Customers beyond Sanpete County attracted to Beck’s BY CHRISTI BABBITT
During the last 60 years, a television sales and repair shop opened on Mt. Pleasant’s Main Street has grown into a furniture store that attracts customers from far beyond Sanpete County. “We have customers from over in Nephi and south, Manti, Gunnison,” said Janiel Sego, appliance manager at Beck’s Home Furnishings. “We actually have some customers in Utah County that will drive down here. … Our

furniture and mattresses are less than the metro area, and people recognize that.” The store has even attracted customers from St. George. Customers who shop at Beck’s realize there are great deals there, and word gets out, she said. “We try to make sure that we provide for the customer, that we provide good customer service, that our customers come first,” Sego said. “We’re not just in it for the almighty dollar like some of

the box stores might be.” Beck’s Home Furnishings began as Beck’s TV, a business opened by Allen Beck, in 1959 at 140 W. Main in Mt. Pleasant. The business offered televisions for sale as well as repair services. Allen’s son Mark Beck began operating Beck’s TV in 1974, with Mark’s wife Laura joining him in running the business after they were married in 1976. Over time, and through its association with BrandSource, an independent retailer co-op, the business added premium-brand appliances, furniture and mattresses to its assortment, all supported by its professional sales, delivery and installation services. The name of the business was changed
in the 1980s to Beck’s Home Furnishings. In 1994, Beck’s moved to its current location at 14 W. Main. In August of 2019, Beck’s Home Furnishings was named the 2019 BrandSource Dealer of the Year for the Rocky Mountain Region and honored for their commitment to excellence in the retail industry at the BrandSource National Convention and Expo in Dallas, Texas. “It has been my goal to have this business always be competitive with the large stores in the metro area and offer much better personalized customer service than they can offer,” states a bio of Mark Beck posted on the Beck’s Home Furnishings website, www.shopbecks.com.
Quarantine ignites pottery sales at Spring City gallery BY CHRISTI BABBITT
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of events that usually attracted people to his Spring City gallery, potter Joe Bennion was concerned his sales would plummet like they did during the recession of the late 2000s. “What I didn’t see coming was #quarantinesourdough,” Bennion said. Bennion, owner of Horseshoe Mountain Pottery, specializes in what he calls “utilitarian pottery,” or pottery made to be used. “I make pottery for the home, which generally means food,” he said. “A vase is as close as I get to making something that’s made to be looked at and not used.” Bennion makes cups, bowls, plates and other kitchen items — including his bread baker, a bowl with a lid used for baking artisan loaves. In mid-March, when the virus quarantine began, Bennion started noticing pictures on social media of bread being created with his bread baker. Recognizing a potential demand, Bennion made a couple of dozen bread bakers, then posted on Facebook a date and time when they’d be ready for purchase at his gallery. Within 3 days, they were all sold. He made more, and they sold. The bread bakers are leading his sales, but other pottery items are being purchased as well. “I’m seeing two to three times the volume of business that I’m used to this time of year,” Bennion said. The success of this simple marketing on social media illustrates the different approaches Bennion has utilized over the years in his longtime pottery business. He and his wife, Lee Udall Bennion, purchased their first home in Spring City three weeks after their marriage in 1977. They had discovered the town while on their honeymoon; it looked like the town they both wished they had grown up in. Bennion had been studying to be a school teacher, but by the time they moved to Spring City, his wife had convinced him to pursue pottery as his vocation. “She recognized that education was getting me really uptight and rubbing me the wrong way, and she said, ‘I don’t want to spend my life with somebody who’s frustrated and unhappy,’” Bennion said. Bennion changed his major and went on to earn a master of fine arts degree. Meanwhile, he made pottery in a chicken coop behind his home until the couple sold their house and purchased another in town as well as an old store front on Main Street that had been empty for decades. “I knew by then that I needed a Main Street

location. I needed drive-by traffic,” Bennion said. The store was converted into Bennion’s gallery and studio, and he continues to operate his business there today. Early in his career, Bennion had his works in galleries all around the country and traveled internationally to speak at symposiums, conferences and workshops. These activities are important in the art world, he said, but are really designed for people who work at teaching institutions. By the mid-1990s, he realized he didn’t want to be on the road — he wanted to be home, making and selling pottery. He began holding four shows a year at his gallery and people would stop by and purchase his pottery. Then he started printing a newsletter he gave to customers and sent out to a mailing list he’d compiled. Within the first year of doing the newsletter, his business quadrupled. The newsletter continued for 25 years until, in 2017, the cost and time involved became prohibitive. Bennion now occasionally sends out an email newsletter. Social media, however, has brought new possibilities, and the success of his bread baker sales has him considering another change in his marketing strategy, perhaps to monthly kiln openings announced on social media instead of large quarterly sales. Regardless of what attracted the customers, however,

