MSC : INDIA-AFRICA SERVICE – NEW DIRECT CALL TO NIGERIA GENEVA: MSC is pleased to introduce a new direct call at Tincan, Lagos on its IAS – India Africa service connecting Middle East, India and Sri Lanka with West Africa. A barge service between the terminal and Apapa off dock will be offered as well to smooth the cargo transport. By offering Direct Call to Tincan, MSC offers faster and a broader coverage in the West Africa region. The transit times will be significantly enhanced. The new rotation will be as follows, starting with the MSC LEVINA, voyage IW220A from Abu Dhabi on 16 May 2022: Abu Dhabi – Jebel Ali – Mundra – Nhava Sheva – Colombo – Tema – Tincan – Lome – Cotonou – Cape Town – Durban – Abu Dhabi.
APM Terminals Pipavav secures Jade Express PIPAVAV: APM Terminals Pipavav, one of the leading gateway ports in Western India, has secured a new service Jade Express mainly for transhipment cargoes. The weekly service, introduced by Maersk, will connect Port Pipavav to Port Qasim. Jade Express connects Pipavav perfectly in time for the MECL service [West Bound for the North America] and provides same day connectivity on the FI3 service [for the Far East]. Cont’d. Pg. 19

GANDHIDHAM: Shri Sanjay Mehta, I F S , C h a i r m a n , D e e n d a y a l Po r t Authority, Kandla, has been felicitated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendra Patel as “DYNAMIC BUREAUCRAT” during the award function “GUJARATNU GAURAV” “ગજ ુ રાતનુંગૌરવ-2022” (Pride of Gujarat) which has been organised on the theme of celebration 'GUJARAT DAY', falling on 1st May at Ahmedabad. He was honoured for this Award for his contribution/role in the overall development of Deendayal Port.
Under the able guidance of Mr. Mehta, the cargo handling of the port continued unabated and ensured that there is no shortage of essential commodities in the country, even during the difficult times of Corona. He set-up oxygen plants at three different locations during Covid pandemic. In a major contribution to the Green India Revolution initiative, during Mr. Mehta's tenure, a Man Made Forest was developed by planting more than 1 lakh 10 thousand trees and gifting it to the Society, which is today known as 'Gandhidham's Rotary Forest'. During 2021-22, Deendayal Port has handled 127 million metric tons of cargo and retained its No.1 rank amongst all the Major Ports of India and also achieved many milestones throughout the year.
TRAI starts pilot study at Deendayal Port, Kandla, Gujarat for deploying 5G using street furniture GANDHIDHAM: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in association with Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) launched a pilot named "5th Generation (5G) Small Cell and Aerial Fiber deployment using Deendayal Port Street Furniture" in a kick-off meeting. Small Cell are equipment which will be deployed for upcoming 5G networks. It uses higher frequencies spectrum to provide ultra-high broadband speed and are placed closer to user so that to provide quick responses to user's request. Street furniture are used to denote things like electric poles, bus stand, traffic lights etc. The pilot will help in understanding challenges in 5G small cell deployment at Indian ports. Hundreds of 5G Small Engineering Center (TEC), meeting was also attended by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) along with higher officials of BSNL, JIO, Airtel, Vodafone Idea Limited and Indus Towers. The team of Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) was led by Deputy Chairman. Vodafone Idea, Airtel, JIO and BSNL along with Indus Towers will be jointly working on this pilot with Deendayal Port Authority (DPA). Cells are needed to be installed in a square KM of area to provide good coverage. Use of Street furniture already available at ports like poles etc. can be used for mounting these 5G Small Cells, obviating the need for erecting thousands of new towers. This will not only ensure faster deployment of 5G but also unlock true potential of underutilized street furniture at ports. Ports, using these highly reliable 5G networks will be able to launch Enterprise Solutions which will in turn help them to compete with best of international ports. Apart from senior officials of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Telecommunication
Better productivity and efficiency of Indian ports will help in more efficient supply chain and boost to overall Indian economy. Worldwide 5G deployment at ports and various use cases are resulting in improved operations, decreased costs and enhanced productivity. Similar pilots were started by TRAI at Delhi International Airport, Smart City Bhopal and Namma Mero Bengaluru also.

