Sanpete County Fair 2018 “One Grand Celebration!” What a busy year this has been! At the completion of last year’s fair, construction on our new grandstand began. The first phase of our project is complete. You will be happy to know that our new arena is done, and our seating is complete. We now have the capacity to have a crowd twice the size of what we have had in the past. Our new grandstand is entirely reserved seating, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) seating is phenomenal and complete with a wheelchair ramp and wheelchair seating which is also reserved. The south side seating is all general admission as well as the small wing bleachers to the east and west. Attendees will find that there is not a bad seat in the house! Plenty of room for everyone. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all those who have worked tirelessly at completing phase one, and thank the people and businesses that have donated to this project. We have made great strides at your fairgrounds and will strive to move forward with phase two, which will include new concessions and restrooms. The relationships that we have built in reaching this common goal have been outstanding. Sanpete County is full of great businessmen and volunteers. I feel privileged to work with all of you. There are a couple of schedule changes to note, the change of days for the Fireman’s Challenge and the Jr. Rodeo. This year the Fireman’s Challenge will be held on Tuesday evening of fair week. The challenge is organized and run by our Jr. Fair Board. The Jr. Fair Board members have been responsible for all the fundraising and challenges during the event. I thank all of you who have been working with the Jr. Fair Board, it is a great experience for them. Next, the Jr. Rodeo has moved to the Saturday before fair week. This is a super fun event for the kids to get their own rodeo. Registration for the Jr. Rodeo is required, so make sure to check out the schedule for the day and time to register. Fair tickets are available online at www.sanpetecountyfair.net. If tickets are purchased online, the tickets will be mailed to purchasers. There will be no will-call.
Tickets will also be available at the following ticket outlets Monday, Aug. 6 through Noon on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at Rasmussen Ace Hardware, Gunnison; Sanpete Building Inspector Office, Manti; Jorgensen Chevrolet, Ephraim; Farmers Floral, Mt. Pleasant. The ticket booth in the fairgrounds will also be open Tuesday – Friday, Aug. 7-10 and 14-17, from 4 to 8 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 11, from 12 noon – 4 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 18, during events. The fair board and I extend an open invitation to come out, enjoy and participate in the fair. A grand celebration with parade Grand Marshal Roth Ilene Roth, Manti, has been chosen to be the grand marshal for the Sanpete County Fair Parade at 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 25, in Manti. Ilene was born in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Thomas and Afton Brothersen. She has four children, Rusty (Sharanadee) Braithwaite; Tammy Braithwaite, Cody (Amber) Braithwaite; and Wyatt (Lindsay) Frischknecht. Her children and grandchildren love living in Manti. For Roth, living in Sanpete County, experiencing the smell of fresh cut hay, watching the livestock graze in the pastures, traveling up to the mountains for camping these are things her family enjoys each year. Summertime is her favorite time of the year. Roth loves working in the yard, harvesting a wonderful garden and having roasted marshmallows over a camp fire. The Sanpete County Fair is a celebration she loves to attend. The 4H program was a highlight in Roth’s youth. She would bring crafts, foods or projects to display and couldn’t wait to see what ribbons were received. Roth still enjoys the local talents each year at the exhibition building, along with the rodeo, horse pulls, derby, animal barns, car show and parade. She has loved being involved in the fair and helping with the fair book. In the past, Roth admired Carole Mellor and her amazing ability to get everyone all excited about the new fair book. Her family couldn’t wait to see it and guess the mystery person. This year Roth is excited to see the improvements at the fairgrounds. Ilene’s life changed when she married Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. Ed was a custom car builder and the creator of Rat Fink. She attended her first car show with Ed in the Superdome in New Orleans, LA. That car show was her first glimpse of the Rat Fink creations, models of Ed’s cars, pin striping, custom painting in a booth and her first realization that there are hundreds of Rat Fink fans. Every show that Ilene attended with Ed was a special event. The two of them were able to visit with so many fun people and had a beautiful life of meeting artists, car builders and traveling worldwide to attend shows. She found that her new life was mixed up in an amazing whirlwind of fun and work. Unfortunately, Ed passed away in 2001. Since then,

Ilene has continued with the Rat Fink legacy. She and her family have hosted the Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s Annual Rat Fink Reunion each year in Manti. This year, all the Rat Fink fans and family celebrated the 16th Rat Fink Reunion in June. There were over 60 artists that created art for the three-day event. During the event, the 5k fun run was well attended. The reunion’s car show was a grand event, bringing cars from as far away as Michigan, Florida, Kentucky and See MARSHAL, page 15

“One Grand Celebration” kicks off 2018 county fair Sanpete County Fair’s “One Grand Celebration” kicks off in a new grandstand capable of handling twice as many spectators this year. The old grandstand is long gone now and it’s time to celebrate the whole new look of the fairgrounds. Friday, Aug. 3 It all begins when the Miss Sanpete County Scholarship and the Miss Sanpete County Outstanding Teen pageants both take place Friday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m., at Manti High School, 100 West 500 North. Saturday, Aug. 4 All 4-H Fair exhibits must be entered in the online system. Friday, Aug. 10 The deadline to pre-register for the Open Horse Show is 7 p.m. on this day. Call Lynsey Zeeman (307) 8719030. Thursday, Aug. 16 Contestants who wish to participate in the rodeo may call the RMPRA office today at (719) 486-0599 between 1 and 7 p.m. to register or register online at www.rmpraonline.com. At 4 p.m., the 4-H Horse Show registration will take place with the horse show test at 4:30 p.m., and the actual horse show begins at 5 p.m., in the fairgrounds arena. Saturday, Aug. 18 The Sanpete County Open Horse Show will begin at 10 a.m., with the books closing at 9:30 a.m. At the Exhibit Building, 4-H entries will be accepted 1-4 pm, and Open entries accepted 1-5 pm. Signups and the competition for everyone’s favorite event, the Dutch Oven Cook-Off, begins at 2 p.m. This year, it’s the “Battle of the Beans” and contestants will be making green (chili verde), red chili, corn bread, or all three. Sign-up at the pavilion. Judging will begin at 4:30 p.m., with sample plates for sale at 5 p.m., at the pavilion. At 6 p.m., the Junior Rodeo will take place, so head on over to the arena and watch these up-and-coming cowboys strut their stuff. Participants must register in advance on Aug. 5, from 6-9 p.m., To register, call Zane Osborn at (801) 376-6973 or Belinda Osborn at (801) 376-6256. Sunday, Aug. 19 Hometown hide race entries for the rodeo will be 12

