Mayes claims girls are his, in-law says BY ADRIAN SAINZ AND SHEILA BURKE Associated Press

GUNTOWN — A Mississippi man killed a Tennessee mother and her teenage daughter so he could abduct two young sisters who are still missing, according to court documents filed Wednesday, and a relative says the suspect thought the two younger girls might be his daughters. The developments gave the first hint of a motive in the case that began in southwest Tennessee, stretched into Mississippi and led the FBI to put 35-year-

old Adam Christopher Mayes on its 10 Most Wanted list. Authorities said they think the missing girls, 12-year-old Alexandria and 8-year-old Kyliyah Bain, are still with Mayes nearly two weeks after he took them. Mayes’ mother-in-law told The Associated Press that Mayes thought he might be the girls’ father and it caused trouble in the marriage to her daughter, who’s jailed in the case. “She was tired of him doting on those two little girls that he claimed were his,” Josie Tate said in an exclusive phone interview with The Associated Press

on Wednesday. In an earlier interview, Tate’s daughter Bobbi Booth said Teresa Mayes suspected her husband was having an affair with Jo Ann Bain. Authorities refused to comment on the motive for the April 27 slayings and abductions at a Wednesday news conference. Mayes and his wife, Teresa, were charged in Bolivar, Tenn., on Wednesday with first-degree murder in the deaths of Jo Ann Bain and 14-year-old Adrienne Bain. Their bodies were found buried outside the Mayes’ home near Guntown, a week after they were reported missing by Jo

Ann Bain’s husband, Gary. Teresa Mayes told investigators she saw her husband kill the two in the garage at the Bain home near Whiteville, Tenn., and then she drove him, the younger girls and the bodies to Mississippi, affidavits filed in court say. The mother and older girl were killed so Mayes could take the younger sisters, the affidavit said. Federal authorities pleaded for the public’s help in finding the sisters and urged Mayes to surrender.

The office of the Mississippi state auditor confirms that it has an active investigation regarding possible school district embezzlement in Alcorn County. Lisa Shoemaker, a spokeswoman for the auditor’s office, said details will not be discussed, including which of the two local school districts is involved, before the investigation reaches a resolution. That could be upon an arrest or a demand issued by the auditor. “It’s always possible, too, that we investigate something and don’t find anything,” said Shoemaker. The auditor’s office recently announced the indictment of a Lee County School District employee, Randy Thweatt, on two counts of embezzlement. “This is one of several cases the State Auditor’s Office is working involving school district employees allegedly embezzling,” State Auditor Stacey Pickering said in a news release about that indictment.

“Turn the girls in, and then peaceably and safely turn yourself in to law enforcement, FBI Special Agent Aaron Ford said at the news conference. Officials said the reward for information “leading directly to the arrest of Mayes is now $175,000. Since the manhunt began for Mayes, people who knew him and the Bains have described him as unusually close to the family and the girls. He was described as a friend of Gary Bain, and the children considered him an uncle. He was often at the Bain home. Authorities said he was spending the night there before the mother and daughters disappeared so he could help the family to pack for a planned move to Tucson, Ariz., and then drive their belongings west. A Facebook page that Adam Mayes was using under an alias confirmed by law enforcement showed several photos of him and the Bain girls. One picture

Steak tickets can also be purchased on the day of the event. Proceeds earned from the steak dinner will go to fund the many children’s projects of the club. Each year the Civitan Club sponsors youth teams at the park, donates to the Lighthouse Foundation, gives to a men’s home and provides scholarships for high school graduates. The club also is partnered with Belk in the Belk’s Children Day that helps 10-12 underprivileged youngsters in Alcorn County during Christmas.

“The Children’s Day is a very touching day and just a little part of what we do, said Bugg, the club president. “We do many things and if something comes up, we are there to support it, added Wood. Those that purchase a ticket are eligible for the drawing of a barbecue set worth $100. An electric drill donated by a club member will also be raffled. “I think this is a good cause and something that we at Belk are happy to be involved with, said site manager Linda Hastings.

“We are excited to be able to have the steak sale at Belk because Linda is such a great asset in helping the Civitan Club with its projects, added Bugg. “There is nothing better than helping others in the community, especially children. Wood has plenty of steaks ready for Saturday. “We won’t run out, he said. “This is something that would make a great Mother’s Day gift. The steak sale and a children’s carnival — which will be next to Belk next week — are the club’s two biggest fundraisers.

