Featuring rhodium-plated bridges and mainplate and gold coloured gear trains, this movement is enriched with a minute repeater mechanism that is activated by a slide at 9 o'clock. Once the slide is activated, the time is told by the sound of the hammers chiming in different tones. The hours are chimed on a low tone, the quarter-hours by alternating low and high tones, and the minutes by the high tone.

love the autumn. A blank page, fresh ideas, new projects – it’s the Madonna in me. While my girlfriends whoosh down the slopes of Courchevel, I head off to the Emirates, drawn by the irresistible force of a new world. The magnetism of the Orient, this feeling that you are witnessing the birth of new Babels, of new pyramids. “Desert Forever”, wrote Jean Baudrillard to conjure up the dream-reality that is California. Back in Paris, I breathe in all the possibilities of the season: new novels, new beauty creams to make us even more attractive and above all … new collections! The new sensation, the new darling of recent seasons is undoubtedly Alexandre Vauthier. We take a look into a very bright future! Far from the predictable routine, when poetry returns to a spot, she restores its magic. Through the tragedy of The Rose, Murakami has sought to retranscribe his own vision of Versailles. Between splendour and minimalism one almost expects to come across a psychedelic Marie-Antoinette! Just like the Queen of Hearts, we all suffer from shopping fever. A case of the blues? A post break-up depression? A quick trip down to Avenue Montaigne and everything is rosy again! So much more effective as an instant moral boost than a session with Dr Sborowsky! And as the devilish Kim Cattrall (alias Samantha Jones in Sex & The City and a guest in this issue) puts it: “It’s been said before but buying an Haute Couture dress is like setting your heart on a diamond. You are sure of making a good investment!” Between Avenue Montaigne and a shrink, my mind is made up!

A «kittenish» spirit in Rue Saint Honoré Camomilla Milano, the leading Italian accessories line, has crossed a border and hit the French capital with a 600m² concept store in Paris’s Rue Saint Honoré. The shop is dedicated to glamour, fun and fantasy with an avalanche of brightly-coloured polka dots and fashionable big bows. Pride of place goes to the new range of Hello Kitty luggage with its retro-chic styling – so cute!
Milla, Escada’s muse The plush surroundings of an old Parisian theatre, a ready-to-wear collection inspired by the famous 1930s artist Tamara de Lempicka and the feline charm of Milla Jovovich... This was the exceptional setting Escada chose for its latest Peter Lindbergh photo shoot. The radiant Milla Jovovich showed off an incredibly glamorous collection with elegance and sensuality.

The rumour machine surrounding Olivier Theyskens was working full steam when the news finally broke: he had been appointed artistic director at the minimalist label, Theory. After having put his unique talent at the disposal of the prestigious houses of Rochas and Nina Ricci, the Belgian designer was snapped up by Theory’s founder, Andrew Rosen. And he proved his worth instantly with his first collection “Theyskens’ Theory” on the catwalks of New York Fashion Week. The future looks bright for Leighton Meester and Madonna’s darling, whose poetic style evokes feminine frailty with grace. A faultless record so far – so what’s next? © Getty Images
17.1% That is the percentage of Hermès shares currently held by the biggest name in international luxury brands, Bernard Arnault. Less than two weeks after his dramatic entry into Hermès capital, the board of the company behind the famous «Kelly» bag and a thousand scarves called on the boss of LVMH to withdraw, an option ruled out by analysts meaning a cold war could break out in the world of luxury.
Inlikely bed-fellows It hardly seems the most natural partnership: yet the enfant terrible of English soul Amy Winehouse and the oh-so-British Fred Perry label have just launched their first collection. After having made the front pages of tabloid papers for too many of the wrong reasons, Winehouse picked up a pair of scissors and gave the iconic brand a feminine, retro make-over. The result: a collection which flirts with the Old School trend with its pencil skirts, gingham and peddle-pushers, all in baby-pink, grey and black. Remind you of anything? The scandalous Kate Moss and the very bourgeois Longchamp! And that ended in a phenomenal success! But will it be game, set and match for Amy?!
Bag ladies What do Eva Longoria, Halle Berry and Charlize Theron have in common? No, not an ex boyfriend, although...! The answer is «Coach» – the bags that are a beautiful blend of classic spirit, modernity, impeccable high-quality leather and a reasonable price. A true American success story, this label, born in a family loft in Manhattan in 1941, has now become a must-have the other side of the Atlantic and was floated on the stock market in 2000. This year Coach hit France. The latest bags of the stars and other leather goods, jewellery, perfumes and clothing are available exclusively through Printemps. 30

Fabergé - 1,545 natural pink diamonds for the Ruban de la Rose Ring!
This seductive pink diamond Ruban de la Rose Ring, part of Les Fauves de Fabergé, looped with the silky soft ribbons of ballet pumps evokes the Ballets Russes’ Spectre de la Rose, in which Nijinsky, as the spirit of the rose, performs his breathtaking leap through the window, out of the young girl’s dream. A symphony in shades of dusky pink, the colour of antique roses, the luscious ribbons of the ring, paved in powder-pink diamonds, are tied around a limpid Golconda-type diamond of 11.57 carats. Golconda refers to the ancient, legendary Indian diamond mines in the fort town of Golconda, in the state of Hyderabad, India, famed for its diamonds filled with a unique soft, gentle light, likened to the moon. Golconda diamonds were lusted after by the Moghul Emperors and adored by the King of France Louis XIV. Some of the world’s greatest, most historic diamonds, like the Koh I Noor and the Hope came from Golconda. This exceptional diamond, a fancy orangey pink colour, shows Golconda-type characteristics of softness and lustre. www.faberge.com
Happy Birthday Bulgari ! 125 years of the Italian style in jewelry. Exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris.
“I always visit Bulgari, because it is the most important museum of contemporary art.” said Andy Warhol.Entitled “125 years of Italian Magnificence,” the exhibition will retrace the main chapters in Bulgari’s history and the evolution of the esthetic that made the brand a driving force of the “Italian school,” from the opening of the first shop on Via Sistina in 1884 through the modern day. This fascinating saga will be illustrated by more than 600 masterpieces of jewelry, watch- and clockmaking, and the decorative arts, including some one hundred exclusive pieces that will be on public display for the first time.Visitors will be able to admire three pieces owned by the Grimaldi family, including a necklace that belonged to Princess Grace. Christophe Claret the watchmaker. Virtuoso complications Jaquet Droz au 8, Rue de La Paix.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Christophe Claret Manufacture, the watchmaker, who creates and produces grand complication movements for the most famous names of the Swiss watch industry, launched a timepiece in 2009 that marked a watershed in company history. Christened DualTow, the single-pusher planetary-gear chronograph and tourbillon model, embodies a concentrated blend of technical excellence and aesthetic research. The major innovation of this watch issued in a limited series of 68 watches, all unique and customisable, lies first and foremost in its patented single-pusher chronograph function operating by means of three planetary-gears. Its unusual belt-type display of the hours and minutes also lends it a high-tech and sophisticated face that matches the innovative and provocative style of the CC20A movement, whose gong strikes each time the chronograph pusher is activated. The new version, NightEagle, finds its inspiration in the ultrasecret world of stealth aircraft such as the American F-117 Night Hawk, reflected in the taut lines, sharp angles, tone-on-tone colours and transparency effects. This watch highlights the birth of the Christophe Claret brand.

Antique Garland!
B o R n
For 50 years Garland has offered extraordinary antique and new jewellery. They swear by a warm welcome, politeness and customer satisfaction for a change! Experts in antique jewellery, Bernard and Minouche Messager offer rare and precious collections such as “devil” pendants from the XIXth century in yellow gold with turquoises or Art Deco armlets in jet. Always demanding the highest quality, they select modern jewellery for the excellence of the workmanship and the beauty of the stones which range from four to 130 carats. Minouche Messager is crazy for pearls and large rings and gets inspiration from her travels, creating sapphire and diamond rings reminiscent of the domes of Mughal architecture or a romantic Victoria Line in pearls and coloured stones, a modern twist on the flower basket design of the XVIIIth century... We love it!

BELLE D’OPIUM
Belle d’Opium was inspired by the creative vision of Stefano Pilati, Artistic Director at Yves Saint Laurent. Powerful, unsettling, ingenuous, dangerous and a new source of addiction, Belle d’Opium breaths an irresistible seduction, perfectly incarnated by the actress Mélanie Thierry. Spicy white flowers, narcotic Casablanca lily, white pepper, sombre patchouli, stimulating gardenia, precious sandalwood and pure mandarin orange are a reminder of intoxicating mists with a note of hookah, a heady, smoky alliance of fruit and amber around glowing embers, or velvety peach and vibrant incense. Untameable, Belle d’Opium stands out through its audacious uniqueness. We love it!

WANTED
This energetic draped bottle, delicately hand sculpted, with a golden tie wrapped around its neck was born from the pen of Hervé Van der Straeten. Wanted is also a tie between two great master perfumers, each working on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Dominique Ropion in France and Carlos Benaim in the United States created this original fragrance together, inventing olfactory harmonies never seen before: the sunshine of Ylang, the wood magnolia duality and the voluptuousness of Iris. Exquisite. Heady notes for a perfume with a strong character, reflecting the complex, rich and sensual relationship that links a woman to her lover. A game of masculine/ feminine doubles where light notes embrace voluptuous harmony. A must! 30 ml: 45€ - 50 ml: 65€ - 100 ml: 92€

