President’s Message

behalf of District 16, I would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year filled with joy, health and success. Here's to a bright and wonderful 2026. This is my last President’s Message. It has been my honor and privilege to serve as your president for the past two years.

North American Bridge Championships (NABC)

Jump Start Bridge

Patty Tucker continues to excel with the Jump Start Bridge program. This initiative (which includes setting up bridge exhibits and booths at conferences across the country for Math Teachers and Teachers of Gifted Students) is achieving remarkable success. Most recently, the program traveled to Grapevine for the Gifted conference held December 2–5.

BJ Sanders of Austin hosted the Jump Start Bridge booth, along with Earnestine Broyles, Jean Durocher, and Linda Griffith. The team’s role was to encourage teachers to bring bridge to their school students.

District 16 players performed well at the San Francisco NABC. Kristen Onsgard and Petra Hamman won the Whitehead Women’s Pairs, and Eddie Wold was on the winning team of the Mixed Swiss Teams. Please see the detailed NABC report in this issue.

BJ reported that they played hours of bridge, and many of the teachers gathered around, fascinated to kibitz or participate. Jump Start provides all the necessary materials for the instructors (e.g., duplicate boards, bidding boxes, cards, videos and workbooks for students and teachers) all at no cost. She said you could see the teachers’ eyes light up when they saw the step-by-step way they could ease their students (and themselves) into playing Bridge.

NABC – 2028

We are excited to learn that Austin’s Unit 207 will once again host the NABC in 2028. Region 9 Director Rebecca Brown shared that Austin had done such a great job in 2021 that they were invited continued on 6

Regional Director's Update

Region

The ACBL Board of Directors held its fall in-person meetings from Sunday, November 23 to Tuesday, November 25 in San Francisco. The Board, Committees, and Task Forces continue to meet regularly online via Microsoft Teams™ and Zoom®.

Finance

The 2026 operating and capital budgets were approved. Budgeted revenues for 2026 total approximately $18.188K while estimated operating and administrative expenses total approximately $18.168K; an estimated gain of approximately $20K.

The capital budget totals $780K, the majority of which will be spent on the continued migration of applications from the AS400™ to Back Office. It is anticipated that this project will be completed in the fall of 2026.

Membership

The November 2025 report indicates a 7% decline in total membership, falling from 128,622 last year to 119,618 today. This decrease is accompanied by a slight dip in new members, with YTD sign-ups reaching 5,663, down from 6,181 in 2024. However, these figures are balanced by a significant expansion in new guest memberships, which rose from 2,813 last year to 7,524 this year – a growth of 167.47%. This substantial interest represents a vital path to recovery as we work to advance guest members from initial engagement to long-term commitment.

Combating Online Cheating

The ACBL continues to utilize EDGAR (Everyone Deserves a Game Above Reproach) to detect online cheating. Two large, new runs, comprising almost 20,000 players’ numbers were submitted in August and September.

Since February 1, 2024, 31,057 players have been submitted for screening. Of those, 1,462 players identified by EDGAR have been charged or have received Official Warnings. The current online cheating rate, which includes all players (members, non-members, and inactive accounts), is estimated to be between 3 and 4%. This number will decrease as all players who

were subject to Player Memos for purported ethical violations have now been run.

We estimate the final rate will be ~3%.

Disciplinary actions have included Official Warnings (431); Fast Track Discipline (FTD) (719); Negotiated Resolutions (NR) (50); Management Adjudications (7); and Institute of Bridge Arbitration (IBA) resolutions (44); with 35 resignations with pending charges, and 139 pending cases.

Appeals & Charges Committee

The committee chair reported on three approved NR. Two of these cases involved conduct violations at tournaments; one was a repeat offender who agreed to a 6-month suspension for acts of abuse or violence and rude behavior. The other player received a 120day suspension for public accusations of cheating and improper conduct at the Summer NABC in Philadelphia. A third NR was for Misuse of Hand Records. He was a Virtual Club director who made use of his access to the Common Game records to cheat in online games. He agreed to a 2-year suspension. This person was still directing at the time his behavior was detected, so Management issued a Suspension Pending Hearing (SPH) until the case was resolved.

To view Hearing Reports and the Under Discipline List, go to the ACBL's ethics page. This information is updated several times daily.

NABC Business Model Update

Following the Summer 2025 meetings in Philadelphia, this update details the Championships for All initiative. This strategic restructuring of the NABC business model aims to improve operational efficiency, bolster financial sustainability, and elevate the tournament experience for players of all skill levels.

Key initiatives include:

• Consolidating events, streamlining schedules, and right-sizing venues to optimize staffing and volunteer time.

• Implementing pre-registration and tiered pricing to align fees with participation and facility costs.

The Most Beautiful Game in the World ♠

Welcome2026! The most beautiful game in the world has a lot to offer this year and we really hope you play more than ever. We wish that all of your wishes come true and that your life has lots of good games, joy and happiness.

Since we have established that this 2026 will be filled with joy and bridge, a good starting point is to begin by working on your current partnerships.

As I mentioned in my last column, partnerships thrive on strategy and trust and they need us to invest time in them.

So, how is the best way to do it? Here are some pointers that will help you to strengthen or build a successful partnership:

• Assess Compatibility Early: Play some practice hands on BBO™ or locally and make notes tracking clashes and/or hesitations. Discuss core styles and bidding philosophies.

• Map Bidding Tendencies: Deepen the conversations about bidding, talk about your overall approach to things such as preemptive bids and responses, overcalling style, and anything else that is pertinent.

• Discuss Defense: Do the same for leads and signals.

• Create a Shared Notes Document: You and partner can work on this document during practice sessions. Keep adding notes. It does not need to be long but it must to include everything you have discussed: conventions, leads and carding.

• Schedule Regular Reviews: Meet at least once a month to update the agreement post-tournaments. If meeting F2F proves to be challenging, you can do it over Zoom or any other online platform.

• Practice with Purpose and Variety: Dedicate sessions to different topics: declaring hands, bidding, etc. Use apps like Cuebids® and BBO.

• Foster Trust through Feedback Loops: End every session with positives first. Track progress in a shared journal to celebrate milestones like "10% fewer bidding errors”.

A good partnership is more than a secret weapon. Many times we focus on bidding systems and declarer play, but true advancement comes with partnership understanding.

Take time work on your partnerships. Go over conventions, agreements, and carding methods. Take time to talk about what worked and what didn’t. Sometimes, the smallest tweak can turn a good partnership into a great one.

Remember that the more, the merrier! We are always better together.

North American Pairs (NAP) /D16 Finals in January ♠

TheD16 NAP Finals will be held January 10-11 at the Bridge Center of Austin. There are four flights this year:

0-750 (NLM), 0-3000, 0-6000 and 6000+. If there are 8 or less tables in a given flight, such flight(s) will finish on Saturday.

This event is NOT in conjunction with the Austin Sectional (held 1-4 January).

You can see the flyer for more details.

