Pixar offers empathetic engine and political insights in ‘Coco’ By Derrick Clements Special to the Daily Herald

In Disney Pixar’s “Coco,” Miguel’s love of music ultimately leads him to the Land of the Dead where he teams up with charming trickster Héctor. “Coco” features an original score from Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, the original song “Remember Me” by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and additional songs co-written by Germaine Franco and co-director/screenwriter Adrian Molina.
W
hen we first meet Héctor, a character voiced by Mexican actor Gael García Bernal in Pixar’s new film “Coco,” he’s attempting (for what seems like not the first time) to illegally cross a border. The scene is played for comedy — he’s dressed up as Frida Kahlo in this particular attempt — but the urgency and desperation underlying this illegal act is not looked over by the filmmakers, and the empathetic engine of the scene becomes clearer as Héctor’s story unfolds. If any segment of the “Coco” audience enters the theater with assumptions and moral judgments about this kind of behavior on borders, the film offers a powerful invitation to see a different point of view. In real life, the voice actor spoke out against President Trump’s proposed border wall between the United States and Mexico while presenting the Best Animated Feature award at this year’s Oscars ceremony (a category that will undeniably be associ-
ated with “Coco” next year, though I think the film deserves and stands a chance to get a Best Picture nod, too). More recently, García Bernal told Variety that he dedicates “Coco” to “all the children who have ancestors from Mexico and Latin America” in the age of Trump. “In this moment, these kids are growing up with a lot of fear because the established narrative says that they come from families that come from rapists, murderers, and drug traffickers,” the actor told the publication. “We are such a complex and profound culture, and these kids need to be empowered to stand up and say that what is being said about them is a complete lie.” The border that Héctor is attempting to cross in “Coco” is not a separation of countries, but one between the normal world and the Land of the Dead, a realm populated by skeletons of those who have passed on. The skeletons are a pure delight from a design and animation perspective:
Their vast diversity of shapes and sizes may stretch credulity if you’re a stickler for strict anatomical accuracy, but they are incredibly appealing to look at, and even more so when they move. Miguel, a young living boy (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez) finds himself in the Land of the Dead by mistake during his family’s celebration of the Día de los Muertos holiday, kicking off an adventure that is as filled with imagination and wonder as anything that American movie screens have ever projected. I absolutely adored “Coco.” Like the film’s director, Lee Unkrich, I am a white American. But I loved being immersed in a culture and tradition different from what I’m used to in my American animation (or my lived experiences), and I appreciate the efforts that were obviously made to allow “Coco” to be an authentic expression of Mexican culture, rather than a caricatured appropriation of it.
Co-director Adrian Molina, who also wrote the screenplay with Matthew Aldrich, is a Mexican-American artist at Pixar, and the studio consulted with a team of cultural advisors to help shape the story — including cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz, who was a vocal critic of the Walt Disney company and Pixar when the parent company made an obtuse effort to trademark the phrase “Dia de los Muertos.” Such a misstep illustrates the perils of an American company led by white corporate leaders wading into cultural waters for its narrative-based product-making, but the studio’s reaction to criticism illustrates how “Coco” managed to so skillfully navigate those perils to create something as sensitive and deeply loving as the final film turned out to be. has appeared in all 19 Pixar movies to date, and has a tiny part here too). This inclusion of a wide variety of Mexican voices in the film’s soundscape is another factor in the film’s beating heart and cultural authenticity. The text of the film itself also works in the favor of not only the film’s “political correctness,” but its sharp political and moral point of view. Not only does the story flip the stereotype of the “criminal crossing the border” by investing in the urgency of the immigrant’s perspective, the film also explicitly tackles appropriation as a concept, and could serve as a jumping off point to learn more about that idea. It comes across in film with the discovery that one of the more powerful and adored characters has gained power by exploiting the talents and ideas of others, which — as anyone who has seen “Dreamgirls” knows — is also the history of cultural appropriation in American entertainment. “Coco” succeeds by resisting the tendency to impose its white American corporate perspective on the Mexican characters and culture it is interested in, and instead turning the microphone, the paintbrush and the animation toolkit over to those with

