We are all mindful that many have been hit hard during the pandemic of 2020 as businesses are shuttered and unemployment rises to historic levels. Amidst the hardship and challenges for businesses and families during this time come important lessons and opportunities also. Among the interruptions to commerce and normal daily life and the uncertainty this brings for many comes a greater appreciation for a myriad of simple things that we may have taken for granted before. More gratitude can be felt for stocked shelves in stores, for teachers and education, for healthcare professionals, and for the ability to gather and meet freely with friends, family, business associates and clients. Chamber President’s Message While I was growing up, one of my biggest heroes was – and still is today – my mom. She was an accountant by trade and worked for the local college. Often after work she would say, “I am going to help some friends with their accounts, books and financials.” She did not get paid to do this; she did this because she enjoyed what she did and believed in helping her friends and business community. I have taken away many valuable lessons from those words. The Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce has a strong heritage and strong partnerships and believes in building a better business community through these same principles and being a key player in our communities. This year has been challenging one for our business community and residents with the onset of COVID-19. Our first thoughts were of you, your businesses and your families. Pleasant Grove Mayor’s Message Life in Pleasant Grove has been much different during the last several months. With the state-mandated shutdowns brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen our local businesses cease operations, our city building close to the public, and our recreation programs be canceled or postponed. Our library has reduced its services to curbside pickup of books and materials, and the opening of the city pool may be pushed back or it may operate under different rules. We were saddened when we determined we would be unable to continue with our annual Memorial Day services. The closure of businesses unfortunately means the city will likely experience some business closures. We hope for the best for our local business people. The closures also mean a decrease in sales tax revenue; overall, the city is estimating that it’s revenue for the current fiscal year will be down at least $1 million over the prior year, meaning future city programs and services could be impacted.

With all this difficulty and disappointment, however, I believe Pleasant Grove and its residents will be able to make it through this time. The key will be to have a lot of patience. I am encouraged by the unique character of our city. Pleasant Grove is a place where residents are eager to help each other. I am confident that as we emerge from this quarantine, residents will come forward to help each other in whatever way they can. As a city, we are eager to get our recreational programs up and running again as soon as possible; these opportunities are important for the well-being of both children and adults. There will be a Strawberry Days celebration held with an adjusted schedule. We are also considering expanding the annual Heritage Days celebration in September. The 2020 Miss Pleasant Grove competition had to be canceled, but 2019 Miss Pleasant Grove Brooklin Allen has agreed to continue her service for another year, and we thank her for that. The rec center has opened with

restrictions, and we hope to have the library open to the public again soon. It’s a difficult time and an unprecedented challenge, but Pleasant Grove – through patience and hard work – will get through it. We believe in our community, and we thank you for your support. Little Miss 2020 Each year, a competition is held to name five young women in our community to the title of Little Miss Strawberry Days. These young women work together with the Miss Pleasant Grove Royalty to serve in our community. The highlight for all of them is Strawberry Days week. They participate in all the events, but favorites include the concert in the park, the princess party, the rodeo and the grand parade. To qualify, contestant submits a handwritten, a one-page essay about the theme, which varies from year to year. It is judged by an independent panel of judges based on attention to the theme, originality and creativity. The contestant must write the essay herself. Out of the many submissions, the five young women are chosen. Due to the onset of COVID-19, a Little Miss Strawberry Days competition was not held this year. The young women who served in 2019 have generously agreed to continue serving in their positions until the 2021 Little Miss Strawber-

New School Construction Historic Central Elementary entering the future Pleasant Grove’s fourth school building to be named Central Elementary School is nearly complete, and while the name recalls a rich history, the new building is encouraging students and the community to look to the future. The new Central Elementary, located at 95 N. 400 East, will open this fall as Alpine School District’s first school with solar panels on the roof and geothermal heating, said Ryan Wells, the school’s principal. Built in an open area adjacent to the old Central Elementary — which has since been torn down — the new school will include other cutting-edge technologies as well. Wells said the new school will be bigger than the former building but have the same number of classrooms. The increase in square footage is due to what are possibly the most anticipated features of the new school: the new Christa McAuliffe Space Center and what will be the second-largest planetarium in Utah. The space center has operated at Central Elementary since 1990. The center runs simulated space missions where visitors go aboard a “spaceship” and are assigned duties to perform such as helm control, communications, security or even serving as captain. The offstage space center staff members present a mission objective to the participants, who must then work together to try and achieve their goal.

