United We Grow - Sanpete County Fair 2017 This year, the fair theme was chosen as a celebration of Sanpete County’s agricultural producers. Sanpete County is rich in agricultural heritage from the north to the south. Since its settlement, Sanpete County’s economy has been agriculturally based. In its first few decades, it served as Utah’s granary. In 1923, the Utah Poultry Producers Cooperative Association was established in Sanpete where eggs were processed and stored, feed was stored and farm equipment was stored and sold. In 1961, the name was changed to Intermountain Farmers Association (IFA) to reflect the changing nature of the business. Cattle have always been important here, with cattlemen scattered throughout the county’s borders. Dairy cattle also contribute to the local economy. Not as many dairies exist in Sanpete County as there once were, but a few large dairies have survived. Sheep dominated the local economy from the 1880s through the 1920s, and Sanpete played a prominent part in world markets for a time. Still today, Sanpete ranks number one in the state of Utah for sheep production with more than 57,000 sheep and lambs.

Turkeys, grown casually as a farmyard fowl, became a cooperative, integrated industry in response to the 1930s depression. Today, they rule the roost in Sanpete, which ranks among the top 10 turkey-producing counties in the country. (Utah Division of State History) This year, we celebrate the Sanpete County farmers and ranchers. We also recognize all of the local businesses and individuals that support them. It takes a lot of people to keep rural operations going. We salute the repairman, parts dealers, feed stores, banks and businessmen that strive to keep the farmers and ranchers in business. From turkeys, dairies and forage crops to pumpkins, sheep and cattle, this county grows it all. As a fair board, the call is made to all Sanpete County residents to unite together and show appreciation for all of the agricultural producers in this great county of Sanpete. The Sanpete County Commissioners and the fair board are excited to welcome everyone to the 2017 Sanpete County Fair with the theme “United We Grow.” Please be patient with the construction, it will be in full swing after the fair. Sanpete County enjoys a rich family and agriculture history. We raise world-class families, livestock and crops. But we can’t do it alone. We don’t raise our kids alone - it takes a united effort from great teachers, mentors, nurses, doctors, coaches and friends. Our family and friends extend from the northern county line to the southern county line. We are forever grateful to the wonderful people of Sanpete County for the influence and impact they have made on our families. When we invest time and effort in each other, we all benefit and become more united. As we stay united, we grow stronger, and we gain the strength to meet the 8
challenges of a growing population base in a limited space with limited water and other resources. The Sanpete County Fair is the culmination of a herculean effort from the fair board, the end of a great summer, the beginning of school and a place to gain new friends, renew old friendships and lift each other. We invite you to come to the Sanpete County Fair on the north end of Manti. Get involved in the Demolition Derby, rodeo, Fun on the Farm, Livestock Show and carnival and, of course, enjoy all the great food. Most of all, come and enjoy the fair. Ronald and Kaye Bradley named parade grand marshals Ronald and Kaye Bradley of Moroni have been chosen to lead the Sanpete County Fair Parade as the parade’s grand marshals. The parade will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26. The Bradleys have lived in Sanpete County for many years and are happy to tell others of this special place. Ronald Bradley’s great-great-grandfather, George Washington Bradley, was sent by President Brigham Young in 1859 to help start a new settlement, which became Moroni. The Bradleys say it’s been a wonderful place to raise their nine children: Daniel, Deloris, Joseph, Mark, Danielle, Marilee, John, David and Stephen. Their children all graduated from North Sanpete High School and Snow College. Four grandchildren have attended Snow College and three have graduated from there. Ronald Bradley was born in Moroni, the son of Clifford and Rhea Bradley. He learned in his youth to work hard and be responsible for and love animals as he worked on a farm and helped his dad with custodial work at the schools. Ronald’s sons learned these same principles as they helped him farm and raise Suffolk sheep, Simmental cattle and turkeys on their farm in Sanpete. Ronald and Kaye Bradley of Moroni will serve as grand marshals Ronald served in the Northwestern States LDS Misfor the 2017 Sanpete County Fair Parade to be held at 5 p.m. on sion. He graduated from Snow College and Utah State Saturday, Aug. 26. University and received a master’s of education degree from the University of Phoenix. He taught in the LDS He has served as a bishop, stake president and patriChurch Education System for 37 years, teaching in Lehi, arch in the Moroni Stake as well as a Manti LDS Temple Salt Lake City, Emery County, Moroni, Mt. Pleasant and ordinance worker, assistant recorder and sealer. He and Ephraim. He was also an area director in Bremerton, his wife served LDS missions to Jacksonville, Florida; Wash., for four years. Utica, New York; Lubbock, Texas; and St. George, Utah. Kay Bradley was born in Richfield to Max and Utahna Marquardson. She graduated from Richfield High School and Brigham Young University. She served in the Western States LDS Mission. She met Ronald in Salt Lake City where they were both teaching, and they were married Dec. 16, 1965, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Lee Sorensen named 2017 Sanpete County King Cowboy Lee Sorensen is not only a third-generation Sanpete County cattleman, he is also a third-generation Sanpete County King Cowboy. His grandfather, Nels Sorensen, was selected as King Cowboy in 1951. Lee’s dad, Neil Sorensen, was King Cowboy in 1982, and now Lee has been selected as the 2017 King Cowboy. When looking at Lee Sorensen’s photo, note that Lee is wearing the same black shirt that his grandfather, Nels, wore as King Lee Sorensen, 2017 King Cowboy Cowboy in 1951. For more than 50 years, Lee has worked to raise quality cattle on his ranch located east of Mayfield at the mouth of 12 Mile Canyon. He also raises quarter horses that he races throughout the Intermountain Area. Lee performs active service in his church and community and is a member of the Lions Club. He has served in both the Sanpete County Cattleman’s Association and Sanpete County Farm Bureau. He has also served in the State of Utah Farm Bureau Federation and the Utah Food Policy Council. Lee works with the fair board organizing poets and western singers for their annual gathering. Lee is an artist and paints pictures of horses, cows and cowboys and also writes and performs cowboy poetry. As 2017 Sanpete County King Cowboy, he will lead the Mammoth Parade on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 5 p.m. Here is one of his poems: Grandpa, Dad and Me By Lee Sorensen I was raised on a family farm, which I can’t complain. I got to do what others couldn’t and the memories remain. You see I got to work with my dad and grandpa by their side every day. I learned the value of hard work with little time to play. We milked the cows, fed the calves and watched the livestock grow. We planted the field, watered the crops and reaped the harvest we sowed. I learned from the best, their example was there for everyone to see. We worked hard and we had a purpose, my Grandpa, Dad and Me. I feel blessed to have been raised this way but, I have only one regret. My boys will never get to work with dad, as times have changed a bit. The family farm is gone now, and they have taken jobs in town. They will never know the joy and fulfillment that comes from way deep down. From knowing that you created something with hard work and the sweat of your brow, While riding horses, chopping hay and milking the old cow. We praised the Lord for what we have as we get down on one knee To give thanks to God for all he does. My Grandpa, Dad and Me.

