MSC enhances Indian Subcontinent & U.S. East Coast connections with two services GENEVA: The following announcement supersedes MSC announcement of 15 August about the Indus Express. MSC has revised the rotation of the Indus Express service and is launching a new Indusa service, starting on 1 September 2020. The Indus Express service will focus on North West India, Pakistan, the Middle East and U.S. East Coast markets. The new Indusa service will connect Southeast India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh to U.S. East coast, with a call at Colombo in Sri Lanka to reinforce our offering for cargo shippers in the Indian subcontinent. Both services will operate as standalone MSC services offering competitive transit times from the Middle East and
Indian Subcontinent region to the U.S. East Coast. The U.S. customers benefit from the possibility to import cargo from anywhere in India boosting predictability for effective supply chain planning. Cont’d. Pg. 5
Export scheme may continue until December, but with more check and balances NEW DELHI: In a bid to provide relief to lakhs of exporters, the Piyush Goyal-led Commerce Ministry has suggested fresh steps to hand out export incentives under the Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS), while seeking to limit the outgo and check possible frauds. The Rs 5,000-crore plan will see benefits under MEIS capped at Rs 2 crore per exporter on exports made between September and December. There will be no change in the coverage of MEIS and the applicable rates,
a source familiar with the proposal shared with the revenue department told. To prevent misuse of the scheme by fly-by-night operators, who make claims based on the new importer-export code (IEC), the commerce department has proposed that all such identification numbers obtained on or after a specified date will be ineligible to submit claim for exports made from September 1. The maritime sector in Gujarat has ourished exponentially over time with the state’s ports commanding a lion’s share in the total national maritime trafc. There still prevails an immense scope for further development on Gujarat’s coastline. Hence, a cargo ow study (being a standard industry practice for planning future port capacity and identify infrastructure requirements and bottlenecks for promoting port trafc) will provide a scientic methodology for developing commodity wise capacity requirement, for enabling optimum port capacity planning and increasing trafc at Gujarat Ports. The cargo ow study will be pertinent for Gujarat MaritimeBoard (GMB) to keep pace with the developments happening in the port sector nationally as well as internationally. Accordingly, online tenders are invited from eligible agencies for “Undertaking cargo ow study and scenarios for the Gujarat port sector and provide assistance for creating Trafc Intelligence Unit at GMB”. Evergreen building Logistics Park in Taiwan TAIWAN: Evergreen Marine Corporation’s logistics park development in Dayuan District in Taoyuan, Taiwan, is progressing well, with the facility set for completion in late 2021. According to the Taiwanese liner operator’s TW$2.6 billion (US$884.66 million) plan, there will be a four-storey warehouse and a seven-storey office building, with storage space of about 115,710m2 and an office area of 6,215m2. The warehouse has an area of 1.16 million m2, and the second storey of the warehouse is a mezzanine floor. All floors of the warehouse have driveways for container trucks. The third to fifth storeys have respective heights of 9.9m, 7.3m and 7.3m. Accordingly, the clearance heights for vehicles wishing to enter the third to fifth storeys of the warehouse are 8.6m, 6m and 6m, respectively. Work on the facility began on 18 February 2020. The logistics park is close to both Taoyuan Airport and Taipei
Port, making for convenient storage for sea and air transportation. Speaking at a recent seminar, Evergreen Executive Chen I-Chung said that having suitable warehousing services is integral to the entire container transportation supply chain. He said, “There are relatively few modern digital warehouses that can be driven to the second floor or above to store goods in logistics vehicles. Because of this feature, the logistics park can serve a wider range of customers, including e-commerce retailers, importers and exporters.” Chen added that with the rapid development of online shopping and cross-border e-commerce in recent years, the speed of goods delivery has become key to e-commerce players' grabbing market share, which in turn drives the continuous growth of warehousing demand.

The idea is to ensure that till that time a restricted MEIS will cover nearly 98% of the exporters who claim MEIS benefits. “The commerce department wants to protect the smaller players so that they remain unaffected by the changes,” said a government source. The proposal sent to the revenue department, which has capped MEIS claims at Rs 10,000 crore, is based on an
analysis of claims for 2018-19. The 2%, who are left out, may not be impacted significantly as they are large exporters, an officer said. A large number of exporters have factored in the benefits while negotiating the price of their consignments. An advance notice of four months prior to the end date of MEIS will provide certainty for future pricing decisions, the commerce department has argued.