The Ephraim Manti Airport provides a vital link to the economic growth of Sanpete County. The airport has been improved over the years by lengthening the runway to accommodate larger aircraft, adding two new hangers and fuel tanks. Airport provides critical services to community Just west of Highway 89 between the cities of Ephraim and Manti is a thin stretch of pavement nearly one mile long. For Sanpete County, that ribbon of asphalt is central to economic development as well as community safety and health care. “That’s the most important mile of pavement you have in your community,” said Jeremy Hallows of the runway at the Manti-Ephraim Airport. Hallows, a pilot who flies for a business as well as teaches flying lessons, serves as chairman of the airport’s board of directors. The Manti-Ephraim Airport is the only airport in Sanpete County, and its runway — which measures just over 5,000 feet long — serves as the take-off and landing site for private and business flights, firefighting aircraft, medical aircraft, hobbyists who fly their own planes and students participating in flight training. The airport has seen a variety of improvements during the last four years including a project that repaved the runway and lengthened it by 420 feet, allowing larger
aircraft to land at the airport. The airport’s tarmac was redone two years ago, and two new hangars have been built by airplane owners at the airport. A new instrument approach procedure was added about four years ago that directs pilots to land safely when bad weather obscures their view of the runway. Fuel tanks have been added to the airport so pilots can fill up their aircraft. Before the tanks were obtained, pilots couldn’t obtain fuel at the Manti-Ephraim Airport. Having fuel on hand has attracted pilots to the airport that otherwise would have gone somewhere else, Hallows said. “I think the whole goal with it is just to enhance our community,” Hallows said of the airport enhancements. Having an airport in the community is a boon to economic development, he said. Business executives are interested in having a convenient way to travel and will make decisions on where to locate their businesses based on that availability.
The airport is also crucial when wildfires break out in the region. Last year, while firefighters were battling blazes in the area, a K-MAX helicopter utilized the Manti-Ephraim Airport as its base while it transported giant buckets of water through the air to dump on the fires. When an accident or other incident requires a quick medical response, the AirMed helicopter based in Nephi uses the Manti-Ephraim Airport to airlift patients out. For all of its benefit to the community, the airport operates at very little cost to the local population. Hallows said the airport gets 90 percent of its funding from the federal government, five percent from the state and five percent from the cities of Manti and Ephraim. To familiarize the community with the airport and the services it provides, a fly-in and community event is held every September at the Manti-Ephraim Airport where the public is invited to view various types of aircraft and enjoy hot dogs and drinks. Jensen’s Department Store has been a community icon in Sanpete County for nearly 100 years. Gail Jensen, John’s grandfather, founded the store and at one time three generations worked at the store at the same time. John’s father, Bob, continued on after Gail’s death. For 96 years, there’s been a Jensen’s Department Store operating on Manti’s Main Street. Challenges have come in the form of big box stores opening in the county and the advent of online shopping, but the store — where children, parents and grandparents have shopped for decades — is still offering clothing and other items for sale to local residents. “It helps the community, and I like doing it,” said John Jensen, who owns the store along with his wife Kay. The store was started by Jensen’s grandfather Gail Jensen in a building that was formerly a hotel. It began as
a grocery store in just a third of the space the store now occupies. Later, Gail purchased more space and put in a piece goods store. Eventually, he bought a third and final part, remodeled and opened the store in the space it occupies today. At that time, Gail made the business into a department store offering only dry goods. In earlier days, the store did a brisk business, said Jensen, who remembers sweeping floors at the store while he was in junior high school. After graduating from high school and attending college for a year, Jensen returned to the store and has been working there ever since.
Jensen, his father and his grandfather all worked full-time at the store along with two clerks. Eventually, Jensen’s father took over the business, and later it was passed on to John. The store currently offers women’s clothing and dresses as well as shirts and pants for men, including Levi and Wrangler brands. There are also shoes for all ages. Only Jensen and part-time workers staff the store these days, and Jensen said he can see a decline in business due to shoppers turning to Amazon. However, he said he still feels his store has the support of the community.

