TOM SMITH JOINS THE DAGGERS Dagenham & Redbridge announced the loan signing of midfielder Tom Smith until the end of the season last week. The 23year-old joins from National League South side, Bath City, where he has made well over 100 appearances and who’s season has been declared null and void. He enjoyed a remarkably successful 2019/20 season, scoring 17 goals, including a number of stunning longrange strikes, and was named the National League South player of the year. The midfielder was on the bench for our match away to Yeovil Town last weekend before making his debut from the start in Tuesday evening’s 1-0 victory over Solihull Moors. Good afternoon everyone from the Chigwell Construction Stadium. I hope you are all keeping safe and well. I would like to wish a warm welcome to Luke Garrard, his staff and his squad ahead of this afternoon’s game. On win against Solihull

It always feels good when you get three points and you win. I thought the performance was very good and I feel that in the last four games, you can see that we have strung together four excellent performances.

We have been unlucky with the defeats against Sutton and Yeovil, I don’t think we deserved that. However, the lads stuck to what we had been doing and that showed in the performance and we got what we deserved in the end.

We limited Solihull to next to nothing really, I thought we defended really well, protected our box well and defended their six or seven corners in that first half excellently. They have been good at corners and set pieces this season, it is a big part of their game and I thought we handled it. On improvements in performance

It is all about us maintaining and building on consistency. There is still loads that we need to improve upon but I think the base level of performance in the previous four games has been very good and now we just need to role on from there and improve, if we can, in certain areas of the pitch.

There was a stat that I saw this week which shows we are top of the division for putting passes into the final third, ahead of Hartlepool, Boreham Wood, Notts County, and Torquay. The other four teams are in the play-offs and we are obviously not where we want to be, and I think we need to capitalise on our chances and opportunities in the final third. I know we have got the players to do it.

It is always tough against Boreham Wood. Luke (Garrard) is a good friend of mine. He has probably had about 200 matches as manager of the club and has got a base of very good players and has added some real quality to it this season. Arguably, on paper, they have got the best attacking line-up in the division and we know that it is going to be a tough game, like it was when we played them earlier on this season.

It is a team we respect, and we look forward to playing them and challenging ourselves against them because they have been in the positions in the last two or three seasons that we want to get to.

LUKE GARRARD Luke couples his role as First Team Manager at Meadow Park with his role as the Academy Manager. The 31year-old was originally an Academy Coach at the Club in 2008, before being promoted to Academy Director in 2012. Luke was then appointed Ian Allinson’s Assistant in 2013, following Ian’s Departure in October 2015, Luke was appointed as the First Team Manager, becoming the youngest boss in all of England’s top five divisions. Luke would steer the Wood away from the relegation zone in the club’s inaugural season in the National League. Garrad’s stock has further risen in the following seasons, having taken the Wood to Wembley for the first time in their history back in 2017/18.

NATHAN ASHMORE Nathan’s senior career started out at Havant and Waterlooville and made his first team debut in 2008. In 2011, Nathan had a loan spell at Gosport Borough, and after some impressive performances the move was made permanent. In his 5 years at Gosport, Nathan helped them gain successive promotions to the National League South, as well as a trip to Wembley in the FA Trophy Final. Ashmore was then snapped up by Ebbsfleet helping them gain promotion to the National League making over 170 appearances, winning the Supporters Player of the Season award twice. In October 2019, Nathan moved to Meadow Park for the remainder of the 2019/20 season on a season long loan before signing a twoyear deal last summer. KANE SMITH Kane joined the Wood on a two-year deal from Hitchin Town in July 2017 after 120 senior appearances over two seasons for Hitchin. In just two-years, Smith scored an impressive 11 goals and provided 30 assists from defence, while also helping to keep 38 clean sheets. These stats led to trials with Premier League side Crystal Palace. Upon returning from injury, Kane signed a new deal to stay at Wood until at least 2021. KANE SMITH

The side achieved their highest ever National League finish, and reached the play-off Final against Tranmere, narrowly losing 2-1. Garrard maintained the Wood’s National League status in the 2018/19 season, finishing in 20th position. Last season Luke took the Wood to the National league Playoff semi-finals in a defeat to eventual Playoff promotion winners, Harrogate Town. 06 THE DAGGER

