Wheeler Grove Baptist Church is honoring those who protect America on a daily basis. God and Country Day will be held October 28 from 10 a.m. until noon. The church is located at 21 County Road 519. “This will be a very special occasion and something we can never do too much,” said church minister of music Steve Byrd. The church will be recognizing those in the military, firefighters along with those associated with the police department and sheriff's office. “We want to give the highest honor and recognition to those who serve in our military and our local heroes,” said Byrd. “These men and women risk their lives to protect us each and every day.” Former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore will be the guest speaker. Moore, who in 2003 was unanimously removed him from office by fellow judges due to his repeated refusal to comply with a federal court order requiring him

to remove a giant Ten Commandments monument that he installed in the state’s judicial building, will speak about the importance of the flag. Moore first grabbed national headlines in the mid-1990s when the ACLU threatened to sue him for displaying a copy of the Ten Commandments in his courtroom. The controversy helped catapult him to win election as Alabama chief justice in 2000. He then installed his granite monument of the Ten Commandments after taking office. A flag folding ceremony will be conducted by Colonel Doug Hayhurst, who is retired from the U.S. Army. “The importance of the American flag, its true meaning and what is stands for will be emphasized,” said Byrd. “The special service will also give the highest honor and greatest respect to our Fallen Mississippi Soldiers.” The Heisman Quartet, Loveless Family, Mary Ann Johnson, Tiffany Blackard, Byrd along with the church choir and children's choir will provide special music. A fellowship meal will be held following the service.

The Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center was busy Friday as National Park Service rangers wrapped up the last day of the Battle of Corinth 150th anniversary commemoration. On the grassy hill where once stood Battery Robinett, near the monument to slain Confederate Col. W.P. Rogers, Park Ranger Jim Minor led a battlefield hike that told the story of the aftermath of the Battle of Corinth — the Confederate retreat and the beginning of the Union pursuit. “It was a mess,” said Minor, himself a veteran of the Vietnam War. “Did you ever see that movie ‘Patton’ when he had to get out at the crossroads and direct traffic? That’s what it was like here.” On Friday first and second grade students from Corinth Elementary School visited the Interpretive Center to learn about the war at a series of stations on the battlefield and participate in Civil War-themed activities.

Using scripture as a reference, she will teach how women can use each room of their homes in a different way to serve their families. Lamphere

Shiloh Park Ranger Marcus Johnson tells the story of Andrew Jackson Smith to third-grade students from Corinth Elementary School at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center on Friday. A nearby train whistle moans and reminds many of the reason the war came to Corinth in the first place. Across the hillside Park Ranger Rachel Winters — immaculately clad in a

long 19th century dress — led a discussion about Civil War civilian life for a group of third grade students. At another station Park Ranger Marcus Johnson taught
