Spring has o cially arrived in Brunswick Forest. The warmer weather, lower humidity, and longer days mean more time outside with friends—whether it’s pickleball, cornhole, biking, or backyard cookouts.
Of course, spring in coastal North Carolina also means pollen. That unmistakable yellow dust seems to settle on every porch, car, and patio table. Like many of you, I keep a box of tissues nearby this time of year—but if that’s the trade-o for blooming owers and beautiful days, I’ll gladly take it.
This month’s issue is lled with great community stories. Be sure to turn to page 14 to read about Sandy and Linda Morrison, our resident bike ride organizers who have built a fun and active cycling group here in Brunswick Forest.
You’ll also meet Lisa and Je rey Van Putton, founders of Oma’s on Parkwood on page 8. Their mission is to create a loving and inclusive home for seniors, and their story is a great example of the compassion and care happening right here in our community.
And don’t forget to save the date for May 2nd and 3rd. Brunswick Forest will host our 4th Annual Home & Lifestyle Expo, expanded this year to include a Health Resource Show on Saturday, May 2nd. You can read more details about the event on page 6. Sunday’sHome&LifestyleExpowillfeaturemanyoftheregion’stophomeremodeling and maintenance professionals, along with live music from Bill Marquardt, shrimp cocktail and libations from Shuckin’ Shack, and our Outdoor Living Expo at The Commons with Rex & Sons RV, Freedom Boat Club, and more.
Thank you for being loyal readers of Brunswick Forest Living. Hearing how much this publication means to residents truly inspires us. Recently, Hannelore Ridgely wrote:
“During the ve years of living in Brunswick Forest, I have thoroughly enjoyed receiving your monthly magazine… it truly brings our community together.”
Notes like that inspire Doreen and me to continue working each month to bring this publication to your mailbox.
Enjoy the beautiful spring days—and keep those Kleenex close by!

Debby Daigle Publisher ddaigle@bestversionmedia.com

As the sunshine lingers a little longer and the rst buds begin to appear, there’s no denying that spring—and its wonderful sense of renewal—is nally here. After the chilly winter we've had, it feels soooooo good!
We were thrilled by the response to our February cover feature! Our recent presentation at The Commons was standing room only, so for those who were waitlisted, keep an eye out: we are scheduling an encore session for May, and I promise...everyone will get a seat!
I hope you’re enjoying each monthly edition of Brunswick Forest Living. Curating stories from around the neighborhood has been a joy. If you have local news to share or would like to be featured in an upcoming issue, please reach out!
Finally, a sincere thank you to our sponsors. Their continued support makes this publication possible, and we are so grateful for their partnership.

often followed by a 13+ mile bike ride. And just in case that sounds too restful, many days end with pickleball. “I love the sport,” she says, “but more than anything I love being outside and the wonderful friends I’ve met.”
When she’s not moving, she’s… still moving, just in a chair. Mahjong, cards, book club, study group, volunteering, time with friends—her calendar looks like it’s running a marathon of its own. Sitting idle isn’t really her thing. “I rarely sit ‘idle,’” Suzie says. And when she is home, relaxing means knitting, crocheting, sewing, or diving into arts and crafts. Apparently, rest is just activity with softer furniture.
Her love of helping started early. At 14, she volunteered as a Candy Striper, and she’s been giving back ever since. “I think it’s important to try to give back to the community and people around you,” she says. She also admits she has a hard time turning things down. “I have never really learned to say ‘no,’”

That attitude has led her to countless games, groups, places, and adventures. “So many new things to try, games to learn, places to visit! Mountains to hike!” she says. She believes that curiosity is part of staying young. “I think that is what I hope will help with the aging process.”
Travel is one of her biggest loves, a trait she credits to her dad. “I always had a sense of wanderlust—probably inherited from my Dad,” she says. And she’s put that wanderlust to serious use: all 50 U.S. states and their capitals, plus all seven continents. But one place tops them all. “Nothing will ever beat stepping foot on Antarctica,” Suzie says. “Such a unique place—so peaceful, quiet, beautiful. Icebergs, glaciers, wildlife… just nature!”
And she’s not slowing down. As I write this, she's in Egypt, and Portugal is in the lineup for the spring. Her suitcase is basically in a long-term relationship with the closet floor.

