Dancers, Symphony join forces for the ‘Nutcracker’ BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Turning Point Dance Academy is bringing a piece of the “Nutcracker” to Corinth. The academy will be part of the Corinth Symphony Orchestra's Annual Christmas Concert on Dec. 2 at the Coliseum Civic Center.

“We are hoping this will be the start of a regular event,” said dance academy director Crystal Sweeney-Scarbrough. “Corinth has so much talent that it's a shame not to use it.” Turning Point dancers are set to perform the Sugar Plum Fairy, Russian, Chinese, and Arabian dances in their “Best

of the Nutcracker” during the symphony's “Home for the Holidays” concert at 2 p.m. “We are tickled to be part of the symphony concert,” said Sweeney-Scarbrough. “I can't think of any other time when something like this ballet was Please see CONCERT | 10A

WALNUT — Jesus Name Community Church is hoping the public can be filled spiritually as well as physically during its dinner theater. “Christmas At Our Church,” a production in its third year, is out to do both Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. “There isn't really anything like it around,” said director Jeremy Edwards of the production. Tickets to the dinner theater are $15 for adults, $10 for children with kids under 4 admitted free if they are sitting in a lap or $5 if not. Groups of 15 or more can purchase tickets for $12. “We had good results doing this the first year and have just kept doing it,” said Edwards. The latest production, entitled “Misdeeds At Mistletoe Mine ... or the Sanity Clause” is a play by Tim Koenig. “The story is all about forgiveness,” said Edwards. Holly Hock, a little orphan girl, has inherited a gold mine with no gold and a hotel with no guests. Her aunt, Rose Bush, has stepped in to take

both Holly and the failing business under her wing. The future seems bright for Holly and Rose when Redmond Wood comes to town. The villainous mayor William Z. Lucifer has other plans and sets out to drive Red out of town and take custody of Holly. “The production is full of wit with a gentle religious message that goes beyond the ordinary good triumphs over evil,” add-

Home & Garden Tour to feature concerts BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

A ticket to the Corinth Home & Garden Tour includes admission to three mini-concerts at the Fillmore Street Chapel. Set for 11 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, and 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, all at the Fillmore Street Chapel, each concert will have a different lineup performing Christmas music for about 30 minutes. Saturday’s 11 a.m. performance features the offbeat combination of a 46-string harp played by Cindy Mathis and a soprano saxophone played by Ben McLemore, a Kossuth High School graduate and Ole Miss student pursuing a master’s in music education. They will combine on “In the Bleak Midwinter,” “The Christmas Song” and other Christmas classics. “We played for a wedding in the spring and really enjoyed playing together,” said Mathis. “It was a pretty combination.” McLemore is looking forward to their encore. “I had never played with a harp before,” he said. “Normally, at school, it’s just me with piano accompaniment.” The Friday shows begin with the Corinth Music Club at 11 a.m. performing “Christmas

The Corinth High School Choir under the direction of Anita Temple will sing at 1:45 p.m. with a variety of Christmas carols. The performances will offer an opportunity to take a break between the tour stops and to hear the chapel’s original 1900 pipe organ. The chapel, which is one of the tour stops along with the Williams home at 1302 Taylor Street, will also have a collection of Nativity scenes on display. Tickets cost $10 and are available in advance at the tourism office or at the tour stops on tour day.

For one local group, the best way to start the day is with music. The Corinth Music Club recently held a Mid-Morning Sacred Music Concert for the public at the First United Methodist Sanctuary. The concert was conducted by program leader Donna Janzen and featured musical selections performed by club members. The first performer was Peggy McCord on the organ. She performed two versions of “If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee — by composer J.S. Bach and celebrated organist Helmut Walcha. “She then played two rich and colorful hymn arrangements by Robert Powell, ‘How Firm a Foundation’ and ‘I am Bound for the Promised Land,’” said Bobbi Campbell, reporter for the Corinth Music Club. Marianne Taylor then performed contemporary singer, DJ and record producer Dino’s stirring arrangement Please see CLUB | 2A

On this day in history 150 years ago The Union supply depot at Holly Springs continues to grow. Downtown buildings are filled with cases of rifles and pistols as well as boxes of ammunition and clothing.