Real unemployment is rising, not falling BY DICK MORRIS AND EILEEN MCGANN At last, Obama’s economic strategy becomes clear: Encourage Americans to stop even looking for work! In April, the number of Americans seeking work dropped by 522,000, part of a long term decline of 22 million in the number of adults seeking work. When Obama took office, 135 million American adults had jobs. Now, 139 million do. But when he became president, 70 million had dropped out of the labor force or were unemployed. Now, 100 million fall into these categories. University of Maryland economist Peter Morici writes that “Factoring in those discouraged adults and others working part time for lack of full time opportunities, the unemployment rate is about 14.5 percent. Adding college graduates in low skill positions, like counterwork at Starbucks, and the unemployment rate is likely closer to 18 percent.” So when Obama touts the drop in unemployment to 8.1 percent, he is being completely disingenuous. Real unemployment is rising, not falling. But the social consequences of these massive drop-offs in labor force participation are truly harrowing for our nation. The first thing the former communists of Eastern Europe did when they took power democratically after the rising of the Iron Curtain was to lower the retirement age -- to 50 in some places -to swell the ranks of those dependent on state pensions. Ever since, these seniors have been reliable votes for the left as they fret and worry about their always dwindling pensions. Obama has begun the transformation of America from a nation of hard-working, taxpaying people to one where only a minority work and a small minority pay almost all the taxes. This change presages the day when the tax eaters outvote the taxpayers and those who do not work outnumber those who do. (Already almost 50 percent pay no personal income taxes and the top 20 percent in income pay more than 85 percent of the income tax revenues). Some have recently called Obama the “divider in chief.” But his division of the United States by ethnicity, gender, age, and wealth is not as injurious to our national psyche as his political efforts to form a coalition of nonworkers and non-taxpayers to re-elect him. Obama’s recent ads hitting Romney for his support from the oil industry and its announced intention to spend $200 million beating Obama follows this same course. He attacks the tax breaks we give oil companies and Romney’s backing for them. But he does not suggest that taxing oil profits will either increase production or lower gas prices. Nor does he even suggest that the revenues are a step toward a balanced budget. Instead, his message is cloaked in envy and animosity. His manner and language suggest that taxing oil is a way of getting even for their “record profits.” In fact, any tax increase for oil companies decreases the amount available for exploration and new drilling and tends to increase the price of oil and cut supplies. If Obama can persuade enough people to drop out of the labor force and live quietly at home on diminished incomes, he might convince us that he has eradicated unemployment! (Dick Morris, former advisor to the Clinton administration, is a commentor and author of “Rewriting History.” He is also a columnist for the New York Post and The Hill. His wife, Eileen McGann is an attorney and consultant.)

Prayer for today Merciful God, thank you for loving us even though we don’t deserve it. Amen.

Legislature: New pattern in government evident STARKVILLE — Gov. Phil Bryant’s legislative agenda fared about as well in the 2012 regular session as the 1890 Mississippi Constitution would allow -- which is to say that the political stars have returned to their historic alignment after the eight-year anomalies of the two terms Haley Barbour served as governor. Barbour, the longtime national GOP political force of nature, enjoyed an outsized amount of power and influence during his two terms in office despite the fact that the 1890 constitution clearly created a “weak governor” system. Back in 1950, constitutional scholar William N. Etheridge Jr. wrote: “The governor is given the chief executive power and a mandate to faithfully enforce the laws. However, that obligation does not carry with it a corresponding grant of power.” Nearly a century later, Mississippi’s governor was granted the increased powers of gubernatorial succession and the authority to propose and executive budget. But on the whole, the 1890 constitution still vested the lion’s share of raw political power in the

Mississippi Legislature. Therefore, the legislative leadership since 1890 has wielded Sid Salter e n o r m o u s Columnist power. Barbour essentially turned that model on its head during his two terms in office. He implemented Washington-style party discipline particularly in the state Senate and used that discipline to manipulate state government into a model which pitted him and the Senate in many cases against the Democratcontrolled House. The strategy was simple. Barbour made support of his position a litmus test for Republicans. Republicans who failed to support Barbour found themselves ostracized to a degree within their own party. The threat of Barbour’s possible intervention in the legislative races of his fellow Republicans during the primaries was also a point of intimidation. At any rate, Barbour leveraged that set of circumstances into more power

than any modern governor in either part has been able to enjoy. But in the aftermath of the 2011 statewide elections, the rules of engagement changed. Bryant absolutely cruised to victory over his foes in the governor’s race from within his party and from outside the GOP. But Republicans also swept to power in both the House and the Senate, giving the GOP simultaneous control of the Senate, House and the Governor’s Mansion for the first time since Reconstruction. Despite Bryant’s considerable political skills and despite a resume of prior state legislative experience far superior to that which Barbour held when he was elected governor in 2003, Bryant simply has not enjoyed the leverage that Barbour held in dealing with the Legislature. That’s no knock on Bryant, it’s simply political reality. The dynamics of an allRepublican legislative power structure has returned the role of the governor to that which existed when the Democrats controlled the House, the Senate and the Governor’s Mansion.

In that era, the governor enjoyed less power and the stronger figures in state government were the lieutenant governor and the House speaker. Clearly, as indicated by the fate of the bond bill and the charter school issue, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves obviously grasps that power shift and has used it to the advantage of his agenda. To a lesser extent, the same has been true for House Speaker Philip Gunn. For the most part, Bryant has done an admirable job of choosing his battles as state government returns to the more traditional system in which there are institutional political tensions between the House and Senate and between the Legislature and the governor. For the Legislature, the Barbour administration was an interminable period of reduced legislative influence. What we saw in 2012 was the Legislature reasserting itself. Expect that trend to continue. ‘Must-see TV’ on finding your roots “Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr.” is another of the Harvard professor’s wonderful television series for PBS. This is “must-see TV” and a more than worthy sequel to three previous projects Gates has hosted about how some of us came to be what and who we are. In this latest 10-part series, Gates explores the genealogical and genetic history of a diverse group of people, from entertainer Harry Connick Jr. and Pastor Rick Warren to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Brown University President Ruth Simmons. There are less famous people, but the famous get you hooked for the rest. As I wrote about the earlier series, “African American Lives,” which traced the African and slave roots of celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey and Chris Rock, Gates eviscerates any excuse for racism when he explores the lineage of the African Americans he interviews. That’s because the whitest and blackest among us are actually a mix of genes formed out of a racial melting pot that includes ancestors who were both black and white.

