IONS Club International has donated relief supplies worth K200, 000 to Chembe Constituency in Luapula Province which suffered flooding due to heavy rains. This gesture was coordinated by Chembe Member of Parliament Sebastian Kopulande who is also a member of the Lions Club. Lion Sanjay Balid, Governor of Lions District 413 accompanied by a high-powered delegation from the District, handed over the supplies yesterday. The donated items included mealie meal, cooking oil, blankets,
chlorine and mosquito nets all valued at approximately K200, 000. Mr Kopulande thanked the Lions Club International for coming to the rescue of Chembe residents. Mr Kopulande was joined by Luapula Province Minister Nickson Chilangwa in flagging off the distribution of the donation. DONATION

MATERO Member of Parliament Lloyd Kaziya has pleaded with politicians not to politicise activities of Matero Stadium but to join forces to improve its facilities. Speaking when he donated jerseys and several balls to Lusaka Tigers Football Club at Matero stadium yesterday, Kaziya said politicians should avoid fights that will not bring development at the facility. Kaziya, who is the club’s patron said he was engaging a number of potential developers who can change the face of the stadium. “I wish to make an earnest appeal to my colleagues in the political area that we should not politicise the activities of Matero Stadium. We should not engage in fights that are not going to help Matero. Matero belongs to all of us, no one owns it. Indonesia minister slammed for ‘virus is like your wife’ remarks JAKARTA - An Indonesian minister is under fire after he compared coronavirus to rebellious wives, in remarks aimed at soothing public fears about easing Covid-19 restrictions across the Southeast Asian archipelago. Women’s groups and social media users slammed the apparent joke by security minister Mohammad Mahfud MD, who made the comments during an online address to a local university last week. “Are we going to be holed up forever? We can adjust to the situation while still paying attention to our health,” the minister said on Tuesday. “The other day I got a meme from my colleague… that says: Corona is like your wife. Initially you tried to control it, then you realise that you can’t. Then you learn to live with it.” Critics panned the remarks as sexist and said it underscored the country’s weak response to the virus outbreak. “This statement not only reflects the superficial power of the government to solve the Covid-19 pandemic problem, but also shows the sexist and misogynistic mindset of public officials,” Women’s Solidarity group chief executive Dinda Nisa Yura said in a statement. Mahfud’s office did not respond to a request for comment on Friday. Indonesia is deploying some 340, 000 troops to clamp down on rampant social distancing violations as coronavirus infections surge in the world’s fourth-most populous country. The move comes as the government eyes a reopening of shuttered businesses next week, fearing a collapse in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. Indonesia has confirmed around 24, 000 cases of Covid-19 and 1, 496 deaths, but the country of more than 260 million has some of the lowest testing rates in the world. PASTOR WHO LAID HANDS ON COVID-19 PATIENTS DIESOF VIRUS DOUALA - A Pastor, Frankline Ndifor, 39, who laid his hands on dozens of confirmed and suspected coronavirus sufferers is dead, according to Dailymail.co.uk Dr Gaelle Nnanga, who was called to treat Ndifor after he started suffering severe respiratory difficulties a week after falling ill with the virus, said the
pastor died ten minutes after treatment. Ndifor, a candidate in Cameroon’s presidential election in 2018, claimed to cure Covid-19. In previous weeks, sufferers had flocked to the Kingship International Ministries Church, founded by Ndifor, where he laid his hands on them and prayed for their healing.
His supporters called him a “prophet” and blocked the entrance to his home in the capital city of Douala for eight hours as medical workers tried to retrieve Ndifor’s body on Saturday morning. The Governor of the coastal region said a police force had to be deployed when supporters blocked the entrance to his home
and claimed the pastor was on a spiritual retreat with God so he could not be buried. They sang and prayed for his resurrection throughout the weekend. He was buried in front of the house on the day of his death. Dozens of people knelt down on the ground outside Ndifor’s house in
118 escape from isolation centres HARARE - A total of 118 people have so far escaped from Covid-19 quarantine and isolation centres countrywide in separate incidents while police have arrested 41, 738 people for violating lockdown regulations and the Liquor Act. Some of the escapees have however, since been arrested. In a statement yesterday, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they were concerned with the high number of returnees who were escaping from isolation centres as they were putting the lives of other people in danger. He urged the public to be cautious before accepting any returnees and ensure that they had gone through the Covid-19 vetting process, which was being coordinated by the Ministry of Health and Child Care. Recently, 19 people escaped from quarantine at the National Social Security Authority Hotel in Beitbridge, with five others absconding mandatory quarantine at Rupangwana Isolation Centre in Chiredzi.
Police had since set up numerous checkpoints and roadblocks across the country and introduced patrols targeting people and motorists breaching the lockdown rules. On Sunday alone, 1, 219 people were arrested in separate incidents countrywide and most of those arrested were in violation of movement restrictions. Fourteen were arrested for liquor-related offences, 43 under the Road Traffic Act, 68 for opening businesses without exemption letters, 754 for unnecessary
movements, 15 for gathering, 274 for failing to wear masks and 61 for violating the Miscellaneous Offences Act. Some of the offenders were fined amounts ranging between $200 and $500, while others are expected to appear in court soon. Government recently gazetted a law compelling all people to wear face masks in public. Those who fail to wear face masks are liable to a $500 fine or imprisonment of up to one year. – THE HERALD.