Suzie and her husband John spent their whole lives in upstate New York, in the Binghamton area, before retiring and moving here 11 years ago. They have a daughter, a son, and three grandchildren they adore. This year, they’ll celebrate a big milestone: 50 years of marriage.
Between the early mornings, nonstop activities, volunteering, global adventures, and family time, Suzie proves that staying busy isn’t about filling hours—it’s about filling life. Or as she might put it, it’s about saying yes, lacing up your sneakers, and seeing what happens next.

PHOTOS SUBMITTED BY THE PUTTEN FAMILY
When Jeffrey and Lisa Van Putten opened the doors to Oma’s on Parkwood in Leland, they had one simple vision: to create a place that feels like home—not a cold, impersonal institution. Nestled on a quiet, tree-lined street in the Parkwood Estates neighborhood, this licensed Family Care Home blends compassionate senior care with the genuine warmth of an everyday living room rather than a clinical facility.
Lisa and Jeffrey didn’t stumble onto senior care by accident—this deeply personal mission grew from their own family story. Inspired by their beloved grandmother (the “Oma” of Oma’s on Parkwood), they saw firsthand how a small, home-like environment could transform a senior’s quality of life. After witnessing her blossom in a family care home setting—becoming more engaged, joyful, and connected—they knew that this was something more people deserved.
Today, that experience shapes everything the Van Puttens do.
“We want every resident to feel loved, needed, and still useful,” says Lisa, whose lifelong passion for caregiving drives the heart of the home.

Under Jeffrey’s thoughtful leadership as Facility Director, they renovated a 2,700-square-foot ranch with careful attention to both safety and comfort— without losing that “just walked into someone’s living room” feel. Wide open spaces, plenty of natural light, and welcoming furnishings make the environment familiar and reassuring. Every detail, from the freshly scrubbed floors to the sunny back deck and patio, reflects a desire to make residents feel genuinely at ease.
Oma’s on Parkwood is licensed to serve up to six residents in a familycare home setting—significantly smaller and more personalized than larger assisted living communities. This intimate size isn’t just aesthetic; it’s fundamental to the culture of care here. With 24/7 assistance from trained caregivers, every resident receives support with daily activities, including:
• Meal preparation and dining assistance
Medication management
Personal hygiene and bathing
Laundry and housekeeping
• Daily exercises and social activities
"Everybody’s
— Oma, speaking about the spirit of the home.

Meals are not prepackaged or elevator-delivered—they’re prepared on-site with fresh, nutritious ingredients and designed by a dietitian. Lisa takes great pride in tailoring menus to both the dietary needs and the personal preferences of residents, so meals feel familiar and comforting.
Safety is also a priority: the home features a fully approved fire sprinkler and alarm system with continuous monitoring, monitored doors, ADAcompliant ramps, and thoughtful renovation upgrades throughout.
But even with all the practical care elements in place, what sets Oma’s on Parkwood apart is its heartbeat.

Jeffrey and Lisa don’t just provide care—they cultivate community. The home is designed to support meaningful engagement through stimulating activities that help residents stay connected, active, and engaged in what brings them joy. From group activities and walks in the garden to quiet moments on the deck watching birds flit among the trees, life at Oma’s feels like an extension of the family’s everyday rhythm.

a genuine sense that the people who live here are part of something— rather than tucked away somewhere.
This philosophy echoes the Van Putten’s belief that aging shouldn’t mean losing dignity, identity, or connection. Instead, at Oma’s on Parkwood, every resident has a place that’s meaningful, familiar, and full of possibility.
Located just 10 minutes from central Leland and about 25 minutes from downtown Wilmington, Oma’s on Parkwood combines peaceful neighborhood living with convenient access to larger community resources. Its location on a serene half-acre lot