Now grandpa’s gone and dad is old and I’m well past my prime. I’m starting to look a lot like Dad; I guess that’s not a crime. I have a double chin; my hair is thinning and turning gray. I need glasses to read and aids to hear what other people say. I guess it’s a family characteristic; it’s the way it’s supposed to be. We look and talk and think alike, my Grandpa, Dad and Me. I know I had something special that no one else can claim. I got to work side by side with men who were the same. Who taught me how to live, to serve both God and my fellowmen. To treat people and animals with respect and always do the best I can. Life goes on, yes life is good. Life is all I hoped it would be. There was joy and there was love for Grandpa, Dad and Me. On Aug. 4 a new queen and royalty will be chosen to replace the outgoing Miss Sanpete County 2016 – 17 Royalty which are (left to right): Bailey Simmons, third attendant, Manti; Amelia Nell, first attendant, Ephraim; Kaytie Nielson, Miss Sanpete County, Fairview; Lundyn Wood, second attendant, Ephraim; and Madelynn Hill, fourth attendant, Gunnison.
Miss Sanpete County to be selected Aug. 4 On Aug. 4, one of the young women competing for the opportunity to be the new Miss Sanpete County 2017 will be chosen along with her royalty. The pageant will be held at 7 p.m., at Manti High School, 100 West 500 North. Tickets will be available at the door, which will open at 6 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults; Kids ages 4-11 are $4 each. Adult tickets will receive a program, additional programs are $1 each. The selection committee is so pleased to have all cities within the county represented by these fine young women as they showcase their talents, desire to be of service and work towards challenging themselves and others to grow. The contestants will compete in: Interview (10 minutes) 25 percent of score; Talent (1 minute 30 seconds or 90 seconds) 35 percent of score; Evening Wear 20 percent of score; On-stage Question 5 percent of score; and Lifestyle and Fitness on stage 15 percent of overall score. Miss Sanpete County is an affiliated Miss America scholarship pageant and the new Miss Sanpete will compete for the title of Miss Utah in June of 2018. She will also receive a $2,000 scholarship written to the school of her choice at the end of her reign, along with a $1,000 wardrobe allowance to help her prepare to compete at the state level. Miss Sanpete County attendants will also receive smaller scholarships as follows: First attendant $500; Second attendant $400; Third attendant $300; and Fourth attendant $200. The new 2017 Miss Sanpete County and her royalty will be seen representing the county all year long, kicking 14
things off at the 2017 Sanpete County Fair and then at other events such as parades, celebrations and in other ways of service in the community. The committee members were so pleased to work with the outgoing queen, Kaytie Nielson, and her royalty. Kaytie Nielson is the daughter of Mike and Debbie Nielson, Fairview. As 2016 Miss Sanpete County, Kaytie has poured much passion into her responsibilities and by implementing her platform of service centered on kindness and random acts of service, which includes ways to build up kindness and its actions in our lives and the lives of others. The 2016 Miss Sanpete County attendants include First attendant Amelia Nell, Ephraim, daughter of Alan and Kathy Nell; Second attendant Londyn Woods Miller, Ephraim, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Woods, and wife of Max Miller; Third attendant Bailey Simons, Manti, daughter of David and Allison Simons; and Fourth attendant Madelyn Hill, Gunnison, daughter of Ben and Megan Hill. Past year rewarding for Miss Sanpete County 2016 Miss Sanpete County 2016 Kaytie Nielson shared her feelings about the past year: “My year as Miss Sanpete County has been nothing short of amazing. I have grown so much as a person from this year of service and have truly become the best version of myself. I have ventured way out of my comfort zone and pushed my limits to places I never thought I would go. “Standing on the stage Aug. 5, 2016, as the crown was placed on my head, I was in shock. I was thrilled, but in shock. The next year of my life changed in an instant. I have always had a taste for adventure but I never thought that mine would lead me to representing our beautiful county at the Utah state pageant. “It was more than what I thought I was capable of. Miss Utah was one of the most rewarding weeks I have ever had. I made so many great relationships with girls from all over the state. It was the experience of a lifetime. “As Miss Sanpete County, I was able to gain friendships with my attendants and so many other people in the county. The county fair was such a great way to start off my reign. The interactions and the people I met have changed Sanpete for me. In August of 2016, the Miss Sanpete County Outstanding Teen Royalty was chosen. The three young ladies that have been serving are, from left: Mashaylie Burnside, second attendant, daughter of Preston and Natalie Burnside of Mt. Pleasant; Libby Simons, queen, daughter of David and Allison Simons of Manti; and McKenna Taylor, first attendant, daughter of Jeremy and Marlo Taylor of Gunnison.
