Cypress College: California’s #1 College in 2020 and 2018 Cypress College–the beautiful, thriving campus that you can see today–had modest beginnings in 1966, when on September 12 most of the initial student body of 1,200 students stood around the flagpole, with a barely dry concrete footing for the first flag raising, with a Marine color guard and several dignitaries present. The new community college campus was dubbed the “Instant Campus” by Newsweek Magazine because of the mere 74 days that intervened between the digging of the first shovelful of dirt and the beginning of classes. Indeed, the main electrical transformer for the classrooms was turned on just hours before the first-class sessions began. The buildings were all of temporary modular construction. Some of these “temporary” buildings continued in service for over 40 years! The first students to apply at Cypress College were indeed an intrepid, pioneering lot, for when they applied, there was no campus, only a few apartments and houses converted to administrative offices and a place to register students. But register they did, and the college’s first semester started on schedule with students taking classes with a bare-bones curriculum. After the first year, 25 transfers to the college became its first graduates. Cypress College has since grown to the beautiful 112-acre campus that it is today, one of the most attractive campuses in the state and nation. It was ranked the Number 1 community college in California by Niche, a wellrespected organization, in both 2018 and 2020. In the past year, Cypress College was named as a 2023 Aspen Prize Top 150 U.S. Community College and a 2021 Equity Champion of Higher Education. Today, approximately 16,000 students attend Cypress College each semester, taking courses that range from advanced calculus to computer science, nursing, air conditioning and geographic information systems. The college now offers 174 career-training programs, associate’s degrees in 98 areas of study and 56 transfer degrees. As of 2017, Cypress College Mortuary Science students could earn a bachelor’s degree on campus, one of only 15 bachelor’s degree programs in any field offered at a California community college. Cypress College students have gone on to success in four-year institutions, where Cypress College transfers consistently do as well, or better, academically as those who began their education at the four-year school. The College’s Career Technical Education programs are also premier, with several ranked among the best in the nation. The preponderance of respondents to a 2016 survey of 2,438 former students reported improved employment success as a result of their education at the college. They noted a 53.5 percent increase in their hourly wages after completing their coursework, and 90 percent of them voiced satisfaction with their Cypress College experience. Americana Awards: A Brief History Americana’s Origin A letter sent 45 years ago to Cypress College from then-president Gerald Ford encouraging organizations to pay tribute to the upcoming 1976 Bicentennial was the impetus for what has become the college’s signature event as well as an Orange County tradition. Based on this letter, Marion “Stoney” Stoneking, then community services director, along with associates Kaleta Brown, theater instructor, and Don Cantrell, public information officer, conceived of a “Community and Americana Awards night,” the purpose of which would be to recognize people, “the sum and substance of America.” Honorees Stoney met with the mayors of each of the college’s seven (now eight) service cities and asked each to identify someone who had made “contributions of service” to their city. The people the mayors selected became the Citizens of the Year. (Today, each of the eight cities has a designated committee that selects an honoree from nominations received from the entire community.) For the first nine years, seven well-known people in various categories (entertainment, business, sports, the arts, the media, etc.) were given the Americana Award. One of these seven honorees also provided the evening’s entertainment. These honorees included Ray Bolger, Edgar Bergen and Ella Mae Morse. Other known honorees with a more local connection were: Marion Knott, Mickey Mouse, Carl Karcher, Buddy Ebsen, Dr. Sammy Lee, Cypress alumna Geri Jewell, Florence Arnold, and the Sons of the Pioneers. Since 1985 a Man and/or Woman of the Year has been chosen from numerous nominations. Among those honored have been: Tommy Lasorda, Irv Pickler, Frank Garcia, Bill Medley, Bruno Serato, and Trevor Hoffman, Baseball Hall of Fame inductee. The Evening From 1976-1984, the event was held on campus. The first Americana evening started with a dinner prepared by the faculty and students in the Culinary Arts program. The dinner was held in the Band Room although in subsequent years it moved to the Culinary Arts Dining Room, which is now the Art Gallery. Following dinner, the awards ceremony and entertainment were scheduled. Since the theater had not yet been completed, the show that first night, with Ray Bolger performing, was held in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. A year later, the program moved to the theater and was held there every year until it was moved off campus. The event was well received by the community, and the theater was generally full. The awards were given out by Stoney and the college president. At one point, the mayors asked if they could give out the awards, but Stoney said no because he didn’t want the event to become political. The expenses for the program were paid by the community service tax that colleges were allowed to collect at the time. However, when Prop. 13 was passed, that money was no longer available, which is why Jack Scott, then president, saw the opportunity to raise funds, and the current format was established. The event was moved off campus and has been at the Disneyland Resort since 1986. In 2005, as the 30th anniversary of the Americana Awards was being celebrated, an Emeritus program was implemented, as over 200 past honorees were recognized and presented with bronze medallions attached to red, white and blue ribbons. Since then, each year’s honorees receive their own medallions. The on-campus event drew more than 600 attendees to the campus theater. The 200 who attended the dinner prior to the awards and entertainment paid $10 for a dinner of beef stroganoff served over noodles. Of course, today’s event brings 600 together for slightly more than $10 for a four-course dinner in a spectacular setting, the proceeds of which support the work of the Cypress College Foundation. Each year the Foundation provides student scholarships, student emergency assistance, student book loans, and faculty grants among other programs. The Closing Stoney had seen a video of Frank Sinatra singing “The House I Live In (That’s America to Me)”, and he thought the ideas expressed in the lyrics fit the theme of Americana perfectly, so each year he ended the program by reading the lyrics of that song. He particularly emphasized the last two lines—“But especially the people/That’s America to me”—because in his mind, that’s what Americana was all about: the importance of people doing their best, serving their communities, and sharing their talents with others. For 56 years, since that first Americana in 1976, Cypress College has continued to recognize outstanding community volunteers. We sincerely thank you for helping us celebrate these citizens and for assisting us in raising millions of dollars in support of the College.