authentic personal stakes in that culture. I haven’t even mentioned the music, which makes “Coco” the closest thing Pixar has come to a full musical, and which is absolutely thrilling. And there’s much more to say about the hilarious and profoundly moving character animation throughout. And the thematic points the film has to make about family relationships are beautifully presented, as well. There’s too much goodness in this film to say in one review. Fortunately, this is a movie that exists now, so we can all see it and talk about it again and again as long as we live — and who knows? Maybe even longer. A voice for the voiceless
“B
lossoms in the Dust,” an Oscar-winning film from 1941, comes to the SCERA Center for the Arts on Tuesday as part of its Cinema Classics Series. The film tells the true story of Edna Gladney, an early campaigner for children’s rights. One of Gladney’s causes was finding homes for orphaned and illegitimate children. For Gladney, it was personal: She was born out of wedlock when her mother was only 17, never met her biological father, and was sent to live with her aunt and uncle when she was 18. “Blossoms in the Dust” is a
highly fictionalized retelling of her story. This fictionalization includes the suicide of Gladney’s adopted sister, Charlotte, and the death of Gladney’s son. The film culminates in Gladney’s quest to find a home for a crippled boy she raised from an infant and nursed back to health. Tuesday’s screening begins at 10 a.m. at the SCERA’s Clarke Grand Theatre. Tickets are $2, available starting 30 minutes prior to the screening. Ages 18 and older are permitted. hanksgiving (or, as it’s known in my multinational household, American Thanksgiving) is a day to reflect on what we are most thankful for. And since one of the things I’m most thankful for is the ability to write and talk about movies as part of my job, I thought I’d get even more specific and talk about the movies I’m most thankful for. This isn’t necessarily my list of favorite movies. But I sat down and tried to think about the movies that have shaped me the most as a person, or added the most to my life during my formative years. Think of this list as a collection of reverse Horcruxes — as I first watched each of these movies, they created a little piece of what would become my soul.
‘Aladdin’ (1992)
I watched Disney’s “Aladdin” so many times as a child that, as an 8-year-old, I formed an unofficial fan club and invited other children in my neighborhood to participate. I don’t remember how many meetings we had, but I did make T-shirts.
‘All the President’s Men’ (1976)
Here are some of the movies I’m thankful for
this movie shaped my imagination in a significant way.
‘Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb’ (1964)
I first encountered Stanley Kubrick’s bleakly satirical comedy in middle school while doing a project about the Cold War, and it taught me that humor could explore the depths of life’s senselessness in ways that straightforward drama could not.
‘The King’s Speech’ (2010)
I have an essay in a book being published next year that goes into this story in more depth, but I was in my mid-20s when I first watched an R-rated movie, and it was “The King’s
Speech.” I expected the experience would be more strikingly different from the normal filmgoing experience I was used to, but, aside from a larger number of white-haired people in the audience, it was not.
The ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy (1977-1983) Even though we are well into the third official “Star Wars” trilogy, there is still only one “Star Wars” trilogy, really. And seeing it as a child was transformational like no other cinematic experience was. It had family drama, stunning inventiveness, and thrilling music. I still feel moved when I hear “The Asteroid Field” track from “The Empire Strikes Back” soundtrack.
‘States of Grace’ (2005)
I saw Richard Dutcher’s sequel
to “God’s Army” the year before I myself became a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I still consider it to be one of the most profound spiritual films I have seen. The film spoke to my religious faith and broadened my language to understand it.
‘Toy Story 2’ (1999)
I’m glad this one comes at the end alphabetically because it deserves to be the final word on this list. I started a podcast because Pixar meant so much to me personally, and it all stems from my experience as a 12-year-old going to see “Toy Story 2” with my sister over Thanksgiving weekend. I was expecting a half-hearted cash grab, but the film ended up being a true original, one that deepened the original film and made me feel things that have been making me come back to the movies ever since. When I first saw this one, I was an intrepid high school newspaper editor, and seeing the story of Woodward and Bernstein taking on the president of the United States filled me with the conviction that free speech and rigorous reporting is an essential part of a free society. As an adult, I harnessed that conviction into covering the type of stories that matter most of all: entertainment.

BYUtv debuts holiday special about WWII POW, ‘Instrument of War’