FEMI ILESANMI Boreham Wood secured the return of Femi Ilesanmi, in June 2018. The leftback originally featured for the Wood in the 2016/17 campaign, where he started all but three matches. Femi began his career in the academy of AFC Wimbledon, before being snapped up by QPR. He departed Loftus Road without making a senior appearance and went on to sign for The Daggers, via Ashford Town, where he featured over 100 times, across a four-year stay, before departing for League Two outfit York City. Ilesanmi would go on to make a further 70 appearances for York City, before he began the first of his spells at Meadow Park. DAVID STEPHENS David signed a professional contract with Norwich in June 2009, making his debut three months later. In March 2010, Stephens joined Lincoln City on loan for the remainder of the season. Stephens signed for Scottish Premier League team Hibernian on a three-year deal in July 2010, leaving Hibs in August 2012 where he signed for Barnet. The defender was voted Barnet’s Player of the Season by supporters in his first two campaigns. After promotion in 2014/15, Stephens rejected a new deal at Barnet signing for Boreham Wood in October 2015.

JAMAL FYFIELD Former Gateshead centre-back Jamal arrived at Meadow Park in June 2018. Fyfield began his career with Leyton Orient, before departing to join Maidenhead United, where he was named as their Young Player of the Year in 2009. His form for the Magpies led to a move to York City, where he helped the club into League Two. A versatile defender, who can also play at left-back, the 30-year-old has made well over 300 career appearances. KRYSTIAN PEARCE Pearce began his career at Birmingham City having graduated from the Blues Academy in 2007. Pearce had numerous loan spells before his departure in 2010. A short spell at Huddersfield Town on a permanent basis in 2010 was quickly followed by a permanent move to Notts County, where he spent three seasons. This was followed by a move to the south coast, where Pearce signed for Torquay United on a two-year deal before a return to the Football League with Mansfield Town in 2015 where he enjoyed a five-year spell. Pearce was named in the 2018/19 League Two Team of the Year after guiding his team as captain to the end of season play-off semi-finals. TOM CHAMPION Boreham Wood captured midfielder Tom Champion on a one-year deal in the summer of 2017. Champion began his

career in the academy at Watford but departed for Barnet in 2004 without making an appearance. The midfielder helped the Bees to the then Conference title in his first season at the club, however departed later that summer for Bishop's Stortford. The 31-year-old would make over 100 appearances for Bishop's Stortford in a five-year spell with the club. Spells with Braintree Town and Dartford followed, as well as a move to Cambridge and a second stint at Barnet. He again achieved promotion to the Football League with Cambridge as Captain. ZAINE FRANCIS-ANGOL Francis-Angol started in the Tottenham Hotspur Academy, in 2011 he moved North of the border to sign for Motherwell spending four seasons making over 60 appearances, before signing with Kidderminster Harriers. After two seasons with Kidderminster, Dave Challinor signed him for Fylde on a 2-year deal where they made the playoffs in both seasons. A move to Accrington Stanley followed, however after the expiration of his contract Garrard snapped up the left back/winger. KEIRAN MURTAGH Murtagh joined the Wood from Woking in the summer of 2017. An international with Antigua and Barbuda, he has played 22 times for his country, scoring five goals. Murtagh made over 100

appearances for Woking after beginning his career in the youth academy at Charlton Athletic. The 28-year-old left the Valley for Fisher Athletic without making an appearance but was back in the Football League a year later with Yeovil Town. Short spells with Wycombe Wanderers and Cambridge United followed before a move to Macclesfield Town, where he made just under 40 appearances. Keiran signed for Woking following a short period at Mansfield Town and went on to make over 110 appearances for the Cardinals. GUS MAFUTA Gus started out with Colchester United’s youth team and later went on to play for Bristol City’s U23’s before his release in 2015. Mafuta then signed for Gateshead FC ahead of the 2015/16 season where he made a great impact in over 60 appearances which earned him a move to Salford City in 2017, where he started in the Promotion Final victory at Wembley over AFC Fylde in 2017/18. Following a two-year stint at ‘the Ammies’ Mafuta was then snapped up by Hartlepool ahead of the 2019/20 season where he made over 30 appearances going onto to sign a yearlong contract with Boreham Wood ahead of this season. KABONGO TSHIMANGA Kabongo joined the Wood from National League South side Oxford City where he thumped in a very impressive 37 goals in