Swindling investor lands man behind bars HARARE - A Bindura man, who swindled a Singaporean investor Ramason Bupendra of mining machinery worth US$500, 000, has been sentenced to an effective seven years in prison. Fradreck Utsiwegota (38) pleaded not guilty to theft of trust property charges. However, he was convicted after a full trial. Provincial magistrate Tinashe Ndokera sentenced Utsiwegota to 10 years in prison before suspending three years on condition that in the next five years he does not commit a similar offence. The court heard that on July 5, 2012 Utsiwegota and Bupendra registered Decade Mining (Pvt) Limited and both became directors. Bupendra was the sole financier in the company and 51 percent shares were awarded to Utsiwegota to comply with the Indigenisation law. In July 2013, Bupendra left the country for Singapore and left Utsiwegota in charge of the company’s assets and day-to-day running of the business. Utsiwegota advised him against coming back saying the political situation was not suitable for foreigners. He was entrusted with two by three stamp mills each valued at US$36, 000, one five stamp mill valued at US$45, 000, one 120kva generator valued at US$25, 000 and a Toyota Hilux single cab valued at US$35, 000. Among the property was a Mazda 3 valued at US$9, 000, two ABJ concentrators valued at US$7 000, one Foton (7 tonne) truck valued at US$58, 000, eight electric motors each valued at US$2, 500 and an amalgam barrel valued at US$6, 000.

DONAVAN Kanyembo musically known as Ice Box is a 29-year-old Zambian artiste who was born in Ndola, on the Copperbelt. Son to late Bowas Kanyembo and Betty Namukoko Kanyembo, Donavan is a the fourth child who picked on music as his career path. Growing up in a community where a career in music was the least favoured, Ice Box who is also known by the nickname Dova first came on the scene in 2015 with his first track titled ‘Supra on My Fit’ produced by Jolly B. Ice Box’s greatest fear growing up was having the lowest grades at school. This enabled him to work hard while at Kalulushi Trust School in Kalulushi, with his favorite subject

N the past month at least three Zambians have been jailed for 5 years for illegal possession of ivory. On 7 May 2020, the Subordinate Court in Siavonga handed a five-year prison sentence to George Elijah (51), and Enock Mwiinga (30), who were arrested for illegal possession of 23 kilograms of elephant ivory. On 19 May 2020, the Subordinate Court in Mpika handed the same sentence to Sydney Musonda (26), who was caught with 2 kilograms of ivory. Stories of Zambians being arrested for illegal possession of ivory, like the ones above, are becoming common, and on face value, one may even question whether these cases, which often involve small quantities of ivory, are harmful. But when you consider that the seemingly isolated cases are actually not isolated, that they are controlled by the same serious, organised, transnational criminal syndicates which hire low level poachers from different parts of the country to do their bidding for very little return, the outlook changes. When you add up the “small” quantities of ivory collected from, hundreds of local poachers, over months, years, you end up with a multi-billion dollar illegal business that mainly enriches a handful of transnational organized criminal networks, who cash in on the black-market demand