Essar Ports Vizag Terminal handles the largest dry bulk vessel and records largest parcel in Vizag Port VIZAG/ MUMBAI: Essar Ports V i z a g Te r m i n a l Ltd (EVTL), the largest iron ore handling complex in India today said that it has handled the largest dry bulk vessel, and recorded the largest parcel in Vizag Port. On 20th April 2022, the M.V. Star Eleni, a bulk carrier built in 2018, sailing under the flag of Liberia was successfully berthed at EVTL. This was the largest bulk carrier handled by EVT to date loaded with DWT- 2,07,555 MT, LOA- 299.88 Meters and BEAM- 50 Meters. The terminal created another milestone by
successfully loading a record 1,65,000 Metric Tons (MT) of iron ore fines on M.V. Star Eleni vessel. With the Vizag team achieving such massive scale in a seamless m a n n e r, M r. R a j i v A g a r w a l , Operating Partner (Infrastructure), Essar and Managing Director, E s s a r Po r t s , c o m m e n t e d , “ I congratulate the team at Vizag. CONCOR mulls entering into Bulk handling N E W D E L H I : CONCOR is planning to enter into bulk handling and movement of cement/ fly ash as per industry requirement. Indonesia export ban traps 290,000 Tonnes of Palm oil shipments for India NEW DELHI: Indonesia's wider palm oil export ban has trapped at least 290,000 tonnes of the edible oil meant to be headed to India at ports and oil mills in the world's top producer, four industry officials told Reuters. The disruption in shipments after Indonesia widened its export ban to include crude and refined palm oil will create a vegetable oil shortage in top importer India, the officials said. Second-biggest exporter Malaysia is already struggling to meet higher
demand levels and is asking for near record prices for prompt shipments, they said. "Our vessel of 16,000 tonnes is stuck at Kumai port in Indonesia," said PradeepChowdhry, managing director of Gemini Edibles & Fats India Pvt Ltd, which buys around 30,000 tonnes of Indonesian palm oil every month. "We don't know when Indonesia will lift the ban, and stuck shipments will be delivered." India is the world's biggest importer
of palm oil and relies on Indonesia for nearly half of the 700,000 tonnes it takes in every month. Buyers are now rushing to make purchases from Malaysia, but Kuala Lumpur cannot fill the demand, said SandeepBajoria, chief executive of Sunvin Group, a vegetable oil brokerage and consultancy firm. Malaysian sellers are obliged to meet their old commitments and cannot provide palm oil for prompt shipments, he said.

Commerce Ministry makes case for encouraging domestic manufacturing of 102 items to cut imports NEW DELHI: Gold, natural gas, crude palm oil, integrated circuits, personal computer, insulin injection, cameras, urea, antibiotics, turbo-jets, lithium-ion accumulators, refined copper, machines and mechanical appliances, are among 102 priority items that the Government has identified whose imports are high and need immediate interventions for domestic production opportunities. These comprise 57.66% of India’s total imports. In an analysis of India’s imports, the Commerce Department said that of the 102 products, emphasis may be given to 18 items which have been consistently growing and have a significant share consistently across the long, medium and short terms. “As the data indicates these items have been demanded consistently for import in all periods and supply rigidities for these items in the domestic economy needs to be
corrected,” the Commerce Department said in an analysis of import items for domestic production opportunity. The study, done on HS codes at 8digit (tariff lines), analyses items which have an average import value of $500 million for March-August 2021 (short run) and $1 billion per year across three years (FY19-FY21) and ten years (FY12-FY21). “Industry associations, manufacturers and business leaders may consider exploring domestic capacity expansion in these items with a view to meet the unmet domestic demand which in turn will fuel economic growth and create employment opportunities,” the department said in the report. In FY22, India’s imports were a record $611.89 billion. The Ministry has also identified 88 items with high growth potential. These
include gold, natural gas, crude palm oil, integrated circuits, parts of telephonic/telegraphic apparatus and personal computer. The long-run analysis (2011-12 to 2020-21) showed that 274 items have exhibited a surge in growth in the long run. Major items are non-industrial diamonds, steam coal, natural gas, coking coal, parts of telephonic / telegraphic apparatus, crude palm oil, aeroplanes, personal computer, urea, cr ude soya-bean oil, monolithic integrated circuits, solar /photovoltaic cells, aluminium scrap, sunflower seed oil, turbo-jets and cashew nuts. Maximum number of products-18have been identified for the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, 15 for the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, 13 for Ministry of Electronics and IT, and nine each for heavy industries and mines ministry.
Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina offers Chittagong Port for use by India DHAKA: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently called on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who offered her country's main seaport - Chittagong Port - to India's NortheasternStates like Assam and Tripura to enhance connectivity between the two neighbours. Jaishankar, who arrived here on Thursday on a brief official visit, handed over an invitation to Hasina on her Indian counterpart NarendraModi's behalf to visit New Delhi. "Thank Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her war m reception. Conveyed personal greetings of PM @narendramodi. Our bilateral relations are moving from strength to strength under the guidance of the two leaders," Jaishankar tweeted. During the meeting, Prime Minister Hasina said that the two countries have to increase the connectivity further, her
Press Secretary IhsanulKarim said. She told Jaishankar that t h e e n h a n c e d connectivity was needed for mutual benefit while it would particularly benefit India's northeastern region in using B a n g l a d e s h ' s s o u t h e a s t e r n Chittagong port, Karim said. "If the connectivity is increased, the Indian northeastern states -like Assam and Tripura- can have access to the seaport in Chattogram," she said. The Bangladesh premier noted that initiative were taken to resume crossborder routes between Bangladesh and India which were stopped during the 1965 India-Pakistan war, when Bangladesh
was eastern wing of Pakistan. Karim said a number of bilateral and international issues were discussed during Prime Minister Hasina's more than half an hour long meeting with Jaishankar. Jaishankar later held talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart AK Abdul Momen and then jointly briefed the media.
ECGC to seek RBI’s nod to make payment in foreign currency to exporters NEW DELHI: ECGC Ltd., the Government of India enterprise that provides export credit insurance, is in the process of approaching the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to authorise it to deal with foreign currency for the benefit of exporters. “We are trying various methods to help reduce the cost for exporters. We are applying to the RBI so that they can give us authorisation to deal with foreign currency and we will provide funds in foreign currency and factoring will be done in the foreign currency in which bills are drawn,” M. Senthilnathan, CMD, ECGC said recently. “So that we can charge interest as applicable in the western markets and some margin. Once permission is given to ECGC as authorised dealer of factoring in foreign currency, may be, we will do more factoring. Currently only 3 to 4 exporters
are doing factoring,” he added. He was speaking at a webinar organised by ECGC on “The importance of Export Credit Insurance for MSME exporters in post-COVID trade”. Stating that ECGC had a developmental mandate for promotion of exports, he said the whole approach of the institution has been market-oriented and not for profit. He urged exporters to grow their international business by giving credit to buyers and take adequate insurance. A. Sakthivel, President, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) said every exporter must take credit insurance. He urged the government and the ECGC to devise special credit insurance products for MSMEs that form a large chunk of the exporter count. He also said the ECGC should
consider setting a fixed time limit for settlement of claims and go online for the convenience of exporters. Ramesh Rajah, President, (Coffee Exporters Association) &Chairman of Ramesh Exports Pvt. Ltd. urged the ECGC to come out with commodityspecific credit insurance covers to reduce the cost for coffee exporters. “If ECGC is increasing the rates, they should do a commodity-wise analysis. They should come out with differentiated risk premium on different commodities based on risk factors,” he said. “Why should I pay high premium [to offset the losses caused in commodities that have high risk]? MSMEs should be given a helping hand,” he said “Raw materials, capital and logistics are the major costs for exporters. All costs are going up and risks are increasing,” he added.