Ricketts began his career at Charlton Athletic, graduating from their youth team in 2005, signing for Ebbsfleet United in the Conference National in 2006. After 94 appearances at Stonebridge Road, including winning the FA Trophy at Wembley, the midfielder went on to join Woking in the Summer of 2009. In 2010, Ricketts was made captain of Woking, and was part of the side that won promotion from the Conference South in 2011/12 and then secured their place in the top-tier of non-league football. After 244 appearances at Woking, the midfielder joined Boreham Wood in June 2016 where he was appointed Captain upon his arrival.

BOREHAM WOOD all competitions during 2018/19 season. A campaign he was awarded Managers Player, Players’ Player and Fans Player of the Year. The forward burst onto the main stage of the Emirates FA Cup when scoring a stunning hat-trick away at Tranmere Rovers back in November 2018.

MATT RHEAD Rhead played for non-league side Norton United close to his birth town before joining Kidsgrove Athletic ahead of the 2004–2005 season. He moved on to join Eastwood Town, where he ended the season as top goal scorer. He departed Eastwood to join Nantwich Town for the 2009–10 season before joining Congleton Town on an initial month's loan, which became permanent a month later. Rhead has been a key player in many promotions and a veteran of non-league football. Rhead joined Boreham Wood in February 2020 and was a key player in the clubs play-off run scoring his first goal against Halifax in the playoff Quarter Finals to win the game. COREY WHITELY Corey gained valuable senior men’s football experience locally at both Waltham Forest and Cheshunt, where he bagged 18 goals in 37 appearances. Whitely made the next step in his development within senior football joining Enfield Town where he went on to score 46 goals in 120 appearances. The Daggers took the plunge and signed the young striker, where he netted 16 goals earning a place within the 2016/17 National League Team of the Season. Whitely moved onto Ebbsfleet United in 2018, making 59 appearances and scoring 11 goals. At the end of the 2018/19 season, Whitely made the move into the Football League penning a two-year deal with League Two outfit Newport County. Ahead of the 2020/21 season Whitley signed a 1-year loan with Boreham Wood. SHAQUILE COULTHIRST Coulthirst, started his career as a youth team player at Tottenham Hotspur and

has a wealth of Football League experience with over 100 EFL appearances to his name already with Clubs such as Southend United, Peterborough United Wigan and Mansfield Town. The Posh signed Coulthirst in January 2016 where he made 35 appearances and joined Mansfield Town on loan at the start of 2017. In July of 2017 Coulthirst made a free transfer to National League Rivals Barnet. Shaquile was at the North London club for 3 seasons, leaving him as a free agent in the 2020/21 transfer window and The Wood moved quickly to secure Shaq’s signature on a permanent basis for the 2020/21 season. JUNIOR MORIAS Junior joined Wycombe Wanderers on scholarship terms in 2011, signed his first professional contract at Adam’s Park in 2012 after graduating from the Chairboy’s Academy. Junior joined The Wood on loan towards the back end of the 2013/14 season, scoring 8 goals in 15 appearances, departing Wycombe that summer where he would go on to join Boreham Wood permanently. Junior spent the 2018/19 season at Northampton Town, scoring 6 goals in 21 appearances at the Sixfields Stadium before St. Mirren of the Scottish Premiership came calling. Since signing for St. Mirren in the summer of 2019, Junior made 26 appearances. TYRONE MARSH The powerful forward began his career at Oxford United and made his professional debut at Elland Road against Leeds United back in August 2012. After a trio of loan moves; Marsh went on to feature for Ebbsfleet United, Torquay United and Dover Athletic before joining Macclesfield in 2017 playing a key part in their promotion to the Football League. Marsh departed from the Wood after our defeat vs. Harrogate in the National League Play Off Semi-finals and signed with Stevenage. However, Wood were able to sign Tyrone going in to the second half of the 2020/21 season on an 18 month deal.