It would be easy for Gates, whose political sympathies align with the DemoCal cratic left, to Thomas make these programs a Columnist partisan rant against historical and cultural injustice and the Republican Party. He avoids that temptation, letting the facts he and his team unearth speak for themselves. Gates has become a modern-day Ralph Edwards. Edwards hosted a TV show in the ‘50s called “This is Your Life.” On the show, childhood friends and longlost relatives would surprise a famous guest and regale the audience with funny and heart-warming stories from the celebrity’s past. On Gates’ program, those relatives are long dead. They are ghosts who have faded through generations of family history, leaving only stories handed down by word of mouth. One of the most poignant moments in the current series is when Condoleezza Rice learns about her great-grandmother, Julia Head. Through stories told

by her family, Rice learned that Head was the child of a slave and a white slave owner. After a search of courthouse records in Greene County, Ala., Gates discovers documents that reveal Julia Head was just four years old when she was sold for $450. Shown the record of the sale, Rice soberly responds, “My great-grandmother was worth $450 to Mr. Head. Yeah, dehumanization. Just property.” Conservatives should love this series because it shows that despite incredible odds that argued against success, the subjects Gates profiles overcame overwhelming obstacles to achieve something significant. Long before the birth of our entitlement generation, we held these kinds of role models up to young people. The message was, “If they could overcome, so can you.” That’s what Rice’s parents believed. On “Finding Your Roots,” Rice said her parents told her that even though she might not have been able to drink a soda at the local Woolworths segregated lunch counter in 1963, she could be president of the United States if she wished.

She came close. In an age when we change homes and jobs many times during our lifetimes and families are broken up because of divorce and other factors, finding one’s roots is an important component to filling in ones family tree. Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I headed? These are all fundamental questions to which every human being, regardless of race, gender or background, wants answers. Professor Gates provides these answers to the people he profiles, but his programs also encourage viewers to explore their own family histories so they can know more about themselves. If you missed “Finding Your Roots” or any of Gates’ other series, check your local PBS listings for rebroadcast dates or buy the DVD at www.pbs.org/wnet/ finding-your-roots. Your purchase will be worth the investment. This is some of the best television you’ll ever see. It is also something rare for television today: a program that helps you truly appreciate the value of your own life. (Readers may e-mail Cal Thomas at tmseditors@tribune.com. )

CONVERSION The word “conversion” is found one time in the new testament in Acts 15:3 referring to the conversion of the Gentiles. However, a number of conversions are revealed in the new testament. The change of attitude that takes place in conversion will bring a person into the right relationship with God. Conversion involves turning away from evil deeds and false worship and turning toward serving and worshiping the Lord. It marks a person’s entrance into a new relationship with God and forgiveness of sins. It is also referred to as the new birth or being born of water and the Spirit. The heart is changed by faith. “And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith” (Acts 15:9). The life is changed by repentance. “But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work today in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went” (Matt 21:28-29). The relationship is changed by baptism. “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Gal 3:27). Notice what brings about conversion. Faith is produced by the word of God. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom 10:17). All sinners should be willing to repent. “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent” (Acts 17:30). Sinners must also confess Christ. “And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God” (Acts 8:37). Sins are washed away by the blood of Christ when one is baptized. “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16). Only those who have obeyed God’s plan for saving sinners can be saved from sin and added to the Lord’s church. Christians have hope in this life and the life to come.

Man changes name to Tyrannosaurus Rex YORK, Neb. (AP) — A 23-year-old southeast Nebraska man has legally become Tyrannosaurus Rex. The York News-Times reports that the man entered the York County courtroom this week as Tyler Gold and left it with the moniker Ty-

rannosaurus Rex Joseph Gold. Gold says in his public filing for the change that the dinosaur’s name is cooler. He says that “as an entrepreneur, name recognition is important and the new name is more recogniz-

able.” The newspaper report does not describe his line of business. Judge Alan Gless asked Gold at Monday’s hearing whether he wanted a new name so he could hide from creditors or law enforcement. Gold said no.

Women, blacks, help Obama in poll WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama’s popularity among women, minorities and independents is giving him an early edge over his likely GOP rival, Mitt Romney, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. The Democratic president also earns strong marks on empathy, sincerity, likeability and social issues. But Americans are split over which candidate can best handle the economy, which might open pathways for Romney six months before the November election. Half of registered voters say they would back Obama in November, while 42 percent favor Romney, the AP-GfK poll found. About a quarter of voters indicated they are persuadable, meaning they are undecided or could change their minds before Election Day. Forty-one percent of voters say they are certain to vote for Obama, and 32 percent say they are locked in for Romney. The nationwide poll of 1,004 adults comes as Romney is focusing heavily on fundraising after gaining endorsements from of all but one of his GOP rivals, and conservative voters are reminding politicians of their muscle. Republicans in Indiana on Tuesday ousted a six-term senator accused of being too friendly to Obama, and North Carolina voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. On Wednesday, however, Obama endorsed gay marriage, a sign that he is eager to fire up young and liberal voters even if it costs him some support in battleground states such as North Car-

olina, which he narrowly won in 2008. In the AP-GfK poll, Americans give Obama an edge over Romney on numerous attributes, but handling the economy is a key exception. The public is divided over whether Obama or Romney would do a better job on the issue that strategists say will dominate the fall election. Forty-six percent prefer Obama on this topic, and 44 percent prefer Romney.