accepted from 6 to 9 p.m. by calling Dell Jensen at (435) 469-0296. Monday, Aug. 20 Open Class baked goods and fresh produce will be accepted at the Exhibit Building from 3 to 6 p.m. No floral entries will be accepted at that time. Make sure entries are covered with plastic. At 5 p.m., the 4-H livestock barn set up and test will take place. Then at 7 p.m., the annual Cowboy Poetry event will be presented at Manti High School. Tickets are $10 per person. Tuesday, Aug. 21 4-H gardening and baked goods will be accepted at the Exhibit Building from 8 to 9 a.m. Then the building will be closed for judging. At 7 p.m. that evening, stick around to watch the Fireman’s Challenge organized by the Junior Fair Board. Wednesday, Aug.22 Open Class florals and plants will be accepted at the Exhibit Building from 9 to 11 a.m. The exhibit building will then be open from 2 to 7 p.m. From 5 to 7 p.m., weigh-in and receiving for lamb, goat, swine and market beef will take place. The Pee-Wee Motor Barrel Racing will take over the arena at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, livestock judging will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 It is expected that this will be a big day for the fair as it starts off with hog and sheep market classes, times to be announced. The Exhibit Building and small animal barn will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. At noon, small animal entries will be accepted along with small animal poster contest entries. That afternoon there will be goat, beef and open heifer market classes, times to be announced. Brown’s Amusements carnival midway will come alive at 4 p.m., along with Fun on the Farm and the Local Talent show. The talent show will perform at the pavilion until 6 p.m. Fun on the Farm opens from 4 until 7 p.m. A Cowboy Mounted Shooting exhibition is part of the rodeo pre-show and begins in the main arena at 6 p.m. The Rodeo Grand Entry will occur at 6:45 p.m. and the Rocky Mountain Pro Rodeo Association Broken Heart Rodeo Company at 7 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 24 The day begins at 8 a.m., when the small animal barn opens. During the day there will be hog, sheep, goat and beef showmanship classes, times to be announced. At 10 a.m., the dairy cattle and dairy goat shows will take place followed by the dairy showmanship classes. Also at that time is the rabbit, poultry and pigeon judging, which is open to the public. The Exhibit Building will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. At 2 p.m., the open class pet show will be held at the pavilion. Brown’s Amusements midway carnival will re-open at 3 p.m. A Round-Robin event for all grand and reserve showmanship placements will take place at the livestock barn, time to be announced. Local talent will entertain the crowds at the pavilion from 4 to 6 p.m. Fun on the Farm will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. The big event - the Demolition Derby, that everyone looks forward to - will begin with lots of noise, smoke and excitement in the new arena at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 The last day of the fair will be full of activities beginning with the Livestock Buyers Breakfast at 8 a.m. and the small animal barn will open. All entries for the Annual Car and Tractor Show will need to be turned in between 8 to 10 a.m. At 9 a.m., the ever-popular Mud Volleyball competition play-offs will take place at the pit. The event is limited to eight teams. For more information, contact Steve at 435-851-1152. The annual Sanpete County Junior Livestock Auction will take place at 10 a.m., at the show ring in the livestock barn. Also at that time the car and tractor show begins at 500 North Main, Manti. Local talent performances will take place at the pavilion from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. At 10:30 a.m., gather the kids and let them build something at the Rasmussen Ace Hardware Kid’s Workshop. At 11 a.m., the Exhibit Building will open and remain open until 8 p.m. Fun on the Farm will be open until 5 p.m. The Cattlemen’s Association Beef Feast will be held at 12 noon, at the pavilion. Cost is $10 per plate. The small animal awards will be presented. In addition, Brown’s Amusements midway and carnival will open. At 1 p.m., the horse pull competition will be held in the arena. At 2 p.m., the pie eating contest will be held in the pavilion. At 3:30 p.m., watch the kids, ages 3 to 10, dash for prizes in the Mud Scramble at the pit. Then at 4 p.m., the car show awards will be presented. The Mammoth Parade, with Grand Marshal Ilene

Area talents showcased in exhibit building The many talents of the people of Sanpete County will be on display in the exhibit building to see and enjoy beginning Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. Those who want to enter an exhibit can do so beginning Saturday Aug. 18, at 1 p.m. Exhibits range from fine arts (oil, watercolor, chalk, pencil art), string art, Legos, wood carving and burning, woodworking, leather work, crochet, sewing, cross stitch, porcelain dolls, ceramics, quilting, latch hook, furniture finishing, fresh flowers and potted plants, fresh fruits and vegetables from personal gardens, bottled goods, and more. All visitors to the exhibit building are encouraged to pick up a voting ballot at the front desk, choose their favorite exhibits and then turn in the completed ballot to help select which entry receives the People’s Choice exhibit award. Exhibit schedule Saturday, Aug. 18, 1-4 p.m., 4-H exhibit entries accepted. Also on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 1-5 p.m., Open Class entries will be accepted in the exhibit building. All entries except baked goods, fresh flowers and potted plants. Monday, Aug. 20, 3-6 p.m., Open Class baked goods and fresh produce accepted. Baked goods and produce must be on plates covered with plastic. Tuesday, Aug. 21, closed for judging. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 9-11 a.m., Open Class floral displays will be accepted. 12 noon-2 p.m., closed for judging floral displays. 2-7 p.m., Exhibit building open for public viewing. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23, 24 and 25, the exhibit building will be open to the public 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, 3-6 p.m., pick-up entries and ribbons. Entries must be picked up on this day. If an entry cannot be picked up, contact Sandi Schoppe at (435) 851-4322 or send someone to pick them up. Those entries not picked up, or previous arrangements made, will be discarded. Entry Rules All Sanpete County residents are encouraged to exhibit those items they have grown or created. When bringing an exhibit in for display, if there is no category for an entry, one will be made to accommodate the entry. Displayed photographs are limited to two per person. Quilts will be displayed on hanging racks which will show them beautifully and will help keep the quilts clean

North Carolina. Guests arrived from Mexico, Japan, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand and 22 of the United States. Of course everyone is encouraged to come the first weekend in June for next year’s reunion. But book rooms early, the fans love filling up the motels and restaurants during reunion weekend. Christmas is Ilene Roth’s favorite holiday. Visitors can find trees decorated in her home year round. She has enjoyed decorating the foyer in the Sanpete County Courthouse and the commissioner’s room with the help of her staff-best friends, Stacey and Suzaun. Roth enjoys working for Sanpete County, and will be retiring the end of this year. She will celebrate another new venture in her life, continuing full-time with her late husband Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s dream of Rat Fink. She greatly appreciates everyone for their friendship and support.