The 3 points that we picked up at Solihull have been coming the past few games, and are obviously pleasing. We’ve probably not got what our performances have deserved recently but we have remained positive and confident knowing that if we kept putting in those performances as a team then the results would follow. It was especially pleasing to have got another clean sheet, and I thought as a team we defended brilliantly which is giving us the platform to build on. Im so pleased that Mac (Paul McCallum) got his goal, he hasn’t scored as many as he would’ve liked this season, but all strikers go through tough periods. His ability to score goals in this league shouldn’t be doubted, and he has proven over several seasons that if you create chances for him he will score. Hopefully that will give him the confidence to kick on now. We can’t be too reliant on him though, and other players need to step up, that’s not just the strikers but us in

midfielder too, which you’ve seen recently with the amount of bodies we are getting into the box. It’s a cliché, but defending really does start from the front, and we saw that on Tuesday night. It was important for our strikers to lock them down one side and their movement into midfield was very good, so we needed to be organised. I'm in there with them so I see it but a lot of people wouldn’t have seen how hard Smudge (Tom Smith) and Robbo (Matt Robinson) had to work off the ball, shuffling to plug gaps, and it’s these small details that come together to ease the pressure on the defence and GK. Any time you play Boreham Wood it’s a dangerous game, like all games in this league. They’re similar to us in that they probably haven’t got the results their performances have warranted recently so we expect a tough game, but we just need to concentrate on ourselves and start putting our own little run together which can start with back to back wins Saturday.

Paul McCallum’s second half strike was enough to ensure the Daggers got back to winning ways.

Despite early Dagenham pressure, Solihull warmed into the game, with James Ball and Callum Maycock creating chances. However, the Daggers could have easily gone into the break ahead, as Paul McCallum had two great chances, only for strong defending to deny him a deserved goal. McCallum finally beat the home defence early in the second half, firing a delicious Matt Robinson ball home from underneath the goalkeeper’s nose.

Despite late chances for substitute Kyle Hudlin, Dagenham were able to hang on for a well-deserved win. Wanting to put Saturday’s defeat to Yeovil behind them, the Daggers started brightly, winning a freekick on the edge of the area, but Wright’s set piece narrowly missed its target.

After a slow start, the hosts were beginning to settle into proceedings, with the visiting defence needing to be on their toes as the Moors looked to dominate aerially.

Approaching the tenth minute, Daryl McMahon’s men were pressing down the left hand side, as Angelo Balanta floated a cross into the box, aiming for the head of McCallum, only for the Moors’ defence to be alert to the danger, defending the attempt well.

Twenty minutes into the game, Solihull were beginning to show a little bit of an edge, as a strong attack down the right through James Ball and Ben Usher-Shipway freed Maycock into space. Seeing Sbarra free in the penalty area, he drove in a direct cross, forcing the Daggers’ defence into action.

Set pieces were the story of Solihull’s first half, as they looked to test Elliot Justham and his defence. However, the Daggers’ shot stopper was proving to be equal to their efforts, comfortably claiming a corner under pressure in the 29th minute. The hosts were adamant they were due a penalty after 31 minutes, after Usher-Shipway went down inside the box. After the referee waived his claims away, Ball won the ball back before trying to catch Justham out, seeing his shot deflected behind for a corner.

Angelo Balanta and Liam Gordon were linking up well down the left and almost fashioned the visitors' opening goal of the game with five minutes to play in the first half. Picking McCallum on the edge of the six-yard box, Gordon curled the ball in his direction, with the forward unable to direct his attempt on target. McCallum could have had a hattrick

just before the break, forcing his way past Tyrone Williams, allowing him to have clear space to shoot on goal. The Solihull defender made a good recovery to put him under pressure, forcing the striker’s shot to dribble inches wide of the foot of the post.

Immediately after the restart, the Daggers looked to be fired up, as McCallum played Tom Smith into space, with the Bath City loanee beating his man before thundering his shot narrowly over the crossbar, with the ‘keeper rooted to the spot. But Solihull were by no means settling for defending, as Jordan Cranston’s cross in the 50th minute almost found the head of two of his teammates, before the ball was cleared to safety.

With 56 mintues on the clock, the visitors finally found their way through the resolute Solihull defence. McCallum, who had a handful of chances to score in the first period, managed to find his mark, firing home from close range, after a pinpoint Robinson cross.

Solihull struggled to settle after going a goal down, and in the 67th minute they almost conceded a second. Brilliant passing play between Wright and Weston put the experienced winger in a position to cross, and after bullying his way past his marker, he almost picked Rance out at the near post, but a defender just beat him to the ball.

