Welcome to the 112th Annual Sanpete County Fair!

It is an honor to welcome you to this year’s Sanpete County Fair as we celebrate our 2026 theme, “Red, White, and MOO.” Over the years, serving as the fair chairmen has given us a unique opportunity to witness firsthand what makes this fair so special. Each year, we get to watch an incredible group of volunteers, committee members, sponsors, exhibitors and community supporters come together with one common goal — creating something meaningful for the people of Sanpete County. The fair doesn’t happen because of one person. It comes to life because of dedicated people who give their time year after year, often behind the scenes and without recognition, simply because they care about this community and the traditions we share. Watching the fair grow from months of planning into a week full of memories, laughter, hard work and celebration is something we never take for granted. This fair represents the best of Sanpete County — our agricultural heritage, our patriotism, our families and the strong sense of community that continues to bring us together generation after generation. Whether you are here to support our youth in the livestock shows, enjoy the rodeo and derby, experience the carnival, visit exhibits, reconnect with friends or simply enjoy time with family, we hope you feel welcomed and proud to be part of this tradition. COMMISSIONERS BREAKFAST SATURDAY, AUGUST 29 7 - 10 A.M. Start your Saturday at the Sanpete County Fair with a hearty breakfast and some hometown hospitality! As part of this year’s “Red, White, and MOO” celebration, the Sanpete County commissioners and county elected officials invite everyone to join them for the annual Commissioners Breakfast The breakfast will be held on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 7 to 10 a.m. Enjoy a delicious breakfast free of charge, cooked and served by your county commissioners and elected officials. The breakfast will be held in the pavilion west of the new Event Center, 521 N. 100 East, Manti. Bring your family, visit with friends and neighbors and kick off a great day at the fair. MISS SANPETE COUNTY & MISS SANPETE TEEN 2026 For more than 71 years, the Miss Sanpete County Scholarship Competition has been a cherished Sanpete County tradition, celebrating education, service, leadership and community involvement. The 2026 Miss Sanpete County Scholarship Competition will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the Snow College Eccles Theatre, 300 E. Center Street, Ephraim. Admission is $10 per person. Proudly affiliated with the Miss America Organization, Miss Sanpete County emphasizes scholarship, personal achievement and community service. The Miss Sanpete County organization strives to create a supportive sisterhood where young women can develop their talents, strengthen their speaking abilities, learn leadership skills and make a meaningful impact through community service. Miss Sanpete County receives a $2,500 scholarship and spends the year representing Sanpete County while promoting a Community Service Initiative of her choice. She also advances to compete at Miss Utah. Throughout the year, the Miss Sanpete County royalty serves at various Sanpete County Fair events, parades, community celebrations, school events and service projects. Their efforts promote volunteerism, leadership and community pride across Sanpete County. The Miss Sanpete County and Miss Sanpete’s Teen competitions are open to eligible young women who meet age and residency requirements. Previous pageant or royalty experience is not required. The Miss Sanpete County Board is led by Director Kristyn Bore and includes Kera Peterson (assistant director), Brandy Lux (secretary), Jessica Lund (judges chair), Kayla Olson (production director), Denise Kroff (donations), and Anna Pettit (social media). Join us on Aug. 8 as we celebrate the talents, achievements and service of Sanpete County’s outstanding young women. AVA JENSEN MISS SANPETE COUNTY 2026 Miss Sanpete County 2026, Ava Jensen of Mt. Pleasant, is a Snow College graduate pursuing a nursing degree. Her Community Service Initiative, “Crisis Smart: First Aid and CPR Awareness,” promotes CPR and first aid education and encourages community preparedness during emergencies. The Miss Sanpete’s Teen program is open to young women ages 12 to 17 and provides opportunities to develop confidence, leadership and service skills. The titleholder receives a $500 cash award and represents Sanpete County at the Miss Utah’s Teen Competition.

