There were a lot of positives to take out of the game. It was a good performance from start to finish, the negative is obviously the result. We don’t take previous results too harshly – we’ve shown that over the last few weeks, we’re developing into a very good side that is constantly challenging the teams at the top of the table and we’re giving them good games. We’ve shown where we want to be in the long term but I know how important it is to start turning these performances into wins. On Torquay…

It’ll be a tough game this afternoon. They’re third in the league for a reason, with a very experienced manager, with very good players. They’ve been toward the top of the league large parts of the season so we know it’ll be tough, but right now we feel like we can give anyone a game, so we look forward to it. On our 1-0 win over Torquay earlier this season…

We played really well that day. We had 10 men for a good 55 minutes which always changes the face of a game. In that first period when Macca scored to put us one up, we hit the post and

should’ve gone two up, so I believe we were definitely the better team certainly in that first half. We went down to 10 men and it was a bit of attack vs defence – Torquay were enjoying a lot of the ball, but we defended really well. On the ambition of the team…

We want to be a team that are challenging at the top of the table. When I came into the club a year ago, that was the ambition. We want to be pushing towards the top of the table and we have 15 games to go now where we can pick up as many points as possible and get as close as we can to where we want to be, starting tonight against Torquay. TORQUAY UNITED THEGULLSI MEET THE TEAM KYLE CAMERON

Gary JOHNSON – Manager There was surprise and delight in equal measure amongst United’s fan base at the appointment of Gary Johnson’s in September 2018, and his impact was immediate. Three wins and three draws preceded a record-breaking ten match winning streak, which lifted the club up from 14th into 1st place. Under his guidance they remained there for the majority of the season, before finally clinching the National League South title, and with-it promotion, in April 2019. Shaun MACDONALD 1 Shaun MacDonald emerged from the shadows to become one of the key members of United’s 2018/19 titlewinning squad. Following spells with Gateshead and Blyth Spartans, MacDonald joined the club in July 2018 following a successful post-season trial. After sharing the ‘keeping duties during the opening months of the campaign, MacDonald would go on to become the club’s undisputed first-choice keeper. Shaun was recognised for his brilliance during the season by being named as the National League South’s ‘Player of the Month’ for December 2018. 06 THE DAGGER

Ben WYNTER 2 Defender Ben Wynter went from strength to strength during the victorious 2018/19 campaign, as he established himself as one of key components of United’s backline. Wynter, 20, joined the club after spending 2017/18 with National League side, Bromley. He spent his youth career at Crystal Palace, and he signed his first pro contract with the Eagles in 2016. Wynter has primarily played as a right-back but can also play at centre-back. After notching his first goal for the club during the 4-0 home win over Slough Town in January, Ben secured his part in Yellow Army folklore by scoring the crucial stoppage-time leveller in the 3-3 draw away to title rivals Woking in April 2019. Kyle CAMERON 4 After joining the club in July 2018, Kyle Cameron would go on to become one of the division’s star performers as United swept towards the 2018/19 National league South title. A natural left-footer, Kyle put in a number of commanding displays throughout the season and notched his first goal for the club with a towering header in the vital 1-0 away win at Concord Rangers in March 2019. Kyle was rewarded for a fantastic campaign by being named in the 2018/19 National League South ‘Team of the Season’.

Gary WARREN 6 Gary produced a number of impressive displays on loan from near neighbours Exeter City earlier this year, prior to rejoining Gary Johnson’s side in the summer of 2020. Following Bath’s dissolution in 2009, Gary made the move to Welsh side Newport County, where his committed displays immediately endeared him to The Exiles’ faithful, as the club stormed to the National League South in his first season. His selection as County skipper was no surprise to anybody that had seen his performances in an Amber shirt, and nor was the clamour for his services following the expiry of his contract following three years at the club. Scottish side Caledonian Thistle secured his signature, before Gary returned to his Westcountry roots to sign for Yeovil Town in the pre-season of 2018. Despite a difficult season for The Glovers, his leadership skills caught the attention of fellow League Two side Exeter, who were quick to swoop for the experienced centreback the following summer. Connor LEMONHEIGH-EVANS 7 Connor, 22, first joined TUFC on loan from Championship side Bristol City in January 2018, before returning for a second loan spell in September 2018. After playing a starring role as United marched towards the 2018/19 National League South title, the Yellow Army were delighted when it

