I say this all to emphasize that the DP is not only a place where stories are told, but also a place where leaders are made, friendships forged, and passions pursued.
”
When I had joined The Daily Pennsylvanian in the fall of my freshman year, I never expected the organization to take such a profound role in my college experience From late nights working on the print product to covering national news, the DP has been the most defining part of my time at Penn.
Let me formally introduce myself: my name is Abhiram Juvvadi, I am a current junior at Penn and the President of The Daily Pennsylvanian I look forward to leading the DP into its 141st year, helping ensure the execution of hard-hitting journalism while maintaining the organization’s pivotal role on campus and in the community
Over the course of the past year, Penn (and the DP’s coverage) has made the national spotlight: our coverage of student activism and changes in the Penn administration was read by millions of people Our student journalists had their work cited in major publications, and as the former Photo Editor, I am extremely proud to see images captured by the DP’s photographers seen across the country
In the confines of the Pink Palace, the DP is frequently referred to as a “learning institution ” It is just that and more I’ve personally met many of my closest friends through the DP, learned skills that extend beyond journalism, and recognized the importance of teamwork and collaboration. I say this all to emphasize that the DP is not only a place where stories are told, but also a place where leaders are made, friendships forged, and passions pursued
Heading into this year, the DP will undergo changes designed to improve the reader and staff experience. We are currently working on a website redesign for all of our publications readers can soon expect to see a modernized interface for the DP, 34th Street Magazine, and Under the Button Our work on the DP Foundation has also advanced, bringing the organization closer in establishing our permanent office at 3721 Chestnut Street The business department has revamped its existing structure, laying the foundation for innovative ventures designed to move the DP into the future
All of these initiatives would not be possible without the support of our readers, alumni, and community members Your continued support to the DP is encouraging, driving us to push the boundaries of high-quality journalism As I begin my term, I am deeply honored to lead such an important institution into the future The Daily Pennsylvanian has been at the cornerstone of the Penn community for over a century, and it is with a sense of excitement that I look forward to leading it into its 141st year Here’s to fearless journalism, boundless creativity, and lasting impact!
This year, we aim to have more get-togethers like our reception at the Penn Club in New York and our National Press Club event in Washington. Alums in other cities can join the action. Thanks to all who’ve participated and the many more who will come together in 2025.
We’re coming off an exciting and enjoyable period for DP alums
Thanks to all who joined our celebration of the DP’s 140th anniversary last November – headed by record numbers from the 1970s and ’80s It kicked off with a fun and lively Friday night reception at Smokey Joe’s, continued through a series of terrific panel discussions and our Hall of Fame ceremony on Saturday afternoon, and ended with a gala at the new WXPN hall on 30th Street There was also a group visit to the DP’s future home on Chestnut Street
Then came a record turnout of both alums and students for our annual boot camp on January 18 Alumni with expertise in every corner of the DP – more than a dozen specialties in all – clustered with students in Huntsman Hall for person-to-person teaching and bonding
It was gratifying to see so many recent alums return to the fold There’s a special kind of mentorship that only young alums can provide: A direct link to the issues that animate the campus of this era This connection takes on extra importance in the light of the digital changeover With no more late nights in the comp room, skills that used to get passed from student to student have been harder to teach Meanwhile, the process of creating new digital initiatives exceeds the tenure of any one board of managers. Keeping young alums involved with staff members helps our training and expands our institutional memory chip.
This year, we aim to have more get-togethers like our reception at the Penn Club in New York and our National Press Club event in Washington. Alums in other cities can join the action. Thanks to all who’ve participated and the many more who will come together in 2025.
16TH - APRIL 7TH
Happy New Year! For those who don’t know me, my name is Diamy Wang As The Daily Pennsylvanian enters its 141st year, I’m excited to lead our editorial operations as Executive Editor.
2024 was a whirlwind year for the DP Our student journalists across the DP, 34th Street, and Under the Button have gone above and beyond to dedicate themselves to sharing the stories that matter to the Penn community. Coming off of former Penn President Liz Magill’s resignation, the action never stopped we led national outlets in our coverage of Penn’s Gaza Solidarity Encampment, held Penn’s administration, athletics programs, and student leaders alike accountable for their lack of transparency, and broke news (and even went viral!) about Penn alumnus Luigi Mangione in untraditional ways.
