Liquor law opens door for Sunday beer sales BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
With the recent approval of liquor by-the-drink sales in Corinth on Sunday, appropriately licensed restaurants may now serve beer on Sundays. Although the city’s beer regulations as currently written do not
permit Sunday sales of beer for on-premises consumption, they are overruled by regulations of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control. Several weeks ago, the ABC approved Corinth’s request to allow liquor and wine by-the-drink sales in restaurants on Sundays
from 1 to 10 p.m. “There is a regulation that does sort of automatically pull the beer along with the liquor when that is done, and the ABC has approved that request on the Sunday sales,” said City Attorney Wendell Trapp. A couple of establishments in the city began selling beer on Sun-
day several weeks ago after the ABC approved Corinth’s request regarding Sunday liquor sales in restaurants, and there was initially some uncertainty among city officials about the legality of what those establishments were doing. According to the ABC, “If the hours for selling alcoholic bever-
ages have been extended by the Department of Revenue, then the hours for beer sales is likewise extended to the same hours of sale as alcoholic beverages for that community or resort area.” Thus, beer sales for on-premises conPlease see BEER | 2

Interest heating up for chili cook-off BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com
Local interest is rising this year for the 6th Annual Crossroads Chili Cook-Off. “We have seen an increase in local entries this year,” said event organizer Steve Knight. “We’ve had lots of local people calling, asking questions. Hopefully some more will sign up next week.” As of Friday a total of 28 teams, including six local teams, have signed up for the Chili Cook-Off. Registration will remain open until the day of the event, Saturday, April 6. Teams that wish to register on Cook-Off day should attend the registration session from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Corinth Depot. For the first time ever, all money raised by the Chili CookOff will go to the Corinth-Alcorn County Animal Shelter. “What we’re hoping to do is out of all proceeds we’ll hold back a certain amount for next year — seed money — but all the profit will go to the animal shelter,” explained Knight. Crossroads Chili Cook-Off Tshirts will be sold by the shelter
as well. The cook-off will again be held in conjunction with the Green Market at the Corinth Depot and will once again be sanctioned by the International Chili Society. The winner of each category will qualify for the World Championship Cook-Off. Categories are: red, chili verde and salsa. In the People’s Choice Chili Tasting the public can sample chili made by the professionals from noon to 2 p.m. People’s Choice participants will purchase a ticket for $5, with all proceeds going to the animal shelter. Crossroads Chili Cook-Off organizers wish to give a big thanks to their sponsors: CocaPlease see COOK-OFF | 2

On this day in history 150 years ago Confederate Gen. John S. Bowen proposes building a “iron casemate or tower battery” at Grand Gulf, Miss. His plan is to construct a rotating iron turret, 10 feet above the ground, on a platform based on the design of a railroad turntable. The battery, in which he planned to place four cannon, is not built.