Jeffrey and Lisa are hands-on every day—greeting families, sharing meals, supervising care, and making sure that everyone who walks through the door feels welcomed and valued.
Oma’s on Parkwood isn’t just a care home—it’s a place where later life can be lived with grace, companionship, and heart. Families who tour the home often remark that it feels less like “senior care” and more like someone’s cherished home—with the Van Puttens at the center, guiding residents and their loved ones with warmth and integrity.

Dr. Ashley Anderson brings 11 years of experience in general practice. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Zoology with a minor in Biomanufacturing from North Carolina State University and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2014 from the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine.
Raised in eastern North Carolina, Dr. Anderson is grateful for the opportunity to give back to her local community. She has special interests in dermatology and behavior and thrives on the challenge and variety that general practice offers each day. Her approach centers on creating a warm, supportive environment where patient-centered care guides every decision. Outside the clinic, she enjoys life with her four children, two dogs, and two cats.
Dr. Marc Friedericks joins the team with 18 years of veterinary experience. He earned both his Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University in 2007.
After graduation, Dr. Friedericks practiced emergency medicine for a decade in large referral hospitals in Wisconsin and later in New Jersey before transitioning into general practice. His background in emergency care gives him particular expertise in wound management and trauma stabilization, and he also has strong interests in dermatology, dentistry, and general soft tissue surgery. He and his wife share their home with numerous rescue dogs and cats, and in his spare time he enjoys golfing, hiking, and cooking.
Dr. Scott Pett, who brings more than 35 years of experience to the hospital, founded Lanvale Animal Hospital with a vision of providing advanced, compassionate care in a collaborative and supportive environment. A graduate of University of Idaho and Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Pett previously owned and operated the respected Hamilton Wenham Veterinary Hospital in Massachusetts for 15 years before relocating to Wilmington with his wife and partner, Deb.“Adding Dr. Anderson and Dr. Friedericks allows us to expand access to care while maintaining the personalized attention our clients value,” said Dr. Pett. “We share a common

deserves high-quality, individualized care — provided by a team that genuinely cares.”
The expanded medical team has enhanced Lanvale Animal Hospital’s ability to serve both new and long-time clients, introduce advanced technologies, and offer an even broader range of services for truly comprehensive care.

After this past bitterly cold winter, the arrival of Spring was a welcomed invitation to step outside and savor the season. Azaleas burst into color, songbirds returned with cheerful melodies, and longer days beckoned neighbors onto porches and garden paths. Spring is a time for fresh beginnings, outdoor gatherings, and the simple pleasure of watching something beautiful come to life. For many in Brunswick Forest, one of the most anticipated signs of the season is the return of the annual garden tour presented by the Brunswick Forest Garden Club. This tradition started in 2018 as a celebration of gardens and the people who lovingly create and maintain them.
Mark your calendars for “A Garden Stroll,” happening Thursday, May 21, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, rain or shine. The Brunswick Forest Garden Club cordially invites you to enjoy a leisurely stroll through seven unique private

