DARYL McMAHON Good evening everyone from the Chigwell Construction Stadium. I hope you are all keeping safe and well. I would like to wish a warm welcome to Matt Gray, his staff and his squad ahead of tonight’s game. On the past week

I think it has been really good. Leading into Bromley, we obviously had four training days and leading into tonight, we will have had another four training days. I think it has been great to get on the training ground and work on some stuff, which I feel like we needed to do.

I think the training ground has been a good place. It has been buzzing, it has been lively, and it has been competitive. We look forward now to this game before we obviously go into an eightweek period of games on Saturday and Tuesday.

On tonight’s game

I am looking forward to it. We know it will be a difficult game as Sutton are having a great season. We have obviously played against them twice at their place this year, both of which were physically difficult games. They are having a terrific season, but it is a game that I am looking forward to. It is a good challenge for us and hopefully we can hopefully build on last Tuesday. Across the season, seeing where Sutton are in the division, I think they have had a great season and we will just look to focus on ourselves as we

know we are coming up against a difficult team. As I have said, they are a physically strong team, and we will have to match that for sure to get anything out of the game.

Without being disrespectful to Bromley, I think it is possibly similar, but I think Sutton have proven across the season to be one of the best teams in the division, if not the best team.

I think they are only a couple of points behind Torquay United with several games in hand. They are a team that I think have got really hungry young players aligned with some very experienced players with good attitudes and good mentalities. On squad availability

Every game in the division is tough. It is about making sure you turn up and do the basics well as a minimum in every game, then you will have an opportunity to win.

We know we have got quality in the squad and we should have a couple back from injury. Hopefully, moving forward into the next batch of games, we have got people back on the pitch, getting some fitness into them.

JON BARDEN (2) Joined the club in February 2019 as a midfield player, although he has capably filled the right back position since midway through last season. He began his career with the Watford academy but has spent the majority of his career abroad, playing in Iceland, Canada and the USA, most recently with St Louis.

MATT GRAY Appointed to his first managerial role at the beginning of May 2019 following the resignation of Paul Doswell, having originally joined the coaching staff the previous December. He previously had spells as assistant manager at Eastleigh, Aldershot and Crawley, while as a player he began his career with Tottenham and played for Cardiff, Hayes and Havant & Waterlooville before being forced to retire early through injury. JORDAN ADEBAYO-SMITH (20) Winger signed at the end of November after being released by Lincoln earlier this season. During his two years with Lincoln, he had loan spells with Grantham, Boston and Gainsborough.

HARRY BEAUTYMAN (10) Attacking midfield player who re-joined Sutton in January 2018 from Stevenage, he originally joined U’s in summer 2011 after being released by Leyton Orient, where he had been reserve team captain, and went on to score 24 goals in 105 games over the next two seasons, winning the Supporters’ Club Player of the Year award in his first season and earning recognition at England C level. He joined Welling in 2013 and subsequently earned a move into the Football League with Peterborough the following year. He spent the 2016-17 campaign with Northampton before joining Stevenage at the start of the following season. He made his 200th appearance for Sutton last season, when his seventeen goals from midfield earned him a clean sweep of the club player of the year awards and inclusion in the National League

DAVID AJIBOYE (7) Signed in May 2019 having finished the previous season as leading scorer for Worthing, scoring sixteen goals in the Isthmian League. An exciting striker or winger whose pace is a threat to any team, he played at Under 23 level for Brighton and Millwall before joining Worthing at the start of the 2018-19 season. 06 THE DAGGER

DEAN BOUZANIS (1) Goalkeeper signed in the summer having played for Melbourne City in his native Australia for the last four years. After playing junior football in Australia, he joined Liverpool and played for their Under 18 and reserve sides, and also had a loan spell with Accrington Stanley before joining Oldham, where he spent two seasons and played for the Latics in their 3-2 FA Cup defeat of Liverpool in January 2013. After a brief spell with Greek club Aris, he returned to Australia and his home city club of Western Sydney Wanderers before joining Melbourne City in 2016. He has represented Australia at Under 17, Under 20 and Under 23 level, and also Greece, who he is eligible to play for through his parents, at Under 19 level. RHYS BROWNE (27) A youth player with Norwich and Charlton before joining Aldershot, where he scored the goal that knocked U’s out of the FA Cup in 2015, and subsequently played in the Football League for Grimsby, Yeovil and last season, Port Vale. He has most recently had a brief spell at Wealdstone before joining Sutton in January and has represented Antigua & Barbuda on ten occasions.