Charity Report ♠

ACBL Charity Foundation (Foundation)

The Foundation was formed in 1964 to support qualified 501(c)3 charitable organizations. These organizations contribute to the strength and vitality of our communities. The Foundation seeks to build strong partnerships and lasting value in our communities by supporting organizations that improve educational and economic opportunities.

This year D16 will not be receiving funds from the Foundation so we are not going to be selecting a charity recipient. In 2024, D16 received $10,000. We did not receive funds in 2025. The Foundation rotates the amounts to the different districts each year.

Hopefully, District 16 will receive a 2026 charitable contribution from the Foundation to be distributed to our selected recipients in 2027.

Grass Roots Fund Games

The district’s Grass Roots Fund games raise monies ($4 / table) for two purposes:

• Support for our NAP and GNT players who represent us at the national level.

• Donations to each unit’s selected local charity or charities.

For the NAP and GNT games, those fees should be sent to D16 Executive Treasurer James Southerland. You can reach James via email to learn how to convey those revenues.

For local charity games, those fees should be sent to each unit’s treasurer for distribution to the unit-selected (by the unit’s board) charity or charities.

The 2025 NAP and GNT Grass Roots games were held on March 10 and 13.

The 2026 Grass Roots schedule is:

• March 2 & 4: NAP and GNT (remitted to D16’s executive treasurer)

• March 3 & 6: Unit-selected charity (remitted to unit’s treasurer)

These games are listed on the D16 calendar.

Grand National Teams ♠

TheGNT season is coming soon. There is no unit qualifying required, so you can proceed straight to District Finals. Get your team together and meet us in Dallas or Houston in the Spring.

Four levels will compete in the GNT’s District Finals. The four winners of that event (and possibly more – see below) go on to compete at the GNT Finals in Minneapolis in July 2026. The top flight – the Championship Flight – is open to anyone who is an ACBL member in good standing and who resided in District 16 as of September 1, 2025. To play in Flight A, each member of the team must also have had fewer than 6000 masterpoints as of the August 6, 2025 posting. The Flight B cutoff is 3000 masterpoints. Flight C is limited to non-life masters with fewer than 750 masterpoints. Each team may consist of four, five or six players, but each player must be eligible for the flight in which the team is competing.

The District Finals will be split into two venues. Flights A & C will be held at the Dallas Spring Sectional on March 20-21. The Championship & B Flights will be held at the Houston Election Sectional on April 11-12. (If three or fewer teams compete in

any flight, that event will conclude in one day.) The winners from each flight will advance to the National GNT Finals in Minneapolis in July and will be eligible for an expense stipend if they actually play in the NABC. Note also that if Flights B and/or C have eight or more teams, the top two teams will qualify to compete at the National.

To play in the District Finals, preregistration is required. While more details will be provided closer to the events, registration merely requires emailing the team’s details to Scott Nason at sdnason@sbcglobal.

net

The stipend given to each winning team is now $2400, to be shared equally by each member who actually plays in Minneapolis, while the second-place award is $1800. In addition, District 16 will reimburse card fees as follows: Beginning in round three at the NABC, each player will be reimbursed for their card fees at the rate charged to those who stay in the host hotel, regardless of where each player chooses to stay. Note that card fees are waived by the ACBL in rounds one and two for Flights A, B, and C, but not for the Championship Flight.

I left My Hearts in San Francisco ♠

TheNABC returned to San Francisco’s Marriott Marquis this fall, beginning on Thanksgiving Day. It was well-attended, supplemented by several evening activities, and typical weather in SF, rarely getting above 60 degrees, but often sunny and no rain.

Thanksgiving Day

Play got underway on Thanksgiving day, slowly as usual, with a few games. In a break with my articles over the past several NABCs, I will mostly include D16 players who did well in non-Nationally-rated events in a long list at the end of the article, only mentioning the occasional interesting or very impressive results in the text.

Friday

The Nail Life Masters kicked off the parade of NABC+ events on Friday, where the District’s top qualifiers were Kristen Onsgard (Dallas) and Jim Johnsen (Frisco) sitting in 23rd. They moved up to 10th in the third session and finished 9th in the Finals. Ariel Smid and Sandra Sarnow (Huixquilucan, MX) turned in a great final session to move up to 28th.

The Soloway KOs completed their qualifiers, with several District players making it through to the KO rounds – and several surprises who didn’t, in this extremely competitive field. Eric Greco (Frisco) qualified first as part of the Nickell team. Mike Passell (Plano) was 8th.

Saturday

Also on Saturday, David Worrall (Quitman) was the only D16 qualifier in the NABC 0-3000 Pairs. The next day, he completed a fine event finishing 8th.

Sunday

On Sunday, the Soloway round of 32 was a tough one for D16. Eric Greco was the only one to survive to the round of 16, with both Mike Passell and Lynn

Baker (Austin) losing.

In the Super Senior Pairs, the Houston pair of Harry Selldin and Sherry Withers qualified 10th and Joan Jackson (Dallas) qualified in 13th. The Mitchell Board-a-Match Teams got underway, with several D16 players in the top 20. Venkat Koneru and Greg Hinze (San Antonio) were tied for 13th, as was Cenk Tuncok (Carrollton). Yifu Ouyang (Dallas) was tied for 19th.

In the Top-Flight Swiss Teams, the Herreras –Patricia (Mexico) and her father, Gonzalo (Naucalpan,MX) – were victorious.

In the finals of the Super Senior Pairs, the Selldin/ Withers pair fell somewhat from their qualifying rank but still finishing a strong 17th. Joan Jackson moved up to finish 16th.

In the Mitchell BAM Teams, the District’s top finisher was Finn Kolesnik (Austin), fresh off of his success at the Puerto Vallarta Regional, where he went over 10000 masterpoints to become the youngest Grand Life Master ever! Finn was 5th in the Mitchell. Jeff McKee fished 12th.

Monday

In Monday’s Open Pairs, James La Fountain and Pat McMullin (Georgetown) were 6th.

The Monday’s 0-3000 Swiss, Stefanie Scott (Carrollton) was the top d16 player finishing in the 5th spot.

In Monday’s Top-Flight Swiss, Lynn Baker (Austin) was 2nd. Mike Passell (Plano) and Eddie Wold (Houston) were 5th. Hua Yang and Yan Song (Plano) were 4th in B.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, D16’s last entrant in the Soloways was bounced, as Greco’s team was upset in the quarterfinals. In the first round of the Women’s Wager Pairs, D16 took several of the top qualifying spots, including leaders Kristen Onsgard and Petra Hamman (Carrollton) and Nancy Passell (Plano) in the third spot.

Alex Han (Katy) was 6th in the 0-3000 Swiss Teams. Gonzalo and Patricia Herrera were 6th in the 0-10000 Imp Pairs.

Top qualifiers in the 0-6000 Mini-Blue Ribbons included Bill and Donna Garrard (Irving).