ACQUA DI PARMA
MAGNIOLIA NOBILE
Two “haute-couture” creations inspired by the wonderful world of the most sumptuous Italian gardens where the purest beauty is cultivated. Magical places, very exclusive and strictly reserved from which emanates a true nobility. Acqua di Parma recreates this universe through the most noble and emblematic flowers. A tribute to the majestic Magnolia flower, Magnolia Nobila from Aqua di Parma is a rich fragrance, almost luxurious in its impressions. A floral bouquet of rose, Jasmine and tiberose cradle notes of magnolia on a base of sandalwood and vetiver at the heart of this sunny perfume of aristocratic elegance. Spray 50ml: 79€ - 100ml: 107.40€
ARMANI IDOLE
“I have always carried with me an ideal of femininity – an irresistible combination of grace, beauty and independent spirit,” confesses the master of minimalist elegance, Giorgio Armani. His IDOLE is an ode to femininity. Exquisite, captivating, sexy and sensual, the Idole woman is expressive, free to be herself. An unexpected meeting between oriental inspiration and Italian elegance, the fragrance reveals an opulent floral intensity, tinged with divine Jasmine, spiced with bitter orange, saffron, ginger, davana, styrax, patchouli and vetiver. To capture this signature women’s fragrance, Giorgio Armani took inspiration from the 1930s. A crystal glass sphere, wonderfully curvaceous, ringed with delicate circular waves, an echo of the “O” in IDOLE. A golden nugget like a piece of jewellery dressed in a majestic flask. 30 ml: 46€, 50 ml: 66€, 75 ml: 86€
Dior’s legendary perfume, J’adore, is magnified with the glister of the most precious of metals. The heritage and skill of the House converge in the noblest expression of art in this wonderful element. “True luxury requires real materials and real craftsmanship,” said Monsieur Dior. Highly concentrated, the new fragrance is an Essence de Parfum, in the fundamental meaning of the term. Partly due to its exceptional concentration, the unique texture of the perfume creates a silky, satiny sensation when it touches the skin. A little stronger, the colour of the voluptuous nectar is almost golden. Rose de Mai and Jasmine de Grasse intoxicate the Tonka bean, Tahitian vanilla and patchouli, while the drops of labdanum and amber notes add an oriental aspect to this dream essence, majestically topped with a precious thread of gold. 40 ml: 113€
PACO RABANNE ONE MILLION
The weapon carried by today’s seducer is called 1 MILLION. The supreme object of desire, this ingot hides a liquid that is just as daring. Grapefruit, mint, blood clementine, Rose extract, cinnamon and other spicy notes are brought together in a harmony of amber and leather. A stunning contrast mixing refined sensuality and open virility.

GUCCI
GUCCI II
Gucci has always distinguished itself with the character and the quality of its fragrances for men. After a firstly, highly successful opus, Gucci pour homme II captures a beautiful Cyprus with a whiff of leather and spices – hot and smooth and dressed in blue. While having a very different fragrance from its predecessor, Gucci II perpetuates the same spirit of elegance. The hand-finished glass flask is also designed for the man who appreciates quality. Virile and sensual, Iris as a top note is accompanied by violet and cinnamon as well as tea, slightly bergamot, aromatic and smoky. This harmony - subtle, delicate and discrete - stretches out over a base of powdery musk, with tobacco, almond, hay and a hint of dark chocolate, bitter and spicy – absolutely delicious.
DOLCE & GABANNA THE ONE Gentleman
If “Men would love to be him, women to be his,” as say Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, The One Gentleman is perhaps the dream fragrance for the courteous, refined man who knows himself perfectly and hence has nothing to prove. A perfume for connoisseurs, impressive with its bouquet of oriental fern, embellished with a hint of lavender, pepper, cardamom and patchouli. This, with disturbing assurance, just like Matthew Mc Conaughey, is The One Gentleman, Irresistible! 50 ml – 55€. 100ml – 75€
YVES SAINT LAURENT
La nuit de l’homme
“Firstly charm, absolute charm,” a few words to sum up seduction according to the charismatic Vincent Cassel, the new ambassador for Yves Saint Laurent and its aptlynamed fragrance La nuit de l’homme. La nuit de l’homme evokes the intensely mysterious night of a man of dark beauty and ravishing charm. Disturbing, daring and dashing, this man reveals his darker and irresistibly attractive side. The powerful notes of labdanum and vetiver, combined with the black pepper at the heart of this perfume makes this a most seductive scent. 60 ml: 69€
PARFUMS D’ORSAY
Collection “Intense”Le Dandy
“Sublimate our emotions and nobly reveal our temperaments of fire,” that is what the Maison d’Orsay proposes through its new super-chic fragrance for men “Le Dandy”. As incarnated by its founder, Count Gabriel Alfred Guillaume d’Orsay, art and elegance have been divinely perpetuated through this prestigious house since 1830. Smart, charming, elegant, the dandy remains a true hedonist, in whom art and refinement are on display every day. The subtle blend of whisky and pineapple punctuated with notes of ginger and patchouli will appeal to the man who loves the finer things in life and a full-bodied fragrance. Majestic! 100ml: 83€

A Kelly... or therapy? Sooner or later we all get shopping fever. So what do our impulse, often exorbitant buys say about us? Should we splash out on a Kelly... or head straight to therapy? All is revealed by Quitterie Pasquesoone.
Y
ou walk into a Hermès store and come out a few minutes later, €4,000 worse off but carrying a sublime Kelly bag (for those lucky enough to jump the waiting list). It happens more often than you think. In a bid to fathom the reasons for my latest impulse buy (that famous handbag); I have decided to lift the veil on this phenomenon. How does this shopping fever come upon us out of the blue? Should we enjoy our purchase or run straight to our therapist? Whether it is a Kelly bag, a Vuitton suitcase of a pair of Louboutins, the struggle is the same and the question existential: why? Firstly, we are perhaps seeking a little recognition and self-confidence – with a designer accessory; one instantly creates the impression of being a grown-up woman! A case of the blues? A post break-up depression? A trip to Gucci and everything is rosy again! It is
48
much better for the morale (and less dangerous for the figure) than a hold-up at Ladurée. Maybe it is also to be part of the “club”. It is so much more chic to arrive at the Plaza for tea with a Hermès creation than a supermarket bag. The certainty of being part of high society is also that of being able to treat oneself to luxury. We are also doubtless attracted by the pleasure of collecting beautiful objects, works of art. What is more satisfying that lining up designer frocks and priceless bags in a dressing room? Many people collect paintings and their therapists don’t see anything wrong in that. So deep down, what is the harm in doing ourselves good? Finally, another symptom linked to shopping fever worthy of our attention is that of considering ones credit card as purely virtual. In short, it is a bottomless pit. But after all, when one has a four star gold card, one may as well use it. And your bank manager needn’t come complaining. After all, he
was the one who gave it to you! The line that must not be crossed? That of emptying the boutiques, going home deeply satisfied... simply to stuff all those bags in the back of a cupboard and never open them again. What about all those clothes (or bags or shoes or whatever) never worn? When you get down to it, an existential question is a thorny problem... Thorny maybe, but what better to handle it with than the softest leather fashioned by that god Hermès himself? Between a Kelly and therapy, my mind is made up...

SEX AND
THE CITY A few months ago “Sex and The City” made its big come back. No, not the series. The film. For this second vintage, director Michael Patrick King decided to take his cameras not to the tarmac of Fifth Avenue (a little over done maybe?) but to the sands of Abu Dhabi – a suitably fashionable destination! Between glasses of champagne, our four fashionistas kindly answered our New York correspondent’s questions. A sparkling interview… Remarks gathered by Frank ROUSSEAU in New York

W
hat is your vision of an ideal dressing room? “Sex and the City 2” shows, yet again, our four Amazons in outfits as glamorous as they are elegant.Watching the film though we couldn’t help but ask ourselves the question:Is it not too much, all this glitz and glamour while the whole world is in the midst of a recession?
S
arah Jessica Parker alias Carrie Bradshaw: Based on that principle you should also stop all the science-fiction films that the American cinema industry produces straight away because, in real life, we no longer have the means to explore other planets. Or maybe we should boycott war films because my government has decided to slash the defence budget! In making “Sex and the City 2” our vocation was not to provoke
56
those millions of women who dream of wearing haute couture but to add a little colour, some sparkle, some magic a little extravaganza to their daily grind. Just between us, since when was cinema supposed to stick to reality?
K
im Cattrall alias Samantha Jones: It’s a little facile to accuse us of that! Especially since we all know the luxury industry is an industry that still manages to generate healthy profits despite the international crises. And do you know why? Because women like to turn to safe bets, to those things that fulfil them, to those things that make them happy. It’s been said before but buying an Haute Couture dress is like setting your heart on a diamond. You are sure of making a
good investment. Look how much vintage clothes fetch today. Some reach astronomical amounts! Personally, the real quality of “Sex and the City 2” is that it carries a simple message. And that message is this: We women are all conditioned by fashion. Whatever our income is, our social background, our cultural baggage, wherever we live. The desire to please, the desire to feel beautiful is and always will be one of our priorities. And deep down fashion is universal and knows no borders. ristin Davis alias Charlotte York: Did you see The Post? (An American tabloid). A journalist said the production had blown $10 million on luxury clothes and accessories alone! I don’t know where the journalist got that from but it’s
K
complete nonsense! “Sex and the City” may have spent a lot of money dressing our characters but nowhere near that kind of extravagant sum …
C
ynthia Nixon alias Miranda Hobbes: Simply because you have a lot of designer labels who have appreciated the show over the years and are delighted to generously lend their clothes. (“Lend” is perhaps not the right word given that of the 41 dresses worn by SJP in the film, the actress kept 70%). We were one of the first series to show so many outfits. It’s even a little because of us that certain labels that used to be inaccessible are now more affordable. “Sex and the City” is a fully-fledged shop window …
Kim Cattrall: it’s the one you’ll never have because it would be the size of a football field! (Laughs). Personally I have learned to be selective with time. From the age of 20 to 30 I never threw anything out. I had boxes for ribbons, another for belts. I was collapsing under a mountain of shoes and of course dresses. What took up the most space were the coats. During the 80s, I don’t know if you remember, the shoulder pads were excessive. I can assure you I have got rid of them all. Frankly, we all looked like rugby prop forwards with those horrors on our backs! For me, the ideal dressing room is the “basics”. A few little black numbers for a chic evening, some brightly coloured dresses to make sure the photographers don’t miss you on the red carpet and finally a large choice of shoes because as you know the first thing one notices about a woman is what she’s wearing on her feet! Sarah Jessica Parker: My dressing room is a place where I like to spend a lot of time it goes without saying. But I have to have room to move around in it. Manhattan dressing rooms are small. And given that on top of that I stuff toys, push chairs and other children’s stuff in there, essential space
is substantially reduced. That’s why I have moved a large part of my wardrobe into a basement I own. It’s not very big but it did enable me to unblock this room that was about to burst a little! Obviously all my clothes are protected from the damp and the door is reinforced! That way no-one’s likely to rob me. My ideal dressing room is also a sort of museum. Let me explain. For years now I have been accumulating, or rather piling up, all sorts of outfits that production companies have kindly given me or which belonged to my mother. It has to be said I have a microscopic size and so these clothes that have been made especially for me can’t be sold on! Sometimes they are even one-offs. I have huge admiration for these designers, for the nimble fingers, these artists who create a dress, a suit, an accessory. For me these are geniuses in their own right. Besides the making of them, a piece of clothing to my mind often says more about a time that many a thesis or book on the subject. When I touch my velvet dungarees for example, that reminds me of when I was pregnant. My denim skirts remind me of my teens. As for my stretch miniskirts, they are from a time when I wanted to make clear my sexual “availability”! (Laughs). Lately I admit I have lost it a bit with shoes. I couldn’t tell you exactly how many pairs I’ve got! But I could tell you in precise detail on exactly what occasion I wore them!
Kristin Davis: The ideal dressing room can be summed up in one word: “quality”. I would rather have a few items of clothing that are well-cut, wellfitted clothes in quality fabric, hanging elegantly on coat hangers than a multitude of clothes piled up. For a long time I favoured economy over quality. It’s a fatal mistake because if I were to add up the hundreds of sweaters, pants and shirts that I had to throw out too soon because the material was “made-from-I-don’t-know-quite-what” I could have “invested” in “classics” capable of resisting the assault of time without any trouble! Cynthia Nixon: We actresses have a privilege and that privilege is that many designers ask us to wear their creations. The trap is in being “picked up”, becoming their ambassador without even noticing it. I decided to adopt the tack of wearing what my instinct told me to wear and not what such-or-such a designer pushed me to put on my back … or my bum! My dressing room is entirely filled with clothes I fell for and not necessarily designer labels. A little tip: Never listen to the advice of girlfriends because tell yourself this, no woman, even if she is someone very close to you, will put up with you shining more than she does. We women, we work like that. We are a little bitchy and we don’t do each other any favours once it comes to standing out during an evening!
57
interview
A
fter the age of 40, the glam-attitude can fade a little. Do you have any advice for those who would like to shine again?
Sarah: It doesn’t matter how often it’s said, there is nothing more erotic than a warm voice, a touch gravelly. Don’t push it if it’s making your vocal cords suffer! High heels obviously help create the vampfatale ambience. But you should of course avoid 10 cm heels if up until now you only wear sneakers. You don’t want your man mistaking you for a crab! Kristin: The ruffled hair look isn’t bad either. Stand in front of him, your hair in a tight chignon. He thinks you are a strict, uptight, untouchable girl and then, just when he least expects it tad dah, you undo your hair with your head swaying backwards. Cynthia: There is no need to spend a fortune on silicon injections. To get that plump-lipped look all you need is a good dose of red – very red – lip pencil, a good gloss and there you have it. Then you just need to go for it. As long as you open your mouth wide and he’ll replay the best scenes from 9 ½ Weeks!
Une qualité éternelle et une valeur qui dure.
Kim: Avoid outfits that are too cheap: boobs spilling out of a Wonderbra and mini skirts that reveal all. Showing off too much can scare a lot of men. Opt instead for skin-toned underwear because then men can’t help but wonder: “Is she wearing any?” Another good tip: casually lift up you bra strap, if possible while commenting on the drop in value of the Dow Jones... For the bottom half, adopt the suit and heels look, the skirt slit up the side. It’s a fact – they all dream of flirting with an oriental courtesan!
What brand would you really splash out on? Kristin: I wear a lot of vintage Valentino. These are 80s clothes that I have picked up. I also like wearing Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors. Kim: I admit I have a huge admiration for Armani, Valentino and Balenciaga clothes. As a general rule I like close-fitting clothes. Cynthia: I am a total fan of Vivienne Tam, Gianfranco Ferre and Marc Bouwer. I like wellfitting, brightly coloured clothes. But normally I wear practical, functional, casual clothes. Nothing fancy. In short I am not a fashion victim at all. Sarah: OK, I admit it. When I come across a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s I’m ashamed to say I cannot resist. I am so addicted that when a model isn’t made any more or can’t be found I buy second hand!