Postal Service: Will keep rural offices open WASHINGTON (AP) — Bending to strong public opposition, the nearly bankrupt U.S. Postal Service on Wednesday backed off a plan to close thousands of rural post offices after May 15 and proposed keeping them open, but with shorter operating hours. The move to halt the shuttering of 3,700 lowrevenue post offices followed months of dissent from rural states and their lawmakers, who said the cost-cutting would hurt their communities the most. In recent weeks, rising opposition had led Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe to visit some rural areas in a bid to ease fears about cuts that could slow delivery of prescription drugs, newspapers and other services. In an election year, the angst over postal closings also extended to nearly half the senators, who in letters last week urged Donahoe to postpone closing any mail facility until Congress approves final postal overhaul legislation. The Senate last month passed a bill that would halt many of the closings; the House remains stalled over a separate bill allowing for aggressive cuts.

“I could live with this plan, and I think the majority of people could,” said June Nygren, who runs the Jersey Lilly Saloon & Eatery in the tiny Montana town of Ingomar. Donahoe visited the rural town of about 80 people last month, which welcomed him with a spread of homemade baked goods and a packed school gymnasium as people pleaded for their post office to stay open. “I felt he really paid attention, and apparently he did,” Nygren said. At a news briefing, Donahoe said he hoped the latest plan will help allay much of rural America’s concern about postal cutbacks. He prodded Congress to act quickly on legislation that will allow the agency to move ahead with its broader multi-billion dollar costcutting effort and return to profitability by 2015.

Plot shows need for surveillance power WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI Director Robert Mueller urged Congress on Wednesday to renew wide-ranging surveillance authority to thwart terrorism plots like the latest one in which an al-Qaidaengineered explosive device was to have been detonated on a U.S.bound airline flight. Mueller told the House Judiciary Committee the FBI is examining the device and said the scheme hatched in Yemen demonstrates that it’s essential for Congress to reauthorize counterterrorism tools enacted in 2008. Some of these programs expire at year-end. The provisions allow the government to target electronic surveillance on foreign persons reasonably believed to be outside the United States.

When it comes to jobless benefit claims, April has been a mixed bag. The number of people seeking U.S. unemployment benefits climbed steadily for much of the month, then sank two weeks ago by the largest amount in nearly a year. Don’t look for a similar drop for the first week of May. Economists are anticipating jobless claims data out today will show applications bounced back up last week.

If preliminary retail sales figures are any indication, Nordstrom had a solid first quarter. The high-end department store chain estimated last week that total sales for the quarter jumped 13.7 percent from a year earlier. Nordstrom’s also is expected to show a higher profit when it reports first-quarter results today. Wall Street will look beyond Nordstrom’s numbers for insight into whether the European financial crisis is dampening the retailer’s tourist business.

CHICAGO — Paul Maholm’s rocky start with the Chicago Cubs is all but forgotten. After giving up 12 runs and 12 hits over eight innings in his first two outings, Maholm has more than settled down. He has become one of the team’s best pitchers. Maholm pitched seven strong innings Wednesday, combining with two relievers on a four-hit shutout as the Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves 1-0. Backed by some good defense and an RBI single from Bryan LaHair in the seventh, Maholm outpitched Tim Hudson and earned his fourth straight win.

“I think for four games I’ve pitched well,” Maholm said. “I’m going to have another rough outing at some point, it’s part of baseball. But I’m going to ride this as long as I possibly can and hopefully for a good while.” Maholm (4-2) allowed three hits and combined with James Russell and Rafael Dolis to blank the Braves in a game that took only two hours and five minutes to play. Maholm walked three and struck out three as Chicago took two of three from Atlanta after doing the same in the previous series against the Dodgers. “After probably his second start, he’s been as good as anybody,” Chicago manager Dale Sveum said of Maholm,

signed as a free agent after seven seasons with the Pirates. “We knew what we were getting, we were getting a guy who throws strikes, can throw four pitches, can manipulate the ball, he’s a good athlete. He’s done a great job.” After Maholm came out to warm up for the eighth, Russell replaced him and gave up a two-out double to Martin Prado and a walk to Freddie Freeman, then retired Dan Uggla on a flyout. Dolis worked the ninth for his third save in four chances. Hudson (1-1) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings in his third start this season. He gave up only three hits through the first six innings and — thanks to a pair

of double plays — faced the minimum 18 batters. “It’s disappointing. I felt like we played a pretty good game. Obviously they had a guy over there who was throwing the ball pretty well, too,” Hudson said. “He made some pitches. They had some breaks with some of their defensive alignments with some guys on base. The ball was bouncing their way. Not a whole lot else you can say about it.” David DeJesus hit a leadoff single in the seventh, and Tony Campana bunted him to second and he reached third on Starlin Castro’s grounder to first. LaHair then hit a hard Please see BRAVES | 9

Votto helps Reds beat Brewers 2-1 BY CHRIS JENKINS Associated Press

MILWAUKEE — Johnny Cueto showed he could hold his own in a duel with one of baseball’s toughest pitchers at home, Zack Greinke. Joey Votto and the Cincinnati Reds then found a way to give Dusty Baker a milestone victory. Votto’s RBI double off John Axford broke a scoreless tie in the ninth, and the Reds edged the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Wednesday. “Zack is always a handful,” Votto said. “John Axford is a very good pitcher in his own

right, and then we stole one from him. I don’t want to use the word surprising, but it’s great whenever you can sneak out a win against those two pitchers.” The Reds won two of three against the struggling Brewers, leaving Baker with 1,500 victories as a major league manager. “Every time you win something, it means something,” Baker said. “They came and told me that I won my 1,400th here. Now my 1,500th here. Who knows? Maybe I’ll win my 2,000th here. If I’m around that long.”