Prepare now for the annual pie-eating contest to be held Saturday, Aug. 25, at 2 p.m., in the fair pavilion. How fast can a cream pie be eaten with a person’s hands behind their back, no utensils and their face in the pie? Let’s find out if it is even possible without choking, getting covered with pie or snorting pie. There are three flavors to choose from, chocolate, banana or coconut. There are also three divisions, age 10 and under, 11 to 15; and 16 and older. Trophies will be awarded to first place winners in each division. The annual Fireman’s Challenge has been moved to a new day. The challenge will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 21. Fire departments throughout the county take part in this fun activity which draws a crowd.
Firemen get hosed during competition
Each year, fire crews from Sanpete communities are challenged to prove they have what it takes to handle the rigors of service while having fun in the process as part of the Fireman’s Challenge. It is one of the most crowd-pleasing events during the Sanpete County Fair. This year’s Fireman’s Challenge will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 21 All fire departments from around the valley are eligible to participate in the challenge and can take home cash prizes and trophies. What looks like fun and games to the public is, in reality, life-saving training. Teams participate in timed events and drills. Some involve a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), an interactive event that will not only 20

entertain but also educate spectators with the hope of encouraging more people to volunteer for local fire departments. Events are relay type, many of which showcase the fireman’s mastery of equipment and life-saving skills. Water is a prominent feature of this event, and there will be a splash zone. So spectators sitting in certain rows will likely get a bit damp or perhaps quite soaked. Sponsors from local businesses will provide the cash jackpot for the winning fire department and 100 percent of the money raised will go directly back to the fire departments. Gates for the Fireman’s Challenge will open at 6:30 p.m., and the fun begins at 7 p.m.
Broken Heart Rodeo Company returns to fair
Broken Heart Rodeo Company is welcomed back to this year’s Sanpete County Fair. The ever-popular Broken Heart Rodeo will fill the arena with roping, riding and wrangling adventures. The rodeo will take place Thursday, Aug. 23, at 6:45 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 25, at 7:45 p.m. The Aug. 24 event is scheduled a little earlier to allow youngsters to be able to be up and bright-eyed for school the next day. The Broken Heart Rodeo Company is owned and operated by the Ben and Jennifer German family out of West Point. They run 300 head of horses and 80 head of bulls and have provided animals for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas and top rodeos throughout Utah. The company has received stock contractor of the year awards with both the Intermountain Professional Rodeo Association and the Rocky Mountain Pro Rodeo Association (RMPA) in past years. New this year, will be the parade of champions from the Junior Livestock show during the Saturday, Aug. 25 performance. This will give the young winners a chance to show off their stock after putting in much effort to raise them to the status of champions. The Sanpete Cattlemen’s Association welcome everyone to the annual Beef Feast – a traditional steak fry featuring some of the best meat found in Sanpete County. Beef producers enjoy showcasing their products for friends and neighbors in Sanpete as well as to visitors to the area making the Beef Feast a fair tradition for many families. The Beef Feast, scheduled for noon, Saturday, Aug. 25, in front of the Exhibit Building, will include 400 succu-
lent New York strip steaks. Side dishes vary from year-toyear and when the steaks are gone the feast is over. The cost is $10. Lines begin forming early and are steady for a couple hours, so come early and come hungry. Local performers given opportunity to showcase talents Local groups or individuals who would like to share their talents are encourged to be part of the Open Talent Show during the Sanpete County Fair. The show gives local up-and-coming artists and performers an opportunity to perform and entertain others during the fair.  The free show is held on the stage under the pavilion on the south side of the fairgrounds. Shows are scheduled for three days during the fair beginning Thursday and Friday, Aug. 23 and 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All performers are welcome and encouraged to participate. Coloring contest winners displayed
Elementary students across Sanpete County competed in this year’s Sanpete County Fair Coloring Contest hosted by Mathew Olsen of Ephraim. Kindergarten through fifth grade classes from the county’s schools sent in 433 entries for a chance to win. The coloring contest was a simple line drawing created by Calan Olsen, Ephraim, of a Fun on the Farm scene. All entries were judged on creativity, neatness, and color scheme. Five winners in each grade were selected in the coloring contest, and each will receive a Thursday night rodeo ticket and meal deal to be redeemed at the upcoming Sanpete County Fair, Aug. 16-25. The judges were impressed by the large number of amazing entries received, which made choosing the winners difficult. There was also a contest to name the new character, a semi-truck. Kortlyn Brotherson from Wales was chosen as the winner in this contest by naming the semi-truck “Fred.” Winning entries will be displayed in the Fun on Farm buildings at the Sanpete County Fair. Miss Sanpete County, Outstanding Teen royalties to be selected Aug. 3 The pageant to choose a new Miss Sanpete County 2018-19 and her royalty, and a new Miss Sanpete Outstanding Teen Royalty will take place Friday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m., at Manti High School, 100 West 500 North, Manti. Tickets will be available at the door, which opens at 6 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults; Kids ages 4-11 are $4 each. Adult tickets will receive a program, additional programs are $1 each. The selection committee is pleased to have all cities within the county represented by these fine young women as they showcase their talents, desire to be of service and work towards challenging themselves and others to grow. Miss Sanpete County Contestants seeking to be chosen as the new Miss Sanpete County will compete in: Interview (10 minutes) 25 percent of score; Talent (1 minute 30 seconds or 90 seconds) 35 percent of score; Evening Wear 20 percent of score; On-stage Question 5 percent of score; Lifestyle and Fitness on stage 15 percent of overall score. Miss Sanpete County is an affiliated Miss America scholarship pageant and the new Miss Sanpete will compete for the title of Miss Utah in June of 2019. She will also receive a $2,000 scholarship written to the school of her choice at the end of her reign, along with a $1,000 wardrobe allowance to help her prepare to compete at the state level. Miss Sanpete County attendants will receive smaller scholarships as follows: first attendant $500; second attendant $400; third attendant $300; and fourth attendant $200. The selection committee were so pleased to work with the outgoing 2017-18 royalty of queen, Michayla Jackson, Milburn; first attendant, Bellamy Sorensen, Gunnison; second attendant, Amelia Nell, Ephraim; third attendant, Senora Childs, Centerfield; and fourth attendant, Jillane Olsen, Manti. The Miss Sanpete County competition is an open pageant. Participants do not have to have been in a royalty prior to compete, just meet the residency and age requirements. “Battle of the Beans” cook-off set Aug. 18 Chili and cornbread is what’s cookin’ this year during the annual Dutch oven cook-off. The “Battle of the Beans” competition is on Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds, approximately 500 North State, Manti. Don’t worry about a lack of expertise, come join the cookin’ fun. Find that family special recipe for a red chili, chili verde (green) dish or cornbread or all three and prepare to impress everyone, including the judges. Bring the completed form, available in this magazine, to the pavilion at 2 p.m., to enter the cook-off. Chili judging will begin at 4:30 p.m., and will be available to purchase after the judging for $5 per bowl with the proceeds going to the Sanpete County Fair.