Over the past two years, our Cypress students have endured job loss, medical issues, and the difficulties of caring for their children and other loved ones – all due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This unique and special event allows the College to acknowledge and give back to the communities we serve and, in turn, raise money for scholarships for our most deserving students. Cypress College is your community college, and the impact we make together cannot be understated. Thank you for being with us on this special night.
The scholarships provided through your generosity help our students realize their dreams, allow them to strive for a better future and, for some, may even be a lifeline to help them continue their education. That has never been more true than the past two years. And so, we thank you on behalf of our students, our faculty, and our staff. Your generosity truly makes a difference. Man of the Year
Chief Brian Fennessy
As the Fire Chief of the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), Brian Fennessy leads more than 1,500 firefighters and professional staff in serving nearly 2 million residents across 23 cities and all unincorporated areas of Orange County. Having served in this role since 2018, Chief Fennessy brings nearly 45-years of service to the agency with a career that began on a hot shot crew run by the United States Department of Agriculture/United States Forest Service.
Fennessy has also been instrumental in leading a region- and state-wide response to the undeniable shift from what was once a “fire season” to what is now a “fire year.” Indeed, the increase of wildfires has driven Fennessy’s passion for innovative solutions that save lives and property. Under his leadership, the OCFA formed a multi-agency partnership with Southern California Edison to create and launch the Quick Reaction Force (QRF), which deploys the world’s largest firefighting helicopters to combat wildfires. These specially equipped giant Chinook helicopters make up the first wildland fire aerial task force that can continue dropping retardant and water after sundown – a gamechanger in preventing, fighting, and extinguishing wildfire.
Despite those humble and early beginnings, a career in the fire service was not initially on Fennessy’s radar. Indeed, with a penchant to land in “a fair amount of trouble” as a youth, Fennessy struggled in and out of school, but athletics gave him a sense of purpose. Fennessy’s passion for teamwork and leadership flourished on the field and in the locker room, leading to both a high school diploma and some post-graduate options from his father: Go to college, join the military, get a job, or move out.
Fennessy’s leadership transcends what he brings to the OCFA as he sits on a variety of boards and agencies — from Chair of the FIRESCOPE Board of Directors and President of the California Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association, to Co-Chair of the Orange County Operational Area Executive Board and an Executive Board Member of the California Fire Chiefs Association. Fennessy is also a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and the United States Hot Shots Association. Locally, he is a member of the board of directors of the Garden Grove Medical Center, a board advisor for the Red Cross of Orange County, and remains a passionate supporter of the Burn Institute, a non-profit organization in San Diego.
That is how, in June of 1978, an eighteen-year-old Brian Fennessy wandered into a Pasadena unemployment office. He couldn’t have known it at the time, but his life (and, in some ways, the lives of the countless firefighters he would go on to lead) was forever changed when he was encouraged by the office manager to consider an opportunity to join the US Forest Service as a wildland firefighter. Working on a hotshot crew was difficult and dangerous work, but more than that, it was humbling. Most of his fellow crew members were military veterans whose life and work experience vastly exceeded that of a still-teenage Fennessy. Recognizing his own immaturity and lack of experience, Fennessy learned to listen, adapt, and grow, eventually working his way up from running a chainsaw to leading other firefighters as a squad boss, crew captain, and eventually crew superintendent. After 13 years as a wildland firefighter, Fennessy joined the San Diego Fire Department where he again worked his way through the ranks until he was appointed the agency’s Fire Chief in November of 2015. Under his leadership, SDFD strengthened its ability to serve the citizens of the City of San Diego and region, including the development of the agency’s helicopter program. Chief Fennessy might have finished his career in San Diego were it not for a persistent recruiter who continuously sought his application for the Fire Chief job at the OCFA. Intrigued by the opportunity and the challenge, Fennessy ultimately threw his hat in the ring and was appointed OCFA’s Fire Chief in April of 2018.
All the while, Fennessy has not forgotten his humble beginnings (or the lure of the wrong path he was on before sports and the fire service saved him). To that end, he has worked with a program that supports juveniles and adults who have broken the law to reform and pursue careers in the fire service. “The fire service has been an invaluable gift in my life, and God only knows where I would be without it,” Fennessy said. “I am always seeking out ways to pay that gift forward to anyone willing to work for it with character and courage.” Fennessy has two sons — Matthew and Tyler from a previous marriage — and a daughter, Megan, with his wife, Kathy, of over 20 years. Fennessy cites Kathy as the “secret to his success,” and is quick to praise her for all the behind-the-scenes support that empower him to take on the challenges and opportunities that come with being OCFA’s Fire Chief. Fennessy’s passion to be a change agent is evident in every position he has held throughout his career. A social justice champion, his advocacy for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has yielded much-needed change in the fire service, first in San Diego and now in Orange County. SDFD’s percentage of women firefighters eclipsed the national average and the agency’s first female chief was appointed in 2006. Under his leadership, the OCFA created its annual Girls Empowerment Camp, became one of the first fire departments in the country to put a lactation room in all its fire stations, and hired its first Diversity & Inclusion Coordinator in history. 12