The report also states that a six tonne (6,000kg) ivory consignment that shipped from Zambia was seized in the Philippines
in late 2005. There have also been some large seizures that have occurred within Zambia. In 2017, law enforcement officers seized 384 kilograms of ivory from eight traffickers in western Zambia, as they were trying to whisk it out of the country through Namibia. These seizures clearly point to organised crime. I was born in Kitwe on the 3rd of February from Barnabas Clement Mukuka Lubusha, a Bemba from Chinsali, Kasama and Olivie Misozi Lubusha a Ngoni/Chewa from Chief Mshawa and Chief Chanje of Chipangali District. I am the last born in a family of five, the first born is a lady and the rest are male though we lost our third born brother. I started school in 1990 at Rokana Primary School then went to Kitwe Boys Technical School. Whilst in Grade 11, I moved to Chama High School where I completed from. They say education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. I enrolled at Popota Tobacco Training College to pursue Agriculture training then later studied Public Administration at the University of Zambia and did my Master of Business Administration with the University of Manchester. I am currently doing my dissertation in the same program. It is said that if you want something out of life you have to go out there and get it, because it is not just going to be given to you and Aushton Kutcher said ‘don’t settle for what life gives you but make life better and build something’. I am married to Ezzy Bili and we are blessed with two daughters and two sons. My first born is Misozi who is 16 years old and is currently at Chengelo International School in grade 12. Balancing between family and politics has been a bit challenging but interesting. When you become a politician, family to some extent loses and the public gains for a leader must always find time to solve challenges of his people and you know these challenges never end. However, God has been so faithful to help with wisdom and a big heart to manage family, business and politics. YOUR FUTURE GOAL IN POLITICS AND MESSAGE TO THE YOUTHS? My goal is to see a better Zambia than the Zambia I found before I joined politics. Zambia is already sitting on a fertile land for more development and I want to be part of that solution for a better and prosperous Zambia. Many times we are caught up in an unseemly situations, we usually look for the easy way out. CHANGING KALULUSHI'S STATUS QUO By TERENCE MISELO

ALULUSHI town situated on the Copperbelt Province of Zambia was founded in 1953 as a residence for Chibuluma copper and cobalt miners. Officially proclaimed as a town in 1958, Kalulushi was initially highly dependent on economic activities around mining. Of late, the town, with one Constituency and 22 wards, has undergone various changes including economic diversification that is set to spark development. This is one aspect that current area Member of Parliament (MP) and Minister of Community Development, under the Patriotic Front (PF) Hon. Kampamba Mulenga Chewe is pleased with. The MP, who was elected in 2016 is happy with developmental projects in her reign. To reach this far, her first goal was to change the people’s thinking of mining as the only economic motive. “My call was to change the mindset, the status quo from the thought that if you were born from Kalulushi you have to be a miner,” she said. This she admits was difficult but she is delighted that currently, Kalulushi is growing economically, owing to the diverse approach she has adopted. Hon. Mulenga was speaking during an exclusive interview organised by the Zambia Women Parliamentary Caucus (ZWPC) after a tour of her Constituency. The Caucus, supported by Hivos is visiting women-led constituencies across Zambia with a view to profiling and highlighting developmental projects implemented by the female MPs. For Hon. Mulenga, most of the projects she has initiated have been with a need to diversify Kalulushi’s economy. They have been centered on community empowerment, agriculture and infrastructure development. Under community empowerment for instance, women, youth, the vulnerable and different other groups have benefited. “For me I put it a point to say I was not helping by giving handouts. I had to think of what they would remember me with, after I am gone as MP. I therefore asked them to form groups to uplift their lives,”she said, naming Ichimpe Ward, as one area where her empowerment has led to commercial faming. “My office has partnered with Kalumbila Multipurpose Cooperative under the Kalulushi 5,000 empowerment project. The target of this programme is to empower 5,000 families in rearing of local chickens, gardening and rearing of pigs,” she said. Currently there are about 5 hectares of tomatoes and another three hectares of vegetables in Ichimpe ward
which is one of the farming blocks. Empowerment has also promoted fish farming in Kalulushi. Chola Masenga, a fish farmer in Remmy Chisupa Ward, is a direct beneficiary of this. In 2019, he and 20 other farmers received support of fingerlings and feed to enhance fish farming. Masenga is now supplying fish to the community and also helping startups. Hon. Mulenga has used empowerment to respond to the high levels of unemployment. In certain areas, using the Enhance Small Holder Livestock Investment Programme (E-SLIP) under the fisheries and livestock ministry, residents have received dairy and beef animals, goats and village chickens to support livestock farming. The MP has also given out hammer mills, and oil expellers for the production of cooking oil and peanut butter for sale and home use.