“It’s an open world in that the choices you make in the ship actually affect it,” Porter said. “You’re not watching a movie, you’re involved and you have consequences for your decisions.” As result, no simulated mission is identical to another. Crews may complete their goals, or they may blow up their ship; it all depends on their decisions. Through the experience, participants learn about cooperation, critical thinking and creativity. Hundreds of thousands of students have visited the space center on field trips since its opening. Many families and business groups have also rented the space center over the years and gone on their own missions. The former space center was created in existing classrooms, meaning visitors had to walk through the school to reach the center. With the new school, the center will have its own entrance. “Once you’ve stepped through the doors, everything is going to look like the space center,” said Space Center

New School Construction Director James Porter. “You’re going to step into the future.” The new center will feature six simulators; the old center had four. Building the center from scratch allowed designers to create many more ways staff members can enhance the mission experience, Porter said. For example, the simulators will now be able to communicate with each other, allowing multiple crews in multiple ships to work together during a single mission. Staff will also have control over the lighting levels, the sound, the computer touch screens — even the temperature in the room. Those flying too close to a sun will feel the heat. Porter said going from the old space center to the new center will be like staff members had one hand tied behind their backs and then suddenly had that obstacle removed. “Now they have both hands and they’re going to be able to tell some amazing stories,” he said. A music soundtrack has been recorded specifically for the new space center and will be available for purchase on iTunes or at spacecenter.alpineschools.org. Porter said the new planetarium is being created by Evans and Sutherland, one of the leading producers of planetariums. The facility will offer shows both as part of student field trips and in the evenings and on weekends for the public. Unlike the traditional planetarium show where the audience sits and watches, however, the space center plans to offer interactive shows where visitors will be more engaged

in learning about the universe. Scheduling for field trips and private group visits to the center will begin in August, Porter said. Central Elementary is currently collecting artifacts and stories related to the school’s history for display in the new school. Miss Pleasant Grove Miss Pleasant Grove 2019/2020: Brooklin Allen 2019 Miss Pleasant Grove Brooklin Allen will continue to serve the community through 2020 and until the 2021 Miss Pleasant Grove competition following cancellation of the 2020 Miss Pleasant Grove, Miss Utah and Miss America competitions due to the impact of COVID-19. Contestants who were preparing for the Pleasant Grove 2020 competition will aid Allen in her duties in the coming months. Contestants were also given a scholarship recognizing them for the work they had already put in while preparing for the 2020 program. Allen graduated with honors from Pleasant Grove High School where she was the Dance Sterling Scholar. She danced for four years on the drill team, serving as a captain and spirit officer. One of her greatest loves was teaching dance to her special needs dance class, which she did for three years. Currently, she teaches students at The Dance Conservatory in Pleasant Grove. She is currently a sophomore at Brigham Young University studying psychology. Allen is passionate about her social impact initiative, titled “The Ripple Effect,” and has spent countless hours this past year sharing its message, which focuses on spreading kindness,

positivity and hope both online and offline. She believes in the power of kindness and that the smallest acts of kindness make the biggest difference and bring positivity and hope into the lives of others. She has spent the past year teaching and inspiring students in elementary, junior high and high schools about the impact intentional acts of kindness can have in their lives and in the lives of others. She has worked hand-in-hand with the Kindness Clubs and Hope Squads in Pleasant Grove, bringing hope and spreading kindness to students, children and adults as well as residents in care centers and children and patients in 18 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals around the nation. She has raised $10,300 for Children’s Miracle Network and Miss America Organization scholarships as well as more than $12,000 in sponsors and donations for “The Ripple Effect” service projects and assemblies. Employee Recognition Pleasant Grove City 2019 Employee of the Year: Ria Hanna Ria Hanna, office manager for the Pleasant Grove City Public Works Department, has been named Pleasant Grove City’s 2019 Employee of the Year. Hanna began working for Pleasant Grove City in March of 2018 after spending 17 years working as office manager at Maywood Mutual Water Co. #1. She has always worked in an office setting with her duties including customer service. Her first job was a part-time position working for a print shop taking and processing orders while she was in high school. She was born and raised in the heart of Los Angeles, California, and lived in Orange County, California, before moving to Utah. She earned her associate’s degree in business administration at the National Education Center and earned her Water Distribution Certification from Citrus College. Hanna said she loves getting to know the people she works with and the members of the public she works for. Comments from other city employees on their forms nominating Hanna for recognition include, “Ria is the glue that keeps the office running at Public Works,” “She makes you feel like you matter,” “She is so positive and takes ownership for everything she does,” and, “Ria is a perfect example of what it means to become team member of the year.” “Ria has been a great addition to our department,” said Marty Beaumont, director of Public Works. “She really goes the extra mile to make everything run smoothly around the office and is always super courteous to those she is helping.”

