Dick Sumsion named parade grand marshal

Lifelong Springville resident Richard “Dick” Sumsion will be honored as the grand marshal of the 2018 Art City Days Grand Parade on Saturday, June 9. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. that day and travel down 400 South and Main streets. Sumsion, 88, was the driving force behind the creation of Contractor Legacy Park, located at 50 South and 100 East on the bank of Hobble Creek. A bridge crosses from the Springville Public Library over Hobble Creek to the park. The Contractor Legacy Park was built as a monument to the many roadway and heavy construction contractors who have been located in Springville throughout the city’s history. A bronze plaque at the Contractor Legacy Park honors 10 early Springville contractors who paved roads and worked on projects throughout the Intermountain West. An article that ran in The Springville Herald in 1955 states that at that time, Springville had “more people engaged in general contracting per capita than any other city in the United States.” The article also states that “it is reported that more than half of the highways built in Utah during the past 25 or 30 years is the work of Springville contractors. In addition, hundreds of miles of highways, many bridges and other construction properties throughout the western states have been contracted by Springville builders.” “Springville was noted as a contractor town,” Dick Sumsion said. The 10 contractors listed on the park plaque are: Ralph Child Construction Co., W.W. Clyde & Co., Grant Construction Co., Deal Mendenhall Construction Co., V.C. Mendenhall Construction Co., J.M. Sumsion & Sons Inc., Thorn Construction Co. Inc., and Whiting and Haymond Construction Co. J.M. Sumsion & Sons was founded by Dick Sumsion’s father J.M. Sumsion. Springville contractors not only had a significant impact upon the landscape that still surrounds residents today, they also have been generous over the years in donating funds, equipment and experienced workers to build parks and other recreational facilities in the city as well as support the local arts. For example, in the early 1960s, the Clyde Foundation and the Clyde family donated $85,000 to build a new wing onto the west side of the Springville Museum of Art. The addition, dedicated on April 25, 1964, made the museum the largest in Utah and the region at the time. In an effort to recognize the contributions of Springville contractors, Dick Sumsion approached the Springville City Council several years ago and proposed creating a park in their honor. The city council unanimously approved the idea, but it took several years to find a suitable location. Eventually, approval was given to utilize land just east of the new Springville Public Library. Dick Sumsion then put together a committee to raise money for the project. Members of his committee approached the families of the Springville contractors and were able to raise nearly $100,000.

Dick and Joann Sumsion The funds paid to complete the park and create a monument with bronze plaques detailing the history of Springville contractors. The park was dedicated on Sept. 20, 2014. There are plans to add a pavilion to the park this summer. Dick Sumsion said he was born into the contracting business, working with his father and his brother James from a young age. Dick Sumsion took over as president of the family company when his father died in 1958. He and his brother ran the business until 1996 when it was sold. James, served as vice president of the company. “In the beginning, there was a lot of contribution from the contractors in the employment of all the young school kids. It was just perfect employment,” Dick Sumsion said. “There were all these contractors and there was a generation of these employees. Everybody had a job with a contractor.” Dick Sumsion was born in Springville and his heritage in the city goes back to 1852 when his great-grandfather arrived here from England. Sumsion graduated from Springville High School where his wife, Joann Blackett Sumsion, also attended and was editor of the high school yearbook. The couple graduated in 1947 and married in 1948. For their wedding, Dick Sumsion’s parents gave them a parcel of land in Springville for a house. They built a home there and still live there today. They raised four children in Springville: Sharee, Brent, Steven and Scott. They have 26 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren. 9

