Art City Days Committee Message
T
his year, the Art City Days committee has chosen a theme that really represents all that Springville is about during its annual city celebration. Here in the “Art City,” we continue to keep life exciting and focused on the citizens, and during Art City Days we hope that all can enjoy some part of the celebration. As one of the first celebrations of summer, Art City Days has become more and more popular each year, drawing not only from Springville but the surrounding valley. This year, there are some new additions to the celebration; the most notable will be a new carnival. We have contracted with Brown’s Amusements this year, thinking a change could add some “coloring outside of the lines” to Art City Days. We have also contracted with a new fireworks company, Firestorm Pyrotechnics Inc. located right here in Springville, so the culmination of the celebration

should be better than ever. This year’s free concert at the Spring Acres Arts Park will feature an ’80s tribute band that will be playing all kinds of great hits from the past. There will also be some food trucks at the park, so plan to get there early and enjoy the evening on Saturday night. This year, there will be two outdoor movies shown at the Spring Acres Arts Park - “Disney’s Moana” on Monday, June 5, and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” on Friday, June 9. They both should be very popular and will start at dusk each day. The parade on Saturday is continually voted one of the best in the county each year along with Art City Days as a whole, according to a Daily Herald readers poll, so come out and enjoy the many events that make up Art City Days. Alan and Carol Curtis named parade grand marshals
S
pringville residents Alan and Carol Curtis have been named grand marshals of the 2017 Art City Days Grand Parade. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, and travel down 400 South and Main Street. Alan Loy Curtis was raised in Springville where he was active in youth football, baseball, and the rifle club. He graduated from Springville High School in 1963 where he was active in drama and sports. He played offensive and defensive tackle for football. He also participated in wrestling and baseball. Alan attended Snow College on a football scholarship, playing tackle for the Badgers. He was also very active in choir, drama and other clubs on campus and graduated from Snow with his associate’s degree. Carol Ann Jacobsen Curtis was raised in Salina and graduated from North Sevier High School in 1963 where she participated band and choir and sang solos and in a trio. She also sang in assemblies, church meetings, for the Lion’s Club and at other civic functions. For two summers after graduation, she worked as a camp counselor at the LDS Church’s Gooseberry Youth Camp in Salina Canyon. She received a music scholarship to Snow College and began attending there in the fall of 1963. While there she participated in many activities including concert band, pep band, madrigals, assemblies, Alan and Carol Curtis and their children Kimberly, dances and graduation programs. She chaired the Miss Snow Contest in 1965, one year after she was Katy, Courtney and Kelly. crowned Miss North Sevier in 1964. she was expecting her first baby. On Nov. 11, 1966, It was at Snow College that Alan and Carol met. They married in the Manti LDS Temple on March 19, their first child was born, Kelly Alan Curtis. Their second son, Courtney Jacobsen Curtis, was born at 1965. They have since lived in Ephraim, Provo and Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, Springville as well as Omaha, Nebraska; and Carter on July 9, 1968. Alan took a job with Boys Clubs of Lake, Iowa. Omaha and worked extra jobs to make ends meet. GRAND MARSHALS, from page 8 they adopted their two beautiful Korean daughters Katy (Kim Eun Sung) and Kimberly (Kim Na Sung). They quickly outgrew their little home and soon moved up the block a few houses to 524 E. Center. They have lived there since February of 1977, 40 years this year. Carol has been involved in music her entire life. She has served in music positions in her church and joined the Springville Musettes in 1966, continuing as a member of that choir until a couple of years ago (other than living in Omaha for four years). She does not sing with them at the present time due to health problems. She has sung for many funerals and civic functions here in Springville. Carol is an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and she enjoys her Book Club and friends. After moving back to Springville, Alan worked construction until he was given the job of recreation and community education director for the city of Springville. He served on the city recreation board for seven years. He served the city and school district for 28 years. He has loved providing recreation for thousands of our youth, offering about 25 Community Education classes to adults and all ages of children,
and keeping everyone happy with the temperature at the Springville Community Pool. He loved to see our city look beautiful and wellmanicured and to see its parks busy with kids and adults playing summer sports. Alan was instrumental in getting several parks built such as Bird Park, Clyde Park, the Spring Acres Arts Park (upper and lower), Spring Creek, Big Hollow, Hunters Valley and Child Park. He re-did Memorial Park’s ball diamonds and worked on the beginnings of the Sports Park in the West Fields as well as helping with small neighborhood parks. He spearheaded the upgrading and enhancement of the South Main entrance into Springville including the welcome sign. He started Youth Soccer in Springville, serving boys and girls in Cub Soccer through Teen Soccer. He began an after-school program for at-risk youth to be tutored in academic as well as musical skills. It was held in the old grocery store across from the old city building. He also helped create the skateboard park, started Flag Football to help prepare young boys for tackle football and developed a junior golf program. other jobs for the committee. He organized fun runs and 5-K runs and served on committees for Art City Days. He was always out in the community monitoring his recreation schedules and events. Along with his job, he served as bishop of the Springville 10th Ward for five years. Alan began his coaching career with Springville High football in 1967 as part of an internship under Coach Mike Jacobsen. This opportunity turned into a long coaching career. He coached football during his Boys Club years and with Springville High for a total of 48 years! After 28 years with Nebo School District and Springville City, Alan retired in 2006. Alan loves working with the youth of this area. He has a way of disciplining and loving the youth he works with. Alan has always had the best interest of the youth of Springville in mind. He loves being with the young people and teaching them about athletics and life. Alan is a true Red Devil through and through. Alan and Carol have four children: Kelly, Courtney, Katy and Kimberly. They also have 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Jerry Gardner named Springville Resident Artist
S
pringville resident Jerry Gardner is likely most well-known for the creative and colorful snow sculptures he builds outside his house each winter. However, these sculptures are just a small part of the artistic creations and worldwide adventures Gardner has been part of during his lifetime. Gardner will be honored as Springville’s Resident Artist during the 2017 Art City Days celebration June 3-10. He will ride in the Art City Days parade on June 10. “I’m just a creative guy that likes to make people smile,” he said. Gardner is originally from Provo. He attended Provo High School where he was named a Sterling Scholar in art, then studied art at Brigham Young University. The economy at the time was not supporting artists as much as he had hoped, however, so he switched his focus, eventually transferring to Utah Valley University and graduating from UVU in collision repair. He utilized his art skills when working on cars and was named national auto body champion through a competition sponsored by the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. He also served a mission in Dallas, Texas, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After college graduation, Gardner taught in the UVU auto body shop for a year, then went to work for Rocky Mountain Helicopters managing its fiberglass and paint department. He designed and painted helicopters for Life Flight. Following his work at Rocky Mountain, he moved to Catalina Island in California and studied art with Roger Upton for four years. During this time, he was creating drawings and oil paintings and selling his See artist, page 12

