The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors awarded a contract Thursday morning for the Manpower Road and South Harper Road improvements project for the new Caterpillar facility.
The board accepted the low bid of $486,482.51 submitted by TLSL of Walnut. Six contractors submitted bids. The project could begin within a few weeks, and the contract allows 90 calendar days to complete the job. Intersections on Manpower Road will
be widened, and an acceleration lane will be added parallel to Harper so that trucks exiting the facility can merge into the traffic as they head toward U.S. 45. County engineer Kent Geno of Cook Coggin said the bids were favorable, with several be-

Alcorn County's innovative programs in agriculture and forestry will be on display Monday. The Alliance 2012 Agriculture & Forestry Tour is scheduled for 2 p.m. The annual awards banquet will follow at 6 p.m. at the Mississippi State Extension Service. “We like to showcase our

The Crossroads Arena may soon have an addition to its multi-purpose facility. Discussion about an ATM machine continued for a second straight meeting by the board on Wednesday. “I don’t think it will be an insurance issue, but I would like to know,” said board attorney William “Bill” Odom. The board agreed to wait on
an insurance response before preceding with the project. According to board member Joe Franks, the installation could be done by a company or by the arena staff. Some intellectually gifted students at Kossuth Elementary are ready to cast a ballot. The students will get their chance to vote their conscience in a mock presidential election between President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney on Oct.29. The mock election is part of the Promote to Vote education
project sponsored by the Mississippi Secretary of State's Office. “Lots of them have been really into this,” said gifted teacher Sandy Blackard. “They have listened to their parents and have grasped what a pivotal time we are in today … you can tell it's important to them.” Jeremy Martin, North Mississippi Service Coordinator with the Secretary of State's