Libby Simons served as 2016-17 Miss Sanpete County Outstanding Teen Libby Simons, who was crowned Miss Sanpete County Outstanding Teen for 2016-17 in July of 2016, said the past year has provided great opportunities for her to serve along with Miss Sanpete County and her older sister, Miss Heart of Utah. “I was able to go and play my favorite piano piece at multiple places throughout the year, which includes the Miss Sanpete County Pageant, Miss Heart of Utah Pageant, Coal Days in Salina, and Miss Moroni,” Simons said. “Being able to be part of the county fair was a blast! We were involved with the animal barn, helping with the rodeo and demolition derby, participating in the Chalk Throw, Fun on the Farm and much more!” She continued, “It was sweet being involved with the derby because we got to ride in the back of a side-by-side and throw T-shirts, popcorn and candy to the crowd. I also was able to be a part of the parades, which are always so fun when the community is cheering.” In February, she was able to volunteer at the Dress Exchange and help girls find a dress that was affordable and beautiful to them. In March, she attended the Miss America Serves Day, where those who are associated with the Miss America Organization go and serve. The event raises money for Primary Children’s Hospital, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. “It was fun while doing it!” she said. “During those hours of service, the group made a total of 2,610 projects, which included 199 medical dolls, 200 monster puppets, 600 pair of silly glasses, 82 file folder games, 167 necklace kits, 164 crown kits, 350 paper dolls, 100 necklaces, 666 flowers and 82 blankets!” All of these items Sanpete County Fair
went to Primary Children’s Hospital. “My platform was S.M.I.L.E., which stands for shine, motivate, inspire, lead, excel. I have implemented my platform by being a good example to my classmates, dance team and the community,” Simons said. “I served as the eighth-grade president in my school and as the dance team’s captain. It gave me the opportunity to serve and put myself out there in many situations to be a leader and encourage others daily.” Coming up on Sept. 29 and 30, Simons will be participating in the Miss Utah’s Outstanding Teen State Competition. This means she’s been learning a new piano piece, “Fluttering Leaves in A Minor,” and working more on modeling, fitness and interviewing. “I would like to thank the fair board for supporting me this past year, Emily Cox, Rachel Hermansen and Anne Fonville for always being there, for being great directors, providing support and guidance,” Simons said. “I appreciate attendants Mckenna Taylor, Gunnison, and Mashaylie Burnside, Mt. Pleasant, for all the parades and fair fun activities, and Nan Purcell for teaching me piano and being so patient with me and pushing me to be my best. “Thank you Brittany Dyches and Kiersten Wheeler for being a great example and helping me reach my potential, also to my family for always being there for me. A special thanks to my mom for helping me finding dresses and to Dad for cheering me on, to my sister Abbey for doing my hair and makeup, to Bailey for the role model you are to me, and to Colby for cheering me up. “Thank you, Sanpete County, for all the love and support you have given me,” she said. 17
Outstanding Teen program helps girls develop talents outstanding teen. The royalty is also a large part of the county fair events and will be seen in parades and other service capacities and celebrations throughout the county. Libby Simons, the outgoing queen for 2016-17, has done a tremendous job representing the county, working hard and serving in the community. Her platform of S.M.I.L.E (Shine, Motivate, Inspire, Lead, Excel) has been used to inspire leadership especially in schools locally and outside of the county. She has also helped while serving the elderly, working with community cleanup projects and so much more. Libby is the daughter of David and Allison Simons of Manti. Her first attendant for the past year was McKenna Taylor of Gunnison, the daughter of Jeremy and Marlo Taylor. Second attendant was Mashaylie Burnside of Mt. Miss Sanpete County’s Outstanding Teen program is the little sister to the Miss Sanpete County scholarship program. It has grown over the years and is an opportunity for girls ages 13 to 16 to showcase themselves and learn new ways to speak, develop talents and grow. The teen program is an extension of the Miss America program and at the state and national levels it leads to scholarships and more awesome ways to serve in the community, especially locally. Grandstand demolition won’t hold back 2017 county fair With the unexpected demolition of the old grandstand due to safety concerns, the 2017 Sanpete County Fair may be a little different this year, but the fair board has been able to acquire some temporary seating that will ensure that “the fair will go on as planned.” The theme for this year’s fair is “United We Grow,” which exemplifies the desire to unify the county. Next year, the new grandstand will be in place and will have a seating capacity of 11,000 - a great improvement over the old grandstand. The fairgrounds will have a whole new look next year, and all are looking forward to it! This year, fair activities will begin on Friday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m., when the Miss Sanpete County Scholarship Pageant takes place at Manti High School. The deadline to pre-register for the Open Horse Show is 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 11. On Thursday, Aug. 17, contestants who wish to participate in the rodeo may call the RMPRA office at 719-486-0599 between 1 and 7 p.m. to register or they can register online at www.rmpraonline.com. At 4 p.m. that day, the 4-H Horse Show registration will take place with the horse show test at 4:30 p.m. and the actual horse show beginning at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, the junior rodeo will take place, so head on over to the arena and watch these up-and-coming cowboys strut their stuff. To register, call Zane Osborne at 801-376-6973. The Sanpete County Open Horse Show will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 19, with the books closing at 9:30 a.m. From 1 to 5 p.m., the Open Class and 4-H entries will be accepted the Exhibit Building. Signups