Drew Stubbs singled off Axford with two outs, and Votto lined a ball over the glove of second baseman Rickie Weeks to score Stubbs from first. “Drew always has a chance to score,” Votto said. “He’s such a good runner. He’s probably one of the game’s best runners.” Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said he didn’t have a clear view of the play as it developed, but he wasn’t happy with the result. “I don’t think a guy should be able to score from first base,” Roenicke said.

Brandon Phillips then hit a bloop single, driving in Votto for a 2-0 lead. Ryan Braun connected against Sean Marshall in the bottom of the ninth, trimming the Reds’ lead to one with his 10th homer. Marshall nearly gave up another homer on a long fly ball by Corey Hart that was caught at the wall in center, then allowed a pair of two-out singles to Jonathan Lucroy and Norichika Aoki. Rondo, Celtics look to close out Hawks BY JIMMY GOLEN Associated Press

BOSTON — John Havlicek against the 76ers. Larry Bird against the Pistons. When Rajon Rondo intercepted a Hawks pass in the final seconds of Game 5, he had a chance to add to the list of memorable Celtics playoff steals. Then he fumbled it away. “I hate that the game ended the way that it ended,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said after

Atlanta held on for an 87-86 victory in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series to force a sixth game in Boston on Thursday night. “I thought that Rondo willed us back into the game. He really did.” Rondo already had 13 points and 12 assists when he grabbed his fifth steal of the game, intercepting an inbounds pass from Al Horford to Josh Smith with 10.9 seconds left and Atlanta leading by one. Boston had no timeouts left, so Rondo moved up

the court along the left side, where Horford trapped him. Kevin Garnett stepped back to receive the pass, but Rondo lost control of the ball and Smith tipped it away as the buzzer sounded. “My heart was racing a hundred miles an hour on the last sequence,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said. “We didn’t make a smart play inbounding the ball, but I’m glad (Smith) had the presence of mind on the last play to step up on Rondo when he came

flying up the court.” The Celtics have a record 17 NBA titles and a lot of history over the years, and steals are prominent among their most memorable plays. Johnny Most’s call of “Havlicek stole the ball!” in the 1965 Eastern Conference finals against Philadelphia is one of the most famous in sports history, and Bird’s steal against Isiah Thomas to beat Detroit Please see RONDO | 9

Jeremy Lin not willing to risk any kind of knee injury BY TIM REYNOLDS Associated Press

MIAMI — Jeremy Lin knows he would have been rusty and probably not in great shape if he tried to play for the New York Knicks in this playoff series against the Miami Heat. He could handle those things. What he couldn’t handle was the unknown, that being how much his surgically repaired left

knee could handle if he tried to play too soon. So with the Knicks already having lost guards Baron Davis and Iman Shumpert to serious knee injuries already in this series — there’s little chance Davis will play at all next season, and Shumpert’s availability for the start of next season would be considered highly doubtful at best — Lin is erring on the side of

caution by not rushing a comeback against the Heat, a move that neither risks his knee or his earning potential this summer as a restricted free agent. “I’m mostly worried about just not having to suffer a real setback, which would be a new knee injury,” Lin said Wednesday morning in Miami, where the Knicks were preparing for a win-or-else Game 5 of their East-

ern Conference first-round series against the Heat. The Knicks ended all questions about Lin’s status on Tuesday, when interim coach Mike Woodson said that the guard who exploded onto the NBA scene with a dazzling series of games in February will not play against the Heat, regardless of how long the series would last. Lin has been trying to speed

his recovery for a couple weeks, working out several times in Miami around Games 1 and 2, then trying to go through a full-speed workout earlier this week in New York. That one didn’t go well, with Lin — who thought there was a chance he could possibly play against Miami — saying afterward he felt pain and soreness Please see LIN | 9

grounder under shortstop Jack Wilson’s glove to give the Cubs the lead. Prado doubled and reached third in the sixth and after Uggla walked with two outs, Chipper Jones lined out to second baseman Darwin Barney, who was positioned behind the bag at second in a defensive shift. Otherwise, it would have been a run-scoring single. “Chipper almost hit me in the forehead and Barney caught it,” Maholm said. “It’s scary and then it’s very good.” The defensive shifts are something Sveum favors, saying that third base coach Pat Listach studies all the opposing hitters and their tendencies, allowing the Cubs to move defenders around by playing the percentages on which direction the ball likely will go when it comes off the bat. “The shift won them the game today,” said Jones. “You live with it, you’re gonna die by it. It’s just unfortunate today we couldn’t really get anything going, and when we did, we hit a bullet right at somebody.”

in the knee. “There was nothing to set it back,” Lin said. “I think to get from 85 percent to 100 percent takes more time than I may have thought.” Lin’s story was quite probably the NBA’s most unexpected all season. He scored a total of 32 points in New York’s first 22 games, not getting any time in 13 of those and logging more than seven minutes only once. His first breakout moment came Feb. 4 at Madison Square Garden, coming off the bench to score 25 points in 36 minutes. Lin started New York’s next 25 games after that, scoring 161 points in his first six starts including a 38-point effort — topping Kobe Bryant’s output that night by four — in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers, then hitting the game-winning 3-pointer on the Knicks’ final shot as they rallied past Toronto 90-87 on Feb. 14. Linsanity was all the rage, though it quieted down considerably after the Heat held him to a 1-for-11, eight-point night in the final game for both teams before the All-Star break.

place Marshall with Logan Ondrusek. “Aoki blooped one in there and at that point and time, I figured that was enough,” Baker said. “You hate to take your closer out, but we needed that ballgame.” Ondrusek walked George Kottaras to load the bases but got Travis Ishikawa to pop out, earning his first save. “As a manager, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do,” Baker said. “No, I had no reservations about that.” Axford (0-2) took the loss.