Dutch oven history Dutch ovens are a distinctive cooking pot which has thick walls, generally manufactured from cast iron. It can be cast iron with an enameled finish but in any case it has a tight-fitting lid. Dutch ovens have been used for centuries within kitchens around the globe as a widely used cooking vessel. The phrase “Dutch oven” has been around and used for more than 300 years. During the 1600s the Dutch discovered a significantly better system for producing molds for casting the pots using sand, which makes the resulting pots have a far smoother surface area. Throughout the history of America the actual cooking pots have become shallower and legs have been added to better keep the pot above the hot coals on an open fire. Early colonists appreciated the flexibility and sturdiness associated with cast iron. In fact the ovens were regarded as being so useful, that early colonists entered them into their wills. Rapidly, this new oven came to be greatly valued by American colonists, mainly because its cast-iron construction caused it to be long-lasting while its design helped bring about the notable versatility. The truth is, housewives seldom called for any other sort of pot, because the Dutch oven pot may be employed for boiling, frying, stewing, roasting as well as baking - all
in one. In 1704, a man named Abraham Darby traveled from England to Holland to inspect a Dutch casting process by which brass vessels where cast in dry sand molds. Upon returning to England, Darby experimented with the process and eventually patented a casting process using a better type of molding sand, as well as a process of baking the mold to improve casting smoothness. He eventually began casting pots and shipping them to the new colonies and throughout the world. Others have suggested that early Dutch traders or salesmen peddling cast iron pots may have given rise to the name “Dutch oven.” Still others believe that the name came from Dutch settlers in the Pennsylvania area who used similar cast iron pots or kettles. To this day, the name Dutch oven is applied to various cast pots or kettles. The most common application of the name is to a cast iron pot or kettle with a flat bottom having three legs to hold the oven above the coals, flat sides and a flat, flanged lid for holding coals. These ovens have a steel bail handle attached to “ears” on each side of the oven near the top for carrying. No matter what you call it or what shape it is cast to, a well-prepared meal from a Dutch oven has a delicious flavor unmatched by most other cookware.

Donnie Landis set to entertain at fair rodeos, demo derby Donnie Landis, professional barrelman, rodeo clown and founder of Roughstock 101 and Lil Bucks Bull Co. Roughstock 101, will perform during the Sanpete County Fair RMPRA Rodeos, Thursday and Saturday, Aug. 23 and 25. He will also provide entertainment during the demolition derby on Friday, Aug. 24. As far as an entertainer, Donnie Landis is one of the best in the business. His family orientated humor will leave the audience in stitches! His Vaudeville type stand up walk, talk and timing are the best in the business. The first time Donnie was in a rodeo arena he was four years old helping his dad do his clown acts. Donnie is a fourth-generation rodeo cowboy. His Dad was a rodeo clown/bullfighter. He also rode bulls and bucking horses. Later Donnie produced rodeos and his dad helped form the California Cowboys Association (CCA), now known as the C.C.P.R.A. Donnie’s mom was also very involved as a rodeo secretary and had many other official jobs. He started clowning and fighting bulls when he was 12 years old at CCA. Some of the rodeos he has worked include Mariposa and Pacifica, CA. Donnie turned professional when he was 18! The first PRCA rodeo Donnie worked was the San Jose Firefighters Rodeo. As a professional thus far, Donnie has worked many major Rodeos. He has provided entertainment twice for the Wrangler National Finals in 1993 and 95. That show in 1993 was his first at the national finals! Years later, he’s still doing what he loves, being a cowboy clown/entertainer. It should be noted, that in addition to
Donnie’s entertainment skits include Mario the trained Flea, Jose Jose the bull fighting dog and a Wild Cantbeatalope. Spectators never know what to expect when Donnie’s calling the shots. Plan now to see his act during the rodeos and demo derby Aug. 23 - 25.

He is always on hand if there is a breakdown.

