69 billion in April- January 2020-21, recording a negative growth of 19.27%, as compared to non-oil and non-GJ imports of USD 249.83 billion in April-January 2019-20. Major commodities of export which have recorded positive growth during January 2021 vis-à-vis January 2020 are: Other cereals (313.88%), Oil meals (253.06%), Iron ore (108.66%), Cereal preparations and miscellaneous processed item (43.62%), Jute mfg. Including floor covering (27.64%),Tobacco (26.18%), Rice (25.86%), Fruits and vegetables (24.00%), Carpet (23.69%), Handicrafts excl. Hand-made carpet (21.92%),Spices (20.35%), Ceramic products and glassware (19.01%),Engineering goods (18.69%),Drugs and pharmaceuticals (16.42%), Electronic Goods (16.00%), Tea (13.35%), Cashew (11.82%), Plastic and linoleum (10.42%), Mica, coal and other ores, minerals including process (9.59%),Cotton yarn/fabrics/made-ups, handloom products etc. (6.94%),Coffee (4.84%), and Organic and Inorganic Chemicals (2.54%). Major commodities of export which

have recorded negative growth during January 2021 vis-à-vis January 2020 are Petroleum products (37.34%), Leather and leather manufactures (18.60%), RMG of All Textiles (10.73%), Man-made yarn/fabrics/made-ups etc. (9.62%),Meat, dairy and poultry products (8.03%), Oil Seeds (6.48%),Marine products (1.72%), and Gems and Jewellery (1.26%). Major commodity groups of import showing positive growth in January 2021 over the corresponding month of last year are: Gold (154.70%), Pulses (96.56%), Sulphur & Unroasted Iron Pyrites (76.81%), Pearls, precious & Semiprecious stones (50.20%), Cotton Raw & Waste (49.76%), Vegetable Oil (35.32%), Iron & Steel (25.95%), Artificial resins, plastic materials, etc. (20.90%), Chemical material & products (18.76%), Nonferrous metals (17.73%), Electronic goods (16.98%),Organic & Inorganic Chemicals (15.61%),Coal, Coke & Briquettes, etc. (9.67%),Dyeing/ tanning/ colouring materials (4.50%), Wood & Wood products (2.81%), Medcnl. & Phar maceutical products (1.23%), Machine tools (0.60%), and Textile yarn Fabric, made-up articles (0.52%). Major commodity groups of import showing negative growth in January 2021 over the corresponding month of last year are: Silver (95.77%), Newsprint (80.81%), P roject Goods (62.16%), Leather & leather products (37.73%), Petroleum, Crude & products (27.72%), Transport equipment (25.26%), Pulp and Waste paper (12.74%), Fertilisers, Crude & manufactured (11.57%), Professional instrument, Optical goods, etc. (10.33%), Metaliferrous ores & other minerals (4.57%), Machinery, electrical & nonelectrical (1.38%), and Fruits & vegetables (0.08%).

Budget Reaction : Anil Kumar Jain, President, GCCI GANDHIDHAM: The union budget announced by Hon Finance Minister was promised to be a milestone budget. But except for few sparks, there is not much to be make it a Milestone budget, said Mr. Anil Kumar Jain, President, GCCI. Fr o m t h e b u s i n e s s c o m m u n i t y following observations are made: 1. The Indian Flag carrying shipping companies have been provided with Rsl624 cr. Subsidy is a welcome step and will help Indian Seafarers. 2. Major ports will offer projects worth 2000 cr on PP basis. This will boost pvt. sector participation. 3. The recycling of old ships capacity will double by 2024 offering 1.5Lakhs jobs is a welcome decision. 4. Income tax old cases reopen limit is reduced from 6 years to 3 years is a welcome step. 5. There is a inclination to privatize

Ports, Airlines, Insurance companies, Banks, non-core PSU which is a good sign. The Govt, should care businesses and let pvt sector run it. 6. Exemption of filing of IT return for 75 years and above is hardly much relief. It should have been 100% IT payment exemption. 7. Raising Tax Audit from 5 crores to 10 crores is good. But all conditions attached must be dropped. 8. Easing compliance requirements of small companies is a limited yet welcome step. 9. GST Tax laws must have been made simpler, which is a dire need for better compliance. 10.Additional Interest deduction (Sec. 80 EE A) is surely a relief to middle class housing loan borrowers. 11. Start up: One year extension for IT exemption is good but has limited impact. 12. The idea to set up Faceless Disputes

