STAYING VIGILANT: UNDERSTANDING MEASLES AND THE IMPORTANCE OF VACCINATION By Houston Health Department News Provider nce considered nearly eliminated in the United States, measles is making a troubling resurgence in several parts of the country, reminding communities that prevention through vaccination remains as important as ever. Characterized by its high fever, cough, runny nose, and a signature red rash, measles spreads rapidly through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Even brief exposure can lead to infection, particularly among those who are unvaccinated or have weakened immune systems.
O
While modern medicine offers strong protection through the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine, recent outbreaks show that awareness and community action are vital to keeping measles at bay. In Houston, health officials are taking swift measures to address potential exposure linked to a travel-related case identified in neighboring Fort Bend County. The Houston Health Department (HHD) is actively identifying and reaching out to Houston residents who may have been exposed in connection with Fort Bend County’s first confirmed case. Health officials emphasize that this case remains travel-related and is not linked to the ongoing outbreak in West Texas.
“ Our team is working diligently to notify and provide guidance to those who may have been in contact with the individual,” said Dr. David Persse, City of Houston’s Chief Medical Officer. “Measles is highly contagious, but it is also preventable with vaccination.” The MMR vaccine offers 97% protection against measles with the recommended two doses. “Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your family, and our community,” added Dr. Persse. “We strongly encourage anyone who is not fully vaccinated to get their MMR shots as soon as possible.” Because measles can lead to serious complications, particularly for young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems, HHD urges residents to verify their vaccination records and stay alert for symptoms such as fever, cough, red eyes, and rash. Those who may have been exposed should contact their healthcare provider before visiting a clinic to avoid spreading the infection to others. Measles is more than a childhood illness. It’s a public health test that challenges communities to be proactive, not reactive. Vaccination continues to be our strongest defense, protecting not only individuals but the collective well-being of our city.

5 SUGAR INTAKE TIPS TO
PREVENT CAVITIES IN 2026
ing and flossing, it’s important to keep up with your dental care routine no matter what your diet looks like. That means brushing your teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between your teeth once a day. Choose dental products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance and see your dentist regularly for valuable checkups. Appointments can fill up fast after the holidays, so schedule them far in advance to avoid delays. Timing matters. Instead of eating sweets on their own, pair them with meals or eat them shortly after mealtimes. During a meal, your mouth releases more saliva, which is another tool in the fight against tooth decay, canceling out acids and washing away food from teeth and gums. Saliva also contains minerals to repair weakened teeth. For snacks between meals, choose a healthy option like fruit, vegetables or cheese. “If you find yourself enjoying a sweet treat apart from a meal, chewing sugar-free gum with the ADA Seal of Acceptance after can increase saliva and may help counter acidity,” said Dr. Price.
By StatePoint News Provider oliday celebrations often feature lots of great food and drinks, including sweet treats to indulge in. But too much sugar in your diet can weaken your teeth, leaving your smile vulnerable to cavities. After a sweet holiday season, follow these five sugar intake tips so you can prevent cavities and improve your oral and overall health in 2026.
H
Restore the balance. If your holiday season was filled with candy canes, hot cocoa and cookies, now is the time to revive a balanced diet with a variety of healthy foods from each of the five major food groups. Fill your plate with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and low-fat dairy foods.
Sugary beverages like soda and juice should be served sparingly, as healthier options like water and plain milk have far more nutritional value. “Water is the best beverage for your teeth,” said American Dental Association (ADA) dentist, Mirissa Price, D.M.D. “Not only does water help wash away cavity-causing bacteria and weaken the acids in your mouth, but water with optimal levels of fluoride strengthens your teeth against cavities. Be picky if it’s sticky and watch out for starch. You might think dried fruit is a healthy choice, but raisins and dried cranberries often stick to your teeth, giving the bacteria in your mouth more time to feast on the natural sugars. Meanwhile, starchy foods like chips and cakes often get trapped between your teeth where cavities also form. “If you choose these foods, pair them with water, and make sure to brush and floss thoroughly,” said Dr. Price. Resolve to maintain your dental routine. Speaking of brush-
Set a good example. It’s no surprise that most kids also want to enjoy a sweet treat now and then, but remember that cavities are the most common chronic childhood disease. Provide children with foods and drinks that are healthy and low in sugar, remind them about regular at-home dental care, and set a good example by modeling all the tips above. For help keeping your child’s dental routine on track, visit MouthHealthy. org/calendar to download a free 12-month brushing and flossing calendar.
“Making choices to keep your mouth healthy doesn’t stop you from enjoying good food,” said Dr. Price. “Finding a balance is key, and the start of a new year is a great time to focus on healthy behaviors to benefit your dental and overall health.” Source: StatePoint

