FTER almost three months of no football action, Government has indicated it is considering an urgent resumption of the Zambian league. The Zambian league which was suspended on March 20 due to coronavirus may resume next month, Sports Minister Emmanuel Mulenga said yesterday. Mulenga said in an interview Government had heard the calls by FAZ and fans on the need to restart football activities in readiness for the international calender. He said his office was equally eager to see the league back to
action after listening to the valid reasons given by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) during a meeting last Friday. "I should assure the football fraternity that Government has heard the plight of soccer fans on the need to restart football activities. We are on top of things. We are considering the restart of the league having listened to the valid points given by FAZ in a meeting we had on Friday," Mulenga said. He said the ministries of Sports, Health and FAZ officials met to discuss modalities to be put in place to ensure health guidelines in the fight against the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic is adhered to. Mulenga said FAZ president Andrew Kamanga had emphasised the need to urgently restart
the league as it had a bearing on the international calender. "We expect a full report to be ready on Monday after which I will sit together with the Minister of Health and other ministers to consider the league resumption," "We understand that players or clubs will have to be given twothree weeks of training to allow them regain their fitness levels. We shall make sure that we put the safety and health of players first even as we make the final decision," Mulenga said. Midlands cricketers cry for help By MICHAEL MIYOBA THE Midlands Cricket Association (MCA) has called on government to resolve the wrangles experienced in the last four years for Zambia to avoid being banned by the International Cricket Council. In 2017, the National Sports Council of Zambia (NCSZ) suspended the Zambia Cricket Union (ZCU) executive for alleged misappropriation of funds, a move which compelled the executive to take the matter to court. In July last year, The International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended ZCU for persistent non-compliance with the criteria of ICC Membership. ICC gave Zambia up to end of July this year to resolve their problems or risk being banned. MCA chairman Musa Patel said players have suffered because they are not able to represent the country at the highest level due to the suspension from ICC.
Patel Said there is need for the wrangles which have rocked the cricket federation to be dealt with before next month to avoid another ban which may derail further the development of cricket as a sport in Zambia. "We have suffered a lot. Please look at our case and guide on the way forward. "We have been sanctioned as a country because of misuse of funds and now players are losing out on opportunities to represents the country at the highest level," Patel said. Meanwhile, Minister of Sports Youth and Child Development Emmanuel Mulenga has promised to resolve the case as soon as possible. Mulenga said the new National Sports Council of Zambia board led by Patrick Mutimushi will sit down to look at the case. He reminded federations to stick to their respective constitutions to avoid wrangles which derail the development of sport. "What I have discovered is that many federations do not stick to their respective constitutions. If associations can stick to their constitutions, it would help us a lot," Mulenga said.

Charles Mwanza is Sports Council vice chairperson By GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA FORMER Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) president Charles Mwanza is the new National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) vicechairperson. Mwanza polled 38 votes to beat his only contender Zambia Swimming Union (ZGU) secretary Nicola Phiri who got 21 votes at the NSCZ elective general meeting held at Government Complex in Lusaka yesterday. Mwanza has over 20 years experience in sports administration having served in the ZGU executive committee and also as Indeni Football Club chairperson for 10 years. He will deputise the NSCZ chairperson Patrick Mutimushi. Mwanza described the race as tough but said his interaction with federations and experience earned him the votes. “It was not an easy race, Phiri was equally a tough contender. But I was confident of winning because of my strong interaction with people at the grassroots and also my contribution to sports in the last 20 years spoke on my