Exporters are complaining that the revenue department’s decision is a fresh blow to their business at a time when orders have fallen sharply due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving many battling for survival. “Genuine exporters should be protected and allowed to claim benefits for exports during these four months, while also avoiding the possibility of fraud,” said a source.
Adani Ports rides on acquisitions to withstand covid-induced downturn, feel Equity Analysts MUMBAI: Adani Po r t s a n d S p e c i a l Economic Zone Ltd recouped a large part of its post covid-19 losses and is now only 5% lower than its precovid highs. While the company’s June quarter results were weak, there have been signs of a recovery, with a 6% growth in volumes in July. In comparison, total cargo volumes at major ports (for all commodities) declined 13% in July. The rise in Adani’s volumes and market share gains has got analysts to revise their volume estimates. “We have revised our FY21E-22 volume estimates higher to account for the same,” analysts at Jefferies India Pvt. Ltd said in a note. The company said it expects to complete the acquisition of Krishnapatnam Port Co. in the current quarter (Q2FY21) and Dighi Port by the end of this year.
Behind the acquisitions is Adani Ports’ strategy of gaining foothold in established trade routes and attracting cargo volumes through efficient and value-added services. Analysts expect the firm to replicate the strategy with the latest acquisitions as well. The Dhamra and Kattupalli ports in the east coast are a case in point. Business volumes at Dhamra gained traction after Adani Ports enhanced port-handling capabilities and addressed evacuation issues. Kattupalli port benefited from market share gains from the Chennai port region, points out Nomura Research. “Adani Ports has a track record of gaining market share by establishing ports within an established ecosystem. The same was witnessed with Mundra, which has gained on west coast, Dhamra in the east coast and Kattupalli in the Chennai cluster. We believe that Dighi will aid in gaining market share from JNPT until JNPT is able to establish a deepwater port at Wadhawan,” analysts at
Nomura Research said in a note. JNPT is Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, the largest container port in India. Growing cargo volumes in east coast ports at the industry level are helping Adani Ports’ growth in the region. “Management is optimistic on Dhamra and Kattupalli seeing strong growth within ports. Interestingly, east coast has accounted for 38% of incremental volumes in the last 3 years and ended FY20 at 20% of overall,” added analysts at Jefferies. The reduction in inter-corporate loans and the management’s focus on cash flows reassured investors. Acquisitions will push up leverage in the current fiscal. But incremental earnings are expected to soften the net debt to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) ratio. While all these add to investor optimism, any unrelated acquisition or large investments outside the current business can halt the momentum.

However, increasing traffic on roads is leading to congestion and delays to passenger vehicles. This will cause unsafe travel conditions. Also, delays at interstate check posts due to inspection of various documents, etc. contribute to increased travel time. Rail transport is most fuel efficient of all means of transport and is much safer than road. DGFT lays out procedure to seek licence for exports of N95 masks NEW DELHI: Online applications filed by exporters only from September 7 to 9 will be considered for getting licence or permission from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) for shipments of N95 masks, according to a notice. This is a part of the procedure and criteria laid out by the directorate for exporters to file applications to seek licence for shipments of N95/FFP2
masks, the commerce ministry said in a recent notice. Exports of 50 lakh masks per month are permitted. “Export of only one crore total units of N95/FFP2 masks will be allowed for the month of August and September,” it said. As per the laid down procedure and criteria for submission and approval of applications for the export, manufacturer exporters can apply
through DGFT”s online system only to seek licence. “Online applications for export of N95/FFP2 masks filed from Septeber 7 to 9, 2020, will only be considered,” it added. It said the validity of the export licence will be for three months only. The exporter will have to submit certain documents that include copy of purchase order or invoice and a copy of Import Export Code (IEC).
Dredging Corporation of India Net Profit at Rs 11 cr in June quarter HYDERABAD: Dredging Corporation of India has reported a manifold jump in net profit to Rs 11.45 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2020. It clocked a net profit of Rs 0.81 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago, the public sector enterprise said in a regulatory filing to the BSE.