for everyone’s favorite event, the Dutch Oven Cook-Off, will begin at 2 p.m., and the competition to decide who’s the best black pot chef will begin at 5 p.m. at the pavilion. At 7 p.m. that evening, stick around to watch the Fireman’s Challenge overseen by the newly organized Junior Fair Board. On Sunday, Aug. 20, hometown Hide Race entries in the rodeo will be accepted from 6 to 9 p.m. by calling Dell Jensen at 435-469-0296. On Monday, Aug. 21, from 3 to 6 p.m., Open Class baked goods and vegetables will be accepted at the Exhibit Building. No garden entries will be accepted at that time. At 5 p.m., the 4-H livestock barn set up and test will take place. At 7 p.m., the annual Cowboy Poetry event featuring Andy Nelson and country musician Brenn Hill will be presented at Manti High School. Tickets are $10 per person. On Tuesday, Aug. 22, from 8 to 9 a.m., 4-H gardening and baked goods will be accepted at the Exhibit Building. Sanpete County Fair
The building will then close for judging. From 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23, Open Class florals will be accepted at the Exhibit Building, which will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. Then, from 5 to 7 p.m., weighin and receiving for lamb, swine and market beef will take place. At 7 p.m., the Pee-Wee ATV Barrel Racing event will take over the arena and livestock judging will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, will be a big day for the fair when it starts off with the hogs market classes at 8 a.m. and sheep market classes at 10:30 a.m. The Exhibit Building will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. At noon, small animal entries will be accepted; at 12:30 p.m., goat market classes; and at 3 p.m., beef market classes. At 4 p.m., the midway will come alive when the Brown’s Amusements carnival opens along with Fun on the Farm. Local talent will perform from 3 to 6 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., the open heifer market class will take place followed at 6 p.m. with Mutton Bustin’ in the arena. The Rodeo Grand Entry will occur at 6:45 p.m. and the Rocky Mountain Pro Rodeo Association Broken Heart Rodeo Company at 7 p.m. On Friday, Aug. 25, the morning will start off at 8 a.m. with the antique tractor show that will continue until 6 p.m. Also at 8 a.m., the small animal barn will open along with the hog showmanship classes. At 10 a.m., the dairy cattle and dairy goat shows will take place followed by the dairy showmanship classes. Next up is the rabbit, poultry and pigeon judging that is open to the public. The Exhibit Building will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. At 11:30 a.m., sheep showmanship classes will begin, and at 2 p.m. the open class pet show will take place at the pavilion along with the goat showmanship classes. At 3 p.m., Brown’s Amusements will open. At 3:30 p.m. will be beef showmanship, and from 4 to 6 p.m., local talent will entertain the crowds at the pavilion. Fun on the Farm and Science Alliance will continue until 7 p.m. At 7 p.m., the big event - the Demolition Derby that everyone looks forward to - will begin with lots of noise, smoke and excitement. The last day of the fair, Aug. 26, will be full of activities beginning with the Livestock Buyers Breakfast at 8 a.m. The small animal barn will open and antique tractor and farm equipment will still be there until 6 p.m. Signups for the annual car show will be held until 10 a.m. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the ever-popular Mud Volleyball event will take place at the mud pit. 2017 Sweetheart Royalty to preside over rodeo events Sanpete County Sweetheart Jessica Everitt Sixteen-year-old Jessica Everitt, daughter of Deric and Muria Everitt of Ephraim, is hard-working, determined, adventurous and a little bit sassy. Every little girl loves horses, but most grow out of that phase; Jessica on the other hand never did. She started seriously riding horses about four years ago and her love for the four-legged creatures has only grown. Her best friend is her horse, Blue. Jessica has been training Blue since she was saddle broke. She has really enjoyed training her horse and plans to continue with Blue’s future foal. Jessica will be a senior this year at Manti High School. Along with high school classes, she is taking Snow College courses as well. Upon graduation, she plans to attend obtain her associate’s degree at Snow College and further her education at the University of Utah to become a pharmacist. When not riding her horse, Jessica is playing music, competing in speech and debate or swimming, especially the ocean. She loves music as much as she loves horses. She will hold the office of vice president for the Manti High School Band. Last year, she decided to try something new and joined speech and debate. She took first 20
place at region with her oratory. Jessica was born in California and has lived on both sides of the country. She likes to travel and has been to 42 states. She plans to visit the 48 continental states by age 18 and all 50 in her lifetime. Jessica says she is very excited and grateful for the opportunity to represent this county be being the 2017 Sanpete County Sweetheart! First Attendant Amandah Malstrom Amandah Malstrom is a 16-year-old Sanpete native currently living in Manti. She has met and worked with many amazing people throughout the county in her various interests and activities, which include serving as second attendant in the 2014 Sanpete County Sweetheart Royalty, as the 2016 Fairview Pioneer Days rodeo queen and in horse 4-H. She is a genuine animal-loving gal. Although her passion is horses, she also loves her ducks, turkeys, chickens, bunnies, goats and lambs. She spends countless hours taking care of them by feeding, watering and cleaning pens as well as midnight bottle feeding. She even delivers babies in the rain.

She also enjoys grand entry runs at local rodeos, shooting and hunting with her brothers, family barbecues and playing soccer. At the completion of the current 4-H and rodeo queening season, she will enter her junior year at Mission Academy and Manti High School. Along with her general education, she plans to pursue her specialty areas of agriculture and photography. She is geared toward her goal of becoming a licensed equine chiropractor and massage therapist.