behalf. With the support of other board members, it’s the start of sport development,” he said. Despite Phiri failing to get the vice-chairperson seat, the other two women candidates scooped the board member positions out of the 384 votes casted. Zambia Volleyball Association president Nakaonga Kakoma and Zambia Deaf Association national coordinator Mwilima Phiri amassed 53 votes each. Others elected to the board are outspoken Handball Association of Zambia general secretary Josab Changa (42 votes), Badminton of Zambia president Kamatuwa Chirwa (41), Zambia Judo Association general secretary Mabvuto Ng’uni (42), Musunka Silungwe (50) and Harrison Sinkala (37). Losing candidates included Chabi Chondoka (14) and Desiderious Chapwa who got 20 votes. Returning officer Mwape Nshimbi declared the elections free and fair with no spoilt ballot. The election of the eight completed the NSCZ board which constitutes 13 members. Musician’s fans cause rampus NAIROBI – The mother of a popular Kenyan musician Benny Jachiga was yesterday forced to sit on the grave of her late son after irate fans made attempts to exhume the Ohangla singer’s body in protest over the artist’s hurried burial at 02:30 hours. According to a video doing rounds on social media, Monica Auma and Jachiga’s widow, Belinda Aluoch, sat on the singer’s grave in Kolwa East, Kisumu County to stop frenzied mourners from exhuming his body. The singer, real name Bernard Onyango Obonyo, famed for Kasinde and Usidharau Mwenzio hits among other songs was laid to rest secretly at his Chiga home under the watchful eye of police officers. The deceased’s brother, Austin Omondi, was the only member of the family allowed to witness the burial that came several hours after locals engaged police officers escorting the hearse in running battles. According to locals, the popular singer had not been accorded proper respect neither had the family nor community given enough time to grieve. “He was buried under tight security with police who were in plain clothes and some bouncers at 02:30 hours,” a source told Standard Digital. Pelted with stones and overpowered by the surging and relentless crowd that succeeded in refilling the grave and stopping any attempts to lay Jachiga to rest, the officers retreated into the night. “They have dispersed us. They have tried to remove the soil from the grave and bury the body but we have refused. There will be no burial today,” a relative of the musician told the Standard newspaper. Bolstered, the mourners ferried Jachiga’s body to St Elizabeth Hospital mortuary, on foot, and kept vigil at the homestead after rumours swirled that the officers were planning to bury him later. “There were rumours on social media at around 21 hours that he was being buried, we confirmed it was not true, we kept guard until midnight but did not see anyone,” said a local, Ken Obonyo. – STANDARD, Kenya.
ARACHA (Uganda) Thousands of Faithfuls have flocked to Minako Village turning the site of suspected Virgin Mary apparition into a pavilion. This follows an attestation from a resident that an Apparition of Virgin Mary occurred at the site in question. The believers are flocking to the village following fastspreading wild news that the blessed Mary has appeared to a woman, in the village. An incident that started on Saturday, May 2, with 42-yearold Philister Lekuru, has now reached the ears of thousands of people. An Avacado tree in the middle of Lekuru’s compound is
the centre of attraction to the believers, claiming to see the image of the Virgin Mary. Though, many people claim to have seen the apparition of Mary and her son Jesus Christ, Lekuru says she doesn’t know what happens our side. “I’m hearing from people that Mary is in the tree but I don’t know about it” Lekuru explained to RedPepper Digital in a recent interview at her home in Minako village.According to Lekuru, she only interfaced with Mother Mary and Jesus Christ on Sunday, the second day of their visit to her home. The woman, who is on 14 days lockdown and fasting reveals, she was directed to do so by the Virgin Mary in a bid to imitate the 40 days fasting of
Jesus after his baptism. Lekuru says, the Virgin Mother restricts her to stay indoors until she receives another instruction on the next step to take. On every Saturday since the incident happened, many claim seeing yellowish rings around the sun and that was the beginning of the pilgrimage. Kenyan church mourns its pope NAIROBI - Thousands of church followers lit candles and held prayers in their homes across Nyanza region after news of their leader's death broke out early yesterday. Ongombe, 96, died at Calvary, Got Kwer in Migori County, after an illness. His body was transferred to St Joseph’s Ombo Hospital mortuary. At Calvary where the church’s late charismatic and controversial founder, “Messiah” Melkio Ondeto was buried in 1991, the faithful dressed in flowing robes chanted “Ave Ave Maria” as
they prayed for the soul of the departed leader. Joseph Warambo, a senior official at the church, said they were already making burial arrangements for Ongombe, who has left behind seven children and several grand- and great-grandchildren. He said the leader would be interred at Got Kwer. Pope Ongombe as had a troubled reign at the church ever since he took over in 2004 from Pope Raphael Adika in a chaotic and controversial succession battle that has been dragging in court