Wednesday

On Wednesday Kristen Onsgard and Petra Hamman completed their wire-to-wire win in the Wager Women’s Pairs and brought home D16’s first NABC+ titles in the tournament. It was Kristen’s second NABC+ win in as many years. It was Petra’s 11th. Also in this event, Nancy Passell finished 13th and Paddy Fiorino (Missouri City) was 14th.

In the first day of the 0-10000 Fast Pairs Melody Gann (Arlington) and Nancy Peterson (Euless) qualified in the 4th spot and Jin Chu (Plano) qualified 9th. Top qualifiers in the first day of the Kaplan Blue Ribbons were Greg Hinze and Venkat Koneru in 11th and Pawel Hanus (Carrollton) and Ari Sippola (Richardson) in 14th. On day two of the 0-6000 Mini-Blue Ribbons, the Garrards continued to lead D16 qualifiers in 17th.

Thursday

Thursday marked the conclusion of the three-day Blue Ribbons. In the Kaplan, Bob Hamman finished 8th, Finn Kolesnik was 11th, Hinze/Koneru were 17th, and Hanus/Sippola were 22nd.

In the 0-6000 Mini-Blues, the Garrards moved up to finish in 6th place. The Herreras were 11th in the 0-10000 Fast Pairs.

On the first day of the Mixed Pais, the top D16 qualifiers were Ariel Smid and Sandra Sarnow in 18th.

Also, on Thursday Christopher Steele (Austin), playing in the Top-Flight Pairs with Nathan Yee (Houston), won enough points to become a Life Master. And Sam Dodson (Houston) won the Mid-Flight Pais.

Second Friday

On Friday, the Keohane North American Swiss Teams and the Reisinger BAM Teams got underway. Lynn Baker led all qualifiers in the Keohane and Eric

Greco qualified 2nd in the Riesinger.

The NABC+ Mixed Pairs concluded with Eddie Wold leading all D16 players in 28th.

Second Saturday

Saturday was another mostly qualifying day. Lynn Baker slipped to third going into the final day of the Keohane, while husband Sam Dinkin (Austin) moved up to the 8th spot. Heading into the final day of the Reisinger, Greco had moved up to first place and Bob Hamman was in the 16th spot.

On the first day of the NABC+ Mixed Swiss, Eddie Wold led district qualifiers in the 3rd spot. And in the NABC 0-6000 Pairs, Ari Sippola and Pawel Hanus were in 10th.

Last Day

Sunday marked the end of the SF NABC, and of course, included the finals in several NABC+ events. D16 turned in a strong finish, led by a win in the Mixed Swiss for Eddie Wold, Robert Morris (Houston) and Shawn Quinn (Sugar Land) were 8th.

There were several high finishers in the Keohane Swiss Teams. Mike Passell was 3rd, Sam Dinkin 7th, Finn Kolesnik 8th, Venkat Koneru 12th, and Lynn Baker and Cenk Tuncok 15th. And Eric Greco was 6th in the Reisinger.

Summary

In summary, there were many fine performances from D16, including national titles for Kristen Onsgard, Petra Hamman and Eddie Wold (See the president’s message on page 1.). Finn Kolesnik led in the masterpoint race, on the strength of strong finishes in the Keohane and the Kaplan Blue Ribbon. Erec Greco was second.

All in all, it was a well-run, fun and successful NABC. Tomi Storey and I – who will co-chair the NABC in Dallas in March 2027 – made connections, marketed our event and brought home some ideas as we plan for our national in 15 months. Volunteers are needed and if you are willing to help, please let Tomi or me know. In the meantime, hope to see you in Saint Louis.

Fun Story from the November 1981 San Francisco NABC

About 40 years ago I attended a San Francisco NABC with some San Diego friends. One, a fellow named Jim Backstrom (RIP) was a good player. We agreed to play the first day’s regional Open Pairs. In those days of $10 card fees and $30 room rates the

attendance was twice what it is now. We were doing very well up until late in the second session. The opponents got into an unlucky contract and we defended well to get our tricks and ruff some of declarer’s. When Jim gave me my second ruff he did so with a high card, generally asking me to return the higher ranking suit – of which I had the boss card in that suit. I thought about it and decided there was no way Jim could have another continued on

D16 2026 ACBL Goodwill & Charity Committee Appointees

Each year, the president of District 16 is allowed to select two district recipients for recognition and membership in each of the ACBL Goodwill and Charity Committees.

ACBL Aileen Osofsky Goodwill Committee 2026 D16 Recipients

It is with great pleasure that I announce Byron Fackenthall and Mary Ann White as members of the national ACBL Aileen Osofsky Goodwill Committee. This is an honorary lifetime membership bestowed upon individuals who exhibit a spirit of courtesy, kindness and tact at the bridge table.

Byron Fackenthall was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He grew up in a military family and attended Rutgers University, where he participated in the ROTC program. Upon graduation, he entered the United States Air Force and embarked on a distinguished 22-year military career. During his service, Byron earned two master’s degrees, one in political science and one in business. In 1965, Byron married Chloe Ella Fackenthall and

together they raised three children. While stationed in San Antonio, he was introduced to bridge in a neighborhood group.

After retiring from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel, Byron settled in Houston and worked as a Service Manager with Xerox. After 14 years, he retired and began playing duplicate.

Byron’s approach to life is deeply rooted in his Christian faith, which guides his belief that his purpose is “to make others feel better about themselves.” Anyone who has played with Byron knows this is not just a sentiment, it is how he lives. He has a remarkable ability to lift people up, calm their worries, and bring a smile to their faces.

At the Bridge Academy of West Houston, Byron serves as the Thursday Morning Ambassador, welcoming players who arrive without a partner or whose partner doesn’t show up. His endless patience, especially with newer players, is legendary. Partners consistently remark that he makes them feel comfortable, supported, and valued.

Mary Ann White was born in Ohio to a family that moved frequently, eventually settling in Texas, where she completed high school and attended Texas Christian University (go Frogs!). She majored in Accounting, became a CPA, and worked in public accounting with Price Waterhouse before holding positions in the oil and gas industry. Later, as an Executive Editor for Thomson Reuters, she authored and co-authored several accounting books. Despite her professional success, her greatest pride and joy are her two children, Michelle and Bill.

Mary Ann’s parents taught her to play bridge, and although she “tinkered” with it for years, her passion truly emerged when she discovered duplicate bridge. She began playing about 19 years ago at the Arlington

Duplicate Bridge Club to keep her mind active after turning 50. The game quickly became more than a pastime. It became a source of community, challenge, and lifelong friendships.

For the past 11 years, Mary Ann has lived in Lake Chapala, Mexico, where she plays and teaches at the Lake Chapala Duplicate Bridge Club. She currently serves as President of Unit 205, helps plan the Puerto Vallarta Regional and Ajijic Valentine Sectional tournaments, has played internationally with the Mexican Women's Team, and regularly attends tournaments throughout Mexico. She has also given her time on multiple occasions as a presenter for the D16 I/N Lecture Series.