gardens, opened exclusively for visitors on this special day. Located throughout the Brunswick Forest neighborhoods of Park Landing, Parkview, Villamar, Walden, and Cape Fear National, these intimate garden spaces reflect the creativity, personal style, and passion of their owners. From lush blooms and thoughtfully designed landscapes to peaceful natural retreats, each garden offers a glimpse into a world of beauty, inspiration, and tranquility.
Your purchased brochure serves as your admission ticket to all seven gardens. Visit them in any order and at your own pace. Friendly volunteers will be stationed at each garden to welcome you, stamp your brochure (don’t forget to bring it along!), and answer any questions. A map on the back of the brochure will help you plan your route.
Ticket brochures are $15 per person. To purchase tickets, email Frances Lewis at fflewis113@yahoo.com with the subject line “A Garden Stroll”. Tickets may also be purchased at the Brunswick Forest Fitness Center from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM on the following Wednesdays: March 25, April 8, April 22, May 6 and May 20. On the day of A Garden Stroll, tickets are $20 per person and, subject to availability, may be purchased at the garden on Creswell Drive in Cape Fear National (look for the check-in table in front of the house). Payment may be made by cash or check payable to the Brunswick Forest Garden Club.
Be sure to try your luck with the raffle, featuring a variety of exciting prizes. Raffle tickets will be sold on the day of A Garden Stroll at the garden designated in the ticket brochure. Prices are $5 per ticket or $20 for five tickets (cash only).
Proceeds from A Garden Stroll will benefit the Discovery Garden within the Brunswick County Botanical Garden in Bolivia. The garden was designed to provide visitors of all ages (but especially children) with the opportunity to observe various plants, insects, and birds in a gently contained habitat. This experience helps foster a sense of wonder, curiosity, and an understanding of the natural environment and the importance of our role as stewards.
A Garden Stroll is more than a garden tour—it’s a celebration of nature, creativity, and community. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or simply someone who enjoys beauty and inspiration, these gardens promise a delightful experience. So grab your sun hat, bring a camera, and come ready to stroll, discover, and enjoy a truly special day.

HUMPHRIES
The Brunswick Forest Garden Club (BFGC) was established in 2017 for residents of Brunswick Forest who share a love of gardening and a desire to learn more about cultivating plants in southeastern North Carolina. The club brings together neighbors who are passionate about gardens and eager to grow their knowledge — and friendships — along the way.
BFGC is a welcoming and relaxed group that meets monthly to enjoy presentations by knowledgeable speakers on a wide range of topics, including Coastal Plain planting conditions, native plant varieties and habitats, pruning techniques, and creative ways to decorate with plants and garden art. Members also exchange information about local plant sales, gardening resources, notable regional gardens, and special events, and occasionally enjoy field trips together.
Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Brunswick Community College Leland Campus. Annual membership dues are $45. Non-member guests are welcome to attend meetings for $10 per meeting.
If you’re looking to learn, laugh, socialize, and occasionally get your hands a little dirty, we would love to have you join us! For membership information, please contact Bathsheba Flood at bathshebaflood@gmail. com.

BY DOREEN SARGENTE PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THE MORRISON FAMILY
If you’ve spent any time around Brunswick Forest— particularly anywhere near a fitness center parking lot on a bright morning—you may have noticed a friendly pack of cyclists rolling out together, chatting as easily as if they were on a stroll rather than pedaling off for 20 miles. That’s the Brunswick Cyclists, a resident-sponsored group led by Henry “Sandy” Morrison, a man who logs more miles per year than most of us put on our golf carts.
But the group isn’t just about mileage. In fact, Sandy’s wife Linda has what may be the perfect description: a social activity that just happens to be on bikes.
And that’s exactly the vibe Sandy envisioned when he first dreamed up the idea.
Sandy moved to Brunswick Forest with a long-standing love for cycling already in his back pocket. “I’ve been an avid cyclist for years,” he said, “and after moving here and seeing other cyclists around, I thought it might be a nice offering.”
Once he learned about Resident Sponsored Activities, the wheels—literally—started turning. Before long, Brunswick Cyclists came to life, complete with a simple, fitting name that happens to look just right on a jersey.
“I think the name ended up choosing us,” Sandy said with a laugh. “It just fit perfectly on the side panel.”

