CVB program director gives resignation BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Along with the tourism director, the Corinth CVB’s program director has submitted her resignation. Karen Beth Martin, who joined the Corinth tourism office in 2008, submitted her resignation to Tourism Director Kristy White

on Friday. It is effective Jan. 25, but Martin has essentially departed, using accumulated vacation time. White, who submitted her resignation on Thursday in light of the budget dispute and removal of the tourism board, is still in the office this week. Her resignation is effective with the next sched-

uled board meeting on Jan. 15. The program director has served as market manager for the popular Green Market event. She was also facilitator for the various committees and the loop group; worked on the chili cook-off and Grand Illumination events; and updated the calendar of events, web and social media content.

Both White and Martin faced pay cuts in the budget as revised by aldermen and supervisors. The new tourism board members are Russell Smith, Danny Timmons, Pauline Sorrell, Billy Taylor, Luke Doehner, Laura Albright and Sandy Mitchell. The appointment of Mitchell is pending a legal question regarding

her salary coming through the county. The old tourism board was ousted last week, and the city and county moved quickly to make new appointments. The situation stems from disagreement over a cut of 43 percent from the tourism budget to divert $250,000 to Crossroads Arena.

The Project Attention Center is turning its focus to family for the 12th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. It is set for 5 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Easom Outreach Foundation Community Center in the former South Corinth Elementary School campus. The program will seek to inspire with positive messages from the community and in memory of the late civil rights leader. Parents of Project Attention students will make brief introductions of their children, and the Walker family — James, Ann, Jay and Marty — will share a message. “They were one of the first families to be involved in our program back 20 years ago,” said Shirley Rolland, activities facilitator and site coordinator. “We want to give attention to some positive people in the community.” King’s actual birthdate is Jan. 15, but the national holiday is observed on the third Monday in January each year. The Project Attention event has normally been held during the weekend prior to the holiday, but a decision was made this year to hold it on the holiday. “We’re having it on the holiday because we want to be aligned with that,” said Rolland. ‘It’s a day on, not a day off. We always want to remember Dr. King and his inspiration as a person who showed ‘yes, we can’ when there are a

The Alcorn County Tournament enjoyed a success it hasn’t seen in a while. ACT IX came close to besting the record numbers established in the first year of the tournament at the Crossroads Arena. Over the three days, 3,380 attended. The total is the second best recorded. The top mark is the 3,804 who attended in 2005. Championship night was also a big night as all four Alcorn County schools were represented in both varsity title games. The Saturday total saw 1,576 paying customers come through. The oneday record is 1,757 during the 2005 championship night. The 2013 event was up 163 from last year, according to the Crossroads Arena’s Cindy Davis. “Having every county team represented on the final night makes a difference,” said Davis. The only other event to eclipse the 3,000 mark other than 2005 and this year was the 2006 tournament, which saw 3,103 come through the doors. Three people walked away with a $100 after sinking a free throw on Friday night. Cathy Nash, Jordan Mills and Teddy Mask all netted their attempts for the cash. “I think everything went great,” said first-year tourPlease see ACT | 2A

Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter releases fundraising calendar BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Dog is man’s best friend. But there is also room for a feline. The Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter is counting on it with the release of its “Real Men Love Cats Too” calendar. “This was a great way to get the community involved with the shelter,” said director Charlotte Doehner. Doehner decided to try the project in hopes of helping the shelter trim its budget deficit

after attending an American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) expo in the spring. “We came back and brainstormed,” said the shelter director. Doehner and volunteers decided to go with the idea of big, burly guys with cats. “We wanted men from all walks of life,” said Doehner. Junior Auxiliary seeking nominees for Outstanding Citizen BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com

The Junior Auxiliary of Corinth needs the community’s help with honoring its 51st annual Outstanding Citizen. The organization has mailed letters to local civic organizations seeking nominations for the community leader who will receive their most prestigious award in 2013. The winner will be honored at the yearly Charity Event slated for Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Crossroads Arena. Here’s how it works: Selection is made from nominations by civic groups, church groups

and individuals. As in the past, the Junior Auxiliary requests that nominations be made on a Junior Auxiliary Outstanding Citizen Application, which can be picked up at the Corinth Library, the Alliance or the Daily Corinthian. Supporting information for the candidate is welcomed — such as personal letters from friends, colleagues or individuals the candidate has served. Criteria used in the evaluation of nominees are: attainments in personal life; participation in church, civic and other organizations; work with youth,

underprivileged and/or handicapped; contributions to the community; and potential for continuing achievement. All nominations and supporting data must be submitted by Friday, Feb. 1, to Candace Marlar at PO Box 2476, Corinth, MS 38835. All nominations are confidential and will be kept on file for three years. To reactivate a nomination, it should be updated yearly with current information mailed to Marlar at the above address by the deadline on Feb. 1. Past recipients of the Outstanding Citizen are: the late