What distinguishes Mary Ann most is her personal character. She is consistently calm, unfailingly kind, and always willing to help. Whether teaching, mentoring, or quietly supporting a project, she brings steadiness, generosity, and warmth to everyone around her. Her exceptional organizational skills ensure that any task, large or small, is approached with thoughtful planning and unwavering reliability.

Mary Ann embodies the spirit of goodwill through her kindness, dedication, and gracious leadership. Her contributions enrich the Lake Chapala Duplicate Bridge Club and make her a cherished member of the D16 bridge community.

ACBL Charitable Recognition Appointees

2026 D16 Recipients

I am also delighted to announce Nicola (Nicci) Beninger and Lauri Laufman as the recipients of the ACBL Charitable Recognition Award. This prestigious lifetime honor is awarded to individuals who actively engage in and/or encourage others to participate in charitable endeavors.

NicciBeninger was born in England and raised in Canada, where her father’s military career meant frequent moves and a family bridge table that was never far away. She began “filling in” on hands as early as age seven and discovered duplicate bridge in 1979 when a fellow teacher invited her to a local club on Vancouver Island. Now retired in Mexico, Nicci continues to enjoy the friendships and community that bridge brings.

Nicci’s charitable impact is most strongly felt through the Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club, where she currently serves as president. Her leadership focuses on improving health, sanitation, and education for under-

served indigenous communities around Lake Chapala.

Nicci is project leader for the Ojo de Agua sanitation initiative, a three-year, $145,000 effort that replaces raw sewage discharge into Lake Chapala with a gravity-fed system using a septic tank and wetland filtration garden. She also serves on the advisory board for Ojo de Agua’s First Aid Station, helping establish a functioning triage center.

As a board member for the La Cuesta Medical Centre, Nicci is helping guide a two-year renovation and equipment project that will bring essential medical services to the region between Mezcala and San Pedro Itzicán.

Additionally, she sponsors two students through the SAFE (Save a Future through Education) program and, three years ago, founded an annual posada fundraiser supporting families in Tepehua, Chapala’s poorest barrio. This year’s event will provide Christmas Eve meals for 175 families.

Nicci’s sustained commitment to service embodies the spirit of this award.

Lauri Laufman is known for two phrases that define her character: “yes” and “how can I assist?” – a spirit of service inspired by her mother and grandmothers, all active community volunteers. That family legacy has guided Lauri throughout a lifetime of giving back.

Her volunteer work spans many organizations, including Special Olympics, Caring Critters, Special Pals, and the American Cancer Society. For 25 years, she also served on the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Special Children’s Committee, helping create positive experiences for children with special needs.

Professionally, Lauri spent more than 30 years in promotional marketing, where she helped businesses and nonprofits strengthen their branding and recognize employees through corporate gifts and apparel. She served as president of her local industry association and participated on several national committees and advisory groups.

Since discovering duplicate bridge in 2004, Lauri has brought the same dedication to the bridge community. She served two terms on the Unit 174 Board (2007-2010 and 2017-2022), holding roles including Secretary, Vice President, President, and co-chair of the 2019 and 2020 Houston Lone Star Regionals. She has also served on the D16 Board since 2020.

Alzheimer’s fundraising remains one of her deepest commitments. After supporting the Alzheimer’s Association fundraiser, The Longest Day, for many years, she stepped up during the 2020 COVID-19 closures to help clubs continue their fundraising efforts. Since joining the Bridge Academy of West Houston’s advisory board in 2022, she has chaired it’s The Longest Day activities – bringing leadership, creativity, and energy to a cause close to her heart.

Lauri’s enthusiasm, teamwork, and passion for service embody the spirit of this recognition.

The Fall 2028 NABC in Austin will serve as the pilot for this streamlined model. Its success will be evaluated over two years, using participation trends, budget outcomes, and member feedback to maintain an adaptable and inclusive approach.

NABC Site Selected: Summer 2031

The Board approved the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas for the Summer 2031 NABC due to availability, projected profitability and waived resort fees.

Continuing Online Events at In-Person Regionals

The Board eliminated the Codification requirement (Chapter IX, Section 6) that permitted online events to be held in conjunction with in-person regionals.

This change replaces a "one-size-fits-all" mandate with a flexible approach centered on local sponsor autonomy. Removing this language does not prohibit online events; rather, it empowers local organizers to decide if an online component is right for their specific tournament.

Going forward, the process will focus on:

• Sponsor Decision-Making: The final determination to host this online event will rest with the local sponsoring organization.

• Management Consultation: Management will serve as a strategic partner, working directly with sponsors to evaluate cost impacts and identify the most suitable, effective platform for their needs.

Refining Sectional Tournament Guidelines

The board continues to evaluate Local Sectionals, a tournament category that enables units to host lower-cost tournaments using certified local directors. Current discussions address concerns regarding fairness – specifically private clubs operating these tournaments for profit – as well as variable director costs and the potential impact on standard sectionals and masterpoint structures.

Proposed adjustments include allowing ACBL directors to staff nearby local sectionals, raising table limits beyond 30 (with the addition of assistant directors), and clarifying the codified distinctions between Local and Non-Life Master Sectionals.

A uniform solution is unlikely, as discussions will continue with the goal of establishing a comprehensive structure for tournaments by the end of 2026.

GNT Financial Review & Chargeback Adjustments

Management reported that the ACBL will cover Championship Flight entry fees for the first two days of Grand National Teams (GNT) events. In accor-

dance with existing policy, costs for days three through five will remain the responsibility of the districts via chargebacks.

During this review, Management discovered a long-standing formula error that resulted in districts being undercharged for approximately 10 years. Correcting this error will result in higher chargebacks for several districts, particularly smaller ones with limited grassroots funding.

To mitigate this impact, the board reached a consensus to forgive all negative GNT chargeback balances for a one-year period, providing districts with a transition window to implement proven ways to help raise monies to accommodate these higher costs. Moving forward, chargebacks will be applied correctly.

Management will implement an education and communication plan to assist districts in expanding grassroots fundraising and the sharing of best practices. The goal is to support the continued growth of the GNT while maintaining a sustainable financial balance for both the ACBL and its districts.

Support for Unit Presidents

The ACBL Unit Presidents Handbook is complete. This concise online resource provides guidance for ACBL Unit Presidents, incorporating the latest programs, policies and resources available from the ACBL. Access the Handbook.

Governance Committee

Governance continues to streamline the ACBL Codification, the central repository of board-approved rules and regulations. By shifting operational details out of the Codification, the committee aims to provide greater clarity and transparency regarding the regulations that impact members.

The Committee completed and the board approved the Board Resource Manual (Motion 253-GV05). This internal guide serves as the definitive reference for governance, procedural, ethical, and administrative matters of the board.

Following this project, Codification, Chapter IVBoard Procedures, was replaced by the newly revised Chapter IV: Governance and Operations (Motion 253GV04), with the exception of the committee sections which are being revised.

Looking ahead to 2026, upcoming Codification deliverables include formal approval of the rewrite of the Membership Chapter and revisions to the Unit and District Chapters. Also, a focus on standardizing terminology and phrasing across all foundational documents, with a key priority on implementing

gender-neutral language, will occur.

