Vehicle rams into Michie Pharmacy BY JEFF YORK For the Daily Corinthian

MICHIE, Tenn. — An early morning entry into Michie Pharmacy left an estimated $20,000 in damage to the pharmacy. A vehicle crashed into the front of the drug store around 3:30 a.m. Thursday and caused a great amount of damage to the store. Michie Pharmacy owner John Odom said he was notified in the wee hours of Thursday morning that someone had driven their vehicle into the pharmacy at 5823 Hwy. 22 S. in downtown Michie. “The alarm company called me around 3:30 a.m. and when I got on site the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department was already here,” said Odom. “They smashed into the store with the back of their vehicle.” Odom said the culprits hit the store so hard the front counter was pushed back into the pharmacy part of the store. The crash left bricks, medicine bottles and pieces of the vehi-

“They have tried to break into the store in the past in differ-

ent ways, but nothing ever like this one,” Odom commented. “I

was not prepared for what I saw when I got here to the store.” The sheriff’s department took some evidence from the scene to help with their investigation of the incident. They got copies of footprints in the store, tire measurements and scanned areas where the vehicle had left tire marks from spinning tires. Odom said he had employees arrive at the store by 4 a.m. to help clean the store and get them ready to open Thursday morning. The pharmacist said his hard working employees had the store prepared for taking prescriptions early Thursday. The store owner said his construction worker had worked to secure the store before the end of the business day on Thursday. While he did not have any video outside the building prior to the forced entry, Odom said he would soon after a camera to take a picture of the next one that tried to enter his pharmacy.

For 18 years the Lighthouse Foundation has reached the community through the power of the cross. On Nov. 29-30, the ministry is using basketball to help keep its vision alive. The Lighthouse Thanksgiving Classic – with a title sponsor of Physicians Urgent Care – will be held during the two days at Corinth High School. “God has done some amazing things over the last 18 years,” Lighthouse Foundation Executive Director Gary Caveness told the Corinth Rotary Club on Thursday. “There is always something that needs to be done and we are looking for ways to fund those things.” Money raised from the 12 games will benefit the many projects of the foundation. “We think it’s doable,” added foundation board member Vince Overholt. “If we promote it and do it the right way, I think Please see CLASSIC | 2A

Running stop sign leads Awards handed out for annual to felony drug charges Crossroads poetry writing contest BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com

Two Northeast Mississippi men are facing felony drug charges following their arrests by the Alcorn Narcotics Unit. On Wednesday Alcorn County deputies Scott Dalton and Shane Crowe stopped a vehicle driven by Joseph Brewster Rhodes for failing to stop at a stop sign on County Road 200. During the stop the deputies spoke to Rhodes and determined he was possibly under the influence of narcotics, according to a statement from Narcotics Officer Darrell Hopkins. Rhodes’ vehicle was checked by Dalton’s K-9 — which detected the scent of narcotics — and deputies searched the car, find-

ing a clear bag of methamphetamine in the seat. The deputies contacted Hopkins, who placed a hold on Rhodes and charged him with felony possession of methamphetamine. Rhodes is a 32-year-old resident of County Road 513, Rienzi. Bond has been set at $10,000. On the previous day, Tomas McKinney, 18, of 100 Glendale Street, Booneville, was arrested for speeding and no proof of drivers license. A search was conducted in jail, and jailers found a bag of marijuana in McKinney’s boot. Hopkins was contacted and came to the jail, where he charged McKinney with felony introducing drugs to a county jail. Bond was set at $5,000.

Winners have been announced for the annual Crossroads Poetry Project Poetry Writing Contest. The contest is held annually for local students K-12 and adult residents of the northeast Mississippi counties. Judges for the contest had a hard time picking the winners out of 900 entries, said Crossroads Poetry Project board member Donna Stockton. Many students submitted the maximum number of entries for the contest. “There were so many good entries it was hard to narrow them down,” Stockton said. Winning and honorable mention poets will all be recog-

nized at their respective school awards ceremonies and will have their work published in “Writing in the Crossroads,” the official Crossroads Poetry Contest 2013 book of poetry. Out of the winners in the student groups, one participant has placed in the contest in every year it has been held. Corinth High School junior Savannah Smith has submitted winning poems in the contest for five years straight. “She’s truly a wonderful writer,” said Stockton. Organizers of the contest have witnessed its growth each year. They hope the trend will continue and more people will get involved and make poetry a part of their lives. “We’d love to have anyone

to participate in any program we do — or to suggest new programs,” said Stockton. “We are very open to having new people join us.” The winners are divided into seven categories. Grades 1 through 12 are grouped into six categories, one for every two grades. The seventh category is for adults in the area. The following is a list of poets who placed in this year’s Poetry Writing Contest: ■ Group 1 & 2: Cheyenne Cummings, Audrey Henderson, Julia McCoy, Chloe Parker, Sabrina Patterson, Brittany Rinehart, Jaylon Stackins, Brooklyn Watson and Macy Weathers.