Container prices fall in India amidst global supply chain disruptions, container trade optimism for shipping companies HAMBURG: Container xChange, the world’s leading neutral marketplace for shipping containers and a technology logistics infrastructure company, released the findings of its container logistics analysis for the Indian container logistics market. Key findings from the analysis show that there has been a general decline in average prices of 20 ft DC and 40 ft HC standard shipping containers across the ports of Chennai, NhavaSheva and Mundra from Mid-January 2022 till date, after having peaked in the months of August- September 2021. However, the prices are much higher than the prices from January 2021 (40% higher in Chennai, 36% higher in NhavaSheva and 36% in Mundra for 40 ft HC containers). The average prices have increased by 41% from $1341 on 1st January 2021 to $2269 as on 23 April 2022 at the port of NhavaSheva for 20 ft DC cargo worthy container. The average price of 40 ft HC container in Chennai were $5127 in mid-January 2022 which fell to $4297 on 18th April 2022. A fall of 16% since 17th January 2022. Another key finding is the rise in Container Availability Index (CAx) values from week 14 (4 April till date). The CAx (Container Availability Index) is a tool that allows container logistics businesses to monitor the import and export moves of full containers around major ports. A CAx value of 0.5 means that the same number of containers leave and enter a port in the same week. CAx values of > 0.5 means that more containers enter and CAx values of < 0.5 means more containers leave a specific port. 20 DC Cargo Worthy Container CAx values rise when there are more inbounds than outbounds and if the CAx values maintain at a higher level, then that means that there is a problem of containers piling up, or there is a rise in blank sailings or carriers missing calls at the Indian ports while the containers that are transported are not moving out back at the same speed.
“This has an explanation that corroborates well with the macro-economic factors. The Colombo crisis has led to more transshipment containers being directed to the east coast ports in India.” said Christian Roeloffs, founder and CEO, Container xChange. 40 HC Cargo Worthy Container Industry data available from the Indian ports also indicates that there has been a rise in the container throughput volumes by ports, namely, JNPT, Chennai and Adani (Mundra) ports. (See notes section for data) Commenting on India’s state of the container logistics market, Christian Roeloffs, founder and CEO, Container xChange said, “The crisis in Colombo, a major transhipment hub for Indian cargo, has led to more traffic of containers at the Indian ports. For India to leverage the opportunities presented by the global supply chain dysfunction, it is important to improve the cargo handling capabilities at India’s ports, build stronger hinterland transportation and must attempt to bring down the logistical costs. It is very encouraging to see that the average turnaround time for
container vessels at major ports has improved which will benefit trade in times to come.” However, there are other bottlenecks that need addressal. According to a joint report conducted by Container xChange and Fraunhofer – CML, one of the world’s leading applied research organizations earlier this year (January), the average median time containers spent in Indian depots in 2021 was 22 days, while in China it was just 5 days. This is one of the many bottlenecks that shippers face when exporting cargo filled containers from India. transportation, container movement, depot management, etc. It is not so much about reinventing the wheel for the country, but about how the industry can better benefit from the technology and inventory already there in the global value chains, at least in the short to mid-term.” CAxNhavaSheva (JNPT) 20 ft DC Amongst the Indian ports, Mundra has the costliest 40 HC cargo worthy containers {Ranks #3 worldwide after Warsaw ($2670) and Milano ($2348)}, at $4269 as on 26 April 2022 followed by NhavaSheva ($4261) and Chennai ($4247). Mundra has the costliest 20 ft DC container at $2311 as on 26 April 2022 followed by NhavaSheva ($2268) and Chennai ($2259).