In the year ahead, I look forward to training our new editors and staffers to produce highquality content, with a strong emphasis on standards and ethics This started with our incredibly successful DP alumni training session several weeks ago, where DP alumni and other industry professionals graciously offered their time and expertise to students across all publications and departments
Fresh new websites launching for all of our publications will soon provide an even better platform for our journalists’ work to shine, as the 141st Board refocuses its priorities under new leadership The DP will continue to be Penn’s authoritative voice for factual, accurate news especially as we look forward to the search for a new University president Street is launching a new newsletter highlighting campus arts and culture under a name that may be familiar to some of you: Street Sweeper UTB will be reinvigorating its focus on timely satire based on current events And our cross-publication departments Copy, Design, Multimedia, Puzzles, and Social Media are always making our content the best it can be, and always looking for innovative ways to tell the stories that matter.
None of this work would be possible without the generous support from our alumni and our readers at large Throughout my time at the DP, I’ve had the privilege to interact with and receive guidance from many alumni ranging from those who just graduated several years ago to those who have been working in the journalism industry for decades This year, I know for a fact that your continued support will be felt in every corner of the newsroom from the dinners we have on production nights to the casual conversations we have with alumni at Marquez.
As we start off the new year and the new board, it’s my honor to be a part of an organization with such a storied history in the Penn community I can’t wait to see what the DP holds in its 141st year undoubtedly, lasting impact and plenty of quality journalism!
r the DP was an experience that pushed me to , I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved as way
balancing budgets or preparing reports; it was lti-million-dollar organization while working ve individuals I’ve ever met From overseeing with other departments on major projects, I mpacts the bigger picture of the DP’s success.
e the value of collaboration and adaptability orming solutions with my fellow managers, I n we came together as a team.
ager, I’m excited to build on this foundation y vision is to prioritize innovation, revenue uring that business continues to be a vital rward to leading initiatives that empower our n, and position the DP for long-term success can’t wait to see what we accomplish together
I am extremely excited to take on the mantle of 34th Street Magazine's Editor-in-Chief this year. Over the last year, Street has worked tirelessly to produce journalistic content to inspire questions and cultivate campus culture Features Editors Jules Lingenfelter and Hannah Sung (now respectively Print Managing Editor and Digital Managing Editor) published an investigative feature on the AAUP’s fight for free speech in the face of donor involvement that won the English Department’s journalism award. In October, we published a dining guide entitled “Home is Where the Hearth Is” centered on highlighting the diverse community of Philly’s food scene Beyond just our print product, we entirely redesigned our digital footprint, from our website to X In fact, our coverage of Luigi Mangione on X reached 5 million people and was even cited in The Cut
Street has been my home since my freshman fall, a place to write about the ideas that excite me and build a community of life-long friendships that extend far beyond the Stroffice
One of the most important fixtures of the Street community are our prod nights Four times a month, we gather in the Pink Palace, share food, and put together our print magazine Last year, we opened production night to writers as well, so that they could meet with their editors in a shared space and engage with the larger Street community Plenty of editors have shared with me that our expanded production nights have created a sense of real community in Street. With everyone in the same room, we ’ re constantly throwing out new ideas as we work, a fertile breeding ground for some of our best pieces Your contribution can directly help us fund snacks and food for our production nights, keeping the Street community strong
One of my goals as Editor-in-Chief of Street is to cement our place as a fixture of art and culture on campus through events that enhance our editorial product Over the past year, we ’ ve begun hosting launch events in tandem with our monthly magazine People on campus still talk about the “tiny desk concert” we hosted with Penn student bands at Smoke's last April after we published a feature on rock band culture on campus This year, our goal is to host a launch event with each monthly issue, increasing our presence and bringing our editorial content off the page
I deeply believe that magazine journalism helps create communities Street is committed to bringing together both our writers and the broader arts scene on campus Thank you, for being a part of our community and I’m so excited for what we can do together.
