DUO JOIN THE DAGGERS The Daggers announced the double signing of Charlee Adams and Jaden Brissett before our home match against Wealdstone last weekend.

Adams, who played the full 90 minutes of our 1-0 victory over The Stones, rejoins Dagenham & Redbridge after his release from Barnet, with the 25-year-old hoping to build on the 21 appearances he made for the club during the 2017/18 season. Brissett is an exciting left-winger that joins the club on a short-term contract. The 19-year-old was released by Brentford B during the summer, having scored 15 goals in 24 matches for the clubs' reserve side, and made his debut as a second-half substitute in Tuesdays match away to Woking.

JOE QUIGLEY DEPARTS Joe Quigley cancelled his contract with the club by mutual consent earlier this week. The forward joined the Daggers last summer and made 34 appearances last season, scoring six times.

INFORMATION ON THE DAGGERS CLUBHOUSE Following instructions from The National League and discussions with our Safety Officer and Public Health England, it has been decided that for the continued safety of our supporters, staff and players, that none of our games will be streamed live in the clubhouse for the foreseeable future. The problem for us so far has been getting a consistent team on the pitch for a number of games to get some momentum and for the players to start forming partnerships on the pitch.

In every season Iâ€™ve been a player and manager these periods happen and hopefully for us we get it out of the way early and get our injured players back to help the players we have available and kick on as a group.

But we know internally we need to stick together, keep working hard and believe in our process to get the results we know we can achieve.

Id like to welcome Darren, his staff and players here today. Also there are a few ex daggers in

the Yeovil squad including Quigs who has just left us and we wish them well after today. Yeovil had a great season last year and will undoubtedly be in the promotion shake up at the end of the season. Today will be a good test for our young team against a very experienced side.

As I said above injuries have really hampered us at this early stage of the season and again we will be without a number of key players today. But it gives an opportunity to other players to show there talents and we need players to step up to the plate and perform. On a positive note George Saunders has been back in training this week.

Adam Smith (GK) After a short stint on loan during 19/20, Smith signed for the Glovers on an extended loan deal until the end of the season. Harry Palmer (GK) Harry Palmer signed as competition for Adam Smith ahead of the 2020/21 season after a successful trial period which saw him make a superb save away to Dorchester. Daniel Leadbitter (DEF) The explosive right-back signed for Town on loan from Newport County in September. Leadbitter knows what it takes to gain promotion from the National League, doing so with Bristol Rovers at the first time of asking in the 2014/2015 season. Carl Dickinson (DEF) The former Stoke City graduate joined Yeovil last summer from National League rivals Notts County. Having represented Stoke in the topflight, Dickinson has also had spells with Leeds, Barnsley and Portsmouth on loan before joining Watford for a fee of £250,000 in 2011. Lee Collins (DEF) Captain Collins joined the Glovers from Forest Green Rovers after guiding them to the League Two playoffs in the 18/19 campaign. He has made over 350 appearances in the Football League. Luke Wilkinson (DEF) Wilkinson was Darren Sarll’s first signing having been together at Stevenage previously. Jack Clarke (MID) On loan from Aston Villa, Clarke begins his first loan spell in Somerset having already earnt significant praise from Darren Sarll for his pre-season performances. Matthew Worthington (MID) In his second spell with the club when arriving in January 2019, he signed a two- and half-year deal from AFC Bournemouth. He has also had a spell at Forest Green Rovers on loan. Lawson D’Ath (MID) Also rejoined the club for a second spell last summer signing a two-year deal. He has won promotion at his last 3 clubs, winning the title at Northampton and Luton and gaining promotion with MK Dons. Gabriel Rogers (MID) Signed a professional contract with the club in December 2018, he made his senior debut against Aston Villa in the EFL Cup. Albi Skendi (MID) Signed from Stratford Town after helping them to their highest ever league finish in the club’s history in 2018/19. He has also played in America with Los Angeles Wolfs and Marymount California University.

