R
emember the 1980s? It was the “Me� generation. Phraseology like “shop ’til you drop� and “totally awesome� were coined. Moms stood in endless lines for the last Cabbage Patch doll and teens were watching movies by John Hughes and dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.� The world was changing drastically. The Berlin Wall fell, students were massacred in China’s Tiananmen Square. The space shuttle Challenger exploded above the Earth and Chernobyl’s nuclear power plant exploded on the Earth. It was the days of Glasnost and Perestroika. Ronald Reagan was in the White House and in Utah The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mourned the loss of its beloved President Spencer W. Kimball, and sustained Ezra Taft Benson as the 13th president, prophet, seer and revelator of the church. Born on a farm in Whitney, Idaho, President Benson was prepared for his calling through years of church service and service to his country as he walked and counseled with both presidents and paupers. He served as Secretary of Agriculture for eight years on President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s cabinet, and became an expert on the Constitution. His life experiences, his faith and his prophetic calling moved him to speak with exactness and clarity on what was important. Even today many remember his talks on the Constitution, reading the Book of Ezra Taft Benson

Mormon and pride. President Benson’s early life was spent primarily on the family farm. It was hard work but a great place for a boy to grow up with his father by his side. That is until the day his father got an unexpected letter from Salt Lake City. “I was about 13 years of age when my father received a call to go on a mission,” Benson said. “It was during an epidemic in our little community of Whitney, Idaho. Parents were encouraged to go to sacrament meeting, but the children were to remain home to avoid contracting the disease.” After church, the general store would open for folks

struggle against someone in authority over us. It can be a parent, a priesthood leader, a teacher, or ultimately God. A proud person hates the fact that someone is above him. He thinks this lowers his position. “Selfishness is one of the more common faces of pride. ‘How everything affects me’ is the center of all that matters — self-conceit, selfpity, worldly self-fulfillment, self-gratification and selfseeking,” Benson said. He asked members of the church to choose to be humble and gave them ways to overcome pride. • We can choose to humble ourselves by conquering enmity toward our brothers and sisters, esteeming them as ourselves, and lifting them as high or higher than we are. • We can choose to humble ourselves by receiving counsel and chastisement. • We can choose to humble ourselves by forgiving those who have offended us. • We can choose to humble ourselves by rendering selfless service. • We can choose to humble ourselves by going on missions and preaching the word that can humble others. • We can choose to humble ourselves by getting to the temple more frequently. • We can choose to humble ourselves by confessing and forsaking our sins and being born of God. • We can choose to humble ourselves by loving God, submitting our will to His, and putting Him first in our lives. “Let us choose to be humble,” Benson said. “We can do it. I know we can.” His message was important in the 1980s. His words were prophetic for our day as the pride cycle continues. Members might ask in 2014, “Is he speaking to me?”

I
n stark contrast to the Great Depression of the 1930s, the economy of the United States in the 1990s was experiencing an unprecedented boom. The stock market was soaring, jobs were being created, inflation was low and the country’s gross domestic product or net value (GDP) was experiencing the longest recorded expansion in the country’s history. With such economic prosperity, it’s no wonder many people were taking advantage of the climate, investing and borrowing, going into debt, confident the market was stable. It was in this climate of apparent financial stability that the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the time, Gordon B. Hinckley, gave what could be considered truly prophetic counsel. After an address in the General Conference of the church on the importance of keeping covenants, overcoming temptation and serving a faithful mission, President Hinckley shifted his focus to very seriously address financial matters. The talk, titled “To the Boys and to the Men,â€? was given in October 1998. “Now, brethren, I want to make it very clear that I am not prophesying, that I am not predicting years of famine in the future,â€? he said. “But I am suggesting that the time has come to get our houses in order. So many of our people are living on the very edge of their incomes. In fact, some are living on borrowings. We have witnessed in recent weeks wide and fearsome swings in the markets of the world. The economy is a fragile thing. ‌ There is a portent of stormy weather ahead to which we had better give heed.â€? “In 1998, it was really a period in Gordon B. Hinckley

which the stock prices were increasing significantly,” said Norm Nemrow, a former accounting professor at Brigham Young University in regard to the financial climate of the day. “People were feeling so good about everything, feeling their financial futures were kind of assured … then in the early 2000s, it just collapsed. That really shook the economy and people’s trust. I think [that talk] was kind of a forewarning that there were potentially rough times ahead that most people weren’t really anticipating.” Nemrow received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accountancy at Brigham Young University before instructing there for more than 16 years and said he could recall that time in the economy. As he mentioned, just a few years after Hinckley’s address on finance, the country’s financial state changed dramatically, causing turmoil for many deeply vested in the economy, and a reason to be grateful for those who heeded the prophetic counsel. This kind of pattern — prosperity to turbulence and back again — is actually quite common, according to Brian Boyer, associate professor of finance at BYU’s Marriott School of Management, making Hinckley’s counsel even more on target. “The point is that financial and economic crises have ever been present in our history, yet we seem to forget so quickly,” said Boyer, who interned at the Federal Reserve in Washington D.C., just months prior to Hinkley’s conference talk. “Crises have a way of kindling a sense of humility. Yet, often as
soon as the unemployment rate starts to go down and GDP growth begins to recover we forget and begin to live beyond our means once again. The advice of President Hinckley to get out of debt and release ourselves from bondage is timely no matter what stage of the business cycle we’re in.” Hinckley’s address went far beyond just a timely forewarning to members, however, detailing exactly how dangerous debt could be. “I am troubled by the huge consumer installment debt which hangs over the people of the nation, including our own people,” President Hinckley said. “Everyone knows that every dollar borrowed carries with it the penalty of paying interest. When money cannot be repaid, then bankruptcy follows.” According to data from the Federal Reserve, Hinckley’s counsel was not only applicable then, but can still apply to perilous financial times today, especially as national and consumer debt continues to rise, and many fall into the trap caused by high interest rates and instant gratification. “President Hinckley’s remarks convey a seasoned perspective immune to the winds and tides of current economic conditions and the comparative material wealth of others,” Boyer said. “In that sense, they are way ahead of the times ... times in which the economic decisions of so many appear to be completely driven by myopic attempts to keep up with the Joneses. … It is
so tempting to attach our selfworth to how much we own relative to others. Consumer debt is so easily obtained in efforts
to compete materially, but often carries some of the highest interest rates. We need to learn patience and understand that we can live meaningful, happy lives without having to engage in such meaningless competitions.” In conclusion, Hinckley counseled members to set their
houses in order, pay off debts then work toward having a reserve. “I urge you ... to look to the condition of your finances,” he said. “I urge you to be modest in your expenditures; discipline yourselves in your purchases to avoid debt to the extent possible. Pay off debt as quickly as you can, and free yourselves from bondage. This is a part of the temporal gospel in which we believe. … If you have paid your debts, if you have a reserve, even though it be small, then should storms howl about your head, you will have shelter for your wives and children and peace in your hearts.” Though Hinckley’s counsel came ahead of its time and helped Continued on Page 12 many

