Good evening everyone from the Chigwell Construction Stadium. I would like to wish the Daggers fans a happy new year, and I hope that you are all keeping safe and well. I’d like to offer a warm welcome to Jim Gannon, his staff and his players this evening. On Sutton United Defeat:

Overall, we were rusty and way off the pace of where we have been. You could have expected that to a certain extent because of the time off that we have had due to our period of isolation. Our first half performance was good, we passed the ball really well, but we didn’t make enough in the final third. It was difficult once Sutton scored in the second half because they are so good on the counter attack. We huffed and puffed but couldn’t really get going. On The Squad:

Players that come into the team have to step up to the plate when they’re called upon. It’s really important that players who want to play and are unhappy about not being in the team perform when they are called upon.

We’re going to be missing players at certain points due to injury and the virus so they have to show what they can do come 3pm on a Saturday or 7pm on a Tuesday.

On tonight’s opponents:

I would say that Stockport probably have the best squad in the division.

When you look at the team on paper and the players that they’ve recruited over the past few months are of a good standard, a lot of those from the division above.

They have a fantastic training ground, which was previously used by Manchester City and I’ve been there once or twice.

When you look at the league table going into the game tonight, we’re only six points behind them, so we want to equip ourselves and get back to winning ways.

If we want to be a team that’s involved in challenging at the top end of the table then we need to be picking up results against the best.

We’re not far away but we aren’t where we want to be yet, and tonight is a big test for us as we look to move forward.

THEHATTERSI MEET THE TEAM Ash Palmer Centre half Ash made the move from Guiseley having made more than 70 appearances and captaining the Lions. He previously spent time with Barnsley FC, Scunthorpe and Buxton, but made his name at North Ferriby United, helping them to win promotion from the National League North in 2016. In the 2018/19 season, Ash was a crucial part of County’s defence that won the National League North. Following promotion to the National League, Palmer remained a crucial part of the defence, making 40 appearances and scoring six goals in 2019/20.

Ben Hinchliffe Ben joined the Hatters in May 2016 after four very successful years with AFC Fylde, including four successive Play-Off campaigns and being named in the Divisional Team of the Year every season. He started his career at Preston North End then joining Derby County. He enjoyed a spell at Oxford United then moved back to Lancashire to play for Bamber Bridge. Six-foot-one Ben will forever be a hero to the Fylde fans, having scored the winning spot-kick in the 2014 Conference North Play-Off final penalty shootout. He also scored a 60-yard wonder goal in the 2013 PlayOff semi-final, which won Fylde’s Goal of the Season award. Over his time at County, Ben has kept 61 clean sheets in 193 appearances, including 22 as County won the National League North in 2018/19.

Sam Minihan Attacking right-back Sam joined the Hatters in May 2016 from Worcester City. Sam can play full back, wing back or in midfield and also has Football League experience, having started his career with hometown club Rochdale. He was named County’s Young Player Liam Hogan

Josh Barnes Josh, 22, joined the Club over the summer after being released from Derby County, having come through the Academy at Pride Park. Goalkeeper Josh represented the U18s, U21s and U23s during his time at Derby, whilst also enjoying loan spells at Mickleover Sports, Eastleigh, Bedworth United and Farsley Celtic.

Liam Hogan Captain and Central defender Liam joined the Club in February 2020, making the move from League Two Salford City where he was also captain. A serial promotion winner, Liam started his career with Woodley Sports before being picked up by FC Halifax Town in 2010, where he won promotion to the Conference North in his first season, and went on to make 135 appearances in three seasons. In the summer of 2013, he stepped up to the professional game with a move to League Two Fleetwood Town where again he won promotion in his first season, before spending time at Tranmere Rovers, Macclesfield Town and Gateshead before joining Salford.

James Jennings Left-back James, 32, joined County this Summer after leaving Wrexham upon the expiration of his contract, following three years at the Racecourse ground where he made over 100 appearances. He brings a vast amount of experience to the team, having started his career in the Manchester City youth system before playing for a number of successful National League Clubs, including Cambridge United, Forest Green Rovers and a promotion winning campaign with Mansfield. James signed for the Hatters alongside his younger brother Connor. Mark Kitching Mark, 24, is a versatile defender who joined from Hartlepool United in the summer. Born in the North East, he was a graduate of Middlesbrough’s highly regarded Academy, gaining experience from loan spells at York City and Rochdale before joining the latter permanently in February 2017. Predominantly playing at left-back, Mark made 78 appearances for Hartlepool over a two-year spell, before making the move to Edgeley Park. Jamie Scott Jamie, 22, joined the Hatters permanently in the Summer following three previous loan spells at Edgeley Park from Oldham Athletic, playing a key role during our 2018/19 title winning season in the National League North.