for many years. After Ondeto’s death, Pope Timothy Blasio Ahitila took over the leadership of the church but died in 1997. The mantle was taken over by Pope Lawrence Chaiji, who passed it to Adika. “It is true the pope has gone to rest with the Lord. He will be buried at Got Kwer,” said Warambo. Yesterday, Pope Adika said he was aware of the passing of Ongombe, but promised to issue a statement later in the week. “Right now, I will not make any comment or statement
Families struggle with funerals under lockdown
Inmates resort to desperate measures to force social distancing in crowded prisons JOHANNESBURG - Prisoners are burning each other with boiling water in a desperate attempt to be able to self-isolate in some of the country’s prisons. This week, inmates revealed the horrific lengths they are resorting to avoid contracting Covid-19. “For now, no one is being isolated besides those who transgress by burning each other with hot water,” said John Khumalo, an inmate at Leeuwkop Maximum Correctional Centre. “We’ve already had three cases this month. It’s the only way to ensure we are isolated from the rest of the inmates as it is impossible to maintain social distancing in this prison.” Khumalo said he and his
fellow inmates were unsure who has tested positive for Covid-19 and they did not have personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and gloves. “At Leeuwkop Medium C, we were tested for Covid-19 last month. We still haven’t received our results. It’s very irresponsible of the prison officials not to let us know. “We don’t know who has it and who doesn’t. IT'S high time women stood up and took part in national issues in terms of developmental solutions, says Chisamba's 2021 independent aspiring candidate for Executive Mayor, Debra Chitaila. Born in Kaputi on the 12th of August, 1996 in Chief Chamuka's chiefdom, Chitaila did her grade 1 and 2 at Kaputi primary school then moved to Lifwambula Primary School for her grade 3 to 7. She later went to Chisamba Primary for her junior secondary and completed at Chisamba Boarding Secondary School. While at Chisamba Boarding, she served as boarding representative, house prefect and later as school vice head girl proving the old adage right that leadership does not just come overnight but it is a God given gift. Chitaila a third-year student at Nkrumah University in Kabwe studying Civic and Physical education is so far the only female that has declared interest in the race for Mayor in Chisamba. With confidence, she puts it plain and clear that she is not moved being the only female in the race for the seat. She says this infact has motivated her more and that she won't allow any situation or person underrate her. "This race is about best ideas that will transform Chisamba and not about gender. Women since time in memorial have been underlooked when it comes to politics. The funny thing is the political system including our very own culture, women are seen to be more of followers and never to be in the forefront taking the lead," she said. "This is wrong. I can tell you that the best ideas now have come from women and for me being a youth is an added advantage in terms of new developmental ideas. Once voted, I will work hand in hand with community leaders together with the council so as to enhance a clean and greener Chisamba town. She says she is the missing link for a better Chisamba. She says the district has been lagging behind for years in terms of the youth employment and the girl child education. VENTS promoter Isaac Siwale fam o u s l y known as King Hustler and artiste Fern Gee have supported Slapdee's call for musicians to realise that not all artistes are advocates of political change. Speaking in an interview, the two entertainers said it is wrong to think that all musicians must be political advocates. King Hustler said Slapdee made his point when he encouraged people to understand that music is a business and others are in it for passion and not politics. " It's true music is a business and musicians must know why they are in it. We know there are also musicians who are musicians for political change but this is not supposed to be generalised ," Hustler said. " When people get to know that there is a thin line between music industry and business, they will stop the finger pointing when they see

artistes with politicians." And Fern Gee believes music as a business has no political inclination. He advises artistes to understand why they are in music and avoid following blindly. YOUNG gender activist Jessica Khumalo has said women must stop tearing each other apart but unity to build one another. In a Facebook campaign message for unity among black women, Khumalo who is also a brands model said women have felt the pain of not being heard for a long time due to divisions.
