There’s something about autumn that makes me want to slow down, drink hot tea, read poetry, bake desserts, and maybe take an afternoon nap without feeling the least bit guilty about it. After the relentless heat of the past few months—and some personal transitions of my own—I find myself turning a little more inward and thinking about the simple things that genuinely make me happy. Maybe that’s one of the gifts of fall. The changing seasons remind us that we don’t always have to be moving at full speed. Sometimes it’s perfectly okay to slow down and enjoy the comforting predictability of familiar rhythms. Or, as I prefer to think of it: I’m not lazy; I’m simply in energy-saving mode for fall. This month, I’m thrilled to share the story of one of Brunswick Forest’s favorite fitness and health gurus, Alan Murphy. Alan’s journey to becoming a selfproclaimed holistic health coach and fitness trainer was anything but a straight line. From television broadcasting and real estate deals to cookbooks and fitness, his story proves that sometimes the most interesting destinations come from taking the long way around. Get to know Alan and his fascinating journey on page 12. Beyond our neighborhood, the Leland and Belville area continue to grow, bringing new businesses and services closer to home. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Forward Physio and meet owner Adam Salzman, whose mother, Audrey Salzman, owns Fitness Forward. Adam recently relocated his physical therapy practice to the Leland/ Belville area, and I was impressed by his extensive training and approach to rehabilitation. Among his credentials, Adam is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (FAAOMPT), one of the profession’s most advanced credentials in orthopedic manual physical therapy. He also holds advanced training in osteopractic care and strength and conditioning. It’s always exciting to discover talented professionals choosing to invest in our growing community. If you’re curious about Adam and Forward Physio, stop by, introduce yourself, and welcome another new business to our area. So, here’s to October—cooler days, open windows, something delicious baking in the oven, and maybe permission to slow down just a little. Ciao,

The Masterful Life and Craft of Warren Schulz By Doreen Sargente | Photos provided by Warren Schulz young, Warren holds a lifetime of memories crafted by hand, a beautiful 55-year marriage, and a career as a master engraver that has connected him to some of the most iconic figures in modern history.
I
f you ever want to get a masterclass in precision, dedication, and some truly incredible storytelling, you just need to sit down with Parkview resident Warren Schulz. At 80 years
Warren’s story really kicked into high gear back in 1964, the monumental year he met his wife, Paula. Together, they built a beautiful family of two children: their daughter, Phyllis, whom they proudly adopted, and their son, Charles, whose birth completed their tight-knit circle. Today, their children are thriving in distinct careers: Charles works as a Repair Coordinator for LUX Lighting, while Phyllis, who
holds a PhD in education, serves as the Associate Provost and Dean of Financial Aid at CUNY. Rounding out the Schulz household is Daisy, their delightfully loyal 14-year-old Beagle. Before he was a family man, Warren’s journey into the precise world of engraving began with regular schooling, followed by lettering courses at the Washington School of Art while he was serving his country in the Navy. That specialized training paved the way for a legendary, lifelong career. Warren spent his entire professional life with the prestigious Tiffany & Co., starting as a humble apprentice (a grueling process that

Using traditional methods—coating pieces in "Chinese White," handsketching inscriptions with a lead pencil, scratching guide lines with a steel tip, and carefully cutting away the metal using specialized tools—Warren became the go-to engraver for the elite. Over the decades, his hands etched history onto timeless items. He engraved a custom 1982 gift in Arabic for the King of Saudi Arabia on behalf of Texaco Oil, a watch for First Lady Barbara Bush from the "Ladies of the Senate," and the 1980 USA Olympic Hockey Team’s gold medals. His portfolio reads like a Who's Who of the 20th century: a 25-year commemorative watch for news anchor Tom Brokaw, a "Golden Ticket Award" for theater legend Helen Hayes, a money clip for President Gerald Ford, a tie bar for Vice President Dan Quayle, and a large gold disc for McDonald's mogul Ray Kroc in 1981. He even
engraved baby cups for Frank Sinatra and cufflinks for virtuoso violinist Itzhak Perlman. But Warren’s talents weren’t just for the famous; they were also used to give back. During his 15 years as a dedicated member and President of the Kiwanis Club on Long Island, he personally designed a special fundraising pin for the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center at North Shore Hospital, raising vital funds for children in need. Nearly 18 years ago, Warren and Paula traded in the fast pace and heavy taxes of their home in Garden City, Long Island, for retirement in the welcoming community of Parkview. As one of the very first families to move into the neighborhood, Warren fondly remembers the early days when three or four of the local developments would gather as one big family for massive, fun-filled parties at the pool,
the park, and the commons. While things have quieted down a bit since then, Warren stays plenty active. He loves hitting the golf course, participating in local card and poker clubs, and passionately volunteering his time with the "Honor Flight" network to support fellow veterans. Though he and Paula don't travel quite as much now, they look back fondly on a lifetime of adventure, including multiple trips to Italy, visits to Barcelona, annual getaways to Le Blanc in Mexico, cruises, and countless road trips exploring the American West and North Carolina. With a beautiful family by his side, a neighborhood where everything is "in reach," and a legacy literally etched into gold and silver, Warren Schulz is living proof of a life beautifully crafted. w

