The goal of the program is for children to maintain their reading level so that they’re prepared to com-

nce Reta Tischner retired after 21 years of working as a school teacher at Salem Elementary, she wanted to dedicate her efforts in making the Salem City Library grow. “I’m very committed to kids and books. When I retired, I said I needed to be involved and I needed to be involved with the library,” said Tischner, who’s lived in Salem since 1994. For the last three years, Tischner has helped with the annual Salem Days’ library auction. She said her passion for books began when her mother constantly took her to the library as a child. According to Bryce Williams, a library assistant at Salem City Library, the auction serves as a fundraiser to raise money to help with the library’s operations and fund programs throughout the year. Last year, the auction raised $15,000. This year, Tischner wants to exceed that number. The auction features themed gift baskets, gift cards and quilts donated by locals or businesses for people to bid on. “We had generous people that bought a lot of items, and

mence classes in the fall. The children are asked to read and to maintain a reading chart, which can be redeemed for a prize. “In my mind, the library is the center of the community. It’s smack dab in the middle of Salem,” Tischner said. Tischner said her dream is to double the size of the library and calls Salem residents “generous” when it comes to raising money for a cause that serves children. “We need a bigger library,” Tischner said. “The problem is that there is no more room. They have to get rid of an old book to get a new book.” According to the Salem City Library website, the library houses more than 19,000 books, with 58,000 items check outed annually. Tischner said people are anxious for the library to be bigger and better, but she doesn’t worry that it won’t happen sooner than later. “When I die, I have told my family, I want people to donate to the Salem library for me. That’s how much I love the library,” she said. The library auction is scheduled for the last day of Salem Days on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at the pageant stage in Knoll Park. Williams said the auction will feature items appropriate for all ages.

atch out Utah County, sharks are coming your way. From Aug. 15 to 18, the Utah County Fair takes over at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds, bringing with it these aquatic animals and plenty of other things to see and experience. Events will kick off on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 4:30 p.m. with the opening ceremonies, featuring the county commissioners as special guests. “We invite everyone to come and join us when we open the fair,” said Susan Duncan, the assistant administrator of the fair. Some of the main attractions this year include a bullfighting event and a monster truck event, both with tickets available at a 30 percent discount by using code “monster30” when purchased online. There will be a concert featuring the group “Danny and the Moonlight Serenaders,” as well as the classic rodeo, which is free and open to all and will feature a secret intermission show.

In addition to the staple events, the fair also will include activities for all ages, such as a hot dog eating contest, a large LEGO display, a STEM trailer with a robotics competition and hands-on taxidermy displays.

“We’ve got a live shark tank exhibit, our traditional snails and tails, snakes and those wonderful things,” Duncan said. “We’re having a competition between the cities in Utah county about who can decorate the best pig to advertise the fair,” Kenton added. “They’ll be on display at the fair,” Duncan said. “People can get a good look at them.” This year also includes a dunk tank

fundraiser for charity. Proceeds will go to the Dan Peterson school, sponsored by Larry Miller Mercedes out of Draper. “I don’t think there’s one thing that we’re not excited about,” Duncan said. “It’s meant to be a community event, it’s meant to bring families together. We’re just excited about the fair.” “This year we’ll have the opportunity to reach more people and have people feel the community, the unity,” Kenton said. “I think it gives the opportunity to unite the community as one, like it used to be. Traditional fairs used to unite the community, that’s what we’re wanting to do again.” “We love it when the volunteers come together, from extension, to vendors, to taxidermy, to the STEM trailer,” Duncan said. “It takes such an amount of people to put together such a wonderful event and we couldn’t do it without our wonderful volunteers. Payson Onion Days promises layers of fun MIRANDA HUBERT

ayson’s Onion Days strives to stick to its roots. This traditional view brings back a simpler time every year during the turning of the season, as summer draws to a close and fall begins. Taking place from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3, this festival’s throwback features include a football game, fireworks, a soap box derby and much more. The weekend’s events kick off on Aug. 30 with a concert sponsored by the Mountain View Hospital in the Peteetneet Amphitheater. This year will feature the group “The Frontmen of Country.” “It’s wonderful,” said Karl Teemant, the recreation director of Payson. “We have several thousand people show up. It’s a wonderful family event to kick off the celebration.” Another staple event is the community play, which is presenting “Mary Poppins.” “They do a great job every year, they’re just wonderful. You can pick your day that you want to go,” Teemant said.

Friday night will see some town spirit as the Payson High School football team faces off against Emery High School, with a fireworks show to follow the game. On Labor Day itself, the 5K and 10K races take place. “It’s a family-oriented race,” Teemant said. “We have families that come back every year for family reunions that might have 30 people running from the same family.” More family fun is found at the children’s carnival, which features a petting zoo, many different carnival activities that are free for children, and a slip ‘n slide. Incorporating the namesake of the city’s summer event, Onion Days also has a biggest onion contest. “People get to grow onions and bring them in and they’re judged,” explained Teemant. “There [are] some prizes, it keeps the heritage of Onion Days alive.” Finishing out the week on Monday is the Grand Parade, an event which is the fruition of many months of planning.

The races had three different weight classes with a first, second and third place winner for each, and an overall best in show to the most creative derby car. Per Payson Onion Days tradition, the parade’s Grand Marshal is kept secret in the months leading up to the festival and revealed at the Salmon Dinner that occurs the first Friday in August. In order to be one of the first to learn the identity of the person who will be honored this year, tickets are now available on the city website for the big night on Aug. 3.

“We just want the people of Payson to unite and come together and enjoy the festivities, celebrating the heritage of our city,” Teemant said. “It’s a good way to remember your roots.” For more information on this year’s events, visit the Onion Days website at http://paysonutah.org/events/golden-onion-days.