KATE CRAVEN MISS SANPETE’S TEEN 2026 Miss Sanpete’s Teen 2026, Kate Craven of Fairview, is attending Mountainland Technical College. Through her initiative, “Fight Like Wyguy: Childhood Cancer Awareness,” she honors the memory of her younger brother Wyatt by raising awareness and supporting children and families affected by childhood cancer.

SCOTT & LILA BARTHOLOMEW Born in Gunnison, Utah, to John Philo and Kathleen Day Bartholomew, Scott Bartholomew has been a lifelong resident of Sanpete County. He graduated from Gunnison Valley High School in 1971. The only time he spent away from the valley was while serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Indiana-Michigan Mission and attending Southern Utah State College (now Southern Utah University), where he earned an associate’s degree in electronics in 1975. Scott began working for Gunnison Telephone Company at the age of 16 and remained with the company throughout his entire career. He loved his work and cherished the opportunity to serve alongside a wonderful company and the outstanding citizens of Gunnison Valley. Through decades of growth and change, he embraced the challenges and opportunities that came with helping GTelCo evolve and thrive. As the field continued to evolve over the years, he earned countless endorsements in telecommunications. While attending SUSC, Scott met Lila Bender, the one who would become his wife and lifelong partner. Lila was born in Bismarck, North Dakota, and lived in Riverdale and Minot before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada, at age 9. She graduated from Southern Nevada Vocational Technical School, earning both her high school diploma and a Certificate of Excellence in Accounting along with a scholarship to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She later transferred to Southern Utah State College, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in biological sciences and received her teaching certificate. Eventually, she earned her master’s degree in education from Grand Canyon University. Lila dedicated 42 years to the South Sanpete School District, first serving part-time before becoming a full-time educator. She treasured the time she spent working with the remarkable children of Sanpete County and considered teaching one of life’s greatest blessings. Scott and Lila were married in March 1976 and made their home in Fayette, where they built a life centered 26 • SANPETE COUNTY FAIRBOOK 2026 • WWW.SANPETECOUNTYFAIR.NET

on faith, family and service. Together, they established their home, raised their five children and worked the family farm. They are the proud parents of Jed, Greg, Jay, Lisa and Kasey and the grateful grandparents of 14 beloved grandchildren. Their greatest joy has been watching their family grow and thrive through the years. Throughout their married life, Scott and Lila have devoted themselves to serving their family, church and community. Both have faithfully served in numerous callings within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. Scott has served his community as a Fayette city councilman, as mayor of Fayette and, for the last 14 years, as a Sanpete County commissioner. Lila dedicated many years working as Fayette’s clerk/ treasurer. Together, they have given countless hours serving on committees, participating in community organizations and working on service projects. Their lives stand as a testament to dedication, hard work, faith and love, a legacy that lives on through their children, grandchildren and the many individuals whose lives they have touched through years of service. Their enduring commitment to family, community and faith has left a lasting impact that will be felt for generations to come.