Comfort for Christmas:
Bringing Warmth, Comfort, and Hope to a Local Family Submitted by Tonya Williams | Photos provided by O'Brien Service Company
T
he holiday season is often a time of gathering with loved ones, making memories, and enjoying the comfort of home. Unfortunately, for some families, an aging or failed heating and cooling system can make that comfort difficult to achieve. At O'Brien Service Company, we have always believed that serving our community goes beyond providing Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, and Electrical services. As a locally owned and operated family business since 1981, we understand the important role a safe and comfortable home plays in a family’s overall well-being. That is why we are proud of our ongoing Comfort for Christmas Giveaway. In past years, this program has helped bring neighbors together to support local families facing financial hardships, health concerns, or other circumstances that make purchasing a new heating and cooling system difficult.
Through these past efforts, deserving recipients received a new HVAC system and professional installation at no cost, helping provide yearround comfort for years to come. Many homeowners continue to rely on older HVAC systems that struggle to keep up with changing temperatures, require frequent repairs, or operate inefficiently. For families facing financial hardships, replacing a system may simply not be possible. Programs like Comfort for Christmas are designed to provide meaningful support to those who need it most. Reflecting on past recipients—such as our 2024 and 2025 winners— reminds us of the incredible difference a functioning system makes in the comfort and quality of life for a local family. Together, we look forward to continuing to help make the holiday season a little warmer, more comfortable, and a little brighter for deserving families in our community. s

What to Expect
During a Professional Painting Project Provided by Billie Gunn Hiring a painting company shouldn’t feel like a gamble. At JBG Painting, we believe the process should be just as solid as the final result. So if you’re wondering what it looks like to work with a professional team, here’s a clear, step-by-step breakdown.
Anyone can put paint on a wall…not everyone delivers a process you can trust from start to finish.
8
© Best Version Media It Starts with One Simple Thing: You Found Us! Maybe we painted your neighbor’s house, maybe you saw one of our trucks around town, maybe someone recommended us, or you found us online. However it happened… You found us! That’s where it starts. Your Free Consultation & Estimate This is where we dig into the details. We’ll walk the space with you and discuss the scope of work, address any problem areas (repairs, peeling, gaps, etc.), and discuss our timeline. You’ll receive a clear, detailed estimate – not just a number, but a full scope of what’s included. Approval, Deposit & Scheduling Once everything looks good, we finalize the scope, collect a deposit, and lock in your spot on the schedule. We’ll also set up your color consultation if needed, so you feel confident before we begin. Meet Your Team Before the job starts, you’ll be introduced to your crew leader – your main point of contact throughout the project. This is a professional, in-house team that works together every day – not a random crew. How You Prepare (It’s Simple) We don’t expect you to turn your home upside down. All we ask is: move small, valuable, or fragile items and we handle the rest! Furniture, contents, and surfaces are carefully moved and protected by our team.
Daily Cleanup At the end of each day: • Work areas are cleaned and organized • Tools are put away • Your home is left in a livable condition Respect for your space is part of the job. Final Day: Walkthrough & Finishing Touches When everything is complete, we will walk the project with you: • Review all areas together • Address any touch-ups • Make sure everything meets expectations For full interior projects, we also provide a professional cleaning service, so your home feels fresh and ready. Final Payment & Ongoing Support Once you’re fully satisfied, final payment is collected. But it doesn’t end there. if something needs attention, we return promptly to take care of it. Final Thought – A professional painting job isn’t just about the final coat. It’s about: • The process • The communication • The care taken every step of the way • When everything is done right, the experience feels smooth – and the results speak for themselves.
We’ll also walk through and mark any picture hangers you’d like to keep in place and repair/fill everything else to give us a clean, consistent surface. Day 1: Protection & Prep This is where a professional job really begins. We take the time to protect your home: • Floors covered • Cabinets/surfaces masked with paper, plastic, and tape • Furniture fully protected Then we move into prep work, which includes: • Nail pop repairs • Drywall patching • Caulking gaps • Wood filler where needed • Sanding for a smooth surface • Priming problem areas This step is the foundation of a long-lasting finish. Clean Air & Dust Control We take steps to keep your home comfortable and clean: • Dust-reducing and dustless sanding tools • Air scrubbers to filter particles and VOCs You’re not living in a construction zone – we manage the environment. Painting Phase Once prep is complete, we move into painting: • Professional application techniques • Consistent coverage • Clean lines and attention to detail All handled by a trained, in-house team.