Track 89 North, a railcar motel on the south end of Mt. Pleasant, has been an ongoing project for several years. The motel is closer to opening this year. A new trail has recently been added enhancing the area.

MT. PLEASANT-- Good things are happening at the south end of Mt. Pleasant these days. The rail car motel, Track 89 North, is closer to being able to open with the remodeling of rail cars into motel rooms. In addition a 10-foot wide trail has been added to the area. Tracks, wheels, the railroad cars and even a caboose, were brought to Mt. Pleasant, unloaded by crane and assembled on site. Now there are a total of eight rail car motel rooms and the caboose, with some of the cars coming from as far away as Montana. Track 89 North contractor Bill Burgoyne is eager to point out the repurposed railroad trestle wood used for the deck on one of the cars, and the 1 ½” oak planks salvaged from a semi-trailer was used as the living room floor in another car. Burgoyne says the windows and doors of the cars are purposely positioned facing west, insulating them from any traffic noise. Each car has its own front deck facing the mountains with amazing views and sleeps two to four people. A kitchenette, living room, bedroom, full bathroom and ample closet space are in each unit. Craftsman details
like bead board paneling, tongue and groove vaulted ceilings and tile bathrooms are different in each rail car. And of course they all include modern amenities such as heat and air conditioning. New trail In addition to the rail car motel, a new trail has been added to the area, constructed by the Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area. The trail winds around the baseball field, weaves around the back side of the Track 89 North Railway Car Motel, around the horse arena, past Mt. Pleasant City Park and turns west by Carter’s RV Park before heading north toward The Depot café, which serves as an information center for the Highway 89 corridor, and back to the beginning. The trail has already been paved, and final details like the middle line stripe and signage will be completed within the next few weeks. This is the first phase of the trail. The trail is for non-motorized use such as walking, jogging, biking and in-line skating. The second phase will continue its way toward Spring City. Mt. Pleasant City will host a contest of naming the trail in the near future. June 17, 2020

Snow College boosts economy through education Snow College, with campuses in Ephraim and Richfield, is the largest employer in Sanpete and Sevier Counties. It is hard to overemphasize the economic value that Snow College employees, families, and students have on all neighboring counties. State Representative Derrin Owens refers to Snow College as “The heartbeat of Central and rural Utah.” From humble pioneer beginnings in 1888, Snow College has shown grit and fortitude. Facing closure during the depression, faculty members accepted perishable goods as compensation. Today, Snow College continues the legacy of its founders and remains committed to rural Utah. such as “self-isolate” and “social distancing” became a part of our vernacular? •Remember when we as a country pulled together, worked together and looked for solutions to ventilators and more surgical masks and Silicon Slopes coalesced to develop new testing software and firmware to make more Covid-19 tests available for more patients and results to those tests came back faster. Remember when we all developed more patience for each other? ›Here we are in June, 2020 wondering what we do next. ›Here we are wondering whose fault this is, who is going to pay and why the Governor and President are not opening the business community and the recreational activities as fast as we would like.
›Here we are wondering how the government is going to rescue us from an economic collapse. Last week I was invited to help load sheep onto a Skyline Sheep Company semi-truck. As a side note; (my goal, since I was 5 years old, is to someday become a sheep man.) With that personal background you can imagine how excited I was to be invited to help load sheep on a Skyline Sheep Company truck. But when I arrived at the location, ready to keep the loading chute full, a friend of mine explained that the sheep ranchers and Utah Farm Bureau had come together to form a non-profit organization called “Farmers Feeding Utah”. These sheep were headed to Montezuma Creek, UT; to help supply the Four Corners area with food. That experience was revela-
tory and instructive to me. I also realized that experience is not unique to the sheep men. That type of behavior, that charitable generosity is culturally lived and expected as a rural way of life. These sheep men like all residents of rural Utah don’t wait for the government, state or federal, to step in and rescue them or their neighbors in the Four Corners. They made a plan and they are still working that plan. Another friend of mine was making a routine house call to a little Hispanic family. Their phone and Internet access were not working. After this friend of mine completed the job of fixing the internet, the single mother asked in broken English, “Now what can I do for you? I have rice and beans and other food for you and your family”. Not only was this lady’s act one of the great examples of Christian behavior, but also it was again typical rural Utah behavior. We are more concerned about the state of a family’s well-being than we are about who started the problem and how are we going to punish them. Those looking for someone to punish for this pandemic, remind me of the man that fell off a cliff and prayed to God to be rescued. Near the bottom of the cliff, his pants got caught on the limb of a tree, but the pants were torn. The