Summary of additional motions and actions:

• Motion 253-GV01: Transfers independent management of the ACBL Charitable Recognition Award to the ACBL Charity Foundation, continuing the tradition of honoring Members for exceptional dedication to charitable causes.

• Motion 253-GV02: Establishes a Board Oversight Committee framework, including the Code of Conduct and ethical commitments expected of board members, and outlines the disciplinary process for infractions.

• Motion 253-GV03: Amends Codification Chapter I - Membership, A. Membership, Section 2, Definitions and Rights of ACBL Membership by defining the rights and responsibilities of non-members.

• Motion 253-GV06: Amends Codification, Chapter VII - International Bridge, B. WBF Representatives and NABF Board Members by clarifying requirements for North American Bridge Federation (NABF) Board Members and revising requirements for the NABF Representative to the World Bridge Federation (WBF) Executive Council, specifically setting a twoyear term and requiring the representative to be an active ACBL board member.

• Non-agenda Item 253-01: Formalizes the ACBL Organizational Framework, the hierarchy of governing documents that define the structure, rules, and operating procedures for the ACBL and the ACBL Board of Directors.

Bylaws

Motion 253-BY01: Advisory Council Committees (First Reading). This amendment to Article IX, Section 9.2 of the ACBL Bylaws proposes granting the Advisory Council full discretion over its committee formations, allowing committees to be established as needed rather than by mandate.

Following this First Reading, the proposal remains subject to a second board approval, ACBL Bridge Bulletin publication, and final ratification by the Advisory Council.

Audit Committee

The committee has updated the Conflict of Interest forms, distributed and collected the forms for 2025/26 from both incumbent and incoming board members, and emphasized the importance of self-reporting any potential conflicts.

Of course, we had a very good board but not a top, and I felt really bad not believing Jim had another entry, and not honoring his request. But Jim, who also knew we had won the board just smiled at me and said, “It’s just a point.” (In those days results were scored in points, not percentages.)

When the final sheets came out, we were in 2nd place out of a huge number of tables – and we lost to Bobby and Deborah Wolff by... yep, ONE POINT! We retired to the bar to go over hands and all each of could say was ...“It’s only a point!”

Masterpoint Milestone Messages

Norman Beck

Emerald Life Master Unit 176 – Dallas

Istarted playing duplicate bridge in 1978. The second time I played I was given a rating slip .05 masterpoints for placing. I didn’t know what it was and was told when I got 300 masterpoints I was a life master. I thought 5 down 295 to go and then they informed me it was 0.05.

I didn’t play well when I first started and would ask other players about the bidding. I’d get six different answers from five different people. I knew that was wrong. My solution was to find the best player, get them to play with me and in two weeks I’d have the game mastered – the longest two weeks of my life! The best player in Tulsa was Byron Greenberg but folks failed to tell me he was a bookie that ran a nightclub. Membership at the local bridge club cost

$20.00. I didn’t have the money but couldn’t afford not to pay it. So, I met Byron and told him what I needed. This was his advice:

1. Play all you can play.

2. Read all you can read.

3. Always play with better players.

4. Learn something every time you play.

I have never wavered from that advice. Thirty-four years ago, I moved to Dallas and went to work for (at the time arguably the best bridge player in the world) Bob Hamman. I also became partners in bridge and life with a woman world champion player, Joan Jackson. I was also lucky enough to get to play with, listen to and learn from some of the best players in the world.

Two years ago by a strange twist of fate I started to play bridge professionally and that has helped my game because of the teaching.

Bridge has been very good to me. It got me away from college football, it got me a job, it got me a career, it got me Joan Jackson, it got me a large number of friends, it got me hours of joy, it got me a life. You can’t ask for more.

All I can say is thank you and that is not enough.

Charlotte Brigham Regional Master Unit 207 – Austin

Less than two years ago I decided that I was bored with party bridge and convinced my friend Jeanne Cassidy to come to the Bridge Center of Austin (Center) and start playing duplicate with me. I was anxious to play and she was busy so I signed up to find a partner to play with me in the one Life Master game scheduled for Monday, January 8, 2024. Thankfully, Carol Swartz agreed to be my partner. We showed up and played and scored 49.63%, came in second in C and earned 0.45 black masterpoints. Carol remarked that the Monday game was a more difficult game and she asked me why I picked that game. I replied that it worked well with my weekly schedule. Basically, my other club was closed on Monday's.

Well, I was hooked, and Carol and I have been partners since that infamous day. When I first arrived at the Center my confidence was high and I thought I was a good player. I soon learned I really didn't know much and my basics were deficient. My strategy was to try to get Carol to play most of the hands. I will forever remember our lunch at Manuel's in summer of 2024 when Carol was almost pleading with me to learn the basics. After that luncheon, I started taking Sally' Sassen's lessons and they have proven to be invaluable.

Now I am playing at the Center at least three times a week. I have tried playing online but I do not like the inconsistency of the robots and it is just not the same experience as playing in person. I love all my partners and the whole culture of the Center. I have found some new great friends, and I love the intellectual stimulus. I really do appreciate the caliber and character of our membership. I am particularly grateful to Carol Swartz for her patience and loyalty, and to Jerry Barrett and Mickey Goldwater for serving as my mentors.

I am working very hard at getting my Life Master: Trying to obtain the correct type of masterpoints, but achieving the right number of gold and red masterpoints is daunting. It really is not fair that ACBL pushes so much for you to travel to get the points. I believe that you should be able to play in your region and still achieve the red/gold points within a reasonable time frame. Otherwise ACBL should reduce those points to a number obtainable within a certain area circumference within a reasonable time frame. I am an active real estate broker, working full time, and I cannot travel much to attend tournaments right now and it would be nice to achieve my Life Master within the next ten years. We just don't have enough opportunities to achieve those points here in the Austin area.

I love the challenge and community of bridge, there is no other game like it since with duplicate bridge you can achieve a national ranking for your achievement. Other games come and go, and are basically social, but duplicate bridge to me is by far the Premier Game.

South American Bridge Championships District 16 Members’ Accomplishments

The 2025 South American Bridge Championships were held October 16-22 in Cali, Columbia. District 16 had a tremendous showing by our members at this event.

Distsrict 16 Second

Vice President Kristen Onsgard (Unit 176, Dallas) and her partner, Gigi Simpson (Unit 102, Sarasota, Florida) won the Women's Pairs!

Additionally, Mary Ann White and Nicola Beninger (Unit 205, Lake Chapala, Mexico) placed 3rd in the same event.

The Pairs events started it off during the first two days of competition. Our very own Education and Lecture Coordinator, Patricia Herrera (Unit 173, Mexico City, and her father, Gonzalo Herrera (Unit 173, Naucalpan, Mexico) were victorious in the Mixed Pairs taking 1st place.

We applaud their performance in representing District 16 and the Mexico and Dallas units where they reside.

It was a terrific showing for the ACBL and District 16.