Stephen Sain
Stephen H. Sain was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. He attended Buffalo State College, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. After graduation, he attended the Dayton, Ohio, Police Academy, a top ranked training facility and served for two and a half years with the Englewood Police Department in Ohio. When an opportunity with the Garden Grove Police Department presented itself, he moved to California.
training programs for police officers, state of the art equipment and cutting- edge technology, and employee safety and wellness programs not currently supported by the police department’s budget.
After serving three years with GGPD, he began his tenure with the Anaheim Police Department. He was a member of the SWAT team and worked various specialized assignments including narcotics and vice. He served for 27 years, retiring as Deputy Chief.
The Anaheim Family YMCA has also been the beneficiary of Steve’s volunteerism and leadership for more than 20 years. Rotary, too, has benefited from Steve’s community commitment, where he once again provided strong leadership as a past president and in a variety of other positions.
While at Anaheim PD, Steve met his wife, Carol. They have enjoyed 32 years of marriage together and have three adult daughters—Candice, Christin, Cathrine, and son-in-law Anders Howmann.
While working for the police department, Steve took advantage of financial assistance offered by the city of Anaheim and earned a Master of Arts Degree in Organizational Leadership from Chapman University. This degree was the key to opening the doors of the non-profit/community sector in which he excels. But Steve’s interest in volunteer activities started with his parents, who gave generously of their time, helping to improve their community for 50 years. Another influential mentor was Dave Hill, who served as the city of Anaheim’s Human Resources Director for over 40 years. Dave recruited Steve to join the board of directors of Leadership Anaheim, where he could use his professional experience to benefit others as well as to expand his impact on the overall community. Leadership Anaheim inspired Youth Leadership Anaheim, a leadership development program operated by and for high school students. In 2006 this highly successful program was renamed “Youth Leadership America” and became its own non-profit. For over 10 years Steve served as a mentor and member of the board.
In the broader community Steve has been a board member of the Anaheim Community Foundation since 2008, serving in various roles including as president for two years. Currently he chairs the Grants Committee and ensures that “ACF Helping Hands” funds are distributed directly to Anaheim community non-profits that offer a wide range of needed services.
A more non-traditional volunteer role caught Steve’s attention in 2008, when he began volunteering as a courier for the National Marrow Donor Program. He has completed short trips within California and Arizona as well as longer trips to the East Coast to deliver life-giving bone marrow to a waiting patient. His local parish has also enjoyed Steve’s strong support, where he has held leadership positions for 20 years. Clearly, when Steve commits to something, he is “all in,” focusing on supporting organizations that make a positive impact on youth and the Anaheim community through mentorship, volunteerism and other kinds of support. He still finds time for trips with his family, Hawaii being a favorite destination, where Steve can indulge his passion for skin diving or scuba diving, which he first learned in the Niagara River, above the famous falls.
In 2006, Anaheim Chief of Police, John Welter, asked Steve to help establish and coordinate a community advisory board for the police department to keep the lines of communication strong between the PD and citizens of Anaheim. Steve continues to sit on its board. In a similar vein he served on the boards of the Orange County Family Justice Center Foundation since it opened in 2006 and Anaheim Cops-4-Kids. Steve’s ties to the Police Department continue to be strong, as he is currently serving as treasurer of Chief Cisneros’ newly established non-profit, the Anaheim Police Department Foundation. The foundation will enhance crucial funding by investing in advanced professional development and

City of Buena Park Alice lives by the philosophy that “you make where you are better.” The answer is not to leave when you encounter a problem; instead, you do what needs to be done to fix it. Having learned at an early age how to be self-sufficient, she definitely has the capacity to get things done. Her philosophy and strong skills have led Alice to serve her community in a variety of ways for over 20 years.