Its total income during the quarter under review stood at Rs 168.22 crore as against Rs 199.65 crore in the year-ago period. Total expenses declined to Rs 156.44 crore as against Rs 198.17 crore in the year-ago quarter. The company is involved in maintenance dredging, capital dredging, beach nourishment, land
reclamation, shallow water dredging, project management consultancy and marine construction. In June, Shipping Minister Mansukh Lal Mandaviya had directed Dredging Corporation to explore the possibilities of recycling of dredging material on coastline as well as on riverine ports of India.
Nearly 90% commercial vehicles back on road, Toll collections indicate: ICRA MUMBAI: Post the resumption of tolling on national highways from April 20, 2020, the movement of commercial vehicles picked up significant pace over the last three months and has reached near 90 percent of pre-Covid levels in July, according to the credit rating agency ICRA. H o w e v e r, t h e m o v e m e n t i n passenger vehicles is yet to recover fully. The unabated rise in Covid-19 infections in the unlock phase, localised re-imposition of lockdowns in several states, and heavy monsoons in many parts of the country had interrupted this recovery in the first fortnight of July. Nevertheless, the toll collections reached 87 percent of pre-Covid levels in the second fortnight of July 2020. Rajeshwar Burla, Vice President, Corporate Ratings, ICRA said, “Majority of the national highway stretches being arterial routes have 70-75 percent of toll collections from commercial vehicle s; passeng e r vehicles account for less than a quarter of toll collections. While 90 percent of
commercial vehicles are back on roads, the passenger vehicle movement is less than 60 percent of pre-covid levels. Overall, the traffic in 4M FY2021 has rebounded quite well, which is encouraging. This is also corroborated by the e-way bills generated. This pace of recovery, if sustained, the overall reduction in toll collections for national highway projects could be less than 10 percent in Fy2021.” The sample considered for the analysis is spread across 11 states with Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Telangana accounting for 63 percent of the total sample. The localised lockdowns imposed in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra had adversely affected the toll collections for the stretches located in these states in July 2020 (reported 65-75 percent of preCovid levels). Excluding these stretches, the other entities in the sample reported around 90 percent of pre-Covid collections in July 2020. As for the impact on the ratings for ICRA rated BOT (Toll) road portfolio, In
4M FY2021, the ratings agency upgraded one issuer which had achieved COD a year ago and demonstrated significant ramp-up in toll collections. There were three rating downgrades; the rating action in two of these three issuers was on account of breach of rating triggers due to expected deterioration in coverage metrics on account of reduced toll collections. In the case of the third issuer, the rating action was on account of adverse regulatory development wherein NHAI had served termination notice – downgraded and placed on rating watch. There are two entities for which outlook have been revised to Negative. “Around 85 percent of ICRA rated toll road projects (excluding default category credits) have debt service reserve (liquidity buffer) greater than or equal to one-quarter of a debt obligation (includes principal and interest) and are resilient enough to absorb the Covid-19 induced revenue shock,” Burla added.
Odisha’s Gopalpur Port plans LNG Terminal, Petrochemical industries B H U B A N E S H WA R : T h e Gopalpur Port Limited (GPL) in Odisha has planned to set up a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal and an investment of Rs 2,000 crore for setting up fertilizer and petrochemical industries, an official said. Similarly, an edible oil refinery is also on cards, the official said. R e c e n t l y, G P L M a n a g i n g Director Amit Saboo briefed Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy about the ongoing activities of the port and future investment on industrialisation in the periphery of Gopalpur Port. Tripathy expressed satisfaction over the investment plan and projects envisioned by GPL authorities in
coming years. He chaired a review meeting on various issues related to developmental activities. As the issue of capping on transportation of iron ores to the Gopalpur port came up during the d i s c u s s i o n , Tr i p a t h y s a i d t h a t artificial capping by the deputy director of mines should stop. While there are no restrictions on the loading of trucks from mines of the state for Vishakhapatnam and G a n g a v a r a m Po r t s i n A n d h r a Pradesh, there is a restriction on loading for GPL. As a result, the exporters are facing a tough time and stiff competition and there will be a huge
loss of foreign exchange earnings to the nation also, said sources. Tripathy asked the officials to take up the issue with the Department of Steel and Mines in this regard. GPL Chief Executive Officer Sandeep Agar wal infor med the ongoing activities in the Covid-19 pandemic and the expansion proposals. While GPL requires 1,200 acres of land, 393 acres have been allotted to them so far. The port authorities have requested for another 800 acres. The Revenue Department has recently forwarded 119 acres in favour of GPL, officials informed. Road and rail connectivity issues were also discussed in the meeting.

