It was a really good performance away from home at a tough place to go. It wasn’t an easy pitch, but I thought we handled the game really well. Across the season we’ve shown we can defend – we’ve had quite a few clean sheets away from home and it’s imperative that when you do take that 1-0 lead, you protect your own goal and I thought we did that really well on Saturday. As a professional footballer, you’re paid to be ready to play football. Sometimes it doesn’t go that way and players lose focus, but I think in this period we’re currently in, the boys have been absolutely outstanding, to a man. Whoever we’ve called upon to step into the team, their performance and their work ethic has been outstanding and that’s all I can ask for as a manager – long may it continue. On Hartlepool United…

They’re excellent to watch. They’ve probably been the best footballing team that I’ve seen in

the league this season. I’ve managed against Dave Challinor a few times – we both came into this league at the same time and he’s someone that I get on really well with. He’s doing a great job there and they’ve got some terrific players which is going to make it a really tough game – probably the toughest game we’ve had for a while, but we’re going into it in decent form ourselves. I’ve said this over and over again, but I think it’s important to keep repeating – over the last period of five or six games, we’ve been playing some really good stuff. Now we’ve had a few players come in, they’ve given us some real energy and bite and we have to maintain our current performance levels if we want to be moving forward and that starts tonight against Hartlepool.

HARTLEPOOL UNITED THEPOOLI MEET THE TEAM

Dave Challinor Dave Challinor was appointed Hartlepool Manager in November 2019 following a long and successful spell at AFC Fylde during which he oversaw The Coasters’ impressive elevation through the footballing pyramid. Challinor began his playing days at Tranmere Rovers where he came through the ranks to develop into a centre-back at Prenton Park. Challinor then joined Stockport County and after a couple of seasons with The Hatters he was allowed to join Bury on loan in January 2004 which became permanent that summer. He was installed as Club Captain at Bury and spent four years there before a knee injury forced him to retire from professional football at the end of the 2007/08 campaign. Challinor was able to play part-time and became skipper of Colwyn Bay with whom he reached the play-offs two seasons in succession and secured promotion in 2010 after which he was appointed as Player/Manager of the club. His first season as manager saw The Bay finish runners-up in the Northern Premier League Premier Division and they triumphed in the playoffs to be promoted to National League North. It was in November 2011 that Challinor was tempted away to join AFC Fylde as boss. When Challinor took the reins at Fylde, the club were playing their football in Northern Premier League Division One North and in his first season in charge they were promoted from Northern Premier League Division One North as champions. The Coasters made it to the play-offs the following campaign, while also making it through 06 THE DAGGER

to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup and winning silverware in the form of the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy. They went one better in 2013/14 when Fylde won the play-offs to take their place in National League North, also retaining the Challenge Trophy. In 2016/17 there was more joy for Challinor and the Fylde supporters as they clinched another promotion as Champions of National League North, and he led the club in to the fifth tier for the first time in their history. He then led them a third placed finish in the National League in 2017/18 only to fall at the play-off hurdle, while in the 18/19 season he took them to Wembley where they won the FA Trophy. Ben Killip Killip signed during the summer of 2019, after being the star performer for Braintree that season, finishing the season as skipper and keeping an impressive ten clean sheets despite their relegation. His form not only earned him plenty of admirers, the former Chelsea trainee also gained international recognition when he won three caps for England C during 2019/20. Henrich Ravas The Goalkeeper joined Pools from Derby County for the season. The Slovakian joined Derby after spending time with both Peterborough United and Boston United on non-contract terms. The 2017/18 campaign was a positive one for Ravas, as he spent the season on loan at Gainsborough Trinity. He appeared 43 times in total and, despite several fine performances which resulted in him being named as Gainsborough’s Young Player of the Year, he was unable to help the side avoid relegation. He acted as Derby’s third-choice goalkeeper upon his return to Derby during the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons and appeared as an unused substitute on several occasions. Lewis Cass Cass signed on loan from Newcastle.