2026 KING COWBOY KENT CHRISTENSEN

Kent Christensen was born on June 20, 1962, to Mark William and Mary Kay Burgoyne Christensen in Moroni. He had the privilege of being taught and mentored by many great people among his family and community. His first recollection was of Vince Christensen plowing snow off the sidewalks with his draft horse. He would set Kent on the plow with him as he went up and down the streets, whistling as he went. Kent has loved a good willing team on a crisp winter morning ever since. The quiet movement and the smell of horses don’t leave memory easily. His family raised turkeys and were members of Moroni Feed Company and Norbest. While growing up, he learned to care for turkeys. They largely grew range turkeys in portable shelters. They hauled them feed and water and protected them from coyotes, badgers and bobcats. They moved the shelters around the fields, letting the turkeys eat grasshoppers and fertilize the fields. His father had a small herd of Charolais cows that they moved around the county to leased pastures. He has loved having the cattle and moving them down the roadways. In those days, traffic was so sparse that most cars would stop and talk for a while before going on down the road. They knew everybody that passed them on the road. In the fifth grade, Kent had a teacher, Perry Christensen, who changed his young life. He introduced Kent to Will James books like “Smokey the Cowhorse” and “My Life as a Cowboy.” Will James drew wonderful illustrations for his books. Perry Christensen encouraged Kent to learn to draw and to read books. From that time forward, he learned to draw, loved to read and wanted to be a cowboy. Pursuant to this interest, new people entered Kent’s life. Ray Dane Christensen agreed to sell him a 2-yearold mustang filly for $20 of paper route money and help him start her. Kent named her Sox and rode her everywhere. His dad insisted that when Kent could ride her bareback and not be thrown, he would help him buy a saddle. Sears, Roebuck & Co. catalogue. Finally, he was riding like Will James with a saddle and all. Next, Kent enrolled in horse 4-H. Lola Faye Stevens and Ron Jackman were the leaders. To attend county horse shows, a local cattleman, Howard Blackham, lent the 4-H his 2-ton cattle truck. In those days, there were not stock trailers. On show days, they would meet at 6 a.m. to load horses in the truck. Their parents hauled the riders to the show and the horses in a stock truck. They had a grand time. Kent is thankful for the caring adults who guided him when he was young and for the great friendships from those days. Now, with a fine pony, all Kent lacked was cows to be a cowboy. Entering the seventh grade, he used his paper delivery money to buy a Brown Swiss milk cow. His dad fed the cow in exchange for milk for the family. The extra milk was sold to local families and fed to bottle calves. Kent began to accumulate heifer calves and soon had a little bunch of three to four cows that he could run with his dad’s cows. In addition, his dad encouraged his to rent small turkey coops around town, where he raised 6,000 turkeys a year to sell to Moroni Feed Company. A junior high teacher, George Bench, encouraged Kent in FFA judging, speaking and record book contests. On April 11, 1978, his life and his family’s life changed dramatically. His dad and 13-year-old brother Dix went to the Wales Reservoir early in the morning before

school to try out a new canoe they had purchased. At 9:30 a.m., the sheriff came to the high school to pick Kent up; his dad and brother were missing on the reservoir. After a 10-day search, their bodies were recovered from the reservoir. The entire community helped in the search and supported the Christensen family during that time. It was humbling to see everyone helping. His mother was left with three small children and Kent, a 15-year-old boy. They were determined to continue their turkey operation. They sold their cattle and other livestock. Kent attended high school in the mornings and took work release to take care of their turkeys. He completed high school in 1980 and, with his mother’s encouragement, served a church mission to Venezuela from 1980 to 1982. Once again, the community stepped up to help in his absence. Men like Jon Guymon and Glade Livingston were so helpful to her. Upon returning from Venezuela, Kent bought cows, raised turkeys and attended Snow College and then Utah State University. He met his sweetheart, Tammy Shaw, at Snow College and they dated at USU. They were married June 13, 1986. She was from Midvale and

fortunately didn’t know what she was headed for. She learned about brooding and raising turkeys, caring for cattle and taking care of kids. For Kent, she has been not just a marriage partner but a life partner. They have six children — Katrina, Cali, Lara, Travis, Caleb, and Lindee Jo — and they have added spouses and 21 grandchildren to the family. Kent’s children learned to count using dead turkeys, how to wrestle calves without getting kicked and how to gather cattle that you can’t see and hold them until Dad comes. They learned not to poke themselves with the vaccine guns and how to tell when a brand is burned to the hide. Through the years, Kent has been mentored by good men and women who have provided him with their friendship and knowledge about horses, cattle and life — the characteristics of a true cowboy. Many of these mentors were good men in the Jerusalem Cattle Allotment, Oak Creek Cattle Allotment, Moroni Feed Company and USU Extension. The legacy he strives to leave to his children and friends is that same friendship, integrity and knowledge that were given to him. His hope is that the cowboy legacy of friendship, integrity and knowledge will transcend generations to come.