Unit 172 - San Antonio

Unit

172 finished off 2025 with a grand holiday bash and Unit Bridge game on December 13 at the St. Thomas Church. Thanks to Karen Fillis and her crew the event was a rousing success. There was turkey, dressing and all the fixin’s, not to mention an amazing array of homemade desserts and other delicacies. We had 21.5 total tables show up. Jim Roff and Don Marcott out stepped them all in A, B and C flights with a 65.28% game! Way to go, guys!

We look forward to our Ed Rawlinson Winter Sectional which will be held Thursday-Sunday, January 15-18 at the San Antonio Jewish Community Center (JCC). The JCC is a lovely venue surrounded by lots of convenient restaurants where you can grab a casual lunch between events. Start times are 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Our Unit 172 Awards Day game will be held Saturday, February 21 at the St. Thomas Church. Hoping to see you at the table and wishing one and all a very happy and healthy 2026!

Bridge Academy of West Houston

Bridge Academy of West Houston (BAWH) isn't just a fun duplicate bridge club but it is the place to be near any holidays because of the club's parties. Enjoy!

Halloween

On Thursday, October 30 players were asked to get in the Halloween spirit and wear appropriate costumes.

Jack

LaVigne

– King of Bridge Party

On Wednesday, November 5, the club gathered for a special celebration in honor of Jack LaVigne. For several months, Jack has enjoyed the unofficial title of the club’s “King of Bridge,” a distinction humorously bestowed by Linda Drake, B. Haznedar, and Kathy Pflueger – complete with custom pencils labeled “Jack LaVigne – King of Bridge.” The party brought everyone together to celebrate a wonderful combination of milestones: Jack’s birthday, his extraordinary volunteer service to the club, and his recent achievement of the prestigious District 16 James and Oswold Jacoby Service Award.

Bernstein, King of Bridge Jack LaVigne & Joe Quinn

Two of the more spectacular costumes were:

(Left) Marsha Bernstein (aka Lucille Ball) and B Haznedar.

Jack is one of the club’s most dedicated and reliable volunteers. Each week, he sells entries on Wednesdays and Thursdays using a field-balancing program he designed himself. He keeps our computers updated, manages the display of upcoming events, and ensures our printers stay operational. Jack also readily steps in when other volunteers are away – brewing coffee, picking up supplies, and even directing games when needed.

The celebration was filled with smiles, laughter, and appreciation. Everyone enjoyed the festivities, and Jack was genuinely touched by the warm congratulations and kind words shared in his honor.

Christmas Party

The BAWH’s Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 17 was one of the most memorable events in the history of the club. We welcomed our largest turnout ever – 40 full tables! A special thankyou goes to Linda Drake, who

Marsha

coordinated all the reservations and, in a truly gracious gesture, gave up her own seat so others could play. Her kindness set a wonderful tone for the day.

Joe Quinn and Carol Jewett provided the turkey, while B Haznedar contributed the ham and pork. Players rounded out the feast with delicious potluck dishes and an array of homemade desserts. The room was filled with holiday spirit, good cheer, and lively bridge, making it a joyful celebration for everyone who attended.

Halloween Costume Party & Game

CLBC celebrated Halloween with a Costume Party and Game. Millie Perner took 1st place as The Bride of Frankenstein. Rick Stell came in 2nd as The Werewolf.

Seminar with Robert Todd

On November 15, CLBC hosted a bridge seminar with Robert Todd. The well attended event included lunch. Unit 174 President Betty Starzec introduced Robert and also highlighted the upcoming Barbara Phillips Lone Star Regional. Here are some of the photos from the day:

Thanksgiving Party

At CLBC, there is never an excuse not to celebrate and Thanksgiving gives the club such an opportunity to both play duplicate and celebrate (yet again!). We've included some highlights of our Thankfulness below:

1st Place
The Bride of Frankenstein
2nd Place The Werewolf

Rick Stell Appreciation Day

On Monday, December 8, the club celebrated a special club member, Rick Stell, with a party, award and of course, a game. Rick unselfishly supports the club in myriad ways over the years, many times behind the scenes, especially with the maintenance of the club building. He is also both a presenter and one of the founders of bridge lessons during our Breakfast Lesson series and continues to mentor many of us. Enjoy the photos of his big day.

Sandy Mills Going Away Party

CLBC threw a going away party for our friend and club's photographer Sandi Mills. She and her husband, John, are headed to California to be closer to family. She will be missed.

U P C O M I N G . . .

CLBC member, Robert (Rob) Burridge, is teaching bridge to middle school students. He led a bridge field trip for 27 students who attended the November BCOH 499er tournament. We are hoping to get approval from the students' parents so we can feature them in the next issue. Stay tuned for more.

As you can see from our activities, CLBC is an active club and its members love to party! Happy New Year from CLBC to District 16. Come to our club and play and have some fun!

Dallas Fall Sectional Summary:

We had a total of 318 tables in play during the tournament, 64% in Swiss Teams and 36% in pairs (26% Open Pairs and 10% 499er Pairs). 304 players shared the 1,604 Masterpoints awarded. Thanks to our many volunteers who were essential to the tournament, especially Bob Holliday (Tournament Chair), Paul Taylor (Partnership Desk), Mary Lynn Genovesi & Rosalind Smith (Hospitality), Randy Eads (Photos), John Redfern & Chuck Eastin (Equipment), Gerrie Owen (Caddie Manager), and Ed Yetter (Business Manager). You can see tournament results here Special Recognitions

Congratulations to Kristen Onsgard and Petra Hamman who won the Whitehead Women’s Pairs at the recent NABC in San Francisco. This was a 4-session event that earned 88 masterpoints.

Kristen also won two Gold Medals during the World Bridge Federation's South American Bridge Championships held in Cali, Columbia. She finished first both in the Woman's Pairs and in the Woman's Teams. Way to go, Kristen!

Congratulations to Barry Schaffer for reaching the level of Platinum Life Master with over 15,000 masterpoints.

Unit 183 - Fort Western

Unit

183 is off to a strong cooperative start in January, with multiple clubs working together to manage upcoming tournaments. A Fort Western Regional is in the works for May 11-17, and unit clubs will host another five Sectionals before year’s end. Details and flyers are forthcoming.

David Branch will again lead the unit as board of directors in 2026 as president, with Cynthia Benton serving as vice-president, Diane Dillman as secretary and Steve Shirey as Treasurer. John Burgess has joined the board for 2026, replacing John Robbins, whose term has expired.

The unit voted the 2025 Texas Star Award to Ken and Constance Javour of Denton for their outstanding work on past and upcoming tournaments. The Goodwill Awards for their cheerful presence at games will go to Larz Smith in Arlington and Susan Shaw in Fort Worth.

Perhaps players need to be careful what we ask for. In an anonymous post on a duplicate bridge blog, a gentleman says he was traveling to another town on business and decided to call the local club to see if he could find an evening game.

He dialed the club number and asked if they could procure a partner for him that night. The adamant rejoinder was a loud WE DO NOT PROVIDE THAT SERVICE HERE! and a hangup. Taken aback, he says he dropped by the club the next day and found the location was a community center where the phone had been answered by the leader of a ladies’ exercise group.

