Gas station demolition remains unresolved Despite executive session, no solution is the ‘status quo’ BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com
The Corinth Board of Mayor and Aldermen reached no resolution of the situation regarding the demolition of the old gas station at 600 Fillmore Street during Tuesday night’s meeting. During a closed door executive
session the board discussed efforts to resolve the situation, said City Attorney Wendell Trapp. “It’s pretty much the status quo, said Trapp. “But no resolution has been reached. No vote was taken. On April 13 the city halted an attempt to demolish the build-
ing because the owner, John Dodd, did not have a required demolition permit or clearance from the preservation committee. The building came down on May 23, while a construction crew worked to remove asbestos, according to attorney Nick Bain, representing the property
owner. According to attorney Bill Davis, representing the city on the matter, the demolition of the rest of the building that followed the partial collapse was not authorized by the city. On May 29 the Corinth Preservation Committee passed a mo-
tion encouraging the city to enforce the law on what it deemed a willful demolition of the old gas station property, which was listed as a contributing building in the Downtown Corinth Historic District. Penalties can include a fine and a requirement to rebuild the structure.

A spraying program to keep city drainage districts clean got under way Tuesday afternoon. ChemPro Services, out of Ocean Springs, started with the Phillips Drainage District and will also be working on the Bridge and Elam Districts on the project that should take a couple of weeks, according to street commissioner Philip Verdung. “Our goal is to eliminate the growth that effects the flow of water at all three districts, said Verdung. “We will be going back and applying herbicides to maintain the creeks and keep them clean. Verdung said the city plans to have the spraying done one to two times a year in the future to prevent regrowth and blockages. “We don’t want to get rid of everything because that will cause erosion, said Verdung. “Weeds and other types of undesirable growth that will cause flooding is what we want to eliminate. The three creeks were mulched as part of cleanup efforts last month.

A settlement has been reached in the trial in U.S. District Court for a wrongful death lawsuit stemming from a gas explosion at an Alcorn County residence. According to Booneville attorney Casey Lott — who is representing the children of Geraldine Mullins — the defendant, Pacer-Pittman Propane LLC, offered twice its initial amount to settle and Lott’s clients accepted the settlement on Monday morning. The settlement came while the jury was deliberating the verdict, at the end of a two-week trial in Aberdeen, which finished Friday. In December 2010 a propane gas explosion at a residence on County Road 676 resulted in severe injuries to the 67-year-old Mullins, who died the following April as the result of pneumonia related to the injuries. Four of Mullins’ children sued Pacer-Pittman Propane, alleging negligence and seeking damages including medical expenses from the date of the explosion until her death, pain and suffering, funeral expenses and