Springville resident and concert pianist Scott Holden has been chosen as Springville’s 2018 Resident Artist during Art City Days. He will be honored during the Art City Days Grand Parade on Saturday, June 9. “Scott Holden plays with obvious commitment … and limpid lyricism … he tackles the keyboard acrobatics fearlessly,” writes Fanfare Magazine. Commitment, lyricism and fearless acrobatics characterize Holden’s career. A solo pianist, champion collaborator, devoted teacher and adjudicator, Holden’s dedication to the art and study of pianism is prevalent across the scope of his work. Holden debuted in Carnegie Hall after winning first prize in the 1996 Leschetizky New York Debut Piano Competition. He has performed in more than 40 states (including at The Kennedy Center and Alice Tully Hall) as well as in Canada, Mexico, England and Russia (Svetlanov Hall). He has performed throughout Europe and in multiple Asian countries including China, Singapore and Vietnam. He has been broadcast on NPR, NBC and CBC, as well as numerous local networks. His enthusiastic support of contemporary music has led to a variety of premieres including William Wallace’s Second Piano Concerto with Keith Lockhart and the Utah Symphony. Regarding this performance, The Salt Lake Tribune wrote, “Mr. Holden secured the stage in a virtuosic performance … We were torn between examining every new note passing by our ears, and Holden’s pianistic acrobatics. It was a wonderful dilemma.” This year’s concerts will take him across the country, ranging from Alaska to New York, as well as in China, Singapore and Europe. Holden will return to Carnegie Hall to play a solo recital in June of 2018, an event that will feature multiple world premieres. Holden has recorded for Parma, Bridge, Tantara and NAXOS Records. His most recent CD, “Beyond Vernon Duke,” was given the highest five-star rating and received praise: “Holden exhibits profoundly musical readings with obvious commitment and great attention to detail.” A sought-after pedagogue, Holden’s students have been prizewinners in numerous competitions including top prizes at MTNA and Gina Bachauer. His students are regularly accepted to the leading graduate programs in the nation. He travels extensively to adjudicate and give master classes at festivals and pedagogy workshops around the world and has contributed to various publications including both volumes of “The Pianist’s Craft,” which has been published domestically and, more recently, in China. Holden holds degrees from the University of Michigan (BM), The Juilliard School (MM), and The Manhattan School of Music (DMA). He studied at The Liszt Academy in Budapest as a Fulbright Scholar. His major teachers have included Arkady Aronov, Martin Canin, Charles Fisher, Arthur Greene, András Kemenes, Nina Lelchuk and Ferenc Rados. He currently chairs the Keyboard Studies department at Brigham Young University and is a faculty member at Summer Performing Arts with Juilliard in Geneva, Switzerland. Holden lives in the mountains of Utah with his wife and four children. When not at the piano, he can be found cycling, building things with wood and adventuring among the red rocks of the Southwest. A devoted resident of Springville, he currently lives in beautiful Hobble Creek Canyon. Art City Days 2018

The Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce has named M. Lee Taylor as its 2018 Citizen of the Year. Taylor’s goal in life is to make people happy through posting local history and photos along with current events that are important. He administers a Facebook site that many residents are aware of called “You know you are from Springville when …” and Lee now has almost 5,000 followers. Taylor was born June 27, 1946, in Springville. He attended Springville schools, graduating from Springville High School in 1964. Some of his fondest memories are of school and the friends he made there and has kept from those days. He entered Brigham Young University in 1965 before deciding to enter the work force and take his chances with the draft. He received his draft notice in November of 1965 and entered the U.S. Army in February of 1966. He was eventually assigned to duty on Okinawa, Japan, arriving on Christmas Eve. After spending a year on Okinawa as a generator operator on a HAWK Missile site, he requested a transfer to duty in Vietnam. The transfer was approved, and after a 30-day leave at home, he arrived in Saigon on Jan. 5, 1968. He was assigned as a crane and shovel operator at Long Binh and witnessed the deadly fireworks of the annual TET offensive. On May 5, he suffered gasoline burns in a motor pool accident and was soon evacuated to the 106th General Hospital in Yokohama, Japan. Soon home on leave after receiving additional treatment at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, he was assigned to duty at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, where he spent his last seven months of duty, being released in February of 1969. His only brother, Kent Childs Taylor, was killed in a helicopter crash in May of 1970 while serving in Vietnam. After leaving the Army, Taylor started working at Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe and became a Journeyman Electrician before quitting in 1991. He immediately went to work for Aerotrans Corporation, directing its electrical division for two years, before quitting and joining the IBEW electrical workers union. He soon went to work for Cache Valley Electric and obtained his Master Electrician license two years later. For the next 14 years, Cache Valley Electric had his working from coast to coast, generally in the position of a general foreman or superintendent. He retired in late 2009. Divorced in 1986 after having had three children, he lived alone for eight years before meeting Larraine Huff and marrying her in 1994. Larraine also had three children, giving Taylor three more children to enjoy. Taylor has traveled far and wide, visiting all 50 states as well as a dozen foreign countries. Along the way, he has tried to visit as many of his old school classmates as he could find the time and resources to visit, and this has become one of his true labors of love. Taylor is a very active member of the Springville Senior Citizens, the Springville Historical Society and the newly reinstated Springville Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. He is also a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Taylor has six children and 14 grandchildren. He and his wife Larraine have been married for 24 years. They love spending time at their cabin high in the mountains of Sanpete County.