By StatePoint News Provider s a new year begins, many Americans are looking for realistic ways to improve their health—not through extreme resolutions, but through practical, sustainable habits. To help guide those efforts, the American Medical Association (AMA) has released 10 evidence-based tips to support physical, mental, and emotional well-being in 2026 and beyond.
A
“Even tiny changes now can snowball into major gains for your long-term health,” said AMA President Dr. Bobby Mukkamala. With that in mind, here’s a closer look at the AMA’s recommendations, along with real-life examples of how to put them into action.
1. GET HEALTH SCREENINGS
Preventive care is one of the most effective tools for long-term health. Annual checkups, lab screenings, and routine tests allow physicians to identify potential issues early—before they become serious or costly. For example, regular blood work can flag high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, or obesity-related risks well in advance. Many people discover vitamin deficiencies, thyroid issues, or blood pressure concerns during routine visits, giving them time to adjust diet, exercise, or medication. Staying on top of screenings like mammograms, colonoscopies, and heart health assessments can literally be lifesaving.
2. MANAGE STRESS
Mental health is inseparable from physical health, and chronic stress takes a real toll on the body. Learning optimism—re-framing challenges and focusing on what can be controlled—can improve both mood and resilience. For those with demanding jobs, balance is key. If the workday is packed with meetings and deadlines, adding intentional downtime afterward, such as reading, journaling, or walking outdoors, can help decompress. On slower workdays, pairing activity after work—like yoga, stretching, or light strength training—can boost mood and energy. Practices such as meditation, deep breathing, and therapy also provide valuable tools for managing stress more effectively.

3. BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE
The AMA recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week. Fortunately, exercise doesn’t have to mean a gym membership. Pickleball and tennis improve coordination and cardiovascular health, while swimming is gentle on joints and strengthens the entire body. Biking enhances endurance and leg strength, and Pilates builds core stability and posture. Tai Chi, often described as “meditation in motion,” improves balance, flexibility, and mental focus—especially helpful for older adults. Even short movement breaks during a sedentary workday can reduce stiffness and improve circulation.
4. FOLLOW A HEALTHY DIET
A balanced diet supports nearly every system in the body. Prioritize whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy. Replacing sugar-sweetened beverages with water can significantly reduce excess calorie intake. Research published in JAMA Network Open shows that drinking sugary beverages—even 100% fruit juice—is linked to higher mortality risk. Preparing meals at home, reading nutrition labels, and limiting ultra-processed foods high in sodium, saturated fats, and added sugars can improve heart health and energy levels.
5. STAY HYDRATED
Hydration is often overlooked, yet even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and poor concentration. Water should be the primary source of hydration, but milk and herbal teas also contribute. According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, adult men should consume about 15.5 cups of fluids per day, while women should aim for 11.5 cups. Carrying a reusable water bottle or setting reminders can make hydration a simple daily habit.
7. UPDATE VACCINATIONS
6. GET PLENTY OF GOOD SLEEP
8. DRINK IN MODERATION—OR CONSIDER QUITTING
Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep for optimal health. Sleep supports immunity, brain function, and emotional regulation. Turning off digital devices at least an hour before bedtime helps reduce blue light exposure that interferes with melatonin production. Going to sleep earlier—even by 30 minutes—can make a noticeable difference. Reducing exposure to stimulating content, such as political news, online influencers, or true crime shows, may also calm the mind before bed. Establishing a relaxing routine—reading, light stretching, or calming music—signals the body that it’s time to rest.
Vaccinations remain one of the most effective defenses against serious illness. Flu season can last well into spring, making it worthwhile to get vaccinated even later in the season. The AMA encourages people to speak directly with their physicians to determine which vaccines are appropriate. For reliable, evidence-based information, the AMA website offers clear guidance, while GetMyFluShot.org helps locate nearby vaccination sites.
The U.S. Dietary Guidelines define moderation as up to one drink per day for women and two for men. However, some individuals choose to stop drinking altogether—and many report noticeable benefits within just one month of sobriety. Improved sleep, clearer skin, better focus, weight loss, lower blood pressure, and enhanced mood are common changes. For those considering quitting, support resources include primary care providers, counseling services, Alcoholics Anonymous, and digital tools like moderation or sobriety apps. Even reducing alcohol intake can significantly improve overall health.
9. QUIT TOBACCO, NICOTINE, AND E-CIGARETTES
Smoking and vaping remain leading causes of preventable disease. Quitting lowers the risk of heart disease, cancer, and respiratory illness. Health care professionals can provide cessation programs, medications, and counseling to help manage withdrawal and cravings. Creating smoke-free environments at home and in cars also protects loved ones from secondhand smoke.
10. FOLLOW MEDICATION DIRECTIONS
Medications are most effective when used correctly. Store prescriptions safely, dispose of unused medications properly, and always follow dosing instructions. Completing prescribed antibiotic courses helps prevent antibiotic resistance. When in doubt, pharmacists and physicians are valuable resources for answering medication-related questions. With the indulgences of the holidays behind us, the start of 2026 offers a fresh opportunity to prioritize health in meaningful ways. Small, intentional choices—made consistently—can build a healthier future.