First-ever demolition derby in the new arena
Grand smashing event set Friday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. Join in the “Grand Celebration” for the most smashing event, as the annual Sanpete County Fair Demolition Derby roars into the new arena Friday Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. The exciting tradition continues with local drivers competing with those from out of the area for over $35,000.00 in cash and prizes. The whole family will want to catch the action in the newly-completed arena. Local area businesses have been very generous in offering support for this long-standing entertainment. The entire family can enjoy the celebration with suspense and excitement while cheering for their favorite drivers. This nail-biting, breath-stealing, action-filled night is sure to be a grand celebration for all. The top drivers in each full-size car heat will compete for thousands of dollars during the main event. Those who haven’t made it into the main event will have one final opportunity to earn their way in during the grudge match. Prizes are as follows: TRUCKS: 1st Place: $3,000; 2nd Place: $2,000; and 3rd Place: $1,000. 80’s: Top two each take home $400 and advance into the finals. RULES AND REGULATIONS 2018 Sanpete County Fair Demolition Derby Rules apply to both Old Iron, Trucks And Mini Cars 1). We reserve the right to refuse entering any vehicle for just cause. All inspectors’ and judges’ decisions are final. 2). Frames and body’s model of passenger car or station wagon may be used. No 1973 or older Imperials, Lebarons. No ambulances, Hearses, Sedagons, limousines, convertibles or four wheel drives allowed. Mini car wheel base must not exceed 104” or 1990 and newer cars 108” (measurement taken from center of rear hub to center of front hub). 3). NO modified wheel bases. NO V8 Engines in the mini car class. 3. The hood will remain in original position. Pucks can be removed. No added weight except for the welding. Only one of the following filler materials may be used for welding: Up to 1/2” round steel OR rebar OR 2” x 1/4” flat strap. Doors, hood and trunk must be welded, NO CHAINING OR BOLTING. One of the following may be used; stock O.E.M. bumpers off of any passenger car, aftermarket bumpers may be used but a maximum of 5”x 5”x 3/16” square tube. Must be straight open-ended square tube and cannot extend more than 12” outside of frame. In addition, a point may be added using the same material but may not exceed 12” from the back edge of the square tube. Only one bumper bracket per frame rail is allowed, this applies to the rear bumper bracket as well. You may use pipe in place of shock tubes, pipe up to 3” O.D. and 1/8” wall and 18” long max pipe must be open on one side. Bumpers can be welded or chained to the frame. Only two chains may be used. Chain may loop through the hood or trunk. Excessive chaining (more than 2 wraps) will not be allowed. No chain may be welded at any point to the frame or body. 4). No kickers may be used. A minimum of a 4” gap if kickers are installed. Kickers are two straight pieces of 2”x 2” pipe or tube that are welded to the front side of the dash bar and go thru the firewall and welded to the top of the frame near the A arm. For 80’s ONLY, if using kickers, driver will run with the old iron cars. 5). Strapping may be used instead of chain from the top of the hood and the trunk to the bumpers. The strapping cannot be any larger than 2” wide by 1/4” thick. It may not extend past the bumper onto the frame. Only use two straps per hood and trunk. If the strapping is any bigger than this you will cut it. 6). No painting or undercoating may be used underneath the car. Engine compartment should be grease free. 7). Only air may be used to inflate your tire. 8). All cars must exhibit the ability to stop before entering the arena. If a car loses its braking ability it will be subject to disqualification. 9). Any engine and transmission combination may be used in any car, but must be mounted within 5” of the original motor, must be mounted securely. Distributor protectors or full engine cradles are not allowed. You may cut a hole in the firewall to accommodate the engine within reason. However, it must be covered to prevent a fire hazard. 10). Holes left in the firewall from removing the dash and heater must be covered to prevent fire hazards. 11). No holes will be allowed in the floor of the car except to accommodate the transmission shifter, fuel and transmission lines and wiring. Shifters may be welded or bolted. Patching holes is for safety not reinforcement. If patching rust holes you may use sheet metal only, not to exceed 2” past rusted area. If double thick sheeting extends further out, you will cut holes through the sheeting. 12). Motor mounts may be welded; transmission and motors may be chained. If making motor mounts to raise, shift, or to use different motor in different car, mounts cannot exceed original footprint of motor mount. (Approximately 5” X 5”)
13). Any 5 or 8 lug rear end may be used. Rear end may not strengthen body or frame of car in any way. 14). Chain cannot be larger than 3/8”. Bolts must be 3/8” and no longer than 6 inches. Washers cannot exceed 1” diameter. 15). All glass and outside hardware must be removed. Rear seat and all flammable material must be removed from inside the car. All dash glass and plastic must be removed or taped. 16). Cut an 8” hole in the hood and the trunk for inspection and fire safety. One six inch hole must be cut in the hood of a mini car. 17). Fire wall, radiator, and air filter must be left in original place. Air filter must remain on the car at all times. Water only in radiator. NO antifreeze. 18). Batteries must be moved and mounted to passenger floor and four ways bolted down. Battery must be covered. 19). Seven gallons of gas maximum. Factory gas tanks must be removed. A marine type tank or fuel cell must be used. Fuel tank must be barricaded from the driver with metal or rubber. Gas line to tank must have a fitting. Please make these safe!! 20). All interior bars may not exceed a 6” outside diameter or have greater than 10” X 10” X 1/2” end plates. Bars must be straight with no contoured pieces and have a minimum 1/8” wall thickness. All bars must be welded in place. No bolting allowed. One bar on the front window running from the roof down to the cowl or front dashboard bar is mandatory. No more than two bars may be used. 21). A bar behind the seat is mandatory. It must be located no more than 6” from the final resting position of your seat. 22). An optional bar may be put in the front where the dashboard was located, in between the front door posts. You may weld a connecting bar on the inside of the driver’s and passenger door only from the front bar to the rear bar creating in essence a box. The bar on the passenger side must be 6 inches in from the door. DO NOT WELD ANY OF THESE BARS TO THE FRAME. 23). Suspension must be original factory for models of car. (No pulling shocks and putting pipes in their place). You may not clamp the shocks. No solid suspension. Suspension must work. No air shocks may be used. Frame repairs on pre-run cars are allowed to repair damaged areas of the frame using eight (8) total 6” by 4” max ¼” thick pates. 24). Driver’s door and post must be padded. Front seat must be safely secured. 25). Drivers must wear a D.O.T. approved full-faced crash helmet. EYE PROTECTION IS REQUIRED. One flag to wave in case of injury. Seat belts are MANDATORY. Neck braces are recommended. 26). Electric fuel pumps will only be allowed with a master disconnect switch installed on the dash in front of the steering wheel. No starting fluid is allowed. 27). Only one driver allowed per car. Drivers must stay in their safety belts at all times during the competition with your helmet on, even if you are out of time. 28). NO DRIVER DOOR HITS. Cars entering the arena must compete at all times, 2 minute time limit. A legal hit is ½ a car length, rocking will not be considered a hit. “Sandbaggers” will be disqualified. Junior Fair Board excited to help with events
2018 marks the second year for the Sanpete County Junior Fair Board. The board was created last year and has witnessed success from the addition of younger generation participation and involvement in the fair. It is a great way to invest in the fair operations for many generations to come as the youth see first-hand what it takes to organize such an event. The youth are able to implement their own ideas at the fair as well. The junior fair board meets regularly like the regular fair board and has taken on the responsibility to oversee the Fireman’s Challenge and other events. This year’s junior board members are Mason Cox, Mayfield; Kacey Cartright, Ephraim; Brayden Hodson, Manti; Michaela Bennett, Mayfield; Laini Reber, Axtell; Jessica Everitt, Ephraim; and Amandah Malstrom, Manti. Laini Reber Laini Reber, daughter of Matt and Brandi Reber, Axtell, is a senior at Gunnison Valley High School. This is her second year to serve on the Sanpete County Junior Fair Board and she is excited to do so. Laini and her family moved to Axtell 13 years ago and she has been involved with the Sanpete County Fair ever since. She began exhibiting chickens in the Small Animal Barn and showing lambs in the Pee Wee Show. She is an active member of the 4-H program, serving in leadership positions on the county and state levels. She loves showing livestock at the fair and sharing her knowledge with others. Laini has learned many skills while doing 4-H projects for the Exhibit Building, such as baking, quilting and embroidery. One of her favorite fair events is the demolition derby. She also loves to watch the rodeos. Last year, she even tried her hand at the Dutch Oven Cook-Off. She works as a life guard at the Gunnison Swimming Pool and teaches swim lessons. She is an officer in the Gunnison Valley FFA Chapter and enjoys livestock judging and working with others. Brayden Hodson Brayden Hodson, 17, is the son of Rodney and Jolynn Hodson, Manti. This is his second year to serve on the Sanpete County Junior Fair Board. Brayden likes to fish, hunt and ride his dirt bike. He is a senior at Manti High School and is excited to serve the county as a member of the Junior Sanpete County Fair Board. Michaela Bennett Michaela Bennett, 17, is the daughter of Mike and Amanda Bennett, Mayfield. She is a senior at Gunnison
Valley High School. She loves fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends and also loves spending time at the fair. This is her second year to serve on the Sanpete County Junior Fair Board. Mason Cox Mason Cox will be a senior at Gunnison Valley High School this year. He is active in his school and his community. This is his second year to serve on the Sanpete County Fair Board. Mason has a special talent for welding and has won competitions with his welding projects. He enjoys motorcycles, mountain biking, wake boarding, hunting, trapping and jeeping. Mason is a hard worker and enjoys working outside. He also holds the rank of Eagle Scout. Jessica Everitt Jessica Everitt was the 2017-18 Sanpete County Sweetheart. She is the daughter of Deric and Muria Everitt, Ephraim. She is hard-working, determined, adventurous and a little bit sassy. Every little girl loves horses, but most grow out of that phase; Jessica on the other hand never did. love for the four-legged creatures has only grown. Her best friend is her horse, Blue. Jessica has been training Blue since she was saddle broke. She has really enjoyed training her horse and plans to continue with Blue’s future foal. Jessica is a graduate from Manti High School, where she was also taking concurrent Snow College courses as well. She plans to obtain her associates degree at Snow College and further her education at the University of Utah to become a pharmacist. Jessica was born in California and has lived on both sides of the country. She likes to travel and has been to 42 states. She plans to visit the 48 continental states by age 18 and all 50 in her lifetime. She is excited and grateful for the opportunity to serve on the Sanpete County Junior Fair Board. She lives in Manti and has met and worked with many amazing people throughout the county in her various interests and activities, which include serving on the Sanpete County Junior Fair Board. She has also been the 2016 Fairview Pioneer Days rodeo queen and participated in horse 4-H. She is a genuine animal-loving gal. Although her passion is horses, she also loves her ducks, turkeys, chickens, bunnies, goats and lambs.
Amandah spends countless hours taking care of animals, feeding, watering, cleaning pens as well as midnight bottle feeding. She even has delivered babies in the rain. Besides her caretaking duties, she also spends lots of time training and enjoying her animals. She also enjoys grand entry runs at local rodeos, shooting and hunting with her brothers, family barbecues and playing soccer. Along with her general education, she plans to pursue the specialty areas of agriculture and photography. She is geared towards her goal of becoming a licensed equine chiropractor and massage therapist.