Business of the Year: Mountain West Animal Hospital Dr. N. Isaac Bott became a veterinarian to treat animals, but one of his favorite aspects of the job is working with and interacting with the people who come into his hospital. “I’m very passionate about helping people,” said Dr. Bott, who owns and operates Mountain West Animal Hospital in Springville with his wife Melanie. “As a veterinarian, I work on animals, but a big part of my job is talking to people.” Dr. Bott has gotten to know many members of the Springville community since he took over operations at the animal hospital in January of 2014. In January of this year, the Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce presented Mountain West Animal Hospital with its Business of the Year Award for 2017. “This community is a wonderful community. It’s a close-knit community, and the people that I interact with every single day are amazing,” Dr. Bott said. Born in Castle Dale, Dr. Bott was raised on a farm where he developed a love for animals. A personality test in high school revealed him to be an extrovert, however, and as that is not a trait typically associated with veterinarians, he thought he’d probably end up in another career. He clearly remembers when he made the decision to

pursue a veterinary career. While flying home from Peru, where he had just completed a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his thoughts centered on his future career. He knew he’d be starting college soon, and as he reflected over his time in Peru, he realized he’d performed many service projects involving animals there and they were

some of the happiest times of his mission. The decision made, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science and industry from Southern Utah University and a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Washington State University. After working at small animal hospitals in Utah for about four years, Dr. Bott began considering opening his own veterinary hospital in Utah County. Ironically, it was during a visit to Chicago that he met someone who recommended he talk with Dr. Harold Davis, who had owned and operated Mountain West Animal Hospital for more than 35 years. Some months later, while driving around Springville with his family, they saw the animal clinic and stopped to visit and had the opportunity to meet Dr. Davis. From this visit started a wonderful relationship with Dr. Davis with the prospect of purchasing the hospital. Mountain West Animal Hospital currently has a staff of 10 highly trained employees including Dr. Davis, who goes in to work one day a week. The hospital specializes in treating dogs and cats, offering services ranging from vaccines to other basics of preventative care, dental work and surgery as well as reproductive services including semen freezing and artificial insemination. The hospital has top-of-the-line equipment including digital X-rays, in-house blood machines, ultrasounds and lasers used for treating inflammation and other maladies. “There’s a lot of people that are doing dogs and cats, but I feel like I bring a unique skill set to the table in that area,” Dr. Bott said. “I like helping people, and I feel that people really need that and that there’s a demand for it that’s not being met. People want a veterinarian that cares about them and their pet.” Every day at work brings at least one pet that has to be eutha-

nized, and Dr. Bott said he treats the animals and their owners with the compassion and kindness they need and deserve. Outside of his regular veterinary practice, Dr. Bott is known around the world for his knowledge and skills in animal reproduction. He currently serves as president of the Society for Theriogenology, an organization of veterinarians dedicated to animal reproduction, and he’s considered the world expert in reindeer reproduction. “I’m the only person in the world that can artificially inseminate reindeer,” he said. This skill was developed after he received a random phone call from a man with a reindeer that was pregnant and needed to be seen by a veterinarian. “I had never seen a reindeer before,” Dr. Bott said, but he went and ended up delivering the baby reindeer. The man had a small herd of reindeer and wanted someone to artificially inseminate them, and through trial and error Dr. Bott figured out how to do it. “It’s been a fun path for me. I’ve been able to have a lot of opportunities and travel a lot of places,” he said. Performing this procedure on reindeer led Dr. Bott to treating other species such as elk, big horn sheep, white tail deer, water buffalo and antelope. He has collected semen from 39 animal species that is now frozen and stored at his hospital. Dr. Bott and his animal hospital are also being featured in a reality TV show called “DocBott” that is being created by Flash TV in Salt Lake City. The channel can be viewed at www.flash1tv.com. “I want people to see kind of a realistic view of what it’s like (to be a veterinarian),” Dr. Bott said. “A lot of people think of veterinarians as just playing with puppies all day.” Mountain West Animal Hospital is located at 410 S. 450 West in Springville.