READING CHALLENGE CHILDREN CAN READ TO EARN FREE ADMISSION TO FAIR RODEO

Children in kindergarten through fifth grade during the 2025-26 school year can read books to gain free admission to this year’s Sanpete County Fair Rodeo through the Fun on the Farm Reading Challenge. These children are invited to read 25 books from January through August of 2026, then bring their completed entry form to the Thursday night (Aug. 27) rodeo grandstand gate to get into the rodeo for free. Entry forms may also be found online at sanpetecountyfair.net/event-information. Rules for the Reading Challenge are as follows: • Open to children in kindergarten through fifth grade during the 2025-26 school year. • Children must read 25 books of any length, but the books must be of appropriate age/ability. • Books counted must be read by the child — not a teacher, parent, librarian, guardian, etc. • Books counted may be read from January 2026 through August 2026.

Each book title must be initialed by a parent, guardian or librarian. Incomplete entries cannot be accepted and the form must be completely filled out to receive free entry into the Thursday night rodeo at the Sanpete County Fair. • Children must bring their completed form with required initials to the Thursday night rodeo (Aug. 27, 2026). Their paper will be collected at the gate and their hand stamped to gain free entry into the rodeo. Each form is good for one child admission to the Thursday night rodeo. Only one entry per child. SMALL ANIMAL BARN RULES & SCHEDULE The Small Animal Barn continues to make improvements each year. Larger birds, such as geese and turkeys, will have permanent pens this year, and fancy pigeon breeds will have access to cage liners to protect their feathered feet. We will have plenty of room for exhibitors to showcase their furry and feathered friends. Please review the exhibitor guidelines below. OPEN CLASS EXHIBIT BUILDING DISPLAYS WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26 - SATURDAY, AUGUST 29 Many examples of artistic creations by Sanpete County residents will be on display in the Fair Exhibit Building beginning Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 3 p.m. as part of the Sanpete County Fair’s Open Class exhibits. Visitors are invited to view and enjoy the exhibits throughout the fair. Those wishing to enter an exhibit may do so on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 1 to 4 p.m. Exhibits can range from fine arts (oil, watercolor, chalk, pencil art) to string art, Lego creations, wood carving and burning, woodworking, leather work, crochet, sewing, cross stitch, porcelain dolls, ceramics, quilting, furniture finishing, fresh flowers and potted plants, fresh fruits and vegetables from personal gardens, bottled goods and more. All visitors to the Exhibit Building are encouraged to pick up a voting ballot at the front desk, choose their favorite exhibits and then turn in the completed ballot to help select which entry receives the People’s Choice exhibit award. Exhibitors who would like to volunteer to help staff the Exhibit Building during the fair are encouraged to sign up for a two-hour shift. Volunteers can sign up by calling Brandi Reber or at exhibit check-in on Aug. 22.

ENTRY RULES

All Sanpete County residents are encouraged to exhibit items they have grown or created. When bringing an exhibit in for display, if there is no category for an entry, one will be made to accommodate the entry. All items must be clean, neat and in new condition. Dirty or dusty items may be removed by the committee and will not be displayed. Artwork may only be displayed at the fair once and may not be entered in multiple years. Displayed photographs are limited to two per person. Photographs and artwork must be mounted or framed in a way that they can be hung. Frames must have hardware on the back. Quilts will be displayed on hanging racks that will

