Talk begins on appointed police chief BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
A Corinth aldermen wants the city to consider changing its method of choosing a police chief from elected to appointed. The Board of Aldermen passed a motion by Ward 1 Alderman Andrew Labas to have
a discussion of an appointed police chief in the next regular board meeting on May 21. âThe city of Corinth is in the minority in the way we currently elect our police chief,â Labas said. âI donât want this to be seen negatively in any way on the job of our current police
chief or the job that he has done in that department. However, I am looking down the road ⌠I think itâs a discussion that we need to have as a board as to the direction of this department in particular on how itâs going to proceed going forward.â The change would require a
resolution amending the city charter. It may also require an election, said City Attorney Wendell Trapp. A proposed resolution read by Labas noted numerous reasons to appoint a police chief, such as: â Allowing the board to
choose a candidate based on qualifications rather than popularity; â An appointed superintendent of schools has been beneficial to the city; â the unlikeliness of a minorPlease see CHIEF | 2A
Tickets still available for concert BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Travis Tritt
There is still time for some T-R-O-U-B-L-E at the Crossroads Arena. Plenty of good seats remain for the May 17 concert of Travis Tritt at the multi-purpose facility. Trittâs visit will be the first concert of 2013 at the Arena. âSales have picked up and we are getting quiet a few calls,â said Cindy Davis with the Crossroads Arena. Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are still available with floor seating being $38. General Admission riser seating is available for $28. About 1,200 tickets have been sold as of
Tuesday afternoon. âSome thought the show was sold out because there were no VIP seats left,â said Davis. Tritt â one of the leading country singers of the early 1990s â is set to release his first single in six years on Fatherâs Day. âSometimes Love Just Ainât Enoughâ will be out on June 16 and is a remake of the Patty Smyth and Don Henley duet. Tritt and his 15-yearold daughter, Tyler Reese, sing the remake. Originally recorded for his 2007 album The Storm, the track was shelved when a suitable duet partner could not be secured in time for the albumâs release. The Grammy winning
singer and songwriter received ownership of the albumâs masters from his former label last year. The Marietta, Ga. native found a duet partner close to home after his daughter heard the song returning home from a trip to Florida. âShe had never heard the song and started singing along in the backseat,â said Tritt. âI told my wife that I thought Tyler Reese could really do a great job on this song.â The two soon headed to the studio. âI know I sound like a biased parent, but she really nailed Please see TRITT | 2A

Those wanting a juicy rib-eye steak have until 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. to bite into one. âThis is one of our biggest fundraisers and we do really well at Loweâs,â said Civitan and steak sale chairman Tim Wood. âIt will make a great Motherâs Day gift.â Tickets are $10 and includes an 8-ounce rib-eye steak, baked beans, cole slaw and bread. Tickets can be purchased from Civitan members Tina Bugg at Trustmark Bank on Fillmore, Debra Gallaher at BancorpSouth on 72, Joe Garrett at Farm Bureau Insurance, Rick Miller at Miller Insurance or Dr. Mike Weeden at the Corinth Eye Clinic. Tickets can also be purchased on the day of the event. âAll the money goes to the projects we
sponsor every year,â added Wood. Each year the Civitan Club sponsors youth teams at the park, donates to the Lighthouse Foundation, gives to a menâs home and provides scholarships for high school graduates. The club also is partnered with Belk in the Belkâs Children Day that helps 10-12 underprivileged youngsters in Alcorn County during Christmas. âOur focus is needy children,â said the event chairman. Last year, the club sold 450 steaks and made around $3,000 for its projects. The club averages around 400 steaks sold every year with a record 500 sold in 2011. âTwo years ago, a ton of Loweâs employees ate with us,â said club president Kalin Burcham. âWe wonât run out. There will be plenty,â added Wood. The steaks come from Rogerâs Supermarket.

The annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is back, giving residents an easy opportunity to help stock the AMEN Food Pantry by simply leaving a sack of nonperishable food items by the mailbox. Mail carriers delivered a sack for the food drive to local addresses on Tuesday. The event has been a success locally with results measured by the thousands of pounds. âIt seems like every year we have been able to increase our poundage by about 1,000,â said mail carrier Buddy Shumaker. âLast year, it was in the mid4,000 range.â All city and rural carriers are Please see FOOD | 2A