“We have felt pain of not being heard and we need to decide to deliberately focus on building each other as women with a united voice,” she states. “All too often, we women find it easier to criticise each other instead of building each other up. With so much negativity going on around where speaking up is viewed as being rude and sometimes the men letting us down, let’s do something positive by supporting women stepping up to the mic to speak up.” She said women
have a strong voice but they need to change the narrative of always tearing each other down. She challenges young women to join the positivity campaign to promote women to change the narrative. “I therefore challenge all women on my timeline to upload one picture of yourself, only you, then tag as many sisters to do the same. Let’s build ourselves up, believe in our voices instead of always tearing each other down,” said Khumalo.

ARLIER this week two Zambian men were sentenced to five years imprisonment each after being convicted of illegal possession of ivory by courts in Mumbwa and Namwala. The Mumbwa subordinate court convicted and sentenced Muyunda Muyangwa, 40, to five years imprisonment with hard labour, on 29 May 2020, for unlawful possession of ivory weighing 4 kilograms, contrary to section 130(1) of the Zambia Wildlife Act No. 14 of 2015.In another case, the Namwala subordinate court convicted and sentenced Austin Shimamba (26), a resident of Busanga Compound in Itezhi-tezhi district, to five years imprisonment with hard labour, following his arrest for the illegal possession of ivory and elephant bones. While this is not an unusual occurrence, the lengthy prison sentences doled out to Muyangwa and Shimamba often raise questions about the value placed on our wildlife. The ivory and bones are believed to have been harvested from elephants poached in the Kafue National Park. This is Zambia’s biggest national park and the second largest in Africa.

The park is one of the most important wildlife areas in Southern Africa hosting hundreds of species of wildlife and several vital migratory routes and corridors. Like many other places across the country Kafue National Park once had an astounding number of elephants but poaching of these animals for their tusks brought numbers to a small fraction of what they once were. What often goes undiscussed when speaking about wildlife crime convictions is the fact that behind every pair of tusks confiscated is another elephant carcass lying in a protected area. Whatever value this elephant once provided to the nation, through the environment a n d t h e
economy, is no more. Zambia’s elephants continue to be slaughtered primarily to meet demand for ivory from Asian countries such as China and Vietnam, where it is turned into decorations and ornaments. Taking into account the ecological and financial value of live elephants, the Zambian Government has legislated that illegal possession of ivory is punishable by 5 to 10 years in prison. While this cannot bring back what is lost, it does show that great value is placed on these majestic creatures. Despite
a ban on the international trade in ivory and increased penalties across the continent, African elephants are still being poached in large numbers. Tens of thousands of elephants are being killed every year for their ivory tusks and Zambia is no exception. As law enforcement efforts increase in protected areas, the stakes for poaching are high, yet sadly some are still attracted to this dangerous occupation. ARTISTES are a mirror of society reflecting the passions and concerns of the people, National Arts Council of Zambia chairperson Patrick Samwibila has said. Speaking in Lusaka, Mr Samwibila said that regarding protests or any other illegal activities, the standpoint of the Council is that artistes have various laid down channels of airing out their grievances; from the national arts associations, to the Council and indeed up to the Ministry. TRACKING HON. CHISANGANO’S MISSION TO TRANSFORM GWEMBE

N September 2019, Gwembe District in Southern Province was reportedly among the 58 distrists across Zambia that was badly hit by hunger. Located in the valley of the Zambezi Escarpment and sharing boundaries with Siavonga, Monze, Pemba, Sinazongwe and Zimbabwe on the Lake Kariba, the district has only one Constituency, 14 wards with two Chiefdoms under Chief Chipepo and Chief Munyumbwe. A recent tour of Gwembe Constituency supported by the Zambia Women Parliamentary Caucus (ZPWC) in collaboration with Hivos, aimed at highlighting and profiling projects implemented by female parliamentarians in the country, revealed that Gwembe is in dire need of proper road infrastructure, good bridges, dams, improved health facilities and staff accommodation for government departments. During the tour, UPND area Member of Parliament Hon. Attractor Malungo Chisangano admitted that Gwembe is faced with a number of challenges. However, she is proud of her mission to transform the constituency. Being the first-ever female MP in Gwembe, she has undertaken a number of projects in the area and scored some successes enough to change the narrative. From the tour, it is seen that she has adopted a dedicated approach to implement projects in key areas of health, infrastructure, women empowerment, sanitation, education and others. Under education, her main concern has been constructing classroom blocks, houses for teachers and improving infrastructure of the existing schools. “Education is the key to development and a rural constituency like this one is faced with a lot of challenges. Most of the schools that are found in this district are very old, some of them, my father used them, they were built in the 50s, they are very old and dilapidated,” she says to emphasise the reason she has put up classroom blocks in different places with Kkoma Ward where she built a one by three classroom block, serving as a classical example. In this ward, the project was motivated by the fact that the original school structures were dilapidated and made learning difficult. Additionally, population for learners had increased and more space was needed. Another school, Machechete Primary was built using Community Development Funds (CDF). Hon. Chisan-

In the area, teachers lived in small-make shift structures that the community came up with. But with the house she helped build, the pressure has lessened.