Community Improvments Volunteers rediscover Pleasant Grove’s Discovery Park Originally constructed more than 23 years ago, Discovery Park in Pleasant Grove has been a popular attraction in Utah County. The unique design and features of the park made it a draw for many children and parents. After 23 years of heavy use and exposure to the elements, the park was in need of repair, and a group of Pleasant Grove residents volunteered their time to create a steering committee to rebuild Discovery Park. The theme of the rebuild was Rediscover Discovery Park. The vision was to use volunteer labor and cash donations from the community to lessen the taxpayer burden to build a playground that covered about one acre. Committees were formed to recruit volunteers, raise cash donations, engage the business community, locate tools, provide child care for the volunteers and feed the volunteers as they worked on the park. These committees spent months planning in preparation for the actual 10 days of building the playground. The overall goal was to build community pride and let the citizens have ownership in a park that they built. The new Discovery Park was constructed between May 3 and May 13, 2019. The work days were from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. More than 3,000 volunteers helped during this time period. Even though there was inclement weather at times, numerous people were determined to get this project done. The

volunteer labor saved the city more than $400,000 in labor costs. The Pleasant Grove Parks Department and key volunteers (called Captains) were helping every day, all day. They helped manage the volunteers and kept the project moving forward. Their contributions were critical to the success of the project. Normally a project of this size would have cost Pleasant Grove City $1.2 million to construct. Because of the volunteer labor, donations (cash and in-kind) and a Utah County grant, the project cost Pleasant Grove citizens about $400,000. There were about 50 different sponsors that gave donations and more than 400 pickets sold at $75 apiece as part of the fundraising efforts. When the original Discovery Park was built 23 years ago, a seed was planted of community ownership and pride. Now, 23 years later, a new generation has planted its own seeds and basked in the fruits of its labors. Eventually, the current generation of children on the playground will have its opportunity to give back like those that have given before them.

Learning by Doing Student becomes PG mayor’s first high school intern When Pleasant Grove High School senior Brigham Dunford signed up for a class that placed PG High students as interns at local businesses, he didn’t see the type of job he was looking for on the list of available internships. So, he went to the Pleasant Grove City offices and asked if there were any internship opportunities with the mayor. “For the longest time, I’ve wanted to go into politics or law or something that I could do concerning local government,” Dunford said. In response to his inquiry, city staff said the city had worked with college interns before, but not a high schooler — and gave him the mayor’s email address. The two exchanged emails, met for an interview and Dunford was taken on as the mayor’s first intern. “It was a great experience,” said Pleasant Grove Mayor Guy Fugal. After spending the first few weeks of the 2019-2020 school year in class with other students learning about working in a professional environment, Dunford began his work at the city. “As soon as we had all the training for the class, as soon as I was released by the class period to go down to city hall, he (the mayor) really put me right to work,” Dunford said. Fugal said Dunford worked in the city offices from about 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. a few times a week. One of his main duties was performing research for the mayor on a variety of topics. He also wrote articles with assistance from the mayor that ran in the Daily Herald. Dunford did research on recycling and how other cities handled their recycling programs. He also looked at Utah cities who have a bubble over their community pool and obtained cost information for the mayor. “It worked out really well because he’s a swimmer, and so he was all over that,” Fugal said. Another project had Dunford researching the budget information of other cities, including their utility rates and sales and property tax revenue. He found it interesting that American Fork has double the budget of Pleasant Grove, but Pleasant Grove has 10,000 more residents than American Fork. “The reason for that is they have many more businesses,”

Dunford said. “It was very interesting to see how other cities were doing.” Dunford also attended city council meetings and work sessions. “He was basically shadowing me,” Fugal said. “and every four weeks we’d go to lunch.” One of the best meetings he went to was the city’s annual budget retreat, Dunford said. At the meeting, he was able to talk with city department heads about their upcoming projects and hear about their budgets for the coming year. “It was a really, really cool experience,” he said. The plan was to have Dunford continue his internship throughout the entire school year, but the COVID-19 pandemic brought it to an end early when the schools and the city offices were shut down. However, his time at the city has him even more convinced that he would like to somehow be involved in city operations in the future. “It’s been really eye-opening,” Dunford said. “As a teenager, there’s a lot of rumors and speculation that are sometimes not based on good information, and it’s really good to talk with my peers and say this is what’s really going on.” Dunford has now graduated from PGHS and been accepted to attend Brigham Young University, but he will first serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Phoenix, Arizona, speaking French. He is considering studying in either political science or law. He said being able to work with the mayor and city department heads has given him a lot of experience in how to work with large projects and run a city. “It’s got to be one of the best high school experiences I’ve had,” Dunford said.