Resolution mechanism is welcome. 13. There is nothing done for MSME units, which are under pandemic hit stress. 14. Similarly the IT rates for Covid hit middle class and small traders have not been provided any relief. 15. The idea of creating a Bad bank is welcome if it creates willingness and a culture of healthy landing in PSU Banks. 16. The highway Road grid in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, WB and Assam is welcome as it strengthens national Road network. The fiscal deficit in current year is 9.5% and hence one can appreciate that FM has not announced any major tax relief. Her budget is leaning towards growth by raising funds from assets sell off or inviting private investment. So given the current scenario of Pandemic hit economy, the FM has done what best she could have done - keep the economy rolling.

Three New Ports in Andhra Pradesh to boost State Maritime trade HYDERABAD: The AP State government’s plan to construct landlord ports at Bhavanapadu (Srikakulam district), Ramayapatnam (Prakasam) and Machilipatnam (Krishna) is intended to give further boost to the maritime trade being largely done now by the State’s only major port at Visakhapatnam and the thriving private ports at Krishnapatnam (Nellore), Gangavaram (Visakhapatnam) and Kakinada (East Godavari). According to official sources, the Krishnapatnam, Ganagavaram and Kakinada ports together are handling over 100 million tonnes (mtT) of cargo every year on an average. The Krishnapatnam Port alone is

handling 55 MT and it is followed by the Gangavaram port which accounts for about 35 MT. The Kakinada deepwater port is handling approximately 15 MT a year, up from a maximum of 4 MT two decades ago. The government recently got three additional berths constructed at the Kakinada port at a cost of Rs. 300 crore taking their total number to nine. The public sector port at Visakhapatnam is handling about 65 MT e v e r y y e a r. Te n d e r s a r e u n d e r preparation for the Bhavanapadu and Machilipatnam ports. With a draft of 19 metres, the proposed Bhavanapadu port has been planned to accommodate vessels of 1.20

lakh to 1.80 lakh Dead Weight Tons (DWT) whereas the Ramayapatnam port (with 15.50 metres draft) was designed to receive vessels weighing up to 85,000 DWT. The first phase of the Bhavanapadu port is estimated to cost Rs. 3,700 crore while the cost of the first phase of the Ramayapatnam port is pegged at about Rs. 3,750 crore. The long-pending port at Machilipatnam is the costliest of all (first phase) entailing an expenditure of roughly Rs. 5,840 crore. The State’s only captive port in the Ravva oil field in East Godavari district continues to be of strategic importance by virtue of export of substantial quantities of oil and natural gas by Cairn Energy.

Demand for Warehousing to remain strong in 2021 NEW DELHI: The Indian warehousing and logistics industry had an admirable run last year as Covid-19 forced businesses to focus on continuity plans and supply chain constraints. The growth momentum is expected to continue in 2021 as sectors like e-commerce, FMCG and pharmaceuticals look to penetrate deeper into tier II and III cities. Logistics players and analysts are convinced about the sector’s performance as they say that e-commerce firms will continue to push for cost-efficient and swift last-mile delivery. Besides, the growing demand for cold chains, and with India vying to be a manufacturing hub, the requirement for large automated warehouses and omni-channel logistics solutions will continue to grow. As per Savills India, industrial and warehousing space absorption is expected to grow 83% y-o-y to 47.7 m sq ft in 2021, driven by robust growth in e-commerce and manufacturing. Logistics solutions major DB Schenker points out that the industry is growing at a CAGR of 10.5% in India and is further expected to rise with the Covid-19 vaccine distribution. DB Schenker CEO (cluster India and Indian sub-continent), Vishal Sharma was quoted as saying that supply chain and logistics will experience unprecedented focus in 2021 and beyond. This would be driven by the challenges customers faced and had to overcome in 2020, which made it clear for many organisations, especially SMEs, that having the right partners to support their supply chain and logistics needs is a must to enable growth without disruption. “Customers will engage partners who can bring stability, scale and sustainability. There would be a clear shift in customers’ long-term strategy to make some changes to adjust to new norms, which includes increase in