New Clyde Recreation Center opens

Springville’s new Clyde Recreation Center, located at 717 South 1200 West, officially opened on May 24. In honor of its opening, the 2018 Art City Days celebration theme is “Splash Into Springville.” The new building encompasses 64,000 square feet and includes both a competition pool and a recreational pool as well as a multipurpose gym, a child care area, an exercise studio, a cardio area and an indoor track. Springville City Recreation Director Corey Merideth said as various groups were taken on tours of the building during its construction, the most common response afterward was amazement at the large size of the building. The interior has a lot of glass walls, allowing a view from one end of the center to the other. “You can go up on the top level and you can look to the left and you can look to the right and you can see the whole building, and it’s incredible how big it looks,” Merideth said. In June of 2017, Clyde Companies Inc. announced it was donating $2 million to the recreation center. This donation allowed the construction of an outdoor pool on the southwest corner of the facility. This pool has a shallow portion for smaller children with a play structure and a deeper area for open swimming. “We have a lot of deck space out there for suntanning or anything else,” Merideth said, adding that there possibly could be events such as concerts held outside on the pool deck in the future. A large folding glass door system has been installed in the wall of the inside pool that will allow it to be opened and used to access the outside pool. The Clyde donation allowed for many other upgrades as well including the installation of a big TV screen near the indoor com-

petition pool for swim meet timing and stats, the addition of a juice bar/concessions stand, and the expansion of the facility’s parking lot. Also obtained through the donation was an outdoor play structure for the “child watch” area and a set of inflatables that fit together to create a floating obstacle course. Swimmers can then navigate the course in the style of the television show “American Ninja Warrior.” The inflatables will be placed in the competition pool periodically when all swimming lanes are not in use. “It (the donation) was a key aspect to getting the building done the right way without having to scrimp and save and cut costs to stay in budget. That donation allowed us to hopefully put out the best product that we can,” Merideth said. Workout equipment in the recreation center includes treadmills, ellipticals, steppers, recumbent bikes, upright bikes, rowers and spin bikes as well as selectorized strength machines, free weights, squat racks and dumbbells. In the cross fit area, there are kettle balls, medicine balls, bosu balls, jumping blocks and a 360 workout station. Some of the more remarkable features of the new center are the three large art glass windows. Their designs reflect the water inside. “We wanted to do something that’s going to represent Springville in this rec center, and of course Springville is the Art City, and we wanted something in here that no other rec centers had,” Merideth said. “This is something that represents the artistic side of Springville.” The art glass was created by Holdman Studios, which has made art glass for many LDS temples and created the “Roots of Knowledge” stained glass installation now housed in the Utah Valley University library.

Sign up online for membership passes Membership passes for the new Clyde Recreation Center in Springville are available for purchase online at https://www. springville.org/clyderecreationcenter/. Those interested can set up an account online and then purchase their pass. Then, through their account, patrons can access information about fitness classes and sign up for classes, reserve Child Watch spots and obtain information about activities and operations at the center. Those with a smart phone can download the Clyde Recreation Center’s app, where they will also be able to access information about fitness classes, sign up for classes and obtain other information. They will also be able to enter the recreation center using just their phone. Those not utilizing the app will receive a card that will be scanned to allow them entrance into the recreation center. Residents can also obtain passes at the Springville Recreation Office, 443 S. 200 East.