Working with women and other community groups has been possible because of a tracking and monitoring team she calls ‘ District Cooperative Team’. With this team, she keeps track of projects and empowerment programmes. The empowerment projects have seen her use personal resources sometimes to support residents. For example, more than 50 groups have received start-up capital in village banking, block making, poultry and agriculture. Agriculture has specifically won Kalulushi Constituency recognition at the annual Copperbelt Agriculture and Commercial Show, a thing she speaks highly of. Her successes are also very visible under education. Here, she has extended the empowerment programme by lobbying and sourcing for bursary schemes. “ I embarked on a mission to ensure that every child that had qualifications to go to college or university was given an equal opportunity to get into university through the bursary

Another area of her projects in Kalulushi has been water supply and drilling of bore holes. She actually says most classroom blocks were constructed alongside the drilling of bore holes. “We made it a point that we wont just construct schools but we will give them water,” she explained. To further emphasize on the water provision, the MP has another project of drilling 85 bore holes across the constituency in partnership with Direct Aid from Kuwait. In infrastructure development, the MP targeted constructions of bridges at Mwambashi River and Sitwe Stream to ease trade. Mwambashi is now linked to Kalulushi Central after the bridge was built and residents are trading successfully. Under the health sector, a staff house to accommodate a resident doctor was completed at Chibuluma Clinic. Initially, the MP says, the clinic did not have a doctor because of lack of accommodation. On the project, Hon. Mulenga worked with NFCA who also aided the construction of a modern and bigger clinic at Chibote to meet a higher population in the area. The MP lobbied for this project when she saw that the older clinic could not address various health needs like, ART, Screening, maternity and child health care.

Further under health, Hon. Mulenga facilitated the refurbishment of Kalulushi Town Clinic and the introduction of a General Hospital. She says Kalulushi Town Clinic used to get flooded every time it rained and exposed patients to more risks and diseases. For the General Hospital, she shares how she lobbied for it from Chibuluma Mines even before she became MP. She said the hospital was initially dilapidated but she championed for
its refurbishment to a modern standard, with a male ward that was originally absent. She is now looking at expanding the General Hospital which also serves Lufwanyama residents. Hon. Mulenga has continued to partner with corporate entities in several other projects in different sectors. Amongst those she considers huge successes, is the purchase of 625 houses for the vulnerable across the constituency supported by NFCA. These houses were purchased for retirees that worked under ZAFFICO. Her effort was to promote Home Ownership. Another success is the construction of individual toilets in Chambeshi in a settlement called GR that was sponsored by Chambeshi Copper Smelter (CCS). Hon. Mulenga was concerned that this community was using an old and dilapidated communal toilet. The Hon. MP working with CCS has also taken a further step to improve sports and youth recreation through refurbishment of tennis and volleyball courts. This interest in sports is to help youths stay away from vices and maintain the culture of recreation facilities that existed way back. These corporate partnerships have eased Hon. Mulengas resource mobilisaiton. She is highly indebted to Chambish Metals, NFCA, CCS, The Republican President and other wellwishers for supporting her. “The President gave us a Macopolo bus as a gift for Chati Boarding School,” she happily said. It is also true to state that some of the projects especially those under empowerment are funded through her personal and family resources. This is because she believes in giving and sharing. For this reason, she has built a mutual relationship between her office and the Church which has also become a beneficiary to her empowerment programmes. Like any other MP, Hon. Mulenga has also used the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) for some projects mentioned. Being the only female lawmaker among all the 22 MPs from the Copperbelt, she urges women to support one another to increase their participation in politics. “If we (women) are going to be heard, we need more voices to come up and speak out,” she advises. Hon. Mulenga studied BBA, but desires to one day work in a hospital as her ultimate service to the people, away from politics. For now, her preoccupation is to change Kalulushi’s status quo through diversifying the economy.