As the game entered the final 15 minutes, the Moors were still struggling to find a way past the Daggers’ back line. Having just been brought into the game, Cameron Archer thought he had a clear shot on goal from the edge of the box, but Elliott Johnson blocked the ball well with his leg.

In the 77th minute, having had little to do, Justham needed to be alert when Rooney turned well before firing on goal. Thankfully, the shot lacked power and the ball was tipped away from danger. Straight away at the other end, Daryl McMahon’s men could have very easily scored a second, after Balanta scuffed his shot from the edge of the area just wide, following another blistering run and cross from Weston, who was exploiting tiring defenders.

With time running out, the hosts were starting to throw everything they had at the Daggers, as Kyle Hudlin almost got his head to a looping cross, but Justham watched the ball as it sailed well over in the 85th minute.

But they were unable to break McMahon’s men down, as the Daggers deservedly secured an important win which ends a run of two successive defeats.

Tom Knowles’ last-gasp strike condemns Daggers to cruel defeat, as the visitors fail to capitalise on a dominant display.

A strong opening for the Daggers almost saw them take the lead in the 18th minute, with Matt Robinson’s header cleared off the line.The Glovers had chances of their own to score, as Rhys Murphy, Alex Bradley, and Reuben Reid all tested Elliot Justham in the visiting goal.

Robinson almost handed Daryl McMahon’s men all three points late in the game, after seeing his closerange strike clatter against the crossbar. But with Callum Reynolds given his marching orders in added time, the Glovers managed to snatch all three points, with Tom Knowles’ freekick the difference between the two sides.

After a quiet opening to the game, it was the Daggers who looked the more threatening, with Paul McCallum connecting with a tricky George Saunders cross in the seventh minute, forcing Glovers’ ‘keeper Adam Smith into a smart save. Moments later, the visitors thought they had the lead, after Liam Gordon linked up well with McCallum, before firing into the top right corner, only for the linesman to judge the fullback to have been offside.

Following on from his man of the match performance against Sutton United, Robinson came within inches of giving Daryl McMahon’s men the lead, getting his head to a brilliant Myles Weston cross, only to see the ball desperately cleared off the line by Worthington. Despite Dagenham dominating the early proceedings, Yeovil produced the clearest chance of the game in the 21st minute, having three golden opportunities on the Daggers’ goal. After Murphy and Bradley both had powerful efforts excellently saved by Justham, Reid saw his off-balance shot fly narrowly over the crossbar.

The Glovers were beginning to turn the screw slightly, as the game approached the half hour mark. Having dispossessed the visitors in the middle of the pitch, the hosts broke forward, allowing Josh Neufville to fire a well-struck effort towards the bottom corner, forcing Justham into another smart reaction save.

However, the Daggers remained dangerous, with Saunders almost capitalising on a defensive mistake from Max Hunt, winning the ball before working it to the corner of the box, only to see his rasping shot parried by Smith. Neufville was looking to have an impact on the game after the restart, with the attacker dribbling his way past one or two Dagenham defenders to get into the penalty area, before the ball is eventually cleared to safety.The Luton Town loanee was causing the visitors a number of issues, dribbling his way through the Daggers’ defence in the 56th minute, before hooking his shot across the face of goal, with no Glovers on hand to tap the ball in at the far post. Having started the second period on the back foot, McMahon’s men were warming into the game and in the 58th minute, they almost broke the deadlock. Another dizzying run and cross from Weston found Robinson once again in a dangerous position inside the

penalty area, only for the midfielder to turn the ball onto the crossbar. The combination of Robinson and Weston was proving to be successful for McMahon, as the two midfielders linked up once again in the 62nd minute, allowing Weston the opportunity to cross. After his ball was deflected for a corner, Dean Rance could only direct a poorly defended set piece well over.

Weston in particular was having his way with the Glovers’ defence and in the 69th minute, his burst of pace down the right-hand side saw him gifted acres of space to set up a chance on goal. With the ball finding McCallum on the edge of the six-yard box, the home shotstopper was forced into a magnificent save to keep the score level.