You won’t find any competitive intensity here. No stopwatch, no peloton drama, no one showing up in aerodynamic helmets that make them look like they’re training for the Tour de France. This club is all about casual riders who enjoy being out together, enjoying the sunshine, scenery, and conversation.
“We usually ride about 20 miles at a casual 10–12 mph pace,” Sandy explained. “The beauty of group riding is the encouragement, safety in numbers, accountability, and of course, the community. The miles melt away when you’re chatting with friends.”
The rides generally start from Hammock or Reflections Fitness Centers, or during the summer, from Brunswick Beer and Cider for their after-work routes—probably one reason those Monday-night rides are particularly popular. A pedal, a pint, and people you enjoy? Hard to beat.
And while the group tends to hover around a dozen riders, the more adventurous “off-campus” rides— Oak Island, Carolina Beach, Lake Waccamaw—can attract 20 or more.
A new season is the perfect time to refresh your home. Brunswick Water Filters deliver whole-home protection—so your water is as pure as spring. Call today. 844-743-7327.
Ask Sandy his favorite place to take riders and he won’t hesitate: Elwell Ferry.
For those who’ve never experienced it, Elwell Ferry is a tiny, cable-guided ferry crossing the Cape Fear River in a rural pocket of Bladen County. It’s one of the few remaining ferries of its kind, and riding it feels like stepping backwards in time. Add in tree-lined roads, quiet farmland, and a pace that encourages you to breathe a little deeper, and you begin to understand why Sandy loves introducing newcomers to the experience.
Other group favorites include Oak Island and Carolina Beach during the quieter off-season months, and Lake Waccamaw with its expansive lakeside views. As Sandy puts it, “We aim to please—everyone likes something different.”
In just a few years, Brunswick Cyclists has created a welcoming community for riders ranging from complete beginners to more seasoned cyclists. Sandy also serves as a ride leader with

Cape Fear Cyclists, giving those who want longer or faster rides an easy pathway to challenge themselves.

Beyond the casual rides, Sandy keeps group members informed about local charity cycling events including the Brunswick Heritage Ride, City to Shore, and the Tour de Blueberry—his personal

favorite. That particular ride supports the Terry Benjey Bicycling Foundation, which funds safety and advocacy initiatives throughout the Cape Fear region.
Sandy also brings that passion for safety home. He recently served on Leland’s Safe Streets for All committee, helping create a comprehensive plan to improve conditions for cyclists, pedestrians, and anyone else sharing the roads.
“It’s nice knowing Brunswick Forest is already a model for safe cycling,” he says. “But there’s always more we can do.”
Outside of the cycling world, Sandy and Linda have a rich story all their own. Married for 42 years, they first met in their church youth group and stayed connected through college and careers—even if their dating life looked a little… unconventional.
At the time, Sandy was a tractor trailer owner-operator, traveling long stretches of highway while Linda was in school. Whenever he knew he’d pass her
college—conveniently located right off a major interstate—he’d drop his trailer at the local truck stop, call her from a payphone, and swing by the dorm.
But not quietly.
“When I pulled in front of the dorm, I’d blow the truck’s airhorn,” Sandy said. “Linda would come out to meet me. Her suitemates knew I was a trucker, but I’m guessing the rest of the dorm didn’t.”
The story still gets a laugh decades later.
After Sandy’s trucking days came a career in customer service management in highly specialized fields—from EPA

