September has always felt like a month of fresh starts and bittersweet transitions. Maybe that explains why I’ve been feeling a little melancholy lately. Change is on the horizon for me, and while I’m excited about the renewed energy and promise of new adventures ahead, I also know that change means saying goodbye to some familiar routines—even a few that, if I’m being truthful, never felt quite right. Sometimes we become so accustomed to our routines that we forget we can change them.

Martha Meredith By Doreen Sargente | Photos provided by Martha Meredith f you’re looking for a definition of what it means to live life to the fullest, look no further than Jefferson Landing’s very own Martha Meredith. Since moving to the Leland area in 2011, Martha has brought a vibrant energy, a deep love for her family, and a knack for reinventing herself to our community.

Martha and her late husband, Dave, who sadly passed away in December 2024 at the age of 85, originally hailed from New York. The couple first crossed paths at Binghamton University while working in Student Career Development Services. Decades later, it was Dave’s love for kayaking that sparked their move south after friends talked about paddling on the Cape Fear River. While leaving the Empire State can be tough, Martha had a secret weapon to get her family on board: her daughter, Holly, was a massive Dawson’s Creek fan. Once Holly realized her parents were moving to the show's actual filming stomping grounds, the relocation got an enthusiastic thumbs-up! Family remains the cornerstone of Martha’s life. Her son, Parker (41), moved to North Carolina with them and works as a User Experience Designer for REEDS Jewelers. Her daughter, Holly (40), lives in Charlton, New York, with her husband Christian and their three-and-ahalf-year-old son, Talon. Both Parker and Holly were adopted as infants from South Korea, and Martha

beams with pride when she talks about them. With a BS in Graphic Design and Advertising from Cornell and an MS in Computer Science from Binghamton, Martha’s 40-year career spanned everything from technical management at IBM to career development at various colleges. After retiring to Leland, Martha happily rediscovered her artistic roots by joining local communities of potters at The Cameron Art Museum, Orange Street, and the Leland Cultural Arts Center, or, as she affectionately calls them, "people who play in the mud." When she isn't creating art, you can find her at her favorite spinning classes. Martha’s favorite personal mantra is, "You’re never too old to learn new things!" Shortly after moving, she noticed what looked like a carnival outside Lowe's Foods. A friend from spin class clued her in: it was a movie set. "She told me she was going to be an extra and said, 'Apply and come do it with me!' That was the beginning of years of so much fun." From 2012 all the way through 2026, Martha became a staple of the Wilmington film scene. Her impressive background-acting resume includes hits like We’re the Millers, Under the Dome, Halloween II, and The Summer I Turned Pretty. Most recently, Martha spotted a casting call looking for extras in their 60s and 70s. Thinking she might have

© Best Version Media finally aged out of the industry, she took a chance anyway. The result? She and one other woman were hired to be the official "Fitness Gals Walking." Global Passions, Coastal Home By Doreen Sargente // Photos provided by Archie Gidwani From Center Stage to the Coast: Meet Archie & Deepak Gidwani If you happen to stroll past the Hammock Pool on a warm afternoon, or catch the rhythmic sounds of a pickleball game in full swing, you might just run into Archie Gidwani. At 63, Archie possesses the kind of vibrant, forward-moving energy that makes you wonder if she’s secretly cracked the code on adding extra hours to the day. Along with her husband, 67-year-old Deepak, Archie has spent the last few years turning their corner of the Shelmore subdivision into a home base for their next great chapter. 12

But to really understand how this dynamic couple ended up in North Carolina, you must rewind the script a few decades and travel across the globe to New Delhi, India.

A Script Written in New Delhi Long before they were navigating the logistics of global moves, Archie and Deepak were just two young professionals finding their footing in India's bustling capital. Archie was diving into the world of market research after earning a mathematics degree and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management— one of Asia’s premier business schools. Deepak, meanwhile, was

While their day jobs were grounded in numbers, logic, and blueprints, their evenings belonged to the arts. Both were members of a local amateur theater group, sharing a deep love for the stage, and it didn't take long for a mutual spark to ignite. "Rehearsing after a long workday never felt like an extra chore to us," Archie recalls of that time. "It was where all our energy and passion really came alive."

© Best Version Media Deepak prefers a slightly different pace for his exercise, often spotted taking long, scenic walks through the neighborhood, soaking in the beautiful surroundings. Three days a week, he can be found on the tennis courts playing doubles, either here in Brunswick Forest or at Waterford. What they love most about the community is its sheer inclusivity. No matter what a person's niche interest might be, Shelmore seems to have a club, a court, or a conversation waiting for them.

Those early days were defined by a classic, bohemian sort of hustle. By day, they worked their corporate gigs; by night, they threw themselves into intense play rehearsals. Once the curtains closed on practice, the cast would inevitably pile into someone’s living room. They would order takeout, crank up the music, dance, and talk late into the night. It was an era of pure fun and creative energy, cementing a bond that would take them across oceans.

For Archie and Deepak, the neighborhood amenities aren't just perks listed on a real estate brochure; they are a lifestyle. Archie quickly dove into the local scene, picking up bridge and connecting with a whole new circle of card players. On any given day, she can be found dropping in for a casual game of tennis or pickleball, or enjoying a peaceful swim at the Hammock Pool.