inventory holding and reducing supply chain costs. Customers will also continuously look out for reliability in service and ability of this segment to scale up and down without incremental costs,” he added. Gxpress Director Praveen Vashistha said that warehousing, which comprises around 10% of the overall logistics cost, has a significant impact on optimising the remaining 90% that includes transportation, inventory management, material handling, packaging, etc. “Warehousing demand in post Covid-19 scenario would follow a hub-and-spoke model, largely with product companies focusing on reducing inefficiencies in supply chain, which happen due to the bullwhip effect, by increasing availability of their products closer to consumption points,” he added. For instance, Vashistha says that tier II cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Va r a n a s i a n d S a h a r a n p u r h a v e started increasing their numbers in terms of handicraft players, who are vocal for local. These cities are getting more attention from

logistics players. Omni-channel strategy has now become central for most of the companies which are i n t o r e t a i l , F M C G a n d pharmaceuticals and has given a big opportunity to third party logistics (3PL) providers. Savills India said that 3 million sq ft of warehousing space was absorbed in 2020 by logistics players in tier II c i t i e s l i k e L u d h i a n a , L u c k n o w, C o i m b a t o r e , J a i p u r, G u w a h a t i , Bhubaneswar, Nagpur and Patna. It expects these cities to gain momentum in 2021 with e-commerce and 3PL firms capitalising on consumption-driven growth and pushing demand for warehouses. “Growing demand for cold chain, pharmaceutical warehouses as well as growth in e-commerce and organised retail are likely to drive warehousing demand in 2021. In addition, strong macro-economic fundamentals and government’s policy support in implementation will continue to fuel growth for the entire sub asset class of industrial and logistics,” Savills India managing director (industrial and logistics), Srinivas N said.

Amazon, Karnataka sign MoU to drive MSME e-commerce exports KARNATAKA: Amazon India signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the department of industries & commerce, Karnataka to help drive e-commerce exports from the state. As part of the MoU, Amazon will train and onboard MSMEs from the state on Amazon Global Selling, its exports programme, enabling them to sell their made in India products globally to Amazon customers across 200+ countries and territories. Amazon Global Selling lowers the entry barrier for Indian MSMEs to expand their business and launch their brands globally from anywhere in India. With this program, homegrown businesses get instant access to global markets from Day 1, benefiting from Amazon’s distribution capabilities and global footprint to scale rapidly, creating a sustainable exports business. Amazon will conduct training, webinars and onboarding workshops for exporters from key MSME clusters like Bellary, Mysore, Channapatna and others.

The workshops will focus on sharing knowledge and imparting training to MSMEs about B2C e-commerce exports and selling worldwide through Amazon’s 17 international marketplaces to over 300 million customers worldwide. These workshops aim to enable MSMEs with the knowledge and tools to launch their brands and grow their business in international markets through Amazon Global Selling. Jagadish Shettar, Minister for large and medium scale Industries, Karnataka, said, “Karnataka has a vibrant automobile, agro, aerospace, textile and garment, biotech, and toys/handicraft sectors which is held together by lakhs of MSMEs. Our partnership with Amazon India will encourage our MSMEs to leverage Amazon’s global presence and showcase their products to customers across the world. This is also an effort to display the strength of the state’s manufacturing and innovation prowess and our government remains committed to make Karnataka an attractive business and

investment destination.” Abhijit Kamra, Director – Global Trade, Amazon India said, “This partnership with the Government of Karnataka is a step towards elevating lakhs of MSMEs from across the state to a global level. The Amazon Global Selling program has enabled more than 70,000 Indian exporters to cross $2billion in cumulative exports, which showcases crores of Made in India products. The program, which had hit cumulative exports of $1billion in 2019, saw a 100% increase in the next 18 months to cross the $2billion milestone. We remain committed to making exports easy for Indian businesses and empower them to tap into their true potential, thus contributing to the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.” The program is rapidly boosting exports from India and helping build global Indian brands. In January 2020, Amazon had pledged to enable $10 billion in cumulative exports by 2025 helping Indian businesses grow by selling online worldwide.
