FOLLOWING Government’s guidance on how semi and contact sports ought to resume its activities, the Zambia Hockey Association (ZHA) says it will mid this month start with a small-sided league and later revert to the normal one. ZHA general secretary Thomas Mumba said they had resolved to start with a small-sided league called Hockey Five so as to keep the numbers low. Mumba said that the Hockey Five was scheduled to start in the third week of July but would later resume the normal league once the situation normalised. He said that starting with the Hockey Five was one way of helping the players regain their fitness levels due to the high intensity of the game and that it would help them keep in shape and prepare for the upcoming events. Mumba said that the normal league would still go ahead for the 2020 season but would however be a congested one due to the time left before the end of the year. “For the Hockey League what we have resolved is that we are going to start with the small league which is called the Hockey Five because we want to control the numbers. After that we are going back to the normal league that we always play,” Mumba said. The 2020 Hockey League season was scheduled to have opened in March prior to the suspension of all sports activities which was a result of the Covid-19 global outbreak. All other events on the Zambia Hockey calendar remains suspended due to the halting global hockey events.

urday 20 June. Heidi, 43, a respected motivational speaker and manager of services for youth and adults at the League of Friends of the Blind (Lofob), died in the afternoon. POLICE have nabbed four suspects aged between 17 and 39 on Friday, following the murder of a police officer in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase said in a statement that Constable Mzuvukile Emanuel Hlahleni from Steenberg police station was killed at his home in Khayelitsha after an argument with his partner. “It is alleged Hlahleni was allegedly stoned to death by family members of his girlfriend and some members of the community close to the family.” Nkwalase said Hawks national priority violence crimes (NPVC) teams traced and arrested the suspects which included two 17-yearold minors. British film and TV star actor Earl Cameron dies aged 102

EARL Cameron, one of the first black actors to forge a successful career in British film and television, has died aged 102, a family friend has said. Bermuda-born Cameron, who lived with his wife in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, died after going to sleep on Friday, Martin Beckett said. Cameron first appeared on screen in the 1951 film, Pool of London, in a rare starring

role for a black actor. His other credits were the films, The Queen and Thunderball and Doctor Who. Cameron was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2009 New Year Honours. Siwale known in the entertainment world as Cee Jay who is a music and media manager under Iconic label said this ahead of the official opening of his new business venture Kopa Grill which opened in Ndola on Friday. This business is envisioned to be one of the biggest indigenous owned Fast Food Take Away. Siwale said that Zambians needed to take an active role in the country’s economic recovery especially during this Covid-19 pandemic. He observed that since the Covid-19 Pandemic partial shut down, many countries had shown their dependency on foreign based entrepre-

neurs and left a gap in the market that Zambians can take advantage of and fill up. “The Kopa Grill which is a youth entrepreneurship venture will create employment opportunities for youth as well as the other young people. This will help to bring ostracized youth back into the economic mainstream and address some of the socio-psychological problems and delinquency that arise from joblessness,” Siwale said. “Youth Entrepreneurship also helps youths to develop new skills and experiences and promote innovation and resilience in youth. As young entrepreneurs, I believe we are particularly responsive to new economic opportunities and trends, and will be able to better adapt to the changing market.” Siwale who is also proprietor of MEIT Technologies –ICT and Information Technology Security Consultants and working with his wife Memory Sitali says the setting up of Kopa Grill is a youth innovation that will create jobs that are so desired in this difficult economic time. He explains that the vision of Kopa Grill is to extend to different parts of the country. “There is no dream that is too big not to go head on with it, that is one of my mottos and even as I embarked on this venture, I see a Kopa Grill in every city and town,” said Siwale.

YOUTHS in Munali Constituency’s Kalingalinga area have vowed to stay active and contribute to economic development of the nation by engaging in agriculture.

Inspired by their area Member of Parliament for Munali Prof. Nkandu Luo, through her empowerment programme, Kalingalinga youths are making a huge difference in vegetable growing and chicken raring which they want to turn into big business. Moffat Nkoma the Kalingalinga Youth Coordinator and initiator of Kalingalinga Youth Trust that works closely with Prof. Nkandu Luo said the youths are very happy to see their progress in gardening and are willing to turn their projects into big