A left-sided centre-half, Jamie formed a formidable partnership alongside Ash Palmer at the back, only on the losing side once in 18 games. Jamie only took a few weeks away from Edgeley Park, returning for a third loan spell, making a further 12 appearances. Jamie then returned to Oldham last summer looking to secure a place in the first team, before injury brought a premature end to his season. Following his release from Boundary Park, Jamie returned to County on a two-year deal. Macauley Southam-Hales Right-back Macauley joined Stockport over the Summer, signing from Fleetwood Town. Macauley spent 12 years as a junior in Cardiff City’s academy, signing on loan with Barry Town before joining Fleetwood in January 2019. Macauley also enjoyed a loan spell at Hartlepool United last season. Adam Thomas Manager Jim Gannon signed winger Adam from Hednesford Town in May 2016. The six-foot-three wide man spent 12 years in Everton’s Academy alongside the likes of England star Ross Barkley before joining Stoke City for a three-year spell. After several injury-hit seasons, Adam played a crucial role in the National League North title-winning season of 2018/19, playing at rightback, right wing-back, right-wing and as a centre-forward at different stages of

the season. Throughout the titlewinning season, Thomas scored eight goals in 48 appearances in all competitions. Thomas continued his form after promotion, only missing two games as County returned to the National League. Jordan Keane Versatile midfielder Jordan, who can also play at the back, joined County from National League North rivals Boston United. His previous clubs include Stoke City, Tamworth, Alfreton, Nuneaton and Worcester City. Jordan also attended the Jamie Vardy Academy in 2017. During the 2018-19 National League North winning season, Keane was an integral part of the Hatters’ midfield which helped lift the trophy, and he was one of the first players to sign on for the coming season, where he made 39 appearances. Lois Maynard Lois Maynard signed on at Edgeley Park in February 2020, only making one appearance before the season was cut short. Lois started his career in nonleague for Daisy Hill, Chadderton, Flixton and Winsford United before getting his move to FC Halifax Town in 2013. After two years there he moved to Tranmere Rovers, making it to the Play-Off Final in 2017 then joining Salford City. At Salford City, he won the National League North in his first season and won promotion again winning the

24-year-old striker Alex joined County on a free transfer from Stevenage in the Summer. He joined the League Football Education’s Player Placement Programme in Sweden, joining Ange IF in 2014. Reid moved back to the UK and signed for Fleetwood Town in 2016, before loan spells at Wrexham, Solihull Moors and Stevenage. After impressing on loan, he signed for Stevenage in 2018. Capable of playing on the left-hand side of the attack as well as the central striker himself, Alex spent the 2019/20 season out on loan at the Daggers and Ebbsfleet United, scoring an impressive 11 goals in 23 starts in all competitions. John Rooney Attacking midfielder John Rooney signed ahead of the 2020/21 season, joining on a three-year deal from Barrow. The former Bluebirds captain enjoyed a stellar 2019/20 campaign, scoring 20 goals from midfield en-route to promotion to League 2, and picking up the National League Player of the Year award in the process. A graduate of Everton’s Youth Academy, he joined Macclesfield town in 2002 and went on to make 41 appearances for the club. In 2011 he moved to the US and played for both the New York Red Bulls and Orlando City in the MLS. On returning to the UK, he played for Barnsley, Bury and made over 100 appearances for Chester City. He signed for Wrexham in 2016 and enjoyed a loan spell at Guiseley before being signed by Barrow in 2018. Ryan Croasdale Former Kidderminster and AFC Fylde midfielder Ryan signed a three-year deal at Edgeley Park over the Summer. Ryan began his career coming through the academy at Preston North-End, The England C international then spent two years at Sheffield Wednesday before moving to Kidderminster in 2016. After being named Club Captain in his second year at Kidderminster, Ryan then moved on to AFC Fylde in 2018. He spent two years at Mill Farm, making over 50 appearances and helping them to the 2019 National League Play-Off final, and to victory in the FA Trophy at Wembley. Nyal Bell Stockport-born Nyal is a powerful 6’2 striker with a real eye for goal. He joined the Hatters from Gateshead in the summer of 2018. The previous season, the former Rochdale front man had enjoyed a loan spell with Chester before ending the season at Alfreton, where he 08 THE DAGGER