Charlie Lee (MID) Starting his career at Tottenham, Lee helped Leyton Orient regain their EFL status in the 2018/2019 season. He made 118 appearances under Sarll at Stevenage, as well as three promotions in four years in a spell at Peterborough. He also has played for Walsall and Millwall in his 450 plus EFL appearances. Rhys Murphy (FOR) The 28-year-old scored 28 goals in a superb campaign at Chelmsford City in the National League South. He started out at Arsenal and spent time on loan at Brentford and Preston. Before a season overseas in Holland with Telstar. He returned to England to play for Oldham, before joining Crawley where he scored 9 goals in 15 appearances, AFC Wimbledon winning promotion to League One and Forest Green. All before spells at York,

Dagenham & Redbridge, Torquay and Gillingham, until joining Chelmsford where he starred for the Essex club. Courtney Duffus (FOR) Signed from Oldham in January on deadline day last year for an undisclosed fee, Duffus was at Everton as a teenager and helped the U23’s claim the Premier League Two title before joining Oldham. Joe Quigley (FOR) Former Dagger Quigley joined up with the Glovers earlier this week after leaving Dagenham & Redbridge. The 23-year-old began his career in the Bournemouth Academy, and following a number of loan spells signed for Maidstone in 2018/2019. A move to Bromley followed before another loan spell at Eastbourne Borough, spending last season with the Daggers scoring six times.

The 36-year-old joined Yeovil in June 2019 and has the task of trying to get the Glovers back into the Football League. He has had a 15-year coaching career where he has been at Brentford, Rotherham and Stevenage. He had a 2-year spell as Stevenage first team manager, guiding the club to a 10th place finish in 2016/17 and producing talent such as Ben Willmott and Ben Kennedy. The former earning the club a seven-figure fee when he joined Watford. Watford is where Sarll has been most recently with his role as Head of Academy. DAGGERS.CO.UK

GOOD AFTERNOON FROM THE CHIGWELL CONSTRUCTION STADIUM! We’ve not been playing to the standards that we have come to expect of ourselves as a group, and for that I must apologise. Last Saturday against Wealdstone, I thought we played well and had a number of chances, but we need to be more clinical and take chances when we are on top. Not grabbing the second goal made it a nervy finish towards the end, but we were delighted to pick up our first three points of the season. The only thing that could have made the feeling any better was having the fans cheering us on. We wanted to follow the victory up with another good performance away at Woking, but unfortunately, we were not on our game. We were outfought in the first half and we need to learn to start games better as a team. I thought we were better in the second half, but we created very little and deserved to be on the end of a defeat. 08 THE DAGGER

We’ve been very unlucky with injuries so far and Paul McCallum and Adrian Clifton have added to that. It’s obviously difficult when you’re down so many players but we can’t make excuses, we have 23 players in our squad and with the number of games that we have in quick succession, it’s important to have a good squad to cover for those who get injured, which I believe we do. Yeovil will be a tough test for us this afternoon having finished in the play-offs last season. They’re a hard-working side and we will need to be at the races to battle with them. We want to put right Tuesday’s result and performance by giving you something to cheer about today. Please stick with us and I hope you enjoy the game from wherever you’re watching. ANGELOBALANTA Angelo Balanta made his 50th appearance for the Club in our match away to Woking on Tuesday evening.

The 30-year-old has been an excellent signing since joining the Club from Boreham Wood in October 2018. The Columbian born attacker has proved to be a vital part of the team scoring 17 times in his 50 appearances to date, as well as laying off a number of assists for his teammates in his two years with the Daggers.

Last season the forward played 23 games scoring eight times, and despite missing two months through injury, managed to end the campaign our top scorer in a season that was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After joining in October, Balanta finished the 2018/2019 season having made 24 appearances, scoring seven times, including

DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE WERE DEFEATED 2-0 BY WOKING IN SURREY ON TUESDAY EVENING, WITH INJURIES TO PAUL MCCALLUM AND ADRIAN CLIFTON ADDING TO THE EAST LONDON SIDE'S WOES. The Daggers welcomed back Luke Croll, who came in for the injured Callum Reynolds in defence. Sam Deering came into the starting XI to replace Myles Weston, who also picked up a knock against Wealdstone on Saturday.

Daryl McMahon was forced into an early change at the Laithwaite Stadium, as Paul McCallum pulled up on the halfway line with no Woking player around him. Adrian Clifton was introduced in his place.

The Cards had the better of the play in the opening 15 minutes, with Dave Tarpey having several efforts that either tested Elliot Justham or flashed wide of the post.

With 20 minutes gone on the clock, Woking got the goal that their early dominance deserved, as Jack Cook headed in from a free kick that was whipped in from the edge of the area.

Sam Deering and Adrian Clifton went close with efforts on 24 and 25 minutes respectively as Daggers looked to immediately get back into the contest.