limb of the tree catching the man saved him from a deadly landing. His next conversation with God was “Never mind, I can get to the bottom from here, by myself ”. His last question to God was, “Who is to blame for planting this tree right where I landed and who is going to pay for my torn pants?” As I consider the future and how we are all going to survive 2020 AC, (After Coronavirus) and perhaps another breakout of Covid-19, aka Coronavirus, I am confident that our faith in each other and our optimism will work in our favor. I am convinced that the American Spirit is very much alive and perhaps reinvigorated as a result of this tragedy. I am, however, also cautious about our rebound. Before we rebound to the point of whiplash we need to spend some time thinking about all that we have learned and how we can apply this newly gained knowledge to continue to bless and benefit those around us. I am convinced, economically speaking, we will be more open to “out of the box” opportunities to recover and build our economic strength. We will eventually stop wondering when and where the next government check will come. Looking forward; I am excited to see the citizens of rural Utah develop new opportunities to work
with the citizens of the Wasatch Front to economically lift the entire state. Remember; a rising tide lifts all boats, much like a rising economy lifts all residents of Utah. Rural Utah has many assets. Some assets are known and some are yet to be discovered. I ask that you take an inventory of the assets you have available to you and develop a plan to leverage those assets into a brighter future. The sheep farmers that invited me to help them load sheep embody the discipleship of independence and charity. They are not sitting down and demanding the federal government or the state government rescue them. They are about the business of rescuing others. In return they are rescuing themselves. Going forward may we all look for ways to lift each other’s spirit and economic burdens, and not worry about who is going to rescue us or whose fault the virus is or who is going to pay for this deep economic dive. As devastating as this pandemic has been to many businesses it could have been much worse if a blind eye had been turned to the Corona…virus. Steven Lund Sanpete County Commissioner

Wasatch Academy: Let it endure like the Wasatch mountains Wasatch Academy is a school that has endured and is like no other. Its history is a story of unflagging persistence and tenacity that started with one determined man with a vision, courage, and conviction. When Dr. Duncan James McMillian, a Presbyterian minister and teacher, found his way to Sanpete County in March of 1875, he met opposition from the local community and nearly went back to Salt Lake City. Fortunately, he was befriended by a group of local citizens who convinced him to start a school to educate their children. They sold him a recently built social center, called Liberal Hall, which he converted into a school and Presbyterian Church. By April of that year,
Wasatch Academy was born! Years later, in the early 1970s, the Presbyterian Church Board of Missions determined that it could no longer support the school, and Wasatch Academy nearly shut its doors. The head of the Mission Advisory Committee, which was created to review the use of church mission funds, initially recommended closing the school. But after meeting with Superintendent Roger Hansen and becoming convinced of the viability of the school mission and understanding its uniqueness and outstanding benefit to a distinct minority group of students, she changed her mind and developed a plan to convert Wasatch Academy to an independent school.
Transitions are tough and this was especially true for Wasatch Academy, but with the help of a dedicated Board of Trustees and donations from trustees, alumni, faculty, parents, and foundations, Wasatch Academy not only survived this upheaval but flourished and has become a school that provides quality education, has cutting-edge technologies, state-of-the-art facilities, devoted teachers and staff, and serves a global community of students with diverse and intriguing backgrounds, religions, and cultures. Since 1875, Wasatch Academy has been graduating young men and women of outstanding character, dependability, creativity, and global appreciation. June 17, 2020