“I made a good pitch to Votto, but he put a better swing on it, got his hands in there and it was literally like an inch away from Rickie catching it,” Axford said. “The ball after that, it was just kind of, throw the bat out there and hope you make contact and it dropped in. It’s just the way baseball goes sometimes.” The ninth-inning offense came after impressive outings from Greinke and Cueto. Greinke pitched eight dominant innings before being lifted for a pinch hitter. He gave up two hits with no walks and had a

season-high 11 strikeouts — his 15th career doubledigit strikeout game. Coming into Wednesday’s game, Greinke was 13-0 in 18 starts with the Brewers at Miller Park — making him the sixth player since 1900 to win each of his first 13 home decisions with a team. With Wednesday’s loss, the Brewers are now 18-1 in home starts by Greinke. Cueto pitched seven innings before Aroldis Chapman (3-0) came in for the eighth. Cueto gave up five hits, struck out five and walked one. Cueto came into Wednesday’s game on an early hot streak, having

given up only six earned runs in six outings this year. He was coming off of a complete-game victory at Pittsburgh. “He’s probably the most underappreciated pitcher, since he’s been healthy last year,” Greinke said of Cueto. “His numbers are pretty insane. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone talking about him being one of the better pitchers in the league. Maybe it’s time to start that.” Cueto got out of trouble after the Brewers loaded the bases with two out in the third on a single by Nyjer Morgan, a walk to Weeks and an infield hit by Braun. Aramis

during the 1987 playoffs was just as impressive. Rondo’s steal had the potential to be remembered just as fondly, especially after he took control of the game during a 10-0 run that cut as 12-point deficit to a single basket at the end of the third quarter. Instead, it all went for naught. “I cornered myself,” Rondo said. “Give Al credit. I just didn’t come up with the shot.” Although Rondo’s outside shooting has always been the weakest part of his game — he was 6-for-17 from the floor on Tuesday — he made 8 of 11 shots in Game 4 and Horford considered him

dangerous. “I didn’t want to lose the series in that way, with him hitting a jumper over me or something like that,” Horford said. “So you’re fighting for your life out there. My thing was to force him to pass the ball, to bottle him up the best I could and then Josh made a great deflection.” Rivers, a former point guard himself, said he thought Rondo should have gone up the middle of the court instead of the sideline. And he wanted Rondo to drive toward the hoop, instead of setting up on the perimeter. “I was hoping he would attack the basket, but he lost control of the ball and that blew up any chance that we had,” Rivers said.

“We didn’t capitalize on the situation.” The Celtics will have another chance on Thursday night, and this time they can close the Hawks out

Votto Effect We often hear baseball pundits talk about the value of hitters being surrounded by other feared hitters in the lineup. It’s easy to see the impact of not having protection behind hitters in the lineup. We learned the importance of that nearly a decade ago watching Barry Bonds walk 232 times in 2004, with 120 of those intentional. But what about the table-setters hitting in front of the big guns? A clear example is happening right before our eyes in Cincinnati. Shortstop Zack Cozart is hitting.196 batting leadoff and .354 batting No. 2. Similarly, when center fielder Drew Stubbs bats leadoff, he’s a paltry .107. But put him second in the order and his average jumps to .373. Stubbs also struggles in the seventh spot at .182. That is what you call the Joey Votto Effect. Votto is the Reds’ No. 3 hitter, and this helps explain why Cincinnati has committed more than $200 million to their first baseman.

The Orioles’ Flying Start

Kyle Seager, Seattle The Seattle Mariners didn’t muster much offense last week, but Seager played a huge role in what scoring the M’s were able to produce. The third sacker drove in 10 of Seattle’s 24 runs and scored three others.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Weaver made just one start last week, but it was a dandy. He no-hit the Minnesota Twins, allowing just one walk in the dominating performance. Weaver is now 4-0 on the season.

Chipper Jones, Atlanta The veteran third baseman made just four starts last week, but he chipped in with three hits in each of his last three games. His threegame barrage began with a walkoff home run to defeat the Phillies in a wild 15-13 win. He homered against the Rockies to break a 6-6 tie, then drove home five runs in the next game.

James McDonald, Pittsburgh The Pirates are still struggling to score runs, and McDonald gave the team a huge lift last week with two wins over the Braves and Reds. He lowered his ERA to 2.70, but those are his only two wins of the season. In 14 innings, he allowed 17 base runners and struck out 17.

Nick Castellanos, Detroit Drafted in the first round out of Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, Fla., in 2010, the rising star has been on the fast track to the majors. He played shortstop in high school, but was immediately moved to third base by the Tigers. After playing a full season at low-A West Michigan in 2010 where he drove in 76 runs with 36 doubles and hit .312 in 135 games, he was promoted to high-A this season. His progress has not slowed at all. In his first 28 games at Lakeland, he’s hitting .414 with two homers, 21 RBIs, 10 doubles and 16 runs. The Tigers are counting on him to be the third baseman of the future, which could come as early as 2013.

May 11, 1972 The San Francisco Giants traded Hall of Famer Willie Mays to the Mets for pitcher Charlie Williams and $50,000. Another Hall of Famer was dealt 18 years later. The Yankees sent Dave Winfield to the California Angels for pitcher Mike Witt.