scored four goals in 12 appearances. Nyal enjoyed a successful debut campaign for the Hatters, hitting 13 goals in County’s title-winning season and he continued to be a goal threat in the 2019/20 National League, scoring six goals. Richard Bennett Richard Bennett, signed for County in March 2020, making one competitive appearance for the Hatters before the 2019/20 season was cut short. Previously, he had played in non-league with Curzon Ashton, Mossley and Northwich Victoria, where he and Jim Gannon made it to the FA Cup Second Round, where Richie scored in a 3-2 defeat to Northampton Town. He then got his move to Barrow, scoring 16 goals in his only season at Holker Street before getting his Football League move to Carlisle United, spending two years there which included a loan spell at Morecambe before moving on to Port Vale prior to the 2019/20 season. Bennett scored seven goals for Port Vale in 2019/20 before reuniting with Jim Gannon at County. Connor Jennings Versatile forward Connor returned to Edgeley Park for a second spell this Summer, joining the Cub after a hugely

successful four year spell at Tranmere Rovers. Capable of playing anywhere behind the striker, or up top himself, Connor first played for the Hatters in a loan spell from Scunthorpe United during the 2012/13 season, where he impressed with eight goals in 16 appearances. Successful spells at Macclesfield and Wrexham followed before his move to Prenton Park, where he played a crucial role in back-to-back promotions for Rovers. Making a total of 140 appearances in his time there, Connor featured in three play-off finals, scoring in two of them. Jordan Williams Jordan plays as a winger and signed in mid-August 2020 for County from AFC Fylde, after scoring 15 goals in 37 appearances in his only season at Mill Farm, including at Bramall Lane against Premier League Sheffield United in Fylde’s 2-1 loss in the FA Cup Third Round. Jordan has played under Jim Gannon before at Northwich Victoria, making their way to the FA Cup Second Round in 2015, alongside striker Richie Bennett. Jordan has also featured for Barrow, Rochdale and Lincoln City in his playing career which has seen him spend two years at Football League level before dropping back into the National League when he joined Fylde.

GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME FROM THE CHIGWELL CONSTRUCTION STADIUM

It is good to be able to return to playing at home after three long weeks away. Lockdown has been tough but luckily, I used to do a bit of personal training, I did some in the summer, so I have been using all of that equipment. It has been freezing cold as well so running hasn’t been the most inviting thing to do but luckily the equipment that I have has kept me fit and I felt good coming back into training. Saturday’s defeat to Sutton United in the FA Trophy was very disappointing, especially as I felt we didn’t really cause them too many problems and didn’t work their ‘keeper enough. Obviously, we were going for it at the end to try and get the equaliser and they scored with the last kick of the game, but I don’t think it was really too much of a flattering score line. We had a lot of good possession, but we didn’t really hurt them. Elliot (Justham) has made two or three really good saves for us but that final decision, whether it was to pass or shoot and then the execution was just lacking really. It was our first game in about three weeks so hopefully we have blown away any cobwebs that we had ahead of tonight’s game. There are no cup competitions for us now, so we have only got the league to focus on, starting against Stockport County, who have shown that they are wanting to go for it

this year as well. It will be a good test to see where we are at really, in terms of coming up against a promotion rival. Stockport have players that are either experienced or in their prime plus a few players that have won this league as well so I think they will be expected to do well this year. To come away from tonight with a result, I think we just need to be improving our end product. We need to work on getting into those good positions and making the right decision. Against Sutton, their first goal came from the player having a strike and taking it well. When we get into those good positions, we need to do the same. In the middle of the pitch wasn’t too bad at the weekend, especially in the first half, but the most important thing in football is both boxes, defending and attacking. If we can be a bit more clinical, especially being at home and taking the game to them, we give ourselves the best chance of winning. On a personal note, it is a massive privilege to be captain of any club but especially for a club like Dagenham. Hopefully I can help to lift this club further up the table. Dagenham & Redbridge were knocked out of the FA Trophy, falling to a 3-1 defeat to Sutton United at Gander Green Lane on Saturday.

