Paper Dolls The first paper dolls, jointed and mounted on sticks in the 1700s, were called “Jumping jacks”. These half puppet/half paper dolls were often used in jest to satirize the noble classes. Early paper dolls were printed in an outfit that could not be removed. By the mid1700s, paper dolls appeared in underwear for changeable wardrobes often printed in advertisements. Elaborately detailed outfits arrived with lithography in 1796.