But her story starts with her birth on an Army base in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the oldest of three children. Later the family moved to the South Bay, where Alice attended Carson High School, Harbor College, and CalState, Dominguez Hills. Eventually she earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix, but that was later in life while working full-time and raising her young son, Jakob, with her husband, Jeff.
Alice’s service to Buena Park is two-fold, in that she has been a long-time city employee and a very involved volunteer. She began working for the city of Buena Park as a senior typist clerk in the Public Works Department and was later promoted to the position of department head secretary and then management assistant in the City Manager’s Office. However, Alice was eager to advance further in her career, so she took advantage of any on-the-job training that was available, volunteer opportunities, as well as the informal knowledge gained from mentors, in order to learn as much as she could.
successful in establishing this very important non-profit. She was its founding president and continues to volunteer her time to this organization. In addition to her commitment to improving the schools in her area, Alice has found time to participate in other volunteer work. For example, she and her family have volunteered with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event. Alice held various leadership positions in the Buena Park/La Palma (now Northwest Orange County) Chapter of the Relay for Life team and was successful in raising significant funds. Former Mayor Don McCay encouraged Alice’s involvement in this fundraising activity although she initially said she didn’t think she had the time! She often would participate in many other city and non-profit club activities which further increased her knowledge of and impact on her community. City leaders such as Mayor Art Brown and his wife, Chris, often participate in these same community events, and they have come to see how much Alice cares for her community. Many of Alice’s contributions are driven by the idea that it’s easier to say yes than no. She also believes in never turning away a volunteer. One of Alice’s special skills is finding the best place for volunteers who are passionate about a cause. Alice’s approach to volunteerism is simply this: “I did what I was supposed to do and I hope I did it well.” Her advice to others who want to make their communities better is also simple and direct: “If you want your community to be better, be a part of making it better.”
Eventually she enrolled in National University and earned a master’s in public administration with an emphasis in organizational leadership. She is now the human resources manager for Buena Park, a position that she enjoys very much because it gives her the opportunity to serve in a leadership role and as an advisor on city decisions. Her volunteer work began when her son was in school She served as secretary, treasurer, and president of the Pendleton School PTA and in those same positions for the high school basketball and baseball booster clubs. Alice’s experience in these school-related activities and the encouragement of Buena Park School District Board member Barbara Michel convinced Alice to lead the effort to create the Buena Park School District Education Foundation--a non-profit group formed to promote and improve education by supporting teachers and developing programs for students to advance academically, to gain vocational experience, and to participate in extracurricular activities. City of Cypress When you meet Loree Erpelding, you might wonder if some people are given more than 24 hours in a day. After you get to know her, you begin to wonder if there could ever be a task too impossible for her to accomplish. Loree epitomizes optimism and generosity. She has an uncanny ability to extract the positive from the most challenging situations. Loree confronts every new obstacle with a “how can we solve this?” attitude. She looks for the good in people and accepts people for who they are, where they are. “Persistence knows no failure,” and Loree Erpelding has a lifelong track record of never giving up.

Loree says her optimistic outlook on life came from being raised on a 36-acre cattle ranch outside Salem, Oregon, by loving parents who by example showed her how much can be accomplished with a cheerful attitude, a determined spirit, and a healthy dose of encouragement.
Loree spent many years in the foodservice business, serving eight years as the food service director in the Oregon State Capitol Building, managing fine dining establishments, and becoming the owner of a restaurant in a small rural community in Oregon. Her career path led Loree into national sales roles and ownership in a foodservice manufacturing company, which created the opportunity to travel extensively and build sales networks across the country. Relocating to California provided the opportunity for Loree to become involved in community volunteerism. In 2015, she was Cypress Police Department’s Volunteer of the Year and in 2017, she was named Cypress Woman of the Year by the West Orange County Woman’s Conference. In 2010, Loree founded OCEVA (Organized Communities Emergency Volunteers Association), a non-profit providing disaster preparedness training and resources to underserved communities. Through these efforts, Loree has been instrumental in coordinating over 90 “Neighbor 4 Neighbor” events in Cypress, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, and Rossmoor. These neighborhood block events bring together residents and first responders to encourage neighborhood planning for the unexpected, promote personal safety, and encourage disaster preparation training. Rounding out her volunteer activities, Loree is also President of Tanglewood Homeowners Association, a 443-unit development in Cypress.