Equally capable at right-back or at centre-back, Lewis joined United at the age of 12. Cass has been an everpresent for the Under-23 squad in recent years after signing his first professional contract with the club in July 2018. David Ferguson The attacking full back joined the club on a permanent deal after his contract with York came to an end. After signing for then Championship side Blackpool FC, Ferguson went on to captain the side until the end of his contract in the 2015-16 season. David then signed for Northern League Division One club Shildon in August 2016 but moved to Darlington the following January. In October 2017, Ferguson signed for York City and he enjoyed a successful campaign registering 16 assists from left full back before recently played in York’s semi-final play-off game for the end of the 2019/20 season. Gary Liddle Liddle made a return to The Vic in January from parent club Walsall. Liddle made his senior debut in Pools colours back in August 2006 after signing from Middlesbrough and he played a key role as the Club won promotion from League Two in 2006/07. He was crowned as joint Players’ Player of the Year

alongside Michael Nelson during an impressive first season at The Vic, going on to play 284 times and move 20th in the Club’s list of all-time appearancemakers. Timi Odusina Odusina has been with The Canaries since he was 14 when he made a move from Arsenal and he signed professional terms at Carrow Road in 2016. Since then, he’s gone on to skipper City’s Under-23 side in Premier League 2 before gaining senior experience with his loan spell at the Pools last season before returning this summer. Ryan Johnson The powerful defender signed on a short-term deal after leaving Kidderminster at the end of last season. He started his career with West Bromwich Albion then signed for Stevenage. He made nine appearances for the club and spent time out on loan at Nuneaton Town and fellow National League side Boreham Wood. In January 2019, Johnson signed a permanent deal at Kidderminster Harriers after a successful loan spell until the end of last season. Mark Shelton Shelton joined the club in January 2019 from Salford City. Shelton came through the ranks at Burton Albion, making a name for himself during a successful spell at Alfreton Town which persuaded Salford to pay money for him in 2017.

During his time with City, he played his part in back-to-back promotions into the EFL. Ryan Donaldson Versatile star Ryan Donaldson bounced back from a frustrating first season out injured with an ankle injury at Pools to play a key role in the team last term, making 48 appearances in all competitions. The former Newcastle United star even finished the season wearing the captain’s armband which earnt him a new deal. He joined the Club on a permanent deal during the summer of 2017 following his release from promoted Plymouth Argyle but an ankle injury curtailed his first year in Pools colours. After a handful of senior outings for The Magpies, Donaldson was allowed to move on and made his name at Gateshead where he scored eight times in the National League during 2012/13. That form caught the eye of Cambridge United who took the Tynesider in the summer of 2013 where he scored the Wembley winner in the Play-Off Final which secured their promotion back into the Football League. Luke Molyneux The young winger arrived at Pools in January 2018 on loan from Sunderland for the rest of the season and went on to sparkle during 16 subsequent appearances before signing permanently that summer. Molyneux had spent the first half of the 17/18 season on loan at

Gateshead after being a regular in Sunderland Under-23s team and also making his senior Black Cats bow on the final day. Gavan Holohan Midfield man Gavan Holohan initially joined Pools in February 2019 on a short-term deal. Having come through the ranks with Kilkenny in his native Ireland, Holohan was picked up by Hull City in 2008 and he went on to spend the next four years with The Tigers. Upon his release he signed for Alfreton Town but returned to Ireland in 2013 to join Drogheda United before a move to Cork City. A box-to-box midfielder who is capable of scoring and creating goals, Holohan most recently spent time with Galway United and Waterford before returning for another crack at English football with Pools. Tom Crawford Tom joined Pools following the expiration of his contract with fellow National League side Notts County, where he made nine appearances last season. The 21-year-old midfielder joined Notts County from Chester in May 2018 for an undisclosed fee having progressed through their Academy. Mason Bloomfield Known for his physicality and agility, Bloomfield came through the Daggers Academy and made a League Two appearance whilst aged 17. He later had loan spells at various clubs before

KEYMAN NICKY FEATHERSTONE Experienced midfielder Nicky Featherstone signed in October 2014, initially signing a short-term deal with the Club but quickly became an integral part of the team and is now the Club’s current longestserving player having passed 200 appearances in all competitions during 2019/20. Having started his career with Hull City, he moved on to Hereford United in 2011 on a permanent deal after impressing during a loan spell with The Bulls. After making almost 60 appearances for the Edgar Street outfit, Featherstone returned to the Football League with Walsall where he spent two years before joining up with The Pools.