Intra-Asia Trade delays escalate more recently MUMBAI: While ocean freight rates may have fallen temporarily, China’s shutdown is lengthening transit times on intra-Asian trade routes. The CEO of Conbox Logistics in India, RakeshPandit, noted that while freight prices from China have dropped in the recent month, transit times remained a “big concern.” “Over the last eight weeks, freight rates have progressively escalated, making things exceedingly uncertain,” he continued. “Average transit from China to NhavaSheva and Mundra Port was between three or four weeks, but now the same service is above five or six weeks. Our mid-March shipments are still lying at transhipment ports and the ETA is showing second week of May.” According to Peter Sundara, Global Head of Ocean Freight at a major Singapore-based cargo owner, the delays are also impacting trade between China and Australia and New Zealand.
He explained: “There aren’t many schedule omissions on the trade from China, the vessels are still calling, but we are seeing a lot of delays due to the lack of truckers there, and there’s not enough space in the warehouses.” Conversely, he said, the drop in demand ex-China had led to “positive ripple effects” at ports in South-east Asia, with Singapore and Port Klang, for example, relatively free from congestion. A major issue during previous lockdowns in China was the slowdown in supply of raw materials and intermediate goods, especially for intra-Asia tradelanes, given the region’s reliance on Chinese suppliers for manufacturing. However, Mr Sundara said, this time macro economic factors were having a bigger impact, noting: “Raw materials have become very expensive because of high inflation, so some shippers are postponing production.”
Spot rates are sliding across the board, he added, and carriers are “facing downward rate pressure for the first time in over two years”. He said: “China is about to enter a five-day holiday. So there will be a lot of pent-up demand after the lockdowns, if production starts to ramp up again. However, any post-lockdown cargo rush could be negated by upcoming additional capacity. For example, ANL has a new service from Shanghai slated for 31 May.” Mr Sundara also wondered how carriers would respond to the downward rate pressure they’re facing. “Will they keep rates high and sacrifice utilisation, or focus on maintaining market share? “What also remains to be seen is the impact the reopening of borders has on domestic consumption and demand, as hundreds of thousands of people are travelling overseas and starting to spend their money on holidays,” he added.

J M Baxi Ports & Logistics buys 26% stake in Visakha Container Terminal from D P World
MUMBAI: J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Ltd, a unit of the Mumbai-based 105-year-old J M Baxi Group, has acquired the residual 26% stake in Visakha Container Terminal Pvt Ltd from DP World. The deal means that Visakha Container Terminal is now 100% owned by J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Ltd. The acquisition gives J M Baxi complete control over this large hub terminal on the east coast, cementing its strong position as the dominant provider of integrated logistics and ports services on the east coast of India. With the extensive terminal and rail network on the east coast, it is now positioned to give shipping lines and large importers and exporters a one-stop solution for their door-to-door shipping needs. J M Baxi is now the most vertically integrated maritime logistics company on the east coast.
Visakha Container Terminal has a capacity of 1.30 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and is part of the central government-owned Visakhapatnam Port Authority. Starting operations in 2003 on a 30-year concession, VCT began with a capacity of about 600,000 TEUs. Going from strength to strength, the terminal handled 512,000 TEUs in FY 22, up from 48,100 TEUs in FY21. In March 2022, a new part of the terminal was opened, which can handle an additional capacity of 750,000 TEUs. This expansion increased the terminal’s total capacity to 1,300,000 TEUs and its quay length to 845 metres. With this addition, there is now more flexibility when berthing vessels at VCT, even when they arrive out of their scheduled window. The new facility along with its specialised equipment will speed up the evacuation of containers, enhance operational efficiency and facilitate the faster movement of shipments, thereby reducing the cost of logistics and improving the effectiveness of the supply chain for the export-import trade. Additionally, it will enable faster turnaround times for vessels, and it provides space for new services to call at VCT. The increased yard capacity also increases the room available for stacking containers.