Sometimes he would do paintings of people’s boats in the harbor and then give them to the owners in exchange for cruises on their boats. After his time on Catalina Island, Gardner moved back to Utah, purchasing a home near the 400 South and Canyon Road intersection in Springville. He said he picked the home so he could hang glide off of Camel’s Back and land in his front yard. While he never actually landed in his yard, he did land in the vacant lot across the street where a church now stands. Gardner started an auto body shop in Utah where he worked on restoring show cars such as Ferraris, Maseratis and Lamborghinis. He also worked with Don and Rick Vesco and their efforts to create a streamliner that would reach record speeds on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Another of his interests is mining history, and Gardner enjoys exploring and painting scenes inside abandoned mine shafts. A collapse in one shaft trapped Gardner for a week until he could dig himself out, but he finished the painting he was working on. Gardner also worked in the old Osmond studios in
Orem constructing movie sets as well as for the BYU Museum of Art where he created the spaces where high-profile exhibits such as items from Masada and the Dead Sea Scrolls were shown. He has been creating snow sculptures outside his home ever since he moved to Springville. They have become so popular that entire families and sometimes vans full of people will come to take their picture with the latest sculpture. Some people have even donated money to help him pay for the spray paint to color the sculptures. “I’ve got to have a creative outlet in the winter and this is just my creative outlet,” Gardner said, adding that the sculptures are a way for him to give back to the community and make people smile. Fans of his snow sculptures can see his work yearround in other Springville locations as well. Gardner painted the mural on the front of La Casita on Main Street and also assisted in painting the interiors of the new Strap Tank Brewery, Legends Motorcycles and the Sidecar Cafe at Legends. He creates metal sculptures as well, some of which can be seen at Legends Motorcycles. “It’s just a passion to create something from nothing. I always want to be a part of the creative process,” Gardner said.