was announced Connor would be coming back to Plainmoor for a third time in August 2019. Danny WRIGHT 9 Plainmoor regulars have long-admired the Norwich-born centre forward’s performances for a number of opposition sides over the past decade. Stints at the top tier of non-league football with Cambridge, Wrexham, Forest Green, Gateshead and Kidderminster had seen Danny earn himself a reputation as one of the most feared strikers at that level, however the Football League remained uncharted waters, until his move to Johnson’s Cheltenham saw the Gloucestershire outfit reclaim their League Two status at the first time of asking. A move back into the National League with an ambitious Solihull Moors side in 2018 would once again see the best brought out in player and team, with another doublefigure tally seeing Tim Flowers’ men go within touching distance of securing promotion. Danny jumped at the chance of renewing his successful partnership his former Cheltenham boss – with a Football League return very much on the agenda for all concerned. Armani LITTLE 10 Midfielder Armani Little agreed a deal with the club in May 2019, following an outstanding season on loan at United’s National League South title rivals, Woking. Little began his career at Premier League club Southampton and made a handful of appearances in the Checkatrade Trophy for the club, prior to joining League One side

Oxford in the summer of 2018. It was during two loan spells at Woking though, that Armani really began to make his mark, as his cultured performances in the Cardinals’ engine room helped to steer his club towards promotion. Jake ANDREWS 11 Jake Andrews delighted the Yellow Army by agreeing a permanent deal with the club in June 2019, following a tremendous spell on loan during 2018/19. After signing for the Gulls in August 2018, United’s titlewinning campaign saw Andrews’ career reach new heights, with his 32 appearances, 12 goals and numerous assists playing a huge part in helping the club secure a return to the National League at the first attempt. Adam RANDELL 12 Midfielder Randell, also 20 years old, was a regular member of Argyle’s squad last season, making 8 appearances in all competitions as Ryan Lowe’s Pilgrims secured an instant return to League One. Matt BUSE 15 Joined TUFC in the summer of 2019. He impressed in a number of friendlies to earn himself a contract. He can play in a number of positions and provides much needed flexibility within United’s squad. Sam SHERRING 16 Having risen through the ranks at the Cherries, defender Sherring, 20, also enjoyed a highly impressive spell at Weymouth in 2018/19, making 37 league and cup appearances as they were crowned champions of the Southern League.

Olaf KOSZELA 18 Olaf Koszela signed his first professional contract following his 17th birthday at the end of March 2019. A hugely prolific scorer for the club’s Under-18 team, Koszela made a number of impressive performances towards the end of United’s 2018/19 title-winning campaign, culminating in scoring his first senior goal against Chippenham Town just a month after turning pro. Scott BODEN 19 Began his career with hometown club Sheffield United, before arriving for the first of two spells with The Spireites in the summer of 2008. Boden would remain with the then-League 2 club for five years, during which time he made over a century of appearances for them, before stints with Macclesfield Town, FC Halifax Town, Newport County and Inverness Caledonian Thistle followed. His return south of the border saw Wrexham, Gateshead and Chesterfield – once more – benefit from his undoubted ability and goals, with his second spell at the Proact Stadium seeing Scott notch 23 goals in just 58 league appearances. Having arrived at Plainmoor in February 2021, manager Gary Johnson was understandably delighted to secure the services of a player who has a proven goalscoring record in both this division, and the one above. Aaron NEMANE 23 Pacey French-born wide man Nemane, 22, left Premier League giants Manchester City in the summer of 2019, having gained notable experience across Europe during loan spells at Glasgow Rangers, Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles and Tubize in Belgium.