In the 83rd minute, Dagenham captain Rance once again found himself in a position to shoot, after controlling Balanta’s cross well, who received the ball on the right wing from Weston, but his shot was deflected wide by the outstretched leg of Jimmy Smith.

With the Daggers throwing everything at Yeovil, they left themselves vulnerable to the counter, as the hosts still remained confident of taking the lead. In the 86th minute, a set piece into the box was claimed by Reid, who spun on the spot before firing at goal. With the ball set to find its way into the top corner, Justham made a spectacular save, getting his fingertips to the goal bound shot, deflecting it from its target.

The hosts were gifted a golden opportunity to snatch the win, after winning a free kick on the edge of the box, resulting in Reynolds being sent off. Stepping up to take it, substitute Knowles whipped the ball around the wall and into the back of the net, leaving Justham with no chance. When sat on the bench or in the stands, it can be tough for a player to watch his teammates take to the field of play, especially when results are not going the right way. Waiting for that opportunity to get back into the team can often be a test of patience. This has certainly been the case for Will Wright, whose appearance off the bench against Yeovil Town last Saturday was his first taste of action since the Daggers’ FA Trophy win over Ebbsfleet United on December 19.

“It has been a long time coming for me personally to get back in the side,” said Wright after playing the whole 90 minutes in the 1-0 win over Solihull Moors. “I have had to be patient but now it has come, I am glad we have got the win and the clean sheet to back me up.

“Hopefully I can keep my place for the weekend and the coming weeks so now it is down to me to keep performing and to keep that shirt.” After Callum Reynolds’ late dismissal at Huish Park, Wright was brought on by Daryl McMahon to shore up the Daggers’ defence as they fought in vain to claim something from the game.

While Dagenham were unsuccessful on that occasion, McMahon stuck with the defender against Solihull Moors, and would have no doubt been impressed by his performance, helping the club to secure a much-needed win. “I spoke to the gaffer recently and he has been happy with the way I have been training so it has given me that confidence,” said the 23-year-old.

“Knowing that my time was coming, I just needed to be patient and then take my form from the training ground on to the pitch. “There were a few shaky moments at Solihull but overall, I am pretty happy with my performance and obviously the clean sheet backs that up.” Tuesday evening’s victory at the SportNation.bet Stadium ended a run of two successive defeats, leaving the Daggers without back to back wins since late December.

However, in the losses to Sutton United and Yeovil, Dagenham more than matched their opponents, leaving both games scratching their heads as to how they failed to pick up at least a point.

When asked about what the team has done to improve their performances on the pitch, Wright was quick to highlight how breaking things down, and the form of Elliot Justham, have been the key.

“I would say we have probably stripped it back down to basics,” he concluded.

“I think we are a little bit cuter and we work a bit better with our running. We are a bit more drilled and at the end of the day, we are harder to beat and harder to break down. “I think you saw that at Solihull. I can’t really remember Elliot having to make a save, other than the one off a deflected shot. He has been great again this season and has saved us on several occasions, but for him to have pretty much a night off is nice for us to be able to do that.” This season, like no other, has seen the fixture schedule heavily congested, with most clubs playing both Saturday and Tuesday for most of the campaign, leaving plenty of opportunities for players to impress their managers. In the month of March, the Daggers are about as busy as they could possibly be, as McMahon’s men get set to play a total of eight games, nine if you include Tuesday’s win over Solihull Moors.

But with opportunities of rest few and far between, Wright admitted that the relentless period of fixtures is something he is looking forward to, starting with today’s game against Boreham.

“I prefer it to be honest. The quick turnaround and just playing games means you can get into a rhythm or a flow,” he admitted. “If you look at the way Yeovil have gone about their last 13 games, they have ten wins so hopefully we can pick that form up in our remaining 18 league games. You never know, we could catch on the back door of the play-offs, it is definitely something that we are working towards.

“I know one of the lads very well at Boreham Wood, he is an old mate of mine from when I was at Hitchin, and I know they have been struggling to score of late, a bit like us to be honest. “It is a big six pointer for us really because if we can claw them back out of that pack and leapfrog them, then it puts us in a great position.

Harry Beautyman’s last gasp penalty breaks Daggers’ hearts as hosts suffer 2-1 defeat.

