A red flashing light means stop. Not speed up. Knowing that could mean the difference between life and death for motorists. Kansas City Southern and the Corinth Police Department want the public to be more aware when it come to railroad safety. The two spent over an hour training to promote safety at railroad crossings on Thursday with an Officer on a Train event. “Working with local law enforcement to raise awareness is simply the best way to a marked difference in this important public safety matter,” said KCS Public Safety Director Allen Pepper. “We just want to educate people on the right thing to do when a red flash is flashing or a gate is down.” Corinth assistant chief Scotty Harville was stationed on the engine while officers Mark Luker and Jerry Barnes observed

traffic at the crossings during the training session KCS does 25-30 times a year. “The training gives them a chance to see how traffic reacts as a train approaches a crossing,” said Pepper. “This is positive training,” added Harville as officers were prepared to stop motorists if a violation was committed. “We just want them to be more aware when a train is nearing a crossing.” Luker believes more education is always beneficial. “Any time you go through training, it makes you better,” he said. “It makes you focus on the violations and hopefully, this will help us make the public more conscious of the dangers at railroad crossings.” According to Operation Lifesaver – a non-profit rail safety education program – a person or vehicle is hit by a train every three hours.