face the challenges without fear. Another great advantage of being out of debt is that it just gives you so much more flexibility in terms of making decisions about your future. It frees you, not only from worry, but it allows you to take advantage of opportunities that come around in life.”

preferred method. The other, less-desirable graduation occurs on your 31st birthday when you no longer fit within the 18 to 31 age requirements.

It was just after my 30th birthday when I opted for an early graduation from my singles ward in St. George. Having attended the ward for the previous six years, my fellow congregation members had become my second family. Together we enjoyed countless barbecues, dozens of pool parties, fun-filled road trips, spur-of-the-moment camping adventures, movie marathons, karaoke nights and even Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. It was a great family to be a part of. As I was approaching my unceremonious graduation, however, I began to realize just how large my second family had become. There were nearly 400 members in that singles ward, with a solid 200 or so members attending meetings and activities regularly. The chapel overflow was constantly overflowing as new members throughout all of Washington County were introduced to the ward each week. Watching the expansion of the ward and struggling to find my own comfortable niche within the masses, I knew it was time for me to advance on to my home ward. I would still be able to attend activities and drop in on occasional Sunday meetings, but when it came to my primary spiritual guidance, I was happily surprised to find solace in a family ward. Why was that singles ward so enormous? Why were there still so many
unmarried men and women in their late-20s and early30s attending? While there were several possible theories why so many successful, attractive, eligible men and women were still seeking eternal companions, it was a simple two-word term, spoken by Elder Dallin H. Oaks during a 2005 young adult fireside, that struck a chord with many single saints: Hanging out. “Dating has nearly disappeared from college campuses and among young adults generally,” Elder Oaks said in the Church Educational System fireside telecast from Oakland, Calif. “It has been replaced by something called ‘hanging out.’ ” As Elder Oaks succinctly described, hanging out consists of men and women joining together in group activities, often avoiding dating. “It is very different from dating. ... Dating is not a team sport. Dating is pairing off to experience the kind of one-on-one association and temporary commitment that can lead to marriage in some rare and treasured cases.” The days of teenage group dates are long gone once you reach adulthood, he said. Hanging out was extremely common among my large circle of friends in St. George. Sure there were quite a few couples who managed to break the mold, separating themselves from the group mentality to enjoy a healthy dating lifestyle. Invariably those wise souls
who took the time to commit to dating did, in fact, graduate from the ward with a blessed wedding. Why is hanging out so popular? Hanging out is easy.

or dating services — two alternatives that can be very dangerous or at least unnecessary or ineffective,” he said. While some of his talk seemed to be targeted to men, Oaks did direct a portion of the evening to young women as well, suggesting that they make the idea of hanging out far too easy. “Young women, resist too much hanging out, and encourage dates that are simple, inexpensive and frequent. Don’t make it easy for young men to hang out in a setting where you women provide the food,” he said. “Don’t subsidize freeloaders. ... I think you should lock the pantry and bolt the front door. “If you do this, you should also hang up a sign, ‘Will open for individual dates.’ ” After first reading Elder Oaks’ talk back in 2005, I realized I was one of those young women who made it far too easy for guys to avoid dating. My pantry was always open with a warm batch of banana bread or pan of homemade lasagna and my home was always the perfect place for game night
or the latest DVD release. It was clear I had fallen into the dreaded hang out trap. It wasn’t until I actually moved to northern Utah, exploring a new career and social circles, that I was able to better break free from that trap and truly experience the crazy emotional ups and downs of dating, ultimately finding my perfect match in 2010. Even though Elder Oaks’ “Dating Versus Hanging Out” talk was given nearly 10 years ago, the hang out trap is still prevalent, as evidenced by more and more single and mid-single adult wards being organized throughout Utah, two of which are now in Utah Valley — the Oak Hills 8th Ward in Provo, the mid-singlefriendly Orem YSA 31st Ward, and now one in Lehi. As Elder Oaks so perfectly reminded all the single LDS saints, we have been counseled to “channel your associations with the opposite sex into dating patterns that have the potential to mature into marriage, not hangingout patterns that only have the prospect to mature into team sports like touch football. Marriage is not a group activity.”