KEYMAN ASA HALL Midfielder Asa Hall became the first United captain in over 90 years to lift a championship trophy, following the 2018/19 National League South title success. Hall brings a wealth of experience to the squad having made over 300 first team appearances turning out for teams such as Luton Town, Oxford United, Shrewsbury Town and Cheltenham Town. United’s captain will now be hoping that history repeats itself once again as he leads his team back into the National League in 2020/21. DAGGERS.CO.UK

Billy WATERS 25 Having begun his career at Crewe Alexandra, a successful trial with Town paid huge dividends for both the team and individual, as Waters notched 11 goals as The Robins marched towards the 2015/16 National League title. Billy went on to enjoy an even better season in the division above the following season, with his 16 goals earning him Cheltenham’s Player of the Season award, prior to his move to Northampton later that summer. Subsequent loan spells at Cambridge United, Cheltenham again and Newport have followed, however United’s boss is now looking forward to seeing the player display his talents in a yellow shirt. Ryan LAW 27 Left-back Ryan Law joined the club on loan from Plymouth Argyle in March 2021. Having progressed through Argyle’s academy, Ryan has gone on to make five appearances in all competitions for The Pilgrims, as well as gaining further firstteam experience at Gloucester, Truro and Chippenham. The arrival of Law, 21, is a notable boost for The Gulls, and manager Gary Johnson is understandably delighted to have him on board.

Joe LEWIS 31 Joe Lewis, 21, returned to Plainmoor on a permanent basis in January 2021, folowing an impressive loan spell with The Gulls in 2019/20, making 28 appearances before the National League campaign was curtailed early in March. During his previous spell, Joe showed himself to be equally adept in a number of positions, and his arrival provides manager Gary Johnson with more welcome selection options, as United strive to extend their superb table-topping form throughout the course of 2020/21. Max SHEAF 32 Sheaf, 20, joins after impressing manager Gary Johnson during his loan spell with Cheltenham Town last season. Having already made a number of appearances for parent club Hull City, Max provides further options to United’s midfield and is equally adept in playing in a number of positions. Lucas COVOLAN 33 Goalkeeper Lucas Covolan Cavagnari joined United in May 2019, following a brief trial with the club midway through the previous season. Capped by Brazil at U20 level, Cavagnari began his career with

Brazilian giants Vasco da Gama, and played for a number of other clubs in his homeland prior to joining English non-league side Whitehawk. Impressive spells at Lewes and Worthing followed, which alerted the Gulls’ management to his potential. Ben WHITFIELD 34 Whitfield, 23, signed a permanent dal with The Gulls following a productive spell with Port Vale last season, making 33 appearances and scoring 4 goals. Whitfield’s chance to impress came quicker than expected, as he entered the fray on 34 minutes following an injury to Armani Little. The ex-Port Vale winger took full advantage of the opportunity though, by netting United’s 79th minute equaliser. Josh UMERAH 35 Catford-born frontman Umerah, 23, joins The Gulls following a spell with divisional rivals Ebbsfleet United last season. Having come through the ranks at Charlton Athletic, loan stints with Kilmarnock and Wycombe preceded two seasons of National League action, initially with another temporary spell at Boreham Wood, before Josh signed a permanent deal with Ebbsfleet last summer.

GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE, I HOPE YOU ENJOY THE GAME TODAY, AND HOPEFULLY WE CAN PUT ANOTHER SHIFT IN AND GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS! After such a positive performance it was disappointing to not have got something from the game on Tuesday night, especially after creating so many good chances in the first half. It probably shows why Hartlepool are 2nd and we are where we are at the moment though, as we more than matched them overall but as you see in the first half they created one small chance and took it which changes the game. If we want to be competing at the top of this league we know we need to improve in both boxes. Elliot (Justham) is one of, if not the best keepers in this league. He has come up with important saves all season which are worth just as much as scoring at times. We want to protect him as much as possible as a team so that he isn’t having to make too many saves but we know if called upon it is his job and one he does excellently. He had a bit more to do than we would have liked in the second half, but we were chasing the game which was why it was a bit more open at the back. At the time of writing we are not sure if I’m going to be available for today’s game. It was my groin that I felt quite early on in the first half and we managed to get through until half time, but we are doing everything we can to ensure I am available. If I'm not, we have players coming back and it’s an opportunity for other boys to step in and drive us towards getting those 3 points. 10 THE DAGGER