There were two changes from our last match against Dover Athletic on Boxing Day, with Elliott Johnson and Charlee Adams coming into the side for Kenny Clark and the recently departed Abu Ogogo. Callum Reynolds captained the side.

Ten minutes into the game, Reynolds gave away a free kick just on the edge of the area on the left-hand side, Elliot Justham punching away from danger. A first sight at goal for the Daggers saw Angelo Balanta slip Paul McCallum in behind the Sutton defence, with Dean Bouzanis rushing out to collect.

Another free kick for the home side saw Rob Milsom strike from range, with Justham getting two hands to the ball which looked to be heading for the back of the net. Following some good play from the U’s, Harry Beautyman found some space and tried his luck, but the shot was straight at Justham. A long ball over the top found Isaac Olaofe and Justham had to be on hand once again, with the Daggers number one coming off his line quickly to deny the forward’s volleyed effort for a corner.

There were chances for both sides soon after the half-hour mark, with Omar Bugiel heading over the bar before McCallum was denied with a blocked effort. Olaofe was then denied from close range with the home side having a good spell of possession, which ended with Bugiel

having a shot superbly saved by Justham, before the Daggers were finally to clear the ball away after some last ditch defending. The home side took the lead early in the first half, Bugiel firing home from the edge of the area. There was a good chance for an equaliser, as a cross from the right found Gordon on the far side who found McCallum, but the forward could only fire wide. Barden chipped a shot over the bar after beating Luke Croll to the ball on the edge of the area, but the home side did find a second soon after, Olaofe firing home after finding some space inside the box. With the Daggers looking for a way back into the match, Balanta headed over the bar following a free kick after Liam Gordon was fouled. With three minutes left on the clock Scott Wilson got past his man on the right-hand side before firing a cross, which Sutton goalkeeper Bouzanis pushed into his own net. Craig Dundas nearly got a third for the home side after beating Reynolds inside the area, with Justham denying the veteran. The ball was bouncing around the Sutton box as they looked for an equaliser, but it was hooked away with Sutton hitting us on the counterattack and Randall scoring a third to send them through to the next round of the FA Trophy.

It has to be Leyton Orient at home on Boxing Day. It was a win against a big rival, a full stadium and we came back from 1-0 down which made it so special. Plus, the fact that Nunny (Ben Nunn) got the goal, it was a special day.

When I went out to the Gold Cup, we played against the USA in the opening match. Christian Pulisic was probably the best player on the pitch, in terms of his stature in the game at the moment. Luckily, he was on the opposite wing to me.

Andre is a classy player, probably the calmest player I’ve seen on the ball in my career. The way he moved around the pitch with the ball was effortless and his close control was second to none at this level.

It’s a tough call, but Elliot has saved us so many times. He’s such a consistent goalkeeper and is without doubt one of, if not the best in this division. It’s great to know you have him behind you from a defender’s point of view.

Peter joined Bolton on loan and he’s a very impressive full-back. I’ve played against him when he was at Hartlepool, so it was nice to have him on my team for a change. He has lots of energy and is very good at attacking and defending.

Ricardo is a brick wall. I played with him at Bolton and he’s such a good defender. He’s got every attribute you would want from centre back and he’s made the step up to League Two with ease.

CB - Luke Croll

Crolly and I have built up a really good partnership, especially towards the back end of last season when the Gaffer came in. He’s so calm on the ball at the back and has a great eye for a pass.

LB - Liam Gordon

Well, I couldn’t exactly put anybody over myself, could I?

CM - Neil Danns

Dannsy is the captain of the Guyana National Team. He’s played at such a high level, including in the Premier League at the start of his career and he’s been fantastic for me since I came into the National setup.

FAVOURITE PLAYER GROWING UP Ronaldinho without a doubt. People might laugh at that because of the position that I play in, but I used to try and copy his skills when I was younger and really idolised him. I started out playing football as a striker too, so I had more of an opportunity to showcase any skills I learnt.

Angelo is a superb player; on his day he is unstoppable and so difficult to get the ball off. He has been fantastic for the team ever since he arrived and was instrumental in keeping us up in his first season.