Citizen of the Year
Springville Citizen of the Year: Sonny Braun
A
t the young age of 32, Sonny Braun became the first head professional at Hobble Creek Golf Course in Springville. Until his retirement in 2014 - 48 years later - he was the only head pro at Hobble Creek. That’s a Utah record. No other golf course in Utah has had the original pro maintain his position that long. Sonny and his brother Jerry and sister Mary grew up loving golf. Sonny and Jerry both became golf professionals and Mary became the reigning women’s club champion at Timpanogos Golf Course for the better part of three decades. Sonny started in golf at the age of 12 when he began working at the original Timpanogos Golf Course. He worked at Timp for a period of 17 years, interrupted for two years by service in the Army. During those years at Timp, he worked under the tutelage of Jimmy Thompson, Bill Johnston and Dave Crowton. While in the Army, he served as assistant professional to Ben Cavalier at Fort Sheridan Golf Course. In 1963 he went to Monterey Peninsula Country Club as an assistant pro with John Geertsen Jr. He maintained that position until he was invited back to Utah County to be the head pro at Hobble Creek. All totaled, he has served in golf shops for 68 of his 83 years of life. During his years at Hobble Creek, he established strong men’s and women’s golf associations and worked closely with various mayors and city councils to build a solid core of loyal Springville golfers. Hobble Creek, because of its unusual beauty and serenity, attracts thousands of golfers from throughout Utah, but Sonny saw that it retained the feel of a small community golf course. As the golf course icon, Sonny conscientiously worked on linking the community to the course, and as a result, the citizens of Springville

Sonny Braun take an unusual pride of ownership in their golf course. To them, Hobble Creek is their country club. Sonny was a fine player, holding the Hobble Creek Course record at one time with a 63, but he devoted his golf focus to administration and teaching. He also developed a talent in golf repair and refinishing clubs and became a craftsman at it. He has won numerous awards including Merchandiser of the Year, the Bill Strausbaugh Award for Public Relations and the Utah Section PGA “Gentleman Jeff” Award. The Art City Amateur Tournament he established is a fixture in Utah golf and now is named after him. Sonny married Laurel Turner (deceased) 57 years ago and they have three sons: Scott (deceased), Steve and Shea.

The children and grandchildren of those who dined at La Casita when it first opened in October 1978 are the restaurant’s core customers today. La Casita was founded by Luis Muzquiz Sr. and his wife Luz. They moved to Utah after working as cooks and servers for many years at various Mexican restaurants in Southern California. With encouragement from customer Charlie Hesselgesser, who moved from Southern California to Koosharem, Utah, Luis Muzquiz Sr. purchased the small building at 333 N. Main in Springville that once housed Siesta Village Restaurant, which was operated for years by the Domingo Rodriquez family. “I think La Casita became successful from the beginning and continued strong for 25 years because of my dad’s outgoing personality and the recipes he learned from his mother,” Luis Muzquiz Jr. said. In March 2003, Luis Muzquiz Jr. and wife Katie purchased La Casita, and they have continued to serve the restaurant’s original cuisine for the past 14

he 1980s tribute band Radical Revolution will present a totally awesome performance on Saturday, June 10, at 8 p.m. at the Spring Acres Arts Park, 700 S. 1300 East, Springville. Springville Playhouse presents popular “Forum”