Springville Playhouse to present comedy The Springville Playhouse will present the hilarious and zany comedy “Take a Number, Darling” by Jack Sharkey as part of Art City Days. The show will open on Friday, June 8, and continue on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays through June 30. The shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.) on at Merit College Preparatory Academy, 1440 W. Center, Springville. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. “Take a Number, Darling,” is a comedy in three acts that tells the story of concert pianist Duncan Latimer and his wife, Ellen, who is a famous soap opera star. They lead impeccable lives, so their public relations representative has no qualms over inviting a reporter from a scandal magazine to the Latimers’ home for an interview. In hilarious comical confusion, however, at the worst possible moment, Duncan’s old Navy buddy and Ellen’s former lover from her past show up along with an extra wife that Duncan forgot to tell anyone about. 94th annual Spring Salon exhibit on display The 94th annual Spring Salon, one of the longest-running art shows in the state of Utah, is now open at the Springville Museum of Art. The Spring Salon is a juried exhibition showcasing pieces by Utah artists from many backgrounds that were created using a variety of mediums. It will remain on exhibit through July 7 at the museum, located at 126 E. 400 South in Springville. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. The museum is closed Sundays, Mondays and holidays (except for special events). For more information about the Spring Salon or other events and exhibits at the museum, visit smofa.org. The Spring Salon was first held in 1922. It was begun by students and teachers at Springville High School who wanted to exhibit and promote original artwork. The salon has been held annually since that time except during World War II when fuel and other goods were rationed nationwide. The salon is open to all Utah artists working in any media. Each artist may submit up to two works of art created within the last three years. Works over three years old are not eligible. The entrants to the exhibit come from many backgrounds. professional artists who enter their art for consideration, but many others are amateurs. There is a wide variety of art mediums including oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, traditional sculpture, mixed media and assemblage sculpture, photography and digital media. Overall, the exhibit showcases the diversity and quality of contemporary Utah art. One tradition of the Spring Salon is the Penny Vote. Early in the history of

the show, contestants for Art Queen from the high school received votes as pennies were cast into a box. The contestant with the most pennies was selected as the Art Queen and the money went toward new art purchases for the museum. This Penny Vote has now evolved into a popular vote for selected pieces of art that are included in the show. This along with other activities for museum visitors makes attendance more of an interactive experience. 19

Nestle 5K Family Fun Run kicks off Art City Days

The annual Nestle Art City Days 5K Family Fun Run will kick off Art City Days on Saturday, June 2. The race will be begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. at Springville High School, 1205 E. 900 South. Springville appreciates the Nestle company for sponsoring this race. 2018 marks the 30th year this 5K has been conducted. Join with the 2,600 other runners, joggers and walkers participating in this popular event. All ages and abilities are welcome. There will be prize drawings available for all participants. This year, the race will have new bib numbers with radio frequency ID technology (disposable transponders) that will speed up the finish line. Please follow the instructions carefully to ensure your bib is not damaged. The race will begin at SHS and travel east along River Bottom Road, then go north along Cove Street (2400 East), then west along Canyon Road, south on 1700 East, then west again on 900 South to the high school where the race will finish around the SHS track. Water will only be provided at the finish line. For safety reasons dogs, bicycles and scooters are not allowed in the race. Due to the size of the race, race entries are no longer processed manually and all race entries must be submitted online. To register, visit www.artcitydays.com. Art City Days Talent Festival highlights local talent On Saturday, June 2, some of the most talented people in Springville will perform as part of the 2018 Art City Days Talent Festival. Performers were chosen for this

