Welcome to Penn! We hope this guide will help you navigate University City and its surrounding neighborhoods. There is much to explore here in Philadelphia, and this comprehensive guide will help you experience everything from music festivals to pop-up shops, happy hours to workout classes, and everything in between. We have included maps of both Penn’s campus and Center City Philadelphia to help orient yourself. There is also a section dedicated to getting around Philly, from biking to SEPTA. We hope this guide will help you have a fun and memorable summer at Penn!

Greetings:

This is a summer unlike any other. As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, Philadelphia, where independence was declared, stands at the center of that celebration. We are glad you are here to be a part of it.

Penn has long been woven into this moment. Founded in 1740, we predate the nation itself. Penn’s founder, Benjamin Franklin, helped draft the Declaration of Independence in this city, adding the enduring words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” To walk our campus and the cobble-stone streets of Old City is to move through history that is very much alive.

Today, the Penn community includes more than 29,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, along with nearly 70,000 faculty and staff (including our health system). Yet, what often strikes visitors most is the proximity of our urban campus. In just 10 minutes, you can walk from a Wharton classroom to the rising Platt Student Performing Arts Center, with a restorative pause at the Bio Pond to spot turtles basking in the sun. I encourage you to follow your curiosity and see where it leads you.

Philadelphia is a world-class city with extraordinary cultural offerings. The America 250 celebration features special exhibits, including The Declaration’s Journey at the Museum of the American Revolution and A Nation of Artists at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, alongside Penn’s own Institute for Contemporary Art, Arthur Ross Gallery, and the Penn Museum. The city is also hosting marquee sporting events, including the FIFA Men’s World Cup, MLB All-Star Game, and women’s professional tennis at Penn’s Hamlin Tennis Center.

Off the court, some of our city’s finest experiences happen at the table. Our food scene is inventive and rooted in community, from James Beard Award-winning restaurants to the food trucks on campus. More than a few great establishments are owned or operated by Penn alumni.

Philadelphia Cycling Classic

Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026

Begins at Logan Square, 200 N. 19th Street. The Philadelphia cycling classic is finally back after a decade to celebrate America’s 250th!

This 14.4-mile course will take riders to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway through Lemon Hill and up the “Manayunk Wall.” They will have both men’s and women’s races for you to join or support from the sidelines.

Major League Baseball All-Star Game and AllStar Week

July 10-14, 2026

The 96th annual major league baseball all-star game will be at Citizens Bank Park. Before the game on July 14, there will be a range of star week activities such as the home run derby, allstar softball, MLB draft, and more.

ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking

Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll

The Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll is a biannual street festival where visitors can enjoy $1, $3, and $5 deals, live music, and arts and crafts. University City Dining Days returns July 16th through July 26th, where diners can enjoy

Campus Safety

Blue Light Phones

The Division of Public Safety has phones for emergency use across campus. Phones can be found on the street, on buildings, or inside parking garages. The phones can be distinguished by their yellow covers and overhead blue lights.

Walking Escort and Ride

To request a walking escort, students can call (215) 898-WALK (9255), or ask any on-duty DPS officer on patrol or inside a building for help. You can request a walking escort 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for an escort within the territory, spanning from 30th to 43rd streets and from Market Street to Baltimore Avenue.

Dial (215) 898-RIDE (7433) to request a ride to or from locations on or off campus via a University van from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. When you call for a ride, be sure to provide the dispatcher with your name, exact location, and destination. You can expect your ride to arrive within 20 minutes.

Penn Police Station

Visit the Penn Police Station at 4040 Chestnut St. in case of an emergency, if you need help, or if you have questions. They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Dueling Tampons”

The large red statue located at 38th Street and Locust Walk that students lovingly refer to as “The Tampons.” This statue is “Covenant” by Alexander Liberman.

Van Pelt-Dietrich Library

The most common place where Penn students congregate to stress — or slack off — on work.

The Split Button

The large button sculpture located in front of Van Pelt on Locust Walk. The artists, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, were inspired by the idea that the button came from the Benjamin Franklin statue across Locust.

The Compass

A popular meeting spot on campus at 37th Street and Locust Walk. Rumor has it that if

you step on the middle of the compass at the beginning of the semester, you’ll fail your first midterm.

David Rittenhouse Laboratory

DRL is located at 33rd and Walnut streets. It slightly resembles a high school building.

LOVE Sculpture

A replication of Robert Indiana’s famous original piece. You’ll find it near The Split Button at 36th Street and Locust Walk.

Penn’s three high-rise dorms

Colloquially known as “The High Rises,” this term refers to the upperclassmen dorms: Harnwell, Harrison, and Rodin College Houses. They all boast breathtaking views of the city and Locust Walk, and they are conveniently located near many restaurants.

Class of 1949 Generational Bridge

This bridge connects the two parts of campus separated by University Avenue. It serves as a daily workout routine for upperclassmen, and during the winter, you might have to battle strong winds to get over it.
