A Vietnam-based researcher has successfully created high temperature-resistant paints, called nano fireproofing paints, using nano materials derived from rice husk, according to local sources. high temperatures of up to 1,300 degrees Celsius and can protect surfaces, such as concrete, steel or wood for a period of 4 to 6 hours, adding that tests over surfaces painted with nano fireproofing paint under very high temperatures for about five hours proved successful.She noted that rice husk; a bye-product of paddy rice is very cheap and has high silica content, which can be put to other uses. Rice production in Vietnam yields over 10 million tons of rice husks each year; some of the rice husk is wasted or burnt while some part of it is used by farmers as fuel or fertilizers.The newly created paints can help Vietnam in saving millions of dong on paint imports, said the Chairman of Viet Nam Associations of Science and Technology. They can also prove a rich source of foreign income to Vietnam, as they are being recognized in foreign countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. Pakistan has exported around 2.66 million tons rice, including basmati and non-basmati, in the first ten months of the current fiscal year (FY) 2013-14 (July 2013 - June 2014), down about 5% from around 2.74 million tons exported during the same period in FY 2012-13, according to provisional data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).Pakistan‟s basmati rice exports in July 2013 – April 2014 stood at around 514,541 tons, down about 7% from around 550,548 tons exported during the same period in the previous fiscal year. Pakistan's nonbasmati rice exports in July 2013 – April 2014 have also declined to around 2.14 million tons, down about 8% from around 2.32 million tons exported during the same period in the previous fiscal year.
However, Pakistan's rice exports are higher in terms of value. Pakistan earned $1.87 billion from total exports in July 2013 - April 2014, up about 18% from about $1.59 billion earned during the same period last year. Earnings from basmati rice exports in July 2013 – April 2014 stood at around $545 million, up about 3% from around $529 million during the same period in the previous year, while non-basmati rice exports' earnings stood at around $1.3 billion, up about 30% compared to around $1 billion (using historical exchange rates) in the same period in FY 2012-13.Pakistan exported about 3.4 million tons of rice worth about $1.92 billion in FY 2012-13. Oryza Overnight Recap - Chicago Rough Rice Futures Slightly Higher Overnight as Beans and Corn Rocket to Over 1% Gains May 22, 2014
Chicago rough rice futures for Jul delivery were paused 2 cents per cwt (about $0.44 per ton) higher overnight at $15.290 per cwt (about $337 per ton) as of 8:00am Chicago time. The other grains are seen higher this morning ahead of floor trading in Chicago: soybeans are currently seen about 1.7% higher, wheat was paused about 0.5% higher, and corn is noted about 1.3% higher. U.S. stock index futures pointed to a mildly higher open on Wall Street on Thursday, with initial jobless claims rising by 28,000 to 326,000 last week and he fourweek average falling by 1,000 to 322,500. Stock futures held slight gains after the Labor Department report, while the U.S. dollar gained against currency rivals and the 10-year Treasury yield held at 2.537 percent. April existing home sales figures will be released at 10 a.m., and should show a slight rise, building on March's gains. Also due out is the Conference Board's index of leading indicators, at 10 a.m., along with weekly natural gas inventories. Stocks rallied on Wednesday after the publication of minutes from the Federal Reserve's latest policy meeting. The minutes showed central bankers had discussed ways to normalize interest rates, but had said that no rate action was in the immediate pipeline. U.S. stock index futures are currently trading marginally higher, gold is currently trading about 1% higher, crude oil is seen trading about 0.1% lower, and the U.S. dollar is currently trading about 0.1% higher at 8:00am Chicago time. Thailandâ€&#x;s army chief declared a military coup saying the army needs to seize control of the situation in the country with immediate effect from today, citing a possible escalation of political violence. Wednesday's crisis talks between the army, proand anti-government protestors, representatives from the government and the Election Commission as well as the Senate members concluded in a stalemate. He appealed to the public keep cool and carry on as usual, reaffirming that the military was trying to restore peace in the country.Meanwhile, Thailand's Commerce Ministry is planning to provide support to falling rice prices in the domestic