Unit 201 - Sabine Neches

Top Score at the October Sectional

Theoverall Unit 201 club member with the top score in October Sabine Neches Sectional Tournament was Marilyn Adams. She was playing with Jimmy Breihan in the Saturday afternoon pairs. They scored 69.94%. Marilyn’s name will be added to the trophy in honor of Nancy Smalley, Master Teacher.

Party, Party, Party!

The Halloween spirit was shown by some members.

Loretta Gary celebrated her 98th birthday playing bridge on December 10.

Four days later young players showed the same enthusiasm for the game as Loretta. The December 14 game included Alyssa, Avery, and Asher Puente, grandkids of Wayne Outlaw.

A Christmas Party with traditional eggnog was held on December 17 before the game. Members are also looking forward to the Bling Party this January, honoring Silver, Ruby, and Sapphire Life Masters.

Check out the D16 70%+ Club to see all our members who scored 70%+ games since our last report.

Unit 204 - Fort Concho

Beforejumping into 2026, let’s take a moment to reflect on a few endof-year highlights from 2025.

Milestones!

Congratulations to Nancy Greer for reaching Ruby Life Master(>1,500MPs) and Jerre McAfee for reaching Silver Life Master (>1,000MPs). And there is more! Congratulations to Linda Reichenau on achieving Silver Life Master status! Barry Jackson has been our club diplomat, traveling to Lubbock in October to play with John Lyndall. They placed 3rd overall with a 57% game in a five-table 299er event.

While there, Barry learned that the Lubbock club will be starting a Saturday game in 2026.

In October, Barry also traveled to Flor de Cana, Colombia, for The South American Bridge Championships. He and his partner, Sebastian Valenzuela, had a fantastic experience! And he will be going back again next year.

While we’re on the topic of international adventures, Marifrances Watson and Linda Reichenau attended the Whistler 2025 Regional Bridge Tournament in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. They returned not only with wonderful memories of scenic Canada, but also with Gold Points – 13.71 for Linda and 11.01 for Marifrances. Well done ladies! We appreciate our club ambassadors!

Director Shadowing in San Antonio

In October, Marifrances Watson was “director shadowing” at the San Antonio Tournament to brush up on her skills. She ran into friends and former Fort Concho members Lou Morton Jana Barnard.

It’s always a joy to reconnect – especially across the bridge table wherever it may be found. Marifrances will be directing our San Angelo Tournament March 13-15. Make sure to check out our flyer in this issue for more tournament details.

Shout Out to Suzanne Dorris

A big thank you goes to Club Manager

Suzanne Dorris for everything she does, especially coordinating the servicing of our dealing machine, with little interruption for the directors.

Lots of New Things

There is plenty of newness happening around Unit 204.

Thanks to a generous anonymous donation, the club purchased a new computer, printer, mouse, and even a new desk. The old computer will still serve a purpose –running the game clock.

We also have new signage for the club building!

Additionally, donations from club members helped fully fund much-needed upgrades to both restrooms, including fresh paint, new flooring, new toilets, and a safety grab bar. Thank you, members, for supporting these improvements.

Thank you Peyton

We would also like to thank Peyton Jackson (daughter of Barry Jackson) for assisting with the design of our tournament announcement flyer for March 13-15 and you can see it (just to repeat in case you missed my last reference) in this issue.

Yard Crew

The Club Yard Crew (Carol Diminnie, Neal Perlman and Troy Harvey) have been busy clearing flowerbeds, trimming hedges, painting curbs to better mark the back-lot entry, and trimming trees for improved accessibility. There are always projects on the list; contact Carol if you would like to help.

Special thanks to Carl McGill, who brought out his chainsaw to tackle a bigger job and hauled all debris to his ranch with help from Barry Jackson.

Rising Star

We also want to recognize a rising star: Riki Rich. Some say there is hardly a moment the club is open when she isn’t playing (which is an incredibly good thing!). You will find her in the winner's stratification often. She is the perfect example of someone with the bridge bug, and her enthusiasm is contagious. Her growth in the game is noticeable and appreciated. She is also Co-Chair of New Membership, and we are confident her energy will inspire fresh players. Many top games to you, Riki!

Halloween Shots/Gifts

Julie Moorman, Director of the Shamrock Open games on Wednesdays and Thursdays, always brings fun and fellowship to the club. Here are a few snapshots from Halloween and mascot's ,Daisy, 3rd Birthday celebration:

Julie also spices things up by having two randomly selected players roll dice – one die for N/S or E/W and the other for table number. If the roll results in, for example, Table 2 N/S, that pair wins a prize. Last time, prizes included a free play, Ice Balls, or a Mystery Gift.

In recent weeks, Bonnie Beasley and Marty Simpson have been on a winning streak. Not quite a 70% game yet but they deserve honorable mention.

NAP Qualifiers

More than 60 members from Unit 204 have qualified for NAP, scheduled for January 10 & 11 at the Bridge Center in Austin. Congratulations to all, and best of luck to those who plan to participate.

Christmas Luncheon

Linda Reichenau once again hosted her annual Christmas luncheon and sanctioned game at her Blue Bluff Ranch! She had 5.5 tables, wonderful Mexican theme food, delicious deserts, and lots of fun. Marifrances Watson directed this sanctioned Club Championship game and the winners…drum roll….hostess Linda Reichenau and sidekick John Osborne! We appreciate you Linda and husband, Charlie, for graciously opening your ranch to the San Angelo and Mason Bridge members. Hospitality at its finest!

Christmas Party

Our club had a very festive Christmas party with 9 tables! Of course, there was food and we appreciate all those that provided dishes and played to make it a success. Club Director Marifrances Watson and Club Treasurer/Board Member were recognized with a Christmas bonus. That is close to a full house. Here are few pictures of the year end event.

Capital Campaign

We are in the middle of a Capital Campaign to upgrade our HVAC system. We have a goal of $40,000+ and have so far raised almost $30,000.

Upcoming Tall City Sectional

Save the dates! Midland will be hosting our annual Tall City Sectional on June 5-7, with both 199er flights and 200+ flights on Friday and Saturday, and Swiss Pairs on Sunday. This year the tournament will be held at the Manor Park Clubhouse, which is larger than our club. Mark Beckstrom will be the tournament chair.

Halloween Party

Our Halloween costume party was held on October 30. Breakfast – including fresh pancakes, breakfast casseroles, sausage and bacon, and biscuits – was served at 6:30 a.m. The feast was followed by eight tables of bridge. N/S winners were Ann Parish and Mark Beckstrom. E/W winners were Phil Middleton and Nancy Ward.

The bridge house was beautifully decorated by Paula Bayley, and the players came in festive outfits. We had ten tables, and winners were N/S Mark Beckstrom and Sarah Wright, and

E/W Sandy Hill and Jimmie Jenson.

We hope everyone had a great holiday, and we are looking forward to a Happy New Year of bridge in 2026.