My fellow Pennsylvanians:
It’s been a while since you ’ ve left, and we miss you misinformation has only grown, fueled by the unchecke we trust to connect us are dividing us, distorting the trut of our democratic process. Nevertheless, we persevere propagating misinformation across Penn’s campus; fr Jameson’s office, not a single square inch is safe from reporters
To those of you who don’t know us, we are Under the Bu publication Unchecked by the limitations of truth, we co happen (And before the DP! We broke the Luigi Mangio pencil-pushers could even press “submit.”) To those of yo We’ve done a lot without you We’ve built out our annu riotous laughter, starting out with a death-defying stu costumes and wrestling on video, destroying our empl successful standup comedy night at Smoke’s. Our writers has taken a hit ever since we started chaining them to M department has consistently documented all facets of nearly doubled in size over the past two years We’ve e reflect our outsized influence on campus culture, and w source of news by 2037
Going forward, we will continue to make people laugh is to foster discussion by highlighting all the quotidian ab going to happen tomorrow? We can’t wait to decide
For the past two years as a DP Sports reporter, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the power of sports and the compelling stories of the athletes who inspire us It has been an honor to cover the remarkable accomplishments of Penn athletes, from AllAmerican runners like Bella Whitaker and Dylan Throop to U S Olympian Matt Fallon. Spotlighting the latter’s successes and having the opportunity to lead the coverage on his journey to Olympic glory has been one of the most rewarding parts of my experience
Beyond highlighting the triumphs of Penn athletics, what has truly made my time with DP Sports special is the energetic and supportive community within the department (also known as DPOSTM the Daily Pennsylvanian’s Only Section That Matters) Weekly meetings are more than pitch meetings. They’re a fun bonding opportunity as every meeting ends with friendly but competitive quiz games on the week’s biggest sports stories Traveling together to away football and basketball games has solidified not only professional collaboration but also meaningful friendships. The camaraderie and shared passion for storytelling have made DPOSTM a second family to me
As I step into the role of Sports Editor this year, I’m excited to continue upholding the high standards and exceptional coverage that have defined our section I also aim to further cultivate the amazing community that the section has one that celebrates not only the athletes we spotlight but also the hard work of our talented staffers
Here’s to another year of storytelling and memorable moments! Go DP Sports!
My past two years at the DP have taught me three important lessons: the power of storytelling, the impact of community, and the value of sustained commitment As the Advancement Manager at The Daily Pennsylvanian Foundation, I want to ensure that the stories we tell about students, about journalism, and about the values that define our work are supported and heard for years to come
Every day, I’m inspired by the dedication of our team and the passion of our alumni Together, we ’ re not just raising funds; we ’ re building a legacy What does that legacy look like? It looks like playing a pivotal role in uncovering the University's response to antisemitism, sparking public discourse, and driving institutional reflection and change It looks like serving as the unofficial school of journalism for Penn and mentoring young journalists who go on to major news outlets It looks like celebrating the DP’s achievements, such as winning The ACP Newspaper Pacemaker Award, recognizing the best student media for the past year This legacy is one of truth, impact, and transformation
This year, the DP received over 600 gifts from 450 donors As we ' ve seen alumni come together to compete in Masthead Madness or give the gift of truth on Giving Tuesday, we ' re incredibly grateful for your continued support in preserving independent journalism at Penn Events like the 140th Anniversary Weekend, along with our gatherings in New York City and Washington, D C , have strengthened connections and created a real sense of community.
Your involvement isn’t just a contribution; it’s a belief in the future of journalism
BAY Advancement Manager, DP Foundation
DP Advances is our annual giving campaign, where you are encouraged to make a recurring donation to support the daily operation of a publication that the Penn community relies on every year. You are empowering the next generation of student journalists to produce hard-hitting, impactful coverage. Your donation ensures The Daily Pennsylvanian continues to be a powerful, independent voice on campus and beyond.
Executive Director, DP Foundation
Every day, students at The Daily Pennsylvanian dedicate themselves to the critical work of journalism; pursuing stories, meeting deadlines, asking the tough questions, and holding our community accountable They do this not only because they believe in the power of a free press, but because they recognize the responsibility that comes with it The DP is an institution that shapes future journalists, entrepreneurs, and innovators It is where young voices are strengthened, where impactful stories come to life, and where careers and lifelong connections are forged
This work is rigorous, demanding, and vital But passion alone is not enough That’s why annual giving is so essential Every contribution fuels the DP’s mission, ensuring that student journalists have the tools, resources, and support they need to thrive in an evolving media landscape Your generosity sustains print journalism, advances digital innovation, and equips students with the skills to lead in the industries of tomorrow
As we look to the year ahead, we invite you to stand with us in supporting this extraordinary institution If the DP played a role in your journey, consider making a gift Every dollar strengthens student journalism, fortifies this legacy, and affirms to today’s students that: What you do matters, and we believe in you
A strong DP means a strong voice for students, a stronger Penn, and a stronger future for journalism. Together, we can ensure that the next generation continues to have the opportunities, experiences, and mentorship that make The Daily Pennsylvanian an unparalleled organization
Give today Give every year Let’s make sure the DP remains a force at Penn, for this generation and the next
The DP Futures Capital Campaign is our initiative to ensure The Daily Pennsylvanian thrives for generations to come. Your support will help create a modern, innovative newsroom at 3721 Chestnut, where the next generation of reporters, editors, and media creators will hone their craft. We are working to raise $4 million by the end of 2027, and your donation will directly support this vital effort. DPFutures.com