market by organizing flea markets, informal markets where rice farmers can sell their produce directly at market prices, from May - September this year, according to local sources.The flea markets will be initiated in 32 provinces across the country, according to the Director-General of the Internal Trade Department. He told local media that the rice millers in the respective provinces would attend the flea markets and buy paddy directly from farmers. He noted that this arrangement would ensure that prices do not fall extensively. The flea markets would be a better alternative in the absence of government policy and assistance measures to rice farmers, said sources from the Commerce Ministry.However, it is not clear exactly how the flea markets will improve prices. After the caretaker government discontinued the rice mortgage scheme in February 2014, the government has not been on the market, buying paddy at 15,000 baht (about $462) per ton, about twice the market rate. Meanwhile, many farmers have been complaining of accruing losses due to lower paddy prices, due in part to government trying to sell rice stocks from previous crops. Wholesale prices of paddy rice declined to around 7,000 - 7,500 baht (around $215 - $230) per ton in May 2014 from around 12,000 - 14,000 baht (around $369 - $430) per ton in the beginning of this year. Meanwhile, the Public Debt Management Office (PDMO) is negotiating with various banks to obtain funds for paying farmers as well as scheme's debts. She noted that some banks have agreed to lend but the PDMO does not want to make it public immediately for the fear of possible protests from their employees and customers.

Rice Returns to Sicily: A Local Chef Revives a Traditional Dish May 22, 2014
After being gone for almost a century, rice has returned to Sicily: last year, a local chef decided to return to cook a traditional Sicilian dish called arancini using all local ingredients, as it would have been prepared in ancient times.The chef asked a farm to resume cultivating the right rice variety, and he found a partner in a strong-willed young farmer named Angelo Manna, who began planting in Leonforte, not far from Ragusa. Before this time, only a small area of land was used to grow Arborio rice, the right kind for cooking arancini.The recipe consists of a risotto ball (made of Arborio rice), stuffed with minced meat or ham, peas and mozzarella, and then fried. The ball takes on an orange hue, giving it its name – arancini means “small oranges” in Italian – but it tastes nothing like an orange.It is delicious, though – and using local rice should improve the flavor even more. This hasn‟t been possible until last year, since no rice had been farmed in Sicily for almost 100 years. The disappearance of Sicily‟s rice cultivation might be surprising, especially since it was the gateway for rice to come to Italy and then Europe during medieval Arab domination. Later, rice was farmed in the marshes of Catanian plain and in the area of Ribera, but during the Fascist period the marshes were reclaimed and the zoning rights did not permit farming on it. Now, oranges are mostly grown in those marshes, where farmers were forced to abandon rice-growing as competition from rice farmers in the North of Italy increased.Now, the

its country brief on Madagascar.Paddy rice output in 2013 was severely affected with locust and bad weather. It declined by about 16% from about 4.3 million tons produced in 2012. Nearly one million hectares of rice land have been treated with chemical pesticides, bio pesticides and insect growth regulators as part of the government's anti-locust campaign, which began in 2013 and would continue till August 2014. Though the government's actions have prevented significant damage to paddy crop this year, the FAO expects damage in the densely infested areas. It says on the whole climatic conditions are likely to be favorable for paddy production during the current cropping season.The FAO expects Madagascar's rice imports to reach 2012 levels after they increased substantially in 2013 due to lower production. Madagascar imported 400,000 tons rice in 2013, twice of about 200,000 tons imported in 2012. Prices of imported and domestic rice have been falling since February 2014, after they increased significantly in 2013 due to reduced output. But increased imports stopped increase in prices by helping resume normal supplies in the country. The FAO says food security in the country was impacted significantly due to lower output of all cereals including rice, adding that nearly 4 million people were deprived of food last year. It expects situation to improve this year as food supplies from 2014 harvests begin reaching markets as well as falling prices. USDA estimates Madagascar paddy