Movies associated with Christmas might generally be focused on the happier parts of life, but a new feature film debuting Thanksgiving Day on BYUtv tells a grittier Christmas tale: the story of American bomber pilot Clair Cline, who was captured and held as a prisoner of war in a German prison camp, Stalag Luft I, during World War II. The film is “Instrument of War,” and director Adam Thomas Anderegg said the contrast between Christmas and war makes for an interesting story. “There is a really kind of a dismal, hopeless aspect to war, especially when you’re in the middle of it,” Anderegg said. “I think that the juxtaposition of the two makes it interesting.” While Cline was a prisoner, he turned to music to help him get through the ordeal. “One of the things that really drew us to this story was reading these accounts that we found from other POWs in Stalag Luft I that talked about this POW that had made a violin, and it was his means of keeping hope alive, having something to do,” said producer Russ Kendall. “It represented a connection to his wife and to him, and it gave him something to focus on during the cold, during the hunger, during all of the deprivations that they faced. This violin, and the process of building it, gave him and those around him something to focus on and maintain hope.” To bring the musical elements at the heart of the story to life, the filmmaking team brought on the talents of Academy Award-nominated composer Mark Isham. “Mark is amazing. So prolific,” Anderegg said. “One of my favorite scores that he did was ‘October Sky,’ and I think the reason I like it so much is there’s a melody that keeps drawing you back to home, and then (the characters) go out into their adventure, become the ‘rocket boys,’ and he uses that same theme to take you to both places, and he does it so masterfully.” For “Instrument of War,” Isham composed some music before production started, so that it could be in-

Then, he scored the project after filming — which took place earlier this year in Lithuania — was complete. Prior to its Thanksgiving Day debut on BYUtv, Anderegg and Kendall have shown the film at festivals and screenings. On the big screen, audiences have responded to how cinematic the film is. “The people that see it are often surprised that its home is on television,” Anderegg said. “So that gives you an idea of how high the production value is.” When it airs on BYUtv, there will be no commercial breaks during the 90-minute block. “I applaud BYU for making that decision to not cut away to commercials or promos for other shows that they have,” Kendall said. “They believe in this story and realize that it is a cinematic experience that should be seen

Kendall said that mission coincides with Kaleidoscope’s, as well. “For a number of years now, BYU’s direction and mission has been to ‘see
the good in the world,’ and to create content and tell stories that do shine a light on things that are hopeful and that are of great worth, and those stories are everywhere, in any walk of life, in any nationality, in any religious denomination there’s good out there,” he said. “That dovetails very closely with what Kaleidoscope does. We’re storytellers. Our mission when we started out was to tell stories that bring light and hope, but that do that in a way that is just telling a great story. And inherent in a good story is beauty and light and hope, and darkness too. The Shops at Riverwoods The Lighting of The Riverwoods was held Nov. 17, and the display includes thousands of lights on trees, across walkways and around the gazebo at The Shops at Riverwoods. “Lark & Spur: An Evening in Paris” comes to the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo on Monday.

ark & Spur, a six-piece acoustic ensemble, performs at the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo on Monday. The group will be joined by ballroom dancers Kayci and Casey Treu. The show, titled “An Evening in Paris,” evokes the sounds and atmosphere of old Parisian cabarets and dance halls. Founded by Lori Decker and Jeff Whiteley, Lark & Spur knows a thing or two about France. The two of them began their musical career together as street
performers in Paris and other European cities. Those performances led to performances on radio and TV stations in France and Switzerland, culminating in performances at the Montreux and Brienz jazz festivals. Monday’s show is part of the Covey’s Excellence Concert Series. It is free, and begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are not required. The Covey is located at 425 W. Center St. in Provo. In defense of Katy Perry
T
his newest album cycle hasn’t exactly been kind to Katy Perry. The pop star, who headlines Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City on Friday, released her fourth album, “Witness,” this past June. Commercially, “Witness” hasn’t performed as well as her previous few albums. (Her breakout album, 2010’s “Teenage Dream,” was a juggernaut with five singles reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.) And critically, “Witness” has garnered its share of derision. “This is the singer known for spraying whipped cream from her cupcake bra, so it’s not like she’s ever been a master of understatement,” wrote Stereogum’s Chris DeVille earlier this year. “But in the absence of the monumental jams we’ve come to expect from her, all her overzealous attention-seeking and foot-in-mouth blunders look more like desperation.”
Yes, “Witness” hasn’t brought seismic hits like “Teenage Dream” or “Firework.” I will contend, though, that Perry needed an album like “Witness” in the long run — mainly because it takes actual risks. She hadn’t done that for a while. So what if every risk didn’t pay off? Instead of traditional pop hooks, the singles off “Witness” leverage electropop grooves and old house music beats. This isn’t quite the same Perry we’ve heard before. She’s trying new things, and thank goodness for that. It doesn’t always work, and her surreal, self-deprecating goofiness feels more pronounced when not buoyed by massive hit singles. As a pop consumer, though, I’ve quite enjoyed her “Witness” phase. It has kept me interested at a juncture where I might’ve stopped paying attention otherwise. In pop music, that’s half the battle. — Court Mann