Joe Grey The 17-year-old Striker joined the Pools Youth Academy last year from Wallsend Boys Club and quickly made a good impression on the coaching staff. Joe made 4 appearances in the First team squad last season featuring on the bench in both league and FA Cup games.

After signing for Norwich City in the summer of 2018 it was announced that Bloomfield would be joining Scottish side Hamilton on loan for the 2018/19 season. After his loan spell was cut short, he immediately joined AFC Fylde under current manager Dave Challinor on loan until the end of the 2018/19 season, however, a broken wrist ended his season early. In May 2019, he joined League Two side Crawley on a season long loan scoring four goals in 23 games signing for Pools last summer. Rhys Oates Between 2015-2018 the forward made 109 appearances for Pools before he went on to sign for league two side Morecambe. After 44 appearances over two seasons, he has now signed a permanent deal at The Vic.

Claudio Ofosu The 21-year-old joined the Pools after spending the last season with BetVictor Southern League Premier Division side Royston Town where he enjoyed a successful season driving them to a second-place league finish with 9 goals and 11 assists. Ofosu began his career with St Neots Town, making 24 appearances before joining Stevenage, progressing through the club’s youth system including loan spells at Biggelswade United and Kings Langley. After leaving The Lamex Stadium, Ofosu returned to St Neots Town, netting three times in 24 appearances.

IT SHOWS EVERYONE THAT WE ARE A TEAM THAT IS DETERMINED NOT TO CONCEDE GOALS, THIS ONLY MAKES US A HARD TEAM TO BEAT WHICH GIVES US THE PLATFORM AND CONFIDENCE TO GO AND WIN GAMES. IT SHOWS WE ARE BECOMING AN EFFICIENT TEAM, BECAUSE YOU CAN’T SCORE 2 OR 3 GOALS EVERY WEEK. You can see the quality of the squad is improving all the time, players now have to perform knowing there are 2/3 players behind them that want their shirts. Once you have it though it’s up to you to keep it by performing every week, this healthy competition is needed for us to be successful. Will’s free kick was brilliant, we all know he has got the technique to do that as he showed going close in the first half.

Will Wright’s stunning free-kick late in the second half was enough to secure Dagenham & Redbridge a narrow 1-0 win over Altrincham. The Robins almost had the lead after 15 minutes, but Kenny Clark’s goalline clearance denied Ryan Colclough’s looping back-post header. Myles Weston created the best of the Daggers’ chances late in the half, weaving his way past several Alty defenders before his goal-bound shot was deflected behind, as both sides entered the break level. With 12 minutes left to play, Will Wright put Daryl McMahon’s side ahead in spectacular fashion, bending his free-kick into the top corner of the net from 20 yards out. Despite a chance in added time from Toby Mullarkey, the Daggers held on for their third win in five games. Only four minutes in, the Daggers came within a whisker of taking an early lead. Breaking into space down the right-hand side, Weston attempted to pick Scott Wilson out at the far post, but his low ball was just beyond the forward’s reach. The Robins were yet to get in the game but were still able to create half-chances on Elliot Justham’s goal, as Joe Piggott blazed his effort in the sixth minute well over the crossbar from the middle of the penalty area. 14 THE DAGGER

However, in the 15th minute, only an excellent goal-line clearance from Clark denied Altrincham the lead. A deep ball into the box from Yusifu Ceesay found Colclough in space, as the Alty forward looped his header toward the opposite side of the goal, only to see the visiting defender deny Alty the lead. Approaching the 20th minute, the Daggers were starting to find themselves being put on the back foot, as Altrincham captain Jake Moult headed another swinging corner narrowly the wrong side of the crossbar. But the visitors were certainly not laying back, as they looked to exploit the space behind the Robins’ defence. In the 23rd minute, Weston turned Reagan Ogle well, before picking out Wilson with a cross, but after taking a touch, the forward’s goal-bound effort was deflected wide. Weston was enjoying himself against Ogle and just past the half-hour mark, the winger almost gave the Daggers the lead. Skipping his way past the Accrington Stanley loanee, the winger dribbled his way into the box before taking aim at the near post, with a defender getting a vital touch on the ball to keep it out of the goal. Approaching the half time break, the Daggers were beginning to motor, as Mo Sagaf and Weston linked up well with one another, with the former Carlisle United midfielder winning a free kick on the edge of the area. Stepping up to take it, Weston could only fire the set-piece high and wide. Phil Parkinson’s side came out for the second half with the bit between their teeth and after 52 minutes, following poor defensive play from Dagenham, they almost snatched the lead. After Josh Hancock fed the ball out wide to Colclough, the former Scunthorpe man