In addition to her volunteer work, Loree is co-owner of a California-based food brokerage company and Vice President of Sales for a leading manufacturer of Asian-inspired food products. Both firms focus on feeding children across the United States through the National School Lunch Program. Managing 30 employees and a national broker network, Loree’s leadership style is to build a team of talented professionals, provide the needed tools to succeed, and then step out of the way, allowing each team member to achieve success and receive the accolades. Despite her busy schedule, Loree has traveled extensively across the country and around the world and maintains close connections with the friends she has met along the way. Loree shared that she does not take many organized vacations; however, in 2015, she decided it was time and she traveled to Germany to visit relatives. Together, they ventured into France and visited Paris to celebrate Loree’s birthday. The night of her birthday, terrorists simultaneously attacked several locations throughout Paris making headlines across the world. Loree was not far from the attacks and the experience reinforced her conviction to always be prepared for the unexpected and to reconsider taking vacations. Loree values her faith, friends, and family and enjoys using her skillset to serve others wherever the need presents itself. Her deepest sense of accomplishment is witnessing the achievement of others when the elements of information, creativity, and resources are combined. Loree doesn’t believe in coincidence and knows from experience that great loss can open the door to incredible success. She does not spend time focusing on what others say can’t be done but concentrates instead on the possibilities. To this end, Loree feels blessed with her current opportunity to host two formerly economically and shelter-compromised young college students. She feels fortunate to be a part of these siblings’ lives and enjoys watching their daily example to never let obstacles prevent them from achieving their dreams.
Loree currently volunteers as the Emergency Services Coordinator for the Cypress Police Department. Her responsibilities include coordinating logistics with six West Orange County cities for CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and maintaining a state of readiness within the City. In 2019, Loree provided logistical team support for the Police Unity Tour, a 300-

City of Garden Grove Ginny insists that she is not extraordinary--she says she simply “does things.” A resident of Garden Grove for 55 years, Ginny is proud to call the city her home, the place where she raised her children and where she developed her love of volunteerism. Ginny, an only child, grew up in a small mining town near Pittsburgh, PA. After graduating from high school, she attended business college. Her first job was as a secretary for the Air Force at the Pentagon, where she met her late husband, Pete. Ginny and Pete have three children-daughters Debra and Cindy and son Michael, who has passed. Ginny also has two granddaughters--Kaitlyn and Amanda. Virginia “Ginny” Moore
Ginny also worked for a time as a John Robert Powers model, a fact that does not surprise anyone who has met her because she still projects a lovely presence and has a radiant smile.
In the early 1980’s, Ginny joined the Women’s Civic Club of Garden Grove and was active in the Mannequins Section. This group hosted many fashion shows as a means to raise funds for different organizations in town. It was through these events that she met fellow Garden Grove Americana Citizen of the Year Honoree Kay Barr, who owned the dress shop where the club held its fashion shows and who served as chief commentator for all of the shows. Ginny has also volunteered with the Arthritis Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House, the Assistance League, the Boys and Girls Club and the PTA. At 86 years young, Ginny is full of energy and keeps active beyond her volunteer service. In her free time, she enjoys playing bingo at nearby casinos and participating in various social activities. She also loves any time she can spend with her grandchildren. When Ginny was named the 2022 Americana Citizen of the Year for Garden Grove, she took some time to look through the most recent Americana program and began realizing that she knew nearly every previous Garden Grove honoree recognized over the last 47 years. She feels very proud to be in that company of distinguished citizens. Certainly, it is a distinguished group, and Ginny fits right in.
As to her statement that she simply “does things,” that may be true, but those “things” constitute a long and impressive list. For example, Ginny has been an active member of the LampLighter Guild of CHOC (Children’s Hospital of Orange County) for 39 years. She has held numerous officer positions on the Executive Board, serving as president and head of many fundraising committees. She has participated in the CHOC Disneyland Walk 20 times, several fashion shows, auctions, Quartermanias (a raffle and auction event), wine tasting events and a community-wide yard sale that netted thousands of dollars. Ginny remains devoted to the Guild. During the Bicentennial celebration, Ginny was appointed by the city of Garden Grove to the Bicentennial Commission. The group promoted many patriotic events, the most celebrated of which was the sculpture called “The Eagle Has Landed,” which it commissioned. The sculpture now stands in the civic center to celebrate the United States’ accomplishments in space exploration. When Pete joined the Lions Club 45 years ago, women were not accepted as members, so as not to be left behind, Ginny, along with several other wives of members, co-founded an auxiliary to the Lions Club called the Lion Tamers. They worked on all club activities and fundraisers. It was fitting then that when Pete passed in 2015, Ginny became a member of the Lions Club--now that women were allowed to join. She served on the Executive Board for four years, holding office as 1st vice president, 2nd vice president and in 2020, as president.

