Helping employers match applicants to jobs that are right for them is at the heart of a unique program offered by the Northeast Mississippi Community College Division of Workforce

Training and Economic Development. Job PASS (Physical Assessment Skills Simulation) is a comprehensive screening tool for employers to help them determine how a potential employee’s strengths and abili-

ties fit with the position they’re seeking to fill. “What we want to do is give the employer a way to match the right people to the right job,” explained Greg James with the division. The assessment is typically

used early in the hiring process to give those making hiring decisions a concrete, objective look at a potential candidate’s strengths and weaknesses, explained James. Often employers will have candidates take the test as soon as they apply

‘Baby Jane Doe’ turns 18 Corinth police Adoptive mother shares success story BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

A desperate decision made under the guise of night lead one Corinth woman to her greatest joy. Eighteen years ago, she became the reluctant mother of an abandoned newborn and has never since regretted the decision. “Baby Jane Doe” is now a high school graduate and is about to enter college. This is their story. An Alcorn 911 dispatcher received a shocking phone call at 4:25 a.m. on July 11, 1996. The female caller informed the dispatcher a baby was in need of medical assistance at Dr. Patrick Hsu’s office. The anonymous caller was not believed to be the infant’s mother. The unidentified newborn later named “Baby Jane Doe” was discovered by Magnolia EMS workers on a warm summer night, wrapped in a large beach towel. A toddler t-shirt and an over-sized diaper hung loosely on her small frame. “She wasn’t fussy and appeared to be content, wiped down and well fed,” said Sara Gibbs, a registered nurse who was working in the nursery at Magnolia Regional Health Center when she was instructed by her house supervisor, Ma-

Friday’s Fourth of July Jacinto Festival gave the public the first chance to hear comments from all three Corinth police chief candidates. With current Police Chief David Lancaster planning to retire from the police department at the end of the year, the race for Chief of Police has so far proved to be a heated one. Candidates Fred Gooch, Ralph Dance and Ben Gann graced the stage at Jacinto to address the public on ways they can improve the city’s police department. Gooch, who currently serves as K-9 officer and juvenile officer, spoke for the first time in front of the historic Jacinto Courthouse. “I am not a politician. I am a police officer and police is what I want to do,” said Gooch. “One of the biggest problems I see right now is our lack of officers in the school system. The children are the future of this city and should be protected.” Gooch also believes citizens should know the police officers who serves the public. “If the citizens of Corinth know the police officers by name, it will improve the trust in the department and that is very important,” Gooch added. Current Detective Captain Ralph Dance shared with the crowd he has investigated over 500 cases, including murders and burglaries during his 24 years at the local police

BY ZACK STEEN For the hungry competitors on the Major League Eating circuit, it was all about downing Nathan’s Hot Dogs on the Fourth of July in New York City. One week later on July 12, those same competitors will be in Corinth vying for over $3,000 in cash prizes at the 3rd Annual World Slugburger Eating Championship. Corinth Main Street Director Taylor Coombs was invited to the MLE Nathan’s World Famous Hog Dog Eating Contest to watch the competition

and hand out info on the 27th Annual Slugburger Festival. “This has been the greatest experience. Nathan’s definitely knows how to put on a show,” said Coombs, via phone from the Big Apple on Saturday. “Sam Barclay, who will emcee our event and emceed the Nathan’s event, really showed us great hospitality.” Coombs made her way around New York City wearing her lime green Slugburger Festival tee shirt. “I had a ton of people asking about the Slugburger Festival,” the director said. “I was also able to talk to several news

media about next weekend’s Slugburger Eating Contest.” On Friday morning, Coombs attended the filming of NBC’s The Today Show where she held a handmade sign that said, “Slugburger Festival: Joey Chestnut’s next stop.” Known as “Jaws” on the competitive eating circuit, Chestnut packed away 61 hot dogs on Friday to capture his eighth consecutive Nathan’s title.