show them beautifully and help keep the quilts clean from hands touching them. All quilts displayed must be either hand-stitched or machine-stitched. Crochet, knit and embroidery items will be displayed on tables or hung when appropriate. Produce and baked goods must be covered with plastic to discourage flies and to protect the items. FUN ON THE FARM Fun on the Farm is a permanent and free exhibit at the Sanpete County Fair that was created by Calan Olsen in response to a suggestion from his grandpa Steve Frischknecht. It is a hands-on agricultural exhibit that teaches how food gets from the farm to the table. Visitors start by putting on an apron and getting a basket at the first building. They then proceed through other buildings, with each building dedicated to a different farm animal. They also gather products (milk, honey, eggs, bacon, fruit or vegetables) as they go. There are different activities throughout the exhibit like milking a cow, holding a cockroach, branding a cow, carding wool, roping a steer, riding the tractors, etc. They take the products they gather in the buildings and turn them into the market and get a Fun on the Farm dollar. They get to spend their dollar at the store for a treat or prize. Fun on the Farm will be open on Aug. 28 (Friday) from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Aug. 29 (Saturday) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will close before the parade on Saturday and will not reopen, so plan your visit early. Kids in second grade and younger need to be accompanied by an adult to Fun on the Farm. It is located inside the fairgrounds behind the swimming pool. This year the theme for the fair is “Red, White, and MOO.” We are going to honor the wonderful cow at Fun on the Farm this year with some new activities. 1. The cow building finally got its siding last year and there will be black cow spots on the building in different shapes. There will be an “I Spy” paper available when you reach the white milk cow building that lists the shapes to find. 2. There will be a story time where volunteers will read the children funny stories about cows. The story time hours are Friday at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Join us at the shelter to the north of the Fun on the Farm store if you want to listen. 3. There will be a Fun on the Farm Kindness Rock Garden with painted rocks. To help our garden keep growing, you can add your beautiful rocks you have painted or you can trade it for one that is already in the garden. We would love to see some cows! 4. magazine. When your child does this challenge, they earn a ticket to the Thursday night Sanpete County Fair Rodeo. This is for kindergarten through fifth-graders for the school year 2025-26. 5. There is a “Design a Cow” contest for all ages. Use your creative juices and fill the cow on the coloring page with colors and designs. Your creation will be posted in the Fun on the Farm buildings for everyone to see. You will earn a cow prize. The coloring page is available in this magazine and on the fair’s website, Facebook and Instagram. 6. There will be a Goosechase Challenge activity available for the first 50 teams that focuses on the Sanpete County Fair and Fun on the Farm. There will be a prize for the top two winners. See this magazine or the Sanpete County Fair website and Facebook page for more information. 7. There will be a mini cow in each building to try and find. If you find them all, you get to take one home with you when you get to the store. This project is run through donations. We have plaques that are displayed with our Bronze, Silver and Gold donors. DEMOLITION DERBY FRIDAY, AUGUST 28 7 P.M. Join in what will surely prove to be the most smashing event of the Sanpete County Fair on Friday, Aug. 28, in the arena at the county fairgrounds as the annual Demolition Derby gets underway. OPEN CLASS PET SHOW FRIDAY, AUGUST 28 • 2 P.M. The Sanpete County Fair’s 45th Annual Open Class Pet Show will be held at the fairgrounds pavilion at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28. Youth ages 18 and younger are encouraged to give their pet a bath or shower, dress it up and bring it to the pet show to strut their stuff. You may ask, “What is a pet?” Well, quite simply and concisely, a pet can be almost anything. Who is to say that a mouse, spider, sneaky snake or a starling can’t be a pet? The old saying “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” also applies to pets. No pre-registration is required to participate, but those wanting to participate should arrive by 1:45 p.m. that day to complete their registration. Entry categories are as follows: Small Dog, Large Dog, Cat, Rabbit, Reptile, Bird and Fowl, Costume, Large Pet, Most Unique and Open. There is no fee to enter and each entrant will receive a ribbon. There will be a first-place winner in each category and each first-place winner will receive a trophy.