Hometown Rodeo planned in Springville Springville City will again present its Hometown Rodeo at the Springville Arena during the 2018 Art City Days celebration. The rodeo is produced for the city by the Hobble Creek Riding Club. Local stock contractor Rocking B Rodeos will be welcomed back along with Utahâ€™s own announcer Monroe Magnuson. The rodeo will be held on Saturday, June 2, at the Springville Arena, 767 W. 1600 South, Springville. Pre-show activities will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the rodeo at 7 p.m. Bleacher seating is limited, so audience members are invited to bring their own folding chairs. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets will be sold at the gate. Please no outside food or drink. Rodeo concessions will be offered by the Springville Rotary Club. Find the hidden item in Medallion Treasure Hunt Springville residents will be challenged to become super sleuths and use clues to find a special hidden item as part of the Art City Days Medallion Treasure Hunt. Each day from Monday, June 4, through Thursday, June 7, at 9 a.m., a single clue will be revealed on the Springville City website that will lead searchers to a special Springville medallion hidden somewhere in the community. Each clue will be somewhat cryptic, so it will require deductive thinking to put each part together and find the medallion. The clues will be posted at www.springville.org/art-city-days/medallion. In past years, the medallion has been found out in the open, but it has sometimes been in a public building. There will be a message on the medallion giving specific instructions to the person or group that finds it, which could result in winning valuable prizes including a $50 Walmart gift card and a gift basket full of Springville Swag. After the four days of clues, a final clue may be released on Friday, June 9, if the medallion hasn’t been found by then. Only one person will know where the medallion is hidden, so peppering city employees with questions will do you no good. Residents are invited to submit a photo of their baby with an entry form by Wednesday, May 30, at 5 p.m. Each entry must include a registration fee of $2 for residents and $5 for non-residents. Kids can create cars at KINDY 500 Each year during Art City Days, the Springville Public Library hosts a party for children ages 2 to 5 years old and their parent. This year, that event will be the second annual KINDY 500. It will be held on Monday, June 4. As part of the KINDY 500, the children will make their own cars out of boxes, drive them at the library, enjoy a snack and watch a puppet show. There will even be a â€œcar washâ€? for each car to drive through! Each child is asked to bring a box to the event and the library will provide all the supplies needed to make their dream car. The annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will be held on Thursday, June 7, beginning at 5:30 p.m. It will end when the champions are crowned! Hot-air balloons to rise during Art City Days For the 24th year, hot-air balloons will rise above Springville during the last two days of Art City Days as part of the celebrationâ€™s Balloon Fest. Early risers will be able to enjoy the colorful spectacle of flames filling the balloons will hot air until they rise from the ground, then slowly lift into the air. The Balloon Fest will be held on Friday, June 8, and Saturday, June 9, beginning at 6:30 a.m. each day. The balloons will launch from the grassy field at Cherry Creek Elementary School, 484 S. 200 East, Springville. Admission is free. Spectators are encouraged to bring blankets and breakfast and enjoy watching the balloons fill up and lift off. Along with the excitement of experiencing the balloons up close, prizes and candy are tossed out as each balloon launches. There will be free face painting for the children and fun for all ages. The Balloon Fest also includes the Orvil Anderson Cup Competition in which balloon pilots compete to show off their skills. Major General Orvil Arson Anderson, a pioneer balloonist, was born in Springville on May 2, 1895. In 1935, he and Albert William Stevens set a record by reaching a height of 72,395 feet (nearly 14 miles) in their helium balloon Explorer II. This record stood until 1956. This is a great event for the community and everyone is encouraged to participate in the fun. Bring a camera to take advantage of some great photo opportunities. Special thanks go to W.W. Kids can join children’s parade Children of elementary school age and younger will have the chance to decorate their bikes, tricycles, scooters, Big Wheels and wagons and celebrate Art City Days at the TLC for Kids Children’s Parade on Friday, June 8. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. sharp in front of Grant School, 105 S. 400 East, Springville. The parade is open to children elementary school age and younger and admission is free. Children are encouraged to dress up for the parade and decorate their modes of transportation. No motorized vehicles will be allowed in the parade. For the safety of all the children participating, it is asked that 44

participants wear proper safety gear. The parade will begin at Grant School and proceed east toward Springville Junior High School. The parade will continue around the block past the junior high and back to Grant School. TLC will provide snow cones to all participants at the end of the parade. After the parade, children are invited to proceed to the Springville Museum of Art and participate in the Children’s Art Festival. Art museum to host Children’s Art Festival

A wide variety of art-related activities will be available free of charge for local children during the 2018 Children’s Art Festival at the Springville Museum of Art on Friday, June 8. The festival will be held on the grounds of the museum from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day. Admission is free; the museum is located at 126 E. 400 South in Springville. Each year, the Children’s Art Festival presents a variety of booths where children can experience different kinds of art. This year, more than 20 art experiences will be available including face painting. Live entertainment will be presented throughout the event by local performance groups. Grand Parade planned for June 9 Voted one of the best parades in Utah County for the last three years, the annual Art City Days Grand Parade will be held on Saturday, June 9, beginning at 10 a.m. More than 100 entries including floats, marching bands, antique vehicles, equestrian groups and more will make their way through Springville that morning as crowds of people cheer them on. The parade will begin at Buckley Avenue and 400 South and then travel west down 400 South to Main Street. The

parade will then turn north and make it way down Main Street to 200 North where the parade will end. Once again, a parade announcer will be stationed in front of City Hall at 110 S. Main to introduce and describe the parade entries as they make their way up Main Street. Blankets and/or chairs can be set up along the parade route with the property ownersâ€™ permission. Please do not block driveways or sidewalks. Be aware that automatic sprinklers may damage items put out along the parade route.