She has three sisters, one brother and lots of animals. She enjoys riding motorcycles, being outdoors, spending time with her family and riding her horse, of course. She recently got her driver’s permit and loves to drive everywhere, so be on the lookout for her. But don’t worry; she can’t get her driver’s license until she can back the horse trailer by herself. Fair welcomes back Broken Heart Rodeo Company Sanpete County is welcoming Broken Heart Rodeo Company back to this year’s fair. The ever-popular Broken Heart Rodeo will fill the arena with roping, riding and wrangling adventures. The rodeo will take place on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 6:45 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 26, at 7:45 p.m. The Aug. 24 event is scheduled a bit earlier to allow youngsters to be able to be up and bright-eyed for school the next day. The Broken Heart Rodeo Company is owned and operated by the Ben and Jennifer German family out of West Point. They run 300 head of horses and 80 head of bulls and have provided animals for National Finals
Rodeo in Las Vegas and top rodeos throughout Utah. The company has received stock contractor of the year awards with both the Intermountain Profession Rodeo Association and the Rocky Mountain Pro Rodeo Association in past years. Team Sorting returns to fair Aug. 22 Watch practical ranching techniques during the annual Team Sorting event on Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m. Practical ranching experience comes to the rodeo arena as part of the Sanpete County Fair. While not a rodeo sport, Team Sorting demonstrates how ranchers sort cattle. Witness how cowboys can separate cattle in this free spectator event. In Team Sorting, competitors have 75 seconds to sort 10 head of cattle from one holding pen through a gate (or “hole”) into another holding pen. The trick is riders have to sort them in a specific order. Time starts when the announcer calls a number. Each of the cattle is labeled with a number from 0 to 9, and the competitors must pen the animal marked with the number called by the announcer. This continues in numerical order until all cattle are sorted. This year, two pens will compete at the same time. There are four classes in the competition. First to compete will be the Youth Class for riders ages 14 and younger. The Youth Class will be followed by the Open Class, which anybody can enter; the Mixed Class, where
one rider is male and the other female; and the Draw Pot Class, where a drawing is held to pair up riders. Locals are encouraged to sign up for this event. All riders are welcome and there are always riders looking for partners, therefore there is always someone to ride with in the competition. In each class, two riders make a team. In the youth class, the adult must be the one to watch the gate and coach the youth. Winners of each competition class will receive a cash award along with a trophy jacket valued at more than $100. Entry fees are $20 per rider in the open class and $10 per rider in all other classes. Sixty percent of entry money goes back to the payout. Riders can enter the competition as many times as they want as long as they change partners, so the same team doesn’t compete twice. Newly-formed junior fair board helping oversee fair events While attending the annual Utah Association of Fairs and Events convention, members of the Sanpete County Fair Board had the opportunity to attend a session on junior fair boards. Juab County has had a junior fair board in place for a few years now and has witnessed the success that has come through keeping younger generations involved in the fair. It is a great way of investing in the fair operations for many generations to come as the youth see first-hand what it takes to organize such an event. The youth are able to implement their own ideas at the fair as well. Early this spring, the fair board sent out junior fair board applications to each high school and asked that they distribute them within their schools. The board received seven applications and decided to accept all of them. The junior fair board meets regularly like the regular fair board and is overseen by the chairmen and co-chairs. This year, the junior board will oversee the Fireman’s Challenge as well as other events. Sanpete County Fair Board Chairman Mike Bennett said, “We look forward to working with a junior fair board and hope that it will grow and prosper every year.” 30
This year’s junior board members are Cassie Swapp, Fairview, chairman; Mason Cox, Mayfield, vice-chairman; Savannah Willden, Spring City; Kacey Cartright, Ephraim; Brayden Hodson, Manti; Michaela Bennett, Mayfield, and Laini Reber, Axtell. Kacey Cartright Kacey Cartright, 17, daughter of Travis and Stacie Cartright of Ephraim, loves Sanpete County. She attends Manti High School and is a cheerleader. She loves the outdoors including riding her horse. In 2016, she served in the Sanpete County Rodeo Royalty and absolutely loved it and is excited to get the chance to come back this summer as a member of the junior fair board. Savanna Willden Savanna Willden, the daughter of Justin and Amy Willden of Spring City, is a junior at North Sanpete High School. She is the acting president of FCCLA and loves being in the organization. Savanna has many hobbies, but her favorites are reading and singing. Her favorite part of the fair is watching the derby with her family.

JUNIOR, cont. from page 30 Laini Reber Laini Reber, the daughter of Matt and Brandi Reber, Axtell, is a junior at Gunnison Valley High School. She and her family moved to Axtell 12 years ago and she has been involved with the Sanpete County Fair ever since. She began exhibiting chickens in the Small Animal Barn and showing lambs in the Pee Wee Show. She is an active member of the 4-H program, serving in leadership positions on the county and state levels. She loves showing livestock at the fair and sharing her knowledge with others. She has learned many skills while doing 4-H projects for the Exhibit Building such as baking, quilting and embroidery. One of her favorite fair events is the Demolition Derby, and she loves to watch the rodeos. Last year, she even tried her hand at the Dutch Oven CookOff. Laini is a life guard at the Gunnison Swimming Pool and teaches swimming lessons. She is a member of the Gunnison Valley FFA Chapter and enjoys livestock judging and working with others. She is very excited to represent Sanpete County as a member of the junior fair board. Brayden Hodson Brayden Hodson, 16, is the son of Rodney and Jolynn Hodson, Manti. He likes to fish, hunt and ride his dirt bike. He is a junior at Manti High School and says he is excited to serve the county as a member of the Junior Sanpete County Fair Board.
Michaela Bennett Michaela Bennett, 16, is the daughter of Mike and Amanda Bennett, Mayfield. She is a junior at Gunnison Valley High School. She loves fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends and also loves spending time at the fair. Mason Cox Mason Cox, the son of Carl and Sandra Cox of Mayfield, will be a junior at Gunnison Valley High School this year. He is active in his school and his community. He was in the 10th-grade class presidency. He has a special talent for welding and has won competitions with his welding projects. He enjoys motorcycles, mountain biking, wake boarding, hunting, trapping and jeeping. Mason is a hard worker and enjoys working outside. He also holds the rank of Eagle Scout. Cassie Swapp Cassie Kay Swapp, 17, is the daughter of Josh and Cheryl Swapp, Fairview. She is a fun, outgoing girl who is starting her senior year at North Sanpete High School. She is the speech and debate president and enjoys spending her free time on the back of a horse or up on the mountain camping or boating. She was the 2016 Sanpete County Sweetheart and is currently serving as the junior fair board chair. She loves the involvement and the experience she is gaining from this opportunity. When Cassie graduates high school, she plans to travel to China with the ILP Program. Cassie’s advice to the youth is to get involved in their community.