India-ASEAN can resolve differences, take trade to $300 billion: Piyush Goyal NEW DELHI: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently said India-ASEAN trade can reach $300 billion and the two can resolve their differences by addressing concerns of all nations and businesses. “India and ASEAN have not been able to harness the full trade potential, for various reasons, but now is the time to open matrix to expand trade, address concerns of all nations and businesses, and resolve the differences,” he said
recently. India’s merchandise trade with the 10-member ASEAN or Association of Southeast Asian Nations in FY20 was $86.86 billion. “He extended India’s friendship and partnership to ASEAN through businesses, so that together both the partners are able to succeed, secure future, work together, attain prosperity, and achieve a target of $300 billion trade,” the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement quoting Goyal.
The two sides inked a free trade agreement (FTA) and have now agreed to review the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement that was signed in 2009 after New Delhi complained of a burgeoning trade deficit with the grouping. India had a trade deficit of $23.88 billion with ASEAN in FY20. ASEAN is also part of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership trade bloc that India exited last year.
G-20 goods trade decline in second quarter, steepest since 2009 crisis: OECD PARIS: The decline in goods trade in the second quarter of the year in the G20 countries was the steepest since the financial crisis of 2009, the Organisation for Economic Co - operation and Development (OECD) said. The Parisbased organisation also said recent data point to a continued improvement in the trade scenario. While China was the only G20 economy to record export growth in the quarter, it said India and Indonesia
experienced “particularly sharp falls in exports”. “Covid-19 measures introduced in most countries sent G20 merchandise trade plummeting in the second quarter of 2020,” it said. Compared with the first quarter of 2020, exports fell by 17.7% and imports by 16.7%, the largest fall since the 2009 financial crisis. India’s exports were down 30.1% while imports declined 47.4% in the second quarter.
As per the report, the collapse in trade occurred in April when most countries had stringent Covid-19 containment measures in place. However, data for May and June point to a partial recovery from the April lows in nearly all G20 economies, as containment measures eased. July data, in those economies where data are available, point to a continued improvement.

Ltd, Kobe, Japan on the successful delivery of tug, DOLPHIN NO. 29 on 19 August 2020. This is the fourth, in a series of 13 tugs, built for Adani Group. The tug will be engaged in mooring and towing work for berthing and un-berthing at the Adani Vizhinjam Port and on the coast of India. Constructed under single classification of IRClass, the tow tug with 55t BP capacity is equipped with diesel propulsion engines totalling 4,400 PS and Z-drive propellers. The Z driver propeller provides for 360-degrees manoeuvrability allowing for rapid changes in thrust direction and tug direction.
Measuring 34.5m in length, DOLPHIN No. 29 is also equipped with an external firefighting system complying with IRClass class notation Agni 1, which enables a total output of 2,400 cubic metres per hour equipping the tug with early stage firefighting capability. July Air Cargo demand stable, capacity remains constrained: IATA LONDON: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for global air freight markets in July showing air cargo demand is stable but at lower levels than 2019. While there is some month-to-month improvement, it is at a slower pace than some of the traditional leading indicators would suggest. This is due to the capacity constraint from the loss of available belly cargo space as passenger aircraft remain parked.
Global demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTKs*), fell by 13.5% in July (-15.5% for inter national operations) compared to the previous year. That is a modest improvement from the 16.6% year-on-year drop recorded in June. Seasonally-adjusted demand grew by 2.6% month-on-month in July. Global capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometers (ACTKs), shrank by 31.2% in July ( 32.9%
for international operations) compared to the previous year. This is a small improvement from the 33.4% year-onyear drop in June. Belly capacity for international air cargo shrank by 70.5% in July compared to the previous year owing to the withdrawal of passenger services amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This was partially offset by a 28.8% increase in capacity through expanded use of freighter aircraft.