s it celebrates its 70th year of producing theater in Springville, the Springville Playhouse will present a reprise of one of its most popular and beloved productions ever during the 2017 Art City Days celebration: “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” The show will be presented on Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays from June 2 to June 24 at Merit College Preparatory Academy, 1440 W. Center, Springville. The doors will open each evening at 7 p.m. and the shows will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each ($8 for students and senior citizens) and may be purchased at the door. This hilarious, musical romp that tells the story of a slave, Pseudolus, and his attempt to win his freedom by helping his master’s son attract the attention of the girl next door, with whom the young man has fallen in love. 93rd annual Spring Salon exhibit on display
T
he 93rd annual Spring Salon, one of the longest-running art shows in the state of Utah, is now open at the Springville Museum of Art. The Spring Salon is a juried exhibition showcasing pieces by Utah artists from many backgrounds that were created using a variety of mediums. A total of 886 entries were received and judged and 242 pieces were accepted into this year’s exhibit. The Spring Salon will be on exhibit through July 8 at the museum, located at 126 E. 400 South in Springville. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. The museum is closed Sundays, Mondays and holidays (except for special events). For more information about the Spring Salon or other events and exhibits at the museum, visit smofa.org. Spring Salon award winners were announced at an artist’s reception on April 26 by Dr. Rita Wright, director of the museum, along with County Commissioner Greg Graves and Springville City Councilman Rick Child. The exhibition is sponsored by Springville City, Utah County and the George Q. Morris foundation. The Spring Salon was first held in 1922. It was

begun by students and teachers at Springville High School who wanted to exhibit and promote original artwork. The salon has been held annually since that time except during World War II when fuel and other goods were rationed nationwide. The salon is open to all Utah artists working in any media. Each artist may submit up to two works of art created within the last three years. Works over three years old are not eligible. The entrants to the exhibit come from many backgrounds. There are many professional artists who enter their art for consideration, but many others are amateurs. There is a wide variety of art mediums including oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, traditional sculpture, mixed media and assemblage sculpture, photography and digital media. One tradition of the Spring Salon is the Penny Vote. Early in the history of the show, contestants for Art Queen from the high school received votes as pennies were cast into a box. The contestant with the most pennies was selected as the Art Queen and the money went toward new art purchases for the museum. This Penny Vote has now evolved into a popular vote for selected pieces of art that are included in the show. This along with other activities for museum visitors makes attendance more of an interactive experience.

Nestle 5K Family Fun Run set for June 3

he annual Nestle Art City Days 5K Family Fun Run will kick off Art City Days on Saturday, June 3. The race will be begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. at Springville High School, 1205 E. 900 South. Springville appreciates the Nestle company for sponsoring this race. 2017 marks the 29th year this 5K has been conducted. Join with the 2,600 other runners, joggers and walkers participating in this popular event. All ages and abilities are welcome. There will be prize drawings available for all participants. The race will begin at SHS and travel east along River Bottom Road, then go north along Cove Street (2400 East), then west along Canyon Road, south on 1700 East, then west again on 900 South to the high school where the race will finish around the SHS track.
For safety reasons, dog, bicycle and scooters are not allowed in the race. Due to the size of the race, race entries are no longer processed manually and all race entries must be submitted online. Find the hidden item in Medallion Treasure Hunt
S
pringville residents will be challenged to become super sleuths and use clues to find a special hidden item as part of the Art City Days Medallion Treasure Hunt. Each day from Monday, June 5, through Thursday, June 8, at 9 a.m., a single clue will be revealed on the Springville City website that will lead searchers to a special Springville medallion hidden somewhere in the community. Each clue will be somewhat cryptic, so it will require deductive thinking to put each part together and find the medallion. The clues will be posted at www.springville.org/artcity-days/medallion.
In past years, the medallion has been found out in the open, but it has sometimes been in a public building. There will be a message on the medallion giving specific instruction to the person or group that finds it, which could result in winning valuable prizes. After the four days of clues, a final clue may be released on Friday, June 9, if the medallion hasn’t been found by then. Only one person will know where the medallion is hidden, so peppering city employees with questions will do you no good. Be very specific in your search as you get closer to finding the medallion, but most of all, have fun!