Nathan was another player that I’ve played with at Bolton. He’s got so much experience and has played quite a few times in the Premier League at the start of his career. He played on the left wing for Bolton and we formed a good partnership.

RW - Fejiri Okenabirhie

Fey was such a good finisher. In the second half of the 2017/18 season, he was on fire, which earnt him his move to the football league, where he’s still firing in goals.

ST - Conor Wilkinson

Conor was sensational when he arrived here on loan. He is a natural finisher and his partnership with Angelo was superb during the season. He scored some memorable goals and is now scoring regularly in the league.

Dagenham & Redbridge took the points in a tight affair in front of the BT Cameras, with Angelo Balanta heading home early in the second half to secure victory over Dover Athletic at the Crabble this evening.

Daryl McMahon made two changes from our previous match against Ebbsfleet in the FA Trophy with Dean Rance and Luke Croll coming into the side in place of Charlee Adams and Elliott Johnson.

Former Dagger Ade Azeez had the opening opportunity in the match firing well wide of Elliot Justham’s goal after a ball over the top from the home side. The first chance for the Daggers fell to Paul McCallum, a cross from Andy Eleftheriou saw the number nine volley over the goal, a tough chance for the forward.

There was another chance for the visitors, Dean Rance’s shot at goal from outside the area was flicked towards goal by McCallum but straight at Yusuf Mersin for an easy save. Darren McQueen and Abu Ogogo found themselves going for the same ball after the ball fell just outside the area, between them seeing an effort fired wide.

The Daggers were creating chances and McCallum saw his header saved by Mersin following a good move. At the other end, Kenny Clark was on hand to deny Rigg inside the area with a great block.

Darren McQueen found himself behind the Dover defence managing to get the ball past Mersin outside the area but could only drag wide, although he looked to have been fouled in the process with the referee waving the protest away. Andy Hessenthaler’s side found themselves down to ten-men with ten minutes remaining in the first half. Josh Passley lunging into a tackle on McQueen with a poor challenge giving the referee no opportunity but to show the red card.

McQueen then had an effort which was dragged wide of the post before halftime and Angelo Balanta almost found the back of the net with a strike inside the Dover box which was blocked by the home defence before the half-time whistle.

The Daggers couldn’t have hoped for a better start in the second period with Aneglo heading home from a wellworked free kick from the away side. Half-time substitutes Charlee Adams and Myles Weston combining with the former taking a short set piece to the right for Weston to take a touch and fire a deep cross which Balanta headed home off the crossbar after being left unmarked by the Dover defence.

Some great football from the front three saw Balanta flick the ball over the top to McQueen to run down the lefthand side with his cross inches ahead of McCallum who was running into the six-yard area to fire home. Dover were awarded a penalty just after the hour mark following a foul from Liam Gordon on Ahkeen Rose but Justham dived the right way to save down to his right-hand side from Azeez’s poor effort.

Daryl’s side were looking to regain their composure after Dover were keeping hold off possession well as they looked for an equaliser. Weston had a strike at

goal which was held by Mersin at his near post, and Balanta showed his quality once again flicking the ball behind the Dover defence for McQueen to run onto with the forward’s effort hitting the post before the ball was scrambled away from the hosts.

The Daggers almost grabbed a second of the game through Callum Reynolds who had his effort blocked before a shot from Gordon was saved from the left. There were very few chances in the final moments with the Daggers seeing out the match keeping hold off possession well to secure the three points. The Daggers securing back-to-back league wins for the first time since September 2019.

Abu Ogogo

The Club can confirm that Abu Ogogo, Kai Brown, Bailey Clements and Jaden Brissett have all left the Club since the New Year. Ogogo has returned to parent club, Bristol Rovers after his loan deal with the Daggers came to an end.

The midfielder rejoined the club in October, having made 225 appearances for the East London side between 2009-2015. In his latest spell, the 31-yearold captained Daryl McMahon's side, and made 13 appearances in all competitions. Brown and Clements both returned to Ipswich Town after their loan deals came to an end. Kai played three times during his time with the Daggers, as he returned to the club that he had played for in his youth. Bailey made one appearance whilst here in east London, as he came off the bench in our 5-2 victory over Ebbsfleet United in the FA Trophy.