City of La Palma Mic and Dee like to think of themselves as co-captains in life. They met at work and quickly decided that they were meant to be together. Many years later they are still inseparable and best friends. They make a point of starting every day together, with Dee getting up with Mic at 5 AM to fix breakfast and connect before they both go to work. For 37 years they have been community volunteers in La Palma. For Mic, having lived in 17 different homes by the time he graduated from high school, it was very important to put down roots somewhere and stay. This conviction is Mic & Dee Vincenti part of what has motivated him to be so active in his community. He really wanted to keep his family in one place and is glad their son, Mike, now 27, could have that kind of stability growing up. Their impact on La Palma has been significant and wide-ranging. Dee was president of the PTA at Walker Junior High and volunteered on Registration Day. She also served as secretary at the La Palma Community Foundation when it was first established.
Mic and Dee got to know many local youth who were struggling. They took a personal interest in these young people, doing what they could to enhance their lives, including taking one of the kids to a restaurant for the first time in his life. Mic and Dee donate time and money to charitable auctions each year with artistic wood crafting, Dee being particularly fond of peace signs, which she uses as inspiration for her artwork. Some of their signs can be seen at the entrance to the La Palma Police Department. Both Mic and Dee are very proud of their son, who has been joining his parents in their volunteerism since before he can remember. He was even featured on Channel 7 News as a “Cool Kid” because of his desire to help others. When Mike was participating in the Tiger Woods Learning Program, he took up golf and now volunteers to teach 5-year-old children the game. It would be easy to conclude that all Mic and Dee do is spend time volunteering, but Dee has worked for 37 years at LSC Communications and Mic works at Kennedy High School in La Palma. However, as Mic and Dee look forward to retirement, they are excited about having more time to get involved in philanthropic endeavors, including working with the Red Cross. They also want to inspire younger residents to volunteer in their communities. Certainly, Mic and Dee are the ideal role models to encourage such efforts.
But most of the time Mic and Dee volunteer together. For example, in 2016 they canvassed La Palma as part of their work with the committee that supported Measure JJ, a challenging position in that the measure increased the sales tax but also provided continued funding to the police department. For many years Mic and Dee volunteered during the La Palma Veterans Day parade, coordinating the line-up of the vehicles, and they managed the National Night Out booth. Since 1989, Neighborhood Watch has benefited from their community spirit since together they have served as president, vice president, membership chair, coordinators and block captains, as well as in various positions on the board. Mic and Dee have been recognized for their contributions to La Palma, Dee having been named City Volunteer of the Year in 2008. Their home also won the La Palma Home Spotlight Award in 2019, acknowledging their commitment to taking pride in their home’s appearance and contributing to efforts to keep La Palma beautiful. Helping at-risk youth has been a focal point of their volunteer activities since 1998 when they started helping at HOPE, a local food bank. In addition to coordinating “Cereal” and Christmas basket donations for the HOPE food bank at the La Palma Schools and National Night city event, 22

City of Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Troy has led a life of contrasts, having been born in the large city of Long Beach but then moving to the rural area of Norco when he was nine. His adult life includes living in the small town of Los Alamitos, where he served on the city council, to holding a high-level position with the Department of Homeland Security in Washington, DC. Norco provided Troy with the freedom to have horses and motorcycles. He also was very involved in sports teams, many of which were coached by his dad, a member of the Army Corps of Engineers. He became an avid reader, especially of biographies, which sparked Troy’s imagination about what was possible in the world beyond Norco. After high school, he wasn’t sure what wanted to do, so he joined the Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor. After the Troy Edgar Navy he worked at McDonnell Douglas in manufacturing, then logistics, and on to finance. He became the chief financial officer for logistics at Boeing, where he had the opportunity to interact with various legislators and high-level corporate leaders. At that time he saw the value of having a college degree, so he enrolled at USC and earned a bachelor’s degree and MBA. After finishing his MBA, Troy was recruited to Price Waterhouse Coopers, which gave him the opportunity to work all over the world. Later, he started his own consulting business.
Although Troy has finished his work with DHS, he is still spending much of his time in Washington, DC, consulting on matters for the Department of Defense, the Veterans Administration, NASA, DHS, and the CIA. Troy thanks his wife, Betty, for being his best supporter in all of these ventures. Betty is a naturalized citizen from Iran, speaks five languages, and, Troy says, is the smartest woman he knows. She also happens to be a very proud Cypress College alum! Troy has three boys--Matt, Tyler and Ethan. He is happy to have all three of them living nearby. Matt is a comedian; Ethan is following in his father’s footsteps in consulting, working at Ernst & Young; and Tyler works for one of Troy’s businesses. Troy and Betty are incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to make a positive impact in the city that they love. He is constantly inspired by the generosity of so many members of the community, such as former Los Alamitos Americana honorees Kenny Brandyberry, Ron Bates, and especially Marilynn Poe. Troy is currently writing his memoirs, which, once published, perhaps will inspire others as he was inspired when he read those biographies many years ago.
Around 2006, Troy decided he wanted to devote more time to his community. He credits Judy Klabouch for getting him involved with CASA Youth Shelter and the Chamber of Commerce, which led to his involvement with other local charities, such as Precious Life, St. Isidore and The Youth Center. The more Troy delved into his community, the more inspired he was to serve, and he began considering a run for city council. He developed strong relationships with community leaders, including Marilynn Poe and Alice Jempsa. Marilynn once asked him, “Troy, do you know when the best time to run for City Council is? When there’s an open seat!” Alice had a practice of walking the neighborhoods of Los Alamitos meeting people, and Troy followed her lead. He was elected in 2006, when the city was on the verge of bankruptcy, so his financial expertise proved to be very valuable. In 2016, Troy thought his life in politics was complete. Then he had an opportunity to serve as chief financial officer for the Department of Homeland Security, which meant going through a Senate confirmation process, as well as giving up his hands-on approach to his business, but he knew that serving his country was the right thing to do. 24