May 9, 1984 The great Tom Seaver, pitching for the Chicago White Sox at age 39, earned two wins in one day. The White Sox and Brewers completed a 25-inning marathon suspended from the night before, and Seaver pitched the final inning to earn the win. He threw 8.1 innings in the regularly scheduled game in Chicago’s 5-4 win.

Matt Wieters

Tampa Bay at Baltimore Tampa Bay and Baltimore finished the weekend with the two best records in the American League with the Orioles a half game better. This is their first meeting this season and a chance for the Orioles to prove they belong in the race. Two of the game’s brightest young pitchers will face off on Saturday: Matt Moore of the Rays and Brian Matusz of Baltimore. Both are struggling with losing records this season.

Los Angeles Angels at Texas The AL West rivals were supposed to stage a battle royale for the division crown this season. So far, the Angels haven’t held up their end of the bargain. No doubt the marquee matchup this weekend will be on Friday. Japanese rookie Yu Darvish of Texas will oppose C.J. Wilson, formerly of Texas, facing his old teammates for the first time since signing with the Angels. On Sunday, Jered Weaver, who recently tossed a no-hitter, will face Neftali Feliz, the former Texas closer.

Atlanta at St. Louis The Braves and Cardinals battled down the stretch last season as the Redbirds overcame a 10.5-game deficit in the wild card hunt to overtake the Braves on the final day of the season. This will be the first time the teams have met since the Cardinals swept the Braves last Sept. 9-11. The Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright will attempt to even his record against his former organization on Saturday.

There. Mo obviously does not want his career to end this way. But how else could we expect Rivera’s career to end? We don’t expect him to lose the effectiveness of his cutter. It doesn’t appear that he will ever wear out by pitching. So how else

with his devastating cutter. But maybe he is too old to shag flies during BP. But Rivera resolves to come back and has no regrets. “If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen doing something I love to do,” explains Rivera. “And shagging I love to do. I’d do the same thing, without hesitation. The reasons why it happen, you have to take it as it is. You know, just have to fight.” His illustrious Hall-of-Fame career began inconspicuously enough. There was no fanfare like we’ve seen recently with Winning Pitcher Bryce Harper or Andy Pettitte Orlando Hernandez Stephen Strasburg. None of Sterling Hitchcock that, “he’ll be Javier Vazquez the next Jaret Wright whomever.” Chien-Ming Wang Very quietly, A.J. Burnett on May 23, Hiroki Kuroda 1995, Rivera took the mound as the starting pitcher — that’s right — starting pitcher for the Yankees at Anaheim against the Angels’ Chuck Finley. His manager was Buck Showalter and his catcher was Mike Stanley, the Yankees’ cleanup hitter that day. Rivera didn’t last long. He struck out Tony Philips swinging, then caught

Boston’s Adrian Gonzalez suffered through an 0-fer day against Baltimore in the Red Sox’ 9-6 loss in 17 innings. The first baseman struck out in the 17th representing the tying run against the Orioles’ Chris Davis, who began the day simply as the DH and ended it with a win. Gonzalez was the first AL cleanup hitter to go 0-8 since Andre Thornton of the Indians in 1984. The last time (before Sunday) that a position player picked up a win on the mound in the majors. Rocky Colavito of the last-place Yankees won a game in relief of Steve Barber against the first-place Tigers. The five AL Central teams are a combined 21 games below .500 at home. They are two games over .500 on the road. So much for playing for home-field advantage in the playoffs.

Since Mariano Rivera became the Yankees’ full-time closer in 1997, there have been 31 pitchers credited with saves for the Yankees. Can you name the three pitchers besides Rivera with at least 10 saves for the Yankees during that time?

Home runs from pitchers in April. It marks the first season since 1994 that no pitcher has gone deep in April. So, maybe Albert Pujols shouldn’t feel so bad. Mariano Rivera’s age, uniform number and record number of postseason saves. TRIVIA ANSWER: Ramiro Mendoza had 16, Mike Stanton 13 and Steve Karsay 12.

The Orioles are out of the gate at a divisionwinning clip, capturing 19 of their first 28 games. That puts the O’s on pace to win 110 games, a mark that hasn’t been reached in the AL East since the Yankees won 114 in 1998. But hold your horses there Baltimore fans. The Orioles have done this before. In 2005 to be exact. That year the Birds were 19-9 and improved to 26-13 with a 3.5-game lead in late May. But by the end of June, they were out of first place and manager Lee Mazzilli was fired after a loss on Aug. 3 in Anaheim — their 16th setback in 18 games — leaving the mess with Sam Perlozzo. The team finished 74-88 and in fourth place, 21 games behind the Red Sox and Yankees.

Dodgers Lost seven of last 13. Rangers Lost five of seven and headed to Baltimore. Rays Rays-Orioles suddenly a huge series this weekend. Braves Freddie Freeman getting it done with bat and glove. Cardinals +62 run differential is best in baseball. Yankees Still in shock over losing Mariano Rivera. Nationals Nattitude alive and well in DC. Orioles Took five of six in New York and Boston. Blue Jays Need to gain ground at Oakland and Minnesota this week. Indians Won four of five with only loss in extra innings to Texas. Tigers Vaunted offense managed just 12 runs over last four games. Reds Mired within two games of .500 for past two weeks. DiamondbacksNeed Paul Goldschmidt to unleash his power. Phillies Starting pitching will be good enough to keep them in hunt. Giants Leading run-producer Pablo Sandoval out for at least a month. Mets Frank Francisco has won or saved last four games. Marlins Giancarlo Stanton is beginning to heat up. Brewers Ryan Braun enjoyed three-homer day at San Diego. A’s Getting outhit and outscored, but still better than .500. Angels Pujols breaks through with homer, but hitting below .200. Mariners Kyle Seager providing most of the offense. Rockies Swept by Atlanta as three different pitchers got saves. Astros Jose Altuve should be NL All-Star second baseman. Red Sox Baltimore’s DH Chris Davis shut down hitters for two frames. White Sox Adam Dunn leads team with 23 RBIs. Pirates Batting .228 and averaging 2.8 runs per game. Cubs Cards’ Lance Lynn ended both of Cubs’ two-game win streaks. Royals Haven’t lost a series in two weeks. Padres Only National League team with single-digit wins. Twins Have won back-to-back games only once this season.