fizzed the ball right across the face of goal, with Piggott unable to connect at the far post. Having survived the early Altrincham pressure, McMahon’s Daggers began to work their way back into the game, as Balanta crossed for Weston in the 59th minute, but the experienced midfielder did not connect well with the ball, heading behind from six yards out. Three minutes later, Balanta this time had a great chance to break the deadlock, as a surging Liam Gordon run saw the Bolton loanee pick the Colombian out with a pinpoint cross, but he got underneath the delivery as his first-time strike flew over. With the game approaching the final fifteen minutes, both Dagenham and Altrincham were struggling to break one another down, as substitutions and fouls in the middle of the pitch turned the game into a hard slog. However, in the 79th minute, after Darren McQueen was hauled down 20 yards out from goal, Wright stepped up to give the Daggers the lead, bending the ball into the top corner of the net, leaving Alty shot-stopper Tony Thompson rooted to the spot. Finding themselves a goal down late in the game, Phil Parkinson’s Altrincham side were throwing bodies at Justham’s goal, pressing for yet another late equaliser. In the 83rd minute, Hancock and Colclough linked up once again, only for the resulting ball into the box to fizz past everyone without taking a touch, one which would have likely turned the ball home. But despite a flurry of half-chances for the Robins, Dagenham were able to see the game out to secure a win which leaves McMahon’s side unbeaten in their last five.

A month can often be a long time in the world of football, and that is certainly true of the National League this season. At the beginning of March, the Daggers were struggling for consistency, picking up only one win from their previous seven games.

Since then, Daryl McMahon’s side has hit a rich vein of form, winning three and drawing two of the following five matches, opening the door to a possible push for one of six play-off spots on offer.

The form of forward Angelo Balanta has been instrumental towards the club’s change of fortunes, including an impressive double against his former team Boreham Wood, with the in-form Colombian playing all 90 minutes of the most recent win over Altrincham. “I felt it was hard-fought,” said Balanta when asked about Saturday’s win at the J. Davidson Stadium.

“We started off well, but they got into a little bit of a rhythm which made it a bit of a 60/40 game (some would say 50/50).

“But a really good goal scored by Will, giving us a lead which we were able to hang on to, secured us all three points.”

Considered by many as something of a set-piece specialist, Will Wright had given the Mancunian side a warning of what he could do, firing a first-half attempt narrowly off target. So, when the Daggers were awarded a free-kick just outside the area with only 11 minutes left to play, it was no surprise to see the defender step up and bend the ball into the top corner.

“He has been doing it for the past couple of years since I have been here, he is really good at set-pieces,” said the Daggers forward. “He had one earlier on in the game as well, which went just past the post, but luckily, he got another chance at it and he put it in.” As good as that strike was, what has been particularly impressive for McMahon’s side, not just in the Altrincham win but since the heavy defeat to Notts County, has been a massive improvement defensively. Since that heavy-handed defeat at Meadow Lane, the Daggers have secured four wins, two draws and two

losses from the following eight games, with those two defeats to Sutton United and Yeovil Town, decided by injury-time strikes.

Further to that, following the victory against Solihull Moors at the beginning of the month, McMahon’s side has only conceded four goals, two of which came in that 2-2 draw at neighbours Boreham Wood. “In recent weeks, I think the team and the back three or four have been performing well to keep clean sheets,” Balanta boasted.

“I feel that in any league, especially in this one, if you can keep the back door shut, and you can nick a goal and score at the other end, you always have a chance of progressing up the table and having a good season. In the last five or six games, we have nullified that situation. “I know we have conceded a few, don’t get me wrong, but at the same time we have minimised it a lot, considering the start of the season.” Dagenham’s unbeaten run will be tested tonight as title-chasing Hartlepool United visit the Chigwell Construction Stadium, a game which had been postponed earlier in the season due to adverse weather conditions.