By StatePoint News Provider
t might surprise you to know that Kentucky is within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the nation’s population. The six interstate highways and dozens of superbly maintained state routes make access to the Bluegrass State all the easier and entirely perfect for a weekend adventure.
I
Here are just a few of the places that shouldn’t be overlooked when planning a Kentucky “micro trip.” When traveling through southern Kentucky on Interstate 75, be sure to set aside some time to explore Somerset, located about 40 minutes west of the interstate on the banks of Lake Cumberland. Somerset is the perfect place for almost any water activity, and due to its massive fleet of houseboats, proudly boasts the title, “Houseboat Capital of the World.” House boating is just one of the many fun and exciting hobbies to take part in on Lake Cumberland. Whether it is fishing, kayaking, tubing or just floating, there is something for everyone. In addition to the lake, Somerset has no shortage of things to do. The golf course in nearby General Burnside Island State Park is a fun and challenging Trevino-Bennett-designed course. It features several holes overlooking the lake and is mere steps away from the luxurious Woodson Bend Resort condos. For music fans looking for the Bluegrass State’s hidden gems, venture out to Central City in southwest Kentucky. There, at the Muhlenberg Music & History Museum, you will
While neither Prine nor the Everlys were permanent residents of Central City, they all had deep family connections to the area and visited often throughout their lives. In fact, one of Prine’s biggest hits, “Paradise,” warmly describes Muhlenberg County and its idyllic scenery and vibrant culture. After touring the museum, head up the street to see the life-sized bronze statues of the three musicians located in Festival Park. In northern Kentucky, just an hour’s drive from Newport, is Augusta, a delightful riverside town. Augusta offers a genuinely charming and picturesque escape on the water. This historic small town is perfect for a relaxing getaway where you can stroll along Riverside Drive, browse the shops, and visit the house once owned and occupied by legendary singer Rosemary Clooney. Today it is a museum that features memorabilia from her life and career, including costumes from the movie “White Christmas,” and a room dedicated to her nephew, actor George Clooney. No visit is complete without a stop at the Augusta Distillery or the historic Baker-Bird Winery & Distillery, where one can delve into the area’s rich distilling heritage and enjoy a tasting experience. The town’s slower pace and beautiful waterfront make it a true Kentucky treasure. These are just a few of the dozens of communities within Kentucky that are simply brimming with fun and memorable experiences for the entire family.

BE ALERT TO SCAMMERS WHILE TRAVELING
•A pply Scrutiny. Be suspicious of anyone emailing, calling, messaging or approaching you in person, possibly in a company uniform, claiming to need your personal information. •T ake Control. Keep your personal information, payment cards and devices with you under your control. •V erify Contact. Before responding to an email, call, text or voice message, disconnect and research contact information to verify legitimacy. • Look for Tampering. Be leery of QR codes that appear to be affixed by a sticker. Also watch for skimming devices on gas pumps by jiggling them. If there is any movement, don’t insert your card. •C heck Websites. If you scan a QR code, a web link will appear. Review it carefully for anomalies and type in a legitimate website address rather than clicking the link.

HERE ARE SCAMS TO WATCH FOR WHILE TRAVELING:
News Provider ravelers are a key target for scammers, and criminals are looking to cash in on you being distracted. Visa has observed an uptick in 2025 of sophisticated, travel-related scams where well-known travel providers are convincingly impersonated, and, according to a McAfee Travel Report, one in five Americans has fallen victim to a travel scam.
T
Artificial intelligence has made it easier to be duped by fake websites, calls, email and texts. Even just ordering car service can open you up to being scammed by impersonators that may contact you directly through an otherwise trusted app.
Fake QR Codes. Scammers will replace real QR codes with fake ones to redirect your phone to a malicious website. Juice Jacking. If you plug a phone or laptop into a public charging station, hackers can potentially compromise the outlet to transfer malware to or steal data from a connected device. Hacked Luggage. Smart luggage with built-in USB chargers, GPS tracking and digital locks can be hacked. Scammers can locate your bags and unlock them remotely. Maintaining vigilance is the best way to avoid trouble while traveling, but here are some additional preventative measures you can take:
•C harge Cautiously. Use your own charging adapter and cable instead of public USB ports. •S ecure Devices. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned off on all devices – even smart luggage – when not in use. When using the internet, opt to connect through data roaming rather than public Wi-Fi and use a VPN whenever possible. •W ait to Post. Don’t post your travel photos showing you are away from home until you return. By taking the necessary precautions, you can help protect yourself and make your trip a time of good relaxation rather than crisis.