Jr. Princess Royalty members named Junior Princess Alana Nielson Alana Nielson is 11 years old and will enter Ephraim Middle School this year. She is the daughter of Colby and Lynsey Zeeman of Sterling and James Nielson of Moroni. When she is not riding her horse, Dally, Alana is dancing at Dance Works Studio in Gunnison where she is on a competition dance team. Alana is having a difficult time choosing whether she should try out for the drill team or cheerleading squad when she gets into high school. She plans to become a teacher and would like to also own a dance studio. When she isn’t riding her horse or dancing, she enjoys spending time with her family in the outdoors, fishing at Flaming Gorge in Wyoming, four wheeling and hunting. Alana says she is honored to represent Sanpete County as this year’s Junior Princess and hopes to see everyone there! First Attendant Kenley Kelso Kenley Kelso, daughter of Kurt and Lindsay Kelso of Mt. Pleasant, was born a horse lover. She started riding horses as soon as she could sit up. When she was only 2 years old, she was involved in a pee wee horse riding program which included showmanship, western pleasure, 32
trail, barrels and poles. Kenley has been doing great in her first year of Horse 4-H. She has already been awarded trophies for horse skills and was named Miss Photogenic. She says her horse, Frosty, is the best on the planet and that horses are very loyal and take great care of their owners. Second Attendant Matti Wanner Matti Wanner, 12, is the daughter of Matt and Tiffanie Wanner of Axtell. She has one sister, four horses, two dogs and a very naughty potbelly pig. She attends Gunnison Middle School. Matti’s hobbies include dance, gymnastics, rodeo queening, hunting and roping with her dad. Matti is best described as a ball cap wearin’, animal lovin’, roller coaster ridin’, outdoorsy country girl that loves to laugh. The motto she lives by is, “Be the reason NOBODY sits alone at the lunch table.” Her favorite quote is, “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” Matti’s 10-year plan includes representing her favorite state as Miss Rodeo Utah, then continuing on to Miss Rodeo America so she can ride with the champions at the National Finals Rodeo. The Science Alliance exhibit was created by Steven Olsen and his dad, Darrel, five years ago to give fair attendees more things to do. The whole exhibit was created out of the Olsen family’s love for science and the chance to share that love with others through hands-on activities that teach various science principles. Located by Fun on the Farm, the exhibit is free of charge to attend and will be open on Friday, Aug. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be many fun activities to try. One of them is a giant maze that requires participants to work together A giant bubble maker will be part of the Science Alliance exhibit to get a ball successfully through the maze without the on Aug. 25 and 26 during the Sanpete County Fair. How big can ball falling into one of the holes. There is also a giant bubble maker, crazy mirrors and you make a bubble many other fun, hands-on activities and puzzles to entertain all ages. Talent show open to local performers Local groups or individuals who would like to share their talents are invited to be part of the Open Talent Show during the Sanpete County Fair. The show gives local up-and-coming artists and performers an opportunity to perform and entertain others during the fair. The talent show is held on the stage under the pavilion on the south side of the fairgrounds and is free of charge to enter and to view. Enjoy Sanpete’s best steak during Beef Feast The Sanpete Cattlemen’s Association welcomes everyone to the annual Beef Feast – a traditional steak fry featuring some of the best meat found in Sanpete County. Beef producers enjoy showcasing their products for friends and neighbors in Sanpete as well as for visitors to the area, making the Beef Feast a fair tradition for many families. The Beef Feast, scheduled for noon on Saturday, Aug. 26, in front of the Exhibit Building, will include 400 succulent New York strip steaks. Side dishes vary from year to year, and when the steaks are gone, the feast is over. The cost is $10. Lines begin forming early and are steady for a couple of hours, so come early and come hungry. If someone hasn’t had the opportunity of enjoying this event, they are invited stop by and find out why so many line up for lunch every year.

CornHole returns for second tournament The fun challenge of playing CornHole is returning for a second time to the Sanpete County Fair. Sponsored by the Central Utah CornHole Association, the tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26, in the old gym at Manti High School located on the west side of the fairgrounds. Participants need to sign up at 11 a.m. and the tournament will begin at noon with double elimination. There is a fee of $20 per team to play. Last year, there were participants ranging in age from 7 years old to over 70 years old. The 2016 winners were Buck Buford and Kerry Carver. CornHole is a game played with two to four people. It is played with two CornHole boards which are placed 33 feet apart measured from hole to hole. Opponents try to score points against each other by throwing corn-filled bags either onto the board (1 point), or into the hole in the board (3 points). The first team to reach 21 points wins. It can be lots of fun for the whole family. There will be a lot of cash and prizes to be won. Come join in the fun at the Sanpete County Fair. Creative displays to showcase area talents Come to the exhibit building to see and enjoy the many talents of the people of Sanpete County. Displayed photographs are limited to two per person. Quilt hanging display racks are now available for showing them beautifully and to help keep the quilts clean from hands touching them. All quilts displayed should be hand-stitched or machine-stitched; tied quilts are discouraged. Exhibits range from fine arts (oil, watercolor, chalk, pencil art) to string art, Legos, wood carving and burning, woodworking, leather work, crochet, sewing, cross stitch, porcelain dolls, ceramics, quilting, latch hook, furniture finishing, fresh flowers and potted plants, fresh fruits and vegetables from personal gardens, bottled goods and more. If there is no category for an entry, one will be made to accommodate an entry. Ribbons will be awarded for each entry. Along with the red, blue and sweepstakes ribbons, there will be two additional awards: Judges Choice and People’s Choice. There will be voting slips for the People’s Choice award at the desk in the exhibit building. Exhibit displays schedule: Saturday, Aug. 19: From 1 to 5 p.m., entries accepted at the Exhibit Building. Monday, Aug. 21: From 3 to 6 p.m., baked goods and vegetables will be accepted. Tuesday, Aug. 22: Closed for judging. Wednesday, Aug. 23: From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., open class floral displays will be accepted, then the Exhibit Building will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24: Open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25: Open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26: Open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. 40

Bull Wars continue for fourth year Bull Wars, now in its fourth year, will again be conducted during the 2017 Sanpete County Fair. The lucky business who wins the title will be proclaimed the “Best Bucking Business in Sanpete County.” In 2014, Wendy Jo Jensen initiated a new way for the Sanpete County Fair rodeo to give back to the community when she created an event called Bull Wars. Businesses “purchased” bulls that would carry their name into the arena while trying to get those pesky riders off their back. The winning bull with the highest score earned over both rodeo nights will earn $500 and the title of the “Best Bucking Business in Sanpete County.” The winner will be announced during the Saturday, Aug. 26, performance of the rodeo. Coloring contest winners on display at fair Elementary students across Sanpete County finished up the school year by entering the Sanpete County Fair Coloring Contest hosted by Andrew Olsen of Ephraim. Kindergarten through fifth-grade classes from the county’s schools sent in 547 entries for a chance to win. The coloring contest picture was a simple line drawing created by Calan Olsen, Ephraim, of a Fun on the Farm scene. Entries were judged on creativity, neatness and color scheme. Five winners in each grade were selected in the coloring contest and each will receive a Thursday night rodeo ticket and meal deal to be redeemed during the Sanpete County Fair. Judges were impressed by the large number of amazing entries they received, which made choosing the winners difficult. There was also a contest to name the new character, a silage truck. Mason Murphy from Mt. Pleasant was chosen as the winner in this contest by naming the truck “Axel.” Winning entries will be displayed in the Fun on Farm buildings at the Sanpete County Fair. Water is a prominent feature of what looks like fun and games but in reality is life-saving training during the annual Fireman’s Challenge. This year’s challenge will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m.