FAMILY FEATURE
© Best Version Media Alan Murphy's
Unconventional Path to Wellness By Doreen Sargente | Photos provided by Alan Murphy
I
f you trace the path of Alan’s life, you will notice a recurring theme: whether he is producing a live newscast, closing a real estate deal, or motivating a room full of indoor cyclists at dawn, he knows how to keep an audience engaged, and somehow manages to make burpees seem almost reasonable. Almost. Alan grew up in the quiet mountain town of Sparta in Western North Carolina. Aiming for a career behind the camera and microphone, he headed south to the University of Georgia to study telecommunications, graduating in 1988. The 1990s brought him to Wilmington during the height of the area’s film industry boom. From there, he stepped into the fast-paced world of television news, landing a role as a producer for WWAY. It was a position that required wearing almost every hat in the station, including reporting and even anchoring on occasion. When the station transferred him to Lumberton, Alan effectively became a broadcast one-man band—reporting on stories by day and wielding the camera himself. It was a grueling, jack-of-all-trades trial by fire. Then came a cross-country adventure. He packed up his life, stuffed every last belonging into a reliable Toyota, and headed west to San Francisco to stay with a college friend. West Coast living came with its own quirks, including a job in Salinas as an assistant news producer three days a week that required a brutal twohour commute each way. After two years of California dreamin' (and California commuting), the realities of the West Coast cost of living and the pull of family and beaches brought him back home to North Carolina. Settling initially in Winston-Salem to be closer to family, Alan pivoted into real estate. He found swift success, eventually moving back to Wilmington and finding himself in an office that was complete with a panoramic view of the Cape Fear River. But when the 2008 housing market crash hit, the ripple effects forced the office to close in 2010. What could have been a setback turned into a major life reinvention.
Hiking in Zion 12
Having earned a Spin certification, Alan began teaching early-morning indoor cycling classes a few days a week in Wilmington. What started as a side gig quickly blossomed into a full-fledged calling. Today, Alan teaches around 15 classes a week, maintaining a loyal following of roughly 72
© Best Version Media regular participants. Beyond the spin bike, his TRX classes have become an unexpected community hub where friendships are forged. His regulars aren't just working out together; they are supporting each other through life's tough moments and celebrating the triumphs as a group. Alan’s influence extends far beyond the gym floor. His weekly newsletter serves up practical tips and bite-sized insights to help readers live their best, healthiest lives. Then there is his well-loved Cookbook Club, which he launched over seven years ago. The club has become such a hit that waitlists are practically standard practice. Held once a month in the summer and twice a month during the cooler fall and winter seasons, the concept has proven so popular that he recently introduced it to his neighborhood in Magnolia Green. And if that isn’t enough, the next big project on his radar is a dedicated Brunswick Forest Cookbook. When asked about his personal culinary favorites, Alan tilts heavily toward Mediterranean flavor profiles. "Honestly, with Mediterranean food, it's almost impossible to pick just one favorite recipe," he admits with a smile. "It's all about fresh, bright ingredients that naturally make you feel good.” That philosophy on food ties directly into the memorable community retreats he used to host. Not long after moving to Brunswick Forest, I had the opportunity to experience another side of Alan's passion for wellness by attending one of the retreats he organized in the mountains of western North Carolina. The weekend proved to be equal parts relaxing, educational, and surprisingly eye-opening. The revelation wasn't that healthy food could taste good—I already loved vegetables. It was something much more unexpected: I was never hungry. Alan's carefully planned meals and snacks were so satisfying that there were actually days when I couldn't finish everything on the menu. For someone who has been known to regard a cannoli as one of life's essential food groups, that was nothing short of astonishing. I wasn't counting the minutes until the next meal or secretly plotting my escape to the nearest bakery. Instead, I felt energized, satisfied, and learned that clean eating doesn't have to mean feeling deprived. That simple realization completely changed the way I thought about healthy eating. The retreat also demonstrated that wellness isn't simply about exercise classes. It was about slowing down, learning, laughing, sharing meals, and returning home with practical habits that felt realistic enough to continue long after the weekend ended. Unfortunately, COVID brought those retreats to a halt. Finding the right venue has also become more difficult; the location that hosted those early retreats has become a little tired around the edges over the years. The good news? Alan hasn't abandoned the idea.
"Wellness shouldn't feel like a chore or a penalty. Finding the right environment to unplug, eat well, and recharge together makes all the difference." In fact, he’s already keeping his eyes open globally. Having just returned from a trip to Panama, Alan spent time scouting potential location options for future retreats. As he puts it: "Wellness shouldn't feel like a chore or a penalty. Finding the right environment to unplug, eat well, and recharge together makes all the difference." When he finally announces the next one, make sure to get your name on the list early—it comes highly recommended! Travel is a major source of inspiration for him. He frequents spots in Florida like Tampa and Fort Lauderdale, heads to Myrtle Beach for quick getaways, and makes international trips to places like Scotland, Spain, and Portugal. Yet, despite all his travels, he makes a point to return to his roots in Sparta every six weeks or so to visit his mother.