UPS A designer in time for tea! Our society is very decidedly ruled by the diktats of fashion! We find our beloved designers everywhere – even in our teacups in the shape of teabags! What a joy to be able to share a quiet moment with Karl, Jean Paul, Donatella or Naomi. It’s Prêt-à-porTEA! (By Donkey Creative Lab) On your bike! The days when the humble bike was a common mode of transport are over.... It is blatantly obvious; pushing those pedals is ultra in! And our friends the stars already know it - from Vanessa Bruno to Leonardo di Caprio, they have all adopted the environmentallyfriendly option. The city bike is back in fashion, who would have thought it? Mind you, a little sport never did anyone any harm... So on your bikes!
The neo-pony tail No time to spend hours at Alexandre Zouari’s, but a burning desire to have the perfect hairdo? The pony tail is the answer! Funky, child-like, strict or simple, it can give you a sophisticated look in a trice and was all over the haute couture catwalks and the last Louis Vuitton campaign. “Pull all the hair back and up with some volume at the back of the head; avoid pins by using a smooth hair band, create volume by teasing the base of the ponytail slightly, draw out one lock and wind it around the hair band,” recommends Salomé from the Dubai salon. To avoid looking too “classical”, add a little something which will make all the difference: headbands, slides, ribbons, almost magical texturising products... In the end the ultra-styled look isn’t so complicated! Don’t hold back, the glam is with you. American Dream In two words: Mad Men. We started by fantasising over Don Draper; in the end it was the style of his wife Betty that completely won us over! Plunging necklines, a new length in skirts, brushing half way
down the calf: but what has happened to the androgynous look so beloved of our beloved designers?! A 180-degree turn for a fashion that is a tad bourgeois and very definitely retro, celebrating the almost obsolete Fifties that has pushed its way onto the catwalks. Born out of the success of the series Mad Men, the “new-look” look has completely conquered Planet Fashion from the catwalk to the glossies without even mentioning the coming biopic on Jackie Kennedy which should showcase a look more “Lady” than “Hippy-Chick”. It remains to be seen whether this change of direction will be perceived as a backward step reeking of mothballs or as the consecration of femininity rediscovered. But where did Bardot disappear to?! Bespoke Burberry. Renowned for its legendary trench coats, reworked by the talented Christopher Bailey, Burberry is now enabling its most chic clientele to personalise their trench in a click. Thanks to Bespoke, every one of us can now pick the fabric, collar, pattern, buttons, leather patches and, of course, have it initialled! How smart. In all, 12 million combinations are possible. So will your be more Windsor or Agyness?! Liliane B. After all, she is the one who has made the most headlines this year, far more than Scarlett, Angelina and Beyoncé combined. Because she’s worth it!

DOWNS The total leopard look: Let’s get this perfectly straight: yes feline prints are back in our wardrobes in every way... but beware, that is no reason to look like you have stepped off the stage of Lion King! So we will studiously avoid the style adopted by certain actresses playing Queen of the Savannah on the red carpet. Too much is too much!!! So a fashionable touch of leopard skin yes – from head to toe NO! Thank you. Completely gaga...! A fashion icon recently reconverted into “gore” icon - a steak in guise of a hat, a roast on each foot and slabs of meat over her body. No, you didn’t break a tooth on an E; it’s only Lady Gaga at the latest MTV Music Awards! There are two possible explanations:
60
either Lady Gaga didn’t know what to do after her dinner with Alejandro or she is getting into character for a role in a horror movie called “The Blood-stained Butcher”! No but seriously, what were you thinking Lady? Reality TV The amount of reality TV exhibitionism is just too much. Between life on the farm, a race to infidelity and live surgery – and the list goes on and on – reality TV has put us through hell! What finer example than the Dutch show “Babies for Rent”? I kid you not – in this show parents lend their own children to young couples wanting to try out the pleasures of parenthood in front of the cameras. . . At least you cannot accuse the production companies of lacking imagination. When it comes to making money, the ideas flow!
Lemon yellow! Bleach-blond hair, so graphic in Topolino photo shoots in the nineties, revived recently be the eccentric Lady Gaga (yes, her again!), yet so difficult to pull off in real, unphoto-shopped life! Straw, sunflower, lemon yellow . . . so many adjectives to perfectly describe the ultimate hairstyle faux pas! A hair-dye mistake or just poor taste?! Please, too much information already. So enough with the egg-yolk look, get yourself to a salon and change colour! Monsieur Zouari, heeeelp! C H R O N O G R A P H E

saga
From Moscow to New York The shop windows of the House, the Zilli boutiques, are present in the capitals and cities around the world. Its international profile has made Zilli the foremost luxury French menswear brand in the major cities of Europe (Paris, London, Geneva, Brussels, Rome…). In the east, Moscow, Kiev, Budapest and Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan all have their Zilli store. The House has even managed to break through in countries where there is no apparent need to wear furs. In Beirut, Cairo and Alexandria as well as in Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, Zilli has faithful clients and numerous sales outlets. Last October, the brand opened its first boutique in the USA, in New York - in the Four Seasons Hotel building at number 57, 57th Street: recognition.

store, converting part of a townhouse in the very chic Triangle d’Or at 48, Rue François 1er into a boutique and showroom. The conquest of new markets and the development of brand recognition accelerated. Always ambitious and intuitive, Alain Schimel saw in the new Millennium by launching in Duty Free. With this, Zilli became the world’s premier hand-sewn tie maker.
Excellence and a family feeling The explanation for this incredible success is to be found in the demanding standards of the House, which represents all the values of French luxury: excellence, craftsmanship elevated to an art form and the use of first class primary materials. Indeed, only the best skins, furs and cloth are used: washed lamb, ostrich, crocodile, peccary, cashmere, guanaco, vicuña, silk and sable - even the famous black velvet chinchilla, the most priceless of furs, of which Zilli snaps up three quarters of global production. The fabrics are just as rare and exceptional: Sea Island cotton, Duchess Silk, and Super 200… Each item is a one-off; some require a gargantuan amount of work! Furthermore, Zilli has exclusivity on exceptional products like the “all alligator” briefcase made

rom the beginning, the House of Zilli appealed to the great and the good of this world. The company prefers to remain discreet about those it dresses on a regular basis, out of respect for its clients’ private lives. But Zilli is proud to count figures such as John Lennon and Francis Bacon among the list of those it has honoured through its creations. Although relatively unknown in its native France, the House of Zilli is an international success - more than 90% of sales are abroad. This family business, fiercely protective of its independence, has built an empire spanning the hemispheres. It was in 1970 that Alain Schimel met the tailor Théophile Zilli. The two men launched a business making luxury leather jackets. For the next 25 years, the company would concentrate on sportswear, before developing a full line of menswear, to which they added an accessories range. The brand became more visible in 1983 with the opening of the first Zilli boutique in London’s New Bond Street, the epitome of English elegance. Then in 1990, the first French store opened in Paris, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. A key step in increasing the company’s profile came three years later through the opening of a first boutique in Moscow. In 1995, Zilli left the Faubourg Saint Honoré to open its flagship