business. Kalingalinga has two groups under the Kalingalinga Youth Trust that are raring chickens and growing vegetables for their income. “We are trying to remove overdependence on the government and our parents. We are engaged in Agrobusiness and we want to make it big. We are teaching the youth that they can also make money without depending on their parents,” says Nkoma, who explained that the garden project came up after the youths were empowered with chickens by Hon. Nkandu Luo. “We set up the garden so that we could raise moneys to buy things like feed and medecines for the chicken. What we were avoiding was to always go back to the Hon. For support. We had to find our own means to set up an income-generating venture.” Mr Nkoma who is fully-in-

volved in training and guiding these youths on their projects said he is thankful to Bishop Mutonga for providing the youth with the land for their gardening. He advised youths to get involved in agriculture and stop blaming government for jobs. “Youths feel they can only be rich if they have the white-collar jobs. This agriculture can give them opportunities to make a lot of money,” he said. “ We have been talking with the minister and we want to go 100 per cent in agriculture. We want to register all the groups as limited companies so that it is easy to monitor the progression of these projects. We communicate with the MP; she is very involved and very supportive. The song is taken from book Psalms 121:4 “the protector of Israel never slumbers or sleeps." Ignitius was inspired to get into gospel music because of his desire to help transform people’s lives and also was inspired by great Zambian musicians like Mulenga Mulumbwa, Adonai Singers and also Nigerian worshiper Elijah oyelade. He described his music journey as not an easy one because he faced disappointment from his producer he was working with. He said he delayed to release the album even after paying in full. the nutshell, Ignitius insists that music carries a message of Christ and that he aims to bring more people closer to God through his music which he believes has power to influence the world.

F you have been reading this series of articles for the last few months you may have paused and asked yourself “why is bushmeat so important all of a sudden?”. Perhaps living in a developing country such as Zambia you may question the wisdom of investing resources in wildlife conservation when so many other pressing issues persist.

To better understand the significance of Zambia’s illegal bushmeat trade and the effects it has on our country, let’s take a look at the Kafue Lechwe. This a small but iconic species of semiaquatic antelope, endemic to the Kafue Flats of Zambia. That means this species can only be found in our country and nowhere else in the world. A study released in 2019 by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) showed evidence of continued decline of the population of the species. The Kafue Lechwe population currently stands at an estimated 23,000, the lowest ever recorded for the Kafue Flats. A previous study conducted in 2015 estimated a population of 29,000 thus suggesting a 19 percent decline in 5 years. Looking back in time to the 1930s hundreds of thousands of Lechwe roamed the flats and even in the more recent 1970s populations exceeded 100,000. So, what happened? As our country’s population has grown so has its taste for bushmeat. The drastic population decline of the Kafue Lechwe and other species can now be attributed to an increase in the trade of “Nyama Ya Mu Sanga”. This misunderstood popular meal is pushing species into extinction. Illegal bushmeat is unregulated and as a result the meat is unhygienically prepared and dangerous to eat. The recent COVID-19 global pandemic has been linked to the illegal wildlife trade, which has been reported as the cause of many zoonotic diseases in humans. While bushmeat poses a huge threat to public health in Zambia it poses an even bigger threat to wildlife populations as shown in the case of the Kafue Lechwe. dustry that not only affects prey populations (food for larger carnivores) but all wildlife. A primary mode of capture of wildlife for meat, is the use of wire snares. These snares are silent and indiscriminate killers which result in significant bycatch. While intended to capture prey for human consumption, the placement of snares in protected areas often results in the capture of many other vulnerable species such as elephants and lions and wild dogs. It is now well understood that this indiscriminate poaching will lead to the collapse of prey populations which in turn results in the collapse of other flagship

populations and ultimately ecosystem degradation which affects us all. As we all know, our ecosystems are finely balanced and the collapse of one vital part of the system results in the collapse of another. As the Ubuntu adage states “I am, because we are”. Ecosystems function in the same way. Scientists have reported across the world that we will face increasingly more human disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic and environment challenges such as droughts from climate change if we continue to damage ecosystems. To put things in greater perspective. The Kafue Flats is a 6,500 square kilometre floodplain historically known to

be one of the richest wildlife habitats in Africa. The area is important for fishing, cattle grazing, sugarcane farming, and production of hydroelectric power. It not only sustains local people through hunting, fishing, and cropping but it also a direct source of water and resources for the millions of people living in nearby areas such as Lusaka. In Zambia, we cannot afford to lose the Kafue Lechwe, the Kafue Flats or the precious ecosystem balance that keeps us all alive. So, the next time you are offered “nyama yamu sanga” at a special occasion or a friend’s house, remember illegal bushmeat dangerous for you, for me and for Zambia.
