The Mount Vernon Pool officially opened May 31, but it was still a busy weekend for city staff involving the pool. City administrator Chris Nosbisch said city staff was notified at 11 p.m. that one of the pumps around the pool had been submerged in water and stopped functioning. They were able to get the pump back working that evening because the issue was discovered early. City crews left the pool at 1 a.m., thinking everything was ready to go for the opening of the pool Saturday. At 7 a.m., crews arrived to discover the heat pumps in the pool were shut off, as well as other electrical powered items. “What we discovered is that the north side of town had a power blip early Saturday morning,” Nosbisch said. “Most consumers wouldn’t have noticed it, but all seven of those pumps at the pool were tripped off because of a power failure.” Crews had the panels reset and operating by 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, but it points to ongoing issues staff will need to continue watching at the pool moving forward. That included the pool closing early June 5 to address some of those minor issues. Nosbisch said that the pool is still losing a small amount of water, even with the repairs to a basin, and suspects the issue may be in a pipe between the pumps that work to keep the pool operating is leaking, which will be addressed by sealing the exterior of the pipe. The chairs that were supposed to be at the pool are on backorder and not scheduled to arrive until July 1. In the interim, people are allowed to bring their own seating to the pool. Council member Stephanie West said she still considers it a huge success the pool opened at the time it did with all the issues the pool was facing ahead of opening after the repairs made this spring.