But with the Daggers full of confidence, the in-form forward believes that his teammates are more than able to collect another three points.

“We know that they are good this season and like to get the ball down and play. It is another test, but we are full of confidence and we should be,” he said.

“We are five unbeaten now and we are coming into today’s game off a win. It is going to be a tough game, but the boys will be looking forward to it.

“As people call it, this is the business end of the season and this is when it is made or broken really, whether you go down, make it in the play-offs, or go up.

“This is where people will look at it and see how successful you have been and the fact that we have got some consistency now, and we can hopefully continue our run, we could push up the table, potentially nick a play-off spot, and who knows from there really.”

Jake McCarthy’s last gasp goal cancelled out Liam Gordon’s screamer as Weymouth snatch a point at the death. The Daggers entered the half time break a goal to the good, after Liam Gordon’s stunning strike in the 43rd minute proved to be unstoppable. Scott Wilson almost extended that lead early in the second half, but was unable to convert a well worked move, as the effort fizzed narrowly over the crossbar. Pierre Fonkeu looked to have the best of the Weymouth chances late in the game, only for Will Wright to throw his body on the line to block the shot. But deep in added time, Jake McCarthy rescued a point for the Terras with a late strike which found its way through a sea of legs, forcing Dagenham to settle for a point. The Daggers started strongly, as Myles Weston’s cross into the box forced a Weymouth defender to hook the ball clear, as the hosts looked to stamp their mark on the game. McMahon’s men almost did just that in the ninth minute, when another Weston cross looked to find Angelo Balanta at the near post, but a defender managed to make a vital touch on the ball, taking away from the Colombian as he looked to pull the trigger. 14 THE DAGGER

The Terras’ shot-stopper was the busier of the two ‘keepers early on and in the 14th minute, he needed to be at his best to keep the score level. After Balanta found Scott Wilson with a good touch of the ball, the former Macclesfield Town attacker saw his goal-bound effort force Ross into a smart save. However, Brian Stock’s side were still asking questions of the Daggers, with Elliot Johnson and Dean Rance throwing their bodies on the line in the 19th minute to deny the Terras a goal-scoring opportunity. As the game approached the half hour mark, Weymouth looked to be growing into the game, forcing Dagenham onto the back foot. In the 28th minute, Andrew Dallas shaped to shoot from distance, but his effort was blazed well over. With ten minutes left in the half, it was the visitors who were looking the more threatening, when Joan Luque’s ball found the head of Dallas, but the Terras’ top scorer got underneath the ball and Elliot Justham made an easy save. But as both sides looked to be entering the break level, the Daggers took the lead in spectacular fashion, when Gordon picked the ball up on the halfway line, before weaving his way past several electric yellow shirts and curling the ball into the top corner from range. With their tails firmly up, McMahon’s men came out for the second half like a house on fire. In the 49th minute, Wilson had two bites at the apple but after seeing his first shot blocked, he blazed his second attempt over the crossbar.

Looking to double their lead, Dagenham were throwing everything they had at the Weymouth defence. The combination of Rance and Wilson almost did just that in the 56th minute, but having been fed the ball, Wilson could only fire into the side netting. Straight up the other end of the pitch, the Terras looked to strike back against the run of play, with Pierre Fonkeu seeing his attempt on goal dealt with by Justham. However, in the 60th minute, the Daggers were back to dominating the game, with Balanta the latest of McMahon’s men to test Ross in the Weymouth goal. Striking from the edge of the area, the Terras’ shot-stopper saved smartly to keep his side in the game. Approaching the final fifteen minutes of the game, the Terras were desperate to claw their way back against the in-form Daggers. Fonkeu tried to take matters into his own hands in the 72nd minute, battling his way through several challenges, before his shot was blocked by the body of Will Wright. Having been brought on with only 12 minutes to play, substitute Adrian Clifton almost had an immediate impact on the game, firing over the crossbar on what was his fourth appearance at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. But as the game looked to be heading for a narrow victory, Weymouth’ McCarthy broke Daggers’ hearts when he fired the ball home after the hosts had failed to deal with the threat, forcing McMahon’s men to settle for a point.