A golden anniversary 2010 is most definitely Zilli’s year. To celebrate its fortieth birthday, the prestigious brand has launched its first Eyewear collection in partnership with the designer Eric Jean. It comprises a collection of lenses and four collections of sunglasses including one range completely in gold! For the first time a layer of 24-carat gold has been applied to a polarised lens giving a unique gold mirror effect. These glasses are available in a limited edition exclusive to Zilli boutiques in Paris, Cannes, London and New York. Besides this golden eye, the label renewed its cultural commitment, supporting the retrospective on contemporary artist, Béatrice Caracciolo, at the Villa Médicis, from January 24 to March 14 2010. Rather than being influenced by the vagaries of fashion, Zilli has developed its own style which has become a real trademark, in which elegance triumphs over trends, discreetly and perfectly. The label’s logo – a zip pull in the shape of a gold ingot – will shine for a long time yet!
entirely by hand by one craftsman and adorned with a clasp available in five styles and three different golds. The client’s every need is attended to, their every wish catered for and that is why in the workshops in Lyon and Italy special orders are on the rise, representing up to 20 or 30% or the total. The family atmosphere has also contributed to the success of the brand. In contrast to many major luxury labels, Zilli has managed to remain an entirely family business. Laurent, the son of the President Alain Schimel, holds the post of General Manager, while his older sister, Alexandra, runs the Image and Public Relations department in Paris. Lastly, Roberta Ficocchi, Alain Schimel’s wife, is the artistic director of the collections. But Zilli’s success is also down to the diversification that has been taking place over the last 15 years or so. To the leather jackets and Russian overcoats have been added elegant suits, as well as poplin shirts, silk ties, leather goods and shoes … The basics of menswear now make up half of turnover. And the ladies have not been forgotten as the brand has created a collection of stunning furs and stylish leather goods just for them. The bestselling Domitille bag is every bit a match for the famous Kelly!

uly 5 2010. The Institut du Monde Arabe. Winter collection 2010-2011. The blaring techno has a heavy drum and strong base about it. At the end of the catwalk graphic and distinctly geometric images flash in time with the music. There are stroboscopes and fluorescent yellows. The A-V logo is beamed in swirls around the room. Without warning the Vauthier girls arrive... one after the other. Their steps are rhythmic, heavy but fast. They are conquering and haughty, super glam and sexy. Fur is in the foreground, in the shape of short black jackets and boleros over strict, knee-length white dresses. The leg-of-mutton sleeves are exaggeratedly heavy. The shoulders are all radically squared and the waists strangled by large black knots. Trousers are tapered, and linear in contrast to the very puffed sleeves of the jackets while the draped necklines more than plunge, leaving the breasts free to dance insolently. Breasts which are often visible through sheer lace. Black, white, purple and gold: the palette is simple, sufficient, coherent and, in short, ultra chic. The V shape is ubiquitous, the chiffon capes, the draped jersey, the flounces reminiscent of dorsal fins, sequins... The new Vauthier rules are brought together, spectacular and photogenic. And the audience goes wild!
Vauthier? Yes please!
He’s the new sensation, the new darling of recent seasons. In just four Haute Couture shows, the designer Alexandre Vauthier has managed to win over celebrities, the press and the public unanimously with his idea of a sexy, theatrical woman, ultra-glamorous and a femme fatale of course! Madonna and Rihanna are simply crazy about him and with reason: Vauthier clothes are sublime. A portrait of the spiritual son of Mugler and Gaultier (whose assistant he was). A portrait of a great future... By Yvo Deprelle. Photos Dominique Maitre.

At the school of Mugler and Gaultier First impressions. The man is handsome, muscled, athletic, in a word: a thoroughbred. With his shaven head and three-day beard, Alexandre Vauthier is almost intimidating. Often in jeans and a suit jacket, he is impeccable, always elegant and extremely courteous. It should be no surprise given that his vision of women is also impeccable. Unfortunately his appearances are still rare. This discreet designer prefers to devote his time to his work. Born in Agen in 1971, he came to Paris at the age of 20 after studying law. He then threw himself enthusiastically into fashion studies at the Esmod School. In 1993 he joined the cult studio of Thierry Mugler. For Vauthier, Mugler represented – and with reason – the absolute master of the architecture of clothing of the time. This great opportunity turned out to be four years of good, solid training in the midst of the Couture workshops and spurred him to go even further. Not a bad start! Then, in 1997, he joined Jean-Paul Gaultier as Head Designer for the still nascent Couture collection. He was to remain there for eight years. This rich and rewarding experience with one of the most prestigious fashion houses filled him with the desire to strike out on his own. Why not let his personality express itself fully through his own label?! His professional collaborations in Japan and numerous trips to the USA enriched his already strong creative universe and sewed the seed of an idea for his first collection. Fast forward to 2008: Vauthier takes the leap and opens his own Haute Couture house. The
die are cast. A few months later, on January 28 2009 he presents his first work at the Maison des Métallos, during Paris Fashion Week. Some 22 creations with spectacular structures and volumes which are still his trademark, take the catwalk by storm. The surprise and success are immediate. A mini revolution begins...
Venus in furs The seasons roll by and we are already awaiting the fifth Alexandre Vauthier show. In just a few collections he has managed to create a style that is very much his own and instantly recognisable with highly structured, almost sculpted geometric shapes. His natural need for rigour, his precision and the radical quality of his cuts express themselves though a style inspired by French culture and his Anglo-Saxon influences. This mix becomes a proper little laboratory in which he can work and rework the rules of timeless elegance and transpose them onto his own vision of modernity. And he evidently loves it! From the first glance, the evidence of the filiations with Mugler and Gaultier is noticeable. The Vauthier style takes up but then adapts the style of the 1980s. A V-shaped figure, outsize shoulders, pinched-in waists, puff-ball sleeves: one cannot help but think of the years of Mugler, Montana and Alaïa. But Vauthier gives them an extreme, more radical treatment. Everything is bigger, more excessive, more “exaggerated”! Even the gigantic shoulder-pads are shown naked, adorned with Swarovski crystals. Likewise for the draping, the wraps, the dresses and the general “looseness”. This time we travel back to the 70s and the gorgeous evening gowns of Féraud, Azzaro’s wraps, YSL’s transparencies and the plunging necklines of Guy Laroche. But once again, everything is reworked: the necklines are even more vertiginous, jumpsuits and diaphanous dresses and fused through an ingenious set of flounces... The strength of the designer is to have known how to reinterpret these past influences by reworking them. In doing so he creates new rules of elegance, this time personal, completely contemporary if not futuristic... The Vauthier woman has an impressive armoury for seduction! Vamp and glamorous, graphic and photogenic, she knows how to tread red carpets and stages the world over. Indeed, the femmes fatales of the day, Madonna, Rihanna and Mélanie Laurent cannot do without him! Lady Gaga and Grace Jones are set to follow suit, how could they not? So why not awaken the Diva in you?! Find Vauthier at Bon Marché and in his workshop, 11 bis rue du Perche, Paris 3ème, France. Tel: +33 (0)1 42 71 90 96.

Of A New World. The magnetism of the Orient, a feeling that you are witnessing the birth of new Babels, of new pyramids. «Desert Forever», wrote Jean Baudrillard to conjure up the dream-reality that is California. The Emirates? Well they are not very far away... Just a little bit of planet separates the destiny of these lands of sand. The sand of the hourglass where the present is already the past, the sand of the builders who dare turn architectural fantasies into reality, the imaginary sand of mirages. Shangri-La Hotel
Qaryat Al Beri Abu Dhabi full scale luxury.
It is within this wonderful setting that 214 rooms and suites, including six villas of some 600m², are laid out. Decorated in a contemporary Arabian style, they are a subtle blend of luxury and refinement that is Shangri-La’s own; respecting the past but happily incorporating all that you would expect in an authentic, top class hotel. Chocolatecoloured precious wood, sculptured doors, extravagant velvet, marble baths, outsize chaise-longues stretching to vast private terraces over-looking the private beach. On the food front, we loved the «Pearls & Caviar» of course. Besides the succulent seafood platters and other delicious offerings such as the «Curry laksa bisque», this restaurant is the latest glam address in Abu Dhabi. The Shangri-La is an exceptional voyage in itself, a real meeting
of the senses. As well as the discreet and refined service, every effort is made to offer you top-of-therange comfort for a dream stay. Between two outings, you will doubtless appreciate the sublime spa, with the world-renowned «CHI». It really completes this magnificent luxury complex, offering precious moments of relaxation and well-being like a peaceful retreat. Whatever you are looking for, a visit here will really restore your energy, like taking in oxygen. The wide range of well-being rituals on offer means you are sure to find just what you are looking for. Choose between «The Indulgence of Time», «Enchanted Journey», «The Traveller’s Retreat» or «Paradise Found» to restore harmony. The «Serenity» ritual deserves a special mention. It includes four exotic treatments,
specially developed for CHI, The Spa at ShangriLa: a Coffee Bean Scrub for a natural exfoliation, the Rose & Honey Linen Wrap which gently rehydrates a CHI Balance Massage and a Tropical Rejuvenating Facial to complete your sense of wellbeing. So chase away stress and morosity! Head to the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi, for a trip that is pure paradise. tip for travellers heading to Abu Dhabi, an increasingly popular destination especially with the Louvre museum and the Guggenheim Foundation soon inaugurating Oriental annexes here. The Persian Gulf is brimming with treasures and the Shangri-La is one of them. This stunning establishment, straight out of your dreams is hidden in the very heart of this oasis. This year Beyoncé has popped in for a visit and it is not unusual to bump into all of Abu Dhabi’s high society at the Shangri-La enjoying a weekend brunch or relaxing at the Al Hanah bar. Just opposite the majestic Grand Mosque, this fabulous resort stretches put over nearly nine hectares of gardens. Also in the Le Corbusier style, there is a certain impression of space turned towards the exterior. Through the minimalist style, reinterpreted by Kevin Dash, and the use of geometric shapes especially pilotis, Le Gray is an aesthetic pleasure with a multiplication of view points as one moves through the interior of the hotel. As Le Corbusier said: “It is the hundreds of successive perceptions that create the architectural feel».
Beirut Le Gray Hotel A Minimalist Palace.
The PureGray spa offers a range of inventive and effective treatments to ensure guests’ well-being. There is the “Jet-Lag recovery”, ideal after a long flight, or the sublime “Diamond Facial” which, in an hour and a half, gives you the same healthy glow as a fortnight’s holiday with its 30 Natura Bissé products complete with carats! Also, the massage menu is a delight with treatments such as “Volcanic Hot Stone Therapy” which promises to restore energy, detoxify and unlock tension in every muscle through its thermo therapeutic technique. As throughout the hotel, attention has been paid to each area of the spa, even down to the corridor, completely lined with exotic wood, which leads you to the treatment room.
J
ust like its distinguished owner, Gordon Campbell Gray, the Le Gray Hotel simply stands out. Classically elegant, Le Gray is an ode to authentic luxury. A far cry from the pseudo-baroque or designer diktats that went out of fashion in a matter of months, Le Gray is firstly an incredible collection of contemporary art, an architecture that plays with perspective, an attention to the very finest detail, service worthy of the best addresses in London, as well as a cuisine that would turn many a French restaurant green with envy! If Beirut is the most European of Arab cities, Le Gray is a concentration of the know-how and people skills of the most beautiful capitals of the world – all under one roof. An invitation to new modernity. The younger brother of the famous One Aldwych and Dukes in London and the prestigious Carlisle Bay in Antigua, Le Gray is fully booked almost 365 days a year. An amazing example of the work of the Australian architect, Kevin Dash and the British interior designer Mary Fox Linton, Le Gray enjoys an ideal location in the heart of Beirut. Just 15 minutes from the airport, Le Gray is located at the crossing of the new Solidere district, the “place to be” for smart young Lebanese with its designer cafés and luxury stores such as Hermès, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Louboutin. Just around the corner, one finds the very essence of Beirut: its mosque, its church, its delightful boutiques and traditional restaurants where one can enjoy a rose water pipe between a visit to a museum and a shopping trip with friends. Immersed in the centre of Beirut, Le Gray is rapidly becoming an essential fixture on the Lebanese scene. Le Gray perfectly meets the needs of the modern, fast-moving world. The hotel on the legendary Place des Martyrs, Beirut’s Ground Zero, readily broke the rules for luxury establishments. Following its own credo instead, opulence and baroque far from being de rigueur have made way for minimalism, purity and the basic essentials. From the lobby to the vast rooms and suites (60m² minimum) via the spa and on up to the panoramic view from the roof top, well-being is everywhere. At Le Gray businessmen organise meetings, the bright and beautiful chat in the Three Sixty bar and others indulge themselves in a little pampering at the PureGray Spa. 124