Save in the minor leagues by Rivera prior to notching 608 in the major leagues. AP Images

Son deserves dressing-down for opening drawers DEAR ABBY: My husband’s son -- I’ll call him Duncan -- came to visit with his family. He lived with us for about six months on and off when he was younger. During that time, he twice went through my dresser drawers without my permission. The first time, we discovered a photo of me in a negligee he had found and hidden. The second time, he said he had been looking for a key. I was furious and felt violated. During his recent visit, it happened a third time. I discovered my underwear drawer was slightly ajar and knew Duncan had used the bathroom in our bedroom. When I told my husband, he asked

me not to let it ruin the rest of their visit. I felt violated again! Abigail After Van Buren D u n c a n and his Dear Abby family left, I asked my husband if this upset him, too, and his reply was that he was upset that I let it bother me. I understand that Duncan is his only son, but I’m hurt that he’s taking Duncan’s side. — NERVOUS IN NEVADA DEAR NERVOUS: It does appear that Duncan has an unhealthy fixation on your underwear drawer, or he may be a

cross-dresser. Because your husband refuses to discuss this with his son, the next time Duncan announces that he’s coming for a visit, offer to buy him lingerie in his size, or install a sturdy lock on your bedroom door. DEAR ABBY: I have been having an affair with “Ginger for several years. She’s married and has three kids. Ginger told me she and her husband had stopped being intimate just before we started our relationship. Her husband caught on about a year ago. By this time Ginger and I had developed deep feelings for each other, but we agreed to stop because he had given her an ultimatum —

break it off or get out. We stopped seeing each other for a few weeks, then she called saying she had been pregnant but had gotten an abortion, and we started up again. This time we had to carefully plan our limited time together. We continued our relationship for another eight months before it finally ended. What I’m having a problem with is Ginger ended it with no phone call — nothing. I haven’t heard from her in more than a month, and she won’t return my calls or texts. Don’t you think I deserved a better goodbye? — SITTING BY THE PHONE IN OHIO DEAR SITTING BY THE PHONE: Not really.

While closure might have made this less frustrating for you, Ginger tried to say goodbye to you before and it didn’t work. What probably happened is her husband found out the affair was ongoing and is monitoring her closely. You’ll feel better once you accept that Ginger has chosen him and the kids and moved on. DEAR ABBY: My wife and I like to entertain in our home, and sometimes we offer self-service mixed nuts. What do you think of a guest who hovers over the bowl and picks out all the pecans and macadamias, leaving behind the peanuts and the almonds? Is she being rude? — TOM R. IN

NORTH CAROLINA DEAR TOM R.: Sure it’s rude. It’s also greedy and inconsiderate of the other guests who also may be partial to pecans and macadamias. However, because you know that this person has a weakness for two particular kinds of nuts, why not offer her a small bowl of her own containing only the nuts of her choice? When you do, smile and say “... nuts to you. (Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Your focus has been so narrow and laser sharp that you can’t help but be effective. TAURUS (April 20May 20). There’s something good about being uncomfortable with your situation. Being too comfortable is disempowering. Go deeper into your agitation. Let it move you to make a difference. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Money is important, and you can improve the world with it, so try not to make judgments that distance you from wealth. Remember that money funds the good things in life like schools, hospitals and libraries. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You’ll not only notice

what you feel, but you’ll notice where you feel it in your body. This information helps you make choices that are healthy and puts you in contact with your deeper intuition. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Whether you are strapped for cash or just realize that creativity trumps pricey dining and entertainment, you’ll find that you have excellent ideas about how to whip up some inexpensive fun today. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You may have trouble staying on track, especially since the new interests you are delving into are so compelling. Maybe this distraction is actually healthy for you. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Anyone can crush on someone new or distant. If you can develop a crush on someone you’re

already in a committed relationship with, that’s when real magic happens. SCORPIO (Oct. 24Nov. 21). You’ll love the people you meet over the course of the next six days. People with unexpected gifts will be drawn to you. Be friendly, open and careful not to prejudge anyone. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Doing things in a timely manner is important to you. To let a birthday, social courtesy or deadline zoom by causes you a measure of distress. Take precautions so this won’t happen. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19). You might be surprised by how rattled you can get in normal grownup situations. It’s as though there is a little child inside you experiencing the feelings. Just know that your vulner-

ability is what connects and endears you to others. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20Feb. 18). Reciprocal affections are convenient, but love is seldom so balanced. You’re not sure how you feel about someone, although you may easily and correctly assess how this person feels about you. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Names have power. There’s something you’ve been experiencing as a vague cloud of emotion. If you can put a name on your feelings, you can release them and transform your energy. TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (May 10). It has felt like your domestic and professional lives are at odds, but this tension is healed as a complementary energy takes hold.