CAR SHOW SATURDAY, AUGUST 29 10 A.M. TO 3 P.M. The Car Show at the Sanpete County Fair, scheduled for Aug. 29, will be held on the south side of the fairgrounds near the pavilion. Registration and set up will be conducted from 8 to 10 a.m. The Car Show will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m. This year’s show will be open to cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, UTV’s, ATV’s and special interest vehicles. All years, makes and models are welcome. Registration for each entry includes a T-shirt and a dash plaque. Additional T-shirts can be ordered early for $15 or purchased at the show for $18. Hats will also be available for $20 if purchased early or at the Car Show. Early registration (by Aug. 13) will be $20 for the first entry and $15 for additional entries registered in the same name. Entries registered on Aug. 14 and later will

be $25 for the first entry and $20 for each additional entry in the same name. RODEO ANNOUNCER MONROE MAGNUSON

Monroe Magnuson answered a call in 2008 from a longtime cattle producer and friend expecting to talk about show cattle and the cattle business, but the result of the phone call was far different than he had ever expected. After the regular cowboy banter and ribbings between the two, the caller said, “Monroe, my wife and I have decided you need a career change.” “I didn’t really know how to react when he said that, so I just asked what he meant,” Monroe said. “My friend explained that they were hunting for a rodeo announcer for the Panguitch Invitational High School Rodeo, and they had thought I should try my hand at announcing. I am always up for a challenge, so I said okay.” The first performance was “baptism by fire,” Monroe said. “There were several injuries, and I had no idea how to handle them or explain to the crowd what was going on.” But the rush was more than Monroe could predict, and he was hooked. For three years, he became the voice of the “Invitational” and began booking rodeos anywhere he could convince contractors and committees to hire him. Monroe’s father died of injuries incurred from a horse accident on the family’s ranch when Monroe was 5. “Because my dad and mom were in the process of building their cattle operation at the time of my father’s accident and death,” Monroe said, “I spent my youth working with my mother and brother doing what needed to be done to make the cattle operation work. I never really had the opportunity to do things like rodeo, although it was something I think I would have wanted to do when I was younger.” While Monroe operates a cattle operation of his own and grew up in a ranching family, rodeo was not anything in which he had ever participated. “I did the regular chores and duties that every other cattleman does every day caring for his livestock, and I had also had the opportunity to show and sell cattle all over the nation. I loved to watch rodeo, but, through all of that, it never occurred to me to be involved in rodeo,” Monroe said. “But after having the opportunity to announce, I became aware that it was a life I would have loved when I was younger,

a community that I truly enjoy, and a great opportunity to educate about and tell the story of a way of life, the cowboy way of life, that I love and believe in.” “I believe the American cowboy is respected and maybe even idolized,” Monroe said. “They say everybody loves a cowboy, and, if that is so, it is because of what he represents … integrity, grit and determination.” In 2010, Monroe attended a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Announcers Training Seminar with renowned instructor and announcer Chad Nicholson at Fort Worth, Texas, and has since been hired to announce rodeos throughout the western United States. He holds cards with the PRCA and Professional Bull Riders (PBR) as well as the Rocky Mountain Pro Rodeo Association. In 2011 he was honored to be selected as one of three announcers for the National Finals Rodeo of the National Little Britches Association at Pueblo, Colorado, and in 2012 he was selected to serve as the lead announcer at the NLBRA National Finals. He had the opportunity to announce the finals of the Western States Bucking Bull Association in 2014 and has been announcer of the year in 2012, 2015 and 2019 of the Rocky Mountain Pro Rodeo Association (RMPRA). Monroe and his wife Amber make their home in Castle Dale, Utah, where he has his cattle operation.