PG Cares Program to address problems of addiction, abuse, suicide With a goal to educate residents about issues such as abuse, addiction and suicide as well as link them to available resources, Pleasant Grove City has adopted a prevention program utilized by cities across the nation. Called Communities that Care, the program utilizes prevention efforts and science to promote healthy youth development, improve youth outcomes and reduce problem behaviors, according to the CTC website. “CTC helps communities prevent problems before they develop. Many see dramatic reductions in levels of youth alcohol and tobacco use and crime and violence,” states the website. Tamara Oborn has been hired to act as coordinator of the Pleasant Grove program, which is called PG Cares, a Communities that Care Coalition. She said participating cities are able to customize the CTC program to address their own local challenges. “We get to assess our own needs,” Oborn said. “We get statistics for Pleasant Grove specifically and then take those and make goals based on what our kids are struggling with.” While the CTC program itself has been operating for decades, Pleasant Grove’s program is new, having been adopted about three months ago. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down organization efforts, but Oborn said a leadership board is being assembled to oversee PG Cares

along with a community board that will be central to organizing and performing volunteer work when PG Cares begins hosting community programs and events. PG Cares has a social media presence on Facebook and Instagram through which it has been promoting prescription drugs education and disseminating other information. Free suicide prevention training courses that have been offered through the city for about a year are now offered through PG Cares and have continued via online Zoom meetings. PG Cares also recently received a $5,600 grant from the state to implement an EveryDay Strong campaign, a United Way program that addresses anxiety and depression in youth. A big part of PG Cares will be partnering with the many organizations that exist to provide help for people struggling with issues such as addiction or suicide and then connecting residents with the services and help they provide, Oborn said. Volunteers are being sought to help with PG Cares efforts. Those interested may contact Oborn at toborn@pgcity. org.

Business Candy company relocates to new facility in Lindon A candy company that serves customers throughout the nation while providing Utahns with some of their favorite chocolate truffles has moved its operations to Lindon. Candyco, owners of Utah Truffles, Mrs. Calls Candy Company and Surge Chocolates, completed a new 120,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in August of 2019 at 64 N. 1550 West, Lindon. Equipment from its former location in Heber City was moved to Lindon during January and February and the company is now operating fully out of its new facility. “We’re looking forward to introducing new products and to growing our product line and our customer base and being an excellent employer for the city and the county and the state,” said Devin Bybee, president of Candyco. Candyco was founded by Bybee and his partner Scott Maxfield. The two met while both were working toward a master’s of business administration degree at Brigham Young University. The two became friends and decided that instead of finding jobs after their schooling, they wanted to either start a business together or purchase one. The pair spent time driving through industrial centers looking for businesses on the market and even did some cold calling to ask if owners were interested in selling. “Then we came across a classified ad for a candy

store,” Bybee said. Named Mrs. Call’s Candy Company, the business produced caramels and was located in a 5,000-square-foot facility in Heber City with a store in the front and a manufacturing facility in the back. Bybee said he and Maxfield fell in love with the product and felt they could grow the business. Over the next few years, they introduced chocolate to their lineup and began producing new products such as sea salt caramels, chocolate barks and nut clusters. They also began producing candy for other businesses that then put their own labels on the treats. Candyco currently produces private label products for some of the biggest retailers in the nation. The business quickly outgrew its 5,000 square feet and built a new 18,000-square-foot building in Heber City. New manufacturing lines were added and the business’s offerings expanded, leading to the need for an addition on the new building that increased its space to 33,000 square feet. “That’s about the same time we got into the truffle business,” Bybee said. Candyco was looking for ways to expand its chocolate offerings, and Bybee and Maxfield were friends with the owners of Utah Truffles. “They were looking to move on from chocolate and asked us if there was interest in us buying it, and there

Candyco employs between 150 and 200 people. “We needed more space for growth and to bring our capacity and manufacturing lines up to the 21st century,” Bybee said. Suitable land was found in Lindon and the new facility constructed. Finishing touches were being completed on the building as new equipment shipped in from Germany arrived and was installed. “It was really a race against the clock because we had millions of dollars of orders on the line,” Bybee said. Production continued in Heber City until the new equipment was up and running in Lindon. Then, most of the equipment in Heber City was moved to Lindon while the rest was sold. Candyco is still producing all the products it made in Heber City. It is also the owner of Surge Chocolates, a line IL DA