City of Seal Beach Deb Machen is a Seal Beach resident, a small business owner, and an avid supporter of the community. She currently sits on the boards of Save Our Beach, Friends of the Library, the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce and is a founding member of the Seal Beach Historical Resources Foundation. She works closely with The Youth Center and Los Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF) and was a LAEF Queen of Hearts Candidate in 2016, raising funds to support the Los Alamitos School District’s STEAM initiative. She is the new host of the SBTV3 public access program, Studio Café.

She is a self-described introvert, but just about anyone who encounters her, with her enthusiasm and bright smile, would beg to differ. Also, she is known around town for her fun fashion sense and loves to make a colorful statement at favorite community events. In fact, the community expects that from her now!
posters, banners and contests, engaging over 9,000 followers on social media channels and encouraging them to eat, shop and play local. In 2012 she was named Small Businesswoman of the Year by the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce, and in 2016, she was named Seal Beach Woman of the Year by the Tri-City Women’s Conference. In 2021, Deb received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from the Seal Beach Lions Club. One of the people that was pivotal in making Deb feel like she had found her home in Seal Beach was former honoree, Seth Eaker. She is grateful for the very special friendship and unbreakable bond that they developed through giving to the community that they both loved so much. In early 2020, Deb began serving on the S.E.T.H. Memorial Scholarship Fund, which focuses on leadership and kindness in the community. In the coming years, Deb looks forward to slowing the pace of her life and doing some more travelling across Europe with Bob, her husband of 28 years. As much as she loves serving her community, time with her loved ones, including daughters Rene and Jenny and grandsons Jordan and Apollo, and letting them know how much they mean to her is always her priority.
Many may not know that one of Deb’s first experiences as a public figure was when she was 15 and worked as a roller-skating clown in B & I Circus Department Store in Tacoma, WA. She roller-skated around the store, spreading fun and handing out balloons and other prizes. To make the experience more interesting, her coworkers included a gorilla and a chimpanzee. Deb was a Seal Beach planning commissioner for several years, including a 2-year term as commission chair. She has served as vice president and president of the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce, chair of the Seal Beach Community Thanksgiving Dinner, co-chair of the Seal Beach Centennial Marketing Committee, governmental affairs chair for the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce, Seal Beach Car Show media chair, and a member of the Seal Beach Performing Arts Association. A member of the Seal Beach Lion’s Club, she served as an announcer for the Christmas Parade and Fish Fry for seven years, chaired the parade judging for six years and chaired the Thanksgiving Dinner distribution (partnering with the Chamber of Commerce and Pavilions) in 2020 and 2021. Deb was on the board of Run Seal Beach for five years, as secretary and marketing director. She also served on the Americana Awards Selection Committee for four years and is the current president of the SB Historic Resources Foundation. In mid-2020, during the strict COVID-19 restrictions, Deb used her many years of marketing experience to create and implement the Hold Fast Seal Beach marketing campaign for the City of Seal Beach, in support of small Seal Beach businesses. The highly successful 6-month campaign employed print advertising, bus stop ads, email campaigns, press releases to all local media, 26

City of Stanton Although he is now a resident of Stanton, Tom was raised in Los Alamitos where his parents still reside today. After graduating from Los Alamitos High School, he went on to the University of California, Irvine to study economics and management. While at UCI, he spent his entire junior year in a study abroad program in London. After graduating, he chose to pursue a career in commercial real estate. Tom comes from a close-knit family, which includes his three sisters. He enjoys a true friendship with his parents, as exemplified by his dad having served as best man at Tom’s wedding to his wife, Veronica, in 2014. In 2019 Tom and Veronica welcomed their son, Mark, to their family. Tom feels his greatest blessings are his wife, his family and being a dad.