rice production to decline to about 3.6 million tons (2.3 million tons of milled rice) in MY 2013-14 (May 2013 - April 2014), down about 21% from about 4.6 million tons (2.9 million tons of milled rice) produced in MY 2012-13. As of today, old crop offers could still be found near $16.33 per cwt fob farm (about $360 per ton) for MayJune shipment although most sellers are hoping to net at least $16.66 per cwt fob farm (about $367 per ton).Bids from most larger mills increased slightly to around $15.10 per cwt (about $333 per ton) for May-June delivery while bids for exporters were unchanged near $16.00 per cwt (about $353 per ton), for the same delivery period, and again we heard reports today of rice trading around $16.10 per cwt for prompt delivery (about $355 per ton). In the meantime, today the USDA reported that cumulative net export sales for the week ending on May 15th, totaled 64,500 tons, which was considerably higher than last week and the prior 4-week average. Increases were reported for the following destinations including: 25,300 tons to Japan, 14,300 tons to Haiti, 10,500 tons to Mexico, 6,300 tons to El Salvador including 6,800 tons switched from unknown destinations and decreases of 500 tons, and 5,000 tons to Costa Rica while decreases of 7,400 tons were reported unknown destinations.

The Thailand military on Thursday took full control of the country. This is the second time in ten years that the army has deposed an elected government.While announcing the coup, the army described it as a necessary tool to seize power. The aim was to restore normalcy soon and reform the political structure, the economy and the society while terming it as the people staging the coup as the “The national peacekeeping committee.” The coup announcement was made after the Thai stock market was closed. The general guaranteed safety to foreign residents, diplomats and employees of international organisations. The military ordered all radio, TV and communication centre to broadcast content only with the approval of the military.Analysts say it is too early to predict the impact of the coup on the country‟s civilians, administration and imports/exports. The other grains finished the day mostly higher with only wheat continuing lower; soybeans closed about 0.9% higher at $15.1875 per bushel; wheat about 0.8% lower at $6.5925 per bushel, and corn finished the day about 0.5% higher at $4.7675 per bushel.U.S. stocks rose modestly on Thursday, extending the prior day's rally, as investors weighed varied economic reports a day after the Federal Reserve signaled interest rates would remain low for the foreseeable future. Thursday's data included the Markit Economics preliminary index of U.S. manufacturing, which rose to 56.2 this month from 55.4 in April. And, an initial purchasing managers' index in China climbed to a five-month high. Other reports had sales of previously owned homes rising in April for the first time in four months, and more Americans than estimated filing claims for jobless benefits last week. Philippines Prepares for El Niño; Encourages Climate-Resilient Rice Farming; Sets up ‘Climate Change Center’ to Mitigate Climate Risks May 22, 2014
With the impending El Niño phenomenon expected this summer potentially reducing rice paddy production across South and Southeast Asia, the Philippines Department of Agriculture‟s (DA) has mandated that all agencies under the DA to include climate change management in their activities as part of the Seven-Wide Programs on Climate Change (DA-SWPCC).Philippines Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) has set up a 'Climate Change Center' (CCC) to help rice farmers to effectively cope up with the adverse effects of climate changes, according to the government's official gazette. The Center comprises of agronomists, plant pathologists, engineers, social scientists, communication specialists and rice researchers who specialize in climate change studies. It will involve itself in understanding climate changes, assessing their impact on rice farming as well as recommending ways to mitigate their effects on the rice industry. The Center will devise strategies involving climate-resilient rice varieties, pest and nutrient management, decision support tools, water harvesting and conservation, diversified farming, area mapping and vulnerability studies. The CCC is planning to develop a highly-diversified rice farming system, which is capable of withstanding climate-related stresses and at the same time offer farmers alternative sources of food and livelihood, says the CCC Director. “Despite the odds in our current weather conditions, we want to reassure our farmers that PhilRice will always be sensitive to addressing their needs through our strengthened R&D efforts.