Legends Motorcycles plans Block Party Birthday Bash Legends Motorcycles & Museum, the Side Car Cafe and the Strap Tank Brewery will host a Block Party Birthday Bash on Saturday, June 9, from noon to 10 p.m. as part of Art City Days. This event will include live music, a Harley Davidson stunt show, childrenâ€™s games and a live radio broadcast by KBER 101.1 among other activities. Everything will happen at the Legends Motorcycle Compound, 596 S. 1750 East, Springville. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Food trucks including Family Lemonade, Kona Ice and Art City Donuts will be on hand at the event from noon to 5 p.m. The Beer Garden will be open from noon to 10 p.m. with $3 beer. Pioneer Museum offers view of the past The Daughters of Utah Pioneers’ Springville-Mapleton Pioneer Museum will be open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 9. The museum is located at 175 S. Main in Springville. The pioneer museum houses historical items from the Springville and Mapleton area stretching back into the 1800s. Visitors to the museum can view wall photos, photo albums and newspaper clippings depicting many Springville and Mapleton pioneers. Display cases contain items such as farming and carpentry tools, weapons, personal items, clothing, dishes and children’s dolls. Visitors can also do research about an ancestor or other individual using journals, histories and scrapbooks of newspaper clip-

pings. In the children’s activity room, children can learn pioneer games and do other activities. The museum is run by volunteers. It is maintained by the Springville-Mapleton Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Company. The Springville-Mapleton Pioneer Museum is one of 74 pioneer museums run by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers in Utah. The museum is open to the public on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. from March through November. Admission is free.

Sail the pond at Duct Tape Regatta Gather a team of friends, family or neighbors and head up to Wayne Bartholomew Family Park following the Grand Parade on Saturday, June 9, to participate in the Art City Days Duct Tape Regatta. This event will have teams building boats out of cardboard and duct tape and attempting to paddle around the pond at the park. Anyone can participate in this event, which will be conducted from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the park, located at 1090 S. 2900 East in Springville. Each team entering the regatta can have from two to 10 members. The teams will each receive a stack of cardboard and three rolls of duct tape and then be given 30 minutes to build the most sea-worthy boat and paddle they can using those materials. One member of the team will then race the boat around a buoy in the middle of the pond. The first team to paddle around the buoy and back to shore without sinking will win. Those wishing to participate should go to www.springville.org/art-city-days/regatta/ and download the 2018 Release Form as well as instructions for registering a team. There will be enough materials available that day for a maximum of 30 teams. 54

Landsharks to perform popular beach band music A band paying tribute to the beach music of the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett will present a free concert on Saturday, June 9, wrapping up the 2018 Art City Days celebration with a high-energy performance and a spectacular fireworks show. The Landsharks, a Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band as well as a Beach Boys Tribute Band, is one of the most well-known, wellliked and in-demand bands in the country. They have performed throughout the world at thousands of concerts, festivals and events. The Landsharks will begin their performance at 8 p.m. in the outdoor amphitheater at the Spring Acres Arts Park, 700 S. 1300 East, Springville (just northeast of Springville High School). Admission is free. Those attending can come early and enjoy a picnic on the lawn around the stage or enjoy concessions provided on site by a Food Truck Roundup. Audience members can bring their own blankets or lawn chairs to sit on as chair and bleacher seating at the park is limited. The fireworks show will start immediately after the concert, with those in the arts park having the best seats to view the show. Members of The Landsharks create a fun, interactive band that is very entertaining and knows how to get a crowd going. They are excellent, top-notch musicians who are also great showmen. Jimmy Buffett liked The Landsharks so much that he hired them, on the spot, to be the house band at his brand new Margaritaville Cafe at Universal Studios. They have also played on stage with Jimmy Buffet in concert in Key West. The band has also opened for the Beach Boys in concert in North Carolina and Florida. As extremely talented artists, the Landsharksâ€™ members also have a huge song list of many different styles of music, including many popular favorites. The Landsharks have performed at the Super Bowl several times as well as more than 100 times at Disney World.