OMAR BUGIEL (9) Striker signed in June 2019 having spent the previous season and a half with Bromley, scoring for them in the FA Trophy final in 2018. Born in Germany he played for 1860 Munich at youth level before moving to England, playing for Selsey, Burgess Hill and Bognor before joining Worthing in January 2014. His form over the next three seasons, scoring nearly 50 goals in around 120 games, earned him a move to Forest Green in February 2017, a month after impressing for Worthing against U’s in the FA Trophy. He helped Forest Green to promotion in the National League play-offs and played in the Football League before joining Bromley during the 2018-19 season. Eligible through his father to play for Lebanon, he has seven caps to his name and one goal. FILIP CHALUPNICZAK (32) Young goalkeeper signed this season as cover. He most recently played for Hanwell Town. KENNY DAVIS (8) In his fourth season with the club, he passed the 100 appearance mark last season. A midfielder who was signed after a season with Boreham Wood, but was previously with Braintree for six seasons, winning the Conference South championship in 2011 and then captaining the Essex side at National

League level, leading them to the playoff semi finals in the 2015-16 season and scoring the only goal of their first leg win at Grimsby. CRAIG DUNDAS (14) Powerfully built player at home in midfield or attack and who is also the club’s fitness coach, he returned to the playing squad at the start of last season after a spell at Hampton & Richmond. First signed from Carshalton in November 2007, having previously played for Dulwich and Croydon, he ended that season being voted Player of the Year by the Football Club and the supporters. After a season with Hampton, he re-joined in 2010 and has since become a hugely popular clubman who is one of only five players in the club’s history to have completed the double of 500 appearances and 100 goals, reaching his centenary of goals in September 2017 and making his 550th appearance on the first day of this season. He is now fifth in the club's alltime appearance records. He has won the Club Player of the Year on two further occasions as well as the Players’ Player of the Year three times and the supporters’ award once and was also named in the National League South team of the season five seasons ago. BEN GOODLIFFE (5) Centre back signed at the start of last

season after being released by Wolverhampton Wanderers, having spent a season on loan at Dagenham & Redbridge. He graduated through the academy at Boreham Wood where his performances earned him a move to Molineux in 2017. Finished his first season at Sutton being voted Young Player of the Year. LOUIS JOHN (6) Defender who was a member of the Sutton reserve and youth teams before joining Crawley, from where he returned on loan in January 2014 before signing on a permanent basis at the start of the following season. He went on to make over 100 appearances, winning two England C caps, and then joined Cambridge United in summer 2018. He returned to Sutton in November 2019 and recently made his 150th appearance for the club. CALLUM KEALY (21) Australia born striker who joined from Worthing at the end of January. Formerly with Brighton at Under 21 level, he has also played for Metropolitan Police and Lewes. BEN MARGETSON (22) Defender signed in January on loan until the end of the season from Cardiff City, where he has been a regular member of the Under-23 side.

Midfielder who began his career with Arsenal and was part of the side that won the double of the FA Youth Cup and Premier Academy League in 2009. He made four senior appearances before loan spells at Millwall, Wycombe and Colchester, who he then joined on a permanent basis, making over 50 appearances in all before a brief spell at Yeovil at the end of the 2014-15 season. Signed in September 2015, he won the Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards in his first season and was in the National League South team of the season. SUTTON UNITED ROB MILSOM (24) At home in midfield or at left back, he began his career with Fulham and, after loan spells with Brentford, Southend and Finnish club TPS, he moved to Aberdeen where he made over 50 appearances. He has subsequently played for Rotherham, Crawley and Notts County, where he made nearly 100 appearances in two spells before being released and joining Sutton at the start of last season.