In this ward, she chose a maternity mainly because accessing maternal health was impossible due to long distances and lack of transport. “We had a problem of people giving birth in homes, others walking several kilometres to access maternal health,” she

With Gwembe being prone to droughts, animals were dying and the need
for water made Hon. Chisangano to work with partners like World Vision and UNICEF to sink these boreholes under the Water Drilling Project. “Sometimes it is even difficult to prioritise what sort of project to work on as the needs are many,” she says but boasting of having also improved communication in the Constituency in all the wards except for Kole, which she is still working on. “Network was a huge problem here, we used to climb trees to make calls, “said a resident of Bbondo Ward. In the same ward, she has worked very closely with the community and formed groups to ensure development. The notable committees include Water and Sanitation, Communication, and Relief Food. On Relief Food, she shares how the Constituency was badly hit by hunger but initiated smooth plans to have a share of the relief food from DMMU and World Vision. She says she was also able to link the Constituency to milling companies to help deliver mealie-meal in the area. The idea was to aid those who had money to buy mealie-meal which was scarce, directly from the millers instead of travelling to Monze. She however, warns that even this year, her Constituency might face hunger due to looming poor harvest. The construction of a modern local court is also one of the biggest projects she is passionately working on in Chief Chipepo area. She said the motivation to build it was because the area has had no court as the first one, built years back, is dilapidated and non-functional. Hon. Chisangano still intends to facilitate the development of radio and TV receptions in the area but so far, working with TopStar, some parts of the constituency access television signals.
In all these successful projects, Hon. Chisangano prides herself with the full involvement of the community. She believes one of her biggest strengths is to get back to the community. “You really have to be on the ground, get what the people want so that whatever you present in parliament is the truth and it has backing from the people,” she insists. The MP has developed an open door policy such that constituency members can interact freely with her at any time on developmental issues. ”People can call me for any problem they are being faced with anytime,” she adds. Using her community involvement strategy, she has won the confidence of her electorates and managed to form various community support groups for women, youth and ward officials. Her interaction with traditional leadership is also on good standing. She agrees that her run in office has bordered more on her great networking skills with various government district officials that are crucial to the success of her programmes. Being female MP, Hon. Chisangano admits that it was challenging at first as all her 14 wards are headed by male councillors but she was determined to remain firm. “At first, I was not sure whether people were going to accept me. When we built the rapport, they believed in me. And the way the CDF is being used has given them confidence in me,” she says. And like any other leader, Hon. Chisangano is not short of challenges. “As you know Gwembe Constituency is vast and has a lot of challenges, there was one thing I had planned for 2020, 2021, I said that when I receive the last CDF, I was supposed to take it to road infrastructure,” she said. “As you have also seen that most of the bridges are washed away, that was my plan. But that is something I can’t tell, since we have not received CDF for 2019, this is 2020.” Other projects that are top on her list include construction of a police post and the Chipepo-Chisekese road that is supposed to be done by the government but is still pending. Now that her first term is nearing an end, her desire to continue serving the people is according to her, ‘up to the constituents themselves’. She is ready to run for another term, and as a woman, she is eager to share her successes and motivation.