Sutton took the lead midway through the first half, with Harry Beautyman converting from the penalty spot after Isaac Olaofe was fouled by Callum Reynolds. Liam Gordon’s effort in the 60th minute drew the Daggers level, with the fullback powering Myles Weston’s cross in at the far post.

Both sides pressed forward in search of a second goal, with Matt Robinson and Tobi Sho-Silva creating the best of the chances. But in the dying moments, Beautyman stepped up so score his second penalty of the day, following a foul on David Ajiboye, breaking Daggers’ hearts. Riding high on confidence after the previous week’s win, the Daggers started strongly and after only 90 seconds, Matt Robinson came close to opening the scoring, heading Weston’s cross over the bar from the centre of the box. Wanting to make a fast start, Daryl McMahon’s men were piling the pressure on the Sutton defence. Two minutes in, following a great period of play, George Saunders was played into space, before seeing his angled shot dribble agonisingly wide of the left-hand post.

Dagenham were looking dangerous and after Beautyman sliced the U’s first effort of the game wide, they burst forward, with Weston doing brilliantly to win the ball off a defender in the eighth minute, before whipping his cross in to the back post, just beyond the reach of Gordon.

Sutton were beginning to warm into the game, as Robert Milsom saw his free kick in the 13th minute fly off target, before trying his luck from range three minutes later, with Elliot Justham more than a match for the underpowered effort.

Despite their strong start, it was Sutton who were presented with the best chance of the game, after Olaofe went down under a challenge from Reynolds just inside the box. After a short delay, Beautyman stepped up to fire the ball right down the middle, handing Sutton the lead in the 24th minute.

Approaching the 30th minute, the visitors were beginning to take control of the game. Having denied David Ajiboye with a fine stop, Elliot Justham was on hand with a remarkable reaction save to prevent the ball, which deflected off Charlee Adams, from sneaking in at the bottom corner. However, McMahon’s Daggers were still well in the game, as Weston’s free kick in the 39th minute, from just outside the penalty area, forced Sutton ‘keeper Dean Bouzanis into some quick thinking to keep the ball out.

Dagenham were still looking for the breakthrough as half time fast approached. With pressure mounting, George Saunders almost gave them a leveller with a speculative effort from long range, but Bouzanis was able to pull off another smart save. The visitors began the second period on top, with Omar

Only three minutes after that opening, the hosts went one better to deservedly level the score. Weston, who caused the Sutton defence plenty of trouble in the first half, whipped a beautiful cross into the far post, with Gordon and Paul McCallum laying in wait. The ball eventually found the head of the Bolton Wanderers loanee, who followed up his goal against Bromley with an identical effort.

The hosts’ tails were up as they looked to take the lead against the promotion chasing U’s. Weston once again was at the heart of another opportunity on goal in the 66th minute, collecting the ball from McCallum before fizzing a shot across the face of goal from just inside the area.

In what was becoming a very open game, both sides were looking threatening. In the 71st minute, Sho-Silva, who had just been brought on, turned well to fire at Justham’s goal, with the Daggers’ shot stopper initially spilling the ball before collecting it at the second attempt.

Two minutes later, the Daggers responded to that Sutton chance with a great opportunity for a second goal. Having sent his marker sliding with a smart turn, Weston’s ball into the box was deflected up in the air off a defender, presenting Robinson with an excellent chance to fire on goal. Under pressure, his volley drifted agonisingly the wrong side of the post.

Entering the final ten minutes of the game, the only side looking like scoring was Dagenham, as Robinson fired narrowly over from close range, following another fantastic delivery which only just missed the head of McCallum.

But with time almost up, Sutton were awarded their second penalty of the game. Having broken free at goal, Ajiboye went down inside the area, as the referee pointed to the spot. Stepping up once again, Beautyman fired home to snatch all three points at the death.

The club would like to place on record its thanks and appreciation to our departing Media Officer, George Benson, who leaves the Club to join our friends over at West Ham United Women. George has spent 2 and a half seasons with the Daggers, originally joining as a volunteer during the 2017/18 campaign, before working his way up to running the Media department. George has been instrumental in aiding with communication with the fan base, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic where he has gone above and beyond to help out in all areas around the Club. George leaves with our utmost gratitude for everything he has done for the Club and we wish him all the best in his new adventure with West Ham Women and we look forward to seeing him back at Victoria Road soon.