But it went from bad to worse for Dagenham, as Adrian Clifton had to be withdrawn after he went down injured with 29 minutes gone, Darren McQueen replaced him. Two minutes later and Woking added a second. A fierce effort from Malachi Napa

landed at the feet of Justham, with the ball spinning away from the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The second half began with Darren McQueen being taken out by Charlton loanee Ben Dempsey, with both him and Kai Brown going into the book after a scuffle that followed the tackle.

The Daggers improved as they started to move the ball around well, with a number of good moves down the left not coming to fruition. Charlie Cooper was next to try and grab a third for Woking as his fierce effort was changed down by a Daggers man as the Cards continued their threatening play. Kai Brown fired over a minute later before being replaced by Jaden Brissett, who came on to make his Daggers debut.

Justham was called into action once again and did well to tip a free-kick over the crossbar with 70 minutes gone in the match. McQueen then went close after some good play down the left-hand side by the debutant Brissett, who worked hard to keep the ball in play. And the young winger was involved again towards the end of the match, as the Woking defenders did well to crowd the former Brentford B man out as he had sight of the goal in the closing stages.

KAI BROWN This week, we sat down with Ipswich Town loanee, Kai Brown. The forward reflects on his first taste of National League football and being reunited with his former youth team manager.

“I’ve really enjoyed having Daryl as my manager again and I’ve been learning every single day since I’ve been here. I feel like I’m getting better as a player and I’m fitting in with the group. We’re still gelling together as a team and I think with a couple more games under our belt you will start to see massive improvements in the way that we’re playing because we have a great bunch of players here. “He wants me on the front foot as much as possible and encourages me to be positive. Sometimes at Ipswich I’ve been asked to play a much deeper role, but here I’m being encouraged to be direct and get at defenders. It means that I can affect the game a bit more, rather than just hanging out wide and not really impacting the game at all. Added to that, it’s been great to be back with Dagenham.” Brown has played in our last two league matches and has worked in tandem with experienced full-back Elliott Johnson, who he says has been helping him out with the adjustment to the league.

“I’ve been playing with Elliott Johnson behind me and I think that has been so helpful during the two matches that I’ve played so far. He’s been talking to me throughout the matches and telling me when I need to tuck in and help with the defensive duties. It’s great to know that when I’ve got the ball, there’s a player like Elliott around me, either as an option to pass to, or as someone who is bombing on past me.

“When I was at Grays Athletic, there wasn’t as much talking between the players at that level and then when I went to Ipswich, because it’s an U23’s side, unless you have an experienced pro in their who is playing to get fit, then you don’t have any leaders in the team because everyone is the same age roughly.

“That’s what’s so different about being with this group, because you have players all around you who have played hundreds of matches in the Football League and the National League, and that is so beneficial as a younger player who is still getting used to the level.

“The National League is very physical, and I always knew that was going to be the case so it’s not a shock for me. U23’s football is much less demanding, you can dribble past a couple of players with ease, whereas in the National League, you beat one player and then immediately you have another one ready to push you off the ball. “I’ve already learnt that you need to move the ball quickly in this division, otherwise, opposing players will easily win tackles. You’ve got strong, experienced pros at this level, whereas in the 23’s it’s all still very raw.”

The 19-year-old joined on loan from Ipswich with defender Bailey Clements, and Brown believes that has helped with the transition from U23’s to mens football. “I’ve known Bailey since I first joined Ipswich and I feel like being with him here at the Daggers has helped me a lot because although I’m from this area, it’s different coming into a new group of players and especially a professional environment. I knew a couple of the players before I came but I don’t think any of them really knew me. So, it’s been great being with Bailey I’ve constantly had someone I know with me,” he said. The forward also took the time to reflect on our start to the season and explains that although our start has been poor, we need to put those behind us and concentrate on improving, starting with today against Yeovil Town. “I’ve really enjoyed playing in both of the games that I’ve played, but obviously the win was so much better than the loss to Woking. But even from that defeat, I’m constantly learning things and getting better as a player. The game against Wealdstone was brilliant because we got the win and it was really good to experience that with the boys. DAGENHAM AND REDBRIDGE CLAIMED THEIR FIRST POINTS OF THE 2020/21 VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE SEASON AS ANGELO BALANTA’S 65TH MINUTE STRIKE PROVED THE DIFFERENCE IN A HARD-FOUGHT CLASH WITH WEALDSTONE AT THE CHIGWELL CONSTRUCTION STADIUM.