hotos of Springville’s most beautiful babies will be on display as part of the 2017 Art City Days Baby Photo Contest. Residents were invited to submit photos of their babies ranging in age from 0 to 24 months old during May. All the submitted baby photos will now be displayed at the Springville Civic Center, 110 S. Main, from June 5 through 9. The public is invited to view the photos and vote for their favorite. One ballot per person will be allowed each day, and the person must be present to vote. Voting will close at 4 p.m. on June 9. The votes will be tabulated and the results posted on the Baby Photo Contest web page. ach year during Art City Days, the Springville Public Library hosts a party for children ages 2 to 5 years old and their parent. This year, that event will be the KINDY 500 on Monday, June 5. As part of the KINDY 500, the children will make their own cars out of boxes, drive them at the library and then watch a puppet show. he Civic Center Park in downtown Springville will be the center of activity during this year’s Art City Days celebration. In addition to the annual carnival, the park will host a wide variety of food vendors as well as a craft boutique. The park is located at 50 S. Main. The food and craft vendor booths will be open at the following times: Wednesday, June 7, 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, June 9, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Kiwanis Scone Booth is legendary in Springville, and it will again operate during this year’s Art City Days. he popular Springville Firemen’s Breakfast will again be held as part of Art City Days this year, with residents encouraged to get up early and enjoy a hot breakfast at the fire sta-
tion. The event will be held at the Springville Fire Station, located at 75 W. Center, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 8, 9 and 10. On Thursday, breakfast will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. On Friday and Saturday, breakfast will be served from 6 to 10 a.m. The menu will consist of a traditional firehouse breakfast with eggs, pancakes, ham and a drink. ounce houses, a climbing wall and other fun activities for children ages 3 to 12 will fill the Spring Acres Arts Park on Thursday, June 8, as part of the annual Art City Days Fun-A-Rama. This popular event attracts hundreds of children to the park each year to have fun in the sun for one low price. Just $5 will purchase a wrist band that will allow a child to join in all the activities and ride on all the attractions. Children younger than 3 are also welcome and should be able to participate in most activities. The Fun-A-Rama will start at 11 a.m. at the arts park, located at 700 S. 1300 East in Springville. New carnival coming to town this year
T
his year, Art City Days will welcome a new carnival to its downtown area. Brown’s Amusements, out of Mesa, Arizona, will provide a wide variety of rides for both youngsters and thrill enthusiasts from June 7 to June 10 at the Civic Center Park, 110 S. Main. A midway will also be available along with plenty of carnival food. The carnival will begin with Family Night on Wednesday, June 7. That evening, the carnival will open at 6 p.m. and close at 10 p.m. Thursday, June 8, will be Buddy Day. Those attending the carnival that day and buying a wristband for themselves can buy a second wristband for their buddy at half price. The carnival will open at 1 p.m. this day and close at 10 p.m. On Friday, June 9, the carnival will be open from 1 to 10:30 p.m. On Saturday, June 10, the carnival will be open from noon to 10:30 p.m. Carnival tokens will cost $1, and rides will require three to six tokens each. Wristbands will be $30 or $20 in advance. The Midway will close each evening by 10 p.m. Brown’s Amusements is owned and operated by Sherry and Danny Brown. They built the company with many hours of hard work and perseverance. Sherry and Danny grew up in the amusement business and spent a lot of time learning from the best. The couple says they were fortunate enough to have spent many years on the road with some of the industry's best operators. With that experience behind them, they decided it was time to branch out on their

own and make a name for themselves. In 2007, 2010 and again in 2015, Brown’s Amusements was awarded the prestigious Outdoor Amusements Business Association’s Circle of Excellence award. This award is based upon a show’s ability to excel in the areas of safety, service, operations and administrative duties. Shows are inspected by a team of independent consultants for the OABA who review all the show’s internal operational books, safety records and daily operations for two days. Brown’s Amusements is one of only four carnivals on the West Coast to have the honor of saying it is part of the Circle of Excellence family. It is a difficult award to receive and those obtaining it are re-certified every two to five years. The Browns strive to maintain the best-possible midway anywhere. The Browns thoroughly inspect every ride at each event and put a lot of time into training their staff. The Browns’ motto, “Team Effort,” is apparent throughout the midway. Every employee is trained from day one that it's a team effort and they can rely on one another to get the job done. They have a comprehensive employee training program that ensures their employees will be properly trained and educated. Their attention to detail has helped build its impressive reputation amongst its peers. Brown’s Amusements is currently a member of many industry associations such as the Arizona Fairs Association, the OABA, the Rocky Mountain Fairs Association, the Showmen's League of America and many more.