Jr. Livestock Show winds up hard work for youth The Sanpete County Jr. Livestock Show is a great educational program for youth ages 9-18 and has been conducted annually at the Sanpete County Fair since the mid-1980s. Youth registered with 4-H or FFA participate by purchasing a calf, a pig, a lamb or goat, which are fed, groomed and exercised for 60 to 100 days. The youth also study animal science and how to lead and show the animal. All of the hard work and study is challenged at the livestock show where youth demonstrate their livestock projects to a judge. The final event is the Livestock Auction/Sale where members of the community and local businesses purchase or contribute a donation to purchase a livestock project animal. The livestock is processed at a local meat processing plant for a good supply of high-quality meat

2017 Grand Champion Beef Jentrey Rigby’s entry was chosen as the 2017 Grand Champion Beef last year. She says that the 4-H program has been a great experience. It has allowed her to be able to spend more time together with her family. Rigby says she has learned that she is responsible for an animal that depends on her to survive and that no one will take care of it for her. She also says that she learned there is no magical show stick or lucky brush that turns a cow into a champion. Its all lots of hard work and determination.

2017 Grand Champion Goat named
Many things have been learned by Kaylee Hains through participating in the 4-H program. She found that working hard, while giving up fun, can be rewarding. She has watched new friends take her under their wings and help her by teaching about her animal and how to care for it. Because of that help, she has learned to better help and teach others. Physically, Hains has become stronger by carrying the needed buckets of fresh water daily and working with her goats. She also has become emotionally stronger as she learned to take charge of the animals so they didn’t take charge of her. The whole process has helped her confidence grow as she participated in the 4-H program.

2017 Grand and Reserve Champion Hogs come from same farm
Mckade Sweat, Mt. Pleasant, showed his pigs during the 2017 Sanpete County Fair and one of them was chosen as reserve champion and another as grand champion. He was quite happy about that, especially since it isn’t that often both winners come from the same farm. Sweat has attended Moroni Elementary’s dual immersion program. He has one little brother and two little sisters. In his spare time he wrestles, rides horses, goes fishing and rodeos. 2017 was Sweat’s first year in the 4-H program. He learned a lot from raising his pigs. He says the most interesting thing he learned was how clean pigs are. It surprised him the most because after all - they are pigs.
Mckade Sweat was a happy young man during the 2017 Sanpete County Fair because two of his hogs won awards as Grand Champion and Reserve Champion.

During the 2017 Sanpete County Fair, Jerrit Anderson showed his lamb, which was chosen as the Grand Champion Lamb. Anderson said that 2017 was his first year participating in 4H and in Sanpete County Junior Livestock. It was his decision to show a lamb. The first night after Anderson received the lamb, a dog got into the pen and attacked the lamb with several bites, which caused some bad sores. Anderson was devastated and thought his chances of doing well at the show were over. So he worked hard all summer, getting up early for feeding and working with the lamb and taking care of its injuries. By show time the sores had all healed better than Anderson had anticipated, leaving only some minor scars. Which was great, because the lamb was chosen as the Grand Champion Lamb. Anderson says that the 4H program has taught him many things. He learned that with hard work and dedication any obstacle can be overcome. He says that people just have to put their mind to it and work around the obstacle. He offers special appreciation to his parents, Joey and Amy Anderson, and all of his sponsors and supporters, including Gunnison Hospital, Dr. Blackham, Dr. Beck, Freedom Ford, David and Lori Beck, Tammy Averett, Rodney Willardsen, Triple S, Dr. Frandsen, Centerfield City, Sakia Broast and Landon and Kim Sorenson.