Le Gray Beirut porary art For its extraordinary contem must! A collection on every floor!
At Le Gray, the intelligent yet sensual minimalist design is carried through to the rooms, each a model of understated luxury. For example, the furniture instantly adapts to your changing needs: you can dress in front of a full length mirror fitted into the wardrobe; work at an attractive desk where the chrome-plated sockets can accommodate your laptop, USB keys and other devices and style your hair with a professional hair-dryer which does not cut out every few seconds. At last! Thank you for that Le Gray! The top-of-the-range bed linen is an invitation to sweet dreams, while the gorgeous, slate-lined bathrooms come complete with Aqua televisions facing the immaculate bath; ideal for playing a modern-day Cleopatra with the natural Ren products provided for you by Le Gray.
The ever increasing number of people visiting Beirut on business trips flock to this contemporary atmosphere, perfect for those seeking inspiration or peace and quiet, while visitors from the Middle East and beyond discover a spot that breaths the attractive force of Beirut . The clean, graceful graphics of Le Gray are matched in their refinement by the purity of the materials used throughout the hotel: from the exotic wood panelling to the shantung silk curtains at the windows that frame the view of the Beirut. The state-of-the-art sound and light systems, with their precision settings, deserve a special mention: perfection. As for colours, Le Gray could be based on the Le Corbusier palette. The soft nuanced prints are in perfect harmony with the light natural tones, filling guests with a sense of peaceful relaxation.
Decorated with sixties and seventies touches, the Pool Lounge looks out on the blue of the Mediterranean Sea, Mount Lebanon, the city centre and the neighbouring mosque. We love the heated but chlorine-free vanishing edge swimming pool from which one can look down on Beirut before plunging into the majestic Gordon Campbell Gray library, decorated with cubist and pop-art works. As popular with foreigners as it is with the Lebanese High-Society, the Indigo on the Roof offers a panoramic view of Beirut, and international and Lebanese cuisine. What do they have in common? The quality of the produce. We cannot recommend highly enough the delicious Argentinian beef, the excellent locally-fished calamari or the succulent mezze, accompanied by a delightful Lebanese wine chosen from the 300 grands crus on a wine list that earned Le Gray the highly-respected Wine-Spectator’s 2010 Award of Excellence. For organic food fans the breakfast is an ode to freshness: delicious homemade jams (yes, even better than your grandmother’s!) muffins straight from the over and freshly-squeezed fruit juice make for an authentic and pleasurably break. Large spaces bathed in light, an exceptional art collection, the aroma of rare cigars, culinary art available at any time for a very reasonable price: Le Gray is more than a hotel. Le Bristol Paris 8éme
With its fifth star now shining brightly, Le Bristol can boast of being an Haute Couture hotel. Ideally located a stone’s throw from the Avenue Montaigne, with a garden of Eden of some 1,200m² and three stars in the Michelin Guide, Le Bristol remains a unique spot in Paris, as much because of its attentive service as its extreme refinement. Its quest for excellence is evident in the complete renovation of Le Bristol’s La Résidence, a true window on the French art of living. On the gastronomic front, the first Monday of every month Le Bristol invites an independent vintner whose wine (which will be featured throughout the month) is accompanied by a special menu for the evening. Another major initiative from the manager, Didier Le Calvez, is the creation of a tailor-made breakfast in the restaurant with personal service especially adapted for business breakfasts. And lastly Le Bristol’s bar now features a pianist every evening from 8.30 pm to 11.30 pm, setting the most famous meeting place in Paris to music. Exceptional! Photo © Sordello

Hôtel De Vendôme Paris 1er
Just a few steps from the very smart Rue Saint Honoré, the Hôtel de Vendôme lets you in on some genuine historical secrets, illustrating each stage of the reign of the Sun King. Indeed this unique hotel was built in 1722 by Pierre Périn, the personal secretary of Louis XIV and its architecture and decoration reflects one of the great eras of French history. High ceilings, exceptional chandeliers, frescoes, period furniture and rare marble run throughout the 29 rooms and suites. The individual interior design of each one gives the hotel a spirit that cannot be found anywhere else. The restaurant, now in the hands of new chef, Nicolas Rucheton, offers gourmet cuisine at very reasonable prices. The new décor by architect Michele Bönan is wonderfully “Monsieur Dior” with its comfortable hound’s-tooth armchairs and famous soft-gray. This elegant and understated atmosphere remains popular with businessmen and fashionistas alike as they pass through Paris. The bar, with its very British look, serves some of the best cocktails in the capital in an ambiance softened by wonderful exotic woods, prints and Chesterfield sofas. The Hôtel de Vendôme, an historic jewel not to be missed!

Just like Saint Germain des Prés, the Bel Ami aims to be contemporary, smart and relaxed. Elegance and minimalism are the key words in this hotel which is so easy to stay in. Some 111 rooms and suits decorated in warm shades of chocolate and other goodies (orange, cumin and cinnamon for example) are filled with a cosy and inviting atmosphere – a trademark of the Bessé group. As for the B.A. Bar, it remains one of the most fun places of the Left Bank with its black and white film shows, exhibitions of photos and sculptures and fashion shows etc. The stage for cultural events, the B.A. Bar follows very much in the literary and artistic tradition of the quarter, through its Bel Ami literary award and its BAzz evenings, where the only place to be is at perched at its Bisazza mosaic bar. The suites on the top floor, recently renovated and decorated by the brilliant stylist, Marina Bessé, are enough to make anyone swoon. They also lovingly illustrate the hotel’s past. Built on the former premises of a magnificent 18th century printing works, it is filled with the aroma of old books, wooden shelves and comfortable armchairs. The spirit of Maupassant, charmer, dreamer, occasional dandy, watches over the destiny of Bel Ami, a most fashionable address. 7/11 rue St-Benoît - 75006 Paris - France Tel. +33 (0)1 42 61 53 53 www. hotel-bel-ami.com - resa@hotel-bel-ami.com 126

Hôtel Du President Wilson
Geneva
After a year of works, the Président Wilson now boasts a new contemporary, most refined look. For its make-over, the famous hotel with a breathtaking view of Lake Geneva came under the magic wand of the graphic designer Stefan Siegel and the celebrated Genevois architects’ workshop 3BM3 coordinated by Carmelo Stendardo and Bénédicte Montant. Arranged around the themes of water, countryside and light, each element highlights the splendour of nature. White Carrara marble adorned with Swarovski crystals, gold, platinum and other fine materials beautify this most poetic spot. The water-drop ceilings, the Moroso armchairs, or indeed the two chimneys that preside in majesty over the lobby, invite you into a place of mystery. On the art side, you will find works by the celebrated South Korean artist Lee Jae-Hyo who is passionate about nature in its raw form. Light colours, pared-down furniture and bedding worthy of a king give the rooms a peaceful atmosphere while the panoramic view of the lake is an invitation to contemplation and day-dreaming. The new Salon Oriental merits a special mention. Quite luxurious, it is well worth dropping in for a drink or a meal, lit by rock crystal lamps handmade at the legendary Mathieu Lustrerie. A subtle blend of art and design, the Président Wilson figures among the best addresses in Geneva, whether it be just for an evening or for a most civilised stay.