Both sides started quickly and exchanged early blows under a bright evening sky in east London.

First, Charlee Adams, making his second debut for the club, fired wide from distance before a pair of Wealdstone shots didn’t trouble Elliot Justham in the Dagenham goal. Angelo Balanta had the hosts’ first clearcut sight at goal in the 7th minute when played through on the side of the box, but his lob just wouldn’t drop underneath the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten.

The early barrage of chances didn’t stop there as Balanta had another good opportunity moments after his first, but fired right at the keeper from a tight angle. Andrew Eleftheriou and Mitch Brundle each then tried their luck from distance as an action-packed opening quarter of an hour somehow remained goalless.

Dagenham were nearly gifted the opening goal after 20 minutes when Charlie Wakefield made a mess of an attempted clearance and gave the ball to Balanta 12 yards from goal. Potentially as surprised as everyone else, the attacker snatched at his shot and hit it right at Isted. Daryl McMahon’s team continued to control much of the game but struggled to create anything remotely clear-cut as the

rest of the first half failed to live up to the fervent opening period.

Level at the break, Dagenham made their first change of the evening bringing on Will Wright for Callum Reynolds.

Dagenham had to stay alert early on in the second half to clear a dangerous ball from Dennon Lewis as Wealdstone began on the front foot. McCallum and Brown nearly linked up 10 minutes after the restart, but Isted was quick off his line to claim it ahead of the Daggers’ attacker.

Despite the slow start to the second half, Dagenham finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute. Kai Brown won the ball back on the right side of the pitch before feeding McCallum who exchanged passes with Balanta, and when the ball broke to Dagenham’s number 10 on his left foot he made no mistake, firing into the far corner. Dagenham continued to push for a second in the closing stages of the match and Brundle saw a rasping drive saved by Isted with six minutes left to play.

Justham, solid throughout, had to be at his very best to preserve Dagenham’s lead with virtually the last kick of the match as he clawed out a goal-bound header to help McMahon’s side earn a big victory.

ON THE WAY BACK FROM WOKING, I WAS THINKING, HAVE I EVER LOST TWO PLAYERS IN THE SAME HALF, THEN HAVE I EVER HAD TWO STRIKERS GO OFF IN THE SAME HALF. I can’t recall in the 20 years that I have been doing this job that we have ever had that. Is it bad luck? At the moment, it looks that way with the way things are going. Paul McCallum and Adrian Clifton are both going to have MRI scans which we will hopefully know the results of very early next week. For Paul, it’s calf strain that he has got. He tried to push off to meet Elliot Justham’s ball and he felt it straight away. The scan will show what the degree of strain that is. With Adrian, it looks more serious. Watching the video back on Tuesday night and on Wednesday, he seems to have planted his foot very awkwardly and looks to have put all his weight through it as well. It is difficult to say for definite what he has done at the 32 THE DAGGER

moment, but he has injured his lateral ligament, which is the outside ligament of his knee. That is for definite, but to what degree we don’t know. The scan will show that and will show if there is any other injury to the knee itself. I saw him Thursday for the first time since the injury as he was able to drive and his knee was not as bad as I thought it would be which is good news, there was very little fluid on it but he is very tender on the outside of his knee. Paul came off with cramp on Saturday, didn’t come in on Sunday and reported for training as normal on Monday, he did not report any problems after training at all and then this happened. I would be surprised if

this was something to do with it, because it was symptoms that he had never portrayed in the two days after that. Callum Reynolds came off on Saturday with a back issue, specifically the bottom of his spine. At the moment he is very tender, and he has said towards the end of the first half he has gone to clear the ball and he felt something in his back. He was getting pain going into his hamstring and his groin which have now subsided, but it is very isolated in the lower half of his back. He is doing lots of rehab work trying to get more stable in and around his glutes and his lower back. He is improving and it is a case of monitoring him closely, seeing how he goes, increasing his workload