protocol gases to powder coatings used in aerospace and automotive industries. While he was quick to say he wasn’t the most technical person in the room, he loved problemsolving and working with customers, and his partnerships with PhD chemists and engineers were a natural fit.
Linda spent her own career working in the business side of hospitals, elder care, and the death-care industry. “I’m not sure what her next industry would have been if she hadn’t retired,” Sandy joked.
They have one son, Adam, who lives in Pennsylvania and prefers cooler weather—a fact his parents still don’t quite understand. He’s an avid ice hockey defenseman, playing in two men’s leagues and embracing cold rinks the way his parents embrace warm beaches.
Sandy and Linda are no strangers to big cycling trips. They’ve completed numerous century rides—including 100-mile days on their tandem bike—and they’ve traveled on cycling adventures throughout the U.S. and across the world. Tasmania is their farthest cycling destination so far, but they’ve also ventured to Iceland and Africa, where they enjoyed safaris, wildlife, and Victoria Falls.
Their travels with their son are full of memories too— especially the years when they rode a three-seat bicycle as a family. They once crossed into Canada on that bike and had their passports stamped at the border station. They even picked up Adam from school on the last day of fifth grade on that same three-seater.
“He was mortified,” Sandy said, “but we thought it was great.”
The Morrisons have lived in The Lakes for almost four years. Raised in Coastal Virginia, they always knew they wanted to retire near the beach. A mailer from Brunswick Forest led to a visit, and from the moment they arrived, they felt they were exactly where they were meant to be.
Because they moved into a newly built neighborhood, making friends was easy—and cycling, pickleball, shag dancing, and even the monthly “Catch Up on the Curve” gatherings helped widen their circle. Linda also serves on the leadership team for a local chapter of Community Bible Study, and the couple remains active in their church.
“We wouldn’t change a thing,” Sandy said. “Meeting new friends and neighbors has been one of the best parts of living here.”
For anyone thinking about joining the Brunswick Cyclists, Sandy has a simple message:
“It really is just like riding a bike. Every time you go, you’ll feel better. From day one, you’re ahead of everyone who stayed home. And I’ve got plenty of success stories from the past three years—come once, and I’ll share one with you. Or better yet, I’ll let the rider tell it themselves.”
Friendly, encouraging, and always ready to share the road, Sandy and the Brunswick Cyclists are rolling proof that fitness, friendship, and fun can all share the same set of wheels.

Have you ever had both a passion and a dream? Have you achieved this by yourself but wished you had help along the way? This is the story of Madge Mateo, founder of Morgan Creek Wildlife Rescue. She has been involved with all types of wildlife since 2008. Raccoons, opossums, squirrels, you name it. If it needed help, Madge was there.

But lately, baby deer have come under her radar. There are many misconceptions regarding fawns. Madge does give a Fawn 101 seminar teaching the general public the do’s and don’ts regarding these charming creatures. Oftentimes people see a fawn and think it’s abandoned. They have good intentions “rescuing” it but don’t realize the mother may be nearby foraging for food. You can imagine Mama returning and finding the baby gone! Other times a fawn or the mother may be injured. Any number of things can happen where a young deer may end up at Morgan Creek Wildlife. With the development of thousands of acres of woodlands into neighborhoods, all wildlife have been displaced. Coyotes running between houses and deer feasting in flower gardens are not nature’s way.
A fawn is indeed a baby who needs to be fed every four hours, just like a human baby. Lots of goat milk powder mixed with water and bottle-fed. When a bit older, chopped up vegetables by the tray load. You can imagine what it’s like feeding several growing foundlings. Hay for bedding needs to be changed frequently, as if for babies in diapers. In the spring after the birthing months, Madge has her hands full and the challenge of caring for so many fawns is overwhelming.
Vivien and Terry Monnie were the first to step in to help bottlefeed. One day there was one, literally the next day there were five fawns. Lately, a group of Brunswick Forest residents have gathered to help and give relief from the care around the clock for these babies. This is a well-organized group who are willing to pitch in whenever needed. The fawns are adorable, but one needs to realize they are wild animals that will be released to be with their herd—living their lives as nature intended.
So many challenges! There are currently only two large “kennels” where the fawns can be housed. Since they are wild animals, medical help is limited, and help from veterinarians is much needed and would be greatly appreciated. In addition, the expense of housing, feeding, and supplies is huge. Thankfully, Morgan Creek Wildlife Rescue is a 501(c)(3) organization allowing tax-deductible monetary contributions and Qualified Charitable contributions from a retirement account.
Volunteering is satisfying, but the reality of dedication is a fact. Social, medical, and other appointments need to revolve around the day and time the volunteer has chosen. These babies need their feedings to survive. We need your help! For more information or to find out how you can help, go to: MorganCreekWildlifeRescue.org
