3 injured in crash BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Three individuals were transported to Magnolia Regional Health Center following a threecar accident around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. A female driver and passenger were injured when their 2004 Ford Grand Am collided with a 2000 Pontiac Montana Minivan. The male driver of the minivan was also transported to MRHC. A Ford Fusion was also involved in the wreck, but no individuals were injured as they attempted to enter U.S. Highway 72 east from Sara Lane. According to witnesses at the scene, the 2004 Grand Am was headed east on Highway 72 when the minivan – traveling west – attempted to turn onto Sara Lane and turned into the car’s path. Significant front-end damage was done to both vehicles as the accident interrupted the flow of traffic for over 30 minutes.

FARMINGTON — Numerous cities across Mississippi will hold party primary elections on Tuesday. For the first time, Farmington is among them. It is the only Alcorn County municipality in which residents will head to the polls between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to elect leadership. The Republican Party primary will decide the outcome for Farmington, and there will be no general election in June. The city has six candidates for the five seats on the Board of Aldermen, and the top five will be elected. In-person absentee voting concluded Saturday morning. Candidates are Lowell Gann, Mac Grisham, Bill Hebert, Jeff Patterson, Johnny Potts and

Mikey Wilbanks. Incumbent Ernest Cole, who joined the board in 2010, is not running. Gann is seeking a third non-consecutive term; Grisham is seeking a third term; and Hebert and Potts are seeking second terms. Patterson is a former Farmington alderman and former county supervisor for the 2nd District. The mayor’s race is uncontested as Dale Fortenberry gets ready for a third term. It is a paper ballot, and voters will put an “X” in the box next to each of their choices. The only other contested municipal race in Alcorn County this year will be the June 4 general election in Rienzi, which has 11 people running for the Board of Aldermen. Corinth’s elections are coming up in 2014.

Sunny skies greet record race day BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

The record day was a perfect one for running. Over 1,200 runners agreed. Things didn’t look good late Friday as rain pounded Corinth and the temperature fell 20 degrees. Saturday was a different story as the sun came out and produced ideal weather for participants of the 32nd Annual Corinth Coca-Cola Classic 10K.

“I woke up and walked outside early this morning and saw the moon shining … I knew then it was going to be a good day,” said race founder Kenneth Williams. “It was absolutely perfect.” “We were blessed beyond request,” added race co-coordinator Mona Lisa Gray. “Everything ran very smooth.” Saturday’s annual run – which set a record with 1,500 registered runners/walkers – through

the streets of Corinth saw some memorable moments over the 6.2 mile course. Five Corinth firemen covered the course with 30 pounds of gear. “This was something we thought about doing just to see if we could do it,” said fireman Chris Duncan. “We wanted to be able to complete the race without

On this day in history 150 years ago Ohio Sen. Clement L. Vallandigham, one of the leading peace democrats, or “Copperheads,” is arrested. An outspoken Southern sympathizer, he has branded the war “wicked and cruel.” His supporters riot and burn several pro-administration newspapers in Cincinnati. He is later banished to the Confederacy.