First Class Weekend
With winter comes the desire to get away from it all. Between a weekend of light at the fully-restored La Mamounia and a great escape to Courchevel at the stunning Lana, forget yourself for three days and two nights and relax to the calming mantra of guaranteed chic.
My week-end at La Mamounia The majestic gardens of Majorelle, the exuberant Djemaa el-Fna Square, the Atlas Mountains stretching off into the distance…Just a three-hour flight from Paris or Geneva is a magic and enchanting setting worthy of a Thousand and One Nights. The great and the good from the world over come here; you can even spot the occasional minister on holiday. If you feel like playing a pasha or the Queen of Sheba then La Mamounia, a Red City gem, offers you a waking dream. By Laure Delvigo
T
his is a trip you come back from delighted; it is an enchanting break. And yet you dare not quite believe it at first. The images that spring to mind are so legendary, they belong to history with a capital H: Winston Churchill smoking his cigar, Alfred Hitchcock filming a few scenes from The Man Who Knew Too Much, Charles de Gaulle or Valéry Giscard d’Estaing discussing foreign policy in the park, Colette writing her memoires, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker sunbathing by the swimming pool, the designer Jean-Paul Gaultier sketching his collections in one of La Mamounia’s seven private riads… Nowadays we think of Marrakesh as a bit of a «been there, done that» destination and yet, we were wonderstruck! Barely had we stepped from the airplane at Marrakesh airport than we fell under its charm. Smart hotels are flourishing in the city. But while other guests were picked up in logo-strewn minibuses, it was a Jaguar that has come to take us to our hotel. The tone was set. La Mamounia places the bar high, very high.
130
What’s more the chauffeur was so friendly we almost forgot our journey rendered so difficult by the strikes in Paris (my mind is made up - next time I’m going from Geneva!). But the real magic began once we turned off the road and into the hotel grounds. Driving through the spectacular entrance, complete with two belvederes in wood so finely sculpted it resembles lace; the vision was enough to take your breath away. One look at our blissful smiles revealed how delighted we were. We began, of course, in the lobby after an arrival worthy of a head of state with four guards waiting at the entrance! The welcome was wonderfully warm despite it being two in the morning! There was even milk perfumed with orange blossom and exquisite dates. I completed the formalities under the watchful eye of an imperial statue by Rachid Khimoune, Eve Ruggieri’s companion. Then we were led to Suite 90. Ultimate luxury. Shades of purple, beige, khaki, golden ochre, a sand-coloured padded bed-head, linen sheets, curtains in wild silk, red velvet, marble and Zellige mosaics. Especially noteworthy is the
sumptuous dressing room with its made-to-measure furniture covered in Hermès-style saffron leather. The mashrabiya offered a wonderful visual voyage with a play on perspectives that brought together the Jacques Garcia style, instantly recognisable. The terrace on every floor just kept the dream going, as did the backdrop of a forest of olive trees, the orange trees in the park, the minaret of the Koutoubia and even the snowy peaks of the Atlas Mountains. In fact at La Mamounia the dream just goes on and on. Antique, elegant furniture, bars with delicious champagne cocktails, just the right amount of the latest music, charming and attentive service which anticipates your every wish...Needless to say it is difficult to drag yourself away to dine in town. “La Mamounia is a self-contained resort in its own right. Our clients don’t come to Marrakesh, they come to La Mamounia,” explains Communications Director Jalila El Ofir.

A
lthough the renovation project that turned La Mamounia into a luxury hotel lasted 36 months and cost 120€ million, there is still an air of authenticity throughout the complex. And if you need convincing, then go no further than the Le Marocain restaurant. Sheltered in a sumptuous riad in the heart of the grounds, here you can enjoy real Moroccan cuisine blending tradition and modernity against a backdrop of «live» Oud music. Savour a delicious honey Pastilla Wazzania followed by lobster tagine, an inspiration of the Chef Rachid Agouray. At the Le Français it is hard to resist the delicious fish and seafood, caught not far away like the spider crab meat from Oualidia prepared by the team of Jean-Pierre Vigato, two Michelin stars for Apicius in Paris, while Don Alfonso (also two stars in Capri) has come up with a divine risotto of green asparagus and ricotta flavoured with thyme at the L’Italian restaurant. You can also enjoy breakfast, lunch, or drinks at the sublime Pavillon de La Piscine. Ah a Mojito while your feet dangle in the water at sunset! Another institution here is the park. More than a patch of greenery looking down on the Red City, the grounds at La Mamounia are legendary. In times gone by Prince Mamoun used the palace for his «nzahas», a common custom in many Moroccan cities comparable to a garden party. The magnificent gardens are designed around amazing fruit trees and flowers such as Madagascar periwinkle, Barbary fig, hundred-year-old olive trees and bewitching bougainvilleas. They all blend naturally in a joyful disorder and the scents wafting up from fragrant flowers are amazing. From the gardens you can often here a delightful melody. This probably comes from the Churchill Bar which, like the Bar Italien welcomes jazz orchestras and other musicians throughout the year. Was it not here that Winston Churchill found inspiration?

Day Two. This morning a car booked by the hotel takes us to the Majorelle Gardens that, even full or tourists, are still perfectly charming. We lunch here, as did Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. A siesta is a must after a delicious mint tea at the Le Menzeh pavilion, hidden in the park at La Mamounia. Tonight we need to be on form. While your other half has a private tennis lesson with Henri Leconte or one of the team trained by him, you head off for a divine beauty treatment at the La Mamounia spa. And here the magic of the spot is ten-fold. This is some 2,500 m² comprising vaulted rooms covered in Zellige mosaics and tadelakt by some of the greatest craftsman of Marrakesh, two ozone swimming pools, and three hammams topped by a fitness pavilion where you can attend yoga and pilates sessions focused on well-being. There are more than 80 treatments available, including some Shiseido ones using beauty products created exclusively for La Mamounia. Do not miss the «Terre du Désert» Pureness Massage, a truly pleasurable purifying treatment thanks to its sugar scrub, Rhassoul mask and a relaxing facial massage with argan balm. As if by magic, your face is resplendent while all signs of tiredness are but a vague memory left behind in the city. A great reason to come back next year! Great Escape
We are in a time that calls for sense. Faced with the anxiety of an uncertain future, the home represents the ultimate refuge. The construction of new imagination, creators of new uses, objects, furniture and lighting satisfy our need for balance and harmony. A symbiosis between baroque and minimalism, design structures space without walls or partitions. Beyond the predictable routine, when poetry visits functionality, magic is worked. By Laure Delvigo

Cassina And Le Corbusier
The Culture Of Wood Crafting
C
assina continues its exploration and research of Le Corbusier’s vast collection of work with a study of creations by the great architect and designer during the 1950s. The company presents an exclusive world preview of four new projects for its “Cassina I Maestri” Collection, which join the Le Corbusier Collection originally introduced in 1964. Philological research has been carried out on each piece, as always working in close collaboration with the Le Corbusier Foundation, with an exacting study of original drawings, sketches and prototypes. Wood is the underlying theme, a material which Le Corbusier - after many years of experimenting with tubular metal – began to use once he had reached full artistic maturity, rediscovering nature and turning his work towards elementary and archetypical items. Cassina takes this opportunity to demonstrate its well-established heritage and experience in carpentry and woodwork, at the heart of the company since its foundation, and to offer an exciting and authentic interpretation of this period in the great master’s design career. These new pieces
140
unite a lucid design approach with a harmonious structure of shapes and surfaces. Tailor-made furniture for the contemporary world The revisited furniture from the archives of Le Corbusier adorns the interiors of some of the designer’s most renowned architectural works; the Maison du Brésil in Paris, l’Unité de Habitation in Nantes-Rezé, l’Unité de Camping and the Cabanon in Roquebrune. Notably, Cassina presented a flawless reconstruction of the Cabanon interiors at the Triennale di Milano in 2006 - an exhibition which was later displayed in Tokyo, Zurich and London. In this series of interior spaces, there is an encounter between Le Corbusier the designer and architect and Le Corbusier the artist, painter and sculptor. As opposed to the extreme rationalism and irreverence of his early work, every piece of furniture here expresses a new and more fluid - even lyrical - sensitivity towards design; a mix of simplicity, severity and emotion.
The Tabouret coffee table /bedside table /stool is inspired by a wooden whisky crate abandoned on the beach and also the boxes used by painters and glass crafters. This is typical of Le Corbusier’s poetic expression in using objet trouvé, which became a dearly retained concept for the designer as years went by. The plasticity of the Escargot and Brésil lamps by Nemo, Cassina’s Lighting Division, gives another example of this creative period and completes the collection. Le Corbusier’s works during the 1950s, show furniture design as focused more than ever before on fulfilling the needs and desires of the people. Accordingly, Cassina brings these models back to life in total harmony with today’s demands, updating their utility through the use of the most advanced technological solutions. The company’s quest for authenticity comes always via a respectful and highly informed interpretation of each original design so that the final product captures the very soul of the designer’s project and retains the values that make it unique and universal. This philosophy pervades the entire “Cassina I Maestri” Collection.

Plexart Perfectly clear!
Soaring, fanciful or imperial, the staircase remains a central piece in a house, just like a fireplace. Made from Plexiglas, dressed in lights, wood, chrome or steel, Plexart creates staircases that are a perfect match for the client. Where innovation meets creation, a meeting with one of the founders of Plexart - Sébastien Pécault. Focus. By Sarah Berchu.
Tell us briefly how you came into the world of design. What was your career path? Training as a metalworker, I soon came across the aesthetic aspect of objects thanks to artistic ironwork. After that it was people I met through my work who guided me naturally towards design. Plexart like Plexiglas, what do you think of this fashion of using Plexiglas in interior design? Starck’s furniture comes immediately to mind. Plexiglas is a very pure material in appearance; virgin of any colour it has a calming effect and evokes a purity comparable to water. And regarding Philippe Starck, it’s true that Plexiglas could totally blend in with his work, thanks to the uniformity of its colour and the shape it can take on when you work it.
V12-44-24H-OAK RACING Série limitée de 24 montres BRM / OAK Racing, numérotées au dos
After the “bling-bling” years we are returning to more sober, more elegant times; a desire for noble materials. Do you feel this trend at Plexart? Absolutely. Plexiglas blends in to spaces and décor where sobriety is the byword. You are an expert in the design of staircases, what place does the staircase have in today’s house? The staircase has a very important place physically! So you have to try to make them go unnoticed, to blend into the background of the room they are in. Plexiglas, through its transparency, achieves this in a remarkable way. But it must also be able to show itself off, just like a masterpiece. That is why every one of our staircases is unique. It is thought out and built – the shape of the steps, the lighting and so on - according to what is going on in the room and what else is in it. 142
Do you think you will use your skill to create furniture or decorative objects? We already have a few pieces of furniture in our catalogue, such as bookshelves, coffee tables and so forth. We design according them to meet individual desires and imagination. The procedure is the same
as for the stairs; each model is unique in its size, shape and primary purpose. What are your plans? To develop our business on an international level. Pour tout renseignement ou toute commande, veuillez contacter BRM par téléphone 01 61 02 00 25 ou par internet