Today's opponents Torquay started the season flying. Obviously they were never going to be able to sustain that throughout the season and were always going to have a small blip, it seems they have had that and are starting to find a little bit of consistency again now. We’ve seen after Tuesday though that we are more than capable of competing with any team in this league. Like with Hartlepool, the pressure is on them to keep winning and stay with Sutton, but we will just concentrate on ourselves as we have done so far, and we can take confidence from our performance Tuesday to ensure we get the 3 points. You can’t look too much into past performances, so our 1-0 win over them back in December isn't too important. Both clubs are in completely different places to when we met then. We are a different proposition all together as we have seen the last couple of months and we are improving every week. With that said, every game comes with different challenges and we have to approach it with the same concentration and commitment as you can never take your foot off the pedal in this league. Again, we hope to see you all back at the stadium as soon as it's safe to do so, and I hope you enjoy today's game.

Luke Armstrong’s effort late in the first half inflicted a first loss in six on the hosts as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. Daryl McMahon’s side started the game strongly, as Scott Wilson, Mo Sagaf, and Angelo Balanta all created good chances to give the hosts the lead. Minutes before the half time break, the Daggers found themselves a goal down, following Luke Armstrong’s free header from the centre of the box. Elliot Justham’s heroics throughout the second period kept the hosts’ hopes of claiming something from the game alive, as the shot-stopper continued to frustrate the Pools. But with the Monkey Hangers standing tall to everything thrown at them, the Daggers were left to rue their missed chances, as they suffered their first defeat since February. Despite being under the cosh early on, the Daggers had the first real opportunity to take the lead after only three minutes, when Wilson headed Myles Weston’s pin-point cross over the crossbar from the centre of the box. The Pools, who are fighting tabletopping Sutton United for the National League title, were looking to lay a marker down against the in-form Daggers, as Mark Shelton’s

dangerous cross from the right-hand side in the eighth minute curled just beyond the reach of Armstrong. With 16 minutes on the clock, the hosts were able to make the Hartlepool defence sweat once again, as Sagaf’s pass cut the visiting defence in half to feed Wilson through on goal, only for Ben Killip to rush off his line and eliminate the danger. Dagenham were looking threatening every time they moved the ball down the pitch. With Weston’s cross finding Sagaf in the centre of the box, the midfielder’s goal bound effort forced a desperate block from a defender. Seconds later, from the resulting corner, the Daggers were starting to wonder how they had not taken the lead, as Balanta rose highest to get his head to the ball, only to see it drift millimetres wide of Killip’s right-hand post. The second-placed Pools were rocking and from a set piece of their own, they almost got caught on the break. In the 33rd minute, after Elliot Justham comfortably collected the corner, he was quick to get the ball back up the other end of the pitch. Following a brilliant ball from Balanta, Wilson unleashed a shot from just inside the box, forcing Killip into a smart save. Entering the final five minutes of the first half, Dave Challinor’s side almost capitalised on a fortunate deflection, handing Rhys Oates the chance to feed strike partner Armstrong the ball just outside the six-yard box, but an outstanding sliding challenge from a Daggers’ defender directed the ball behind for a corner. However, from the resulting set piece, the visitors took the lead against the run of play, as Armstrong was afforded too much space in the penalty area, allowing the attacker a free header at goal, one which Justham was unable to keep out. On the stroke of half time, the Pools’ lead could have been doubled, as another set piece seemed