Firemen to get drenched in challenging competition Each year, fire crews from Sanpete communities are challenged to prove they have what it takes to handle the rigors of service while having fun in the process as part of the Fireman’s Challenge. It is one of the most crowdpleasing events of the Sanpete County Fair. This year’s Fireman’s Challenge is sure to be a drenching success. It will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. and will be the highlight of a day filled with all sorts of water fun. All fire departments from around the valley are eligible to participate in the challenge and can take home cash prizes and trophies. What looks like fun and games to the public is, in reality, life-saving training. Teams participate in timed events and drills; some involve a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). This is an interactive event that will not only entertain but also educate spectators with the hope of encouraging more people to volunteer for the local fire departments. Sanpete County Fair
Events are relay type, many of which showcase the fireman’s mastery of the equipment and life-saving skills. Water is a prominent feature of this event, and there will be a splash zone. So, a word of caution: people sitting in certain rows will likely get a bit damp or perhaps quite soaked. Sponsors from local businesses will provide the cash jackpot for the winning fire department. One hundred percent of the money raised will go directly back to the fire departments. Manti Fire Department won the challenge in 2013 and 2014. The Wales Fire Department has won the cash prize and traveling trophy in 2015 and 2016. Come see who wins the challenge this year on Saturday, Aug. 19, in the fairgrounds arena. The gates for the Fireman’s Challenge will open at 6:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7 p.m. This has been a popular event in the past and this year’s challenge will be no different. 51
Competition to heat up Dutch ovens Aug. 19 Prepare now to create that favorite Dutch oven dish using that wonderful family secret recipe. Be it a cobbler, casserole, brisket, beans, potatoes or a sinful dessert, contestants will be going for top prizes in the annual Sanpete County Fair Dutch Oven Cook-Off. The event will be held Aug. 19 just prior to the Fireman’s Challenge. Don’t worry about a lack of expertise; come join in the Dutch oven food and fun for the afternoon. The cookoff will be held next to the pavilion at the fairgrounds in Manti. Bring completed entry forms (printed in back of this book) to the pavilion. Dutch oven history Dutch ovens are a distinctive cooking pot which has thick walls and is generally manufactured from cast iron. It can be cast iron with an enameled finish, but in any case it has a tight-fitting lid. Dutch ovens have been used for centuries within kitchens around the globe as a cooking vessel. The phrase “Dutch oven” has been around and used for more than 300 years. During the 1600s, the Dutch discovered a significantly better system for producing molds for casting the pots using sand, which makes the resulting pots have a much smoother surface. Throughout the history of America, the cooking pots have become shallower and legs have been added to better keep the pot above the hot coals on an open fire. Early colonists appreciated the flexibility and sturdiness associated with cast iron. In fact, the ovens were regarded as being so useful that early colonists entered them into their wills. Rapidly, this new oven came to be greatly valued by American colonists, mainly because its cast-iron construction caused it to be really long-lasting while its design helped bring about the notable versatility. The truth is that housewives seldom called for any other sort of pot because the Dutch oven pot may be employed for boiling, frying, stewing or roasting as well as baking - all in one. In 1704, a man named Abraham Darby traveled from England to Holland to inspect a Dutch casting process by which brass vessels where cast in dry sand molds. Upon returning to England, Darby experimented with 52
the process and eventually patented a casting process using a better type of molding sand as well as a process of baking the mold to improve casting smoothness. He eventually began casting pots and shipping them to the new colonies and throughout the world. Others have suggested that early Dutch traders or salesmen peddling cast iron pots may have given rise to the name “Dutch oven.” Still others believe that the name came from Dutch settlers in the Pennsylvania area who used similar cast iron pots or kettles. To this day, the name Dutch oven is applied to various cast pots or kettles. The most common application of the name is to a cast iron pot or kettle with a flat bottom and three legs to hold the oven above the coals as well as a flat, flanged lid for holding coals. These ovens have a steel bail handle attached to “ears” on each side of the oven near the top for carrying. No matter what you call it or what shape it is cast to, a wellprepared meal from a Dutch oven has a delicious flavor unmatched by most other cookware.