Unit 225 - East Texas

Celebration of Life for S V (Rathnam) Ramarathna

Rathnam’s wife, Geetha, catered lunch for the November 2025 Unit Game as a Celebration of Life for Rathnam. She and their son, Vivek, both attended along with 12 tables of players. Pud Patterson said it perfectly. “Rathnam was a consummate card player – skilled and

creative! Rathnam was a player’s player - comfortable with experts and generous and compassionate with beginners. Always a ferocious competitor but he always said “just have fun” and he did!" On a personal level, he was our friend and we shall miss him terribly! Unit 225 Celebrates the Season with Catered Christmas Luncheon

On Saturday, December 15 the unit kicked off the holiday season with a Mark Leighton catered Christmas luncheon before our Unit Championship game. Members gathered to enjoy good food by Mark, great company, and the opportunity to recognize the many individuals who make our unit so special.

A highlight of the luncheon was the recognition of our Emeritus Members – Mary Bartley, Linda Harrison, Gay Roach, and Mike Graham – who were honored for their distinguished service and lasting contributions to Unit 225. Their dedication has helped shape our unit, and it was a pleasure to celebrate them.

We also took time to recognize the Unit 225 Board, with special appreciation expressed by the president for the countless hours and hard work the board has devoted to developing processes for the smooth operation of the unit, supporting the directors of our six clubs, and working on plans to add members. Board members were introduced individually, giving everyone a chance to put faces with names and better understand the leadership behind the scenes.

Standing left to right are Brenda Williams, Michelle Shores, Frank Morton, Jo Britt, Linda Gurasich, Elaine Dorsey, and Robert Fiorendino. Absent are Sanjay Santhanam and Deb Pascoe.
S V Ramarathna

In addition, we proudly honored our members’ achievements by recognizing year to date 2025 Life Masters, Bronze Masters, Silver Masters, Ruby Masters, and Sapphire Master. These accomplishments reflect not only skill and commitment, but also the enthusiasm that makes our unit thrive.

The luncheon was a wonderful blend of celebration, gratitude, and holiday cheer and a perfect way to close out the year together. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success and congratulations to all those recognized!

Pittsburg DBC

Fall is a Time for Parties and Celebrations

On Friday November 7, Pittsburg DBC celebrated Linda Harrison’s 80th birthday with a pot luck lunch before the game. Frank and Linda then hosted a continued celebration at their house, where Frank put his new outdoor kitchen and covered deck to good use.

Pittsburg DBC had its annual Christmas party on Friday, December 5 with 5.5 tables! It was a festive time with lots of food and special time visiting with friends!

Sheila Bell DBC

Sheila Bell DBC added 3 new Life Masters. Julia Mobley, Dena Hill and Fredye Alford.

Longview DBC

The Longview DBC held their Christmas Party on Dec 11 at the bridge club. Members brought an abundance of food, and Mike Graham was presented with a gift by Janie Wolaver on behalf of the club members. This was followed by an afternoon of bridge with 5 tables.

Unit 353 - Wichita Falls

A Christmas Tale Unit 353’s favorite game is the Christmas Party at Lois Rorerson’s house. Every little nook and cranny had a Christmas decoration and the pot luck lunch is always wonderful. Below Lois is waiting for her guests to arrive.

A new attraction this year was Mama’s Elves. Louanne and Janice are Lois’ daughters and they come every year to decorate the house for Christmas. This year they made Mama’s Elf aprons and came to the party to help serve and clean up. We are all very fond of Mama’s Elves.

a director. We appreciate all that she has done in the past six months.

Lunch was served on the beautiful table pictured below. We had Bloody Mary’s, casseroles, salads, vegetables, fresh breads, cakes, pies and candies. YUM!

And then it was time to play bridge. Dave Hertzog, a long-time club owner and director, had a brain bleed six months ago. We were all so glad to have him back with us at the Bridge Table.

Carolyn Hird and her husband are visiting their children in Wichita Falls for a few months. We are so glad to have her play with us and will miss her when she leaves to return home.

Cathy Zinn was the director for this game. She had to bring the computer, printer, bridge mates and table cards. Lois had the cards and bidding boxes. Cathy has worked hard to become the owner of “Cathy BC” and

Unit 353 hopes all our District 16 friends had a MERRY CHRISTMAS and are having a HAPPY NEW YEAR

Sandra (Sandy) Peterson Potts 1954 | 2025

Sandra (Sandy) Peterson Potts was born on January 18, 1954, in Fort Worth. She passed away in Austin on November 30, 2025. She attended Sharpstown High School in Houston and University of Texas (UT) in Austin, achieving a double master's degree from UT.

It is with both sorrow and gratitude that we remember a remarkable teacher and devoted bridge player, whose life was defined by curiosity, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the power of connection. Both in the classroom and around the card table Sandy was a teacher in the truest sense. She taught at McCallum High School and Austin Community College. She approached education not as a profession, but as a calling. With patience she helped countless students discover their abilities, their confidence, and their voice.

Outside the classroom, Sandy found equal joy and challenge in the world of duplicate bridge. To her, it was never merely a game. It was a beautiful exercise in logic, partnership, and trust. Sandy earned over 3500 masterpoints, was awarded two Unit Goodwill and a Star award from District 16, as well as two teaching certificates. Sandy cherished the friendships built over countless games of bidding, triumphs, and near misses.

Though she has left the classroom and the card table for the last time the lessons she imparted and the connections she nurtured endure, carried forward by the many whose lives she touched. Sandy will always be deeply missed and dearly remembered.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, D. Charles and Ruth Menut, and her brother Daniel Menut.

She is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, William R. "Bill" Potts, her sister Deborah Breed (Rollin), her son Keith Peterson (Crystal), and two grandchildren Addison and Austin Peterson, her son Eric Peterson and grandson Jacob Peterson, stepdaughters Kathy DuPriest (Travis) and Karen Crites (Jeff), and brother-in-law Charlie Potts (Eileen).

A memorial service will be announced later.

Mary Jane Armstrong 1942 | 2025

Mary Jane Armstrong (Jane) one of Houston's most treasured members, passed away December 14 after a year-long battle against leukemia. An outstanding player and long-standing Unit 174 member, Jane exuded warmth while displaying her natural wit and amazing style.

She was an invaluable volunteer serving as Hospitality Chair for the Lone Star Regional for many years, Nominating Committee Chair and behind the scenes support for her late husband, Bob, while he was unit president. Jane was named to the national ACBL Goodwill Committee and was a Diamond Life Master.

Virginia McKimmon Noelke 1941 | 2025

Amoment of heartfelt recognition goes out to Virginia (Ginny) McKimmon Noelke. Ginny was a good thinker as a measured participant in her service on Unit 204 Board as President. She was respected as a partner, teammate and opponent. She accumulated an impressive 8960 masterpoints, the highest all time in Unit 204! The club has recognized her on our club Truby Bunch plaque for outstanding contributions. Rest in peace. You can read more about Ginny here.