ISAAC OLAOFE (25) Striker signed for a second loan spell from Millwall in October. First joined on loan in February, playing five games before the season was ended, and began this season on loan at St Johnstone before returning south. WILL RANDALL (11) Winger signed at the start of last season who began his career with Swindon before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2016. He subsequently had loan spells with Walsall, Forest Green and Spanish club

TOBI SHO-SILVA (17) Striker signed in August after leaving FC Halifax Town, for whom he scored eight goals in thirty games last season, including their goal in the play-off defeat at Boreham Wood. A Londoner, he began his career as a youth player with Charlton and had loan spells with Welling and Inverness Caledonian Thistle before joining Bromley in 2016,

scoring eleven goals for them in the 2016-17 season. He then joined Dover, where he spent two seasons before joining Halifax at the start of last season. He has represented England at Under 18 level. AARON SIMPSON (26) Right back signed at the start of the season having spent last season with Dover. Originally with Maidstone, he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017 and subsequently had spells with Portsmouth, Telford and Kilmarnock as well as playing in Spain and the Republic of Ireland. He has represented England at Under 18 level.

They are a direct side, and if anything, they’re probably a better version of Bromley. Sutton come into the game with more momentum and having seen Torquay slip up at the weekend, they’re going to want to take advantage of that and will be on us from the first whistle.

We played against Sutton not too long ago, so we know what they’re about. We had just come back after a period of isolation when we played in January, so this match will be different and we’re much more up to speed than we were then.

Liam Gordon’s header in the first half secured the Dagenham & Redbridge all three points as they beat Bromley 1-0.

Dagenham took the lead midway through the first half, with loanee defender Liam Gordon heading Myles Weston’s cross home from close range.

Bromley almost levelled the score at the beginning of the second period, only for Elliot Justham’s tremendous save preserving the lead.

The Daggers had numerous opportunities to put the result beyond doubt, with George Saunders, Scott Wilson, and Matt Robinson all testing the under pressure visiting defence.

But with Bromley struggling to break down the hosts down, one goal proved to be enough as Daryl McMahon’s men secured a muchneeded victory.

Despite a quiet opening ten minutes from both sides, it was Dagenham who looked to be the more threatening, with Weston’s dangerous ball plucked out of the air by Mark Cousins. Approaching the 15th minute, the Daggers looked to test the Bromley ‘keeper, with Charlee Adams trying his luck from distance, only to see his shot deflected behind for a corner.

Weston, in particular, was causing the visitors plenty of trouble and after collecting a fantastic ball from Saunders in the 22nd minute, the winger’s deep cross was directed just beyond the reach of the Wilson in the centre of the box.

However, only two minutes later, Daryl McMahon’s men deservedly took the lead, with Weston once again at the heart of the move. A delicious ball into the box was flicked on by the head of Dean Rance, before fullback Gordon popped up at the far post to nod the ball home from close range. Reeling from having conceded the opening goal, the Bromley defence almost allowed the hosts in again, having failed to clear the ball. However, as Saunders cut back across his marker, the ball was deflected away to safety by a trailing leg. Just past the half hour mark, Bromley were beginning the threaten the Dagenham goal, with Liam Trotter’s header, from a dipping Jack Bridge corner, taking a slight deflection before drifting wide of the right-hand post.

Approaching the half time break, the Ravens were gifted a golden opportunity to level, after winning a freekick just outside the penalty area, only for Bridge’s attempt to have too much power on it, causing the ball to drift well wide. Whatever Neil Smith had said to his players at half time almost had an immediate effect as in the 48th minute, Courtney Duffus broke free on the Daggers goal. After a brilliant last-ditch challenge, the ball bobbled to Michael Cheek, whose shot forced Justham into a tremendous save. After having little to do in the first half, the Dagenham shot stopper was having a much busier second 45, getting his fingers to a deep cross in the 55th minute to deny the visiting attacker a chance to head at goal. With 30 minutes left to play, Bromley continued to turn the screw, with Duffus outmuscling Callum Reynolds just inside the penalty area, before trying his luck at goal. Once again though, Justham was more than a match for the attempt, making a smart save at the near post. However, the Daggers were remaining dangerous, as Saunders and Wilson began to cause the Bromley defence plenty of grief, with two great opportunities within the space of two minutes. As the game entered the final ten minutes, the hosts almost put the game to bed. Having defended a dangerous Bromley set piece, Wilson was fed through on goal, after beating his man in the centre of the pitch. With the resulting ball squared to Robinson, the midfielder saw his goal bound effort blocked by a Bromley defender, denying him the chance to score in three consecutive games. Moments later, substitute Darren McQueen, who came on in place of Wilson, looked to make an immediate impact, charging into the penalty area, and stinging the palms of Cousins with a dangerous low shot. But with the Daggers keeping the ball in the opposite half, deep into added time, Bromley looked to run out of ideas, with the referee bringing the game to an end, handing the hosts a deserved victory and their first in four games.