Fun on the Farm provides hands-on farming fun Located inside the Sanpete County fairgrounds behind the swimming pool, Fun on the Farm is now celebrating its ninth year of fun. Created by Calan Olsen, it comes to life again this year on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 24 and 25, from 4-7 p.m., and on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Children in second grade and younger need to be accompanied by an adult to participate. Fun on the Farm offers fair visitors an opportunity to experience “hands-on” agricultural activities and is free of charge to everyone. The activities include feeding turkeys, holding a live cockroach, milking a cow, learning the cuts of pork, collecting eggs, delivering hay, carding wool, branding a cow and more. An estimated 2,000 visitors attend the exhibit each year. In the near future, it is expected that a silo for seeds and grains will be added along with some landscaping. Some of the buildings have had a facelift and there will be new trees! These are much-needed improvements and people have been so good to help with their time and money. Youth to show livestock The Sanpete County Jr. Livestock Show has been conducted annually at the Sanpete County Fair since the mid-1980s. The livestock show is a great educational program for youth ages 9-18. Youth registered with 4-H or FFA participate by purchasing a calf, a pig, a lamb or (new this year) a goat. They feed, groom and exercise the animals for 60 to 100 days. The youth also study animal science and how to lead and show the animal. All of the hard work and study is challenged at the livestock show where youth demonstrate their livestock projects to a judge. The final event is the Livestock Auction/Sale where members of the community and local businesses purchase or contribute a donation to purchase a livestock project animal. The livestock is processed at a local meat processing plant for a good supply of high-quality meat for the buyer. There are many volunteers who work hard to provide this great learning experience to the 4-H and FFA youth. Please come and support this great youth educational experience. Junior Rodeo provides action for ‘little buckaroos’ The Sanpete County Fair Board is excited to bring back the Junior Rodeo in 2017. The Junior Rodeo will be held on Friday Aug. 18, at 6 p.m. in the fairgrounds arena. The rodeo will include many events such as mutton bustin’ for ages 3 to 6. The entry fee is $10 for mutton busting’, and there will be trophies for the top three riders. The top six riders will be invited back to ride Thursday night as pre-rodeo entertainment with a winner-takes-all trophy presented to the top rider that night. Calf riding will be offered for ages 7 to 9. The entry fee is $15. There will be a buckle for first place and trophies for second and third places. There will also be steer riding for ages 10-13. There will be lots of fun in the mud at the fair on Saturday, Aug. 26. First, the adult volleyball tournament gets the mud soft at 9 a.m. Then at 2 p.m., the kids get to scramble in the mud for balloons loaded with cash and prizes. It all takes place at the Sanpete County Fair in Manti.
Mud, mud everywhere, but lots of fun at the fair Get ready to rumble in the mud through participating in either the Children’s Mud Scramble or one of the slippery, sloppy, riotous games in the Mud Volleyball Tournament at this year’s fair. Mud Volleyball Tournament The annual Sanpete County Fair Mud Volleyball Tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 9 a.m. The event will be held in the mud volleyball pit on the west side of the fairgrounds (right behind Manti’s swimming pool). There will be a limit of eight teams, so be quick to get entered to participate. Teams can be businesses, high school groups, families, church groups or any other mix of players. To enter a team, contact Steven at 435-851-7437 or Tina Roberts at 435-851-2550 before Aug. 21. They will prepare the play-off brackets. Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. Come and enjoy the fun in the mud. Here are some recommended tips: 60
1. Wear stuff to play in that won’t be worn again. 2. Plan in advance ways to keep the car clean after the games. 3. There will be hoses to wash off with after the games. 4. Don’t focus on winning as much as playing and having fun. Kids Mud Scramble Kids and mud are always a great combination. Add prizes to that and it makes for a fabulous afternoon of fun on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m. Kids in three age groups will plunge and dive in the mud to find balloons loaded with cash and prizes. Each participant in age groups 3 to 4, 5 to 7 and 8 to 10 receives a prize. Hoses will be waiting in the wings to gently spray down the participants following the scramble. Find the mysterious people, win cash Somewhere in Sanpete County there are three mysterious people just waiting to be discovered - one in the north end, one smack dab in the middle and one in the south. The contest is on, so put on those detective hats and turn on the brain power to search for clues throughout these fair book pages to discover who these three elusive characters are. The clues are in the ads, numbered 1, 2 and 3, with 10 clues for each. Make a list for each person and make an educated or wild guess as to who they are to be eligible for a cash prize. All 10 clues must be listed though they don’t have to be in any particular order. Each entry must be on a separate piece of paper and duplicates will be discarded. Demolition Derby action set for Friday, Aug. 26 “United We Grow” unless the dirt is being thrown at you from the spinning wheels of a derby car, then you cheer! On Friday August 25, at 7:00 p.m., local drivers will compete with those from out of the area for over $30,000.00 in cash and prizes. Local area businesses have been very generous in offering support for this long-standing entertainment. Small Animal Division, Poultry & Pigeons 4-H and Open Class Judging Friday, Aug. 24, 11 a.m. – Open to the public Supervisor Richard Port, home 435-436-8730, cell 435-851-4314 Rules: 1. No hay, straw or grass will be allowed in the cages. 2. Only registered 4-H members may enter their 4-H project in the 4-H class. 3. Entries will be accepted from noon to 6 p.m. on Aug. 24 and again from 8 to 9 a.m. on Aug. 25 prior to judging. 4. A maximum of $8 per person will be awarded. 5. The animal or poultry owner will be responsible to feed their own livestock. 6. All entries will be released Aug 26 before 6 p.m. Any entries not removed by 6 p.m. will be disposed of by the management. 7. All judging will be according to The American Standards of Perfection for Rabbits, Pigeons, Chickens, Ducks, Geese and Turkeys. 8. No rabbits under the age of eight weeks will be judged or allowed to be sold. 9. If an owner wishes to sell any animal, that arrangement is solely between owner and buyer. Supervisor Richard Port will not handle money or arrange deals.