The Road to Shelmore For a long time, home was Chicago. But by October 2022, the biting Midwestern winters had lost their charm, and the coast was calling. They wanted a change of scenery, milder weather, and a place with a distinct personality. Wilmington fit the bill perfectly. It offered the ideal balance: close enough to the mountains for their love of hiking, rich in cultural opportunities, and packed with active communities. They settled into Shelmore, and it

Deepak eventually headed to the United States to earn his master’s degree from UT Austin, and life soon became a whirlwind of international adventures. The couple lived and worked in India, relocated to Singapore, and eventually moved to the United States. Today, both are successfully self-employed—Archie as a strategy consultant and Deepak as a structural engineer—navigating the modern world of remote work together.

A Global Family Tree While Archie and Deepak have built a beautiful life in North Carolina, their family tree has roots and branches stretching far and wide. The couple has two adult children who have inherited their parents' drive, intellect, and zest for life. Mishka (32): Their daughter followed a high-powered academic path, earning a degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University, followed by a PhD in Molecular Medicine from Case Western and the Cleveland Clinic. Today, she works as a scientist for AstraZeneca and lives in Washington, D.C. Chailuv (27): Their son has taken a deep dive into the fast-paced world of American politics. He works as a Finance Director for congressional election campaigns, helping candidates run for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Despite their demanding careers, the kids share a thrilling mutual hobby: scuba diving. And while Archie and Deepak don't currently have pets of their own—having said goodbye to a beloved family cat who spent her final golden years with their daughter—they still get their feline fix through Mishka's two cats, a pair of inseparable siblings named Prince and Tundra. Passions, Plays, and Passports If there is one thing that defines the Gidwani household, it’s that they don't believe in passive leisure. They are a family of doers. Give them a quiet evening at home, and they will likely dust off a board game for a fierce, friendly family competition. Give them a few weeks off, and they

Archie also dedicates time to personal growth and community connection as a member of the Wilmington Toastmasters Club, and she regularly channels her insights into an article for us right here in Brunswick Forest Living Magazine. And, of course, that old theater bug never truly left. Last year, Archie stepped into the director's chair for a production of the acclaimed play Crimes of the Heart. The show was staged at the Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) theater and turned into a massive success. It became a true community affair, with plenty of Shelmore neighbors turning up in the audience to cheer her on, and a few even rolling up their sleeves to help out behind the scenes. "Directing Crimes of the Heart was such a full-circle moment for me," Archie says. "Having neighbors in the audience and helping backstage made it feel like our creative roots from New Delhi had found brand new soil right here." A Warm Hello to the Neighborhood Though they have been here since 2022 and have already woven themselves into the fabric of the community through sports, theater, and travel, Archie and Deepak feel like they are just getting started. Because they both still run their own businesses and work fulltime hours during the week, they haven’t had the chance to meet everyone just yet. But if you see Deepak out on his walks, or on the tennis court or spot Archie heading to the pickleball courts, or happen to sit across from her at a bridge table, don’t hesitate to say hello. They are incredibly eager to keep connecting, sharing stories, and getting to know the wonderful people who make their beautiful subdivision feel so much like home.g

Short & Sweet Topped Shots Swing Fixes: and Thin Shots By Nicole Weller One of the most fun aspects of hitting a golf ball is that crisp, solid sound and feel when the ball finds the absolute center of the club face during impact… there’s nothing like it! A friend and colleague of mine who played successfully on Tour for a long time said players expect maybe 3-5 great shots during a round as planned, the rest are mostly acceptable and get the job done. She noted that Tour players miss the ball much better than most golfers though, so their missed shots aren’t as bad. Good misses are key and as long as poor misses are playable and can be advanced, golfers can still score. What’s happening? Topped shots occur when the bottom of the club head contacts only the top of the golf ball and may hop forward a few feet or some yards forward, it’s not a solid strike at all. Thin shots occur when the bottom of the club head contacts the equator or middle of the ball and flies out further but doesn’t gain much altitude although it may run a long way, which is great if nothing is in the way and it can roll on its merry way. It’s not pretty but it can work. My first hole-in-one at age 14 with my dad during a practice round at Scituate C.C. in Massachusetts on hole 2 never made it off the ground, it was a beautiful, thin shot that rolled all the way up the hill and into the hole. The scorecard said 1, it didn’t say how and I’m often happy that we aren’t judged with quality scores like in the Olympics. Can you imagine also getting a rating for each shot like an 8.5 or 9.2? You don’t need a perfect 9.9 or 10 to play good golf, they just need to move towards the hole in most cases. It’s definitely more fun and there are times we have to be solid to gain trajectory over obstacles and for soft landings.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

The ball is positioned too far forward in the stance nearer the lead foot where the swing arc is beginning to ascend up. Shorter irons tend to be played best near the middle of the stance, longer irons / hybrids / fairway woods mid-forward under the lead eye or ear closer to the target and driver inside the lead foot.

The arms (levers) begin extended allowing the club head to reach the ground at set-up. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons they don’t return back to that low point during impact. The arms and club make a Y at set-up and should return as such but topped or thin shots have the arms look more like a letter W with the arms folded up, lifting the club off the ground during the most important moment, impact.

The body’s posture changes taller during the swing. Some may not even begin bent forward enough from the hips at the start and then others may also change posture (spine angle) during the swing. It’s not normal for a body to bend forward and then rotate while in a side bent posture. While many are told they picked up their head, it’s usually not that but the entire spine that the head is connected to that has elevated for whatever reason.