Small group training
Though he spends his days leading crowds and inspiring groups, Alan describes himself as an "extroverted introvert." He genuinely loves connecting with people, but when it’s time to recharge his own batteries, he opts for quieter pursuits—usually a long walk on the beach or a quiet trail hike through Brunswick Nature Park alongside his dogs. "When you're younger, fitness is often just about how hard you can push yourself in the moment," Alan reflects. Youthful intensity has given way to a balanced life view built on what he calls the Six Pillars of Health: Exercise, Diet, Managing Stress, Community, and Preventative Care. And if that balanced life occasionally includes dessert? Well, some of us are still works in progress. w

Walk with Brunswick Forest
WALK TO END ALZHEIMER'S Story and photos by Kathy Kemp
October 31, 2026 UNCW Greene Track & Field Registration 9am Opening Ceremony 10am
On October 31, 2026, the Wilmington community will come together for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s at UNCW’s Greene Track and Field. (Registration 9:00 a.m.; Opening Ceremony/Walk 10:00 a.m.)
Which flower do you hold?
Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that affects far more than the person diagnosed. It reaches into the lives of spouses, children, caregivers, and entire families. My family, and many others in Brunswick Forest, have been touched by the disease and understand it takes love, patience, companionship, and support through the many difficult stages of the disease. Alzheimer’s is a journey that no family should have to face alone.
I walk because I care for someone with Alzheimer’s I walk because I'm living with Alzheimer’s I walk because I've lost someone to Alzheimer’s I walk in support of the vision of a world without Alzheimer’s
For further info and to register, go to act.alz.org
This is why the work of the Alzheimer’s Association is so important. Its mission is to lead the way toward ending Alzheimer’s and all other dementias by accelerating research, promoting early detection and risk reduction, and maximizing quality care and support for those affected. The Association provides valuable resources, education, support programs, and assistance for caregivers and families. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s represents hope. New to the NEIGHBORHOOD By Debby Daigle | Photo provided by Adam Salzman Physio and meet its owner, Dr. Adam Salzman, PT, DPT, FAAOMPT.
therapy, dry needling, and movementbased care.
Some of you may recognize the Salzman name. Adam is the son of Audrey Salzman, owner of Fitness Forward, and recently brought his physical therapy practice to Leland. I enjoyed learning about Adam’s background, extensive training, and his philosophy of helping people not only recover from an injury, but continue doing the activities they love.
Forward Physio also offers diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, which can provide real-time visualization of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other structures when clinically appropriate.
Forward Physio, a new physical therapy practice focused on helping active adults recover from pain and injury while staying active, has opened in Leland. Founded by Dr. Adam Salzman, Forward Physio provides individualized, one-on-one care without overlapping appointments or treatment handoffs. “Our goal is to give people the time and attention needed to understand what is actually limiting them and build a clear plan to get back to what they enjoy,” said Salzman. “Whether that’s lifting, running, golf, pickleball, swimming, or simply staying active, treatment should be built around the individual.” The Leland and Belville area continues to grow, and with that growth comes new businesses and services for our community. I always enjoy getting out and meeting the people behind these businesses, and recently I had the opportunity to visit Forward
Salzman is a fellowship-trained orthopedic manual physical therapist, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and former Division I swimmer. His approach combines orthopedic rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, advanced manual
The practice primarily serves active adults, athletes, lifters, runners, golfers, pickleball players, and others who want to remain active throughout the recovery process. Forward Physio follows a three-phase approach: Calm symptoms, Build strength and physical capacity, and Move Forward by returning patients to the demands of their sport, training, work, and lifestyle. The practice serves Leland, Wilmington, and surrounding Cape Fear communities and offers complimentary 15-minute consultation calls for prospective patients who want to learn more and determine whether Forward Physio may be a good fit for their needs. About Forward Physio Forward Physio is a one-on-one physical therapy practice in Leland specializing in orthopedic and sports rehabilitation, with an emphasis on helping active adults get out of pain, rebuild capacity, and confidently return to the activities they love.