BROKEN HEART RODEO COMPANY It all started more than 30 years ago when Broken Heart Rodeo Company put on its first Bull Wars in Morgan, Utah. With little knowledge or experience but with high hopes, a very successful rodeo career began. Ben and Jennifer German, owners of Broken Heart, are the proud parents of three children, as well as sons in-law and grandchildren, who work the rodeos. Nevada State High School Finals and has been the stock contractor at the Utah State High School Finals. Broken Heart takes great pride in its livestock and always continues to purchase new animals to improve the company’s string. German has a “Born to Buck” program that allows him to raise genetically superior bucking horses. In the spring of 2008, Broken Heart Rodeo teamed up with Circle J Rodeo to start the new Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association. 2026 JR. LIVESTOCK SHOW & SALE AUGUST 27-29 The Sanpete County Junior Livestock Show and Sale will be held Aug. 27 through 29 as part of the 2026 Sanpete County Fair. The Junior Livestock Show and Sale is a great agricultural education program for youth ages 8-18 and has been conducted annually at the Sanpete County Fair since the mid1980s. Youth registered with 4-H or FFA participate by purchasing a calf, a pig, a lamb or a goat, which are then fed, groomed and exercised for at least 60 to 100 days. The youth also study animal science and how to train, groom and show the animals. Youth are also able to raise and show dairy goats in a quality show. All of the hard work and study is challenged at the Sanpete County Junior Livestock Show where youth are tested on their knowledge of their project species and also exhibit and present their livestock project animals to a judge in the show ring. The exhibitors will show their animals in the market classes on Thursday, Aug. 27. In these classes, the judge will evaluate the animals on confirmation and finishing. Classes are divided by the weight of the animal. The Grand and Reserve animals in each species will be chosen on this day.

On Friday, Aug. 28, the exhibitors will show their animals once more, but during these classes the exhibitors will be judged on their skills and abilities to groom and show their animals. These are called the showmanship classes, and exhibitors compete against others their own age. The final event will be the Livestock Auction and Sale at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, where members of the community and local businesses can purchase or contribute a donation to purchase a livestock project animal. The livestock are then processed at local meat processing facilities for a good supply of high-quality meat for the buyer. There are many volunteers who work hard to provide this great learning experience to the 4-H and FFA youth. Please come and support this great youth education experience. HORSE PULLING COMPETITION AUGUST 29 • 1 P.M. Don’t miss the opportunity to see real horsepower in person and witness how farming was done prior to the use of modern day tractors at the Utah Horse Pullers Association event during the Sanpete County Fair. The event will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, in the fairgrounds arena. Since tractors and equipment have taken over the farming industry, pulling matches have become a sporting event. Seeing matched pairs of horses and the harness gear used is a sight to behold. The event is free, so just find a good seat in the grandstand, settle in and enjoy. Since there is no cover on the grandstand, spectators are encouraged to bring large umbrellas or a pop-up canopy to keep off the afternoon sun. There are three weight classes in the competition: lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight. Prize money is paid to the winners of each weight class. The event has been a crowd-pleasing event in

past years and is a worthwhile event to experience. Association members are personable and will entertain questions about the horses, their training and their gear. Horse owners try to make it an educational as well as an entertaining experience. Come out, enjoy and be amazed at the pulling power of these grand horses. PIE-EATING CONTEST SATURDAY, AUG. 29 2 P.M. Prepare now for the annual pie-eating contest to be held Saturday, Aug. 29, at 2 p.m. in the fair pavilion. How fast can a cream pie be eaten with a person’s hands behind their back, with no utensils and their face in the pie? You’ll be able to answer this question at the Pie-Eating Contest! Contestants may choose from three flavors: chocolate, banana or coconut. There are also three divisions: ages 10 and under, 11 to 15, and 16 and older. Trophies will be awarded to the first-place winners in each division. Contestants need to pre-register with their name, age and flavor of pie. Pre-registration will begin Aug. 11 and continue through Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. To pre-register, call 435-851-0980. ASSIST THOSE IN NEED Help feed your neighbors by donating to the SanPete Pantry, a food pantry dedicated to helping those who are struggling financially in Sanpete County. The organization’s mission is to provide an opportunity for those in need to obtain food and other resources and at no cost to them while involving the community in a way that inspires them to serve their neighbors with empathy, respect and compassion. Sanpete Pantry is located at 1080 Blackhawk Blvd. in Mt. Pleasant. Those needing its assistance can visit the pantry on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 1 and 3:30 p.m. The pantry also performs Mobile Food Drops in various locations throughout the county. The schedule for Mobile Food Drops can be viewed on the pantry’s Facebook page. Financial donations to support the pantry can be made on the Sanpete Pantry’s website (scan the QR code).