day by day as well and checking how he is progressing from that. Myles felt his hamstring slightly after going for a ball, so we brought him off straight away. It is back related instead of pure hamstring. The reason for this is because of the range of movement he has, the power in his hamstring he has got, whereas if he had a muscular issue you would expect both of them to be down and for him to feel discomfort on that which is not the case. We have been introducing the range of work for his hamstring but also some back exercises for him as well. Dean Rance, who came off in the defeat to Barnet, he also had a back issue, but he’s massively improved over time. As a group of staff, we’ve been asking ourselves why these back injuries have been occurring and there’s not one common cause as to what we can pinpoint it down to. We’re pushing Dean on with exercise for his back more predominantly to make him more stable. When we examined a day or two after the game, his glutes weren’t really working to stabilise his pelvic area. More than likely what’s happen is that his glutes aren’t working as they should do, so his hamstrings are overcompensating for that and so they’ve been fatiguing. At the moment he’s back running and working hard to get back out there. George Saunders has worked really hard since picking up his injury and is back in full-time training. We’ve had the GPS equipment on him for the last four days and his workloads and his numbers that are being recorded and are equal to those that we would expect to see in training, which is fantastic. We will be monitoring him over the next week mainly because he’s come in from lower league football where the training isn’t as frequent, just to make sure he doesn’t injure himself in another form, which can quite easily happen coming back from an injury. Harry Phipps is doing okay. We went up to see the consultant, Mr Spalding

who operated on Harold Odametey last year. We did this because the MRI showed that it was a complicated injury, but the good news out of that is that it doesn’t look as complicated as it was initially reported. He’s going to have his operation next week, so at the moment he is self-isolating at home and will be having a COVID test three days before, as per the current guidelines. He will have his operation and then have three weeks of recovery at home and then we will look to get him back in. We know that he won’t play this season, but it’s now about getting him ready for next season.

Since my last notes, the Goodies have been busy once again. For those who missed my last notes, Charlie is our club shop manager, Jack is our Performance Analyst and George is all things media. The three boys have been sharing an office for the last few weeks and they’ve been having some very good meetings together. I went

into the office the other day and for some reason there is a framed photo of somebody on one of their desks which has lots of stickers on it. It wasn’t a picture of themselves and the notes say I Love You and ‘Why didn’t you marry me?’ Someone is really pulling someone’s leg a little bit and I hope they don’t get too upset.

The Doc has pulled his calf, so he wasn’t able to run on the other day. He was due in to be in for treatment on Sunday, but he didn’t turn up so he will be getting fined for that. His boy is looking for a job now, but he’s still living in the Docs house, specifically in the west wing, he is living off his dads’ earnings so to speak. I will keep you updated on all of the Docs dealings as well as keeping a close eye on the Goodies. HA'WAY THE LADS Up The Daggers John DAGGERS.CO.UK

The Dagenham and Redbridge FC Community Trust provides or facilitates activities and opportunities for local people. Over the last couple of years this has included a wide variety of events, clubs, sessions, experiences, workshops, meetings and more. In local schools, Trust coaches regularly ran breakfast, lunchtime and after school clubs including football, basketball, multisports, etc. The Trust arranged for First team players to visit schools to talk to students, whilst encouraging schools to send groups of students to the Club to not only watch National League fixtures, but tour the ground and dressing rooms, and participate in ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ and other similar workshops. The children were encouraged to send in their entries for the front cover of the ‘Daggers Against Racism’ and Daggers Celebrate Diversity’ Days match programmes. With the support of the Premier League Charitable Fund, the Trust has regularly held free weekly PL Kicks football sessions for young people aged between 8 and 18. Only this August the PLCF allowed the Trust to use some of its funding to run two weeks of free Multisport Activities at May and Bakers.

The Trust is a member of London United, where most of London’s professional Football Clubs are represented and through this affiliation the Trust received funding from the London Marathon Charitable Fund this year to operate sessions for young girls, with the aim of getting them active and into regular exercise. A project at the Riverside School restarted only last Friday. The National League Trust has funded several different projects which has led to the creation of the Dagenham & Redbridge FC Women and Girls teams who play in the Essex County Girls League. Additional activities have included an inter schools Mini World Cup and Olympic Multisports Festival, Coats for Goalposts including the Mini Kickers project and Allstars Cricket, the hosting of a variety of activities in the Clubhouse including carers workshops and a healthy lifestyles programme. Together with the Wembley Trust, the NLT funded a Women and Girls project which involved a group of mainly mothers and one grandmother at Dagenham Park School during the Winter months last year. These are just a few of the many activities provided by the Trust in recent years. The current Coronavirus pandemic saw the Trust shut down from midMarch until August. Some activities are coming back on stream, but it is difficult to predict when we will return

to a level of normality and we are looking for new opportunities to help the local community. The Trust is a registered charity which is underwritten by but separate from the Club. It relies heavily upon external funding to continue to operate. As the Trust searches to find new and additional funders during these strange times, you can help us.