What comes to mind when watching an accomplished amateur or professional golfer swing a club? Is it the whoosh sound that the clubs makes? Is it the seemingly effortless smooth move seen from start to finish? Is it the great balance? To make this happen, one of the keys within a golf swing is being tension-free in the arms and as a teaching professional, I can tell you that’s one thing we don’t see with many golf swings. Golfers ‘grip’ the club so firmly that their knuckles turn white, their hands get sore and their arms block all the energy from smoothly traveling from the body out through the hands and into that golf club. Tension is a big problem, so what can we do about it? I was just teaching at a big PGA Women’s Clinic corporate event in Charlotte and host / former LPGA player Jane Blalock was there. She mentioned that she doesn’t hold the club soft but gently… sometimes different words bring about a better image. Either way, the pressure was definitely on the lighter than tighter side!
Trusted Care for your Furry Family
By Nicole Weller
1
Change wording from grip as a verb to grip as a noun and then the verb being hold, place or apply. Place your hands on the club. Apply your hands to the grip. Hold the club. But please don’t GRIP it! For righthanded golfers, Tight usually goes Right since the arms can’t let the club head release softly around. The hands have to be able to allow the energy to let the club swing.
2 3 4 5
Imagine your arms being two thick ropes or lines like at a gym or on a boat instead of two steel rods. One could even imagine the arms being like the tips of a fishing rod with some suppleness and flex to them. Hit shots / chips / pitches with five different grip pressures from extremely light to extremely firm. You could even use a number system from 1 (soft) to 5 (firm). Keep the same grip pressure in both hands and keep it constant throughout the swing. Do this four times with each of the grip pressures. Can you start with a 2 in each hand and finish with a 2? Or do you start with a 1 and end with a 4? What pressure is best for you? Repeat #3 with different tension levels in your forearms and shoulders. What pressure is best for you? You can get a sensor to measure grip pressure. I used to have a grip way back when that screeched loudly if it was held too tightly. I loved that as a training tool, made for one loud session in most cases! Unfortunately it was on a club permanently but these days there are other tools out there, like Smart Swing that measures pressure.
Figure out what tension works best for your body to transmit the energy through your arms and into the club with arm ‘ropes’ instead of ‘steel rods’ and I hope you start seeing more shots get out there long and in play with

Tiramisu
RECIPE CORNER
A classic Italian dessert, this no-bake tiramisu recipe is just what you need if you want something elegant. By Candy Ahlquist INGREDIENTS • 1 cup espresso or very strong coffee room temperature
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Stir together the coffee and 1/2 cup of dark rum in a medium bowl and set aside. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mascarpone and the remaining 1/2 cup of dark rum. Whisk together or beat with a hand mixer on medium speed until well combined. Set aside. 3. In a double-boiler, combine the egg yolks and sugar in the top. Or, combine them in a medium heat-proof mixing bowl. Whisk until well combined. Bring 2 inches of water to a simmer in a small pot. Place the egg yolk mixture over the simmering water making sure the water does not touch the bowl. Whisk constantly until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is light yellow in color and thickened a bit, about 5 to 8 minutes 4. Pour the egg yolk mixture into the mascarpone and whisk until combined. Place in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to cool. 5. In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine the cream and vanilla. Beat on medium speed until stiff peaks form, 3 to 5 minutes 6. Fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture. (You can whisk through it at the end to mix in any unmixed bits.)
•
1 cup dark rum divided
•
16 ounces mascarpone
•
6 large egg yolks
•
⅔ cup granulated sugar
•
2 cups heavy whipping cream
•
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
•
40 ladyfingers
•
⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
FOR THE ASSEMBLY 1. Working with one at a time, dip the top and bottom of a ladyfinger briefly in the coffee mixture. (They sop up the liquid quickly so they don't need more than 2 seconds of dipping.) Arrange enough ladyfingers in a single layer to cover the bottom of a 9x13-inch dish. Try not to leave any gaps. 2. Add half of the mascarpone mixture on top of the ladyfingers and smooth out to the edges using an offset spatula Dip more ladyfingers, arranging them in a single layer on top of the filling as you go. Add the remaining mascarpone mixture and smooth out into an even layer. 3. Dust top with the cocoa powder and chill overnight. Your tiramisu needs time to set up, or it will be a delicious mess. NOTES: For the best-tasting tiramisu, refrigerate it for at least 6 hours.