2018-19 Jr. Princess Royalty named
Last May, nine young ladies participated in the Junior Princess Royalty pageant, which was a two day event in Manti. The first day, contestants were judged on modeling and appearance, public speaking, interview and personality at Manti High School. The next day, the girls met at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds, Manti, with their horses, and were judged on horse knowledge, horse skills, Western Pleasure style of riding, carrying the flag and on their queen presentation ride. The judges then selected and crowned the new 2018 Junior Princess Royalty. Mattisen Wanner was selected to be the new junior princess. Her attendants are Kenley Kelso, first attendant; and Jordan Brouillette, second attendant. Mattisen also won Miss Congeniality. During the summer, the Junior Princess Royalty will represent Sanpete County at all parades and rodeos in the county, as well as the Ute Stampede in Nephi. During the Sanpete County Fair, they will be at a majority of the fair events, and reign over the rodeo. The royalty also helps during the pet show, horse pulls, Fun on the Farm, open horse show, Junior Rodeo and anywhere

She has one younger sister, five horses, a dog that thinks it’s human and she attends Gunnison Middle school. Matti is best described as a ball cap wearin’, animal lovin’, roller coaster ridin’, outdoorsy, country girl that loves to laugh. She lives by a motto, which is to be the reason NOBODY sits alone at the lunch table. First Attendant Kenley Kelso Kenley Kelso, 10, daughter of Kurt and Lindsay Kelso, Mt. Pleasant, is proud to serve as the first attendant in the Sanpete County Junior Princess Royalty. She attends Mt. Pleasant Elementary and has a history of academic and athletic success. Kenley’s interests include agriculture, animal care, barrel racing, basketball, horse riding, and representing the worldwide sport of rodeo. She is known for her high aptitude of equine prowess and understands the horse and its behaviors. She is a Sanpete grown cowgirl who enjoys time spent with her two younger brothers. They love hunting, fishing, camping, and galloping through the brush and hills near their home. Second Attendant Jordan Brouillette Jordan Brouillette, 9, is the daughter of Addam and Nicole Brouillette, Manti. She loves to participate in many activities including 4-H, gymnastics, softball and Girl Scouts. Jordan has been an active participant in Girl Scouts since Kindergarten and she loves the many adventures and opportunities that the program creates for her, including community service projects. When she has free time, she can usually be found on a trail ride with her horse Poco, playing with her dog Maggie, or building one of her many Lego sets. Jordan is excited to represent Sanpete County as part of the princess royalty this year.

Children find balloons with prizes in Mud Scramble A fast dash for prizes through the mud is found at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 3:30 p.m., for all children ages three through 10. Mud is always fun to play in, but even more exciting when the children get to run, jump, plunge and race for colorful balloons containing prizes. Each participant will receive a prize for retrieving a balloon from the mud.

Get ready to rumble in the mud during one of the slippery, sloppy, riotous games in the mud volleyball tournament which begins at 9 a.m., Aug. 25, at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds on the west side of the fairgrounds, right behind Manti’s swimming pool. This will be a true double elimination tournament. Teams consist of up to eight members. Each participant will receive a T-shirt. The cost is $50 per team. A prize will be awarded to the winning team. There will be a limit of eight teams, so be quick to get entered to participate. Community groups, sport teams, businesses, families or any other mix of players are en-

Monroe Magnuson returns to announce rodeo, demolition derby Monroe Magnuson has made a living doing many different things in his life, including working as an FSA auditor, convenience store owner, brand inspector, livestock sales manager, graphics designer, cattle judge, equipment operator, veterinary technician, labor force supervisor and a rancher. But of all the career paths he has followed, none drives his passion like the job of announcer. In 2008, he answered a call from a longtime cattle producer and friend expecting to talk about the cattle business, state of the beef business, politics and kids and such, but the result of that phone call was far different than he had ever expected. After the regular cowboy banter and ribbings between the two, the caller commented “Monroe, my wife and I have decided you need a career change.” “I didn’t really know how to react when he said that, so I just asked what he meant,” explains Magnuson. “My friend explained that they were in a bind and hunting for a rodeo announcer and they thought I should give it a whirl. I am always up for something new and a challenge, so I said okay.” That first performance was “baptism by fire,” he said, “There were several injuries, and I had no idea how to handle them or explain to the crowd what was going on.” But the emotional rush was more than Magnuson could predict and he was hooked. For the next three years he became the voice of the “Invitational Rodeo” at Panguitch. In addition, he began booking rodeos anywhere he could convince the rodeo contractors and committees to hire him. Long back before all this, when Magnuson was five, his father died of injuries incurred from a horse accident on the family’s ranch. “Because my Dad and Mom were in the process of building their cattle operation at the time of my father’s accident and death,” he says, “I spent my youth working with my mother and older brother doing what needed done to make the cattle operation work.” “I was heavily involved in 4-H, riding club and scouting,” he says, “but I never really had the opportunity to do things like rodeo, although it was something I think I would have wanted to do when I was younger.” While Magnuson now operates a cattle operation of his own and grew up in a ranching family, rodeo was not

anything in which he had ever participated. “I did the regular chores and duties that every other cattleman does every day caring for his livestock,” he says, “and I also had the opportunity to show and sell beef cattle all over the nation. I loved to watch rodeo.” He relates, “I remember as a kid going to watch rodeo’s and soaking everything up about the production and how it could have been changed or what was cool and done well but through all of that, it never occurred to me to be involved in Rodeo,” explains Magnuson. “But after having the opportunity to announce, I
became aware that it was a life I would have loved when I was younger, a community that I truly enjoy, and a great opportunity to educate about, and tell the story of a way of life, the cowboy way of life, that I love and believe in,” he said. “When my father was injured, the community in which we lived rallied around us to make sure we were taken care of,” Magnuson related. “But it was the rodeo community that stepped up to the plate and got things moving.” The year his father died, the Southern Utah Rodeo Association Finals was scheduled for his home town. The rodeo committee dedicated the finals that year to his father, who was the secretary, and the committee donated all the proceeds to help Magnuson’s mother pay the bills. “I believe the American cowboy is respected and maybe even idolized,” he comments. “They say everybody loves a cowboy, and if that is so, it is because of what he represents, integrity, grit and determination and a human heart for those in need. That is a story I want to tell.” Since that 2008 “Baptism by Fire” rodeo, Magnuson has announced rodeos, derbies, moto-cross and monster truck shows throughout the Western United States. In 2011, he was honored to be selected as one of three announcers for the National Finals Rodeo of the National
Little Britches Association in Pueblo, CO; and in 2012, was selected to announce as the lead announcer at the NLBRA National Finals. Magnuson has had the opportunity to announce the finals of the Western States Bucking Bull Association in 2014 and has been voted twice as announcer of the year in the Rocky Mountain Pro Rodeo Association (RMPRA). The Magnuson’s make their home in Castle Dale, where he operates a cattle operation, is the laborer supervisor for Emery Water Conservation District, and stays busy traveling to announce rodeos, demolition derby’s and monster truck shows. He usually takes his family with him on the road, including his wife, Amber, his best buddy and son Zayne, age 13, and princess Zoee, age nine. As the announcer of the Sanpete County Fair’s rodeo and demolition derby for the past six years, Magnuson’s goal is to carry the audience through the “story of life” filled with patriotism, defeat, victory, maybe some tears, laughter and fast paced action as he tells the story of the rodeo cowboy. “Rodeo fans, whether first timers or seasoned, have See MAGNUSON, page 80

