The Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center, a part of Shiloh National Military Park, explores the siege, battle and occupation of Corinth through interactive exhibits, videos of the Battles of Shiloh and Corinth, and an educational water feature; but there is so much more to see in the Corinth area! Be sure to make stops at the Crossroads Museum/ Corinth Coca-Cola Museum, the Corinth Black History Museum, the Contraband Camp, the Corinth National Cemetery, the Corinth Artist Guild Gallery, Civil War Earthworks, the Lake Hill Motors Museum, and Historic Downtown Corinth. People can often catch a free ride on the trolley during festivals and events including Green Market Saturdays. The Corinth Convention and Visitors Bureau office at 215 North Fillmore Street acts as the primary pickup and drop-off location.

There’s nothing more relaxing than a trolley ride through a historic little town. Heather Moore and Melissa King hope their passengers will agree after taking a ride on Corinth’s newest rolling attraction, the Crossroads Trolley. “Folks keep asking me, why a trolley,” said Moore, who co-owns the trolley with King. “Corinth is such an intimate and classic kind of place and I think a little trolley running around town gives it even more of that vintage feel.”

I have way too much fun cruising up and down the streets blaring a little Billie Holiday music in the trolley.” Heather Moore | Crossroads Trolley The trolley can be chartered on private tours of the historic town for $75 per hour on Monday-Thursday and $150 per hour on Friday-Sunday. The per hour cost includes 10 driven miles per hour. Any extra miles driven are $2 each. The two business partners came up with the idea of bringing a trolley to town after brain storming about a small venture that would benefit the community. “We searched for quite awhile,” said Moore. “We finally found the trolley in Jonestown, N.Y., purchased it and had it shipped to Corinth.” The bright white trolley with

vintage wooden seats can hold up to 25 passengers. “I was probably born in the wrong era,” added Moore. “I have way too much fun cruising up and down the streets blaring a little Billie Holiday music in the trolley.” Moore said the trolley is perfect for weddings, conventions, sightseeing tours, parades, church and event shuttles, birthday parties and progressive dinners. There are many packages to choose from or trolley staff can create a personalized package. Moore consulted with Visitor’s Bureau Director Christy Burns before making the purchase. “We talked about offering special Corinth-themed tours featuring local history stops, Civil War sites and more,” said Burns. “I love the trolley. I think it’s a great asset to downtown.” With support from local businesses there may be more normal trolley stops added around town. l

Crossroads Arena
Facility plays hosts to a wide variety of entertainment
Crossroads Arena has been bringing the very best in entertainment to the area for over a decade. From rodeos to country music star Luke Bryan, the multi-purpose 10
facility is also home to the Alcorn County Basketball Tournament each year. Opened in November of 1999, the facility has played host to such events as trade shows, concerts and
even weddings. Crossroads Arena put together a record-breaking year in 2014. Over 7,400 fans packed the complex in March for Brantley Gilbert’s “Let It Ride” concert. The huge turnout bested the previous attendance mark of over 7,300 set during the Luke Bryan concert in May of 2012. According to general manager Tammy Genovese, the Crossroads Arena broke all previous marks in attendance, concessions and merchandise sales during the Gilbert event.
“Those kinds of successes will help us build the arena reputation and assist in achieving its goals,” said the general manager. Less than a month later, the facility established another record. The Newsboys broke the old mark of attendance by a Christian group with 2,456 on April 11. A four-time Grammy nominated band, Newsboys eclipsed the 2,323 who attended a Castings Crowns show in October of 2013. Crossroads Arena has a seating capacity of 7,708. The complex 11

Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center
Civil War Interpretive Center interprets the key role of Corinth in the Western Theatre of the American Civil War. The 15,000 square foot facility features interactive exhibits and a multi-media presentation of the Battle of Shiloh and the Battle of Corinth. The center stands near the site of Battery Robinett, a Federal fortification where some of the bloodiest fighting of the Battle of Corinth took place.

Visitors reach the center by ascending a walkway strewn with bronze replicas reflecting the aftermath of battle. At the building’s entrance, visitors pass six bronze Civil War soldiers marching into the center at double-quick. On the grounds, full scale reproductions of earthworks explain the importance of field fortifications. An extensive courtyard exhibit is home to a water feature commemorating two hundred years of American history. The center also houses a seventyfive seat auditorium, public research library, and a gift shop/ bookstore.

Visitors can get a glimpse of the historic Crossroads from the safety of the museum’s interior gallery. A bright red retired caboose sits on the museum grounds and is open to the public during normal museum hours. The latest addition to the museum grounds includes a Civil War cannon and carriage. contrabandcamp.htm Many African-Americans who fled Southern plantations and farms seeking freedom and protection, found the Union-occupied Corinth to be a secure location. Union General Granville Dodge began to enlist these freedmen as teamsters, cooks and laborers. He actively recruited male refugees, armed them and placed them in charge of security at the newly organized camp in Corinth. Dodge’s administrative efforts led to the formation of the 1st Alabama Regiment of African Descent, consisting of approximately 1,000 men. Today a portion of this camp has been set aside to commemorate the events which changed the lives of so

