Fixture atop FUMC lowered for needed work BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

They came early with camera phones in hand. A fixture for over 50 years was coming down. As the First United Methodist Church steeple was being lowered to the ground, around 15 people who attend the church were there to record the event. “It has been here since the church was built,” said Todd Taylor, a member of the church’s trustee committee. “The steeple has been painted numerous times, but it just doesn’t last … it’s hard to do a good paint job when you are 75feet in the air.” The steeple, a part of the building since 1959, is headed just up the road in Burnsville where it will be stripped and powder covered before returning atop the church again. It will also be given a more updated look with LED lights. “The lighting will be something different that will change with the seasons,” said Taylor. “Our goal is to make the building look new, but at the same time keep the character of the past.” Buddy Ayers Construction was in charge of the historic moment for the church located on Fillmore Street. Construction workers first took the cross off the top of the steeple, which is some 75-80 feet in the air, by using a 60-ton crane. Most of the 15-20 who attended stayed the entire little over two hours of the project,

SELMER, Tenn. — The clear winner was a “Sparkly Delight” in the Arts in McNairy 2013 Photo Contest. Nicole Parks took home Best In Show honors with her photograph of an unique moment in a colorful artistic manner. Parks bested 17 other photographers for the award and $100 prize. “It was an excellent portrait and highlighted the festive outdoor environment,” said contest coordinator Lanessa Miller Coulon. “The portrait was the only entry with multiple votes in the each of the four categories used by the jury.” Winners in the contest were honored at an awards reception at the Latta Visitor’s and Cultural Center on July 13. “We were happy with the results and welcome greater participation next year,” said Coulon of the 74 entries. First place winners in the annual photo contest included: Portrait/Close Up – Mark Boehler, “Enjoy a Stogie”; Environment/Long Shot – Rebecca Parent, “Morning Fog”; Moment Timing – Parent, “Frozen Lake”; Artistry/Digital Manipulation – Charles Randolph, “Double Exposure”. Celebrated husband and wife quilting duo Judith and Glenn Putnam were the special guests at the Piece Makers Quilt Guild’s 8th Anniversary Trunk Show on Thursday.

For one group of ladies who meet every month in Corinth, quilting is a way of life. The Piece Makers Quilt Guild meets every third Thursday of the month at the MSU Extension Center in Corinth, but members hail from all around the area — Booneville, Selmer, Stantonville, Tupelo, Savannah and parts more distant. The purpose of the group is to promote quilting and keep the art alive. They work on their projects individually and get together to donate their quilts to a number of causes, including the Oasis Center and the Sheriff’s Department. “We give them to the sheriff’s office for children in domestic

situations so they won’t have to wrap them up in a towel like they used to do,” explained member Peggy Morrison, or Corinth. Morrison is the “Sunshine Person” who sends out the notices to keep other members informed about what’s going on in the guild. Morrison has been quilting for the better part of 50 years, she said. “I started with my family and my mother,” she remembered. “I really enjoy doing it.” Although she’s an avid quilter, you won’t find many quilts at Morrison’s home. “I give everything away. — and received — participation from the kids and learned about several different aspects of Civil War history. The program began with a demonstration of how to fire a Civil War era rifle with Park

Ranger Jim Minor. The biggest part of the day was spent with Ranger Rachel Winters, who provided a detailed program on battlefield hospitals. Winters used relics from the era, including bone saws and

other surgical utensils to give her listeners an understanding of the extreme conditions and medical practices used by doctors and nurses on and off the Please see TEACHNG | 2A