Balloon Fest
Hot-air balloons to rise during Art City Days
F
or the 23rd year, hot-air balloons will again rise above Springville during the last two days of Art City Days as part of the celebration’s Balloon Fest. Early risers will be able to enjoy the colorful spectacle of flames filling the balloons will hot air until they rise from the ground, then slowly lift into the air. The Balloon Fest will be held on Friday, June 9, and Saturday, June 10, beginning at 6:30 a.m. each day. The balloons will launch from the grassy field at Cherry Creek Elementary School, 484 S. 200 East, Springville. Admission is free. Spectators are encouraged to bring blankets and breakfast and enjoy watching the balloons fill up and lift off. Along with the excitement of experiencing the balloons up close, colorful balls are tossed out as each

balloon launches that can be redeemed for treats and fun prizes. There will be free face painting for the children and fun for all ages. The Balloon Fest also includes the Orvil Anderson Cup Competition in which balloon pilots compete to show off their skills. Major General Orvil Arson Anderson, a pioneer balloonist, was born in Springville on May 2, 1895. In 1935, he and Albert William Stevens set a record by reaching a height of 72,395 feet (nearly 14 miles) in their helium balloon Explorer II. This record stood until 1956. This is a great event for the community and everyone is encouraged to participate in the fun. Bring a camera to take advantage of some great photo opportunities. Special thanks go to W.W. Kids can join children’s parade
C
hildren will have their chance to decorate their bikes, tricycles, scooters, Big Wheels and wagons and celebrate Art City Days with their own parade on Friday, June 9. The TLC for Kids Children's Parade will begin at 10 a.m. sharp in front of Grant School, 105 S. 400 East, Springville. The parade is open to children elementary school age and younger and admission is free. Children are encouraged to dress up for the parade and decorate their modes of transportation. No motorized vehicles will be allowed in the parade.

For the safety of all the children participating, it is asked that participants wear proper safety gear. The parade will begin at Grant School and proceed east toward Springville Junior High School. The parade will continue around the block past the junior high and back to Grant School. After the parade, children are invited to proceed to the Springville Museum of Art and participate in the Children’s Art Festival. Children can experience many forms of art at Children’s Art Festival
A
wide variety of art-related activities will be available free of charge for local children during the 2017 Children’s Art Festival at the Springville Museum of Art on Friday, June 9. The festival will be held on the grounds of the museum from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day. Admission is free; the museum is located at 126 E. 400 South in Springville. Each year, the Children’s Art Festival presents a variety of booths where children can experience different kinds of art. This year, more than 20 art booths will be available with various activities including face painting. Live entertainment will be presented throughout the event by local performance groups. Concessions will also be available for purchase. The museum expresses thanks to its Children’s Art Festival supporters: Springville City, the Springville Arts Commission, the Springville Kiwanis Club, the StateWide Art Partnership and Crayola.

Grand Parade planned for June 10
T
he 2017 Art City Days Grand Parade will be held on Saturday, June 10, beginning at 10 a.m. More than 100 entries including floats, marching bands, antique vehicles, equestrian groups and more will make their way through Springville that morning as crowds of people cheer them on. The Art City Days Grand Parade has been voted one of the best parades in Utah County for the last three years. It will begin at Buckley Avenue and 400 South and then travel west down 400 South to Main Street. The parade will then turn north and make it way down Main Street to 200 North where the parade will end. Once again, a parade announcer will be stationed in front of the Civic Center Park at 50 S. Main who will describe the parade entries as they pass by. Blankets and/or chairs can be set up along the parade route with the property owners’ permission. Please do not block driveways or sidewalks. Be aware that automatic sprinklers may damage items put out along the parade route.

Springville fireworks company to light up Art City Days
O
n Saturday, June 10, for the first time in its history, Springville fireworks company Firestorm Pyrotechnics Inc. will provide fireworks for Art City Days, its hometown celebration. “We are going to paint the sky from the floor to the ceiling with every color imaginable,” said Steve Shriber, president of Firestorm Pyrotechnics. “Everybody will be staring in slack-jawed wonder, I can tell you that.” The Art City Days fireworks show will be launched at 10 p.m. following the free family concert on Saturday, June 10, at the Spring Acres Arts Park, 700 South 1300 East, Springville. Performing that night at 8 p.m. will be Radical Revolution, a band specializing in the hits of the 1980s. In keeping with the theme of the evening, the fireworks will be choreographed to a