DAGGERS PROUDLY WEAR THE LGBTQ+ RAINBOW The Daggers proudly wore the LGBTQ+ rainbow on our home shirts for the first-time last week, as we returned to winning ways against Bromley. Liam Gordon’s first half header was the difference in a tightly contested battle against the Ravens, with the east London side working their socks off to secure all three points. The Club are celebrating LGBTQ+ history month, an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. The month is intended as a means to raise awareness of, and combat prejudice against the LGBT community while celebrating its

achievement and diversity and making it more visible. We asked manager Daryl McMahon and goalkeeper Elliot Justham how much they thought attitudes to sexuality and gender identity have changed in football since the pair first began their retrospective playing careers. After over 400 games as a professional, the midfielder is someone who also knows how to win a football match, having led Gillingham to the League Two title in 2013, before helping Southend United to play-off glory two years later. This season has proved to be a tougher challenge for him, as the Daggers occupy 18th in the Vanarama National League table. However, Weston felt that last Tuesday’s win over Bromley could prove to be the spark that they were looking for. “I thought that the performance was probably coming but I think it was great to get the win,” he admitted. “Hopefully today we can continue that and go on a run, but that is what I think our problem has been this season, being inconsistent. “We knew that we didn’t perform to the standards that we should have at Notts County, and the preparation for the week was to work on the things that we needed to work on. I think it paid off. “I think we can have all the ability in the world but working hard and having desire has to be first. Against Notts County, we lacked a bit of that and against Bromley, we brought it all, which was the difference between the two games. “I know we have done it before, but we cannot come from behind every game because you are coming up against good teams and they are not going to let you do that. To get a clean sheet against Bromley was very important to give everyone confidence and something to build on.” That result on Tuesday saw the Daggers snap a run of four games without a win, with the last victory before that coming against King’s Lynn Town on January 23. Despite that positive, Daryl McMahon’s men find themselves nearer the wrong end of the table, when hopes before the start of the season were set on fighting for one of two promotion places. “If you see the results, everyone can beat everyone else. This league is so up and down; you just don’t know who is going to beat who week to week,” said the midfielder. “I feel the most consistent team is going to get promoted. You could be mid-table right now but if you win five or six on the bounce, which is possible in this league, then it puts you in a good position. Having signed on at the Chigwell Construction Stadium in February 2020, Tuesday’s game against Sutton United marks his first year at the club. However, injuries and the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in Weston making fewer appearances than he would have liked.

When asked about his career so far with the Daggers, the experienced midfielder was quick to admit that after finding his feet, he has adopted his role as the experience head with open arms.

“I got injured in my first game for the club so that was a bit of a setback. Then, when I got fit again, the season was stopped so I did not have any time to get into any rhythm,” he said. “Even at the beginning of this season, I was injured with my hamstring, so it was a slow start. However, I feel like I am in a rhythm now and I feel like I am settled at the club. “I am at the age where it is not just about me, it is about helping other people, especially the younger players, to improve and become as good as they can. We have got some good young players in our team, who could definitely play higher, hopefully that is with us.” However, the season could have been further interrupted as the National League member clubs voted on whether to continue their season or not, following the issues of financing the season without supporters, with extra grant money from the DCMS not forthcoming. Thankfully, while a majority of the teams in the divisions below Dagenham elected to stop, the National League itself voted to resume, leaving Weston grateful for the opportunity to continue the season. “I am so happy that we are still playing,” he admitted. “Last season, football at our level got cancelled and for that four to five months, we were not doing anything. It was quite hard to be honest. If we stopped now, there still would have been another three or four months of doing nothing. “I kind of feel for the leagues below because it is the same for them. They are going to have to find things to do or do something else, other than football, and for some of them, football might be it. “It is definitely hard, but I am glad our season can continue as we have got a lot of games left and a lot of points to play for.” With so many games left to complete this season, opportunities are plenty for McMahon’s team to put together a late charge for the play-offs, beginning with Sutton United. “They play the same formation that Bromley play and I think they are better at it than Bromley are. However, we played well against Bromley and we got the win so there is no reason why we can’t play well against Sutton and get the win,” claimed Weston. “We need to carry on from last week and I feel like we can win the game. We have just got to bring everything and then leave it all on the field. If we do that, we can definitely win the game.” DAGGERS.CO.UK