many people. Beautiful bronze figures surround the trail through the camp, depicting the lives of these people considered to be “contraband” of war. Corinth National Cemetery 1551 Horton Street Hours: Daily, 8 a.m. to sunset Located on Horton Street, Corinth National Cemetery was founded in 1866 and is the final resting place for 1,793 known and 3,895 unknown soldiers representing 273 regiments from 15 states. The process of consecrating remains was begun in September 1864. The remains were gathered from some 15 to 20 battlefields or skirmish grounds from Corinth, Iuka, Holly Springs, Guntown and Farmington, Mississippi. By 1870, when the interment program was practically completed, Corinth was number sixteen in the order of National Cemeteries having 5,688 interments. Corinth’s Civil War Earthworks (Battery F, Beauregard Line & Fort Battery Robinett) Davis Street, Hwy 2 The City of Corinth offers visitors a multitude of Civil War related sites but none as impressive as the extant earthworks, which have survived not only military engagements, but the battles of time and development as well. They once encircled the city, protecting the vital railroad junction from advancing armies. Today they can be found in neighborhoods and wooded lots, a tangible reminder of another time. All of the earthworks are well 22
marked and have parking spaces or pull-offs and many offer racks for locking bicycles. A few of the sites are easily accessible, though most require a walk of from several hundred yards up to a mile. Wellmarked paths lead to the sites, and most have informative way side exhibits describing the individual earthworks. Colonel William P. Rogers statue 600 East Waldron Street Colonel Rogers, known as the hero of Battery Robinett, was mortally wounded in fighting on the second day of the Battle of Corinth, October 4, 1862. Federal General William Rosecrans ordered Colonel Rogers buried where he fell, an eternal reminder of Rogers’ ultimate sacrifice. In 1896, the Albert Sidney Johnston Camp #1164 of The United Confederate Veterans had the statue erected to honor their comrades and leader Colonel Rogers. The Statue, which once stood in the intersection of Waldron and Frankin Streets, is now over 100 years old and stands on the corner of the Alcorn County Court Square. A push of a button near the statue gives visitors an audio history. Historic Verandah/Curlee House 705 Jackson Street Originally built in 1857 for city of Corinth co-founder Hamilton Mask, the Verandah-Curlee House served as headquarters for several generals during the Civil War. The National Historic Landmark home is currently under major renovation.

Fought April 6, 7, 1862, the Battle of Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing) gave Federal General U.S. Grant his sternest test and witnessed the death of Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston, the highest ranking American ever killed in combat. A ten-mile, self guided driving tour begins at the Visitors Center, which features an orientation file and interpretive exhibits. Ranger lead programs are given seasonally. Coliseum Civic Center Ninety years ago, the palatial, multi-purpose Coliseum Civic Theater celebrated its opening in downtown Corinth. The Coliseum has been and remains today the most monumental theatre space in Corinth and the 24

surrounding area. Built in 1924 by self-styled architect, Benjamin Franklin Liddon, the Coliseum has long been integral to the cultural development of Northeast Mississippi as well as being architecturally significant in its city and state. Corinth offers a wide selection of things to experience The Corinth area has a long standing tradition of providing visitors and residents with a wide selection of festivals and events held throughout the year. From the unique Slugburger Festival to the crowd favorite Green Market, the many festivals and events held in Crossroads emit small 26
town southern hospitality. Corinth offers a variety of yearround events. • The Green Market at the Crossroads Museum is a monthly handmade and homegrown market busting at the seams with charm. The popular market takes place from 9 a.m., to 3 p.m., the first
Festivals & Events Saturday of each month, April - Sept., and the Saturday before Thanksgiving in the C.A.R.E. Garden at 221 North Fillmore Street. The downtown Corinth event is free to the public and provides an opportunity for artisans, farmers, gardeners and craftsmen to sell their wares in an open-air, grass roots setting. residents and visitors to gather and share their goods. The event is the banner fundraiser for the nearby museum, where visitors can enjoy free admission and live entertainment each market day. from every nook and cranny of North Mississippi converge on the Alcorn County Courthouse square in downtown Corinth. Old and young bluegrass performers take center stage at Pickin’ on the Square, a free event that provides a jamming good time. During the winter months, the weekly event moves indoors to the nearby Venue in the SoCo District. • The Corinth Symphony Orchestra is a major player in the arts community in Corinth. The group promotes a wide variety of orchestral and ensemble music through five concerts hosted each year. • Often called one of the state’s premier community theatres, Corinth Theatre-Arts season offers something for everyone with a variety of productions and readings. Held each spring, the two-day tour also features a popular Luncheon On The Lawn and a silent fine art auction presented by the Corinth Artist Guild Gallery. Proceeds from the tour benefit the preservation of the historic VerandahCurlee House, the home built by one of Corinth’s founders in 1857. • Runners and walkers from around the world head to Corinth the first Saturday each May for the second largest foot race in the state. The free to the public festival is also the site of one of the top political speakings in the state. • Corinth’s most unique festival is the Slugburger Festival. Named by Tripadvisor.com as one of America’s Wackiest Summer Events, this annual festival pays tribute to Corinth’s local culinary delight, a deep-fried meat and soy mix meal patty that once sold for a nickel (then called a slug). On May 3-5, skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces were fought at Farmington. Each year, the Battle of Farmington and the Battle of Corinth reenactments are held in October on the original battleground in Farmington. Watch this large scale Civil War reenactment as fighters battle on over 160-acres of Mississippi rolling hills.

Sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society, the three-day event attracts professional cooking teams from all over the south.