selection of 1980s music. The best place to view the fireworks will be inside the arts park where the music will be played over the sound system. Those outside of the arts park can listen to the music on 99.9 FM. Shriber said Firestorm Pyrotechnics, located at 187 E. 400 South in Springville, is the only fireworks company in the country that launches only computerchoreographed shows. Other companies may use computers for their larger shows, but Firestorm brings this expertise to every show it does. Local residents have seen Firestorm’s work at the American’s Freedom Festival at Provo’s Stadium of Fire, Mapleton City’s July 24th celebration and the Payson Golden Onion Days celebration. fIREWORKS, from page 46 launches fireworks shows across the country, however; it is booked every weekend this year from the last weekend in May through October. It was the Stadium of Fire that originally got Shriber into the fireworks business. He came to Utah to go to school and got hired to work at the Stadium of Fire event building set pieces. During his second year, he was promoted to be production manager. “I was always interested in energetic materials, but that really sparked my interest,” he said. He continued working for the Stadium of Fire while going to school, then graduated and went to work for an aerospace company. On the side, however, he was shooting fireworks for various clients all over the world. He became known for his skill in choreographing fireworks shows to music using the computer. His best friend Jeff Hendrix had helped design and launch the shows since they began working in fireworks and the Stadium of Fire in 1992. In 2006, they partnered with Dr. Brian Trapnell and Richard Ballantyne and formed the company Firestorm Pyrotechnics. Shriber and Hendrix designed
the firing system their company uses, which is completely computer controlled and wireless. After being in business about two years, Firestorm purchased the company that had done fireworks for the Stadium of Fire for 30 years, and the company has continued to grow ever since. “This year is our biggest year ever,” Shriber said. The company imports their fireworks from all over the world, sending out representatives to various countries to meet with manufacturers and review their products. “We try to get the latest and greatest and safest innovations in the industry,” he said. With the many regulations and requirements attached to transporting fireworks, getting them to Utah from around the world is a complex endeavor. It’s a huge challenge, but Firestorm is now an expert at it. Still, it can take up to two years from the time an order is placed to the moment when a shell is launched and lights up the sky, Shriber said. Springville’s show will be similar in nature to what residents have seen in Mapleton but custom-tailored for the Springville audience. “We’ve wanted to do Springville’s fireworks,” Shriber said. “That’s our hometown. We’ve wanted to do them from the beginning of time.”

Legends Motorcycles offers Bike Show, BBQ

National Guard Armory Open House planned Stop by the Springville National Guard Armory after the Art City Days Grand Parade and meet some of Springville’s hometown heroes. The National Guard Armory Open House will be held on Saturday, June 10, from noon to 3 p.m. Those attending will get a close-up look at some of the military equipment at the armory. Pioneer Museum offers view of the past
T
he Daughters of Utah Pioneers’ Springville-Mapleton Pioneer Museum will be open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 10. The museum is located at 175 S. Main in Springville. The pioneer museum houses historical items from the Springville and Mapleton area stretching back into the 1800s. Visitors to the museum can view wall photos, photo albums and newspaper clippings depicting many Springville and Mapleton pioneers. Display cases contain items such as farming and carpentry tools, weapons, personal items, clothing, dishes and children’s dolls. Sail the pond at Duct Tape R
G
ather a team of friends, family or neighbors and head up to Wayne Bartholomew Family Park following the Grand Parade on Saturday, June 10, to participate in the Art City Days Duct Tape Regatta. This event will have teams building boats out of cardboard and duct tape and attempting to paddle around the pond at the park. Anyone can participate in this event, which will be conducted from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the park, located at 1090 S. 2900 East in Springville. Each team entering the regatta can have from two to 10 members. The teams will each receive a stack of cardboard and three rolls of duct tape and then be given 30 minutes to

build the most sea-worthy boat and paddle they can using those materials. One member of the team will then race the boat around a buoy in the middle of the pond. The first team to paddle around the buoy and back to shore without sinking will win. Those wishing to participate should go to www.springville.org/art-city-days/regatta/ and download the participant release form. All team members should complete a release form. The forms can then be submitted by emailing them to artcitydays@springville.org by Wednesday, June 7. After that day, participants should simply bring their completed release forms to the regatta. Team pre-registration is recommended so a count can be made of how many teams intend to participate.