Brigitte Ermel the enchantment of gems She is one of the few women to excel in the elite world of French haute jewellery. Driven solely by her desire for the exceptional, Brigitte Ermel creates timeless pieces, rendering the most remarkable stones even more beautiful. A meeting with a passionate designer. By Nicolas Berger.
Brigitte, what attracted you to the world of jewellery? What motivated you? I have always loved the universe of luxury; the refinement, the beautiful materials, all conjugated in a spirit of femininity. While I was studying gemmology I literally fell in love with stones. That was what really awoke my desire to dress women. In our day, with many of them working, I wanted to give them back the taste of this delicate art that is the parure. Furthermore, I feel very strongly about the idea of perpetuating the tradition of French luxury. We are the heirs to a real know-how! The image of France abroad is that of elegance. What path has your career followed? I managed a boutique for almost eight years. I took care of getting special, made-to-measure orders made up. The experience was very formative but being unable to express my sensitivity, my understanding of jewels, I began drawing. Deep down I am independent by nature and taking risks doesn’t frighten me. So 20 years ago I set up my own business. Then a little later, to give myself even more freedom, I created my own workshop where around 20 people work. There are few women in the world of jewellery. Was it difficult to make your mark? Yes! The trade of goldsmith or silversmith is indeed quite a masculine one and always has been from the start. I am the only woman to have created my own haute jewellery workshop because the technical side of creating a piece of jewellery is a crucial step and I
144
didn’t want to sub-contract that. Doubtless I think of details which wouldn’t occur to men. We should never forget the parure will be worn! What inspires you when you create a piece of jewellery? I would single out two principle influences: the stones themselves and of course my travels. I have drawn huge inspiration from my frequent stays in the Middle East. There women still have the culture of the parure, of a certain sophisticated beauty. This desire to make the best of themselves, to be glorified is, I find, very inspiring. I also like travelling to Japan a lot. Their taste for detail and delicateness feeds my imagination. Finally I think of the women who might wear my creations. In your collections, I noticed a predilection for little-known stones. Which are your favourites? I love them all! What attracts me - other than the criteria of colour and crystallisation - is the life inside a stone. Exceptional stones aren’t a marketing product; each one has its own existence. All my pieces are one-offs because, even if some can be remade, the stones will never be identical. That is real luxury! Some of the pearls also have unusual colours. I’m thinking in particular of one of your parures made of incredible green pearls. These are exceptional pearls from Tahiti. To create the necklace you are talking about took nearly three years during which I looked at nearly 800 pearls
before choosing the ones that suited me! Ring, bracelet, necklace - which element of the female parure inspires you the most? I like all the pieces in a parure. But to wear one shouldn’t mean to cover oneself up! As long as the piece of jewellery is beautiful, the number of pieces doesn’t matter. It’s a question of harmony. The jewellery accompanies an outfit, a mood, a moment ... That is why there are jewels for the day and for the night! For you, should jewellery remain a pleasure buy or can you envisage it as some do as an investment? The two are not incompatible but pleasure should come first. I would make an exception for the diamond which is bought with a certificate. As for other natural stones, we find less and less of them so obviously their price follows. Above all you must love the jewellery. I don’t agree with having a parure or a stone and keeping it in the safe! An exceptional gem, made more so by the work of a French jeweller, is meant to be worn. Finally what advice would you give to someone choosing a piece of jewellery? Choose a piece that is like you, that matches you. A jewel is an echo of ourselves. For more information, please contact 00 33 1 58 62 56 56 . By appointment only

An eruption
of jewels During the last Biennale des Antiquaires, the legendary house of Van Cleef & Arpels took us on an extraordinary journey through the most beautiful gems of the world. Among the many splendours, the Stromboli necklace!

T
he XXVth Biennale des Antiquaires took place in September under the steel and glass of the Grand Palais in Paris. To mark its sixth participation in this internationally-renowned event, Van Cleef & Arpels chose to display a new High Jewellery collection, Les Voyages Extraordinaires, (Extraordinary Journeys) composed entirely of one-off pieces. Alfredo Arias is the artist behind this prestigious interpretation of the works of Jules Verne. It has to be admitted the dreamlike world of the author fits beautifully with that of Van Cleef & Arpels whose artistic heritage is built on the beauty of flora and fauna, of the skies and stars and of imaginary creatures. Then there is a certain historical continuity: Jules Verne died in 1905, just one year before Van Cleef & Arpels opened their boutique at 22, Place Vendôme, in Paris. At the time symbolism was the latest thing in painting and Art Nouveau became the design style of the period. Both inspired the world of jewellery and everywhere one saw nothing but fairies, floral motifs and other chimera. The sets evoke the refined atmosphere of a Gustave Moreau or an Odilon Redon. With its new collection, Van Cleef & Arpels takes its creative narrative back to its beginnings: with the jewels telling their own story. For the sublime

Stromboli necklace, Nicolas Bos, Vice-President and Creative Director of the company, took inspiration from the famous Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Like the book’s heroes, we penetrate the depths via the crater of an extinct volcano. This necklace thus seems like the expression of terrestrial force, of that which bursts through from deep within the Earth itself, there where the most perfect gemstones lie. The Stromboli necklace, which is named after a volcanic island in the Mediterranean, expresses the power and majesty of a volcano in its molten state. At Van Cleef & Arpels the craftsman have pulled off an incredible tour de force in creating an exceptional ensemble of 90 purple sapphires and a cascade of 174 sparkling yellow diamonds: in total, more than 120 carats of gemstones... and dreams! As Stanislas de Quercize, President of Van Cleef & Arpels emphasised: “Stromboli is true to our motto: jewellery for eternity but caught in the moment, in their journey. Jules Verne will be read eternally; we are searching for the design that has the virtue of eternity through its timeless look.”

Murakami at Versailles the Rising Sun King
Japanese artist Takashi Murakami has been ruffling feathers in Versailles with an exhibition of his paintings and sculptures in the Royal Apartments, the Hall of Mirrors and the gardens of the chateau. What better occasion to take a fresh look at this modern art provocateur? By Nicolas Berger.

A
fter Jeff Koons in 2008 and Xavier Veilhan last year, the palace of the Sun King has now opened its doors to 22 creations by the flamboyant Murakami. Born in Tokyo in 1963, his protean work combines the most modern techniques with the precision and virtuosity of traditional Japanese art, in particular that of the ukiyo-e (floating world) woodcuts. Inspired by manga and kawaii, his world is irresistibly populated with monstrous and charming people, mischievous descendants of ancient myths. In 2001 Murakami created the Kaikai Kiki Co. Ltd. based in Tokyo, New York and now Los Angeles, a real breeding ground of artists dedicated to staging exhibitions, producing animated films, publishing catalogues and creating by-products. This has been so successful that Murakami now belongs to that very select group of internationally marketable star artists as much as Koons or Damien Hirst. And yet Murakami is just as happy to talk politics, history or sociology. In 2000 he was the curator of an exhibition of Japanese art ironically entitled “Superflat, in which he displayed the images and characteristic stereotypes of the age of mass leisure. Not that this stops him working regularly in this field himself, or from collaborating with the designer Marc Jacobs to produce drawing for Louis Vuitton products!

In the name of the Rose For his meeting with the temple of Classicism, Murakami built his exhibition around a central motif entitled The Rose of Versailles. This famous comic strip series came out in Japan in the 1970s. A tragic saga set during the French Revolution combining love and class conflict, it was a huge hit with 20th century Japanese girls for whom the hierarchical structure and rules of the population had disappeared and who now lived in a new society where everyone now had the same social status. Through the tragedy of The Rose, Japanese girls dreamt of a fictional France, of a far off time, while forgetting the society they belonged to. By exhibiting his work in the prestigious chateau of the Kings of France, the legendary setting of the series, Murakami sought to retranscribe his own vision of Versailles. With its coloured flowers and baroque sculptures, 11 of which were created especially for this event, the Japanese artist attempts to offer the public a fantastical Grand Siècle, adapted by the classics of modern day Japanese culture. Thus he has filled the palace in the most fantasist way possible, with the type of images that those who read The Rose of Versailles might have created. One almost expects to come across a psychedelic Marie-Antoinette!
150
The Pope of neo-pop? Murakami, with his flashy and popular look, can also be taken for a pop or neo-pop artist. Especially if one views his work through the perspective of the pop-up. Nevertheless, he rejects the pop art label. Pop culture was indeed born in the prosperity of the «winning” countries – the United States and the United Kingdom - at the end of the second World War: the consumer society materialised in the land of these victors. The Japanese, the “losers”, experienced a long period of difficulty and poverty. This crisis, as philosophical as it was material, Murakami has named «Superflat». The joyous colours in his works may evoke pop art, but the background to their birth is completely different. And the artistic phenomenon that one now witnesses in Japan is not of the same nature as western pop art. In fact Murakami performs a two-way translation: on the one hand showing his compatriots what «art» means on a global scale and, on the other, showing foreigners the essence of modern Japanese culture. Versailles, once a universe of experiments and a laboratory for the most audacious creations, especially during lavish court entertainments, merits this contemporary look. And Murakami concludes mischievously: “I am the Cheshire cat that welcomes Alice in Wonderland with its diabolic smile, and chatters away as she wanders around the Château. With a broad smile I invite you all to discover the wonderland of Versailles.”