to catch the Daggers cold. Lying in wait at the far post, Gary Liddle suddenly found the ball at his feet before the experienced midfielder rattled the frame of the goal with his closerange shot. The hosts were slow to get going in the second half and after only three minutes, Hartlepool almost took advantage. Having broken up a Dagenham attack, the Pools’ flooded forward, giving the in-form Armstrong time and space to shoot on goal, only to draw a tremendous save from Justham, who then parried the Salford City loanee’s follow up effort away from danger. Coming on in place of Daggers captain Dean Rance after the restart, the returning Paul McCallum was looking to hit the ground running. In the 53rd minute, after controlling Will Wright’s strong pass, the striker took a touch and turned on the spot, before blazing his effort clear of the crossbar. However, Hartlepool were managing the game well with 25 minutes left to play, as McMahon’s side found it challenging to maintain the same level of intensity that saw them dominating proceedings in the first half. Despite being on the back foot, Dagenham looked to wrestle control of the game from the visitors. In the 70th minute, Pools’ ‘keeper Killip dealt well with a dangerous McCallum header, getting down low to prevent the back post attempt from sneaking over the line. McMahon’s Dagenham side were struggling to break down the Monkey Hangers’ rock-solid back line, forcing the hosts into long range efforts. With ten minutes left to play, Weston was the latest to try his luck from distance, following a brilliant move from Sagaf and Wright, only to hit his shot over the bar. The Daggers huffed and puffed as they looked to extend their unbeaten run, but as time ran out in the game, they were unable to find a way through against their title-chasing opponents, falling to their first defeat in a month.

Football can be a cruel sport sometimes. On occasion, you can be playing the better football, create the most clear-cut chances, dictate the pace of the game and still come away empty handed.

Much of this can be said about the Daggers after Tuesday evening’s 1-0 home defeat to promotionchasing Hartlepool United, a game which could have ended very differently had chances been taken, especially in the first half. But despite a setback which put an end to the club’s unbeaten run, Dagenham shotstopper Elliot Justham believes there are plenty of positives to take out of that game.

“Obviously, we are disappointed with the defeat and it was a poor goal for us to concede, coming from our freekick,” he admitted.

“We don’t want to lose but we have got to take the positives out of it. I thought our performance once again was excellent, but we just could not get that goal to go ahead. The worrying thing would be if we were not creating the chances.

“We have the quality on the pitch, and I believe it is only a matter of time. We have got to try and take the positives out of that loss and move on to Torquay this afternoon.

“To be fair, we almost conceded another one just after the first but thankfully, only one went in.

“It was a bit open in the second half at times, but we were trying to get back into the game. I thought we had more possession in the second half and controlled the ball more. “Certainly, more positives than negatives after the Hartlepool game.”

Since moving to the Chigwell Construction Stadium from Luton Town in 2016, Justham has continued to prove time and time again that he is in the conversation for being one of the National League’s best ‘keepers. This season in particular has seen the Daggers number one put in a series of fine performances, most notably against the Monkey Hangers on Tuesday evening, pulling off a number of fine saves to give his side a fighting chance. But those who know Elliot will not be surprised to hear that despite being happy with his personal form, the overall success of the team outweighs everything else.

“The team comes first,” he proudly boasted.

“I have had a few saves to make, and I am grateful they stayed out, including the fortunate ones that came off the post. But at the end of the day, I would rather us win and have nothing to do, which we did not have on Tuesday. “All I can do is try and stay in form and try to keep positive.”

The midweek defeat to the Pools also saw new signing Mauro Vilhete make his first start for Dagenham, having joined the club at the beginning of the month following a spell with Wingate & Finchley.

Playing 75 minutes before being replaced by Saidou Khan, the former Barnet Academy product has impressed fans and teammates alike, something which has not surprised Justham in the slightest.

“I remember playing against Mauro loads of times when he was at Barnet and he has always been a threat. He has come in and been a breath of fresh air,” said Justham.

“That being said, I think that everyone in midfield played well on Tuesday. We have got Angelo who can handle the ball unbelievably well, so having players like him, Mauro, Dean Rance, Mo Sagaf and Matt Robinson leaves us in a very good place.” With the possibility of sneaking into the play-off places come the end of the season still realistic, and with 14 games left to play, the Daggers will be looking to put their best foot forward, beginning with the visit of titlechasing Torquay United. Despite the Gulls form stuttering as of late, with Gary Johnson’s side losing their grip on the summit of the National League, Justham was quick to point out just how much of a challenge he and his teammates are to face this weekend.

“It is coming thick and fast so we have got to dust ourselves down, recover well and then prepare for Torquay, which will be another hard game,” he admitted.

“They are flying in the league, and we went there earlier in the season and got a win, but it was a really tough game. That being said, we have to take the recent positives and move onto today’s game.”