Tom is also a member of the Long Beach Business Improvement District, a previous big brother for Big Brothers and Sisters of Orange County, and an active member of his church and men’s group. Tom credits his relationship with Stanton Mayor Dave Shawver as providing inspiration for community service since Dave is a daily example of what it means to serve and put others first. Tom appreciates having been so warmly welcomed by the Stanton community and has truly enjoyed being introduced to the many people and organizations that make Stanton the special place that it is. He looks forward to many more years of contributing to the people, and especially the children, who call this place home.
Tom is the vice president of development for Frontier Real Estate Investments. He works alongside his boss, mentor, and friend of 10 years, Dan Almquist, both of whom take great care to create unique gathering places for the community, such as the recently developed Rodeo 39 Public Market in Stanton, a project which Tom thinks of as having been a labor of love. Tom considers Dan a co-honoree for this award as Dan gives generously, always finds time to serve the community, and inspires Tom and other employees to do the same, including spending time away from work, when necessary, to participate in various organizations. For Tom, one of these organizations is the Boys and Girls Club of Stanton, on whose board he serves. This organization has always provided outstanding service to local children, but Tom was very impressed with its ability to perform heroically in the past two years as it became a full-time school for families in need. He is humbled by the recent honor of being named Board Member of the Year and considers it a great privilege to have been able to assist with fundraising efforts in a matching funds program with the city of Stanton for $250,000 to remodel the existing outdoor play space and basketball court, as well as to complete necessary renovations for the club. Tom strongly believes that the club and the children deserve to have and enjoy these new facilities. Being a parent has made Tom particularly aware of the needs of children in Orange County, so in addition to his commitment to the Boys and Girls Club, Tom launched the inaugural Rodeo 39 Toy Drive in partnership with Santa’s Sirens, Orange County Fire Authority, and CARE ambulance to support Stanton’s youth during the recent holidays. Additionally, Tom and Frontier Real Estate Investments support the Stanton Community Foundation and its annual charity shootout, the annual Stanton Citywide Thanksgiving Dinner, the Orange County Boy Scouts, the St. Polycarp Family Festival, the Illumination Foundation, and the Cypress College Foundation, as 28

Alumnus of the Year Nancy Matsui is Cypress College’s 2021 Alumna of the Year, and the first Asian woman to receive this award. Nancy’s career in aviation and travel began in 1972 after graduating from Cypress College with an associate degree. Her airline industry career included many managerial positions with three major airlines; however, her most cherished role was national account sales manager for American Airlines. Nancy’s sales territory included top national travel agencies and she secured over $45 million in annual revenue for American Airlines. For Nancy, the most fulfilling part of the job was the opportunity to participate in community and national organizations that promote diversity and awareness in Asian communities. Some of this involvement includes board of director or advisory board Nancy Matsui positions at the Japanese American National Museum, Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, Little Tokyo Service Center, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, and U.S.-Japan Council (based in Washington, D.C.). Nancy recently retired from American Airlines just after celebrating her 40th service anniversary.Nancy has paid her successful career forward through her commitment to Cypress College and its Aviation and Travel Careers (ATC) Program. She has taught Travel Sales and Tourism Marketing as an adjunct professor at Cypress College for the past ten years, as well as serves on the ATC Executive Advisory Board. Nancy shared, “Thank goodness I made the decision to get my associate degree at Cypress College hoping to increase my odds of securing my ‘dream job’ to become a flight attendant. It worked! It was clear to me that I was offered a flight attendant position because of Cypress College’s Flight Attendant Program reputation. Word of mouth spread quickly in Southern California, and recruiters from all the major airlines were hiring Cypress College graduates.” Her advice to students, “Keep dreaming…Dream jobs are out there!”

I
n an important step to establish a lasting legacy for Cypress College students, the Foundation established the Legacy Society. Donors who commit to an endowment of $10,000 or more through a will, trust, annuity, insurance policy or outright cash, are inducted into the Legacy Society. The Foundation inducted 36 Charter Member families into the Legacy Society in 2017. Legacy Society donors include members of the community, Cypress College faculty, managers, staff, and retirees as well as Foundation Board members. Of particular interest is that five college presidents, JoAnna Schilling, current president, and four former presidents have all committed their support to Cypress College through the Legacy Society.

Remembering and honoring two Cypress College Icons, Irv Pickler and Tom Lubin In partnership with The Pickler Family, in 2019, the Cypress College Foundation established The Irv Pickler Endowment for Athletics Scholarships. This scholarship will be a lasting celebration of the priceless and countless contributions Irv made to the college.

The endowment will, in perpetuity, provide scholarships to Chemistry students and the Men’s Basketball program. Working with a CalWORKs counselor, Mireya obtained permanent housing with Project Self-Sufficiency and the Family Crisis Center. Mireya also utilizes the campus food pantry. Mireya is a Cypress College Foundation scholarship recipient. She will graduate from Cypress College this spring, transferring to Biola University as a Psychology major. She plans to obtain a PsyD in Clinical Psychology and work with patients utilizing Equine Therapy. “At Cypress College, I learned the difference between a career and a calling. The Cypress College Foundation is proud to once again announce the annual scholarship in tribute to all Americana Honorees. The Americana Awards Outstanding Community Leader Scholarship will be awarded to a Cypress College student who demonstrates extraordinary service to the community. This $1,000 scholarship was awarded for the first time at the May 2021 Cypress College Foundation Scholarship Awards Ceremony.