Anish Kapoor
Sureand
By David Anfam Essay by Johanna Burton. Interview carried out by Donna De Salvo Phaidon, 75 euros
rs - de
The sculptures of Anish Kapoor – Cloud Gate, Sky Mirror, Taratantara – are as mysterious as they are beautiful. Approaching the gigantic, they form a varied yet united ensemble. Although they are made from a wide range of traditional and non-traditional materials, their real subject is often intangible: an abyss, an invisible reflection, a column of air. Using various techniques, they showcase the body and the material. Kapoor was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1954. He lives and works in London and belongs to the generation of British sculptors including Tony Cragg, Richard
Deacon and Antony Gormley that rejuvenated sculpture by injecting it with a new vitality – even a playful dimension. A major figure in contemporary sculpture, Kapoor enjoyed international recognition at the beginning of the 1980s and won the Turner Prize in 1991. For several years the artist has presented monumental installations such as Marsyas for the Turbine Hall at London’s Tate Modern (2002) and more recently Svayambh for the Nantes Museum of Fine Arts in France (2007). This book is the first such complete and detailed monograph dedicated to Kapoor.

ne of the best ways to spend a long winter night is in the company of a good book. Our selection for you this season contains a cocktail of sure-fire winners and avant-garde to which we could apply that famous quote by Oscar Wilde: “I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the very best!”
By Nicolas Berger.
By Georges Sebbag Cercle d’Art, 40 euros
During his very last days, André Breton amused himself by drawing and by linking different objects with a single line, so giving them a new life. It is to a similar imaginative and synthetic approach by two art lovers that we owe this original collection of 200 works created by 90 Dada and Dada-related surrealist artists. Georges Sebbag has titled this collection, abundant with unusual and marvellous perspectives, with memorable and lasting visions Memorabilia, in reference to the
enlightened Swedenborg and the poet Gérard de Nerval. Here the Dadas and the surrealists work well together, the second generation alongside the first; the most famous artists mixing with much lesser-known creators. By getting close to each work and linking them to others, the author of Memorabilia, draws figures and constellations hitherto unnoticed in the skies of Dada and surrealism to the delight of the reader. Fantasies and phantasmagoria abound!

Philippe Starck describes him as a «mystic in a country which is no longer mystic.» Philip Drew calls his buildings «land art» that «struggle to emerge from the earth». He is the only architect to have won the discipline’s four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. His name is Tadao Ando, and he is one of the greatest living architects. Combining influences from Japanese tradition with the best of Modernism, Ando has developed a completely
Within this metropolis criss-crossed with streets where the price of property is as high as the sky-scrapers, gardens have long had a very special place. While the city originally – and indeed during the urban development that marked the 19th century – included impressive public spaces, today’s gardens owe their extraordinary originality to the battle that now pits the logic of profit against the love of nature. A lack of natural resources at ground level has forced gardens to reach higher, up to the light. Lina Baretti, parures
Café Society Socialites, Patrons and Artists, 1920-1960
By Patrick Mauriès Gallimard, 35 euros
She was an exceptional creator of jewellery who worked for Balenciaga, Schiaparelli, the Windsors and Leonor Fini among others. Lina Baretti who died in 1994 had a select range of clients – a fact which goes some way to explaining why she has been largely wiped from the memory of fashion. Stunningly inventive and formally beautiful, her jewels are notable for the
resolutely “poor” materials used in them - cork, mica, velour sabré, cannetille, pearls – and for their spirit similar to that of Fulco di Verdura or Jean Schlumberger. The first monograph on the subject, this book is a real revelation. It offers a vision of the ensemble of Baretti’s work, as well as on the post-war artistic and socialite world and paintings. A journey as precious as it is breathtaking.

Aristocrats, millionaires, painters, fashion designers, choreographers, and musicians of the small world of the Café Society fox-trot aboard cruise liners and mingle at dazzling parties given in the select surroundings of Parisian residences or fairytale Venetian palaces. Frivolous socialites, extravagant and often exclusive, this cosmopolitan society was the generous patron of the greatest creators of the 20th century. Villas and yachts decorated by daring designers, sessions with young fashion and jewellery designers, and elite evening parties, im
mortalized by fashion photographers like Cecil Beaton: the members of the Café Society gave birth to a sophisticated, original, sometimes even avant-garde way of life, combining a great sense of fantasy with a pedigreed elegance. Anticonformist and filled with baroque personalities. This society helped the greatest talents of the last century shine; talents like the poet Edith Sitwell, Russian ballet dancers, the fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli and the musician Cole Porter. Like a modern dance card this beautiful work allows us to really dream.

Full speed ahead with Marvin! After picking up a record seventh rally world champion title this year, Sébastien Loeb has been working with Marvin Watch C° 1850 to create a new timepiece in his image: elegant, sporty and terribly masculine! An anthem to the world of the automobile, two chronographs - one automatic in a limited edition of 777 examples and the other motorised with a quartz movement – sign a dignified and pedigree model. With its high quality finish and its «made in Switzerland» know-how the “LOEB Special Edition” cannot fail to seduce those passionate about great mechanics. Tape rolling. By Sarah Berchu.
Why did you decide to team up with Marvin? I was lucky enough to be able to work with Marvin thanks to an intermediary, Mr Jean François Ruchonnet, with whom we share a common passion: mechanics. He suggested I create my own watch and the idea appealed to me instantly! What effect does it have on you to wear a watch that carries your name? Wearing an eponymous watch – not much of an effect. But wearing a watch that I like, that I designed, I’m delighted and honoured! To create your own timepiece from the conception to the production with so much freedom is great. That it carries my name is flattering but I don’t have an over-sized ego! You know when your image is reproduced in video games; you can’t believe your eyes at first. Then you get used to it but I’m still just as enthusiastic! As far as this new collaboration is concerned, designing a limited edition watch created and distributed by Marvin, is something I like. Where does your passion for watch-making come from? Undoubtedly the common points between car mechanics and watch-making, because there are also
156
mechanisms there. What’s more, high watch-making is finer, more meticulous, more sophisticated. I don’t collect watches but I know a little about them and beautiful watches have always grabbed my attention. I pay even more attention to watches now, since I created my own with Marvin.
common with rallying! At Marvin there weren’t 50 of us all arguing over the colour of the watch face for example! Only Cécile Maye, the director of Marvin, the designer and I decided which options to go for or not. This contrast with other brands, this rapport, won me over at Marvin’s, on top of their know-how.
A rally child prodigy, seven times world champion at just 36 years old, what is your worst rally memory?! When I lost the title by one point in 2003! It was frustrating because I wasn’t able to fight 100% for victory, especially for Citroën. And your best memory? My first title in 2004, then the 2010 one. That’s a very good memory because I more or less won the championship on home soil. I am originally from Strasbourg and I won the championship in front of thousands of supporters, it was very moving and made a big impression on me. So far that’s certainly my best experience.
Where are your favourite spots in Switzerland, your favourite restaurants or hotels? The hotel is home! In Geneva my favourite addresses are the Réserve, as well as a delicious Argentinian restaurant really near me, near Rolles. As for nights out, I love Lausanne with its young, maybe more relaxed ambience than Geneva.
What attracted you to Marvin?
Your plans? Pursue my passion for rallying. My aim would be to win an eighth title before preparing for life after rallying although that’s not for straight away!
The convivial, almost family structure and their passion for the craft – something else they have in
lOEB NOT INCluDED
When you are travelling which is your favourite hotel? I appreciate cosy hotels, not necessarily luxurious, simple but comfortable is better! Your last splurge? A helicopter.

Your Horoscope By Mister Mystery
Aries (March 21 – April 20)
Taurus (April 21 – May 21)
Gemini (May 22 – June 21)
Cancer (June 22 – July 22)
Through your kindness and flexibility you will obtain almost all you desire in the coming months! Negotiations, arbitration and conciliation which are not normally your strong suits, should soon turn out in your favour and to your greatest satisfaction, especially if you were born in March. In short, you should enjoy great success, including in matters of the heart.
Matters of power, rivalry and jealousy are the order of the day, particularly around October 30. Watch out for betrayal and low blows. It is not out of the question that someone might try to put a spanner in the works. In love, the person you hold dearest will fortunately be looking out for you, especially for those of you born in the second decan.
From November a certain hypersensitivity will push you to overreact, especially those of you born after June 6. Your relations with others will sometimes be explosive but matters shouldn’t get too far out of hand because your outbursts will be temporary and your temper will flare down as quickly as it flared up. As for your artistic creativity, it will increase tenfold.
This autumn Saturn will invite you to take a small step back and think about your life and your real and deepest aspirations. It will also be time to put a stop to certain harmful relationships, especially as the stars have an unexpected meeting lined up for you towards the end of November. On the work front, you will find the idea of a reorganisation compelling and you can count on the support of your superiors in this.
Leo (July 23 – August 23)
Virgo (August 24 – September 23)
Libra (September 24 – October 22)
The atmosphere in the coming months will be thrilling and inspiring. Many of you will find yourself enthralled with a person, a cause or even a current affair. You will think of nothing else and will live your emotions intensely. The influx of Venus on your sign indicates a winter in which your affections will be in osmosis, a winter of tenderness by the fireside: make the most of this chance to express your feelings!
This autumn will provide a perfect time for you to take a good look at your friends and your social circle. It is in fact through them that you might be presented with an appealing proposition or simply enjoy some very pleasant moments. What is more, at the beginning of December, unexpected invitations will be more numerous than usual. However, ensure you find time for a few moments of calm and silence.
The Sun will soon enter your sign. And from mid-October you will also benefit from the positive effects of Pluto, synonymous with deep fulfilment and long-lasting psychological strengthening. Whether on a personal or a professional level, you will really be in a very strong position. Furthermore, the forces of Pluto could indicate an evolution or a radical change.
Sagittarius (November23–December21)
Capricorn (December 22 – January 20)
You will display real obstinacy this autumn: nothing and no-one will make you change your mind and some will take you to task over this. This attitude which cuts both ways will sometimes be useful but also risks harming you. It is up to you to decide how to play it! As far as love is concerned, December could well be good news for single Sagittarians due to an unexpected but pleasant encounter.
The Sun moves into your sign at the end of December and it will feel like a real breath of fresh air. You will feel completely at ease with yourself and you will note with pleasure the increased influence you have on your entourage. Until then, autumn should be relatively calm, centred on projects that mean a lot to you. But watch out you don’t become a hermit!

Scorpio (October 23 – November 22) Aquarius (January 21 – February 18) A small family row risks lowering your morale and worrying you more than it should do from the end of October. In fact you will take matters very much to heart and you will have a tendency to allow your emotions to overcome you under the influence of the Moon. Fortunately the energising effects of Mars will stimulate and strengthen you from December onwards and you will rediscover your ability to put things into perspective.
You will expend a huge amount of energy taking care of those you love, especially those of you born in the first decan. You will probably not be aware of it but you will systematically put the well-being of others before your own! It is highly commendable of you to pamper loved ones but this should not become an automatic reaction especially since the rise of Jupiter doubtless holds a promotion for you that will require all your energy.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20) For you the coming months should be ones of construction – professional and emotional. You should start putting plans into action from November. In this you can count on the support of Jupiter whose strong influence will protect you until mid-January. Make the most of this propitious time: go for it!