spent hard earned dollars on an opportunity to see a show and ride along with the contestants for a few moments,” Magnuson comments. “My goal is to make sure they get their money’s worth.” Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, Aug. 23-25, when leaving the arena, those who attend will hear Monroe end the performance with one sentence which he strives to live by and of which he reminds his audience with every performance. It goes like this, “When we all finally step up to that last pay window, it won’t matter whether we win or lose, but how we made the ride.” That’s a thought that all should consider daily and a message Magnuson strives to relay.

Little buckaroos make their mark during Junior Rodeo Once again the Sanpete County Fair Board is excited to bring back the Junior Rodeo for 2018, to be held Saturday Aug. 18, at 6 p.m., at the fairgrounds arena, approximately 500 North State, Manti. The rodeo will include many events including mutton bustin’ for ages 3 to 6. The entry fee is $10. Trophies will be given to the top three riders. A winner-takes-all trophy will be presented to the top rider that night. A calf riding event will be held for ages 7 to 9. The entry fee is $15. First place will receive a buckle and trophies for second and third places. Steer riding will take place for ages 10 to 13. The entry fee is $15. First place will receive a buckle and trophies for second and third place. The Junior Rodeo will also include junior barrels for ages 12 and under. If more entries are received than can be arranged, then a random lottery to determine participants will be drawn. Those who are drawn out for participation in any event will be called and notified. Fun on the Farm celebrates 10 years with more fun! Fun on the Farm is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with even more fun and activities. There will be three days of “hands-on” agricultural fun beginning Thursday and Friday, Aug. 23 – 24, from 4-7 p.m., and continues Saturday, Aug. 25, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., inside the Sanpete County fairgrounds behind the swimming pool. This is a free activity. Children in second grade or under need to be accompanied by an adult to participate. Fun on the Farm is a hands-on agricultural exhibit that teaches how food gets from the farm to the table. Visitors start at the first building and put on an apron and get a basket and proceed through the buildings. Each building is dedicated to a different farm animal. As visitors go from building to building there are products to gather, such as milk chug, honey, bacon, fruit, or vegetables.
In addition, there are different activities at each building like milking a cow, holding a Madagascar hissing cockroach, branding a cow, carding wool and other fun activities. Products gathered are turned in at the market in exchange for a Fun on the Farm dollar. Participants can then spend their dollar at the store for a treat or prize. An estimated 2,500 visitors have attended the Fun on the Farm each year. Because it is the 10th anniversary, there are some special activities planned for the 2018 celebration including bean bag tosses, a chicken cup race, a rubber duck race, and other happenings throughout each day. About Fun on the Farm Fun on the Farm is a permanent exhibit at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds. It was created by Calan Olsen in response to a suggestion from his grandpa, Steve Frischknecht. 10 years ago it all began with eight buildings that were placed in a lawn area that was far from permanent. Through the years, a market and insect building have been added and the whole exhibit was placed in a permanent location. Over time, sidewalks, lawn, sprinklers, and fencing have been added. This year, the plan is to add a silo and to give many of the buildings a much needed facelift. Fun on the Farm is a project that is supported by donations. Anyone that would like to donate toward the

First-ever Cowboy Mounted Shooting event coming to rodeo
One of the fastest growing equine sports in the nation, Cowboy Mounted Shooting, is part of the 2018 Grand Celebration, RMPRA Rodeo. It all gets underway at 7 p.m., each night, Thursday and Saturday, Aug. 23 and 25, at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds new arena, approximately 500 North State, Manti. The sport of mounted shooting got started in Arizona in 1996. Since then, interest in the competition sport has exploded, with lots of interested riders. Brent Daniels is one of the original Sanpete County shooters and he is the one that helped Lon Pritchard get started. The Cowboy Mounted Shooting completions involve the use of two six guns, rifle or a double barrel shotgun and a fast horse. It is a timed event with five second penalties for targets missed and the fasted overall time wins. There are 64 different courses. See SHOOTING, page 93

Each town in Sanpete County had to begin somewhere, by someone, perhaps for a certain reason settlers came here.
Historical beginnings in Sanpete County It all started when the Ute Chief Wakara invited pioneers to settle the San Pitch valley, named after a tribe of hunter-gatherer Indians. Wakara claimed that the Great Spirit had appeared to him in a dream, telling him to welcome the white men. Later, Wakara engaged his guests in the infamous “Walker War� from 1853-54. The Black Hawk War, named for another Ute leader, also disrupted county settlement from 1865-68. Eventually, the San Pitch name was corrupted to Sanpete, which then became Sanpete County. Some historians now believe that more than the agricultural skills Wakara claimed to want for himself and his tribe, he was interested in the cattle that the pioneers seemed to take with them everywhere they went. The county wasn’t the only entity to undergo a name change. Most of the cities within the county have gone through changes in identity since their founding.

Indianola Lying at the northeast edge of Thistle Valley, Indianola was organized as a ward and named by Apostle Erastus Snow in 1880. Then it numbered over 100 members-half Indians, half Whites. North Sanpeters had herded livestock in the valley and even homesteaded there before Brigham Young decided to set up a model Indian farm for Utes not already removed to the Unitah Basin. Eventually the church had to pay $12,000 to induce pioneers to vacate the valley. Eventually, most of the Utes moved away, died, or simply failed to multiply, so some of the sellers eventually returned to the valley. Most of them lived on their farms rather than locate close to the brick meetinghouse (now a granary) built on the town site.
